THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

“A room should start a conversation before people actually start exchanging words.” – BARRY DIXON

EDITOR IN CHIEF

W

elcome to our colorful Summer Issue of The City Spaces. The question is often asked how we come up with our Spaces covers, and further more, how do we decide on the houses that we feature? It could be a luxury living

apartment, ultra-modern show home, Spanish colonial or a ranch style home -- we shop for eclectic styles, something for everyone. The idea is to show you our reader’s local homes, designed by local designers, and decorated by local fine furniture stores. The houses that make the cut are always loaded with ideas; it could be a new house filled with old stuff or an old house filled with new stuff straight from the latest market. The intention is to help you personalize your own home, not recreate or replicate your neighbors. A home should reflect the personality of the homeowner, their personal style. It seems what families are craving is not a “show place” but a “share place,” a place to share your life with your friends and family. As you flip through the pages, tabbing the magazine ideas that would fit your unique style remember that “personalization” is what’s in-style. If you like clean, airy, modern and sleek, you’ll find that within these pages. If you like bright colors with ranch flair, we have that home for you also. Wherever your remodeling, redesigning, or decorating dreams take you, I hope it’s to a place of mixing heirlooms with technology and rituals with trends - a design for your home inspired by the design of your life, the options appear to be endless. We hope to offer a fair share on these pages ahead. Enjoy!

nown for their tradition and reputation of excellence which proceeds their more than 26 year home building portfolio, Winton Flair Custom Homes have proven themselves to be one of El Paso’s most successful and long-standing builders. Paving the way as one of the

city’s first builders to offer an energy efficient home, Winton Flair has pioneered the standard that other builders, in subsequent years, have started to follow. Known widely for their traditional approach to home design, Winton Flair Custom Home Builders has breached that standard and implemented a more modern aesthetic for their Gailen Jr. II model, located at 12210 Chapel Hill in Mission Ridge, East El Paso’s up and coming mixed use subdivision. This model home boasts 2048 well-appointed square feet, which includes an open concept kitchen that overlooks both the dining room and great room areas, four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. The entryway sets the tone for the rest of the home by offering custom tile work in the form of a rounded tile medallion, an illuminated niche and an eye-catching modern light fixture, which is beautifully strung from its towering ceilings – each of these elements wets the appetite and urges you to press on and explore some more.

tepping into Santi at Montecillo is like meeting an innately sexy person that isn’t overly flashy and is completely self-assured. Santi is a 262-unit modern luxury apartment complex located in the center of the posh Montecillo community, where reality and fantasy meld to bring the best in luxury living. Its commanding views, combined

with the world of chic lobbies and halls decked in fine flooring with elevators as standard features for living, make Santi stand out. Santi is part of the second phase of El Paso’s 300-acre smart growth community called Montecillo. When all is said and done, the Montecillo community will feature living spaces for both buyers and renters,

“El Pasoans need to know that what’s happening at Montecillo is revolutionary. The fact that this project is happening in the city proper and not in the outskirts is huge. We’re bringing walkable neighborhoods and true community living back into the mix.”

along with several entertainment districts, gorgeous pools and parks and perks that El Pasoans have only dreamed of. “El Pasoans need to know that what’s happening at Montecillo is revolutionary. The fact that this project is happening in the city proper and not in the outskirts is huge. We’re bringing walkable neighborhoods and true community living back into the mix,” said developer Richard Aguilar of EPT Land Communities. Already within the Montecillo community, residents are enjoying the ease with which they can step out their door and into a restaurant, bar, yoga studio, or gelaterie/coffeehouse . . . and Montecillo is just getting started. Santi at Montecillo offers five, one and two-bedroom floor plans that come with standard high end features such glass and stone backsplashes,

appointed kitchens with French door refrigerators, soaring ceilings and the largest balconies in El Paso apartment living. This is about living in spaces that maximize our gorgeous mountain views and incorporating them into everyday living. All who live in Santi will enjoy several luxurious scene-setting community amenities such as multiple-level terraces, three of which feature outdoor fireplaces, a rooftop theatre and an infinity-edged pool. For Santi, the color wheel was spun and landed on cool greys for the walls, espresso pergolas and flashes of burnt orange on the exterior balconies for a pop of color. Designed for a view that looks beyond the Rio Grande to Mt. Cristo Rey, morning coffee with your paper at Santi is just what the modern apartment resident ordered. In creating floor models for Santi, developers enlisted the vision and design of two local furniture stores, Charlotte’s and Copenhagen. Each was assigned an apartment, Charlotte’s a two bedroom, two bathroom flat perfect for a couple who likes to welcome guests, and Copenhagen was assigned a modern, one bedroom unit for the single professional that favors modern minimalism and living life to the maximum.

