elcome to the men’s issue, dedicated to the businessmen of El Paso

that keep this city interesting. In these pages you’ll meet men in a very

eclectic range of business sectors, from medicine to media. Hold on to your

seats, it’s going to be a fun ride! Yes, we have something for you car buffs too! In this issue you will get to know several admirable men, starting with our cover star of the month, Dr. Frank Agullo of Southwest Plastic Surgery. I have a lot of admiration for what Frank does—he is not only one of the best cosmetic surgeons in El Paso with a very successful practice, but he is also an involved member of this community with a heart of gold. Frank is a philanthropist to the core, not only for his devotion to local nonprofits, but also as a doctor who has helped children in need around the world. You will read more about our man of the hour in the pages to come. Another man I’d like to highlight is a longtime colleague of mine, Brad Dubow of Townsquare Media. Radio and magazine media are separate worlds, but what Brad and I do on a daily basis is not that different. Not many people in town can say that they know what it’s like to run a media company. I look to Brad as a member of a select few in our community for support, advice or just a casual exchange of stories, sometimes over a meal and maybe even some drinks. Lastly, I would like to point out something interesting I have discovered in this issue. I sit back and look at all of our “Men in Business” profiles and I see something, something different and new. These men are clearly the future, a new generation of business men in El Paso, a young batch of talented men in very different fields that at first glance look surprisingly young, hip and a little more laid back. I like that, thinking that times are changing and we are moving to new times and a newer El Paso. My hope is that our younger generations will take this city to another level and help it become the big city I know we are destined to be. At the end of the day I sit back and reflect on the many years of owning my business: Men and women are not that different, we may have different styles of doing things and we might possess different attributes, however, we are common in setting goals for ourselves, trying our best to navigate the business world, and doing what we do at the end of the day for the people we love most. Enjoy the men’s issue!

their generation, are deeply entrenched in social media. His daughters Jacqueline, Carly and Katelynn, who’ve all followed in their father’s footsteps building careers in media and show business, are especially savvy. “We’ve made our mark in the radio, and it’s not going away anytime soon.” He said, explaining how the business had changed in recent years. “But you’ve got to diversify, and we have. When a client comes to me, we have numbers of ways to use radio’s target audiences, or digital components like Facebook buying campaigns or over-the-top campaigns that hook up to smart TVs and cellphones. Of course, we can always sell sponsorship into an event, like our bridal event. The point is our clients aren’t limited to our radio ecosystem, even though that’s still often a great option.” Radio may be one of the oldest media formats, but it’s not going anywhere. With experienced, outside the box thinkers like Brad Dubow running the show, our air waves are bound to rock on.

Dr. BrianWGiles Cutting OF Edge Veterinary Medicine

ON THE

hen it comes to pet care and keeping

your furry friend healthy, you and your

veterinarian make quite the team. While you may

hold the title Most Valuable Pet owner, it is our veterinarians who shine in situations where it counts

the most. The primary focus of your veterinarian is to

diagnose, monitor and treat any ailments, as well as promote

your animal’s well-being. Dr. Brian Giles grew up on a farm around barn cats and developed a fascination with the critters. When it came time to choose a career path, it seemed fitting to develop that interest into a profession where he could be surrounded by and care for animals. Since the age of 17, Brian has not had a job outside a vet clinic, and he’s worked all over Texas.

As a general practitioner and associate veterinarian at

Northeast Veterinary Clinic, Brian has few limitations, which

means he has the opportunity to do an array of things. Although

he is not board certified in a particular area of professional

specialty, he has a passion for feline medicine. While he can

practice general pet care, he is also able to perform surgeries that may be necessary. Orthopedic surgeries that help with

common knee problems in smaller to mid-size dogs are only part of the surgeries he is able to perform. He also works with fracture repairs as well. At the Northeast Veterinary Clinic he has gained more experience than any other clinic at which he’s previously worked due to the unique and complex cases that he has come across. One of most common diagnosed medical problems these days is periodontal disease. That is where dental radiographs come in hand. “Doing that job and addressing those health issues well, does require good dental imaging, and we have the technology and those capabilities … we’re working on the front edge as much as we can, in terms of dentistry,” Brian says. While the Northeast Veterinary Clinic also has a digital x-ray setup and ultrasound, there is a big difference between pet imaging and

