The San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with our city’s vibrant business community, ensuing that our community, located in the heart of bustling Orange County, remains an exciting and welcoming place to visit, live and operate a business in for many years to come.

For 100 years, the Chamber has remained a vocal proponent of the city’s businesses and citizens. Much like our beloved San Juan, the Chamber has

a colorful history. In the early 1920s, visionaries such as Father St. John O’Sullivan, known as the great Mission restorer, Carl Hankey, John S. Malcom and a coalition of local leaders tirelessly championed the construction of Ortega Highway, today connecting Orange and Riverside counties. While hard to grasp now, this project faced fervent challenges at the time. Nevertheless, their unwavering determination prevailed, and Ortega Highway was completed in 1933.

Today, we remain committed to advocating on behalf of San Juan Capistrano’s residents, long-standing family businesses, nonprofit organizations, budding entrepreneurs and corporations across all industries.

We’re also dedicated to making sure you get the most out of your visit by providing resources, such as this guide brimming with stunning photos and insider’s information on all things San Juan Capistrano.

On behalf of the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce, welcome!

Marriott? Lyft or Uber rides move you about town with ease.

Your local exploration begins on Camino Capistrano. The city’s downtown thoroughfare is home to the iconic Mission San Juan Capistrano, charming storefronts, galleries and salons beside welcoming cafés, eateries and watering holes. SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO | WEEKEND

For dinner, San Juan’s bustling culinary scene doesn’t disappoint. Grab a table at Bloom Restaurant + Bar, an intimate, Mission-fronting eatery in a retrofitted 1930s brick structure, the town’s first city hall. Dine on wine-country-inspired comforts of home. Nearby, Ysidora Restaurant & Lounge pays homage to the Mission’s matriarch, Ysidora Foster, by inviting guests to relax and indulge in Spanish flavors. At the nonchalant L’Hirondelle Restaurant, French and Belgian tastes whisk guests away to dreamy, OldWorld haunts while diners at El Adobe de Capistrano are immersed in 200-plus-yearold San Juan history.

DAY TWO

For breakfast, brunch or just to lounge with a refreshment in hand, head over to Breezy for sunrise-infused eats, like the colorful ube pancake stack, acai bowls, crab Benedict or smoked salmon toast. Over at Ellie’s Table, fuel up with grab n’ go palm sandwiches, salads, decadent baked goods and craft coffees.

Hitch a ride east to Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park and spend the morning hiking the park’s varied terrain and keep an eye out for wildlife among oak and sycamore strands. For guided tours of local flora and fauna, pay The Nature Reserve at Rancho Mission Viejo a visit. If you brought your two-wheel ride to town, make a pit stop at Buy My Bikes for a tune-up before hitting local trails. The paved path of San Juan Creek Trail leads to the birthplace of Southern California surf culture, Doheny State Beach, while hill-hugging trails wind hikers and bikers up to summits with breathtaking views.

Back in town, let local brew masters be your guide. Experience diverse beers from around the globe at The BrewHouse, a tucked-away, brewery-style pub pouring 30+ craft creations from tap, bottle and can. With or without humans’ best friend, (kids, too), taste off-the-wall flavor experiments with clever names at The Dog Pawrk Brewing Company. Enjoy pinball, live music and delicious bites from a lineup of local food trucks, too!

Take some time to unwind before hitting the town for dinner, drinks and, if you’re so inclined, a show or dancing. Whichever local hotel you’ve chosen, this is your chance to lounge poolside. If you’re staying at Inn at the Mission, find your balance with regenerative therapies at Spa at the Mission. For other invigorating, yet relaxing treatments, seek out a relaxation session with Taralai Thai Massage or The Massage Associates.

Rested and rejuvenated, it’s time to hit the town. Looking for a hip hangout? Head to Rooftop Kitchen + Bar for a seasonally inspired, and changing, menu, craft cocktails,

great vibes and scenic San Juan views. If it’s vibrant, home-inspired flavors you want, feast on BASANTI Indian Cuisine’s enticing fare. This South Orange County gem prepares rich butter chicken, delicious momos, abundant curries and beyond. Family traditions also live on at Ricardo’s Place. Take a seat at the Beas’ family table for recipes hailing from Mixtlán, Mexico, where matriarch Grandma Juana’s delightful dishes made gatherings memorable.

