from: Mary Hopkin SPOKANE - Hsin Huang captured her third consecutive title on the Northwest Women s Pool Association tour at McQ s Billiards in Spokane June 21-22. Huang, a Taiwan native currently living in Vancouver, BC, won $570 and a paid entry into the WPBA Canadian Classic. The tournament was sponsored by McQ s and RT9 Designs, a New York company that designs billiard art and clothing. RT9 owner Linda Pault donated $500 plus a set of four prints and a letterman s jacket for the NWPA to raffle. Pault, who lives in New York, spent the weekend sweating the matches in Spokane as 48 women from Canada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wisconsin battled for the WPBA spot. I love the competition at this level, Pault

said. It s very intense. The tournament action was certainly intense and entertaining for the spectators who watched the competition over the two days. Press coverage from the Spokesman-Review and two local television stations helped bring in more than 40 spectators to watch the two-day tournament. Hsin Huang cruised through the winners bracket comfortably, with wins over Debi Welfringer, 7-5; Julie Burney, 7-1; Julie Valdez, 7-5; Jo Woodward, 7-5; and Mona Remedios, 7-3 before meeting Katherine Czarkowski, also of Vancouver BC, in the finals. Czarkowski beat Morgan Steinman, 7-5; Linda Carter, 7-4; and Andrena Brown, 7-4; before losing to Mona Remedios, 7-1. But Czarkowski came back through the losers bracket with (NWPA continued on page 7)

BCA 8 Ball Challenge Big Sky State Games Hosted by Seven Feathers

Written by: Stephanie McManus (Karpins) CANYONVILLE, OR On June 13th through the 15th, Seven Feathers and A-n-B Vending put on the 1st Annual BCA 8 ball Singles Event. Danny and Penny Burdick from An-B Vending were the tournament directors and the people who helped set up this great event. 40 tables were brought in and neatly setup before 7pm on Friday when Mixed Scotch Doubles was scheduled to start. Scotch gathered 32 teams; quite a few came from E u g e n e , Springfield, Roseburg, Grants Pass, Redmond, Bend, Klamath Falls and even parts of Northern California. Many players and even Mark Fenn & Patty LaMontagne the casino were impressed on how well this whole event was being run for the first time the only thing I heard from people that the tournament should have a masters division, but to me the open singles in the men s and women s division was considered masters and novice division was compared to be a regular open division. Scotch began at 7pm with everyone playing their first match. Each match was a race to 3 and the matches played until they had to be stopped so the casino can close the convention center area at 1am. So play had to continue to the next day, but some of the players that made it to the next had to work, so Danny told them they could continue their matches when they came back after they got off work. Scotch resumed play at 5 o clock on Saturday and the (l to r) Ami Tibbets and Patty LaMontagne team to make it through everyone, was Fenn/ LaMontagne. They went through Harris/Cassle, Boggs/Boggs, Bloom/ Harrison, McDonald/Vaughn, Robbins/Robbins and then again Robbins/ Robbins for the final. Fenn and LaMontagne had no problem getting through their opponents and took 1st place in the Scotch Doubles Event. Saturday came around and it was time to start the singles events. Women s and Men s Novice Division started at 8:30am, and the Women s and Men s Open began at 10:30am. 16 women signed up for the novice, 13 in the open, 50 in the men s open and 27 in the men s novice. All games were started right on time, in the women s novice there were plenty of great shooters in this field, but one lady who only had her baby a couple of months ago never lost a match through out the novice division event. Ami Tibbets from Eureka California played her (l to r) Pete Pozun and Earl Patterson toughest against Althea Neilsen, Heather Harris, Patty LaMontagne, Dawn Williams and then faced Patty LaMontagne again for her final match. Patty never got the chance to get even one point against Ami. In the women s open, Jackie Fitchner was the girl to watch out in this event. A resident of Eugene played very tough, it was rare that she missed a shot or got out of line for her next shot. One miss from her opponent, Jackie ended up running the table on them. She went through Penny Burdick and Anna Harris before she lost her next match against Vicki Mathis from (7 Feathers continued on page 21)