imaging for humans. The difference is access. Advanced imaging like CT scans and MRIs for pets are harder to come by than what it would be for us humans. In vet medicine, it is still very valuable and comes down to trying to solve the riddle of the litany of potential animal ailments. One thing often misunderstood about veterinarians is the difficulty in translating what your pet is feeling into an understanding of the medical process and their needs. There is some detective work that is involved, since animals cannot answer the very simple questions of, “how are you feeling?” or, “what is wrong?” They are unable to provide their history, and that’s when veterinarians like Brian step in. Even though it can be frustrating for pet owners when different diagnostics are needed, they play a big part in piecing together the problem, or bigger picture, for veterinarians.

It is essential for pets, much like humans, to receive the necessary care and checkups that are imperative to their health—may it be for preventative measures or other health problems. A large number of problems that veterinarians see are often preventable. Whether it’s an infectious disease, the parvo virus, distemper virus infection, reproductive complications in the form of dystocia or trouble delivering and even breast tumors, all of the these complications are preventable with vaccines and the routine spay and neuter surgeries. “It’s one of those things where for the community of greater El Paso,

Rob Lovett The Lovett Law Firm 619 Arizona Ave (915) 757-9999 lovettlawfirm.com

Rob Lovett “Of those to whom much is given, much is required.” Rob Lovett still remembers his law professor repeating that wisdom during a lecture some 25 years ago. The maxim perfectly encapsulates the ethos with which Rob has approached his legal career since then. He was blessed with the abilities to become a lawyer—in return— he delivers the utmost dedication to his clients. To that end, Rob and his team approach each case with the same rigor, no matter if a victory promises $7,000 or $700,000. Done with complete transparency: The firm assures that the client is aware of all of their options beforehand and, when settling, exactly how much each party will be paid. Revenue isn’t Lovett Law’s number one priority, which is, specifically, why Rob doesn’t consider himself a businessman. He explains the sentiment, saying: “Sure, attorneys make good livings, but the money is honestly like a fringe benefit for me. There’s a code of ethics attached to practicing law. You’re supposed to go to law school to become a lawyer and serve clients, not to get rich. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case, but it is for me … it is for all the firm’s other attorneys too.”

Like his parents, Russell has made a career out of helping people. In his freshman year of high school, Russell decided to become a lawyer so he could serve vulnerable populations. After graduating from Baylor Law, Russell worked in a number of different legal areas, from criminal defense to corporate representation. In the end, however, he chose to become a personal injury lawyer because he thought it was where he could truly help the vulnerable. He explained the transition saying: “I liked my previous jobs, but here I feel like I get to do the most for those who have been wronged. They’ve been injured and, more than anything, they just want to be heard. It’s my job to give them a voice. To make sure the jury and the judge listen.”

fulfilled. As the years rolled on, however, global market forces began driving producers to cheaper labor markets south of the border and overseas. By 2000, El Paso manufacturing seemed finished, those solid factory jobs replaced, partially at least, by positions at the new call-centers.

By all measures, that move has proven to be a good one. El Paso Paper Box has grown enormously since its founding, forcing Paul to relocate the factory two separate times onto bigger properties. With its current 105,000 square foot facility on Zane Grey St., El Paso Paper Box is now the foremost folding carton producer in this region.

El Paso Paper Box’s success is exceptional for a number of reasons. Not only did the local company defy America’s manufacturing downturn, but it bucked industry specific trends as well. Most notably, the folding carton landscape has become increasingly consolidated over the past decade, with a few big corporations swallowing up their smaller rivals. El Paso Paper Box, however, has stayed competitive by offering great customer service and making large investments in new technology. All in all, Paul has spent over $12 million on new machines in just the past three years alone. Paul doesn’t expect his company’s growth to slow anytime soon. As long as he continues on the same path, investing in his business and maintaining the strong relationships he’s built, the strong economy should carry El Paso Paper Box forward. The CEO further explained his optimism, saying: “Everything’s been much better since the current administration took office, honestly ... I don’t see any reason this city, or this country for that matter, can’t become manufacturing strongholds again.” El Paso Paper Box is proof that they can.

