EDITOR-IN-CHIEF We as a community can agree to disagree on many things both political and religious. And even though our opinions can remain unwavering about those topics, we can usually agree on things that are monumental.

There are times in a person’s life when they look back on monumental moments: a wedding, childbirth or starting their career. But not so common are the times when the President of The United States speaks directly to your town. Such was the moment at the UTEP basketball game when President Barack Obama spoke to a crowded gym about the importance a basketball championship made in 1966, how it moved a country forward. I still get chills thinking back to sitting in the stadium and seeing our president say, “The Miners weren’t just champs on the court, they helped change the rules of the game, both on the court and in life. They didn’t know it at the time, but their contributions to the Civil Rights Movement was as important as any other.” Such is the monumental time we are in, knowing that Pope Francis, the “Pope of the People,” was just a few miles away from El Paso, speaking in our sister country. These are times in which the community comes together to share special, once-in-a-lifetime moments.

We may not see eye to eye on controversial, or even basic subjects, but we can proudly stand together as El Pasoans and revel in moments where President Obama greets us directly or the Pope visits right across the border.

This month, as we continue to talk about the greatness of El Paso, we discuss local stories that are both monumental and gratifying. Along with a story about Pope Francis - that goes beyond a religious or political dialogue we have stories about the spirit of giving, the impact that our Congressman Beto O’Rourke has had both here in El Paso and in the Middle East, and the local brand that wants everyone to know that El Paso is great. And isn’t that the truth? El Paso is great. The positive impact that El Pasoans have created transcends our community and is the reason our unique city has been listed as one of the “Top Ten Cities To Move To.” So whether you’re changing the community in a positive way, by impacting a child’s life through Make a Wish, selflessly donating time to the Assistance League of El Paso or you’re witnessing the Pope, know that you are a part of

A Divine Gift

What exact details went into making the boots?

We put a finishing on the cross and as for the boot itself, there is a bone-colored calfskin and it is all one piece. Usually boots are made with four pieces, if you look at the pictures of the boots it was done all in one piece, it is unique design and very simplistic. It was all done completely by hand.

If you were to present the boots to the Pope, what would you tell him?

I would first ask for his blessing upon my family and myself. I would then let him know that they were made up completely of immigrants or descendants of immigrants.

Finally, I would tell him how humbled I am to be able to gift the boots to him, being that he is the representative of Christ.

SAPLE has a proposition for all El Pasoans: to fall in love with their city. The homegrown selfstyled “cultural collective” is a group of like-

minded folks who love all things El Paso and

Co-creator/co-owner Gabriel Acuña was born in El Paso, but was shortly whisked away to other parts of the world after his father joined the military. He and his family occasionally visited El Paso in between tours of duty.

Shortly after his father’s military retirement, Acuña graduated from high school. An unwavering love for his hometown and the desire to return were the impetus for Acuña to forego a friend’s offer to house him while he attended college in the Northern Virginia/ Washington D.C. metroplex and come back home.

“When I graduated high school in the Virginia/ [Washington] D.C. area, one of my friend’s parents offered to let me stay at their house so I could go to college,” Acuña said. “But I missed home and I knew I wanted to come back to El Paso.”

So in 1995, that’s exactly what he did.

After graduating with a Media Design degree from UTEP, he gained a position at a local marketing agency. There he began brainstorming with other like-minded team members, thus fleshing out the idea that spawned OSAPLE. “At that time I felt more and more that El Paso had a lot to offer,” he said. “I kept thinking people should feel proud of their city, and that’s when the embryo of OSAPLE began forming.”

Simply “El Paso” spelled backwards, OSAPLE is essentially a de facto marketing agency with a threefold mission: to dispel the notion the city is lacking in cool things to do; to help infuse pride and love for the city; and to support all things local.

