Here are some stories from some of our newest John Snow Graduates of what they plan to do next...
Following three great years at Durham University and John Snow College, I and many other graduates will be moving into the world of work in the coming months. I am sure that the activities many of us have undertaken in college such as Frepping, sports and societies, and Exec roles will help us succeed in our chosen careers. During my job search, it was clear that employers are interested in what you have done during your time at University, in addition to your studies. Therefore, whilst our time at College has been impacted by very unusual circumstances, finding time to support the college in any capacity will help you in more ways than it seems.
After completing many extensive, virtual application processes, I finally obtained a job at EY in Financial Services Assurance in London.
It is a move that diverges significantly from my degree in Geography, however, I am really excited to try something new. I was drawn to accountancy in particular because it offers an excellent route into a career in finance, the opportunity to meet lots of new people and the option to study for professional qualifications which enhance my degree. Having spent my final year applying for a variety of jobs, my word of advice is to not be discouraged if you are rejected. It is an extremely competitive jobs market, but it is important to back yourself, be confident and trust that your time at University makes you an attractive prospect for many companies.
I wish everyone else graduating from John Snow the best of luck in the future for whatever you wish to achieve and I hope to be able to see some of you soon once restrictions have eased.
I grew to absolutely adore Durham over my 3-year course in Psychology and I am extremely thankful that I chose Durham above anywhere else. Being at Durham and in John Snow College not only gave me the opportunity to grow and learn new skills but gave me the confidence to put myself out there and get involved in things I’d usually be too shy or scared to do, such as being Female Welfare.
My ‘next step’ is completing a Masters in psychotherapy which specialises in creative approaches for which I’m going to use my artistic talent to help people and support vulnerable individual’s wellbeing. Undoubtably, Durham has had a huge hand in securing me this opportunity and allowing me to pursue a career as a psychotherapist.