Nicholas Riley Nicholas Riley, husband and father of two, was born and raised in El Paso. He moved to San Antonio for college where he entered the water industry. Upon returning to El Paso, it became his commitment to be able to provide better quality of water by bringing innovation and technological advances to our community. He built a team that started as a water filtration company to improve access to clean water. That was the mission until he saw a way to help even more. Mr. Riley began looking at air quality and its effects. Poor air quality is a risk factor that worsens asthma, the most common chronic condition among children. Indoor air is no better than outdoor. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency studies show that levels of several organisms range from 2-5 times higher indoors than outdoors. The World Health Organization indicated that indoor air pollution is the #1 health hazard today. This made it his obligation to bring Healthway to El Paso. Healthway has been in the air quality business since early 1980s. Given a grant by the US government to produce technology, they created the brand Pure Wellness. El Paso Water Softeners, powered by Pure, is providing scientifically cleaner water and air equaling a Certified Pure Wellness Home. Mr. Riley will ensure this market is never left behind.

Upon graduating high school here in El Paso, Jorge moved to San Antonio to continue his college education. During his time out there, he began his journey in the granite, marble and countertop business. After completing his college career and working as a warehouse assistant for a year, Jorge returned back home. It was then that he started working in sales at a car lot in West El Paso. Having previously worked with his brother-inlaw at the countertop business in San Antonio and needing a change of pace, Jorge became a first-time business owner. Jorge started J&R Stone Supply with his brother-in-law in 2012. Business began with the sales of marble and granite tooling along with sinks. After about two years the business was upgraded to include stone countertops. As Brazil is one of the world’s top natural stone exporters, Jorge makes it a point to make trips there every three months. “It really makes a difference when you go in there and select the stone personally,” he says. Not to mention, five of his locations have been the most profitable in their respective market in El Paso. Not only has he expanded his bar experience into East El Paso (EPTX, Tipsy Tiger, Murray’s and Sanchez), but Dickey is well known for revitalizing the once “cursed” Cincinnati Street with his bar College Dropout and the upcoming Chino Chido. A member of UTEP’s fraternity Alpha Kappa Lambda, he felt that El Paso was missing out on the college experience commonly felt in other cities. Now, companies need a comprehensive social media and digital strategy to stay competitive. In addition to TV, print, and radio, marketers are expected to produce a constant stream of thoughtful and engaging digital content to keep pace with their audience’s ever-shortening attention span. It’s a challenging landscape, but it’s one that promises plenty of opportunities to those who know how to navigate it. Gilbert Jorgenson, the founder of Leo Marketing, has welcomed this new media reality with open arms. Before getting into marketing, Gilbert worked as a photojournalist at KVIA-TV for almost a decade. In the demanding environment of television news, he learned to produce accurate stories at a breakneck pace under strict deadlines. “When you’re working in news, there’s no second take. You have to nail the shot the first time and there are no excuses,” Gilbert explained. He now uses a similar workflow at Leo Marketing, always driving his eight-person staff to produce creative content while staying efficient. Together, the team is qualified to create comprehensive marketing strategies and execute them fluently—without any compromises to quality.

June, 2019 to get on a track and have somebody with experience teach you about what it takes to drive a 4.0-liter, six-cylinder horizontally opposed engine that puts out 520 horsepower. You’re probably going to need a new set $1,000 tires because, as Teri described it, “they’re are going to get a beating.” If you can afford the $60,000-and-above sticker price for the car, the $275 course fee will look like an absolute steal. Plus, in addition to all the racetrack adrenaline, you get a scenic tour of southern New Mexico, a T-shirt and a dinner banquet. It would be easy to dismiss the PCA as a boys club. However, as I spoke to some of its members and saw them speak to each other, Teri’s word resonated with what I saw and experienced. In fact, the PCA was often run by women like Fran Walker, Dede Rogers and now, Teri, who made the club friendly to spouses, organized the social aspects of it and promoted its cohesion. The history of its members is intertwined with the history of the club. PCA legend Bill Walker and his wife Fran were married in 1953. When Bill was shipped to military duty in Korea and later Germany, he replaced his American made Corvette for his first Porsche, a 1966 911 S. After his return, he shared his love of Porsche with his wife Fran Walker, who later became club president and Club Historian. Their story is a story of shared passion that nurtured and carried the club along more so than the cold, precise machinery at the heart of the Porsche. This club is “not just about the cars, it’s the people.” As I held on for dear life, nine other racers sped around me through the west side of Transmountain Road. I came to know that the club was held together not just for the love of the engineering that kept the machinery purring at 90 mph but its members, some with tenures spanning decades. For this we shall know them well, we should know them as men, and women, of wealth and taste.