Personally, furniture stores make me feel uneasy. Not because of an irrational fear of chairs or desks, but rather the association of shopping for furniture. Now I am sure many enjoy it, but for me, furniture shopping is painful. It’s just not exciting for me to look at a carbon copy bookshelf with the only difference in options being seven different shades of brown. Initially, I admit I had the same fear of something similar happening when visiting Copenhagen Imports – a fear that instantly dissipated after walking through the doors. If one were to try to describe the furniture in Copenhagen Imports in

proves to be tricky. “Some styles are just classics,” says Flemming, describing popular favorites of chairs such as Herman Miller and other styles which have withstood the test of time, including the 1929 Barcelona chair mentioned earlier. Teak products, which have been a staple of the store since the beginning, continue to weather the storm of time. “If you buy a teak desk it will last forever,” he describes. Other styles are new, and Copenhagen has made moves to accommodate. “The office styles have changed tremendously,” says Carlsen. “Usually now with tablets, smaller laptops, etc., one does not need one of the big [office] desks.” Now, Copenhagen offers sleek and fashionable desks and chairs to meet these needs. Being here since the beginning has its advantages – Flemming’s lengthy experience allows him to know the business in and out. In essence he loves the furniture business. It is no surprise what his answers are to his favorite pieces in the store – after considering the question briefly, he laughs and replies, “Why, all of it!” While Flemming’s reply brought a smile to my face, after looking around the store, his answer became understandable. Copenhagen’s furniture is no doubt contemporary, and perhaps because of this, almost everything for sale takes on a personality unlike its neighboring pieces, making it rather difficult to pinpoint a favorite. This provides an advantage to shoppers who may be looking for a singular piece of 48

furniture to spice up a room rather then having to shop for a matching set of furniture. “We have many customers that come in and buy just one piece,” says Carlsen. And with each piece providing its own flair and beauty just on its own, it is understandable to see why. “[It’s] very functional furniture,” says Flemming, but at the same time creativity is a necessity. “Houses usually get bigger, not smaller, and we need to be a little bit more creative [to satisfy each individual].” So what makes Copenhagen Imports different? After being in the store, it’s impossible to describe each and every beautiful piece – I’ll let the furniture itself do the talking if you make the choice to visit this wonderful shop. In words though, the best way to describe it is fascinatingly unique. I know I have used unique quite a bit, but quite literally each piece is interesting in a different way, and certainly made furniture appear to me in a way that I have never seen before. According to Carlsen, it’s rather simple. “If you like good design and good quality, there is not much to think about,” he laughs. If you are looking for traditional furniture, this may not be the furniture shop for you. But if you are looking for furniture with a personality? There is no other place. As Flemming says with a laugh, “I always say, there are two things you really need to see here. Carlsbad Caverns and Copenhagen, but not necessarily in that order.” www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Painted in a deep blue, the room is full of her daughter’s stuffed animals, a perfect example of how the entire home balances beauty with function. Following the same hallway, the house leads to the elegant master bedroom. With a stately four-poster bed, this room is the epitome of mixed modern style and old-fashioned charm. With a grand marble fireplace gracing the back wall, the deep wood floors pair wonderfully with the luxurious personality of the room. On the other side of the house is the kitchen, complete with a fantastic old-fashioned oven, beautiful countertops, a farmhouse sink and numerous other delicate features, this room satisfies the senses and offers the family, as well as their guests a wonderful place to congregate. Altogether the home of Laurencia and Bryan is a house full of history, love, story, and most importantly, family. Each and every detail gives guests the feel that as they walk into the home, they are leaving El Paso and stepping into the relaxing frontier of one El Paso family’s rich history, past and present. 60

n the historic Five Points district of El Paso sits an amazing place that is making a bit of history it’s own. The story of Marty Snortum and his amazing abode is one that starts off simply enough, “I discovered the space in the early 1980s as it was close to my old space on Yandell Street. It was a “dollar” movie theatre and I used to go see movies and think what an amazing photography studio it could be. It came on the market in the fall of 1989 and that’s when I started negotiating on it. I purchased it in January 1990, did a six month restoration and moved into the building July 4th weekend [of the same year]. I have never stopped working on the building since then,” said Snortum.