Fisher Wins Cuetec Cues Midwest Classic E. PEORIA, IL The Par-a-Dice Hotel Casino hosted the Cuetec Cues Midwest West Classic, June 11-15. Allison Fisher defended her title and went undefeated through the tournament. She faced Karen Corr in the finals whom she had just Allison Fisher and Janet Shimel (Cuetec Cues) sent to the one loss side. The finals saw Karen start out with a 5-3 lead, but Allison was able to perservere and tie the score at 5. Allison took the next rack and the score was now 6-5. Karen was not about to call it quits though and she came back and tied it at 6. This left the final game with Karen breaking and a hillhill match. The game was a test of who s skill was better at safety play with Allison coming out on top for the 7-6 victory. Allison retains her #1 ranking in the WPBA standing with Karen a close second. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5/6 7/8 9-12

Hsin Huang and Katherine Czarkowski, who both live in Vancouver BC, prepare to lag for the final match at the NWPA s fourth 2003 tour stop at McQ s Billiards in Spokane, Wash. The tournament, which was sponsored by RT9 Designs, owned by Linda Pault, of New York, drew 48 players from across the Northwest and Canada. Huang won the tournament, while Czarkowski took second. Mona Remedios, also of Vancouver, fell in third.

determination, beating Martha Hartsell, 7-4 and Jo Woodward, 7-1. Then Czarkowski retaliated against Remedios, beating her 7-4, running the last two racks from the break to win the match and a spot in the finals. Huang and Czarkowski both played strong, solid games, trading racks back and forth, but Huang consistency and strong safety play allowed her to slowly pull away from Czarkowski, and win the final set 9-6. Czarkowski collected $358 for second and Remedios pocketed $258 for third place. The NWPA cannot express enough thanks to the staff of McQ s for the terrific job they did handling the packed house and for the help offered by McQ s manager and tournament director Clay Skidmore and general manager Mike Yost. The tournament drew the largest turn out of the year for the NWPA and ran smoothly with the help of NWPA tournament director Ted Woodward, Skidmore and volunteers Dave Lauer, of Emerald City Cue Repair, Chris Rogers, and Dan Coffman. Before the tournament got underway Sunday, Skidmore signed a contract to invite the Vancouver s Katherine Czarkowski NWPA back in 2004. The tournament was achieved her highest finish to date obviously a smashing success, Skidmore in an NWPA tournament. said. I ve never gotten so many compliments during a tournament. We look forward to having the NWPA here next year. During the tournament, players were treated to free massages by the Inland Massage Institute and received On The Break coffee mugs, donated by Don Cheese Akerlow, who stopped by to watch the action. The consolation tournament also drew a large number of players and was dominated by the Montana contingent of players, many of whom were making their first NWPA appearance. The consolation tournament was won by Mary Hopkin, of Richland, Wash., but who is originally from Montana. Second place went to Janet Dunks, of Butte, Mont., who has won the Montana State 8-ball Championship numerous times. Veteran Mary Garcia, also of Butte, Mont., took third place. Pepsi, of Spokane, donated T-shirts which were given away during the tournament. Raffle Winners: RT9 Prints: Andy Ruth, Carnation, Wash.; Jo Woodward, Kent, Wash.; Julie Burney, Portland, Ore. Stroke Around The Rack

