“If a man expects a woman to be an angel in his life, he must first create heaven for her. Angels don’t live in hell.”

en, we love them. We love them in suits, we love them in jeans, we love them in uniforms. We just love

them. I’m often asked, “What does a woman like in a man?” Ladies are complicated and often send mixed messages (or do we really?). It is a well-known concept that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. So, as the timing of our June Men’s issue would have it, I was recently in mixed company discussing this topic, and one of my male friends asked, “What do you ladies REALLY like?” I asked a few of my girls for some considerable help with that question. Their responses were a fresh and a thoughtful look at what women like in a man today. Because good advice never goes out of style, I’ve put together a list of what attracts women to men. Here are some suggestions and things to avoid … What women find attractive about a man:

What turns a woman off:

1.

A snappy dresser, good grooming and looking good no matter

The endeavor called upon the expertise of “an A-class team of specialized national architects” in rehabilitating the roughly 88-year-old, Art Deco landmark building designed by El Paso’s own renowned architect, Henry Trost. The motivation for this particular restoration is what Lane describes as “finding value where others overlook it,” an apparent “recurring theme” that the entrepreneur says he’s come across throughout the course of his projects. the landmark building. Jim Senter UTEP Director of Athletics New UTEP Director of Athletics Jim Senter came to the Sun City with a vision–Every Person Makes a Difference (#EPMAD). Senter was announced to the position on Nov. 22, 2017, after serving as the director of athletics at The Citadel for the past three years. University President Diana Natalicio says, “his previous experience at the University of Idaho, San Diego State University and the University of Colorado gives him a rich set of perspectives on the complexities of intercollegiate athletics in the 21st century.” Senter has made his way to El Paso and has worked feverishly to increase community support for UTEP Athletics. Senter brings passion, excitement and his ability to fundraise is topnotch. He’s already announced plans to upgrade Sun Bowl Stadium, with the new GECU Terrace, sky lounge, renovated press box and concourse coming soon. His busy first few months on the job have also included hiring football and men’s basketball coaches, as well as engaging various constituents with town halls across the city. Senter says, “I am really honored to be here and be named athletic director of UTEP. I am humbled by it.”

Cory Herman El Paso Rhinos Head Coach Cory Herman has been a staple of hockey in El Paso since 1999 when he first arrived, while helping the Sun City embrace a sport he has immense passion for. Most recently, the El Paso Rhinos were by-and-large the most dominating club in the Western States Hockey League after posting a 49-1-1 record and claiming the WSHL Championship during a 3-2 victory over the Ogden Mustangs on April 15, 2018. It was the third Thorne Cup for the Rhinos (2008, 2014). Herman played one season with the El Paso Buzzards before he founded the El Paso Rhinos junior hockey team in 2006. Herman’s goal is to help youth hockey players achieve theirs by playing at higher levels of hockey, including the NCAA. Herman says the most important part of his job as head coach is practice. “Practice is where they learn everything,” he says. But his team’s success on the ice is not all that matters. The Rhinos are heavily involved with local charities and organizations, while also reaching out to schools all around El Paso.

Rodney Terry was appointed the 19th head coach in UTEP men’s basketball history on March 12, 2018. Terry returns home to the Lone Star State, as the native of Angleton previously served as the head coach at Fresno State for seven years. The Bulldogs experienced tremendous success under Terry’s direction, including 20-win campaigns in four of the last five years and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2016. Terry takes over a storied basketball program and says, “I want to build on the tradition, I want to build on the history. I want to have a connection with the campus.” One of Terry’s mentors, Harry Miller–Baylor University’s head coach from 1994 to 1999–gave Terry his first opportunity in coaching. Prior to his time at Fresno State, Terry served a nine-year tenure at the University of Texas as the Longhorns produced nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four berth in 2003. Current University of Tennessee head coach and former Longhorn head man Rick Barnes says Terry, who has been part of teams that posted a combined 461 wins, is a “phenomenal hire” for UTEP.

