San Juan Hills High School Class of 2024
BY NIKKI IYERTassels were turned, diplomas were disbursed, and caps were tossed in the air at San Juan Hills High School (SJHHS) on May 30, celebrating the graduating Class of 2024. The commencement ceremony included speeches by Scholar of Scholars Melanie Hui, ASB President Carson De Filippo, student Danica Robertson, Principal Dr. Manoj Mahindrakar and Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees Vice President Michael Parham.
Senior Class President William Meshkin led the Pledge of Allegiance, and student Anna Lisa Gnielinski sang the National Anthem. The SJHHS Chamber Singers performed the “Star-Spangled Banner,” the SJHHS Alma Mater and a rendition of “Yesterday” by The Beatles, conducted by teacher Michael Ushino.
Associate Superintendent Bob Presby, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Cary Johnson and Parham handed out diplomas to students on stage. Teachers Robert Lynde, Jamie Gonzales, Jane Gideon and Kathy Boggio were chosen by students to announce the names of the graduates.
In her address, Hui acknowledged the complex emotions of graduation – a blend of excitement mixed with feelings of confusion and uncertainty.
“Graduation is a huge change, and it is very easy to feel lost and not know the next step of your journey. However, for the first time in our educational careers, we have the freedom. We have the freedom to choose what we truly want to do,” Hui said in her speech.
Hui further encouraged students to embrace authenticity and live fully in the present moment.
“No matter where you are in life, you will look back on your high school years and absolutely cringe at some of the things that you are doing right now. So as my good friend likes to say, ‘You might as well accept it, and be cringe and free,’” Hui said.
Similarly, student speakers expressed their thoughts on what it means to be a Stallion.
“The Class of ’24 has proved that being a Stallion is staying tough through the hard times, overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles, and constantly finding ways to better those around us,” said De Filippo.
Throughout his speech, Mahindrakar emphasized the importance of human connection in defining success, and expressed his confidence that the Class of 2024 will make a positive impact
on the community and beyond.
“You can and you will make it; you’re capable of incredible things, and I have no doubt that you will go on and make a profound difference in this world,” he said.
This year marks Mahindrakar’s fourth and final year at SJHHS, as he transitions to work at Aliso Niguel High School next year.
“You, Class of 2024, are particularly special to me. We started San Juan Hills together, and we’re going to be leaving San Juan Hills together,” Mahindrakar said. “The past four years, I’ve had the immense privilege of serving at this wonderful school. And in that time, I’ve witnessed all of you grow, and each one of you have become remarkable individuals.”
At the end of the ceremony, led by Meshkin, the seniors turned their tassels to signify their graduation.
“Don’t forget where your roots were planted, and always be proud to be a Stallion,” Robertson said in her speech.
Dr. Manoj Mahindrakar’s address to the Class of 2024
BY PRINCIPAL DR. MANOJ MAHINDRAKARWe’ve been together for four years, so you guys came in in 2020, and I think, for me, four years have gone right by. You, Class of 2024, are particularly special to me. We started at San Juan Hills together and we are going to be leaving San Juan Hills together.
As an educator and as a parent, this day means so much. It is the fulfillment of a promise we all made to you. Every teacher, every counselor, every staff member, when we work here, we make a promise that we would guide, support and celebrate your success and cheer you on to move forward to the next significant step in your future. So today, my heart’s filled with mixed emotions. First and foremost, pride. You guys make me so proud. A touch of nostalgia and bittersweetness. The past four years, I’ve had the immense privilege of serving at this wonderful school and in that time I’ve witnessed all of you grow, and each one of you have become remarkable individuals. Today we celebrate not just a culmination of your academic journey. That is so important. But there’s a lot more to happen here than just that. We celebrate human connection to leverage our lives. I think it’s these connections that truly define our experience. The friendships you force, the mentors you found and the community you build all are a testament to the power of human connection. And that became really important from when you started, to when we’re walking out together. Remember these bonds that will carry you through the challenges and triumphs of life. I don’t want to dismiss the many, many achievements here in the classroom, sports, fields and stages, because they’re significant and well-deserved. Like our theater department winning first place at CETA and many awards at the JRAYs and MACYs. Our choir program being recognized as one of the top choirs in the western United States.
We have over 30 athletes committed to play in college. We have our surf team winning three years in a row as state champs. We have our very own senior, Taylor Fox, winning CIF diving championships three years in a row. I’ve been told that we might want to keep our eyes out at the Olympics for her someday in the future. We have our baseball team winning its first league championship in school history. We have our orchestra winning the best orchestra at the Cappies, JRAYs and MACYs. And really, the list could go on and on. And if I left anyone out, that’s because I don’t want the speech to be 10 minutes long. But you know what you did here, and your family knows what you did here, and your friends know. And that’s just a small example.
