Commencement Speech: Colton Marantz
Before I begin, I just wanted to show my appreciation toward our new principal, Mr. A., the teachers who brought us here, the staff who supported us, and most of all, you guys, the Class of 2025.
As we stand here looking back on the past four years of our lives, I bet many of us are asking ourselves, “What were we first thinking when we entered into high school?” I remember thinking, myself, my freshman year, right before lunch, “Where am I going to sit?” Also, “Why are seniors so tall?”
I’m still wondering that.
But, maybe the better question that we’re now asking ourselves is, “What are we thinking as we prepare to leave? Many of us are heading to college, trade school, the military, the workforce, and yes, some of you are greatly venturing into the world of social media. Good luck.
But before we go, I want to leave you with one last question, something the great Bob Marley once asked, “Could you be loved?” But what is love really? Love is pulling the door open for someone, but it’s also slamming the door shut on your best friend’s face just to mess with him.
Love is giving up your lunch when someone else needs it — and yes, stealing a fry off your best friend’s plate, because what’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine.
Love is FaceTime your grandma out of the blue, even when she doesn’t know how to flip the camera. “Grandma, it’s on the bottom left side of the screen. How am I looking at the TV?” And it’s deeper than that.
Fellow seniors, love it’s showing up when it’s hard, when it’s inconvenient, when it costs you something, it’s always hard. Love is choosing compassion over pride, listening and not judging, choosing people even when it’d be easier not to love isn’t just a feeling or a moment. It’s a way of living, it’s presence, it’s patience and it’s grace, and maybe that’s why it matters so much. When everything falls apart in our lives, love holds it together. It gives meaning behind both success and failure. It gives strength behind every real connection we’ve ever made. It makes the hard conversations worth having. Now, I have to get something off my chest. For years, I’ve heard Bob Marley say, could you be loved, like be it full time.
Could you be the one who brings light into the room just by being yourself? Could you be the reason someone feels seen, known, or even valued?
So Class of 2025, wherever you go and wherever you are, whether you choose to show love to our school. We should always choose to be loved, because I truly believe this class could be love.

San Juan Capistrano Mayor Troy Moore. Trustee Lisa Zollinger. Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Smalley. Assistant Superintendent Brad Shearer. Principal Abedzadeh. Teachers, parents, families and fellow seniors. Class of 2025 — we are finally here.
Over the past few months, we have had many lasts: the last sports game, the last school dance, the last concert and the last joke of the day. Only four short years ago, all of us looked forward to high school with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. How do I find my classes? What electives should I join? Where should I sit? How can I fit in?
The truth is that was not the right question. There was never a need to fit in. Each of us found a place we belonged. True belonging does not require us to change for the sake of others. It means being accepted for who we are.
Throughout my San Juan Hills experience, I have found a place of belonging in the performing arts. Along with being able to sing with the amazing people in our choir, I also had the privilege of performing in our orchestra these past four years.
Even though our large orchestra fills the vast stage of the amphitheater, each instrument plays an essential role by contributing its unique sound, texture and color to bringing the music alive. No matter how much we practice, a flute can never be a trombone, a trombone can never be a violin, and a violin can never be a snare drum, and it doesn’t have to be. In our orchestra, I found a place where I belong and developed my viola skills by collaborating with other students to create rich and dynamic music, varying from the intense, bombastic works of Russian composer Tchaikovsky to Claude-Michel Schönberg iconic “Les Misérables.”
While some of us may not have participated in instrumental music, many of us found belonging during our time as stallions, through sports, through dance, through writing for the Express, through ASB and through forming and joining clubs.
When my friends and I started the club Jaden Rocks Kindness to foster a sense of belong-
ing, we were touched by how many students came out to support our club mission, a testament to the spirit of belonging at San Juan Hills.
Our campus is a community where differences strengthen our connections. Athletes support theater productions, teachers attend orchestra concerts and clubs collaborate across causes. Despite diverse interests and passions, we show up for one another, learn from one another and celebrate each other’s successes. Just like instruments in a symphony, our unique talents create something greater together. Everyone is seen, everyone is valued and everyone belongs.
Just as we did four years ago, we once again find ourselves standing at the threshold of a new beginning. Class of 2025, as we drive out of Stallion Ridge for the very last time, let us continue to create spaces of acceptance wherever our paths may be, because that is what it means to ride for the brand at San Juan Hills: to foster a spirit of belonging where kindness leads the way.
