ell, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 20th Attempt,

Almost A Tradition, Pre-Daytona, Valentine’s Day Party, and Oyster Roast is in the history books. It was a huge success and despite Punxsutawney Phil’s prognostication of 6 more weeks of winter, the hearty came out to party. And party they did! out front, in the bar, and out back the were scarfing down steamed oyster by the bushel while rockin’ to the music of RUKUS. Burn outs? Yes, there were righteous burnouts. If you weren’t there, you are just gonna have to read the article on page 16 and look at the pictures at Full Throttle Magazine.com. So now with the warmer riding weather approaching, we are looking forward to…..Riding !! We are going to begin a Full Throttle Bike Night Tour and attend select advertiser’s bike nights in April just to get out and about (ride). The CBA Swap Meet at the Rowan County Fairgrounds sponsored by Tilley H-D kicks off March 24-25 and it is as much fun as a barrel full of…. You get my drift. They have all kinds of biker type stuff going on like a great bike show, best buns contest, a tattoo contest, and lots of vendors. Check out the cover story on page 5. You gotta be there. One of the events (ride) is the Motorcycle Awareness Ride on March 31st. This ride sponsored by Biker Trash Nation, Smokin’ H-D, and Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine will leave from Market Place Mall on March 31st. KSU at 12:30. This ride is to let cagers know that motorcycles are everywhere. Check out the ad page 35. Angelo Greco Is hosting the Spring Fever Bash at Tank Town Tavern in Charlotte on April 21st and invited The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine to be involved. So, we will be there with bells on. Consider this your invitation to be there, too. More details on that bash on page 27. If you would like to be part of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine team, give us a call. We have a place for you.

Cover Story

Charlotte CBA 45th Annual Spring Swap Meet & Bike Show

Hello, again Friends! I hope everyone had a safe and happy beginning to 2018. I know we are all suffering from PMS [Parked Motorcycle Syndrome] and anxiously awaiting dry and warm weather. Well, get your motors running and yourself ready for the first big party of 2018. The 45th Spring CBA Bike Show and Swap Meet will be held March 24 & 25 at the Rowan County Fairgrounds in Salisbury [1560 Julian Road]. It is sponsored by Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury. The Salisbury dealership is on Bendix Drive and is staffed by some great folks. Stop in and see them sometime. The Swap Meet is open Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm both days. Along with 3 buildings and a huge midway full of vendors selling motorcycles, parts, accessories, motorcycle clothing, leathers, and of course, t-shirts and jewelry. There will be music by Mitch Clark and the 69Z Band. We will have a Wet T-Shirt Contest with cash prizes of $500 and a Best Buns Contest worth $500. The Bike Show will have a $1,000 cash prize. Polish up your bike and bring it on out to show it off and maybe win some money. The People’s Choice Winner is pictured on our fliers and will be in the Bob Karney calendar. And, as a special attraction this year, Danny Thompson, from TV’s Airplane Repo, will be making an appearance. Danny is a real NC biker, not a TV biker. Come out and meet Danny. He is a true biker and a great guy! The new location in Salisbury has worked out well for us and the vendors really seem to like it. I’ve seen more parts being sold and

7

taken out the back gate in the last 2 years than any show while we were in Charlotte. It’s a true grass roots swap meet and bike show and not just a t-shirt and someone blowing smoke up you’re a** event. It is a good time. As with anything new, there are bumps to work out. We are working on getting everything fixed up to make everything work easy for all of us and to the best of our abilities. We are open to any constructive suggestions to better our shows. As with any new engine, there is a break-in time when you have to work through any misfires to get things adjusted right. It takes time and effort, but eventually the engine purrs. With the March show, bike parking will be at the same location and, as always, bikes park for free. Car and truck parking will be moved to a new location because the fairground lost the parking area across the road to new construction. There will be signs and people to direct you to the new parking areas. Please be patient as we fine tune this new bump in our road. Please come out and enjoy our show and remember, the money you spend at our show stays in North Carolina. The money does not go to California like another show that comes to our State. Concerned Bikers Association is the only MRO [Motorcycle Rights Organization] in North Carolina and uses the money to fight for your motorcycle rights in North Carolina and in Washington, DC. CBA invites ANYONE to join us in fighting for your rights. You can join at our show, at a reduced show rate, or you can come to any of our meetings at the Iron Thunder Saloon meeting room, across from Concord Mills. Our meetings are the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 7pm. And, if you aren’t from the Charlotte area, CBA has chapters across the State, so there is always someone close by. For more show information or general information on CBA, please visit our website at CharlotteCBA.org or CBA-ABATENC.org for State information. THANKS – Get your motors running and come out to the 45th Spring CBA Bike Show & Swap Meet!

