Meet our 110th Commodore Michael Mansuetto

With the wisdom of a chemist, adventurousness of a sailor and boater, and kind heart of a father and husband—Michael Mansuetto checks all the boxes. As the 110th Commodore, he is well-poised to lead the club.

The same skills he flexes as senior manager of research and development at Energizer will serve him well at the helm of CYC. “I lead a team of engineers and scientists to develop new innovations and products,” he says. “Success in my role requires me to work crossfunctionally with operations, procurement, marketing and sales, and this experience will enable me to work effectively with the Board of Trustees, the Management Committee and our professional staff.”

Projects and Priorities

“My #1 priority is to continue to reinforce CYC’s mission: ‘To promote family-oriented and friendly club activities anchored in the tradition of yachting,’” says Mansuetto. “It’s an incredible honor to be CYC’s 110th Commodore and at the same time I feel a deep sense of responsibility to honor the history and traditions of the club. Our focus will be to put our members first, ensuring we do everything we can to enhance the member experience. I want our members to have a smile on their face every time they leave our island.”

One of the first projects under his watch will happen next spring, with the installation of new B, C and North Basin finger docks, which will complete a multi-year dock replacement project that began in 2015. “This will ensure that CYC has safe and secure docks for decades to come,” he says.

Another challenge with economic uncertainty on the horizon will be to focus on fiscal responsibility and delivering maximum value to the members.

“The club is not immune to the labor shortages and inflation we see all around us,” he says. “As a team we must work diligently with Marc Dallas and his staff to continue to deliver a high-quality member experience. The

club is incredibly fortunate to have a full roster and a sizeable waiting list, and we must not take that for granted.”

A Little Backstory...

A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, Mansuetto grew up in a power-boating family, for many years enjoying the state’s rivers and inland lakes. After earning his B.S. in chemistry from Wheeling Jesuit, where he played soccer, he earned his PhD in chemistry from Northwestern.

“A college teammate gave me the nickname ‘Sweaty’ and it has stuck to this day,” he says.

After college, Mansuetto worked for the U.S. Department of Energy at Argonne National Laboratory. In 1996, he left Chicago and moved to Westlake to take a job with Energizer, where he has worked for more than 25 years.

The move to Westlake included an introduction to his future wife— Colleen—who as a leasing agent rented him an apartment.

“Colleen had started racing at CYC back in 1991 with long-time members John and Dee Walsh,” he recalls. “In 1998, after we had started dating, I was invited to come racing with the Walshes on their sailboat Läger. I immediately fell in love with sailboat racing.”

Today, the couple makes it a habit to walk the island any time they go to the club to say hello to friends who are on their boats or picnicking on the lawn.

A love of boating runs in their family. Their children Grace and Rob—who

are now adults and junior members of the club—attended Sail Camp and raced on the Junior Race team for many years.

“Building on his CYC Race Team experience, Rob was one of the founding members of the Bay Village High School sailing team, competing in several regional and national championships,” says Mansuetto. “CYC’s junior sailing program is truly one of the club’s greatest assets.”

Mansuetto has his own impressive racing record. He began racing on Team Läger after he moved to Cleveland, and joined P/C JB Walsh on Team Thing.

“Team Thing also includes P/C Larry Greathouse and P/C Dan Clevenger,” he says. “The four of us have spent many years together racing and we also compete together in the annual Walleye Tournament.”

Dedication and Service

His years of involvement at CYC include being Management Committee partner to P/C JB Walsh in 2013, which led to four years on the committee that culminated with the clubhouse renovation in 2017. He’s also served on the Ways and Means Committee and the organizing committees for the Beneteau 36.7 Great Lakes and North American Championships and the 75th Thistle Nationals.

After these experiences, he says he realized how much he enjoyed being involved and wanted to continue to serve the club.

“It’s vital that members continue to volunteer their time and talents, and I felt like I had an opportunity to help contribute to the rich history and traditions of the club,” he adds. “Fortunately, I was elected to the Board of Trustees and then ultimately to the Flag Line.”

In the end, whether boating with his family, racing on the lake, or managing efficient systems and innovation— Mansuetto lives up to the three adjectives he’d use to best describe himself: thoughtful, principled and responsible.

want to remind all to visit the Library where the CYC artists continue to exhibit their works monthly.

In November we are pleased to pres ent “Florence” by Lori Daugstrup Rosenbaum, an oil painting of a chair filled with warm, light colors, almost inviting the viewer to relax and take a pause for a moment somewhere, in order to enjoy the surroundings or search for a moment within their in ner feelings.

Stockholders Meeting

All members are invited to the Annual Stockholders Meeting on Friday, November 11 at 8 p.m. Note: There is no a la carte dining this evening.

Women’s Networking

On a recent trip to Ireland, P/C Kurt McGovern, with Fleet Captain Tracey and Board Member Lee Stacey met with the oldest living Admiral at the Royal Cork Yacht Club, Bill O’Mahony. This photo shows the exchange of our CYC Burgee and the Royal Cork Burgee that is now hanging in our Commodores Bar.