You’ve probably seen local girls sporting the candy apple red, Coca-Cola-inspired “Chuco Chula” t-shirts, the ubiquitous “I [Star] EP” bumper stickers, or perhaps the very modest black and white “I Liked El Paso Before It Was Cool” shirt. These, along with other unique designs, make up the merchandise portion of OSAPLE. Weekly podcast, Chuco Talks, in conjunction with the city’s only local radio station, Rios Radio, is another way OSAPLE furthers its pro-El Paso vision. The show is a weekly bulletin that began in 2012 as a way to bring everybody up to speed on local cultural and lifestyle happenings.

“Chuco Talks is an offshoot of OSAPLE; it’s essentially the broadcast aspect of it” Acuña said “The show is great in building exposure of El Paso and killing that notion that there’s nothing to do here.”

Each week the podcast features new bars, clubs, restaurants and other establishments that have opened up, along with any upcoming events.

Acuña says through the years since OSAPLE’s inception, people have become increasingly receptive and supportive of its mission. The only source of revenue for the group comes from merchandise sales, which have steadily increased. He stresses though, the vision for OSAPLE does not center on dollar signs.

“We’re a group that very much is about the El Paso culture and projecting that through everything we do; the entire idea is to build awareness and instill pride,” Acuña said. “We’re by no means a business.

We’re not here to make a profit, only to see the city succeed.”

Gayla is a Seattle native, yet she and her family have chosen to call El Paso home. After being planted here years ago, when it came time for hubby to retire from the military, there was no other place quite like home. Knowing at some point, it would only be a matter of time before she and her family would embark upon the journey of starting the family business. Her accounting skills and her husband’s technology savviness, was the budding start of a recipe for success.

The biggest risk I’ve taken: Cashing in my 401k. My husband and I needed start-up capital, I contributed my 401k and he contributed funds as well. We quickly learned that most banks are not necessarily willing to partner with start-up companies unless there is a relational history.

We definitely had to lean on credit cards and line of credit. There were times we had to rely on the line of credit just to make payroll. We are forever thankful to Weststar Bank for taking a chance with us.

Business lessons to remember: The value of having a mentor. We currently have several, but that wasn’t the case in the beginning. We did our research, started with a business plan that we made every attempt to follow and updated annually, but it wasn’t enough. There are things that you just don’t know. We knew the military community, however we didn’t have those local connections. Sometimes you truly don’t know what you need to know and that is where a mentor can be of great service.

The moment we knew we made it: Within the first 12 months of opening our doors, we hired four full time employees. We initially started with only my husband and I. In the beginning, our daughter worked part-time, now she’s our longest standing employee. We’ve also moved three times due to expansion, thankfully it’s all been within the same building.

My everyday mantra: Treat people better than they deserve. Sometimes it’s best to let things go for your sake and that of your business.

I’m glad that I’ve never: Put my faith in what others say or do, it remains only in God. This

That is the motto of the Assistance League of El

Paso, a not-for-profit organization that was first established as Assistance Guild of El Paso in 1967. It was charted as the 50th chapter of the National Assistance League® on June 9, 1970.

For an organization that has a rich reputation for helping the El Paso community for over 40 decades, it is run by a caring and dedicated staff, all of whom are volunteers. There are no paid staff members. Monies received for running the program come from grants and proceeds from their thrift store located on 2728 East Yandell, in central El Paso. The store receives donations from the community and those proceeds help fund their four major initiatives.

Operation School Bell started in 1968 and is a program in which they work with all the county school districts and provide clothing for some of the elementary schools neediest children. They provide socks, undergarments, pants or jeans (depending on whether or not the school requires uniforms) polo shirts, and/or t-shirts. The children also receive a pair of shoes, toiletries, and a lined, hooded jacket. This program serves children in grades one through five and 3,800 elementary children benefitted from the generosity of the Assistance League of El Paso in 2015.

PASO (Put A Smile On) Bears was started in January of 1989 and is a program in which the organization donates stuffed teddy bears to local law enforcement and first respondents, to help comfort children who are in a crisis situation and are placed at La Posada (emergency housing for homeless families victims of domestic violence), the Ronald McDonald House or other locations where such children may be needing comfort. Last year, 500 bears were donated for this cause.

and toiletries for all victims-men, women, and children. They work closely with the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence in El Paso.

