hi is the fundamental principle of Feng Shui. Though difficult to define, it is best described as cosmic energy, life force and breath. Chi flows through the heavens, the atmosphere, the cosmos, the earth, your home and your physical body. The flow of Chi in your environment affects every part of your life: your health, your outlook, and decision making. The flow of Chi is influenced by all the elements of your physical environment: Colors, shapes, lighting etc. Even seemingly frivolous clutter and displaced items can be detrimental to the flow of Chi.
Your physical environment must have a flow of positive energy to regenerate and move your life forward. Your residence is the most influential structure and every object it contains affects the energy field and interacts with your Chi. Chi is especially important during the cold months of the year. During winter, the days are shorter, making for more darkness and time for inner reflection affecting some people with seasonal depression. It is vital to keep the Chi energy of the home active during this dark season. Since we spend so much time inside during winter, make sure there is sufficient light in the house by keeping lights on and even investing in highpower UV lights if need be. Another simple fix: Open the curtains to let some light in and open up the energy in your space. Playing uplifting music and perhaps practicing daily meditation are beneficial for our inner Chi. Another thing to consider during winter is stagnant air in our homes with our windows often being closed. Remedy this by adding live plants as they act as natural air fresheners, cleansing the air and emitting yummy scents. Along with this, examine areas where there’s unused space, or where the energy isn’t moving—i.e. empty corners, end tables cluttered with papers and magazines, etc.—and place a plant there. Preferable plants are ones that have an upward movement. In Feng Shui everything is symbolic, so a plant that grows upward instead of out will help boost the room’s Chi, or energy. Easy-to-care-for plants include snake plants, peace lilies, and aloe vera. Avoid plants that are spikey and stiff, and be sure to remove dead plants, dead flowers and potpourri. You can also refresh the air in your closed-up home with aromatherapy using uplifting and energizing scents. Citrus scents, such as grapefruit and lemon, in particular, are great to use. Light a candle for added decoration, or diffuse essential oils in citrus scents. Finally, we all know the freezing weather drives us indoors, leaving us with little desire to do anything more than curl up with a warm blanket. If you have a fireplace—great! Letting it burn will keep you warm and do wonders for your Chi. High body temperatures facilitate the flow of Chi through our organs.

pawned by a subtle influence from majestic homes of an era gone by, there lies a jewel in the desert just a few short miles beyond the quiet town of Hatch New Mexico. This stately manor of more than 20,000 square feet is quite an unexpected surprise in such a remote location. But as one gets to know the house and some of its cherished details, it’s easy to understand how the property, in this location, actually came to be. The homeowners hail from an established agricultural family that has had roots in New Mexico since the 1950’s. In those days, the family had ties to Lovington and Hobbs as cotton and sheep farmers. Now retired from the family business, and with their three children all grown up, they are looking forward to a simpler, more relaxed mode of life. When asked what one would call the style of their home, the couple responded that it’s actually a mixture of several influences. Years of travel gave this enthusiastic couple an affinity for the clean lines of prairie homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as well as the beauty of country estates they admired throughout Australia, the U.S. and Europe. The concept of designing a gracious domain that was timeless in every way was a focal point of which the couple never lost sight.

While going through the process of the design, the wife was quick to point out that they never set out to build a home of such stature: “It just kept growing,” she said, “as the concept became a reality.” Situated on a parcel of ranch land that covers almost 585 acres, this sprawling abode was no small task to design, yet the end results are both warm and welcoming in feel. The wife takes great pride in having brought many of the ideas home to share with her husband. She often dreamt of the comprehensive design and how it would all come to fruition. It was important that there would be ample storage and a place for everything. Evidence of that can be found in the large gift wrap room which includes storage for seasonal holiday décor, a generous butler’s pantry and separate food and dish pantries.

Ultimately the design of the house became that of a “U” shape. The home was built around an expansive outdoor courtyard with a stately loggia on the grounds just beyond. The concept for the house was that it would have views throughout that appreciated the vastness of the surrounding mountain ranges and the rich varying hues of color-washed southwestern skies. Several large “eye-brow” shaped windows let natural light permeate many of the over scaled rooms. The wife emphasized that there was not one element in the house that wasn’t deliberate or a customized detail. Even the furnishings, while all hand selected for the space that they’re in, offer the impression of having a certain sense of old world heritage and an ever present acquaintance with familial history.

Winter, 2019 Despite the house’s stately bearings, it lacks the need for constant formality. The family prefers impromptu gatherings with loved ones and enjoys every inch of the home in which they live. So, even though it has all the appearances of genteel formality, the house responds to the daily rhythms of ordinary modern life. First impressions, after all, can be deceiving.

