them. I’m often asked, “What does a woman like in a man?” Ladies are complicated and often send mixed messages (or do we really?). It is a well-known concept that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. So, as the timing of our June Men’s issue would have it, I was recently in mixed company discussing this topic, and one of my male friends asked, “What do you ladies REALLY like?” I asked a few of my girls for some considerable help with that question. Their responses were a fresh and a thoughtful look at what women like in a man today. Because good advice never goes out of style, I’ve put together a list of what attracts women to men. Here are some suggestions and things to avoid … What women find attractive about a man:

Jim Senter UTEP Director of Athletics New UTEP Director of Athletics Jim Senter came to the Sun City with a vision–Every Person Makes a Difference (#EPMAD). Senter was announced to the position on Nov. 22, 2017, after serving as the director of athletics at The Citadel for the past three years. University President Diana Natalicio says, “his previous experience at the University of Idaho, San Diego State University and the University of Colorado gives him a rich set of perspectives on the complexities of intercollegiate athletics in the 21st century.” Senter has made his way to El Paso and has worked feverishly to increase community support for UTEP Athletics. Senter brings passion, excitement and his ability to fundraise is topnotch. He’s already announced plans to upgrade Sun Bowl Stadium, with the new GECU Terrace, sky lounge, renovated press box and concourse coming soon. His busy first few months on the job have also included hiring football and men’s basketball coaches, as well as engaging various constituents with town halls across the city. Cory Herman El Paso Rhinos Head Coach Cory Herman has been a staple of hockey in El Paso since 1999 when he first arrived, while helping the Sun City embrace a sport he has immense passion for. Most recently, the El Paso Rhinos were by-and-large the most dominating club in the Western States Hockey League after posting a 49-1-1 record and claiming the WSHL Championship during a 3-2 victory over the Ogden Mustangs on April 15, 2018. It was the third Thorne Cup for the Rhinos (2008, 2014). Herman played one season with the El Paso Buzzards before he founded the El Paso Rhinos junior hockey team in 2006. Herman’s goal is to help youth hockey players achieve theirs by playing at higher levels of hockey, including the NCAA. Herman says the most important part of his job as head coach is practice. “Practice is where they learn everything,” he says. But his team’s success on the ice is not all that matters. The Rhinos are heavily involved with local charities and organizations, while also reaching out to schools all around El Paso.

Rodney Terry UTEP Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Rodney Terry was appointed the 19th head coach in UTEP men’s basketball history on March 12, 2018. Terry returns home to the Lone Star State, as the native of Angleton previously served as the head coach at Fresno State for seven years. The Bulldogs experienced tremendous success under Terry’s direction, including 20-win campaigns in four of the last five years and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2016. Terry takes over a storied basketball program and says, “I want to build on the tradition, I want to build on the history. I want to have a connection with the campus.” One of Terry’s mentors, Harry Miller–Baylor University’s head coach from 1994 to 1999–gave Terry his first opportunity in coaching. Prior to his time at Fresno State, Terry served a nine-year tenure at the University of Texas as the Longhorns produced nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four berth in 2003. Current University of Tennessee head coach and former Longhorn head man Rick Barnes says Terry, who has been part of teams that posted a combined 461 wins, is a “phenomenal hire” for UTEP.

R Od Barajas El Pas Chihuahuas Manager Rod Barajas was hired as the El Paso Chihuahuas manager on January 14, 2016. The Chihuahuas achieved instant success under his direction as El Paso won its first ever Pacific Coast League championship during his first season in 2016. The Chihuahuas followed with a PCL South Division title in 2017 before falling short in the championship series. Barajas played 14 seasons (1999-2012) as a catcher in Major League Baseball, most notably winning a World Series title with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, playing with the Texas Rangers when he hit 21 bombs with 60 RBI in 2005, while also donning Dodger Blue for a pair of seasons. After a lengthy career and catching for some of baseball’s best pitchers, Barajas managed the Padres Arizona Rookie League affiliate in 2014, while he began the

