In the December 2024 quarter, resident and visitor spending in the City of Hobart was estimated at $446.5M. This was up 17.5% from the previous quarter due to Christmas/Black Friday Spending, but only 0.5% up from the same quarter a year ago. Tourism and Entertainment spending was up 1.5% from the previous year which led to night-time spending increasing by 2%.
Families were estimated to represent the largest spending cohort in all categories. Retirees spend more on food (36% share), while young adults are naturally more highly represented in Tourism and Entertainment (34%).

Over the twelve months to the March 2025 quarter, the CPI for Hobart rose 1.4%, well below the Australian Capital Cities average of 2.4%. This figure was down from the March 2024 Quarter where the CPI annual change was 3.1%.
The household spending category that saw the largest price growth over the year was Alcohol and Tobacco (7.1%). Transport saw the largest fall (-2.2%).

The average 4 quarter unemployment rate for the City of Hobart was 2.9% and for Greater Hobart 4.2%. Both figures were slightly up from the year before. There were an average of 1,766 online job vacancies advertised in the December 2024 quarter, down 4.5% from the year before.

The value of building approvals in the City of Hobart area was estimated at $200.1M in the 12 months to December 2024 quarter, down 13% from the year before ($231M). Residential building approvals were up (+18%), while non-residential fell (-30%).
Education ($187.3M) and Health ($137.1.M) buildings represented the largest value of non-residential buildings approved in the City of Hobart over the three years to December 2024.