ow, I want you to close your eyes and

picture a football coach. Okay, maybe keep your eyes open, this could get a bit difficult. Picture what you think the run of the mill football coach would look like. How did you piece them together? Did you draw inspiration from a vast array of improperly fitted “team” polos tucked into sweat pants; although the coach hasn’t used their “athletic” gear for any athletic feat since what they would describe as the “golden days.” You probably also gave them a bit of padding around the mid-section, a clipboard, accompanying branded cap and supportive trainers that keep the knees feeling good all day. Take that image, shred it, burn the clippings and dispose of whatever remains—this football is the original football; here we call it soccer or fútbol. Whatever we call it, El Paso Locomotive FC Head Coach Mark Lowry calls it his next station. Chalk it up to Beatlemania and the British Invasion of the ‘60s as to why the colonies take a 27-gauge syringe of straight Anglophilia and push down on the plunger. Lowry is the epitome of the cool welldressed Brit that Americans fawn over. From headto-toe he exudes confidence and a swagger that is

As a coach it is my job to bring that next level out.” Lowry secured his first head coach position with NPSL club, Jacksonville Armada, where he spent two years. The move to the next level of the US Soccer hierarchy came by way of an opportunity with a new club here in El Paso. El Paso Locomotive FC is one of the newest expansion clubs in the USL Championship, which is considered the second tier of the professional soccer pyramid in US Soccer, with Major League Soccer holding the highest spot. The opportunity to start a new franchise as the head coach is not a moment that comes around frequently, and Lowry knew the move was the right one at the right time.

“I have really been fortunate enough to not only have worked as a coach in multiple levels, but also have had the chance to play at a highly competitive level. [Being] a young coach … has really helped me relate to my players. Being there and having done it, I have the ability to relate to them and the stress and pressure,” said the 33-year-old Lowry, who just happens to be the youngest coach in the league. You can see this statement ring true when you watch how he gels with his squad. Respect and comradery hang heavy in the air during practice. There are laughs, jabs, jokes; juxtaposed against a tenacity and ferocity of training. Anyone who has played any rung of somewhat higher-level soccer can see that Lowry is the coach they always wished they had. He is the coach and leader players remember and attribute success to.

Owners Kristal and Emiliano Marentes state it succinctly: “We want you to feel like you are walking into our home, like we have invited you to eat.” Inside the purple building, traditional Mexican woven baskets are strewn across dark blue walls. The bar—built by Emiliano and a family friend—is made with large slabs of beetle kill pine (pinewood naturally stained blue by bark beetles). Other items, like the large ceramic dinner plates from Puebla, were brought in from Mexico or the owners’ own home. The most eye-catching fixture, a large framed portrait of Emiliano Zapata, was made by a family friend. This inclination to include articles of their personal lives is essential to Elemi’s convivial atmosphere. It seemed natural when starting an enterprise of their own for Kristal and Emiliano to grow an idea around elote, to cultivate an eatery that could bridge

the gap between traditional Mexican food and modern sensibilities. When thinking of a name, Elemi was immediately agreed upon as a conjunction of Krista’s endearment for Emiliano, El Emi. Central to their message is the idea of sustainability and elote. Elemi uses Mexican-sourced corn, like Cónico Azul from Tlaxcala. Emiliano employs his

We are addicted to technology. The more plugged into things we get, the more disconnected from nature and our soul we become. It seems we live in a world of smart phones and dumb people. In the age of speed, I think nothing could be more invigorating than going slow. In the age of distraction, what could feel more luxurious than paying attention? I learned this on El Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage and spiritual quest that others have taken in Northern