The constant work was initially required simply to make the space habitable. “The movie theatre was in terrible condition both inside and out … basically everything had to be redone -- floors, walls, ceilings, new plumbing, electrical, air-conditioning and heating, and roofing. The marquee needed to be rebuilt also. A total job that we crunched out in six months [in order] to move in.” The initial burst of revitalization had given way to a steady stream of upkeep according to Snortum. “The process has not stopped since moving in. The last few days I have been resurfacing the courtyard area. It is so large it has to be done in stages and the sealant can’t be applied over 90 degrees so I have to work everyday in the mornings to get it done.” It is often claimed that “home is where the heart is,” but one may also posit that the home is a reflection of the hearts that reside inside. “My family and I are collectors so I would say the past is important. We hit the estate auctions, flea markets, and try to unearth newly discovered old stuff that needs a home.” These reflections give a distinct and wonderful feel to all aspects of the Snortum abode, “I personally collect vintage and modern tiki mugs historically created for Polynesian Restaurants post WW2. All the bars and restaurants in America had their own signature mugs to take home after purchasing

the drink and that was the beginning of that collection.” Of course no great home is complete without a wonderful lawn. “We also collect vintage travel trailers which decorate our backyard. They are all different and unusual and bring us back to ‘the good ole days.’ Pretty cool to be able to hang out in them in great weather.” Mr. Snortum is also all too willing to confess that, like all great undertakings, the weight of such a unique home can sometimes be a bit overwhelming, “[There are] many burdens but many pleasures living in a movie theatre. [The] main burden is the maintenance of the property. It is an old structure from 1939 and although everything has been upgraded in the 90s, things still break.” Despite the occasional difficulties it is a burden that Mr. Snortum is all too happy to bear for the benefits, “To me it is absolutely worth the sweat and bucks it takes to keep it going. I don’t know if my kids will continue the challenge of ‘Stewardship’ but I hope so. I say they will have to pull me out in a body bag when the time comes.” Perhaps the most amazing thing about living in such a distinct venue is that despite its abandoned past and occasionally challenging present, the home offers a future full of joy to those who dwell within its walls. When pushed about where the space will go in the future, the owner is all to happy to share his passion for the potential his residence possesses, “All too many future plans. The beauty with this space is that it is large and malleable. I think I can say I am currently on rehab plan 45 out of 295. I will never finish the space. Probably the biggest challenge for the future is the cost of future rehab. It is just amazing how much things cost with a commercial building of this size.” Of course all work and no play, makes the former movie studio a dull home, “After putting up the wall around the parking lot and creating our backyard, I think it’s time to rest for a little while and enjoy.”

ack in the late 60s the beat generation, following Kerouac’s “On the Road”, as well as Dylan’s “Bringing it All Back Home” defined the mores of America, and in some ways, the world.

El Paso, though on the desert provinces of the US and Texas, was not in any way left out of this explosive cultural equation. A few blocks away from the definitive marker of the original central, the Spaghetti Bowl, was and is home to The Brew House. The Brew House used to be the Harry Mitchell Brewery in the 1930s that initially opened its door back in 1904. It’s a distinct brick 5-story building off of Alameda Avenue, with rooms 3,000 square feet large and ceilings 30 feet in height. This kind of building in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Chicago would be astronomical to live in, but in El Paso, it was just the right price for an experience that would transcend the markers and thresholds of generations becoming the next . . . From 1949 on into 1977, The Brew House had multiple owners, from investment bankers Harold S. Stewart & Co. to Ruff & Co. of San Antonio. It even had a German beer garden and restaurant back in the 40s and 50s. In 1956, Falstaff Brewing Corp. of St. Louis took over the brewery. In 1977, C.L. Hill Inc. invested money into remodeling the building, which at that point housed three print shops, a plastic bottle manufacturer, a furnisher and a warehousing firm. This building would take a unique shift into the world of bohemia that would in some ways become the district and scene that many El Pasoans became enamored and inspired by. In 1984 Dick Price and business partner Charlie Newman would purchase this solid historical building, and call it ‘The Brew House.’ After their purchase, a new generation moved in, and began a new cycle of powerful history centered around creativity, innovation, history, and the communal arts. One of the pioneers to this movement would be a man known as “Magic” Mike Ramsey. He heard of The Brew House through word of mouth, and eventually found himself taking up the entire top floor. At the time Mike moved in it was already an established art colony. The two actual businesses located there were an electrical contractor and a plastic injection molding company. On the second floor was a design studio where they made gowns for weddings and quinceñeras.