R Od Barajas El Pas Chihuahuas Manager Rod Barajas was hired as the El Paso Chihuahuas manager on January 14, 2016. The Chihuahuas achieved instant success under his direction as El Paso won its first ever Pacific Coast League championship during his first season in 2016. The Chihuahuas followed with a PCL South Division title in 2017 before falling short in the championship series. Barajas played 14 seasons (1999-2012) as a catcher in Major League Baseball, most notably winning a World Series title with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, playing with the Texas Rangers when he hit 21 bombs with 60 RBI in 2005, while also donning Dodger Blue for a pair of seasons. After a lengthy career and catching for some of baseball’s best pitchers, Barajas managed the Padres Arizona Rookie League affiliate in 2014, while he began the

2015 season as High-A Lake Elsinore’s hitting coach and was elevated to be Double-A San Antonio’s manager at mid-season. Barajas played with the El Paso Diablos back in 1999 and was excited to make his return to the Sun City, but this time, as a manager. Barajas says he loves El Paso, the community and that it’s a great place to manage and play.

Jon Teicher “The Voice of the Miners”

Jon Teicher will enter his 38th season (2018-19) as the UTEP Football and Men’s Basketball radio play-by-play “Voice of the Miners.” Teicher brings personality and passion over the airwaves as his “touchdown, Miners” call gives goosebumps to anyone listening. Teicher was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in the spring of 2001 and was most recently honored in New York City in December of 2017 as a recipient of the Chris Schenkel Award, for a long and distinguished career broadcasting college football by the National Football Foundation. NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell says, “Jon Teicher has had an exceptional broadcasting career and his voice has become synonymous with UTEP football and West Texas.” When Teicher first arrived to the Sun City, he called play-by-play for the minor-league baseball Diablos from 1980 to 1984 and again from 1988 to 1992. He also broadcast professional baseball in Portland, Ore., and in Wichita, Kan. A graduate of UCLA in 1979, Teicher looked up to the likes of former Dodgers voice Vin Scully and former Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn.

Kevin Baker UTEP Women’s Basketball Head Coach Kevin Baker took over a successful UTEP women’s basketball program and continued the winning ways during the 2017-18 season. Baker directed the Miners to a 17-win season, which more than doubled their win total from a year ago, and a first-round victory in the Conference USA Championships in Frisco, Texas. Baker was appointed as the eighth head coach in women’s basketball history on April 24, 2017 after posting 50 wins in two seasons at Angelo State University (2015-17). The Lufkin, Texas, native also saw success at UT-Tyler for three seasons (2012-15) that included a pair of 27-win campaigns during Baker’s final two years. Baker led both a Division II (Angelo State) and Division III (UT-Tyler) school to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Baker brought an exciting brand of basketball as his offensive style is pressing, getting up and down, and shooting a lot of threes. Baker’s UTEP squad displayed www.thecitymagazineelp.com

mental toughness as the team finished with seven wins in games decided by five points or less, which were the most such victories during a season in program history. Overall, Baker has chalked up 361 victories as a head coach, including 10 seasons as a high school head coach.

Dana Dimel UTEP Football Head Coach Dana Dimel was announced as the 26th head coach in UTEP football history on Dec. 6, 2017. Dimel brings a wealth of NCAA Division I football experience with over 30 years of coaching. Dimel was the head coach at the University of Wyoming (1997-99) and the University of Houston (2000-02), while serving as associate head coach at the University of Arizona (200708). Most recently, Dimel was the co-offensive coordinator at Kansas State University (201117). On his coaching philosophy, Dimel says “you’re trying to be as efficient as you can, score a lot of points and have an exciting brand of football.” With Dimel calling plays over the last seven seasons, KSU averaged 33.4 points per game with five nine-win seasons. Dimel assembled a coaching staff that has played or coached at Power Five schools, including new offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Mike Cox. The buzz is out on Dimel and the new era of UTEP football, as he’s already compiled an impressive recruiting class to make a difference during the upcoming 2018 campaign.

