Congratulations Kathy Holman on being named the Grand Marshal of the 2025 Swallows Day Parade in San Juan Capistrano. Kathy has dedicated her life to preserving and promoting the city’s rich equestrian heritage, both as a stable owner and through her nonprofit organization, Otra Mas. Her unwavering commitment to the community and its traditions is truly inspiring. We thank Kathy for her leadership and lasting impact on San Juan Capistrano.

Friends and neighbors,
Please join us this coming Saturday, March 22, for the 65th annual San Juan Capistrano Swallows Day Parade. Nowhere else in South County can you fill your family’s day with history while meandering through the Mission, find a city filled with culture while chasing a cowboy, and finding delicious local flavors, from President Nixon’s favorite enchiladas to River Street’s newest ice cream.
You don’t need to dress up, but with this year’s theme of “Lassos and Lace,” things could get interesting. Make your journey easier while trying something the kids will enjoy: our free trolleys have various pick-up and drop-off locations outside Downtown.
We’re looking forward to spending the day together. Isn’t this town great?
Troy Bourne MAYOR San Juan Capistrano
2025 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
We are honored to present the 65th annual Swallows Day Parade and Mercado Street Faire. Our team has worked tirelessly for the past six months to bring these events to fruition. I couldn’t be prouder of the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association!
If you attended last year’s parade, then you know what happened. We still pulled it off, had a great day, and spent the next six weeks drying off. This year, we are crossing every opposable appendage to ensure smooth sailing on Parade Day.
I would like to thank the city of San Juan Capistrano, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and the Orange County Fire Authority. Without your assistance, this simply could not be done. Our sponsors are so greatly appreciated. I know everyone has had to tighten their belts because of the economy. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support.
Every year, I remind our stellar Fiesta Association members and volunteers to stop at some point in the day and behold what they have created. It’s a good feeling being part of something bigger than yourself and an even better feeling when it is for the benefit of the community.
If this seems fun to you, please consider joining us to help produce the 2026 festivities.
Thank you.

A VISITOR’S GUIDE
TO SWALLOWS DAY
Annually, without a doubt, the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano. The migration rings in the historic day when locals and travelers take in the Swallows Day Parade in March, bringing a breath of life onto the streets and businesses along the route.
Celebrants at the parade enjoy the diversity of cultures and organizations. Food and drinks are aplenty as are horses trotting through the city, meeting friends old and new.
This year marks the 65th annual Swallows Day Parade for this South Orange County city. For many, this event marks the
return of the flighted birds, but also a time to join in the community and celebrate a yearslong tradition with one of the last non-motorized parades in the United States. The parade and the Mercado Street Faire on Saturday, March 22, are part of the Fiesta de las Golondrinas, or Festival of the Swallows. The festivities will be in Historic Downtown San Juan Capistrano, filled with many restaurants and businesses. The parade starts promptly at 11 a.m.
To ensure the enjoyment of all who partake in the event, here are some helpful tips.
EVENTS
THE MERCADO STREET FAIRE
Before the parade, guests should swing by the Mercado Street Faire, which offers a mélange of vendors selling western wear and food. Live country music will be featured as well. The faire is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Historic Town Center Park on El Camino Real. There is a family entertainment and kid’s play zone, along with vendors.
THE SWALLOWS DAY PARADE
Saturday’s main event, the vibrant parade, kicks off at 11 a.m. The parade awards follow at 2 p.m., back in the Historic Town Center Park during the Mercado Street Faire. The tradition of the parade’s non-motorized entries continues with horse-drawn floats, carriages, wagons, and plenty of music and demonstrations. Downtown hosts a variety of presentations.
STAY IN SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO AND ENJOY THE CITY
As the festivities close, it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop in the growing city of San Juan Capistrano. Downtown offers a variety of restaurants, antique shopping, and quiet spots, including Los Rios Park. Visitors should stop by the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Swallow’s Inn, the latter of which serves adult beverages and Western music.

KATHY HOLMAN 2025 GRAND MARSHAL
The grand marshal for the 65th annual Swallows Day Parade is a lifelong resident and well-known community member. Leading the parade, Kathy Holman, founder of Otra Mas Horse Rescue and Equine Therapy, will make her parade debut.