2015 season as High-A Lake Elsinore’s hitting coach and was elevated to be Double-A San Antonio’s manager at mid-season. Barajas played with the El Paso Diablos back in 1999 and was excited to make his return to the Sun City, but this time, as a manager. Jon Teicher “The Voice of the Miners”

Jon Teicher will enter his 38th season (2018-19) as the UTEP Football and Men’s Basketball radio play-by-play “Voice of the Miners.” Teicher brings personality and passion over the airwaves as his “touchdown, Miners” call gives goosebumps to anyone listening. Teicher was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in the spring of 2001 and was most recently honored in New York City in December of 2017 as a recipient of the Chris Schenkel Award, for a long and distinguished career broadcasting college football by the National Football Foundation. NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell says, “Jon Teicher has had an exceptional broadcasting career and his voice has become synonymous with UTEP football and West Texas.” When Teicher first arrived to the Sun City, he called play-by-play for the minor-league baseball Diablos from 1980 to 1984 and again from 1988 to 1992. He also broadcast professional baseball in Portland, Ore., and in Wichita, Kan. A graduate of UCLA in 1979, Teicher looked up to the likes of former Dodgers voice Vin Scully and former Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn.

Kevin Baker UTEP Women’s Basketball Head Coach Kevin Baker took over a successful UTEP women’s basketball program and continued the winning ways during the 2017-18 season. Baker directed the Miners to a 17-win season, which more than doubled their win total from a year ago, and a first-round victory in the Conference USA Championships in Frisco, Texas. Baker was appointed as the eighth head coach in women’s basketball history on April 24, 2017 after posting 50 wins in two seasons at Angelo State University (2015-17). The Lufkin, Texas, native also saw success at UT-Tyler for three seasons (2012-15) that included a pair of 27-win campaigns during Baker’s final two years. Baker led both a Division II (Angelo State) and Division III (UT-Tyler) school to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Dana Dimel UTEP Football Head Coach Dana Dimel was announced as the 26th head coach in UTEP football history on Dec. 6, 2017. Dimel brings a wealth of NCAA Division I football experience with over 30 years of coaching. Dimel was the head coach at the University of Wyoming (1997-99) and the University of Houston (2000-02), while serving as associate head coach at the University of Arizona (200708). Most recently, Dimel was the co-offensive coordinator at Kansas State University (201117). On his coaching philosophy, Dimel says “you’re trying to be as efficient as you can, score a lot of points and have an exciting brand of football.” With Dimel calling plays over the last seven seasons, KSU averaged 33.4 points per game with five nine-win seasons. Dimel assembled a coaching staff that has played or coached at Power Five schools, including new offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Mike Cox. The buzz is out on Dimel and the new era of UTEP football, as he’s already compiled an impressive recruiting class to make a difference during the upcoming 2018 campaign.

Mika Laaksonen UTEP Track & Field Head Coach Mika Laaksonen is currently in his eighth season at the helm for the UTEP Track & Field program. Laaksonen served 12 years as an assistant under legendary USTFCCCA Hall of Fame coach Bob Kitchens. Laaksonen took over a program that saw 143 outdoor AllAmericans, 73 indoor All-Americans and 15 cross country All-Americans under Kitchens’ direction. The winning ways have continued as UTEP star athlete Michael Saruni broke an NCAA record in the 800m after clocking a time of 1:43.25 in Tucson, Ariz., on April 29, 2018. Laaksonen, who was a former UTEP student-athlete and 1992 NCAA hammer champion, has directed the program to a multitude of success that includes the women’s track and field team claiming both the indoor and outdoor Conference USA title in 2017, while also being honored as both the indoor and outdoor Coach of the Year. In fact, Laaksonen has been named the C-USA Indoor Coach of the Year five times following his 2017 recognition. For the UTEP women, it was their third consecutive C-USA Indoor Championship title. In 2013, the men’s side won the C-USA Outdoor title, their first since 2008.

