CYC Islander deadline:
We welcome members’ photos for the newsletter. Drop off copy and/or photos for the August issue to the CYC Islander mailbox in the Club office by July 10. You may also send copy to msmith@cycrr. org.

Longtime members, from left, Helene Hunger, P/C John Malm, Betty Kemper and Barbara Rudge take a moment out for a photo during Commodores’ Ball.
The island is in full summer mode with tons of activities both on and off the water. In June, Colleen and I had the honor of recognizing the Past Commodores and their spouses for their dedication and service to the club. The incredible facilities, the robust membership we currently enjoy, the diversity of programming throughout the season, and the rich traditions we participate in, have all been made possible by this group. When you have a moment, please make it a point of thanking them. Check out some of the photos on page 3, and of course, our cover photo.
Sail Fleet is in full swing with both the annual Roberts Race and the CYC Charity Cup on the schedule this month, while the Power Fleet has a full slate of cruises on the calendar. Please check the calendar and the Islander for more details.
Our juniors remain incredibly busy, as sail camp, race team and the swim team continue with full schedules. CYC is hosting the Area E qualifying regatta on July 10 for the right to compete in US Sailing’s Triple Handed Championship. Best of luck to our racers. On July 16, the Junior Race Team will head off to Put-inBay for the annual ILYA Junior Championships where I’m sure they will do an outstanding job representing the club. Our swim team and sail camp will each close out their seasons with trophy nights on the 20th and 25th respectively, where we’ll have an opportunity to celebrate and recognize their many achievements.
Of course, the biggest bash of the year kicks off on July 11 as we open Regatta for six fun-filled days, where we will
honor yachting traditions and make new memories along the way. Sarah and Chris van Raalten and their team have planned an itinerary that will recreate some of the greatest yacht racing destinations in the world. Please plan to enjoy great music, great food and lots of fun for the whole family. We will close out regatta with the traditional Squadron Sail on Sunday the 16th. Keep an eye out in your mail and on the website for the official Regatta program with all the details, and see page 5 for the itinerary.
I hope everyone read the short article in the June Islander introducing the proposed clubhouse renovation. We plan to have a town hall meeting later this summer where we will provide full details of the plan including proposed timing and options to pay for the project. We will be sure to communicate the date of the town hall as soon as we have finalized it.
I’d like to thank everyone for their ongoing patience with the modified traffic patterns. We continue to make progress on our plan to replace the bridge and will provide more concrete details as soon as they become available. Stay tuned.
I hope everyone continues to enjoy a fantastic summer at the club, and as always, Colleen and I look forward to seeing each of you on the island again very soon.

Fine Art Fleet
Summer is finally in full swing as it clearly appears from the wonderful number of fun and exciting activities all over the island, and throughout the next several months CYC members of all ages will be busy enjoying all that is available at our club.
Our friend Sarah van Raalten will be displaying one of her beautiful Irish landscape oil paintings in the library, titled “Ballyluck 5,” depicting an enchanting bay and cottages where her family resides during their overseas trips. The simple and relaxing countryside Irish atmosphere is perfectly captured in her work, so reflective of the idyllic reality found in that corner of the world!
“Ballyluck 5 (2023) is a departure from my other work, which is more traditional realism,” she says. “Ballyluck is my parents’ farm in County Cork, on the south coast of Ireland. The winds of the ocean push the clouds into constantly changing patterns of light and shadow and the stucco on the old buildings glows in the evening light. I am inspired to paint there, to try to capture the juxtaposition of the wild expanse of the landscape with the warm welcome of home.”
An avid art student growing up, Sarah Ripich van Raalten started taking Saturday classes at the Beck Center and Cleveland Museum of Art and envisioned her future as an artist. But life led her to other more practical pursuits for several decades before she picked up her brushes again.
When her children (Caroline, now 15 and Harry, 13) were small, Sarah found herself making Play-Doh sculptures after the kids were in bed. She would draw elaborate scenes on the napkins for their lunch boxes and create fantastical birthday cakes. Finally she decided to paint a portrait of their dog, Daisy, as a surprise gift for Chris. She bought supplies and watched
An Evening with Gary Jobson will be October 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Clubhouse. Gary is a world-renowned sailor, television commentator and author of more than 18 books on sailing. He was a tactician for Ted Turner on Courageous during the 1977 America’s Cup and also during the 1980 defender trials. In 1983, he was the founder and tactician of the Courageous/Defender syndicate. Register for this event at cycrr.org.

Tennis Fleet serves up chills, thrills, drills
It gives me great pleasure to introduce Ethan Myers as our new Assistant Dining Room Manager. Ethan has worked as a server the past 12 years at CYC providing exceptional member service, great attitude and an outgoing personality. His wealth of knowledge in food and beverage and his understanding of restaurant operations will make for an easy transition into his new role, which is very well deserved. Please congratulate Ethan on this new chapter of his career next time you see him at the club!

Multi-Factor Authentication coming soon
To greatly improve the security of your CYC membership account and help keep your data safe, we will be implementing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) that will be enabled on your account starting July 17. What does this mean? You will now have to use a multi-step login process on the website and/or App every eighth time you log in or when you log in from a new device. This will require you to enter a passcode that will be sent to your email on file to verify it is you that is logging in. For an instructional video, go to Vimeo.com/manage/videos/835886831/ privacy.
The CYC Tennis Fleet continues to meet for 90-minute drills weekly at Avon Oaks Country Club. Seen here at a recent match is Krystal Massey. This month we also have inter-club league matches 12-1:30 p.m. occurring on July 2 at Westwood CC, July 9 at Avon Oaks CC and July 23 at Lakewood CC. Doc-Side: A little thanks goes a long way
Did you know gratitude can boost your health?
When you’re overwhelmed or stressed out, practicing gratitude can shift your perspective.
Many studies show that practicing gratitude can help maintain a sense of calm and happiness, reduce depression and anxiety, lower our risk of disease, and flood the brain with feel-good chemicals like serotonin. Here are a few tips for cultivating gratitude and lessening stress in your everyday life:
• Keep a gratitude journal to reflect on the good things in your life.
• Reach out to say “thanks” to someone who is often there for you.
• Support your favorite charity, volunteer, or help a neighbor or loved one.
• Eat slowly and mindfully.
• Breathe and take five. Take five breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. Slowly count to five on each in-breath and out-breath.
Too often we get caught up in our busy lives and forget to take a moment to pause and reflect on what is going well and on the here and now. Perhaps during these summer months, you can make a conscious effort to share your gratitude with others—it’s good for your health!