Mika Laaksonen UTEP Track & Field Head Coach Mika Laaksonen is currently in his eighth season at the helm for the UTEP Track & Field program. Laaksonen served 12 years as an assistant under legendary USTFCCCA Hall of Fame coach Bob Kitchens. Laaksonen took over a program that saw 143 outdoor AllAmericans, 73 indoor All-Americans and 15 cross country All-Americans under Kitchens’ direction. The winning ways have continued as UTEP star athlete Michael Saruni broke an NCAA record in the 800m after clocking a time of 1:43.25 in Tucson, Ariz., on April 29, 2018. Laaksonen, who was a former UTEP student-athlete and 1992 NCAA hammer champion, has directed the program to a multitude of success that includes the women’s track and field team claiming both the indoor and outdoor Conference USA title in 2017, while also being honored as both the indoor and outdoor Coach of the Year. In fact, Laaksonen has been named the C-USA Indoor Coach of the Year five times following his 2017 recognition. For the UTEP women, it was their third consecutive C-USA Indoor Championship title. In 2013, the men’s side won the C-USA Outdoor title, their first since 2008.

June, 2018 Through various processes like manufacturing, shipping and shelf life, the benefits of vitamins, minerals and probiotics are diminished or destroyed, so it was Travis’s goal to reinstate the nutrients back into the dog food in order to give customers the full value of the purchase. “We have developed a system where we can customize a bag of dog food specifically for each individual dog. Because they are all different, there are different nutrient requirements and combinations that we can do with our patented machine and we can do that in 60 seconds.” The machine, which Travis initially proposed to his team through an assemblage of tools and a popcorn maker, is now present at Pet’s Barn stores and customizes dog food for all customers who purchase dog food from their Activa line, allowing up to 55,000 combinations of enrichments, oils and flavors. “There are days where we are up to 600-700 bags in a day, the system works,” says Travis. The constant strive for the betterment and growth of the company, with the customer and their needs always at the forefront, is what has ensured security for Travis, his company and employees. As for advice to aspiring business owners, Travis wisely comments,

Justin Underwood & Dereck Wyatt The prosperous firm of Wyatt Underwood was formed in 2004 by Dereck Wyatt and Justin Underwood. After working together at the El Paso County District Attorney’s office, the men decided to branch out, Dereck being the infantryman in that charge, with Justin soon following. They have grown from their original compact office in the Basset Tower to a residence of ample size; needed to handle the volume and gravity of cases they handle on a daily basis. A specialization in criminal cases has led the men to countless victories and has elevated them to be the experts in their fields. Justin Underwood focuses on DWI cases and Dereck Wyatt has an emphasis on drug related cases. Very often, their expert knowledge is called upon by local and national law enforcement agencies, students, and anyone who needs to have a thorough understanding of the law and their rights. Wyatt and Underwood both boast an impressive track record and a winning mindset. The past few years alone, both men have received not guilty verdicts for clients in some of the region’s most high-profile cases; including a not guilty in a case with a false/forced confession. The accolades are endless for the firm, but for the two men it’s not about awards, it’s all about serving the community with the legal counsel they deserve.

This inspiring practice sparked these men with the aromatic scents of their favorite cigars. Enter El Paso’s hidden gem by the ballpark, Vitola’s Whiskey and Cigar Bar. Owner, Fernando Gandara, (born and raised in El Paso and a graduate of El Paso High School) was born with a hearing disability that made it difficult for him to socialize. That is what drew him to a business that was intimate, with much more conversation and face-to-face interaction. “I value few things more than meaningful conversation. I see every single conversation as an opportunity to learn something new,” he states. Vitola’s Whiskey and Cigar Bar is a convivial, peaceful place where premium natural cigar smoking can facilitate an unwinding effect and can strengthen new or existing bonds. The cigar community is growing and Vitola’s offers an environment that is warm and friendly—no one is a stranger. It is the local hub for relaxation and a meeting of the minds. Vitola’s is an incredibly refreshing experience to engage in from time to time. My philosophy is to live with moderation in life and indulge in moments of celebration … a new birth, job promotion, marriage … in completely new and different surroundings. For those moments, this comfortable lounge will leave a very long and lasting impression. “Quality over quantity! Drink less, drink better!” Fernando exclaims. “Premium, natural cigars don’t have to be a vice,” Fernando says, “they should be approached as a treat or a victory celebration.” According to Fernando, sometimes smoking the right cigar in