December 11, 2015 marked Macy’s National Believe Day, and for 16-year-old Felicity, it was the day when her wish came true. Make-AWish grants the wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Felicity’s special experience was part of the Macy’s Believe campaign. Based on The New York Sun’s famous “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” editorial, Macy’s Believe campaign invites believers of all ages to drop off letters to Santa at special designated letterboxes within Macy’s stores.

For the seventh year in a row, Macy’s and MakeA-Wish have teamed up on this campaign.

Let’s be honest, break ups can be a horrible thing. There were probably some negative things that were said that changed your perception of your ex. If you’re willing to give your relationship another shot, make sure you work through every misunderstanding.

Getting back together with your ex can be easier than starting a new relationship. You won’t be starting from the beginning. The relationship is more anticipated because there is no awkwardness and you will be starting with a foundation of experience together.

Be realistic. You have seen what works and doesn’t work in your relationship. This is your chance to change your ways. It’s time to fix your old habits and begin the relationship with a clean slate.

Be conscious that you are going to have to stand up for your relationship and each other. Your family and friends only have your best interest at heart and they want what’s best for you. They were there during your break up and will probably not be amused that you went back to your ex. Giving your relationship another chance just shows that you are willing to fight for who you love.

Having broken up should have taught you a lesson.

You know what it’s like to not have one another. You now understand how important commitment is. From here on out, both of you need to diminish doubts and work on increasing the security in your relationship every day.

There’s a reason why you two keep going back to one another. You can call it fate or destiny, but there is obviously something special that keeps bringing you two together. Go in to the relationship with a positive mindset and follow your heart.

“He’s cute and nice and sweet and SO smart,” a friend of Morgen’s, who’d kill me if I revealed her name in print, told me prior to my first introduction to him. The day I met him, I was immediately disarmed by his easy intelligence as he described what he’d be doing at Ferrari as casually as he might tell me what he had for lunch.

According to his twin brother, Patrick, they grew up building things that later helped shape their vocational preferences.

“We played a lot of Legos, which I think was a huge foundation in both of our careers,” he says.

“We built a lot of things and it was always his idea.”

March, 2016 Morgen’s interest in engines developed while enrolled in an agricultural mechanics class, explains former teacher, George Brooks, who proudly remembers Morgen as “always being at the top, always being special.”

Brooks gave Morgen’s class a project in which students were to take apart an engine, identify the parts, put it back together and have it start. Brooks says his heart swelled when he saw Morgen years later and he told him about his new endeavor at Ferrari.

“He told me ‘I got started when I did that small engine in your class’,” recalls Brooks.

While at MIT, Morgen continued to stand out for both his intellectual capacity and kindhearted disposition.

Dr. Wai Cheng is the Director of the Sloan Automotive Lab at MIT and served as Morgen’s thesis advisor in graduate school.

“He demonstrates significant ingenuity and resiliency in solving problems,” says Cheng before adding, “he has ‘mailman’ quality, and by that I mean he always delivers. Morgen is friendly and easygoing, but very hardworking and very good at what he does.”

It was these qualities that caught the eye of Ferrari upon choosing Morgen -- among hundreds of applicants -- to work on the dream machines of Enzo Ferrari. Morgen left El Paso in November of 2015 to start work in Maranello, where he continues to impress his supervisors and major companies like Shell with his ingenuity, resourcefulness and aplomb.

For now, Morgen is enjoying life in the fast lane while learning Italian and traveling Europe as friends, family and mentors proudly track his progress stateside. Lucky are we who are along for the ride.

Colored contacts have been slowly making a comeback (like it’s the 90s!). Contacts now come in all colors, and some of them even come with prescription. It’s a fun way to change your look once in a while. Try it for fun one night out on the town, or if you’re not brave enough for that yet, you could wait until Halloween to try!