For twenty years, we’ve rolled the dice, made all the preparations, advertised, and crossed our fingers. The weather rarely cooperates, but the party is always fun. This year we started out with light misty rain and fog. As the day wore on, the fog remained, the mist left us, too. The real rain didn’t start until we were packing up to go home. We were so happy that David and Missie wanted to host the party at Double D Burnout Saloon because we started the February parties because that location was County Line Tavern. Back then we had misty rain and served vegetable soup and oyster stew to a group of friends

and Tavern regulars. The next year, at County Line, we added Pre-Valentine theme to the party with a best lips contest for the ladies and a tattoo contest. The third year was the kicker that brought on the “Attempt” part of our title. We were back at the same location, but we were running it as Full Throttle Saloon. We made the plans and advertised the party in Full Throttle Magazine only to be juked out of our lease at the last minute, so the party never happened. The next few years we travSo, this year, our eled around to different bars in traveling party the Full Throttle family, sort of machine was set spreading the joy. From time to up at Double D time we added different features to the party like deep fried on E. Mountain turkeys and chicken wings to Street in complement the oyster roast. At Kernersville. Choppy’s Den in Winston it was so cold, with howling wind and sleet, we had trouble keeping the fires lit on the cookers. Anyway, these are all in the history books: Plum Krazy, Iron Horse Saloon, Horsefeathers, Lucky’s, Locked & Loaded, Lone Wolf Tavern, Rider’s In The Country, Crazy Shots, The Office, and Bandannas to name a few. And who can forget the good times at Easy Eddie’s, Full Throttle Bar and Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken. All memorable Fear of February locations. Each had a different flavor and the weather was always a factor. So, this year, our traveling party machine was set up at Double D on E. Mountain Street in Kernersville. motorcycles began pouring in, the first round of oysters was coming out of the steamer and hotdogs from the grill. We had really cool 20th Anniversary T-shirts, shot glasses and koozies. The Deal of the Day prevailed as folks lined up for their shirts and raffle tickets on the flat screen TV and diamond heart pendant. BTW, the oysters were sponsored by Karney Law Firm and Smokin’ Harley-Davidson and the diamond heart pendant was sponsored by the King of Diamonds, Bruce Hayes of Lexington. The bar was full of folks enjoying the tunes cranked out by the band, Rukus, who please everyone with their mixture of southern rock music. Out back, more bikes and cars were parked and the folks had a fire pit going on and some brave souls tried their hands at the burn-out pit. We had a special opportunity at one of the band breaks to thank everyone for coming out despite the fog and mist, and thank our sponsors. Also, we invited to the stage all our Full Throttle sales reps that were there to be introduced to the crowd and we were pleased to show them off. At the next band break, we held our famous chugging’ contest and we had fifteen ladies and thirteen men to compete for bragging rights and a cool skull mug. Congrats to CJ from Horneytown on her ladies’ championship and Sean from Galax

Congrats to Tim for winning the pendant and to Tommy for getting the TV. These items disappeared immediately, I don’t know if the guys thought someone would take them or not. Anyway, there were some happy campers that evening with bellies full of oysters! I want to thank all the crew that worked to put this party on: Lincoln, Renea, Caroline, Lydia, Dawn, Lucas, and Maggie. Also, most of our sales staff pitched in, too to make it a really great day. Thanks to all that came out and partied. We all missed the Old Man, but he was with us in spirit and showed up in some pictures, too! Where are we going to be in 2019? I’m not tellin’, you’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, ride safe.

2018 Mardi Gras Party At Down Home Harley-Davidson By: Scott Wicker 2018 is getting started off right! In January, Down Home Harley-Davidson held their now famous Elvis’ Birthday Party! No doubt to a full house. In February, the fun continued with their Mardi Gras Party held on Saturday, February, 10th. The excitement started as soon as you walked in the door with Mandy or one of the other employees placing the traditional Mardi Gras beads around your neck to get everyone in the spirit of the occasion. New Orleans ain’t got nothing on Down Home. Specials were all over the dealership in every department. MoI was sweating torClothes® had 20% off selected just watching jewelry and Parts had 10% off all them eat all High Performance Parts installed at the Dealership. D. J. Big Boy those hot wings. was playing a lot of great music and trying to stump those in attendance with Harley-Davidson Trivia Questions. Great prizes went to all those that came up with the correct answers. The Blue Knights were there selling raffle tickets for various items to raise funds for Dominick, a young boy with a very serious illness. Representatives from Keller Williams Realty were on hand to display information about their services and they were also raffling off a gift card. Marcelle and Larry Prater prepared some traditional gumbo and corn bread for the occasion and it was SO GOOD! Saturday afternoon after the gumbo settled Down Home held a hot wing eating contest with wings provided by Buffalo Wild Wings of Burlington. 15 contestants took their places at a table almost as wide as the showroom. I was sweating just watching them eat all those hot wings. When all was said and done and the smoke had cleared, literally, John Wesson

was declared the winner. John will receive a year’s supply of Tum’s for winning the hot wing eating contest. Just Kidding! Congratulations John! We Would like to thank everyone at Down Home HarleyDavidson for their hospitality and for putting on another great event! Stay tuned! they only get better! Ride Safe! Photo by Mandy McGilli