Stepping out of ordinary life and embracing a moment in time where you are able to treat yourself to fine tobacco and whiskey in a plush living room atmosphere that does not promote over-consumption. There is nothing snobbish or elitist about smoking fine cigars in this venue. Its welcoming setting and comfortable surroundings entice all to indulge. Maximize Your S Abundance at Work with Feng Shui

ummer is the perfect time for an office feng shui overhaul! Feng shui is an ancient Chinese system, dating back approximately 4,000 years, that helps organize your life to promote the balance and flow of energy that moves through your home and your

office. It’s not just Chinese wisdom; it’s universal common sense. It’s not a belief system, a religion, superstition or magic. You don’t need to believe in it in order for it to work. It’s not about changing your luck but it is about creating a space that promotes a feeling of balance, well-being and happiness. Feng shui works through the interconnections between matter and energy. Everything is connected. When you live and work in a space that feels good to you, your attitude becomes more positive and the quality of your life and your work improves. In order to have an optimal life, you must have optimal surroundings.

recommended envisioning yourself in a white light bubble. See yourself inside this bubble from head to toe until you are physically feeling protected by the white light. You may also call upon your guardian angels and/or loved ones who’ve passed to protect you. St. Michael is also great to call upon for reinforcement as he’s known for safeguarding us. Daily meditation or prayer are also beneficial. Other methods to deflect psychic energy can be done more easily. While it may seem contradictory, try wearing the color black if you are in an unhappy environment as the color black will deflect the “dark” energy of the psychic attack. Wearing jewelry or crystals that are black such as obsidian, tourmaline, or hematite are great shields for your aura. If this happens in your residence you can also burn some sage or incense to clear the space. Open windows to let in light or ntipathy is defined as a deep state of dislike or aversion

towards another. At some point in our lives we will all likely express it or experience it on the receiving end. One form of this ill-will can be easily represented in a lesser known idea called psychic attack. Psychic attacks most commonly emanate from our fellow humans that are cruel, envious

of us, or wish harm onto others. Unfortunately, whether or not people outwardly express these feelings or not, psychic attack is still happening as the negative energy is being felt by another.

go outside and get some sunshine. Once the energy is cleared and you are no longer under psychic attack you will feel uplifted, happy, vital and at peace. Remember you get what you give so when someone wishes negativity to others, things will go wrong for them. Karmic law states you get what you give multiplied. Wish them love, peace and most of all, happiness. www.GracethePsychicLady.com

The most common of the psychic attacks is gossip and likened to the common cold as it’s highly contagious and spreads quickly. Most gossip is caused by an underlying sense of envy. We may feel the need to gossip about Jane’s marriage because we have faults in our own. Whether it’s jealousy of a career, relationship, or material possessions, we should never allow envy to infect us and encourage gossip about others as once the words are spoken or thought, the psychic attack has begun. Physical symptoms you may have when under psychic attack can include: fatigue, headaches, trouble concentrating, cold sensation, back pain, depression, anxiety and gastrointestinal issues. One way to find out if someone may be sending a psychic attack towards you is by paying attention to how you feel when you’re around them. For example, you walk into a room and someone glares at you intensely and you feel a chill run up your spine, this person is attacking you on a psychic level. The easiest way to protect yourself is to get away from the person(s) as quickly as possible. If this is not an option, it is www.thecitymagazineelp.com

FASTING YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH | By: DR. DAVID WARDY |