This month s Artistic Shot is from the Stroke Discipline. This shot is named Stroke Around The Rack. This shot has a Degree of Difficulty (D.O.D.) of 7. Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up you must first put the rack in its normal or standard position for racking making sure the rack is straight. Next place the edge of the cue ball closest to the foot cushion even with the back of the rack and two ball s width from the point of the rack. The next step is to place two object balls, (between cue ball and A ball), plus A ball and cue ball are all frozen in a straight line to pocket A. The F ball is centered between the pocket points. The objective of the shot is to shoot the cue ball into three balls, trying to go through the resistance of them, sending A ball to pocket A. The cue ball goes out past the rack and makes a curving draw to pocket ball F as pocket letter designated. A and F ball must be made. Here are some special notes. A scratch is allowed. The cue ball may hit an extra cushion by F ball. The two object balls between the cue ball and A ball do not have to be made. The cue ball may not touch the rack before F ball is made, but can after F ball is made. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. This stroke shot requires a very good follow through, not with power but with a fluid stroke. I use low right English and cue the cue ball at about 4:30. Aim the center of your shaft from where you re applying English to about ½ diamond segment to the left of pocket A. Try to keep the cue as level to the plane of the table as possible. If the cue ball is squirting to the left too quickly and hitting the rack then you are aiming too far to the left of pocket A. If the cue ball is going straight with the line of three balls you will need to aim further to the left. This stroke shot is a unique blend of speed and spin. Good luck to everyone. Next month s shot will be a D.O.D. of 6 from the Jump Discipline, which was recently performed on ESPN s Trick Shot Magic. OTB

Learn the Table By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy A large part of playing in different locations is adapting to the conditions. Many players myself included at times encounter equipment that leaves them baffled. Size is important. I started learning on a small home table, and when I moved to the 4.5 by 9s at the pool hall, both my shot making and ball positioning suffered for a while. Then my game got tuned to a nine-footer, and my brief expeditions to other sizes were a problem. Gradually, my experience built up, and changing to a different size was no big deal. The key is to get experience on a good range of tables so you are prepared for whatever you have to deal with. This flexibility came in handy when I was playing in an eight ball league with everything from 7-foot to 10-foot tables. Yes, one room out in the sticks had set up a big table to trap the visiting team. The cue ball can be a big problem due to its weight. It s not just a problem of the bar ball that is Bob Jewett oversized to get the ball return to work, but also a normal-sized cue ball becomes smaller with wear so that after a few years it s significantly smaller than the object balls. I played with just such a small cue ball for six months early in my career without realizing that my great draw was due to the defective equipment. When I ventured out to a strange hall, none of my position worked, and my opponent just waited for the last two or three balls before finishing me each rack. Here is a test you can do to test the weight of the cue ball. Place the balls as shown in Shot A, and draw back to leave the cue ball nearly touching the side cushion. Repeat until you come fairly close each time. Now use the object ball as the cue ball, and try the shot again. Do you find the draw much easier or harder? A light cue ball draws well, but follow is hard. A heavy bar ball will follow well, but is much harder to draw. My own preference is for a cue ball that is the same size and weight as the object balls that s the standard, but it s not always available. Another major variable is the cloth. Many rooms now have very smooth worsted cloth like Simonis, Granito or Championship which has essentially no nap and the ball runs for a long time. Other rooms use heavy, napped cloth, which is much slower and helps to hide roll-offs because the ball stops rolling so quickly the slope has little effect. Try lagging the cue ball a few times when you first get to a strange table, and then try a few position shots like Shot B, where the cue ball has a fair amount of travel. If you haven t mastered the speed on a strange table, don t try to play precise position unless there is no other choice; instead play area shape further from the object ball.

Tour Schedule

July 26-27: Cue Phoria, Carson City, NV (775) 882-5997 Aug 23-24: California Billiard Club, Mtn View, CA (650) 965-3100 Sept 20-21: Broken Rack, Emeryville, CA (510) 652-9808 Oct 11-12: Hard Times Billiards, Sacramento, CA (916) 332-8793 Nov 8-9: Family Billiards, San Francisco, CA (415) 931-1115 For more information contact the above location or Julie Hunter (775) 882-5997

A last major consideration is the cushions. These can be dead or lively, slippery or sticky, high or low. If you use the cushions a lot for position play, you should develop a few practice shots for your warmups. One is to shoot the cue ball three cushions around the table to go to the corner pocket, checking both the speed and angle. Another is to shoot straight up the middle of the table with maximum side spin to see how much the spin takes on the cushion, as in Shot C. You need to have a set of test shots like these for strange tables. Besides the ones above, take shots from your own bad experiences and make them into tests. Be prepared.

