2021/2022 SEASON BROCHURE

Introducing the 2021-22 Center Presents Season sponsored by Allied Solutions Welcome to the new Center Presents season at the Center for the Performing Arts! In the decade since we opened in 2011, we have faced many challenges and celebrated many successes, but few could be more rewarding and exciting than welcoming live audiences back into our venues after so many months of uncertainty. Though we are proud to continue offering the livestreams and other new online resources we developed to serve you remotely over the past year, they cannot replace the power of the live performing arts experience.

Now we can look forward to a compelling 2021-22 season, with nearly 40 performances on the calendar and more to come, in a broad range of styles and genres. The lineup includes the Palladium debuts of eclectic singersongwriters Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright; Wainwright the country sounds of Clint Black and Farewell Angelina; rescheduled dates with humorist Angelina David Sedaris and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis; Marsalis and classical outings with legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman and American Pianists Association award winner Sean Chen.

We also have fun variety shows from The Company Men, Postmodern Jukebox and Pink Martini; musical satire with YouTube star Randy Martini Rainbow; tributes to the Beatles and George Rainbow Michael; holiday shows from Debby Boone and Michael Dave Koz; Koz performances inspired by Irish and South American folk traditions; and dazzling feats of acrobatics, magic and percussion for families to enjoy together.

In addition to the world-class performances on our stages, the Center offers a variety of education and outreach programs for the community, from dance classes and children’s music to book clubs and ukulele lessons. You can read more about them on Page 20.

The Center also is home to the Great American Songbook Foundation and its Exhibit Gallery (see Page 24), as well as six vibrant Resident Companies with their own upcoming seasons of music, theater and dance, as you’ll see on Page 26.

Thanks to the creativity and efforts of this extended family, the Center has attracted more than 1 million patrons since opening in 2011.

The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences.

The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the 1,600seat Palladium, the 500-seat Tarkington and the smaller black-box Studio Theater create a welcoming environment for the regional community to experience and participate in all forms of the performing arts.

Each year, the Center Presents performance season offers scores of concerts and other events in the fields of pop, rock, country, jazz, classical, comedy, family programming and more. The Center is home to the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and provides space, ticketing and other support services for six Resident Companies: Actors Theatre of Indiana, Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Central Indiana Dance Ensemble, Civic Theatre, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre and Indiana Wind Ensemble. Center facilities also are available for rental events, including performances, corporate meetings, weddings and other social occasions.

Since opening in 2011, the campus has hosted more than 2,400 performances and distributed over 900,000 tickets to patrons from all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states and over 25 nations. The campus also welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for public events such as the Carmel Farmers Market and the holiday Christkindlmarkt.

Singer-songwriters Rufus Wainwright and José González are co-headlining a 10-date U.S. tour in support of their latest albums.

Wainwright’s Grammy-nominated ninth studio release Unfollow the Rules finds the eclectic artist returning to pop after a break to pursue classical projects. The new songs include “Trouble in Paradise,” “This One’s For the Ladies (That Lunge)” and “Early Morning Madness.”

González is known for his warm voice and deft nylon-stringed guitar work. His album Local Valley, due out in September, includes the single “Visions.”

Drummer Dan Brubeck and bassist-trombonist-composer Chris Brubeck have been making music together nearly all their lives and began working in the 1970s with their legendary father, Pianistcomposer Dave Brubeck, who died in 2012.

In this multimedia presentation, the brothers will mark the centennial of their late father’s birth with a tribute that includes stories and images as well as music from his extraordinary life and career. Dave Brubeck, a leading exponent of cool jazz, is perhaps best known for his 1959 album Time Out, which remains one of the most popular and influential jazz records of all time.

Direct from Rio de Janeiro, they perform the music of their home country: sambas, bossa novas, ballads and other songs and instrumentals influenced by the cultures of Portugal, Cuba, Africa and the Americas. The band has performed at venues and festivals around the world.

Founded by native Hoosier and legendary gospel songwriter-producer Bill Gaither, this Grammy-winning vocal group has performed in the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.

Today, the Gaither Vocal Band roster comprises five powerpacked voices: Bill Gaither, Wes Hampton, Adam Crabb, Todd Suttles and Reggie Smith. They are known around the world for their stunning vocals, innovative harmonies and life-altering message – a message of grace, hope and redemption.

Returning to the road with a solo piano tour, Ben Folds has created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five (“Brick,” “Army,” “Battle of Who Could Care Less”), along with multiple solo albums and many collaborative records. His last album was a blend of pop songs with his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra that soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s classical and classical crossover charts. Folds has performed with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras and currently serves as the first-ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

FRI NOV 19 AT 8PM | THE PALLADIUM Pianist Sean Chen has won praise for his “alluring, colorfully shaded renditions” (New York Times) and “genuinely sensitive” playing (LA Times). He was the winner of the 2013 American Pianists Awards, placed third at the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and was named a 2015 Annenberg Fellow.

His album releases include La Valse, a solo recording on the Steinway label; a live recording from the Cliburn Competition released by Harmonia Mundi, cited for its “ravishing tone and cogently contoured lines” (Gramophone); and a recent album of flute, oboe and piano repertoire titled KaleidosCoping, with colleagues Michael Gordon and Celeste Johnson.

Her record-breaking 1977 single “You Light Up My Life” was a No. 1 hit for 10 straight weeks and later ranked No. 7 in Billboard’s 50th Anniversary Hot 100. In recent years, Boone has been exploring the Great American Songbook with such albums as Reflections of Rosemary, a musical portrait of her late mother-in-law, Rosemary Clooney; and Swing This, inspired by her father, Pat Boone, and his headlining years in Las Vegas.