Her family — including her son, his wife, two grandchildren, sister and daughter — will accompany her.
“I’ve been in the valley all my life and lived up in Capo Beach. I’ve been in San Juan with my horses since the ’60s,” Holman said. “I’ve been active in the horse industry in San Juan all my life, and I think that was what Jim was looking for this year: Someone who was active in the horse community.”
Holman has dedicated her life to the equestrian community and others who seek happiness through horse therapy.
“My love for horses has been in my heart for as long as I can remember,” she said.
“As a young child, I’d go to my aunt’s house and groom the ‘picture ponies’ who lived next door to her. I’d spend hours brushing and cleaning the ponies just to be close to them. Later, I hung around the local stables, offering to clean stalls, brush the horses, or feed — anything to be around them.”
Holman and her husband, John, established Otra Mas in 2013 to restore horses’ mental and physical health. Otra Mas provides shelter, rehabilitation, and training for serviceably sound horses. Their goal is to pave a smooth road for these horses and provide a safe haven so that they do not suffer in their later years.
The Otra Mas team works with foster care families, the Boys & Girls Clubs, cancer warriors, recovery homes, veterans, sports teams, corpo-
rations, and individuals just looking to live happier and healthier lives.
Holman has also owned and operated Ortega Equestrian Center since 1980.
“I’m not a celebrity, and I would rather stay under the radar, but it’s such an honor to be named the grand marshal,” Holman said. “I’m so humbled, and it has been amazing.”
The designation is important to Holman, as she had watched the parade since the early ’70s, when her family moved to the area. She has ridden horseback many times previously and helped the DVMs at the parade assembly area. She is excited to participate in all the festivities that take place the month before the parade.
“It is just so fun, and I love all the activities in San Juan,” Holman said. “San Juan has changed a lot, but this event has become an important time that brings everyone together. There are so many wonderful people in San Juan, and there are so many nonprofits that will get to be shown off at this event.”
As one of the equestrian leaders in San Juan, Holman admires the horse-driven parade’s longevity.
“The parade is so much fun, and they gather everyone,” Holman said.
“It gives the horses a moment, and as it is a horse-only parade, it just takes a moment to appreciate our history. It’s so important to the city, too, because it’s a monetary drive for the city too, and we all want to see the city maintain its equestrian lifestyle.”

SWALLOWS DAY PARADE THE HISTORY OF THE
Dating back to the 1950s, the Swallows Day Parade has evolved from a school carnival in the 1930s to the signature event of San Juan Capistrano’s friendly and charming vibe. It’s also historically important.
A small and passionate group of residents came together in 1958, first as a committee to the San Juan Capistrano Businesses Council, the predecessor of the San Juan Chamber of Commerce.
Original events consisted of an equestrian parade, a trail ride and a Western dance. Activities have come and gone, but the parade is still an enduring feature central to the revelry and celebration. The parade remains historic, as it is one of the nation’s largest non-motorized parades and draws interest worldwide.
Given the growth of the activity schedule, the importance of a single organization to oversee the events became clear — hence, the volunteer group was dubbed the San Juan Capistrano Fiesta Association in 1987.
Other civic organizations have since linked with the SJC Fiesta Association, giving rise to the monthlong Fiesta de las Golondrinas, or Festival of the Swallows.
The SJC Fiesta Association also pays
tribute to the city’s Spanish, American Western, and Juaneño Indian heritage through the seasonal events, in addition to heralding the return of the swallows.
The SJC Fiesta Association is also integral in welcoming new residents to San Juan Capistrano, as the area continues growing. Through volunteer opportunities and promoting the town’s legacy, transplants and longtime residents develop a keen sense of pride for living in this pretty and tight-knit South Orange County community.
The city solidified the SJC Fiesta Association’s importance to the community in 1995 by proclaiming it the lead coordination organization, with approval rights, for all Fiesta de las Golondrinas events.