Easyriders Bike Show 2018 Story by Alan Dockery Photo by Lincoln Infield This sure has been a long, cold Winter. There were lots of cool motorcycles and vendors across the Convention Center floor. There were antique and stock machines, too, so there was something for just about everyone who likes motorcycles. Plus, there were some old hot rod cars and trucks scattered around. Peoples’ Choice category. The vendors were busy all day selling those biker needs that ain’t always in stores. There were the usual vendors and some new ones this year. I should have made another pass through the vendors to see what I missed the first two times! Most of the show is bikes and vendors from this area. But Easyriders brings a big show that wrapped around the outside

of the floor. All day there was entertainment on the stage. Between bands, the Purrfect Angelz put on a show and did meet and greets. Lots of celebrities were there, either officially

or just digging the show. Michael Ballard from Full Throttle Saloon, was working hard for his fans. Billie Lane’s Sons of Speed Boardtrack racers were there. NTC Drift Trikes put on demos a few times. Overall, I think Easyriders brought a great show to Charlotte this year. It’s really all about the bikes. There were some awesome machines there. Great seeing y’all who stopped by The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine booth. We gave away all the magazines and goodies we brought. Congratulations to all the bike show winners.

New Rider Boot Camp At Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson By: Kris Weiss The motorcycle world can be intimidating. That’s why Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson hosts a New Rider Boot Camp every first Saturday of the month at 10:30am. Whatever step you’re in on your way to freedom, you’ll fit right in at this event. Everyone is made to feel at home with a warm cup of coffee and a Krispy Kreme Donut. The Raleigh HOG members help with the registration and take the time to introduce themselves, talk about the HOG chapter and get to know each person, setting them at ease. At 10:30 am the group is led to the conference room for formal introductions to the staff on hand and each participant shares about why they’ve come to the Boot Camp. Most folks share that they are looking to learn more about their spouse’s interest in motorcycling or they are looking to ride for themselves one day soon. Either way, the main goal is stated that the staff wants each person to leave feeling more comfortable around motorcycles than when they first arrived. After brief introductions, the class is taught about the different families of the Harley-Davidson line up. They learn about the different bikes and bike fitment and understand how each individual Harley family of motorcycle is meant to perform.

The next area of learning is the MotorClothes department. Knowing what to wear is important for a safe riding experience. From head to toe, the staff educates the group on what is to be worn and the reasons behind their choice to make sure that riding is fun, safe, and comfortable. Next, it’s on to learning how to pick up a motorcycle. A two-wheel motorcycle doesn’t always stay upright. Most incidents happen while the motorcycle is standing still. And unfortunately, motorcycles can fall over under many circumstances. After our instructor lets the motorcycle fall over, the first thing he does is to put everyone at ease. The natural tendency is to panic. The group is told to relax and not worry about the bike. The first thing to consider is yourself. Are you ok? Then, the staff member demonstrates the proper way of standing the motorcycle back up without injuring yourself. This is one of the most impactful lessons of the day and the class always walks away chit chatting about what they just witnessed. After giving away a few door prizes and the always coveted free Riding Academy class, the group moves on to the Jump Start. This is the motorcycle simulator. Each student gets the opportunity to ride a Harley-Davidson Street that is fastened to a fixed platform so that it is safe for a non-rider to operate. They are able to start it up, rev the motor, learn to use the clutch, and shift through the gears all while standing still. It’s invigorating for a new person to experience this. Once the class is finished and the attendees have been taught the fundamentals of motorcycles and riding the Jump Start, most want to go on to the next challenge. The next step for most people is the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy offered at Tobacco Road Harley-Davidson. This is a four day class that is two evenings of classroom instruction followed by two full days of riding on a closed course. Upon graduation, the student will be able to get their motorcycle license. Remembering Roger

Hiring New Bail Agents!