The concept and practice of fasting is nothing new. Fasting is a dietary approach that we see historically and archeologically all over the world. This ancient healing strategy has been talked about for thousands of years and practiced since the times of Hippocrates, as spiritual fasting is part of many religious practices worldwide. Why are we barely tapping into this amazing healing strategy? Simply put, what we have had indoctrinated into us as a healthy diet and eating habits is so far astray from this approach that as a country we are chronically inflamed. This inflammation leads to immune disorders, hormone dysfunction, weight loss resistance, thyroid disease, and cancer. Fasting is a highly effective tool to incorporate in your daily lifestyle to maximize your body’s innate healing abilities. Many people think of fasting as starving yourself which of course is not the case. Fasting occurs when we abstain from food and drink for a specific period of time. This disruption of our eating patterns enables us to express health through adaptation. Our bodies are much smarter than we give them credit for and when given the opportunity we can activate this innate healing ability to maximize the expression of the perfection within. Benefits of Fasting: 1. Autophagy (self eating)-is how the body naturally removes cellular debris. The body eats bad cells and proteins. 2. Weight Loss—can jumpstart weight loss and aid as a dietary strategy to get fat adapted for a ketogenic diet. 3. Can Reboot the Immune System—Stem cell regeneration of immune cells is seen after five days of a block fast. 4. Reduces Cellular Inflammation 5. Improves Hormone Sensitivity and Increase Growth Hormone/Testosterone levels 6. Helps Athletes—has positive effects on body mass, endurance, and other health markers. 7. Normalizes Ghrelin Levels—reduces this hunger hormone. 8. Normalizes Leptin Levels—which help inhibit hunger and improve energy. 9. Lowers Triglyceride Levels—lowers bad cholesterol levels 10. Anti-Aging—eating less increases life expectancy Depending on what benefit you are trying to achieve determines which type of fasting strategy you can implement into your lifestyle. Each has its benefits and if used properly can make massive changes in your overall health. Types of Fasting: Intermittent-“Cyclic Fasting” range from 16-18 hours Partial-Limited and strategic caloric intake, involves macronutrient ratio of low protein, low carbs, and high fat Block-4-10 days consuming only water/bonebroth Alternate Day-Limited caloric intake on fasting days (about 25% of normal intake) and eating to stomach content on non-fasting days 24 Hour-Fasting for a full 24 hour period (i.e. dinner to dinner) You’re not eating less, you’re eating less often. Remember that fasting is not starvation, nor deprivation. When you do eat be sure to eat delicious healthy nutritious whole foods until your’re satisfied. Be well! **Disclaimer** Although the health benefits of fasting are very appealing, fasting isn’t for everyone. If you are on certain medications or have a health condition, it’s best to consult a doctor about introducing fasting into your lifestyle. However, for most of the population, intermittent fasting can be a really helpful tool in managing your weight and health.

Dr. Wardy practices with his wife Clarissa in Westside El Paso and also coaches clients virtually. Dr. Wardy is 1 of 60 doctors who is a Cellular Healing Specialist. He has over 10 years of experience in his functional approach to spinal correction, nutrition, and cellular detoxification. The Wardy Wellness approach is to teach and empower their clients and patients with the knowledge to continue their healing journey.

YOU START OFF BY MAKING AMAZING PROGRESS. THE WEIGHT WAS COMING OFF, YOUR CLOTHING SIZE WAS GOING DOWN. THEN OUT OF NOWHERE YOUR PROGRESS TAKES AN ABRUPT HALT. NOTHING IS MOVING. YOU’VE HIT THE PLATEAU. This happens to a lot of us and it is best to figure out why you hit this plateau and then figure out how you can get off of it. One reason you may have hit a plateau is that you were not eating enough to start with. Since your body doesn’t know the difference between starvation and dieting, sometimes your body will start to store fat because it goes into starvation mode. If you’re trying to lose weight it’s best to slowly cut your calories. If you start too low in caloric intake, you’ll have

Artist Spotlight

June, 2018 fter building a name for himself at home, El Paso’s country singer-songwriter Joe Barron, is making his mark in the renowned Music City of Nashville, Tennessee. With an everexpanding network of talented fellow musicians and a deal with a major streaming network, Barron’s presence is about to be felt all over. Barron’s musical memories stretch all the way back to his childhood and his grandfather, who is still a musician today, filling family gatherings and parties with the strum of his guitar. By three or four years old, he said, he’d become “obsessed” with his parents’ George Strait records and the movie “Pure Country,” both of which he credits for turning him on to country music. Though he retained a love for country music growing up, Barron developed an appreciation for R&B and rock. Soon, a college road trip exposed Barron for the first time to Texas country as he traversed the same red-dirt roads as the Texas country troubadours that came before—but his own entry in the scene was still to come. A two- and sometimes three-sport athlete through high school and into college, Barron’s days on the field were ended prematurely after, almost like a country song, a bull-riding accident left him with a torn meniscus, two crutches and an inordinate amount of free time. So he decided to learn to play the guitar and sing. Slowly but surely, Barron found his voice, and two years after his injury and his decision to start making music, he took his project out of the garage, pulling together a full band—Isaac Almodovar on drums, Marcos Molinar on bass and Mark Ramos on electric guitar—and taking any opportunity that came his way to perform. Soon, he said, “it started to snowball.” Over the years, Barron has honed a sound all his own, fusing his classic country roots with the rock and R&B of his adolescence, bringing together the red dirt country of his college years with the pop sensibilities of today’s Nashville country. “I went to Texas State (in San Marcos) for school, where there’s a big Texas country scene, and I fell in love www.thecitymagazineelp.com