A modern classic
hen you pull up to this modern classic home you are first greeted by its prominent stature situated on an expansive 1.2-acre corner lot. It sprouts up from the ground with clean straight lines, sometimes outlining smooth gray walls, and other times layers of 18- inch gray brick. An aluminum inset, that follows the entire perimeter of the 8,500 square foot home, breaks the flatness of the exterior walls calling the viewer’s eyes to its reflective face. As a grand gesture of welcome and hospitality, a massive 8-foot high walnut door unlocks and slowly opens to reveal a lifetime of dreaming, realized in the five bedrooms and six baths of this Upper Valley home. Walking into the home is truly a breathtaking event. Tall and long windows allow sunlight to flood the rooms with natural lighting showcasing the beautiful architectural detail of the home. Directly behind the front door is a stunning floating stairwell with solid walnut stairs, railed by clear glass, leading up to the second floor. Contrary to their effortless look, the stairs require a custom metal beam that supports them from the left-hand side while still giving them the elegant illusion of being suspended mid-air. From the perfectly flat walls to the inlayed walnut molding that lines them, each and every detail in this home was envisioned, thought out, and implemented by the owners, along with the help and input from J. Wechter Designs. After purchasing a 45-year-old house

that would serve as the foundation for a partial rebuild, the owners spent months with Jeff Huff, from Design Alliance Architects, developing a stunning contemporary escape. “I knew I wanted a home that was extremely architectural in detail with straight simple lines, high ceilings, 8 foot doors and that was extremely beautiful,” the owner said. As the demolition commenced, however, they soon realized that in order to get exactly what they want, the house would need to be completely torn down and built back up. In November 2011, a little more than a year after breaking ground, the owners finally moved into the one-of-a-kind masterpiece. The first floor contains an openness that exudes a calm and airy atmosphere. A modernized classic butler’s pantry divides the vast space into a living and dining area, where a magnificent round table sits at the center. Sturdy studded snakeskin seats surround the table with a texture that mimics that of two adjacent sliding doors that open to reveal a serving station attached to the kitchen. In the living area, a ceiling high, white limestone, doublesided fireplace provides definition for a reading room that contains a floor-to-ceiling walnut bookshelf and a K. Kawai Baby Grand Piano. Continuing on, you are lead into the main hub and heart of the home—the kitchen and family room. A professional chef’s kitchen is fitted with Miele appliances, including a steam oven, double master chef ovens, a coffee system, and a combined stove top with induction, a wok, a Teppan grill and gas burners. Their stainless steel finish seamlessly integrates with the glossy white cabinetry. Personality is given to the space with pops of vibrant color found in the bright violet stools that line the breakfast bar.

The owner explains: “The items that decorate the house, that we have collected throughout our marriage, don’t go with the house from a design perspective. However, they make the house special because they bring back memories… We haven’t lived in this house very long, we are starting over, but we get to bring the old into the new. That’s what makes this house a home.” The repurposed door that now serves as a coffee table adds to this room’s nostalgic feel, which starkly contrasts with the view to the outside. As you look through the tall glass doors, a 30-foot long and 15-foot wide salt water pool shimmers with incandescent cobalt blue tiles tessellating its floor and walls. They shine with the bright rays of the sun at daytime and glimmer with the recessed LEDs at night forming a one of a kind oasis. The two arc waterfalls at each end enhance the calming feel providing this family with the perfect spot for those hot El Paso days. As I walk past beautifully maintained grass and oak trees, through an arched red-brick entrance into this spacious four-bedroom, two-story house, the first thing that catches my eye are the large windows. Sunlight gushes into this home, filling it with light and warmth. The generous living room showcases a white-tone color palette and nearly floor-to-ceiling scenic doors made of glass. The space truly transcends the boundary between what’s indoors and outdoors. With a tranquil mountain sleeping in the near distance, the living room is serene and traditional yet sophisticated, just as the owner of the house desired.

The light brown wood flooring beneath my feet leads me through the light filled living area, past a marble top bar and into a gourmet kitchen with a center island made of dark wood. Waves of light fill every room continuing into the kitchen, with French windows that allow for broad views of the landscape. White wood dish cabinets have glass doors allowing me to see right through to the bowls and cups used to serve meals to the members of this family home. The kitchen, which centers around a French farm table brought in from New Orleans and a wispy chandelier, appears spacious enough to host a dinner party. Although the one in the kitchen is quaint, the most enchanting chandelier inside the home hangs over the formal dining area in the next room. With faux candles standing tall and a flurry of low hanging crystals, it’s something out of a fairy tale. True to the theme, French-style candle sconces adorn the wall and white dishes can be admired through the glass of a dark wood china cabinet. The mix of styles, from French to floral with cream colors, extends to all bedrooms. Shades of ivory duvets with light and dark wood bed frames maintain the home’s status quo. The master bedroom features a leather bench and comfortable leather recliner, perfect for reading and relaxing next to the French windows. The accompanying bathroom boasts a deep jacuzzi tub that sits beneath another splendid chandelier, the ideal spot to unwind with a significant other. Custom faucets with unique water dispensers add a contemporary twist to the classic style seen in most of the home.