www.docbailbonding.com

By: Wally Wersching I met Roger Gera while I was in the Navy stationed in Norfolk, VA on the destroyer USS William M. Wood DD 715. He was a nineteen-year old ASROC (Anti-Submarine Rocket) gunners mate in the ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) Division. I was also in the ASW Division as a Sonar Technician. I searched for, and located the submarines then Roger sunk them with the ASROC. We never actually sunk one, but were very proficient in practice runs. We all worked well together. The ship was small, and eventually, I got to know everybody. The ASW Division usually stuck together, and watched out for each other. Roger and I became close, maybe it was because we were both from Every military the north side of Chicago. We holiday, and decided that on our next liberty, February 9th, I we would fly to Chicago to get my ’57 Chevy, and drive it back have a drink in to Norfolk, VA. It was against his honor, and the rules because it was way over remember the fun the maximum distance we were we had allowed to travel on a weekend pass. We went anyway. We flew military standby easily out of Norfolk to Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC, which is where we encountered a problem. All the planes were full. We went from airline to airline. There were no openings. We were just about to return to Norfolk when we found out about some possible openings on a Northwest Orient flight. We ran to the counter, logged in, and waited. After all the regular passengers got on, the flight attendant started calling the stand-bys. There were many ahead of us. We were last on the list, and we had our fingers crossed. The flight attendant finally called our names, and to our good luck, the only seats open on the plane were in first class. It was great! We had a good meal, a couple of drinks, and a very attractive stewardess. We landed in Chicago on Friday about midnight. We both took the same taxi from the airport – Roger was dropped off first. We agreed that I would pick him up on Sunday morning for the drive back to the ship. On Sunday morning, we started southeast towards Norfolk. Before we were out of the city, one of “Chicago’s Finest” stopped us for speeding – which we were. We pleaded our case, and showed him our military ID’s. He had a son in the Army so he let us go. Now we were off again, watching the speedometer more closely. In Indiana, we stopped for gas at a Plaza, and picked up another sailor (John) hitch-hiking to Norfolk. Now we were three! Along the way, we met a carload of attractive young girls driving to New York. We played silly driving games at 75 mph across Indiana and Ohio. They wanted us to stop for a while but we couldn’t or we’d be AWOL. It was a good thing that we picked up John. He knew some short cuts that saved some Continued On Page 32

Continued From Page 30 driving time. We got back to the ship late Sunday night, and didn’t get in trouble. It was an exciting experience I’ll never forget. It brought Roger and me closer together. Later that year, Roger volunteered for Viet Nam, and was transferred to a Navy gunboat patrolling the rivers. The next thing I heard was that he was wounded. The bullets went through the fiberglass boat, and got him in the chest. He was sent to Hines V.A. Hospital in Chicago to recover. Every time I came home on leave, I’d have a big party, and invite all my old friends. We all had a good time. Some people hadn’t seen each other since my last party. When I came home in June 1968, I called Roger to invite him to the party. Roger came with his fiancée - a beautiful girl who was his nurse at the hospital. He was an outpatient going in once a week for a check-up. His dad worked for the railroad, and Roger had a lifetime job with the railroad as soon as he was released. He showed me his scar (350 stitches in a crescent shape on his chest and stomach). He was lucky to be alive. It looked like he finally had everything going his way. I was sent to Adak, Alaska for a year, and when I came home in June 1969, I was planning another party. I called to invite Roger. His mom answered, and I asked for Roger. She said that he was dead. On February 9, 1969, his internal organs just stopped functioning, and he died. He was twenty-three years old. The party wasn’t the same without him. We were all talking about him, and drinking to his memory. Later when the Viet Nam War Memorial (“The Wall”) was

built, the Chicago Tribune printed a list of all the local people whose names were on “The Wall”. Roger’s name was not there. I called to find out why. Because he died in the states so long after his injuries, his name was not allowed to be on “The Wall”. This is upsetting because he died as a result of being in Viet Nam fighting for his country. His name should be on “The Wall” with his fallen comrades. Recently, I learned that if his family really wants his name on the wall, they can petition congress to add his name. (It takes an act of congress to add a name to “The Wall”) So far, they haven’t, but other families have added names of their loved ones over the years showing that it can be done. It’s been almost fifty years, and the memory of his face is becoming blurred because I don’t have a photo of him. I can still picture him every morning when he put in his contacts, and squinted for an hour before his eyes got used to the lenses. I can also still hear his laugh, and some of the things he used to say. Every military holiday, and February 9th, I have a drink in his honor, and remember the fun we had. Sometimes, I try to imagine what he would be like if he had lived. There is always a lump is my throat, and a tear in my eye. I’ll never forget my friend, Roger. I know that Roger is only one of the thousands who died because of the Vietnam War. I cannot imagine how our Combat Vets feel when they remember their fallen comrades. It must be difficult to relive those moments. They deserve our everlasting gratitude.

Tracy ( Bones) Perdue was a beloved Son, Father, Brother, Uncle and Friend. Tracy loved his dogs (his girls), Bella and Precious. He was a Mama’s Boy like no other. Everyone who ever met Tracy knew he loved to make people happy and was always making everyone laugh. His heart was his Harley, he loved his “Wind Therapy” as he called it and the more curvy the road the better he liked it. His biker brothers and sisters were his family. He loved his Riff Raff and Biker Trash Nation and they stood by him till the end and did an amazing, outstanding job, Tracy would have been proud of you all. We love you and will miss you.