If you’re going to an event that requires suit and tie, break the mold a little bit and try to coordinate an entire outfit (socks included) that’s the same color. I know it might be difficult to find socks, pants, a shirt, tie and blazer that are exactly the same color, but at least try to get the same hue or tone. If not, just your pants and blazer as the pop of color is fine. The followers most often come from frigid locales from all over the globe, but the pull of their beloved game is strong and while it may be strange to think of these ice gliding warriors residing on the shores of the Rio Grande, the city and the university seem ready to adopt them and in exchange these outsiders are ready to adapt to their new home, thus changing the culture of El Paso once more. It is a change that the warm people of El Paso will undoubtedly embrace with the same character they have come to be revered for: kindness, excitement, and encouragement.

At a university and in a city, that just recently celebrated a landmark in embracement through athletics, these Miners may have enough talent and enough excitement to make El Pasoans once again embrace a beautiful game through unlikely heroes.

ut in the most western part of El Paso lies a restaurant like no other,

one that holds history in ever corner you look. You’ll either wonder if

you stepped foot inside a museum or an antique shop. At first glance

you may find the lack of a theme, however, if you look closer you’ll realize

that you’re not eating at a Peppe’s Restaurant but rather at your old home.

Peppe’s story begins in 1954 when Edgar Griggs and his wife, Rita, first opened Griggs Restaurant on Doniphan. The Griggs were an El Paso establishment and local favorite for many generations until their passing and closing of their original restaurants. Though the Griggs may no longer be with us, Jose “Pepe” Morales has carried on their spirit, traditions and original recipes at his restaurant.

Starting as a busboy at the age of 15, Morales worked alongside his father with the Griggs family for many decades. After their passing, Morales inherited the original Griggs’ recipes and opened his restaurant 10 years ago, just about three miles from the original Griggs Restaurant.

In the past 60 years a lot has changed, but the one thing that stays the same is the Griggs style of service and recipe. From your chile bottles to your special “treat” at the end, Morales has not changed a single thing in his 30 years of service. Even outside of the restaurant, the same families are still coming home to eat.

“One of the best things [about the restaurant] is you see generations of people come and go,” Morales said. “You start with children before they are born. You watch them grow, taste the food, then all of sudden you see them with their own children.”

Along with the quality service is also a story for almost every piece of décor and furniture inside. If given the opportunity, have a seat with Morales and ask him about anything you see beside you. You’ll be amazed at what you can learn in just one sitting.

When sitting with Morales you begin to see a connection to everything in the restaurant.

Most of his “collection” of items comes from his personal past or from his customers throughout the years.

What you can learn from Morales is that he loves what he does. The passion he has for Peppe’s Restaurant and his guests is something he wants to continue for many generations to come.

“If you like what you do, it won’t feel like a job,” he said. “For me this is not a job, this is fun. To be able to sit you down in our home and treat you like our guest, which you deserve, is fun. As long as I am capable and able to do it, I will continue to do this.”

To this day many people in and from El Paso are rediscovering the Griggs Restaurant daily through Peppe’s continuing tradition.

As the interview came to an end, a couple traveling between Dallas and San Diego made their first visit to Peppe’s and shared that they were once patrons of the original Griggs Restaurant. The verdict – just as they remembered.

In addition to being a favorite on St. Patrick’s Day, corned beef and cabbage also has incredible health benefits and is packed with all kinds of vitamins and minerals.

Corned beef is high in protein, B-Vitamins, thiamin, and zinc and should be eaten in small portions due to the high fat content of this meat. Cabbage is high in Vitamin C and folic acid and is loaded with fiber. Potatoes are an excellent source of Vitamin B-6, which is an important contributor in carbohydrate and protein metabolism. It turns energy from food into energy that your body can utilize. Guinness’ dark beer is high in flavonoids when consumed in moderation and reduces the risk of blood clots that cause heart attacks.

So this St. Patty’s Day, “Eat, Drink and Be Merry” but only in moderation, and remember to always do it healthily.

Directions: Choose a grass fed, thick slab corned beef brisket. Some corned beef brisket comes with a spice bag. You may choose to use that however I prefer to use peppercorns and bay leaves instead.

In a large stockpot place the brisket in the bottom of the pot, add the spices, cracked peppercorns, bay leaves and stoned ground mustard (or if you prefer the package of spices). Cover the brisket with water and one bottle of Guinness draught beer and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat, cover and simmer for 2-2 1/2 hours.