DAY THREE

Don’t rush your last day in town. With the pace set, cruise over to The Tea House on Los Rios for a tantalizing high-tea experience showcasing specialty loose leaf teas, fresh-baked scones and light bites. Bountiful benedicts, custardy quiches and garden-filled frittatas shine on the weekend brunch menu. For mid-morning favorites infused with the bold flavors and vibrant ingredients of Mexico (think tres leches French toast, sopes benedicts and tamarindo mimosas), Sol Agave is the ultimate brunch destination. Historical wanderlusters will delight in discovering San Juan Capistrano’s rich past. A living relic to bygone days, take your time wandering the Mission’s serene gardens, 1700s adobes, ruins of the Great Stone Church and inspiring Serra Chapel. For local lore, stop into the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society’s Los Rios-set O’Neill Museum. This history tour continues at Putuidem Village, an interpretive park where the ancestral village of the Acjachemen once stood. Here, replica kiichas, small domeshaped structures made of willow and tule, give a glimpse into the Juaneño way of life. At the Blas Aguilar Adobe Museum and Acjachemen Cultural Center, explore the lively eras of San Juan’s past.

Before catching your train, unwind at Rancho Capistrano Winery, pairing locally crafted reds, whites and roses with seasonally inspired plates. Or eat trackside at the setin-a-train-car Paddy’s Station Irish Pub for casual bar bites, Ireland’s favorite meals (Shepherd’s pie and corned beef) and an icecold pour. Mission Cafe

An Inspiring Legacy

Journey through decades of history and lore at Mission San Juan Capistrano, where the past inspires the present.

California Landmark No. 200 is a living vestige of the past. The seventh of Alta California’s 21 Spanish missions, Mission San Juan Capistrano has witnessed, and inspired, nearly 250 years of life in San Juan Capistrano. Established on All Saints Day, Nov. 1, 1776, the Mission would later be heralded as the “Jewel” of California’s missions because of its magnificent Great Stone Church. The church, built by the region’s Indigenous people — the Acjachemen — would suffer extensive damage in the earthquake of 1812 but its ruins remain. Today, the church’s ruins still stand as a source of inspiration for those visiting the Mission grounds.

To truly experience the historical significance of San Juan Capistrano’s cherished Mission, embark on a guided, audio or self-led wandering tour. Here, you’ll discover the interwoven histories of San Juan Capistrano’s past as you visit the Mission’s vibrant gardens, exhibit-filled museum rooms and historic sanctuaries. Plan your visit at missionsjc.com.

FARMERS MARKETS & STANDS

From its now gone ranchos to miles of planted barley, walnuts and citrus groves to the Mission vineyards that laid the roots of California’s modern wine industry, agriculture is woven into the fabric of San Juan. The city’s cultivation traditions live on today. On Fridays, the familyowned Farmakis Farms welcomes the community and local growers, artisan bakers, fromagers, craft vendors and more to its weekly farmers market. Echoing the charm of roadside stands, The Ecology Center’s aptly named Farm Stand offers a remarkable variety of seasonal (and locally grown) fruits, flowers and vegetables alongside thoughtfully curated pantry staples, artisanal breads and more. Get the ultimate farm-to-table experience at the Farm School on Los Rios Street and reconnect with the simple joys of life: cooking and gathering.

Rooted in Advocacy

Recollecting 100 years of San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce community engagement.

Week after week, Carl Hankey went before the Orange County Board of Supervisors or traversed long miles through the winding Santa Ana Canyon to meet with Riverside officials. He pressed on for years.

“Five years is a lot of time to push,” the prominent rancher, citrus cultivator and school board member recalled in the 1960s. Decades earlier, he had grown weary. But despite the great demands of his young family and work to make his orange groves pay, Hankey forged on to make Ortega Highway a reality.

Today, the scenic Ortega Highway, a 27-mile stretch of State Highway 74 named for the early-Spanish explorer Jose Francisco Ortega, is a vital connector of Orange and Riverside counties.

“It seems strange today that there could have been opposition to the building of this road,” Frances N. Smith, then secretary of the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce, penned in a 1961 letter to the Los Angeles Times. “But there was and much of it bitter.”

In the ’20s, weary residents and an unsupportive county supervisor had actually encouraged the project’s desertion.