Elvis’ Birthday Party 2018 At Down Home Harley-Davidson By Scott Wicker There have been a lot of interesting events going on at Down Home Harley-Davidson recently and on Saturday, January 13th, as usual, they out did themselves again. They held their 2018 birthday celebration for none other than the KING himself, ELVIS! The dealership was overflowing, to say the least, with Elvis fans and well-wishers. The Burlington H.O.G. Chapter had its Famous ‘Grill’n and Chill’n’ going on and members were volunteering to make sure everything was running There were all sorts of smoothly. There were all giveaways along with sorts of giveaways some good old fashion along with some fun. good old fashion fun. Probably one of the big hits of the day was the opportunity to win a new Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. A lot of people lined up to roll dice down a specially constructed table that looked like a small version of a bowling alley. Dice in a cup were CASH BAR ONLY • ATM AVAILABLE

marked spelling H-A-R-L-E-Y. Each dice had one letter on it that spelled HARLEY and if thrown down the lane and hitting the back board with the required letters facing up afterward, someone would win the new Harley-Davidson. Unfortunately, no one was able to make a throw with all six letters facing up. Several had two and three letters up but not all six. A roll off was done after everyone had one chance with those that had multiple correct letters facing up for some Great Prizes. DJ Todd was on hand playing a lot of great music including our old favorites. Down Home held a Blood Drive also which they do several times a year. Blood is needed probably more in the winter months than any other time of the year. There were lots of giveaways and the kids and grownups showed their skills in the Hula Hoop contest and the ladies and some of the men folk were struttin’ their stuff in the dance contest. Specials were offered in every department and I don’t think anyone left disappointed. The day would not have been complete without having an appearance by the Man of the Hour, ELVIS!! No, it really wasn’t Elvis himself, but folks this man was the closest and the best I’ve ever seen. He rolled off several of Elvis’ trademark tunes and had the girls front row center wanting to get closer to him and have their pictures taken with the KING! Hope Down Home has this event again. It was a big hit!! A lot of great events and happenings coming up at Down Home Harley-Davidson. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine will have all of the Events listed coming up in the Spring. Don’t Miss Them! We would like to thank everyone at Down Home HarleyDavidson for their hospitality and for another great event. Thanks to everyone that came out and supported Down Home Harley-Davidson and the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter. Stay Tuned! Remember! Ride Safe!

East Cooper ABATE 15th Annual Oyster Roast By: Panhead Ron, Events Cord. & Proud East Cooper Member On Sunday, February11, 2018, East Cooper ABATE held their 15h Annual Oyster Roast benefiting MotorcyMany Low cle Rights Country ABATE in South members were Carolina. The event started there to recruit new members and at 1:30pm at to let people know Richard’s Bar and Grill. As the real purpose in the past, behind ABATE of this year featured a $15 SC. admission for all you can eat oysters. There was also some other food available provided by Richard’s Bar and Grill. Live music was provided by Ocean Drive, the band rocked, the chics were dancing, and the best guitar solos were heard this side of the Mississippi!! The highlight of the day, besides the fellowship of bikers

from all over the state and beyond, was the People’s Choice Bike Show. Women’s bike show along with the men’s. A beer stein was awarded to first through third place both classes with the inscription of East Cooper ABATE People’s Choice Bike Show 2018. Done in old school fashion, the names of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners were asked to bring their motorcycles to the front of the stage for all to see and the loudest cheer won. Men’s 1st place: Victor Paul, 2004 Custom, 2nd place: Bubba Manucy, 2007 Ultra, and 3rd place: Mike Agin,1980 FXWG. This year by some unknown reason not one and I mean not one lady rode a bike to the oyster roast, maybe next year. Many Low Country ABATE members were there to recruit new members and to let people know the real purpose behind ABATE of SC. Through events like this our main purpose is to expose motorcycle riders to the positive impact ABATE of SC holds in this state. Many thanks to all of the East Cooper members and fellow Low Country chapters for their support and hard work to make this event such a success. The event committee has been a tireless leader for all of East Cooper ABATE events and this chapter would not be what it is today without their hard work and dedication to the freedom of the road. Hope to see you at next year’s Oyster Roast. We hope to have a few new contests in 2019, you might see a beard and tattoo show, stay tuned.

A Hero Gone Too Soon

By: Caroline The motorcycle community, Veterans, and folks all over the country were shocked and saddened to hear of the Dale personsudden passally knew the ing of Dale challenges that Beatty, on veterans faced February 12, 2018. Dale with fellow Veteran, John Gallina started Purple Heart Homes in 2008 to help disabled veterans and their families with housing issues. Based in Statesville, Purple Heart Homes gained national and worldwide recognition largely because of Dale’s infectious personality, which was as big as his smile. It was so popular that Dale was featured on the cover of Time Magazine and was named a Top Ten CNN Hero in 2013. Dale personally knew the challenges that veterans faced since he lost both legs in an explosion while serving with the National Guard in Iraq in 2004. However, that did not stop him from working tirelessly to promote this cause.

In the relatively short period of time the organization has existed, it has 300 projects in 30 states under its belt. On a local level, many of the area’s motorcycle groups regularly hold functions to help raise funds for Purple Heart Homes. For example, the Forgotten Sons MC in Clemmons have annual projects specifically for Purple Heart Homes, and Dale personally attends as many as possible to cheer everyone on.