While the beef is still cooking, cut the potatoes in halves and place them in a separate pot, cover with water and set aside. Wash the cabbage and carrots and cut into quarters, along with the onion, and

Directions: Preheat oven 350 degrees. Lightly toast the raisin bread, set aside. Slice the Irish soda bread 1/2 in. thick and cut into small cubes.

Use about 1/2 of loaf, and then cut raisin bread into small bite size cubes, place into a baking dish. Add apple, pear, walnuts and raisins on top of bread, then pour melted butter over pudding.

In a mixing bowl, put eggs, nut milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and Irish whiskey.

Mix well and pour liquid over the bread and fruit mixture, packing down so that the bread will absorb all the contents from the bowl.

Place baking dish in a roasting pan and pour boiling water around the baking dish. Bake 45 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

eware the Ides of March! Many of us have heard this odd line, but most people have no idea what that means,

or certainly where it comes from, or what in the world ‘Ides’ are in the first place.

The Roman calendar had divisions in it based on the different phases of the moon, and these divisions were called ‘Ides.’ The Ides were supposed to correspond to the day of the full moon, and usually landed on either the 15th or 13th in most months. The Ides of March, which fell on the 15th, signified the beginning of a consular year in Rome, because that was when two yearly-elected Roman consuls began their occupancy of office. This tradition continued from 220 B.C.E. to 153 B.C.E. To the common citizen, the most important thing to know about the Ides of March was that it was the deadline to settle debts.

The Ides of March also marked an important cultural festival, one that celebrated Anna Perenna. By Greek myths, Anna Perenna was supposedly the sister of Dido, a tragic, suicidal Carthaginian queen. Of course, that festival has been supplanted by perhaps the most famous event to occur on the Ides of March: in 44 B.C.E., Julius Ceasar was assassinated on the Ides of March, at the foot of a statue of Pompey where the Senate was meeting. The

assassination immediately overshadowed all other associations with the Ides of March, and the phrase began to colloquially refer to Julius Caesar’s assassination. This tie to March 15th was further solidified by Shakespeare’s famous and dramatized version of the events in the play Julius Caesar, in which the soothsayer speaks, “Beware the Ides of March.” The date has been associated with doom ever since.

Whether or not the Ides of March hold any prophecies of doom can be left to individual discretion, but it does give us a chance to remember one of the world’s most famous historical figures and his untimely death on the infamous Ides of March. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

ow do you feel about rolling green hills? Historical sites? What about awesome food, fantastic old buildings, monuments and architecture spanning multiple centuries? If you answered with some variation of “love it!”, then Edinburgh is the city for you. The Scottish capital city of Edinburgh is one of the most interesting

cities in the world. It sits on the east coast of Scotland and is the seventh most populous city in the United Kingdom. Edinburgh is known for its breathtaking scenery, historic landmarks, and spectacular pub fare.

In Edinburgh, a location that is a must-see is Calton Hill, a hill near the center of the city topped with monuments and interesting architecture. While visiting, it becomes clear why Edinburgh earned the nickname “Athens of the North” in the 18th century based on monuments with classical Greek influence. Such monuments include Charles Cockerell and William Playfair’s National Monument of Scotland, which was dedicated to the Scottish Troops who passed in the Napoleonic Wars.

This 19th century monument was modeled from the Athens’ Parthenon and is unique in that it remains unfinished due to lack of funds three years after ground broke. The hill also includes the Nelson Monument, the Robert Burns Monument, and others – definitely a must see for lovers of architecture and history.

While visiting Edinburgh one should strongly consider walking to your destinations as opposed to taking cabs - it is a great way to appreciate the sites as well as to get acquainted with the city in a more personal way. The city itself is beautiful – historic buildings, interesting shops, and stone-paved streets make walking much less of a chore, and the time spent to arrive at your destination will seem minimal.

You can get up close to the castle without paying, but in order to view the inside a ticket (currently listed at 16 pounds) is necessary. For history lovers, this is no question a must do.