Christian Nassri Photography The City Magazine’s Best of The City “Best Photographer” of 2017, Christian Nassri, is making his mark not only in El Paso and Juárez, he’s honed his craft as far and wide as New York City, Miami, Dallas and even Spain, to name just a few. Although he specializes in weddings, his photography spans everything from engagements and anniversaries, family and children’s portraits, to architecture, gastronomy and fine art. A native of Juárez, Christian always loved photography and got his official start in 2006, soon becoming highly sought out for his stunning works. Interestingly, his background is in industrial systems engineering and he worked for Laboratorios de Ciencias Forenses, Gobierno del Estado de Chihuahua (a forensic science laboratory in Chihuahua, M.X.) as a ballistic forensics expert. Last May, the photog resigned from his government job to pursue a full-time career in photography, a move that this year’s Best of The City 2017 proved worthwhile. Today, Christian enjoys being in high demand for his photography and hopes to eventually showcase his work in galleries and museums, and also looks to someday teach photography. With respect to this year’s recognition as our city’s “Best Photographer,” the humble cameraman says he’s thankful to all his Juárez and El Paso voters, and those who voted for him from as far as Spain. June, 2018 fter building a name for himself at home, El Paso’s country singer-songwriter Joe Barron, is making his mark in the renowned Music City of Nashville, Tennessee. With an everexpanding network of talented fellow musicians and a deal with a major streaming network, Barron’s presence is about to be felt all over. Barron’s musical memories stretch all the way back to his childhood and his grandfather, who is still a musician today, filling family gatherings and parties with the strum of his guitar. By three or four years old, he said, he’d become “obsessed” with his parents’ George Strait records and the movie “Pure Country,” both of which he credits for turning him on to country music. Though he retained a love for country music growing up, Barron developed an appreciation for R&B and rock. Soon, a college road trip exposed Barron for the first time to Texas country as he traversed the same red-dirt roads as the Texas country troubadours that came before—but his own entry in the scene was still to come. A two- and sometimes three-sport athlete through high school and into college, Barron’s days on the field were ended prematurely after, almost like a country song, a bull-riding accident left him with a torn meniscus, two crutches and an inordinate amount of free time. So he decided to learn to play the guitar and sing. Slowly but surely, Barron found his voice, and two years after his injury and his decision to start making music, he took his project out of the garage, pulling together a full band—Isaac Almodovar on drums, Marcos Molinar on bass and Mark Ramos on electric guitar—and taking any opportunity that came his way to perform. Soon, he said, “it started to snowball.” Over the years, Barron has honed a sound all his own, fusing his classic country roots with the rock and R&B of his adolescence, bringing together the red dirt country of his college years with the pop sensibilities of today’s Nashville country. “I went to Texas State (in San Marcos) for school, where there’s a big Texas country scene, and I fell in love www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Lately, Barron said, he’s hard at work, holed up in a Nashville studio “just writing and writing, concentrating on writing the best songs I can, and either get them cut by a big artist or put together a nice portfolio and maybe get a record deal or publishing deal.” “Just last week I was hanging out with Jason Aldean and Charles Kelley (of Lady Antebellum),” he said. “It’s weird. Hanging out with Jason Aldean is something I never in a million years thought would

How to Avoid Being Placed in the

There are many men who are or have been placed in what is known as “the friend zone.” Urban dictionary defines this situation as: A situation in which a male inadvertently becomes a ‘platonic friend’ of a female who he is trying to initiate a romantic relationship with. In other words, you thought you were getting close to scoring your crush’s heart, but in reality, you took a few detours along the way and now you guys are just friends. Unfortunately getting out of the friend category can be a difficult task that most men can’t break free from. While I can’t necessarily say I will get you out of the friend zone, I can at least give you some techniques that may help you from falling back into the friend zone in the future.

1. Coming to Your Senses First things first. Realizing you have a problem is the first step to recovery. It’s time you start thinking of what you have been doing up to now and for you to start taking a different approach. What you’re doing is obviously not working or else you would be romantically involved already, right?

2. Define How Your Friend Sees You Identifying how your friend sees you is crucial. Do they see you as a brother, a parent, or a go-to therapist? If this is the case, then you’ve got an uphill climb. Look at yourself from your friend’s perspective and try to figure out what role you are playing in their life. Changing the role you have been playing will allow you to climb out of the friend zone hole once and for all.