with that scene and circuit,” Barron said. “Over the years, though, my sound progressed, and I started following a lot more of the mainstream guys coming out of Nashville. I changed my style and found my sound a little bit. I fell in love with what is going on in Nashville right now and felt like I needed to be here.” So far, the move to Music City has been a boon. A few months after making his way to Nashville, Barron landed a six-day-a-week residency at the world-famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. After a year and a half at Tootsie’s, Barron felt it time for another change and has since taken up a spot of Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row, considered by many to be the No. 1 spot on Broadway today. Lately, Barron said, he’s hard at work, holed up in a Nashville studio “just writing and writing, concentrating on writing the best songs I can, and either get them cut by a big artist or put together a nice portfolio and maybe get a record deal or publishing deal.” “Just last week I was hanging out with Jason Aldean and Charles Kelley (of Lady Antebellum),” he said. “It’s weird. Hanging out with Jason Aldean is something I never in a million years thought would

June, 2018 happen. Six years ago, I was in nosebleed seats at one of his shows in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and now here we are taking a shot of Patrón.” Tequila shots with an idol is nothing to scoff at, but Barron notes that’s “just about any night in Nashville—you see celebrities all the time. At any different show, you could meet one of your heroes.” Since making music his full-time gig, Joe’s shared the stage with some of the biggest names in Texas country and beyond— Brantley Gilbert, Josh Abbott Band, Kenny Rogers, Dwight Yoakam and Cory Morrow to name a few. One “insane” standout in Joe’s mind is his 2016 performance with Tyler Farr for more than 10,000 people at Fort Bliss’ Let Freedom Sing Summer Concert Series; just ahead is a hometown opening gig with Craig Campbell on June 16 at El Paso County Coliseum. However, Barron’s biggest moment in music to date came not on stage, but on the small screen, as streaming giant Netflix recently acquired two of his songs for its hit comedy “The Ranch.” Both tracks are currently available

Though Barron has made Nashville his home for now, there’s something undeniably special about playing hometown shows after being away. “I do love it here, and it’s opened up so many more doors, but at the same time, I love going back to El Paso because, where it used to be me playing every day and people getting tired of hearing me, now I go back once or twice every few months and it’s a fresh crowd,” he said.

How to Avoid Being Placed in the

Friend Zone | By: JANNET BUSTILLOS |

88

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

There are many men who are or have been placed in what is known as “the friend zone.” Urban dictionary defines this situation as: A situation in which a male inadvertently becomes a ‘platonic friend’ of a female who he is trying to initiate a romantic relationship with. In other words, you thought you were getting close to scoring your crush’s heart, but in reality, you took a few detours along the way and now you guys are just friends. Unfortunately getting out of the friend category can be a difficult task that most men can’t break free from. While I can’t necessarily say I will get you out of the friend zone, I can at least give you some techniques that may help you from falling back into the friend zone in the future.

love

1. Coming to Your Senses First things first. Realizing you have a problem is the first step to recovery. It’s time you start thinking of what you have been doing up to now and for you to start taking a different approach. What you’re doing is obviously not working or else you would be romantically involved already, right?

2. Define How Your Friend Sees You Identifying how your friend sees you is crucial. Do they see you as a brother, a parent, or a go-to therapist? If this is the case, then you’ve got an uphill climb. Look at yourself from your friend’s perspective and try to figure out what role you are playing in their life. Changing the role you have been playing will allow you to climb out of the friend zone hole once and for all.