“The rest of us were like any other artist out there. We were all starving but we all came together when we had to. Our creative energy inspired us all to keep hitting our craft hard. This building and the people that it housed had fun,” remembers Mike. Mike moved into the floor that was previously occupied by guitarist and printmaker Jay Graves. He too speaks with an excited reverence for the time spent at The Brew House. Jay worked with Bob Barry, owner of Chameleon Press, producing limited edition fine art prints for five years. On the first floor was Carlos Enriquez Flores. He was a painter that would design and create at his huge live in/work studio backdrops for UTEP, El Paso Ballet, and El Paso Opera productions. Antonio Pina was another famous fine artist alongside Raphael Padilla who would create tapestries based off of Antonio’s pieces. Bruce Berman was also a big name at UTEP who also spent time at The Brew House, as well as Harmonica Bob Minor. He had a studio he lived in and gave voice lessons there.

Other artists such as Steve Macginnes, a screen printer, artist Steve Tyorak, as well as Lauren Jenson, UTEP professor and Frank Gepheart, painter-printer, would all frequent and contribute to the creative output of The Brew House. Dan Lomax, UTEP sculpture professor and his daughter both lived there. Lola Gandara did her famed stain glass and paintings in her studio there. Robin Quarm, son of the famed professor Joan Quarm, also did a stent at The Brew House. Some of the other names that were a part of this erudite period that went off and gained national and international success were Susan Davidoff, a successful artist who acquired her fame for her etchings and mono prints, and Noel de Gaytano, now a well-known New York artist, both created work at The Brew House. Even within my respective film industry, Ann Savino, who worked as a location manager and line producer on major Hollywood productions that came here in the late 1990s and early 2000s, spent some time there as well. There appeared to be a constant creative confluence that bubbled and brewed just as the beer brewed 30 years earlier within the same brick walls that made up The Brew House. Whatever the craft may have been, the quality and creative fiber of individuals that graced the vast spaces and high corridors within this special building infused their artistic imprint into the soul of The Brew House. Even to this day, there’s a cyclical creative molecule that continues to ferment within the walls of this building. It still brews with the next generation, burning the midnight oil and using it to paint their generation’s art on The Brew House walls.

Light fixtures are also a great way to make a metallic statement. There are many options to fixtures when considering re-vamping or building a kitchen; any room really. Ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, fan fixtures, pendants, recess lighting, utility lighting and wall fixtures are all options to consider. Metallic fixtures are a very clean and modern option. Many times combined with glass, even a colored glass to add umph, think of lighting as practical and decorative. Chandeliers and pendant lights are a great way to make a decorative statement as they hang to a point where the eye is drawn to it. Chandeliers today come in many shapes, sizes and materials, so stop imagining that opulent chandelier from the past and think metallic, modern, and artistic. Think about how visible counter stools that surround an island or counter area can be. Sometimes it might be the first thing a person sees when entering your kitchen for the first time. Modern and sleek counter stools in stainless steel, silver, or a lacquered plastic that shines in a vibrant jewel tone can really make for a great first impression. Paint would have to be the easiest and most cost-effective way to make the biggest impact in any room. Considering painting your kitchen a gemstone color is a big step. The colors are fairly dark and potentially over-powering. Consider painting an accent wall, painted brick, mosaic painted tiles in different shades of the same jewel tone, or only painting your cabinets a bold color. Painting your cabinets an emerald green or a ruby red can make for a fun DIY project this summer. Want to add some metallic pizazz? Spray paint in almost every metallic exists; gold cabinet doors could compliment a fun cabinet color.

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

When it comes to giving personal space a modern feel with a touch of style, one can face many decorating dilemmas. One such decision is deciding on what kind of coffee table best fits your room. Coffee table trends this year include much more than the table itself; designers and bloggers rage about the unique trends in coffee tables this year and also how to appropriately style those tables.