KENT, WA. Jonathan Denning of The Breaking Point in Lynnwood is making the Northwest Women s Pool Association s final 2003 event the richest women s 9-ball tournament ever held in the Northwest. Denning is adding $1,500 to the prize fund of the tournament, which will be held Oct. 11-12 at Denning s upscale Lynnwood pool room. In addition, Snohomish Amusement Company, of Everett, is adding $750 to the consolation tournament Sunday. This will be the second year Denning has hosted the NWPA s year-end final tournament and it is expected to have the largest NWPA field in its history. We are so grateful for Denning s generosity, said Mary Hopkin, the NWPA s media relations officer. The added money is sure to draw plenty of attention and new players to the NWPA. SHOTZE S 8TH ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TOURNAMENT

APA Youth Tournament

From: Tournament Directors - Rose Wilson and Mr. Ford

EVERETT, WA It quickly proved to be the biggest and best to this date. There were 57 players from all over, who came to win the largest first place payout ever in a Shotze s tournament! Kris Iverson made his way to the finals by defeating Harry Platis (71), J.D. (7-5), Mike Shannon (7-0), Kevin Ross (8-5), T.R. Olson (84), and defeating Tim Tweedell for the point match (8-4). Kris has played in Kris Iverson almost all of Shotze s tournaments right from the beginning, but it had been quite awhile since he had been seen in the finals. Kris played very well and deserved to be there! Tim Tweedell played hard and fast to make it into the finals. In his matches he defeated Mike Vidas (7-5), Dana Aldridge (7-0), Jim Masterman (8-1), Chad Aldridge (85), and then lost to Kris Iverson (4-8). Tim was far from being finished. He defeated the great Canadian champion John Horsfall (7-4), to have another try at Kris. The match started pretty even until Tim made a critical error by shooting a ball out of order. After that the concentration just seemed to flow up and out the window, giving Kris all the edge he needed to finish Tim off and clam the victory with a score of (9-3). Thanks again to Darryl and Dave for putting on a first rate tournament, also to the staff at Shotze s for providing great service to all the players. 1ST Kris Iverson $1,100 $486 Tim Tweedell $725 $364 2 ND John Horsfall $500 $243 3 RD Kevin Ross $350 $122 4TH 5/6 T.R. Gripper Grabber The Gripper Grabber is designed to grip the cue shaft to provide a good snug fit with the butt of the cue. Simply assemble the cue as you normally would. Then place the Gripper Grabber around the cue shaft and gently snug them together. The result is an astounding solid hit, that you might have never thought possible with your own cue. The Gripper Grabber comes in handy if you can t get your shaft unlocked from the butt. Merely put it on the shaft, get a firm grip and twist. It comes apart easily. This is another great invention from Bill Bauer, inventor of the Gripper Cue Caddy. OTB

The Pool Cube is the newest and most exciting way to play pool ever invented. Combine the most exciting features of craps and poker with 9-Ball or 8-Ball, and you have Cube Pool ! Role the dice and raise your bet on the game. The Pool Cube makes for an exciting game of 9-Ball or 8Ball or whatever your favorite game of pool may be, where every inning is dramatic and important. The game becomes more fun, more exciting, more strategic and more dangerous. For instance, if you know your opponents weakness, and you are about to start a new inning, and you spot an opportunity to leave them with an impossible safe or if you are confident of your ability to run out, you can double the point value and force them to accept the challenge or concede the game. When doubling the bet by tapping on the table 2-3 times with the cube several strategies emerge or appear. If your opponents balls are tied up or in a cluster you would definitely want to tap the cube and double the bet, thus gaining more points ... maybe. With each inning played new strategies can emerge from the same old ones, making the bet or the race in points sought with more anticipation or anxiety. Look for tournaments to evolve from this game. It is great fun for pool players of all skill levels. Log on to www.poolcube.com to read/download the rules, place your order, get tournament information, or for general information.