3. Confess Your Feelings A big part of getting out of the friend zone is by letting your friend know how you really feel about them. However, there are good ways to do this and definitely bad ones. Make sure your confession is done in person in a quiet and private place. You must be thinking, “it’s okay, I’ll just have a drink to curb my nerves before I confess.” In fact, that’s never a good idea. It’s very important that you and your friend are in a clear and sober state of mind. A wrong time to reveal your emotions would be while you’re drinking, on the phone, or sitting in front of a computer screen.

4. Allow Your Friend to Miss You I know what you’re thinking, “out of sight, out of mind.” There’s no need to be afraid and think of worst case scenarios. Just think about it this way, the more you’re out of the picture, the more your friend will be thinking of you. Creating a separation, forces your friend to realize what life is like without you and to stop taking you for granted. “The Separation” is the most important stage of getting out of the friend zone. If you don’t give them a chance to miss you, they never, ever will.

5. Stay Busy Having a life of your own aside from spending time with your friend is important. It not only shows your friend that you don’t need her on the daily, it also shows that you can be independent without relying on her. The minute you make yourself less available is the minute their curiosity starts to peak.

6. Changing Up Your Look Changing the way you look will make her wonder what else you’re capable of. When changing up your look don’t consult your friend for their opinion, just do it. People like surprises. It’s exciting. Plus, this will keep her wondering what else is new with you.

Walk for Wishes Provides Wishes for 20 Local Kids | By: ROSE LUCERO photography by: RAUL MARTINEZ |

l Paso could not have asked for a more perfect day to host the Third Annual Walk for WishesÂŽ presented by the Hospitals

of Providence. On Saturday, April 28, the sun was shining, the traditional spring winds in the city had seized and there were smiling faces across the promenade as close to 1,000 people made their way around the beautiful grounds of the Fountains at Farah in east El Paso for a nearly 1-mile leisurely walk, all to benefit Make-A-Wish. This walk was a platform for people to showcase their support for the organization and also allowed them to walk side-by-side with wish kids and their families, many of whom are still fighting their critical illnesses.

June, 2018 This signature walk for Make-A-Wish is considered the largest public community fundraiser. This year, the organization raised over $100,000 to help fund the organization’s mission to grant life-changing wishes to children between the ages of 2-18 who are battling critical illnesses. This year’s efforts doubled from last year in both attendees and money raised, enough to grant wishes for 20

children from the El Paso area. The event was also supported by various volunteer groups including church groups, corporate groups and school groups that helped execute some of the most pivotal elements of the event. Walk attendees also had the opportunity to partake in the Wish Zone, sponsored by Popular Mattress, that highlighted over 10 previously granted wishes. There were also

hands-on activities for kids such as “I wish to be a fireman…” or “I wish to be an artist…” If that wasn’t enough excitement, the event stage was filled with entertainment of all kinds, including the El Paso Youth Opera, Ballet Folklorico, area singers and other performances that kept attendees of all ages dancing and active on their feet. Make-A-Wish also focused on integrating their mission into Walk For Wishes as well. This was highlighted by a wish reveal for 13-yearold Rubi who is headed to Hawaii with her family this summer. Rubi was also surprised with luggage courtesy of Walmart. Make-AWish also recognized the top three fundraising teams for the event. They included top finisher Kemarah’s

second place Schneider-Electric ($3,160) and third place Casa Auto Group ($2,759). The Casa Auto Group was also recognized as the largest team with 73 participants. Despite the outpouring of support from our community and success that Walk For Wishes was, the reality is there are still children waiting on their wish to be granted right here in the El Paso area. We need your support! To learn more about Make-A-Wish and how you can get involved, visit www.ntx.wish.org or call (915) 855-8700. or the last seven years, the El Paso Zoo has participated in raising awareness on

many issues that endangered animals face. This includes the Missing Orangutan Mothers (M.O.M.) event hosted at the zoo every year, around Mother’s Day. This event focuses on encouraging the community to help protect this species and their habitats. This campaign is a proactive and positive way to shed light on the crisis that these large apes, as an endangered species, face. In speaking to the orangutan keepers, Zoo Collections Supervisor Griselda expressed the importance of this event with me in saying, “The international M.O.M. event brings awareness to the public of how important orangutan mothers are for the survival of the species. Every day, orangutan mothers go missing due to poaching, black market pet trade and palm oil farms that encroach on their living space. In turn, most of the baby orangutans end up orphaned and in the hands of the black market pet trade, weak, lost and/or starved to death. This event means a lot to us and we contribute by holding this event yearly on Mother’s Day and donating to credible orangutan sanctuaries.”