A local alliance, however, saw the project’s potential. Every week they chipped away reservations. Mobilizing around other worthwhile projects, the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce was born in 1923.

THE EARLY DAYS

Town banker R.W. Whitaker served as

president. Bill Otstot, who owned a drug store at the Capistrano Hotel, was its vice president. The man who built what’s known today as Mission Promenade — once called El Peon Plaza and housing Mission Garage, the Coastline Dispatch and Whalen’s Café — Ferris Kelly was treasurer. The remainder of the founding board reads as a who’s who of San Juan in 1923. Directors included Hankey, J. S. Malcolm, C. L. Congdon, Walt Congdon, Dr. Paul Esslinger, O.J. Guilbert, F.A. Stoffel and the great Mission San Juan Capistrano restorer, Father St. John O’Sullivan.

Years later, Smith detailed how members of the first installment of Chamber leaders worked tirelessly to change the minds of opponents, ultimately succeeding to see what was once “a primitive trail, often only to be traveled on horseback, washed out by floods in 1916, and never repaired,” become a highway.

During Ortega Highway's construction, the Chamber would stage weekend events to keep downtown viable. They’d also take on town beautification. At the time, the Chamber purchased 200 palm trees and sold them to local residents for $1.00 each — ultimately making no profit on their sales. To this day, many of these palms still tower over San Juan’s older neighborhoods and its La Matanza and Los Cerritos streets.

Though making progress on what was dubbed the Elsinore-Capistrano Road,

challenges in naming the project persisted. Enter Father O’Sullivan. Together, he and Hankey pitched an idea: Name the roadway Ortega Highway. Their plan worked like a charm. From that day on, their greatest support came from the once-uncooperative Fifth District Supervisor George Jeffrey, whose wife was a direct Ortega descendant.

The Chamber’s unwavering work in those early days led Orange and Riverside counties to raise 50 percent of the project’s cost. The state of California would fund the project’s other half and the $750,000 Ortega Highway project was eventually completed in 1933.

Then, and now, the Chamber exemplifies collaboration, perseverance and foresight.

THE CRASH & RESURGENCE

“Unfortunately, at the height of the Depression, the bank failed, and many local businesses followed,” wrote local historian Jan Siegel in her long-running Moments in Time column for The Capistrano Dispatch. “After the completion of Ortega Highway, the Chamber of Commerce disappeared in town.”

However, some iteration of the organization has always been active in San Juan.

In 1948, local businessmen formed a luncheon group that would become the San Juan Capistrano Business Men's Association. Paul Phelps, Bart Conners and Harold Smith were among the group’s early leaders.

Art Morria, Fred Newhart, Eugene

| SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE | SANJUANCHAMBER.COM 30
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO | CHAMBER

Streit, William Steele and Charles Ruerup followed as presidents. The group’s earliest achievement came in 1950, when they successfully brought streetlights to town.

From this work, the Chamber was officially revived. The year 1956 would see the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce incorporated. Stan Geach served as its president. Larry Hernandez would follow with the organization’s sights set on rezoning downtown and creating a publicity plan to attract tourists.

Bill Webb’s term as president aimed at beautification and a demonstration of civic pride. In 1959, the Chamber hired artist Otheto Weston to maintain an early California look for the buildings in town.

Then came the first of the annual Swallows Day Fiestas under Fulton Shaw’s direction. In 1960, the Chamber launched a fullscale incorporation study that eventually led San Juan Capistrano to incorporate into Orange County in 1961. Jose Rosan was head of the Chamber at the time. Two years later, then-Chamber president Gerald Gaffney encouraged the establishment of an independent Historical Society. Today, 60 years later, the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society remains a steadfast keeper of the past.

“For the past 100 years, the Chamber of Commerce has played an important role in every important aspect of our community’s growth,” writes Siegel. “For the past 75 years, that role has been continuous.”

The San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce remains a passionate network of local businessowners, employees, leaders and residents working together to promote local commerce all while striking a balance between the city’s economic prosperity, the local way of life and San Juan Capistrano's colorful history.

Over the last century, the Chamber has been instrumental in nearly every aspect

of San Juan Capistrano’s continued growth. The 1-5 Ortega off-ramp project back in 2013? The Chamber was involved just as its founders helped bring Ortega Highway to life 90 years earlier. And much as it was in the late 1940s, the Chamber remains committed to the redevelopment of downtown, which in recent years has seen the La Pata extension’s completion, opening of Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano and the relocation of Ganahl Lumber Company.