Ottoman: The most talked about coffee table trend is the ottoman being used as a coffee table. Myparadissi.com listed the soft, textured table as one of 2014s top trends as it serves two purposes and looks great in front of the couch. With many different approaches to the ottoman as the coffee table, one may take into consideration the shape (square, rectangular, or round), the design (sturdy or sleek), and the texture (velvet, leather or upholstery); all are based on personal space and preference. Styling the ottoman coffee table can be as simple as placing a tray for a flat surface to put flowers, books, magazines or to simply have a resting space for your feet. Trunk or Chest: Another up and coming coffee table trend is an old trunk or chest giving the space a vintage look and feel. Trunks can be spray painted or simply used “as is styled with modern accessories such as roses, candles and coasters. Using a trunk as a coffee table is a unique way to combine vintage charm with modern style and can easily be a focal point of your home. Antique Mirror Coffee Table: To keep the vintage vibe going, the antique mirror coffee table is a brought-back trend that will glam up the space it is in. This coffee table is a little more fragile than other tables in that its glass mirrors are easily breakable, but if kept in a secure location it will be sure to add glamour to any room. Styling mirror tables is simple because the table is already so beautiful in itself; adding any kind of decorative piece of your choice will only add to its beauty. This antique gem is more formal and delicate so they tend to work best in homes where children are a bit older. 83

Before you move into your new home it is important to clear out the energy or Chi of the home from the previous occupants. If it is a new home you may still choose to do this to clear out the energy of the workers and energy they may have left in your new space before you move in. It is important when moving from one home to another to pack and bring only with you what is really needed. If you have clutter do not pack this and bring into your new space, as this will only create more clutter in your new home. If you have old broken items either discard them, or better yet donate them. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure as they say. I advise people when moving into a new space it is important not to bring your old mop and broom with you into your new home. The moment you do you also bring any problems or issues you may have had at your old residence into your new space. Leave them in the old residence in the garage or washroom. If you do not feel like leaving them, then discard them in the trash. If possible when moving into a new home also purchase new fresh towels and linens for the home as this is another way to begin with a fresh start. Give the new home a good cleaning from top to bottom while it is still empty. It is easier to get the energy completely cleared prior to move in day. Steam the carpets, clean the windows inside and out, paint if needed, or wash the walls if you are up to it, and clean out cabinets and closets. Try to get out as much dirt as possible and best to do this on a bright sunny day as this helps to refresh the atmosphere. Be sure to keep the windows open to bring in added new energy. Another way to do some energy clearing is to ring a bell in each room. This helps to clear stagnant Chi and encourage fresh Chi energy into the space. If you do not want to ring a bell you can also clap your hands as well. Listening to uplifting, happy, upbeat music also works. Sea salt is also very powerful when cleansing a new space. It is helpful in removing negativity from the premises. You can sprinkle it onto the floor whether it is carpet or tile and leave it overnight. In the morning you can clean it by vacuuming or mopping up the sea salt. When mopping the floors, I personally like to use lavender scented cleaners as this helps to make the home calm and peaceful. By clearing out the old Chi of the home it helps to make the space yours, where you will feel right at home.

By the way, the paddles are not leaves, they are stems. Tiny leaves appear in spring and rapidly fall off. If you harvest them, you have to remove the spines and the glochids, the tiny hair-like barbed growths around the aureoles on the paddles. And you need to trim about Âź inch off the edge of the paddle because it is very tough.

Spanish speakers in my audiences laugh when I tell them we are going to get rid of the “mocos.” That’s what you get on your sleeve when you wipe your nose – a colorful but pretty accurate description. I use raw julienned cactus in a refreshing summer salad and cooked nopalitos in a variety of more hearty salads. I even use jelly

They are usually surprised at how good and flexible the gamey green bean flavor is. I say gamey green bean taste, as venison can be gamey compared to beef. Soups, salads, entrees and desserts. Who could ask for more versatility from one vegetable? And I get the fun of exploring more ways to use it. At an Arizona program, one audience member, a lovely lady of Hispanic heritage said, “Never in my life would I think I’d see a gringo eating nopales, let alone cooking them!” I told her to remember that they were in “estilo gringo” – gringo style and we had a good laugh.