But on top of all these amazing accomplishments, I honestly believe as a principal and an educator, the friendships and connections that support and provide for each other will be just as, if not more, enduring. In our time together, I’ve seen countless examples of your kindness, compassion and dedication to service. Whether it was through community projects with AVID, club Interact, Link Crew, or through your churches or houses of faith, or helping a friend in need or simply just being there for each other. You demonstrated that true success is measured not just by personal achievements, but by the positive impact we have on those around us. And I hope as you step into the next chapter of your lives, you hold on to the spirit of service. Continue to give back to support and uplift others. In doing so, you’ll find fulfillment and purpose far beyond any personal or team accolade. I hope you can end each day thinking to yourself, “Who did I help today?” And I hope the examples are plentiful. I would say that’s a successful day.
Family has always been a cornerstone of this school. And by family, I mean not just those that are related to you by blood, but also the family you created here. You’re a part of a special, kind and supportive family that will always be with you, no matter where life takes you. Cherish these relationships. I think they’re your foundation. Stay connected with your family, both old and new, and let that love and guidance be the constant in an ever-changing world. And as I prepare to move on to a new school, I carry the lessons you guys taught me and memories we’ve shared. Each of you has left an indelible mark on my heart and I’m immensely grateful for the opportunity of being a part of your journey. Though we may be parting ways, know that my thoughts and well wishes will always be with you.
The BRAND is enduring. It means so much more than a slogan; you know this better than any-
one. I thank each of you for representing our school, your families, and most importantly yourself so well. So, graduates, as you venture out into the world, remember to embrace the connections you make, to serve others with kindness and compassion and to treasure your family. There’s a lot the world tries to tell you that is important, but in my experience, I’ve yet to find anything more worthwhile and enduring than the connections we make with each other, your family and the support you can provide each other. And I share, don’t fall for the myth that getting ahead means being ruthless, cunning and mean. I don’t believe that. The people that I witness that get ahead and stay ahead are those that help and bring others with them. And for some reason, if you’re not where you pictured you’d be at this moment in time, it’s OK. Your story’s not done yet. I’d encourage you to ask for help, invest in yourself and recognize that success is not a straight line. It’s not one-size-fits-all. You can and you will make it. You’re capable of incredible things but I have no doubt that you will go on and make a profound difference in this world.
So congratulations class of 2024. Thank you for being extraordinary. Thank you for putting San Juan Hills back on track. Thank you for remembering and R.F.T.B. The world is a better place because of you. Thank you.
Scholar of Scholars Speech
BY MELANIE HUIGood afternoon, Dr. Bob Presby, Trustee Parham, Dr. Johnson, Dr. Mahindrakar, teachers, parents, families and fellow San Juan Hills students. I want to start this off with a quote from “Young Sheldon.”
“The term valedictorian comes from the Latin word ‘valedicere,’ which means to bid farewell.”
The thing about bidding farewell is that it tends to signify the end of the line, the end of a journey, the final scene of a movie or adventure.
However, I find the term a tad misleading, because the truth is nobody really wants to peak in high school. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for our entire academic careers. The shiny cap, the gowns, the walking across the stage with a diploma in hand waving hi to our parents along the way.
We’ve grown up in a time of coming-of-age media sensationalizing and even romanticizing high school as the best years of our lives. I remember learning about teen romances from Rory and Jess in “Gilmore Girls” or the toxicity of anxiety and peer pressure from “Euphoria,” or even the annoying nature of cliches from basically every 2000s Disney show. Even in middle school, there’s things scrolling on my phone. You’d see reel after reel after reel of high school parties, football games, dances, everything.
The way that everybody made it seem – high school is the last hurrah before plung -
ing headfirst into the draft of adulthood. However, unlike the ending of “High School Musical,” the highs of life do not end after graduation. We’ve had some fantastic times in high school, to be sure, but if the absolute peak of your character development is happening at the same time as CAST testing and lunch detentions, then you need to take a serious look at your introspective journey.
We, Class of 2024, have our whole lives ahead of us to build off of the people that we are right now. Twenty to 30 years from now, you might be working in like a large business forum in New York. You might be surfing the waves every morning for your 9-5. You might even be waking up early to open your small cottage-core bakery in the woods. No matter where you are in life, you will look back on your high school years and absolutely cringe at some of the things you are doing right now. So, as my good friend likes to say, you might as well accept it and be cringe and free.
Graduation is a huge change, and it is very easy to feel lost and not know the next step of your journey. However, for the first in our educational careers, we have the freedom. We have the freedom to choose what we truly want to do. This sense of uncertainty signifies the newest episode in the sitcom of our lives. Now, Young Sheldon may be a genius, but his implication that graduation is the end of the line isn’t totally correct. Everybody has moments of farewell in their lives. But to us, graduation is merely the key to a new beginning. Thank you.
Carson De Filippo Graduation Speech
BY CARSON DE FILIPPOHello, parents, distinguished guests, family members, and Class of ’24. Congratulations to our graduates for succeeding in your pursuits and making it here today. You all look amazing, and it’s unbelievable that our whole grade finally dressed up for a spirit day.