The parade was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic — the event’s only postponements. When the parade returned in 2022, it had no horses, due to an equine brain virus outbreak, and instead allowed motorized vehicles for the first and only time. The year 2023 saw the return of the horses.
Anyone interested in joining the SJC Fiesta Association is welcome to become a member and contribute to the history of San Juan Capistrano. Visit swallowsdayparade.org for more information.
MS. FIESTA AND SENOR SAN JUAN 2025
For the 65th annual Fiesta de las Golondrinas season, San Juan Capistrano community members Aurilia and Tony Leone. As Ms. Fiesta and Senor San Juan, they represent the Fiesta Association with a combined 26 years of service.
“ The Leone family has been involved in San Juan Capistrano since the late ’50s. Regarding the Fiesta Association, the Leone family probably has over 150 years of service to the association,” Tony said. “My brother has 44 years, my father had 45, and this is my 21st year being involved.”
Although Tony has lived in San Juan Capistrano for only six years, he has been a member of the Fiesta Association since 2004. He has participated in the association but has not officially served as a board member.
“ I’ve done almost every job for the Fiesta Association, and I used to fly from Massachusetts out here just to help put the parade on,” Tony said. “I am probably the farthest traveled member, 2,999 miles.”
Aurilia has not been involved for long. A former Indio resident, she has only been part of the Fiesta Association with Tony for a year. She loves to provide for people in need, and was named the Salvation Army’s volunteer of the year in Northeast Florida in 2012.
“ I love to cook,” Aurilia said. “I catered for 50 people for last year’s Christmas party and the weekly meetings. I love to cook and try to make everybody happy with their tummies. I’ve always loved helping people and have said that if we were to win the lotto, I would buy a soup kitchen and help get people fed.”
This will be Tony’s second time as Senor San Juan and Aurilia’s first time as Ms.
Fiesta. Tony’s family has a long history of being officially part of the parade.
“ My father has been Senor San Juan, my brother’s been Senor San Juan, my sister has been Miss Fiesta, my sister-in-law has been Miss Fiesta,” Tony said. “Now, Aurelia gets to be Miss Fiesta, and this is my second time being Senor San Juan. It is always a huge honor to be part of the parade in this way, especially with my family legacy.”
The volunteer-driven couple met two years ago and married last year. Guests were entertained with the couple’s favorite activity: karaoke.
“ We officially became a couple on the 5th of October in 2023, and then a year later, on the 5th of October, we married at the same table we met at,” Aurilia said. “Gianna, a frequent karaoke singer at Hennessy’s, is also a minister, and she married us last year.”
Aurilia and Tony admit to spending six out of seven days doing karaoke together if they can. Aurilia’s favorite song to perform is “Delilah” by Tom Jones.
Outside of volunteering and singing, Aurilia is a housekeeping manager for the San Clemente Inn. Tony was a retired Massachusetts union carpenter and is now employed with Aventura Sailing in the Dana Point Harbor.
MAP & EVENTS
Hoos’Gow Day
(9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 21)
The streets of San Juan Capistrano
On this day, it’s best to wear Western attire or accessories; otherwise, you might end up in “jail!”
Costumed members of the Fiesta Association, known as the “sheriff” and “deputies,” roam the streets in search of city slickers — those unfortunate enough to look like they need time in the Hoos’Gow — or any man who is clean-shaven. Jail sentences are brief for those who can make “bail” by donating to the Fiesta Association.
Frog Jumping Contest (4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 21) Los Rios Park 31791 Los Rios Street
The annual Fiesta Association’s frog-jumping contest is an opportunity to gather for entertainment, win prizes, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of Mark Twain, who may share stories about the original frog-jumping contest in Calaveras County.

2025 JUNIOR DIGNITARIES
ROSELYNNE ESPINOZA AND JACOB MENDOZA
Roselynne Espinoza and Jacob Mendoza are the 2025 youth representatives for the Swallows Day Parade. Both are very excited to participate in this annual San Juan Capistrano event.
Eleven-year-old Roselynne enjoys learning math and practicing her art skills during school at Del Obispo Elementary. She also admits she loves playing volleyball and soccer during school. When she is not in school, she loves taking her dog for walks around the neighborhood, playing at the park, and going for a swim to cool down from the San Juan heat.