Santa Maria

Steak Chef’s tip

Let your steaks sit for 10 minutes after cooking to ensure juiciness in every bite. 2 NY Strips, 1-½ inch

anta Maria style BBQ is a California classic that can easily take credit for launching the development of food scenes across the state. Of course, classic and traditional recipes have a time and place and today

is not that time, nor that place. Today is Father’s Day, and I want to step it up, my dad does a lot for me and I want to try something special for him. So I’m going to take the base elements of a Santa Maria rub and apply it to a NY Strip. I want a thick cut of meat that will take the high heat and stay juicy and pink in the center. I want that high heat with open flames so I can create a char and crust from the Santa Maria rub. The rub is filled with strong flavors that will complement each other; nonetheless, they are strong flavors. It’s best to serve this with a tangy and fresh salad to cut through the heaviness. Go the Greek salad route, the cucumbers, olives, red onion, and tomato will be the perfect side to a steak dinner.

hether you're male or female, if you've never tried a good, dry rosé, you're truly missing out –

particularly in the summertime, when they offer a refreshing counter to the outside heat. Over the last decade or so, dry rosé wine is becoming more and more popular among wine drinkers across the country, and it's even gaining some popularity among men and the same wine connoisseurs who once snubbed it. As consumers enjoy rosé more and more, winemakers are also taking notice and producing more types, or varietals, of rosé. Now you can fi nd a good, dry rosé on

just about every fi ne restaurant wine list you come across.

What is a rosé? Rosé denotes neither a grape varietal nor a grape region, and in some countries it's called rosado or rosato. In France it is called rosé, after the “fl ower of romance,” which is the rose, of course. Rosés are usually pink in color, but depending on the grape varietal used and the wine-making techniques, a rosé can range from a pale orange to a vivid,

When a rosé is made through “bleeding,” the winemaker removes most of the pink juice at an earlier stage and ferments it separately from the large batch of “must,” which is a substance containing grape juice, skins and other parts of the grape. The final method to make rosé wine is by simply blending a red wine with a white

There are three main ways to make rosé wine – through skin contact, bleeding or blending. In the skin contact method, red grapes are crushed and their skins are left to remain in contact with the juice for a period just long enough to turn the juice pink – typically just two or three days. Then it all goes through the pressing process, by which the skins are discarded. Most importantly, the skins of the grape contain tannin, which is a major factor in the fi nal taste of dryness in a rosé. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

different types of grapes, but the most common are zinfandel, syrah, grenache, pinot noir, mourvedre or cinsault.

When do I drink a rosé?

One of the big draws of a rosé is that it can possess some of the hearty characteristics of a red wine and the lightness of a white wine. 'Refreshing' is the word I hear most often when someone tries a rosé for the first time. Rosé is finding its spot “in the sun” as a summer wine. Many people describe the fla-

vor or finish as being very mineral-like. While “minerality” is a controversial word in wine, the finer rosés from the Tavel or Bandol regions of France are often described based on their minerality. Regardless of the proper descriptor, its crispiness and lightness make it a great wine to have by the glass in hot weather. Call me a wine “sissy” if you want, but truth be told, real men are starting to enjoy rosé! I enjoy a good rosé even in the cooler months, when paired with the right food.

Mixed Drinks and Wine | By: JOANN WARDY |

At a dinner party, your hosts may offer mixed drinks before dinner. When dinner is served however, do not carry your hard liquor to the table or consume it during the meal. Wine will normally be served with your meal. White wine is customarily served with chicken or white fish. Red wine is served with red meat or red fish such as salmon or tuna. Champagne may be served with dessert. If you do not wish to drink what is being served, put your hand over the glass and say “No thank you.” Feel free to ask for a non-alcoholic beverage. Joann Wardy owns and directs “The School of Etiquette and Enrichment” and was certified at “The Protocol School of Washington.” For children and adult class schedules call (915) 355-0992.