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

We’re already in mid summer here in the Sun City and if you haven’t done so, you’ve simply got to spruce up your patio. With our hot temperatures, it’s easy to let the sun chase you inside during these hot months — but don’t fear! With a little elbow grease and a little know how, you can transform any space into a shady oasis. Whether you have a luscious covered patio or a simple six by six foot space outside of your apartment, it just isn’t summer without spending some much-needed time soaking up some rays from a patio or outdoor space that is as cute and sophisticated as you are.

Pull Up a Chair First things first, you obviously need some furniture to sit back and relax on. For this there are lots of options depending on your needs, your budget and your personality type. One of the most popular options in the outdoor world right now is the trendy L couch. Most outdoor and hardware stores carry these in stock, but many people have even taken to creating their own out of pallet wood. Another hot piece is hanging beds and hanging seats — which are a premium nap choice. These can also be made from pallet wood, although it is important to do a little research on how and where to hang them if you intend on hanging them in a high traffic zone where kids, animals and people may use it often. If you are limited by space hanging chairs, Adirondack chairs, and hammocks may be more your speed. Adirondack chairs are currently all the rage right now too and are being sold in both plastic and wood. If you want something you can lay back on, hammocks are a great option because most designs allow you to take them down when you are not using them (which if you want more room for potted plants or a small table and chairs, a hammock will allow you to store it elsewhere when you are not using it). Whatever furniture type you choose; just make sure it fits the ultimate function you want your patio to serve. If you are an avid reader, choose something that will allow you to kick back and relax, or if you want to entertain, pick furniture that seats and holds more people. 97

Lanterns & Lighting We’ve already talked about the big items every patio needs, now let’s talk about the details. What really separates your basic backyard from a relaxing paradise is the small aspects that truly make it personal. Lighting is key here. Trending now are many large lantern-like candleholders that will add an air of decadence and light to your patio that will make even the plainest porch into a glowing nook. If you have a place to hang them, investing in sturdy outdoor string lights is another way to achieve this. Not to mention, the romantic Tuscan-feel it will bring to your evenings. Whichever path you choose, you are sure to bring extra comfort to your outdoor space which will surely make the rest of your summer (and fall!) more relaxing than ever.

Light a Fire Another trendy item making its way into more and more people’s backyards are outdoor fire pits. Yes, it’s summer and we have an excess of heat, but El Paso evenings are cool enough to accommodate them. Fire pits are also great aesthetically, adding a touch of incandescence to any patio; they are also perfect for late night conversations and evenings filled with delicious s’mores. There are many ways to install fire pits ranging from buying portable pits at your local hardware store, to making your own. Whatever way you choose this small addition is sure to add flair, fire and interest to your outdoor space.

Go Green Nothing says summer more than a bountiful green garden. Whether you are planting vegetables, succulents, or beautiful desert flowers – there is simply something very organic about plants that add life and depth to any space. But it is what you plant them in that is the key here. Today there are dozens of awesome ways to plant gardens big and small. Some of the most trendy this summer are cement planters. With French cottage and the industrial style being so popular, this minimalist DIY project is so easy to do, you won’t believe it. You can also use your concrete creations to hold candles and other patio features. If you simply don’t have the space to house mounds of potted plants, you could try vertical gardening. There are many ways to do it from buying hanging garden planters to making your own vertical succulent cage garden, or cute mason jar plant holder. Whatever you choose, these innovative planters will give your space some much-needed green without eating your budget.

ave you ever had the desire to rear your own garden from seeds? You’ve seen those shelves in the local garden or hardware store with seed package after seed package — perhaps you’ve even browsed and wondered what it would be like to do it, to actually plant, wait, and feel what it’s like to be your own produce man. In this day

and age, the concept and patience required to raise your own tiny seedlings from little dots, to flourishing, fruit and vegetable-bearing plants is a lost art. For the rare gardener who does aspire to have their own veggie beds, buying the plants with roots, leaves, and even sometimes early blossoms is often an easier and faster way to get to harvest . . . and with El Paso’s short growing seasons, who could blame anyone for this. But through the long wait there is a sense of accomplishment that comes when your seeds finally do grow into the plants you always dreamed them to be. Imagine having company over to your house and serving a fresh garden salad with lush tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumbers that grew from little seeds into the beautiful organic creatures on your plate. Just picture your friends doting over your gardening skills. In these short moments of glory, the hard work you have put into your seeds has finally paid off. You can officially say that you have successfully grown your own food. And I think we can all admit, that is a feat well worth a pat on the back. For those who have never planted seeds (with the exception of overseeing kindergarten experiments in early elementary school)