I walked an average of 20 miles a day, day after day after day. Lessons and messages began appearing around every corner, and reflection became an everyday activity. In the silence of my weeks, I began to hear the clear voice inside of me. Whether it was hiking through the sun gate on top of Machu Picchu or trekking through Mount Kailash on the high Tibetan plateau, all the hikes of my life have nourished my mind, body and soul in ways I find impossible to replicate elsewhere. June, 2019 The process of AI is not a simple one. Both female ocelots were treated with oral progesterone for 30 days to suppress any ovarian activity prior to two injections (gonadotropin) to induce follicular growth and ovulation. The females were inseminated laparoscopically with the frozen semen at each of their respected zoos. Dr. Swanson conducted the insemination with the assistance of CREW Doctoral Scientist, Dr. Raquel Gonzalez, collaborating zoos’ veterinarians and their animal care teams. After 50 days, both pregnancies were confirmed. On March 1, 2019 the first kitten was born at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The next day, the El Paso Zoo’s ocelot, Lindy, gave birth to an unusually large litter of four kittens; two males and two females. One male was stillborn and one female was too weak to survive. The remaining kittens (Tica-female and Tiago-male) are thriving and continue to do well under Lindy’s care.

the most loving doggy ever! Not only is he all the things mentioned above, but he is very photogenic; I had to make him his own Instagram (lol). Through that platform we’re able to advocate for local dog rescues, as they’re always in need of donations to keep up with vet bills due to all the special cases they take on. r Wishes O

n an unusually cold morning for El Paso

more than 700 locals were seen crossing the finish

line of their one-mile walk around the beautiful Fountains of Farah. Some wore T-shirts with kids’ names on them,

others carried signs, and an extra special group donned superhero capes. Though they came in all shapes and sizes, their mission was the same—to honor local wish

kids battling critical illnesses and make wishes possible for many more eligible children. March 30th marked the fourth annual Make-A-Wish Walk for Wishes presented by Southwest University and The Hospitals of Providence. “Providence Children’s Hospital is proud to partner with Make-A-Wish. Through its premier events like the Walk For Wishes, we align our brands to push a common mission—help the children in our region who need it the most,” said Rob J. Anderson of The Hospitals of Providence. Families, volunteers and community supporters alike bundled up, and held on tight to one another, as the top sponsors and walk teams were recognized at the starting line. Wish kids were given blue capes to wear as symbols of their bravery. Several wish kids shared their stories, including how their wish experiences had helped in their medical journey. Now an adult, wish alum Miranda shared the magic of her experience all those years ago. “When I was a patient at Providence Children’s battling Leukemia, I got nominated www.thecitymagazineelp.com

93

June, 2019 to be a wish kid and it was a great moment, especially during a time filled with challenges. Wishes give patients like myself the chance to be a kid and have a fun experience where they don’t have to focus on the problems with their health. You get to create a special memory with all of the people that have been supporting you throughout your journey.” At the end of the mile, crowds were greeted with food trucks, live music, free burritos from Crave and cinnamon rolls from Cinnaholic. Games were scattered about for kids of all ages, and character princesses made time for meet and greets. Several local teams’ mascots handed out high fives and hugs. Make-A-Wish began the morning with hopes of raising $80,000. Thanks to the El Paso community, by the time the last participant crossed the finish line, that goal had been exceeded. Individuals’ stories, like Miranda’s, illustrate the power of wishes and are only further supported by medical research that is making connections between wishes and better health outcomes. When a wish is granted, a child replaces fear with confidence, sadness with joy, and anxiety with hope. With a record number of referrals, wishes are waiting. But kids battling critical illnesses need their wishes when they stand to have the greatest impact. Only with support from the community can wishes be granted. We want to thank the walkers, volunteers, sponsors, teams and supporters for giving what you can in our constant mission—to grant every eligible child their wish. Though the countdown to next year’s Walk for Wishes may have begun, there will always be a need for donations, for volunteers and for support for every child waiting patiently for that one special wish.

| By: ANDY MARTINEZ | uccessful skincare and grooming routines must respond to the kind of lifestyle that one has. Different strokes for different folks, right? That’s why, for this month, I’ve chosen four products to cater to and address specific needs depending on the kind of job you might have. All to help you look and feel your best where and when it matters.