POSTMODERN JUKEBOX: THE GRAND REOPENING TOUR

Best known for viral YouTube videos that reinterpret modern pop hits in various vintage genres, Postmodern Jukebox is a rotating musical collective founded in 2011 by arranger-pianist Scott Bradlee. In addition to the group’s many independent releases, Concord Records has issued two The Essentials collections featuring PMJ classics from American Idol alum Haley Reinhart’s torch song rendition of Radiohead’s “Creep” to actor-comedian Wayne Brady’s Cab Calloway-inspired version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

The ensemble of singers and musicians is returning to the road and celebrating “the new Roaring ’20s” with its Grand Reopening Tour of North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

DAVE KOZ & FRIENDS CHRISTMAS TOUR 2021

A popular annual tradition at the Center, saxophonist and bandleader Dave Koz’s holiday concerts feature stellar special guests performing fresh, lively arrangements of seasonal favorites in a high-energy show for the entire family. This year’s tour features Jonathan Butler, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun and Rebecca Jade.

In a career spanning three decades, Koz has earned nine Grammy nominations and sent nine albums to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. An entrepreneur and restaurateur, he also hosts two radio programs: the syndicated The Dave Koz Radio Show, on the air over 20 years, and The Dave Koz Lounge on SiriusXM.

The King’s Singers have represented the gold standard in a cappella singing on the world’s greatest stages for over 50 years.

Comfortable in a sweeping range of styles and genres, the sixmember group continues to push boundaries while honoring its origins in the British choral tradition. Committed to creating new repertoire, the ensemble boasts over 200 commissioned works by many leading composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Its extensive discography has won numerous awards including two Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, and a place in Gramophone magazine’s inaugural Hall of Fame.

David Sedaris is a master of satire and one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. His new book, The Best of Me, is a collection of 42 previously published stories and essays, and coming this fall is A Carnival of Snackery: Diaries (2003-2020). His previous best-sellers have included Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Me Talk Pretty One Day and 2018’s Calypso, a Washington Post Best Book of the Year.

Sedaris’ pieces regularly appear in The New Yorker and twice have been included in The Best American Essays. He has received five Grammy Award nominations for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. In 2019, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

BERLIN PHILHARMONIC PIANO QUARTET

THU JAN 20 AT 7:30PM | THE PALLADIUM The Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet, one of the few existing ensembles of that instrumentation, has existed as a Berlin Philharmonic chamber music ensemble since 1985. This highly praised group is a collaboration between three award-winning permanent members of the Berliner Philharmoniker: violist Matthew Hunter, cellist Knut Weber and violinist Luis Esnaola, along with the renowned concert pianist Markus Groh.

This outstanding ensemble is committed to not only representing the standard repertoire of classical, romantic and modern pieces, but also finding undiscovered masterpieces of the literature that encompasses over 400 works.

The group is on its inaugural U.S. tour, featuring dancers Pedro Sanchiz and Ivana Ayala as the primary couple in the company.

The supporting combo, Tango Bardo, is a standard tango quartet composed of piano, double bass, violin and bandoneon, a relative of the European concertina that is popular in Argentina and Uruguay.

Using traditional Son Jarocho (“Veracruz Sound”) instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), they sing in English, Spanish and Spanglish, melding styles from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. Palladium Players Plays are written to be performed aloud and heard, not just read silently. For our reading, we are looking for people who are interested in learning a bit more about plays, reading some characters and discussing the scenes. Please plan for the excerpts and discussions to last about 60 minutes.

Songbook Exhibit Gallery The Great American Songbook Foundation’s interactive gallery at the Palladium celebrates timeless popular music with rotating exhibits drawn from the Songbook Archives.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook.

ARCHIVES The Great American Songbook Foundation oversees the Songbook Library & Archives, a vast and growing resource containing recordings, arrangements, images, memorabilia, personal papers and other items from the 20th century golden age of American popular music. The Library & Archives was established to preserve the physical artifacts of the Great American Songbook’s creators and performers for the education and benefit of current and future generations.

The facility also includes a reference library and study space for researchers who wish to learn more about the music and the culture it has inspired.

SONGBOOK HALL OF FAME The Great American Songbook Hall of Fame celebrates lyricists, composers, performers and other artists who helped to create “the soundtrack of our lives” with their contributions to American popular song. With plans to establish a Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Museum, the Foundation is now in its tenth year of inducting honorees ranging Duke Ellington to Chita Rivera.

In addition, the Great American Songbook Exhibit Gallery – open to the public – is a multimedia educational center with rotating exhibits displaying pieces from the Archives.

As a Cultural Affiliate of the Los Angeles-based Grammy Museum®, the Songbook Foundation is among a handful of institutions worldwide that collaborate on exhibitions, educational initiatives, research programs, internship opportunities, technical support and more.

EDUCATION/OUTREACH The Foundation has developed effective education and outreach programs to introduce people of all ages to the music and composers of the Great American Songbook in the context of American history and culture.

The annual Songbook Academy® is the nation’s only music and performance intensive for high school vocalists that is dedicated solely to the music of Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-20th century. Students from around the country apply for the opportunity to learn and perform under the guidance of Broadway performers, music industry professionals and educators from respected university music and theater programs.

To accompany its physical collections and on-site programming, the Foundation has developed a robust menu of virtual programming and online resources including digital exhibitions, collections highlights, video tours, activity kits, educational materials and more.

The Foundation’s Perfect Harmony program, developed in consultation with a board-certified music therapist, is a music resource that provides care partners with appropriate generational music and activities to engage older adults in a shared music experience. By offering monthly video resources, playlists and themed music activities for individual and group settings, Perfect Harmony offers a unique opportunity for social engagement and promotes holistic well-being through music.