Back at the home’s center and through the French back doors, I am led to a covered patio area with a full outdoor kitchen and a breathtaking sunset view of the city lights and mountain. Over the bistro table that sits aside the bar and grill area, hangs a grand, custom italian-inspired chandelier staying in theme with the home. By dusk, the many light fixtures create the cozy ambience of a French chateau. Adding to the comfort of this extraordinary home is the outdoor natural stone fireplace, which feels like an ideal spot to lounge with company and share a glass of wine. The guiding red brick walkway leads from the fireplace, past the outdoor kitchen, and down a set of steps to the lower level spa area. The flourishing lawn and chaise wood lounge chairs promise a relaxing poolside experience. I can’t help but wonder if I would rather cool off in the blue pool water reflecting the El Paso sky, or warm up in the Jacuzzi. This home is the merging of pure comfort with French elegance. Created to not only look impressive, but to also be impressively cozy.

Luxury spa treatments in El Paso have gotten a makeover, and Blush is breaking new ground—literally. The award-winning wellness center now has a chic new home nestled inside the Stanton House Hotel downtown. Those clients who were fond of the spa’s knowledgeable staff, organic products, and commitment to highquality care at the previous locations on Montana and Montecillo, will not be disappointed. “It’s ALL about the personal connection,” says Jennifer Ibarra, owner and esthetician. “And we get to be part of the downtown evolution.” Blush’s new location is emblematic of a larger evolution occurring in the industry: a deeper commitment to treating the body with kindness. I experienced this firsthand for my inaugural treatment at the luxe hotel. Parking is a breeze because valet is issued gratis for Bush clients. It took moments for me to descend the steps before being welcomed into the spa’s reception area and boutique. Stocked with product samples, the two rooms glow with soft light and sport a lovely, delicate fragrance. I was given a locker for my things—one of the new location’s best features are locker rooms for men and ladies—a robe, flip flops, and a reminder to take my time to enjoy the steam

room and new zen lounge before going into my service. Next, I met with my esthetician, Chantel, who is as knowledgeable as she is skilled, and gives the best facial I’ve ever had. And this is not by coincidence. “The most fun is the one-on-one with clients,” says Jennifer who has cultivated a dedicated staff over the years. She began offering services from a home spa in 2010 and opened Blush’s first location in 2012. Since then, she’s retained most of the original staff, which speaks to the culture of care Blush seeks to establish and explains the ease with which it seemed the employees were adjusting to their new home. “You have to trust people to help you,” she says. Clients can trust that the team at Blush can help them select services that range from standard sessions of self care to more extensive pampering. The spa boasts one of the city’s only float tanks designed to be the ultimate experience in unplugging from the 54

cacophony of news feeds, social media and other stresses that drown a deeper connection to ourselves. Additionally, the Vichy shower will ensure total cleansing, moisturizing and bliss from head to toe. The shower features five vertical shower heads that run while the client lies in a shallow water bed. Clients are treated to treatments that include a full body mud wrap, and concludes with shampooing and hair conditioning. Other services and packages are available for special occasions— ahem, Valentine’s Day—like an organic supreme facial with massage. The combo makes for a session that is as revitalizing as it is romantic. Blush’s swanky new location and capable staff rivals spa experiences I’ve had at the Four Seasons in both Austin and Washington, DC., yet it provides a certain degree of charm that is exclusive to El Paso thanks to the personalization of each experience and the comfort of being welcomed by familiar faces. e can finally feel good about devouring pint after pint of ice cream in the company of the “Real Housewives of New Jersey”. Well, not quite. But Peekaboo Ice Cream certainly moves the needle in the right direction. The Miami-based startup mixes vegetables and traditional ice cream to create a slightly less sinful dessert. Jessica Levinson, the company’s founder and owner of the Miami ice cream shop “Serendipity,” swears that her product is just as indulgent as its legume-free counterparts and delivers the same health benefits as normal veggies. She came up with the idea a few years ago while watching her family gulf down the frozen goods that she’d bring home from work every night. She thought it would be cool to at least pack some nutritional value into the stuff since they were unlikely to stop any time soon. To be honest, I was less than thrilled when my editor assigned me this article. Ice cream is great, but I’ve been always been loath to eat vegetables and couldn’t imagine the former adequately disguising the latter. I can still clearly remember staring down dinner plates at my family’s dining room table, everything licked clean besides the lonely remaining side salad. Brothers already excused and acutely aware of my parents’ unshakable gaze, I’d attempt to circumvent my pesky gag reflex by quickly gulping the greens down. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. It’s an experience I was happy to have behind me, and I certainly didn’t want to relive it under the pretense of indulging in a dessert.