BY: H.O.G. of Asheboro February 10th was the day set aside by the members of Harley Owners Group of Asheboro to hold their third annual Chili Cook Off and Blood Drive. Both events were successful. They had set a goal with the bloodmobile to acquire 25 pints and they surpassed that by acquiring 26 pints of blood. The main event, the chili cook off, was also successful with nine entries of chili with a first-place cash prize sponsored by Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group. First place winner, Brandon Goins, won a large trophy, $150 cash from McGrath, and a $100 gift card from Cox’s Harley-Davidson of Asheboro. Second place chili was won by LG’s Chili, (he never gives his name, always LG’s Chili), won a smaller trophy, and a $100 gift card from Cox’s. They also had a 50 /50 drawing that was won by John Springer who was not there to pick up his winnings, but presence was not required. In the end, $708 was raised and a portion of these funds will go to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. Thanks to all the participants who came out to support the efforts of H.O.G. of Asheboro.

Hi, I’m Marion Ayers (AKA- Lucky). I’m back with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine this year and I wanted to tell you a little about myself. I have been riding motorcycles since I learned how to ride a bicycle and my father kept buying them for me until I could start working. I started out trail riding because there were a lot of woods to ride In. I have a bunch of scars to show for it also just don’t ask to see them all. I have been to all the rallies in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Daytona Beach in my younger years and have established a lot of great friends along the way. I don’t do too many of the long rides since I was in an accident that left titanium rods, screws, and two artificial discs in my back. I do get out and ride as often as I can, though. I am the past president of the Wayfarers Masonic Riders Association, which I held for three years. We are probably the largest riders’ association in the United States. We also have chapters outside the USA. I look forward to great things to come with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and meeting all the great Brothers and Sisters along the way. Please feel free to contact me for any assistance. My E-Mail address is MarionAyers12@yahoo.com and I will give an immediate response. Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to work with y’all. Chili Cook-off At Smokin’ Harley-Davidson By: Caroline For the seventh year, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson hosted the Kids of Childhood Cancer Chili Cookoff. This is such a popular event at Smokin’ that even the cold rainy day on February 17, did not stop folks from voting on some of the best chili recipes in the area. They were certainly all good, but my personal favorites are the ones with big flavor and some spicy without being too hot. At 2pm, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson owner, Rick Perry announced the winners of this year’s competition. The ..even the cold rainy Peoples’ Choice winners were so close, there was literally day on February 17, one or two votes separating did not stop folks first, second and third place. from voting on some Team Vinnie won 3rd Place of the best chili reci- prize of $25. Team Smokin’ won $50 for 2nd Place, and pes in the area. 1st Place $100 went to Team Smokin’ Jones. Joe Collins won $95 for the 50/50 drawing with the other half going to Kids of Childhood Cancer. As many of you are aware, Kids of Childhood Cancer was created by the parents whose children were treated at Pediatric Oncology at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem. The organization supports families who have children going

My Favorite Old Honda Story and photo by Alan Dockery Let me tell y’all about my favorite bike these days. It’s a 1982 Honda CB 900 Custom. Yeah, I think factory customs are funny, too. But this bike has had more people want to talk about it than any I’ve owned and it is so much fun to But, Oh ride. Man, is my I liked this bike Big Japanese back in Girlfriend fun 1980 when to ride. it came out. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, had been through a couple Jap enduro bikes and old Harleys and wanted a brand-new motorcycle. I jumped to Harleys early and missed out on some of the little Hondas other folks had. Never rode a CB 750 before then. I hated them, because they were hard to outrun on my hotrod XLCH Sportster. I have a cherry 1976 F Model Super Sport now. Anywho, to prove I wasn’t prejudice, I went to all the other dealers in town to see what they had. Honda and Kawasaki had six cylinder machines that were impressive, but a little too much. The CB 900 was the next model down from the CBX and looked good. I rode one and really liked it. I got a good deal on the last 74 cubic inch basic Superglide in the showroom. The 1980 Eighty Inch bikes were out and

nobody wanted the 74. I did since I knew it could be a stroker really easy. Sure wish I still had that bike. The CB 900 stuck in my mind. Every time I saw one I thought, “Almost bought one of those.” Over more than 30 years of riding Harleys and smashing lots of old Hondas at rally bike bashes, I realized I do not care what anyone else thinks about what I ride. Long ago, I bought a Shovelhead FLT Tour Glide when the dealer had to sell them at cost just to get Continued On Page 52