3. Confess Your Feelings A big part of getting out of the friend zone is by letting your friend know how you really feel about them. However, there are good ways to do this and definitely bad ones. Make sure your confession is done in person in a quiet and private place. You must be thinking, “it’s okay, I’ll just have a drink to curb my nerves before I confess.” In fact, that’s never a good idea. It’s very important that you and your friend are in a clear and sober state of mind. A wrong time to reveal your emotions would be while you’re drinking, on the phone, or sitting in front of a computer screen.

4. Allow Your Friend to Miss You I know what you’re thinking, “out of sight, out of mind.” There’s no need to be afraid and think of worst case scenarios. Just think about it this way, the more you’re out of the picture, the more your friend will be thinking of you. Creating a separation, forces your friend to realize what life is like without you and to stop taking you for granted. “The Separation” is the most important stage of getting out of the friend zone. If you don’t give them a chance to miss you, they never, ever will.

5. Stay Busy Having a life of your own aside from spending time with your friend is important. It not only shows your friend that you don’t need her on the daily, it also shows that you can be independent without relying on her. The minute you make yourself less available is the minute their curiosity starts to peak.

6. Changing Up Your Look Changing the way you look will make her wonder what else you’re capable of. When changing up your look don’t consult your friend for their opinion, just do it. People like surprises. It’s exciting. Plus, this will keep her wondering what else is new with you.

of Providence. On Saturday, April 28, the sun was shining, the traditional spring winds in the city had seized and there were smiling faces across the promenade as close to 1,000 people made their way around the beautiful grounds of the Fountains at Farah in east El Paso for a nearly 1-mile leisurely walk, all to benefit Make-A-Wish. This walk was a platform for people to showcase their support for the organization and also allowed them to walk side-by-side with wish kids and their families, many of whom are still fighting their critical illnesses.

This event focuses on encouraging the community to help protect this species and their habitats. This campaign is a proactive and positive way to shed light on the crisis that these large apes, as an endangered species, face. In speaking to the orangutan keepers, Zoo Collections Supervisor Griselda expressed the importance of this event with me in saying, “The international M.O.M. event brings awareness to the public of how important orangutan mothers are for the survival of the species. Every day, orangutan mothers go missing due to poaching, black market pet trade and palm oil farms that encroach on their living space. In turn, most of the baby orangutans end up orphaned and in the hands of the black market pet trade, weak, lost and/or starved to death. This event means a lot to us and we contribute by holding this event yearly on Mother’s Day and donating to credible orangutan sanctuaries.”

Let your steaks sit for 10 minutes after cooking to ensure juiciness in every bite. 2 NY Strips, 1-½ inch

anta Maria style BBQ is a California classic that can easily take credit for launching the development of food scenes across the state. Of course, classic and traditional recipes have a time and place and today

is not that time, nor that place. Today is Father’s Day, and I want to step it up, my dad does a lot for me and I want to try something special for him. So I’m going to take the base elements of a Santa Maria rub and apply it to a NY Strip. I want a thick cut of meat that will take the high heat and stay juicy and pink in the center. I want that high heat with open flames so I can create a char and crust from the Santa Maria rub. The rub is filled with strong flavors that will complement each other; nonetheless, they are strong flavors. It’s best to serve this with a tangy and fresh salad to cut through the heaviness. Go the Greek salad route, the cucumbers, olives, red onion, and tomato will be the perfect side to a steak dinner.

Reheat grill on high heat with lid closed for 15-20 minutes.

At a dinner party, your hosts may offer mixed drinks before dinner. When dinner is served however, do not carry your hard liquor to the table or consume it during the meal. Wine will normally be served with your meal. White wine is customarily served with chicken or white fish. Red wine is served with red meat or red fish such as salmon or tuna. Champagne may be served with dessert. If you do not wish to drink what is being served, put your hand over the glass and say “No thank you.” Feel free to ask for a non-alcoholic beverage.