When former CEO Mark Bodenhamer took the Chamber reigns in 2011, “there was a general consensus the downtown was struggling,” he recalled in 2017. “There were a lot of empty storefronts.” New eateries and shops, as well as a new Mission San Juan Capistrano gateway would help revive the area. In 2018, George D. Peppas III would

assume the Chamber’s executive role as president and CEO. Through the dust of new construction, and bumps along the way, Peppas and the small, dedicated staff of Chamber employees, committed Board of Directors and steadfast members have, along with the City and its residents, weathered many challenges.

As San Juan’s vibrant small business community navigated recent years’ worldshifting events, the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce once again rose to the occasion. The Chamber and City worked collaboratively to accommodate more outdoor dining. The Chamber worked with the Small Business Administration to assist local businesses with loan applications. The Chamber strengthened its regional partnerships with the formation of the Coalition of California Chambers Orange County. It continued hosting its essential networking events, supported San Juan’s lineup of annual festivals and helped spread the word far and wide that residents and visitors alike needed to #VisitSJC to discover all its wonder.

Now, the Chamber looks to the next 100 years of San Juan Capistrano’s prosperity.

A special thank you

to local historian Jan Siegel for her continued dedication to telling the histories and colorful tales of San Juan Capistrano’s people, businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Member Benefits

EXPAND YOUR NETWORK

At the Chamber, we believe — and have experienced firsthand — how pivotal business and community partnerships drive innovation, expand industry knowledge, enhance the quality of work and life, stimulate economic growth and spur the progress of San Juan Capistrano and its surrounding communities.

Explore the potential of new connections! Join us for a casual evening mixer or lunch local to network with local business leaders.

The Chamber hosts a lineup of signature events bringing together San Juan’s residents, visitors, businesses and regional leaders. These events encompass but are not limited to our Installation Dinner & Awards, State of the City, Holiday Mixer and Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo lead-up events. Our dedicated staff and board members can also assist local businesses with celebratory ribboncutting, opening and anniversary celebrations to commemorate grand openings and major milestones.

AMPLIFY YOUR REACH

With a Chamber membership, businesses are guaranteed many highly effective ways to reach a wide audience. Chamber members are exclusively

featured online at sanjuanchamber.com, in regular Chamber communications and in this yearly publication, the San Juan Capistrano Visitor’s Guide and Business Directory.

The Chamber also doubles as the city’s official visitors center. Each day, our staff fields inquiries from visitors seeking out San Juan Capistrano’s best places to shop, dine and explore. Our recommendations are exclusive to Chamber members. What’s more: Chamber members also have the exclusive benefit of displaying their brochures, menus, fliers and business cards at our downtown office and events.

A Collective Impact

Coalition of local organizations amplifies the unified voice of Orange County businesses.

We believe bringing people together is the most impactful way to drive change.

In forming the Coalition of California Chambers of Orange County (CCCOC), an alliance of leading business advocacy groups, local chambers of commerce and business associations, the voices of local business and community leaders are being unified — and amplified — to bring about changes that benefit everyone in the region.

Working collectively, the Coalition is enacting positive change,

advancing policy, securing access and promoting inclusion to benefit businesses in Orange County and beyond.

We’re on a mission to equip business leaders with the skills and insights needed to advocate for their individual, community and industry needs. Together, we are paving the way for Orange County’s brighter future. Learn more about the Coalition’s work at: cccoc.info.

Join Project3R™ in Keeping Our Beaches Beautiful.

In 2012, a three year old San Juan Capistrano boy with a passion to recycle and clean up his local beach started what would later become a global awareness movement known around the world as Ryan’s Recycling.

Hundreds of beach clean ups later and with nearly two million cans and bo les recycled, Ryan Hickman founded Project3R™ with a goal to support community clean up projects and started the Partners for our Planet School Programs. These unique hands-on programs have been successful in inspiring classrooms of kids of all ages to protect the planet.

Project3R™ is dedicated to making a real impact in Southern California and around the world by growing recycling awareness and providing environmental education but Ryan could use your help. Please consider supporting Project3R™ by texting GIVE to (949) 594-1550 or learn how you can get involved at one of his next community clean up events.