rid of them. Back then, my buddies laughed at my Garbage Barge, as they filled the saddle bags with liquor, beer, and ice. Now most the bikes at the bar are low-mile dressers that never ride across country to a race or a rally. So, several years ago I started looking at every CB 900 C Model that came on the market round here. Some guys wanted way too much money for them. Claiming they are, “very rare.” I tell them rare does not make something valuable. Demand does. And folks did not want this bike when it was new and few of us want them now. Honda sold the six cylinder CBX and the Gold Wing above this model. The CB 900 came in two models. The C Model was the cruiser. While the F Model was the five speed, chain dive, light weight, sport bike crotch rocket version. I’d like to have one of those, too. They are valuable and in demand. For less money you could buy the CB 750 Custom and run almost as quick and fast, while looking just like this. The 900 Custom was also overly complicated. Saying a Honda is overly complicated is something since they all are. But the 900 C Model took it to another gear, literally. This is the bike some folks call The Ten-Speed Honda. It has a five speed transmission plus a two speed transfer case for high and low range. Honda used high and low range trans on lots of small bikes in those days. Low range for the woods and campgrounds, high for the road. Well, on this bike its, low range for drag racing, traffic, and curvy mountain roads with high range for the highway and better gas mileage. I use it more like a truck overdrive sixth gear. The transfer case served another major purpose in the development of this machine. Honda wanted to use that engine in a cruiser bike with shaft drive. So, the two speed transfers drive from the left side to the Gold Wing shaft drive on the right. I bet this thing has more than triple the moving parts of my Shovel Dresser. Besides all the gears and crap in that two speed, the engine is a mechanical nightmare. I’ve always said anybody can maintain a Shovelhead. Two cylinders, one carb,

one cam, pushrods, easy, peesy. The 900 motor has four cylinders, two cams, sixteen shim and bucket valves, four over-complicated carbs and nothing is easy to work on. But, Oh Man, is my Big Japanese Girlfriend fun to ride. She redlines at 10,000 rpm. Sounds so good going up through those revs. But gets kinda scary above 8,000. You better like where it’s pointed, because you are about to be there! The machine makes almost a hundred horsepower and weighs a little over 600 pounds. With me not revving high and hard she will do 13 seconds at about 100 miles an hour in the quarter mile. Some skinny young rider not afraid of blowing her up could probably get into the elevens and top it out over 130 at The Rock down. with half a mile of shut This old Honda is another example of what I tell folks about how they can enjoy antique motorcycles without having to spend lots of money. I bought this bike for less than a thousand dollars with fewer than 17,000 original miles. Looked good with an aged patina that is OK these days. After a trip to the Honda mechanic to check the valve train and carbs and get new tires, brakes, wheel bearings, etc. she has been a great rider. This is the bike that started me on buying too many other old Hondas. I have several stuffed around my Shovel dresser now. Japanese motorcycles are becoming more accepted in the antique bike world. The theme for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America Southern National Meet at Denton Farm Park May 18-19 this year is Japanese Motorcycles. I expect to see lots of cool old Jap Bikes riding around and for sale. If you have one to show off, sell, parts or looking to buy, come join us. I’m taking a 1985 Honda ATC 110 Three Wheel Little Red Death Machine for my campground cruiser. I hope to trade it for something I like better.

TE KIC

By: Caroline This year’s NFL Super Bowl 52 battle between the Patriots and Eagles was viewed by folks at Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken while eating some of the best wings in the state. This is not an exaggeration since Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken was voted by WXII News 12 as the number one best wings in the Triad for the Super Bowl. And, if that’s not enough, Southern Living featured it as one of the best chicken joints in the South. Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken did not disappoint this year with an all star menu featuring wings, poppers, with their “tongue tickling” sauces and loads of sides. To wash it down, all beer was $2! One thing is for sure, even if you happened to pull for the Patriots, you were with a winning bunch of people and enjoying a winning chicken feast. You know you don’t have to wait for Super Bowl or any other event to enjoy the great atmosphere as well as the food. Located at 4695 S. Main Street in Winston-Salem, they are a popular spot for locals to eat lunch as well as dinner. Don’t forget that warm weather is almost here so their bike nights on Thursdays will soon be starting up. Charity motorcycle runs continue to make Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken a favorite stop. I am sure the folks at Ted’s Kickin’ Chicken will have lots of great events coming soon. Be sure to watch for these as well as menu specials in the coming year by checking out the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and their website at TedsFamousChicken.com.

boro, he chose to receive it there. The stage was set in the Service Department of HarleyDavidson of Greensboro, complete with a congratulatory banner hanging behind the brand new 2018 Harley-Davidson XL1200X ‘Forty-Eight’. Reade Fulton, Sales Manager at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro was on hand for the presentation as well as the Marketing Manager Richard Johnson and several service personnel. Full Throttle was in the house by invitation to record this happy occasion. Bill arrived with his son, Charlie and a great big smile on his face. He stated he was ecstatic! He said that after he saw the notification online, he received a call from the Visa folks; he thought it was a joke! He uses his HD Visa all the time and besides the motorcycle, he had some HD Rewards card to spend in a Harley Dealership. He happily obliged us and sat on his new ride for photo ops and said he was going to ride it home. Reade Fulton, Sales Manage at H-D of Greensboro, told him the bike was cleaned and completely set up with a full tank of gas. The Dealership also took care of all the fees except for the tag fee of $79. What a deal – a new Harley for under $100! Bill admitted to riding motorcycles when he was a young man and then quit for years, coming back to the sport five years ago, first with a Super Glide purchased from Harley-Davidson of Greensboro. He currently rides a Street Glide. When all the paperwork was finished and a temporary tag affixed to the bike, Bill and his broad smile rode away from the dealership with his son following in the truck. I expect we will see Bill and his new ride on the local streets as well as his favorite stomping grounds at the beach and Outer Banks. Have a great time, Bill, and ride safe.