So now we’ve picked some great vegetables. Let’s move on to what’s next: soil. For best results and (let’s face it) our climate, you need to pick a bag of soil that is packed with seed-rearing minerals and nutrients. As your seeds grow, just like children, they are gong to need to proper nutrition if you want them to do well, survive and thrive (bearing big, healthy vegetables when they reach maturity). Any reputable gardening store will carry just what you need. Once you’re back home and are ready to start, put your gardening gloves on and prepare to position your plants for success. For this next step, I am going to recommend planting your seeds using old brown eggs and their cardboard containers. Eggshells are loaded with even more vitamins and nutrients that will give your seeds their best chance. As I did this myself, I found it challenging to drain the eggs without completing destroying the shells . . . but there are ways. After extensive trial and error, I found the best and most successful way to complete this was to hard-boil the eggs. After the eggs have cooled, remove a very small hole at the top of the egg and slowly pull the egg out. It’s okay if what you get isn’t perfect; essentially all you need is enough room for a small seed to fit inside the base of the shell. Also, prick a little hole in the bottom of the shell so the water can drain out of the egg. When all of your shells are ready and prepared, fill them with soil. It is best to fill them all the way to the top because as you water them, the soil will inevitably sink a little bit. From here, dig a small hole in the soil and drop multiple seeds in each container. Cover the seeds with a touch more soil, follow this step with water and you are ready to begin the long wait. Depending on the plant, you will be surprised how quickly these magnificent little seeds will spring up. Once you see green, it’s essential to put them in a window with at least six hours of sun. Now that these guys are bigger they do not depend solely on water and need this light to grow big and strong—on the same token, do not let the soil get too dry (ensure that the soil is nice and moist everyday with fresh water) or the seed, and all the work you’ve put into it, will dry out and wither. At this point if you have watered and sunned your seeds, you will see growth daily. About three to four weeks in (again this also depends on the plant) you are going to have to transplant them into larger containers. This can also be a tricky part in the process. Although these plants are growing bigger everyday, they still need tender loving care. As you are removing them from the egg containers, be very gentle or the delicate stems can snap. You may even find that after carefully removing many of the seeds, some will die as the days pass in their new containers but do not lose heart, this is simply part of the process and out of all the seeds you planted, some are bound to grow big and strong. As they grow bigger weeks in, you are once again going to have to transplant them into their 102

the new Green

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

It was their first home as newlyweds and a friendly neighbor came over to welcome the couple to the community. Introductions made and warm feelings established, the neighbor explained that their new abode was the one home on the block with grass. The couple agreed appreciatively and imagined warm days of mowing, gardening and iced tea served on a tray. The warm feelings quickly turned frosty as the “friendly” neighbor shamed them for all the water they’d be wasting, turned on her heels and headed toward her yard. Clearly there would be no Christmas cookie exchanges between them. The couple looked up and down their new neighborhood and did notice the landscape looked, well brown. After doing their research on native plants they developed a plan and discovered that brown can be the new green. Xeriscaping is an alternative to traditional landscaping and gardening using native plants that require little water upkeep, lowering the consumption of imported or ground water. “Xeriscaping, with the emphasis on ‘xeri’ – the Greek word for dry, does not mean ‘xero’ as in zero landscaping. Knowing what your soil is like and choosing appropriate plants that will flourish where you live is what we want to accomplish,” explains Sarah Wood an El Paso Master Gardner volunteer for the El Paso office of the Texas A & M Agrilife Extension Service (T.A.M.A.L.E for short). According to Wood the trick to sustaining any kind of lawn here in the Borderland is to “water deeply but infrequently.” Unless you’ve been living under a river rock the last decade, you know that El Paso is on the tale end of an extended and distressing drought, but aside from this we do live in the desert! The advantages of xeriscaping are ample. It requires less maintenance, saves money and can visually add some desert magnetism and curb appeal to your home. With proper designing, plants such as cacti and agave can take advantage of the environmental conditions and flourish. Just mind the thorns though – running barefoot through a patch of Xeriscape yard is definitely out of the question! For some traditionalists letting go of a lush green lawn can be difficult, but with the mixture of plants native to our Chihuahuan desert your yard can be as colorful as ever. When plotting the layout of your Xeriscaped yard keep in mind that you do not need to remove all turf grass, simply minimizing it can save a substantial amount of water. Look into soil that drains quickly but retains water and also add more organic materials to your soil and keep the area www.thecitymagazineelp.com