Much to my surprise, however, the ice cream actually tasted as advertised. Far from making me gag, the sweet, creamy concoctions were almost impossible to put down. My favorite was the chocolate. With ingredients like organic cream, cane sugar and cocoa powder, the liberal dose of cauliflower proved completely inconspicuous. The vegetables do shine through in other flavors, but not necessarily in a bad way. For example, the strawberry’s carrot accents produce a unique flavor that tastes more refined than the typical version. Similarly, spinach seems to have given the mint chocolate chip a more aggressive, tangy tone. Entering its third year of existence, the brand currently features five flavors and sells at locations across Texas, south Florida, and on the Peekaboo online store. A few new flavors are in the works for 2020, although specifics have yet to be annouced. Jessica stresses that Peekaboo is no substitute for vegetables. Instead, the treats should simply serve to mitigate the consequences of traditional ice cream. If you’re like me, however, you may soon find yourself having at least three servings a day—flashes mischievous smile.

here’s one time of the year I’ll allow myself to give into baked goods: Winter. I’m usually not a fan of any sweets, but something about the cold weather makes me wants to overindulge in sugary carbs
and bundle up indoors. If you have time one of these cold

For my rendition of this time tested breakfast treat, I used a lot of heavy and savory tones in the egg mixture, adding in some orange to break through that bogged down feeling. Fresh orange zest often risks outshining sister ingredients, but here

You shouldn’t be afraid to use the extra spices and ingredients you bought for the holidays, they’ve been waiting for the perfect exit strategy from this cold season. Don’t worry too much about going overboard, after all, even mediocre French toast
Slice French bread diagonally for long strips, then slice those sheet and loosely cover with plastic wrap, place in closed oven and let dry out overnight.

Whisk together orange zest, eggs, molasses, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, heavy cream, milk, and instant coffee.

While bread soaks in egg mixture, melt and brown remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a 12” cast iron pan. Remove pan

from heat, add 2 tablespoons brown sugar to pan and whisk together until brown sugar is evenly distributed with butter along bottom of pan. 5.
Arrange soaked bread in cast iron pan while making sure points stick out of edges so they will crisp while baking.

Pour remaining egg mixture over arranged bread and bake for 18-22 minutes or until bread tips are browned and crispy, and egg mixture is set.

While French toast bakes, combine golden raisins with orange juice and rum. Let sit until French toast is baked. Raisins should absorb liquid and look plump. Drain before using.

Top French toast with powdered sugar, syrup and marinated golden raisins.

With most of life seemingly unpredictable and chaotic, it’s only natural that people should want to turn their bedrooms into secluded nests of comfort and serenity. Upholstered headboards, cloudlike down comforters and soft furry throws will all be flying off the shelves this winter as our bedrooms are becoming retreats from the world.

Make Your Statement Statement pieces are in this year, even in the home of a minimalist. An interesting rug, a few bright pillows or even a giant gold sculpture will do. Add a focal point to your space this year in any colorful and unique form—just make sure it’s not macramé.

Funky Lighting Throw conventions aside and bring home a golden curvy floor lamp that kind of looks like the antenna of a bug. If that seems too eccentric, pick up any other interesting light fixture as a way to perk up your place because interesting lighting is in. From chandeliers and sconces, to desk lamps and string lights, lighting is definitely the cherry on top. Choose your mood and set the tone with either bright LED’s for busy rooms, or soft yellow bulbs for relaxation spaces.

Say it Ain’t Rose It was a great year for rose gold and I’m sad to know that it is no longer with us. RIP to one of my favorite trends— that you will probably still find all over my house—you will be missed. From rose gold toothbrush holders, to bar accessories and fry pans, we hear gold and bronze are back in, and I’m not too happy about it.

Macramé Am I going to have to redo my whole house? Macramé wall art is now also out. Hipsters and wild-hearted individuals alike are mourning over the end of the macramé era, as short lived as it was. Although West Elm and other leading stores are still selling macramé pieces—for us out-of-date décor lovers—top trend alerts in home styling say we are moving on to less fiber art and more painted and metal pieces.

Mr. Grey Has Left the Building Fifty shades of anything other than grey is the popular theme predicted for 2019. While 2018 was all about cozy greys in the bedroom and bathroom, we are leaning away from cool grey tones this year and more toward white, browns and most all other tones… except rose gold.

Edison Bulbs Throw out your Edison bulbs, it’s not like they offer much light anyway. As nonchalant as that sounded, I’m sad to see this popular trend of exposed lighting dim. Maybe we can bring them back in 2020, but for the year 2019, they are out.