of the car. The driver, a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulls over and gets out to see what has become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit is the Easter Bunny, and he is dead. The driver feels so awful that he begins to cry. A beautiful blonde woman driving down the highway
sees a man crying on the side of the road and pulls over. She steps out of the car and asks the man what’s wrong. “I feel terrible,” he explains,” I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny with my car and killed him.” The blonde says, “Don’t worry.” She runs to her car and pulls out a spray can.
She walks over to the limp, dead Easter Bunny,
bends down, and sprays the contents onto him. The Easter Bunny jumps up, waves its paw at the two of them
and hops off down the road. Ten feet away he stops, turns around and waves again,
he hops down the road another 10 feet, turns and waves, hops another ten feet, turns and waves, and repeats this again and again and again and again, until he hops out of sight. The man is astonished. He runs over to the woman and demands,
“What is in that can?
What did you spray on the Easter Bunny?” The woman turns the can around
so that the man can read the label.
It says..
(Are you ready for this?)
(Are you sure?)
(Last chance)
(OK, here it is)
It says,
“Hair Spray Restores life to dead hair (hare), and adds permanent wave.” I went out drinking on St Patrick’s Day, so I took a bus home. That may not seem like a big deal to you, but I’ve never driven a bus before. I took my dad to the mall the other day to buy some new shoes, (he is 92). We decided to grab a bite at the food court. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors: green, red, orange, and blue. My dad kept staring at him. The teenager would look and find him staring every time. When the teenager had had enough, he sarcastically asked, “what’s the matter, old man, never done anything wild in your life?” Knowing my dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response, knowing he would have a good one. In classic style, he did not bat an eye in his response: “Got drunk once and had sex with a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my son.”

s e k o p S & s e k o J A biker left for work one Friday afternoon. Instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend riding and partying with the boys and spending all his wages. When he finally got home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his very angry wife. After two hours, she stopped nagging and said: “How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?” He replied: “That would be fine with me.” Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. Thursday, the swelling went down just enough for him to see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

Kearney and his wife, a middle-aged couple, went for a stroll in Phoenix Park, Dublin, last week. They sat down on a bench to rest. It was then they overheard voices coming from a secluded spot. Immediately Mrs. Kearney realized that a young man was about to propose to his beloved. Not wishing to eavesdrop at such an intimate moment, she nudged her husband and whispered, “Whistle and let that young couple know that someone can hear them.” Kearney replied, “Whistle? Why should I whistle? Nobody whistled to warn me!”

What’s Happening Bros and Bro-ettes Here we are already in the month of March. What has changed for you so far, this year? Have you gone back to your old ways or still trying new stuff? Some people don’t like changes and want to keep everything the same way. The New Year hasn’t been here long enough for us to mess up enough that we can’t change. It’s like a new beginning. It’s still not too late for us. we have the opportunity to make life better for ourself and for others. If we look back at last year and the years past, do we like what we see or do we see things we would change or undo? Yet looking forward we have a chance to change things and make a better life. We can start with a clean slate with which God gives us a chance to change our lives and live for Him. He gives us the opportunity to ask for forgiveness and to live for Him. I’m not going to say it will be a bed of roses, but you’ll have someone to walk with you through the good times and bad times. I want to be on the right track when it comes time to meet Jesus Christ. If you’re tired of the way things are going in your life, don’t hesitate to ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart. Ask him to save you and make you clean inside and out. You won’t be sorry, but if you don’t like it, the devil will always take you

back. He doesn’t want you happy to start with. Phil 3: 13-14 Brethren I do not count myself to have apprehended but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. I press forward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. If you’re looking for something better in your life just say the Biker’s Prayer and except Jesus into your life. You’ll never be alone and you will always have the best friend that won’t leave you and always be there for you. In His Wind Ms. Pat

As I talked to some of the folks who knew him best I heard stories of a guy that was always down to get out and ride, to participate in as many events as he could and a friend that was constantly trying to make his friends laugh. There was a $5 cover charge that went to Tracy’s family along with a portion of the total sales from the event. The entertainment started off with Crazy Guitar Dave & Steve Pegg pulling off some good ole classic rock tunes. To help bring in more funds there was an auction of items ranging from a treadmill, helmets, leathers, and even a Dale Earnhardt Sr. cardboard cutout. The auction had plenty of participation with Steve Pegg doing the auctioneering and Crazy Dave providing background riffs, the auction ended up bringing in over $1000 for the cause. That’s pretty awesome y’all. The Dylan McCray Band brought the night home playing tunes and keeping the toes tapping. It was a gathering that I feel sure Tracy would have enjoyed and showed the magnitude of support that the biker community has for its brothers and sisters.