Shaurya Sharma Graduation Speech
I’d like to start this speech by listing 25 things I’m sad to leave behind at the school.
No. 1, the H building, especially those bathrooms. So many memories, most of them unsanitary.
No. 2, the car line, nothing like waiting 40 minutes in traffic, just a rolling lane.
No. 3, false fire alarms. This one was my personal favorite.
No. 4: zero period, because there’s nothing like starting school at 7:11 in the morning in AP literature and compositions. Because who doesn’t want to be analyzing metaphors half asleep? I didn’t feel like writing the other 21 out. But I think you get the idea.
Just kidding, but really, behind all of the sarcasm and late bells and group projects gone wrong, there’s something I’m going to miss a lot more us, from our first awkward days as freshmen trying to find the B Building to our final walk off campus as seniors, this place became more than just a school. It became a part of who we are.
But standing here tonight, I realized something, I spent too much time worrying about what comes next that I hadn’t always appreciated what I had right in front of me the years I once counted down are now the ones I wish I could hold on to just a little longer, because this wasn’t just high school.
This was our last ride together, and that ride through wins, losses, heartbreaks, laughter, late night, study, crimes and parking lot chaos is what brought us here. It was never perfect, but it was ours. Each of us will go our own directions now, college careers, the military chapters, some of us still aren’t sure yet, and that’s OK too, but wherever we go, we’ll always carry the Stallion Spirit that brought us here. And that brings me to something important: Our school motto ride for the brand. Some may think it’s just a phrase on a banner or slogan screamed at pep rallies, but we know better.
Living by the brand means showing up for each other, not because someone told you to, but because that’s just what stallions do. So yeah, maybe we didn’t win every game. Maybe the vending machine still eats your dollars more than it gives you snacks. None of that changes what it means to be a scout, because we rode for that brand and we never held that you it, and now that ride continues So Class of 2025, as we saddle up for the next journey of our lives, college, work, wherever the trail may lead, do it the way we’ve always done it, with courage, with heart, with loyalty. Ride for something, stand for something. Keep writing for the brand, and you’ll ever forget the ones who have been with you since day one, right here beside you. So tonight, let the next part of the journey begin. Actually. Excuse me. It’s already begun.

Happy 60th Anniversary Medicare: 1965 to 2025
In July of 1965 the legislation creating Medicare as well as Medicaid (for lowincome individuals) passed in Congress and was signed by then President Lyndon B. Johnson.
However, Medicare services took a while to get started. On July 1st, 1966, roughly 19 million individuals aged 65 and older began receiving their Medicare benefits.
Medicare beneficiaries have options on how to receive their Medicare health benefits. Many of my clients use Medicare as their primary insurance (it pays 80% of their expenses to put it in the simplest of terms). For someone to be protected from the uncovered 20% of medical expenses that has no out of pocket maximum, we add a Medicare Supplement plan (usually Plan G) to their coverage. These types of plans, also referred to as Medigap plans, were passed into law by congress in 1980. In 1997 the Balanced Budget Act
introduced a very impactful addition to the Medicare health insurance offerings. These plans are referred to as Medicare Part C or otherwise known as Medicare Advantage plans. In 1999 private insurance companies began offering Medicare Advantage plans.
By 2003 there were over 40 million people enrolled in Medicare. At this time, Medicare prescription drug coverage didn’t exist, and many seniors were paying very high costs for their prescriptions, and some were unable to afford to pay for their prescriptions. Congress then acted on expanding Medicare to cover prescription drug benefits, and Medicare Part D was introduced.
On January 1, 2006, Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans) began providing benefits to Medicare beneficiaries
Beginning in 2007, Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes had to
start paying a higher monthly premium for Medicare Part B and an assessment added on for Part D coverage. This is called IRMAA: Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount.
In 2010 the Affordable Care Act, signed by President Barack Obama, made most preventative care services free for Medicare beneficiaries.
The Inflation Reduction Act was
signed into law in August of 2022. This is the beginning of several enhancements to Medicare prescription drug coverage. Beginning January of 2025, the amount that people with Medicare Part D coverage will pay annually for prescriptions is capped at $2000. There are more enhancements for Medicare Part D and Part B drugs in the coming years.