1 Skyn Iceland | Eye Gel | For the frequent flyer Whether it’s a red-eye or a three-layover trip your assistant haphazardly booked, there’s a good chance you’re more than exhausted after you reach your destination. Do you have a presentation or board meeting to attend right after you land? Don’t let that haggard look follow you from baggage claim to the office. The under-eye area is the first to show signs of fatigue, so extra diligence is required for this sensitive area. Before you land, pop on these eye gels to minimize puffiness/hollowness. Only taking about 10 minutes for the ingredients to take effect, this is a quick pick-me-up when you don’t have the time for a full routine. The gels lock in moisture and brighten your overall appearance. Who cares if you look a little silly to the flight attendants? I’m certain they’ve seen worse.

$30 | skyniceland.com

2 Kiehl’s | Ultimate Strength Hand Salve For the hands-on artisan There really are no better tools than the human hands; after all, they built the literal foundations of society. Too deep? Not nearly as deep as this hand salve is willing to go to fix your dry and cracked hands. Hands are immensely sensitive, containing more receptor cells than most other areas of the body [particularly in the fingertips]. Don’t let your feelers fall by the wayside and compromise one of your most vital senses. Keep your hands well-hydrated and cared for. The avocado, eucalyptus and sesame seed oils in this heavy-duty salve provide layers of protection and reparative benefits to get your hands feeling smoother than ever before.

$16 | kiehls.com

3 Panasonic | Compact Single Blade Travel Shaver For the noon o’clock shadow Goldman Sachs might have turned down the dial on its dress code earlier this year, but that doesn’t mean everyone can suddenly become a sloppy desk jockey. If you’ve been blessed by the gods with an impenetrable beard density that seems to reappear as soon as you pass the blade over it, this might be the solution for you. Whether you’re just looking to clean up around the edges or are shooting for more of an uncanny valley, Henry Cavill-circa Justice League upper lip fiasco, this tiny yet powerful shaver gets the job done to make you feel presentable wherever you go. Usable when wet or dry, the device makes quick work of that stubble. Just make sure you clean up your mess, for goodness’ sake.

$34 | amazon.com

4 Supergoop | City Sunscreen Serum For the round-the-clock commuter Greasy, sticky, heavy. These are all words we associate with sunscreen, and although it is arguably one of the most important skincare products to prevent early signs of aging, it almost seems to be the least-developed in terms of appearance and comfort. Fortunately, formulas like Supergoop’s (misleading name and all) are lightweight and absorb quickly to deliver hydration and a layer of protection from the particularly harsh summer sun rays—no clogged pores or breakouts either. One application in the morning is good enough for a day on the road from meeting to meeting all around town, and is redeemable for one big fat middle finger to those UV rays. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

The Nasrids The Nasrids were the last Muslim Dynasty to rule in Spain. Their territory spanned the entire provinces in Granada, Malaga and Almeria, and parts of Jaen, Cordoba, Seville and Cadiz. rilling in the warmer weather is an experience in its own. It’s almost humbling to cook with such a primitive method. Just you and your flame. The perfect time to take over “dad-duties” and make

some beer braised brats. I have to keep this El Paso style because we just do it so well, so use bolillo buns (aka francesitos, aka French rolls) to house the mixture of braised bratwurst and soft savory peppers and onions. Find bolillos at your local Mexican bakery and get them by the dozen, they’re even better once they’ve sat on your grill for a few minutes, giving them the crusty outside and soft, warm inside. Make sure you buy raw brats, the braising method will make them super juicy and add that extra layer of flavor from the beer and veggies as it all cooks down and combines together. I do love to reiterate how easy this is to make, it’s all about the prep (mainly cutting up vegetables and choosing your favorite beer). We just have to simply sweat the veggies, boil the brats in the beer, and finish on the grill for that last remaining stretch of browning and charred texture/flavor that makes grilling.