This isn’t Roselynne’s first time going to the parade; she loves to go and see it every year with her family. She is very excited to return this year as Miss Fiesta, talk with everyone in the crowd, and help represent San Juan Capistrano while making her family
proud.
Jacob, who is 11 1/2 years old, loves participating in PE and band, where he plays the clarinet daily at Kinoshita Elementary School. When he isn’t in class, he enjoys playing outside with his friends, particularly soccer.
Jacob is thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in a titled position during the Swallows Day Parade, though he has been in it before. He says he will be proud to represent the Boys and Girls Club, as not many kids get the opportunity to do this. He will be excited to see his parents in the crowd rooting for him on the big day.
2025 TEEN AMBASSADOR
LYLA BRADSHAW
The 65th annual Swallows Day Parade has named Lyla Bradshaw its second teen ambassador. The 15-year-old Laguna Niguel resident, who attends OCASA College Prep, said she is honored to hold this title.
“ I was very excited, and it’s an incredible honor to be chosen for this,” Lyla said. “I’m truly excited, along with my family, who were thrilled for me and have supported me on this journey.”
Lyla’s mother, Leanna, has been involved with the Fiesta Association for
over 10 years, serving in various roles like vice chair and chair of the Taste of San Juan. Leanna introduced Lyla to the Fiesta, giving her the opportunity to participate in many events. “ I’ve been volunteering with Fiesta for around five years now,” Lyla said. “I’ve helped with events like the concerts in the park and the Mercado on Swallows Day.”
Lyla also volunteers with organizations like Homefront America and The Field of Honor, hosted by The Mission San Juan.
“ I help fill backpacks for back-to-
school and bake sales at Oceanside Elementary School, which is on the Marine Corp. base,” Lyla said. “I have also helped with The Field of Honor, greeting people visiting.”
Besides volunteering, Lyla enjoys art. Last summer, she started taking pottery classes, but also enjoys crocheting and reading.
THE FIESTA ASSOCIATION
Who are all these people running around wearing their cowboy hats, black vests and white shirts adorned with an old-time sheriff badge? They act like they own the place!
Well, we don’t own it, but we have been fortunate enough to be allowed to borrow the town for a few hours. The Fiesta Association is the organization tasked with being the lead agency in producing the annual Swallows Day Parade. It is an all-volunteer army numbering almost 200 souls in membership. We hold monthly meetings during the off season, April to December, and then in January we kick in to high gear and meet weekly until the end of March.
We have an amazing group here, and we would love to have you join us. We not only produce the Parade and Mercado Street Faire, but also the eight events that lead up to the big day. There is something for everyone. If you are looking for some place to donate some of your valuable free time and efforts, we hope you will give us a shot!
Please visit our website at www.swallowsdayparade.org.
Or stop one of those folks you see on parade day wearing their black and whites and ask them about us.
Just don’t do it on Hoos’ Gow Day if you are in your traditional business attire. You might just wind up behind bars for a great photo opportunity.
2025 KIDS’ PET PARADE
KIDS’ PET PARADE BRINGS MANY ONLOOKERS, TOUGH COMPETITION
The annual Kids’ Pet Parade and Animal Rescue Expo in February was, once again, a huge hit with everyone who showed up at Los Rios Park for one of the most popular events during the Fiesta de las Golondrinas, leading up to St. Joseph’s Day and the Return of the Swallows and then the Swallows Day Parade.
The parade brought together kids, parents and their favorite pets, with kids ages 5-12 competing with their furry friends for recognition in various categories. It was a real dog and pony show, so to speak.
All six of this year’s winners will be marching together in the Swallows Day Parade on Saturday, March 22: Ella Tegin with her bird, Daisy (pet bird); Noah and Gabi Cota with
their dog, Chewbacca (team costume); Sergio Prado with his dog, Homer (Young at Heart); Denna Moosawi with her bearded dragon, Hoosang (exotic pet); and Elise Helsel with her dog, Marshall (domestic pet).
The event set an unofficial world record for the cutest photos taken.