Art Fleet

Hard to believe that soon we’ll begin to see Christmas decorations all over town. This also means that our fel low members will return in great numbers inside the CYC clubhouse to enjoy dinners and other events, so I

Lori is well known as an artist in Cleve land as well as Key Largo, Florida, where her works can be seen at the Reef Gallery of the Ocean Reef Club. The Whitlock Building in Crocker Park, Westlake, also has an extensive col lection of her works on display. The Art Fleet wishes to all a safe and pleasant holiday season!

Welcome New Member

Welcome to Andrew Barr, who is self-em ployed and plans to buy a boat in the future, and join the Bowling and Golf Fleets.

The first full season of the Office of Waterfront Activities is in the books. Thank you to our Board and Flag Line, particularly Commodore Dan Clevenger and Management Committee Chair Mike Harris, for the vision to establish the office and for the support throughout. Also to General Manager Marc Dallas and his peerless staff for the support. They made it easy.

Among our three major programs, Swim Team, Junior Race and Sail Camp, we made a lot of positive changes. We have more to come in 2023 as we continue to support and nurture our youth that is the future of our club. For Swim Team, a big shout out to Head Coach Sophie for her hard work and dedication. And what a group of great coaches! Also to Chairs Emad and Alejandra Estemalik for their vision and guidance. In terms of Junior Race, the results speak for themselves. They were dominant. Thank you Head Coach Karl! And to coaches Elizabeth and Brady. Most importantly, thank you to Jim Lucey for standing in for me when my duties pulled me elsewhere. In terms of Sail Camp, it was a continued year of success under the guidance of Chair Laura Goldberg and the wonderful

management of Morgan Noonan.

For our fleets, I had a ball with the Wet Hens! Thank you to Chair Deb Wadden and Gail Cudak for a memorable summer of 420 sailing and kayaking. Can’t wait for 2023. I also really enjoyed my time with Sail Race. Chair Jeff Herzog and Social Chair Caryn Candisky helped me get reinvolved with a fleet that I had not been part of in over a decade. I would be remiss if I also did not recognize the great work of our Race Committee headed by Trevor Lyons along with some terrific help from John Yingling.

Thanks too to all involved in our Adult Learn To programs, particularly Charlie Essi. We will do it again in 2023. Speaking of 2023, plans are in the making for a number of off-season seminars and presentations. We are also looking at new programs, including a Safety Town for our 3- to 5-year-olds.

Finally thank you to all the parent volunteers across the board. But mostly, thank you to all of you who got involved. That’s what this is all about.

Waterfront programs flourished in 2022, looking ahead

Power Fleet toasting ’22 and taking a peek ahead

Power Fleet ended the 2022 cruising season with a soldout Clambake at Center Isle. Skippers for each event received appreciation gifts at the clambake and P/C Brian and Lisa Cruse accepted the dubious “Hard Luck Skipper” Award with great humor.

Deb and I are looking forward to chairing the 2023 CYC Power Fleet. We already have a tentative sched ule developed for the upcoming season. In June we’re planning stops at the Crew’s Nest, CIC, Pelee Island and Rondeau. In July we’d like to visit Kelley’s Island and following Regatta depart on our Long Cruise.

Wet Hens sailing into fall activities

Each month, Wet Hens are invited to gather for dinner at CYC on the sec ond Wednesday of the month. This month’s dinner will take place on November 9. Cocktails in the bar at 5:30 p.m. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Please make reservations through the CYC app, website or by calling the club.

Wet Hens Monthly Happy Hour

This month’s Happy Hour will be on November 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Sarita in Lakewood. We hope you’ll drop in during that time for a drink, an app and some lively conversation. Each month during the off-season, Wet Hens Happy Hour will be at a dif ferent location on the last Wednesday of the month.

Hope Center Christmas Tree

Wet Hens Elves are busy gathering the names of immigrant and refugee children on Cleveland’s West Side who could use some of our Christ mas cheer this winter. The Hope Tree will be up with name tags right after Thanksgiving. Grab a tag or two and shop for some kids who need it most. Please drop off your gifts—only in gift bags, please—no later than Sun day, December 11 at the front desk in the clubhouse. It’s a quick turnaround but the elves need time to organize and deliver the gifts.

Many thanks in advance for CYC’s

We’ve decided to combine the two long cruises into one 10-day trip for all our members to enjoy. Stops will include Port Clinton Yacht Club, Old Club, Lexington, North Channel Yacht Club and Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

In August, we’re planning on our traditional Cedar Point Cruise and Vermilion Cruise.

Thanks to P/C Rick and Suzan Adams for all their ef forts to make the 2022 Power Fleet a huge success!

We wish you an enjoyable holiday season.

The Stars are Coming!

CYC and the Star Fleet will be hosting the 2023 Western Hemi sphere Championship September 9-14.

The fleet has a long history of holding national events and even a Worlds Championship in 1990. We are looking for sponsorship and volunteers to help us show CYC hospitality.

Changes to Wet Hens Leadership

I have truly enjoyed my two years as Wet Hens chair. Many thanks to the committee chairs who have man aged the Wet Hens subcommittees so smoothly. They have made my time as “Chief Chick” a delight.