aerated. Once you’ve decided on the visual layout use desert plants like Lantana in several bright yellows and oranges and Texas sage that blooms beautiful lavender. Ice Plant adds sufficient ground coverage; Mexican Birds of Paradise do well in the hot Texas weather and Red Yucca will attract Hummingbirds to your desert oasis. Ocotillo plants bring a vertical component to the garden as well as a pop of color. Careful placement of river rock or creating a mock dried riverbed can add an attractive authenticity to your lawn. To get started on your Xeriscaping project visit the El Paso Master Gardner’s website and sign up for a class where you will be given a step by step tutorial in the art of minimal water flora. There are endless creative ways to incorporate Xeriscaping into your world. The southwestern charm of Talavera pottery brimming with desert succulents or turquoise pots sporadically placed throughout your lawn will balance dreamily with the El Paso sunsets.

POOL safety

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

The summer heat is in full effect making it the perfect time to throw on some sunscreen and hit the pool. With summer fun, comes summer safety --here are five “must-haves” when it comes to keeping everyone safe in the pool this summer.

Pool Fences: The most common pool safety feature is the pool fence. Whether it’s up for the safety of your children, pets, or other adults having a pool fence gate locked makes it easy and safe. Swimmingpool.com lists up to nine different types of pool fences to ensure safety including aluminum and steel fences, both being very reliable with low maintenance. Aluminum fences are lighter in weight than steel fences but its physical attributes cause it not to rust. A more relatively inexpensive choice than aluminum or steel would be a wooden fence, however wooden fences do require a higher form of maintenance. Whether the fence is picket or privacy style it needs to be painted periodically. An alternative selection would be a composite fence that has the look and feel of a wood fence without all the maintenance. Other fence alternatives include chain link, vinyl, perimeter and removable fencing which is the most popular among pool owners. Removable fences are made of a mesh material to be set in place when children or pets are around. The mesh gives the fence a transparent “feature” giving others a clear view of inside the pool.

Pool Safety Nets: If having a pool fence isn’t the right fit, pool safety nets are a great alternative. They provide a secure barrier while maintaining the backyard space. The foundation of the nets safety is in the size of the nets squares, which are small enough to prevent anyone from falling through but too large to walk or stand on and can be easily

removed or replaced by one adult in about 5 to 10 minutes. Unlike pool fences, children are unable to climb a safety net, and as with all safety barriers, the net serves as a deterrent. Remember whatever the situation, children should never be left alone by a swimming pool.

Safety Pool Covers: One of the most crucial safety devices a pool owner should have is a pool cover. Pool covers come in two styles: mesh covers and solid covers. Mesh covers are designed for long-term use such as covering the pool for winter but serve as a safety device

in the summer. They require little to no maintenance as anything that falls on the cover will generally be blown away and allow rain or snow to fall through. Solid covers serve the same purpose but for temporary use only.

Pool Alarms: There are many different types of pool alarms from gate alarms, perimeter alarms, to wave and motion sensors. Among the most inexpensive alarms are the gate alarms that are mounted directly to pool gates. They’re battery powered and are

activated when the gate is open and have an override button that can be pressed by adults to allow passage. Pool entry alarms are listed as low as $30 at Lesliespool.com. Perimeter alarms are an alternative safety feature as they serve the same purpose as gate alarms but are positioned around the swimming pools perimeter. The alarm is activated by someone entering the pool and breaking the perimeter beam. Beams are positioned 12 to 24 inches above the ground and can easily be

Suction

entrapment is defined as a swimmer being pulled down by the suction of the pool or hot tub drain. The victim’s hair, limbs or other body parts can become trapped in the drain. The enactment of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act was a result from a rise in serious injuries and drowning deaths from being entrapped by the suction of swimming pool drains. blocked. Once installed by a professional, it requires little to no maintenance. Swimming pool injuries and drowning risks can easily be prevented with the right safety equipment. Pool and hot tub handrails are always a recommended pool feature as they make getting in and out of the pool easier and provide protection against slipping.