It’s crazy how fast these past years have gone by.
I still remember back in eighth grade when we used to dream about high school with our friends. You’d be sitting at lunch hearing stories of the spirited football games, the “dance circles” at homecoming, and you’d start to wonder things like “What should I wear on my first day? Who will I sit with at lunch?”
Little did we know on that first day of high school in 2020, we’d be wearing pajamas and eating lunch on the couch with our parents.
The timing of COVID-19 was unbelievable.
Without a doubt, our class faced unfortunate circumstances. We were forced to “learn” online and hardly stepped foot on the San Juan campus. But leave it to the Class of ’24 to find a way to persevere. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, we rose through these circumstances and turned unbelievable into unbelievably amazing.
After entering a school that had lost parts of its culture, as sophomores we redefined what it meant to be a Stallion through demonstrating extreme resilience and passion for the brand. Even though we did not do this through dressing up, we filled the stands at sports games and had the largest attendance at school dances sophomore year.
Even this year, we’ve demonstrated the unbelievability of our class.
My ears are still ringing from how loud our student section was after Colton Chase caught the game-winning touchdown to beat Tesoro with 7 seconds left in the game.
We saw a record season and a league title from our girls basketball team led by Sydney Peterson and Aryanna Hudson.
Our baseball team, with five senior college commits, won the first league title in school history.
Our performing arts have put on some of the best award-winning productions we have seen, ranging from “Crazy for You” with Jacob Koclanis and Annalisa Gnielinski to the amazing band concerts that featured solo performances from Tim McElroy and Mason Leykauf.
Even our virtual enterprise program led by Nikita Karande, Taylor Doane, and Wiliam Meshkin made nationals for their virtual business.
That’s unbelievable.
And now it is unbelievable that we are all sitting here today.
Take it all in, Class of ’24.
We are sitting in the very chairs that we’ve dreamed of for four years.
Now, we probably dreamt that they were a little more comfortable, but that’s OK. This is it, Stallions. You made it.
All those long nights of studying and even longer nights of finishing procrastinated homework paid off.
Class of ‘24 proves that being a Stallion is staying tough through the hard times, overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles, and constantly finding ways to better those around us.
We are an unbelievable class.
Look at the person to your right and left.
These are people who we’ve grown with these past four years, made unforgettable memories in and out of school, and now we are all about to go our separate ways and accomplish goals that we can hardly dream of.
For one last time, we get to sit together and call each other classmates.
I can’t wait to see the amazing and unbelievable things you will all accomplish in the future. And that’s it for my graduation speech stallions, have a fantastic future and never forget to ride for the brand.
Danica Robertson Graduation Speech
BY DANICA ROBERTSONWelcome, distinguished guests, Dr. Mahindrakar, parents, teachers and most importantly the graduating Class of 2024. Congratulations, we did it: 13 grades, 2,340 days. When we started kindergarten, we were all given a username. Twenty-four, last name and our initials. Twenty-four? Whoa! That’s a long way from now. Well, little did we know, it came a lot faster than we imagined. As an eighth-grader, we heard about all the amazing perks of being in high school. We couldn’t wait to get out of middle school and RFTB, whatever that means.
The Class of 2024 had a different freshman year. Navy and gold cohorts, sitting on Xs during lunch, not seeing a single senior as we were the only class that came back to school in person. The halls didn’t buzz, as it was always quiet.
We got gypped of our first year in high school, so we made sophomore year count. Our class packed the Badlands every Friday night to cheer on the Stallions at the top of our lungs. We got our first dance experiences at the Back to the Future Homecoming and Great Gatsby Winter Formal. The Class of 2024 never missed an opportunity to ride for the BRAND and show our school spirit and pride.
We were able to give back to our community by applying to prestigious clubs like National
Honors Society, CSF and No Place for Hate.
As juniors, we were ready to drive ourselves onto Stallion Ridge, hopeful to get the best spot in the J lot. We were determined to ride for the BRAND not only on the court, field or stage, but also in the classroom. Although we got clash of the classes winner stolen from us, since we obviously had the best video, we still RFTB’d. We were more ambitious than ever to earn the grades that we deserved, and our standards were set so high that we never settled for less.
We had our eyes set on big dreams and college decisions.
Senior year, we experienced all of the last.
The 24 from our kindergarten username finally came. The last football game, the last musical, the last dance show, the last lunch in the quad, the last time driving up La Pata and the last time cheering for our Stallions on the fields, pool, stage and courts.
All of us are now walking away from campus ready to conquer the real world.
Knowing the meaning of the BRAND, we can apply it to our lives as graduates, creating the most powerful legacy. We taught ourselves and showed other classes how to be resilient and make comebacks that seemed impossible.
As we go our separate ways and make an impact in the world with our talents and creativity, don’t forget where your roots were planted and always be proud to be a Stallion.