Where Good Friends Meet

Oh that pesky table with the funny rolls. They put on Simonis cloth so the balls had a smooth surface and would roll true, but they still curve. Every league night someone has a new theory and the table is readjusted and soon you have to stand on tiptoes to reach the play surface and make a shot. The culprit is gravity. Slate is heavy but it is not structural. It came out of the ground and gravity pulls right on the very center of the surface to pull Pat Sheehan it back to the earth. Without enough support in the frame this will happen over the years. In 1945 when Brunswick redid their product line with the C1 Series Anniversary Sport King, Centennial and Moderne Tables, they eliminated the long braces on the length of the table. The tables had a massive frame around the perimeter but only a 2x6 spanning the width of the table. Every table sagged so badly that by 1947 when the balls were broken everything wound up in the middle of the table. They sent out a retro fit kit and from 1948 to 1974 every Brunswick table had the long braces. Since then most manufacturers have gone back to just the short braces. Golden West and myself protect the center. If your table rolls away from the rail at both ends you can be sure that gravity rules have not been repealed. Take one of the striped balls (don t use the cue ball or small numbered balls because they are probably not round) and drop it on the rubber cushion tip to get English out of the way. Watch it roll and see if it runs parallel to the end rail. Do it at both ends. If the ball works its way to the center you have a sag. If you have a coin table here is my formula for leveling. Get a good level, machinist level if possible, for a carpenter s level is not very accurate and be sure that it reads the same both directions in exactly the same spot. The machinist level can be adjusted, carpenter level find a different one. I forgot to bring my level on a job and went through four of my customer s levels before finding one that would read the same both ways. Find the high corner and drop it if possible. The leg turns counterclockwise to lower, clockwise to raise. Bring the low corner at the high end to match. Place the level on the side of the slate and the low corner to match the longway of the table. Go to the other side and bring it level. Check the cross direction and level. If you have a machinist level place it diagonal from each corner. If the corners are all high you have a sag. If you don t have a machinist level do the ball drop across the end if it rolls consistently to the center, pull off the rails and pull out the slate. Check to see if there is a double thickness of cloth or anything under the perimeter support. Add a 1/16 shim in the center of the cross braces. Put the slate back in and push down and tighten the end rails. Check for sag again, if so add another 1/16 . Put on all the rails pushing down while tightening one eighth if max. If it still sags you will have to add additional support to the center of the table. OTB Next month how to level the three piece slate table.

The Pool Whisperer . . . . . Lance McGill Ongoing Education There is a saying that Frederick the Great lost the battle of Jena. So what? Right? I would agree, so what? Except that the surrounding facts are fascinating. That battle took place in the year 1806.... and even that appears to be of no great import, until you read on to find out that Frederick the Great died in 1786, twenty years before the battle even took place! So then, why is it, (you ask) that some historians credit him with that loss? Here s why: The army perpetuated the successful organization instead of adapting to meet the changes in the art of war. The rules had changed and the army had stayed the same. And now you might understandably be saying, Alright, and this is in a POOL publication for what reason? When I was a young child living in the poolrooms around New York City, straight pool (14.1) was the popular equivalent to what 9-ball is today. If you didn t play world-class straight pool you weren t going to make much money. And if you did happen to fall blindly on a stack of dollar bills, you wouldn t get to keep it for any amount of time. It would go something like this, Hey, Johnny just won some money. Go ask im to play some. Go... quick! Before he folds it. And I am a product of my time and environment just as

Frederick the Great was of his. One of the rules that we lived by in 14.1 was to NEVER PASS A POCKET. I never interpreted it to mean NEVER and at the same time, it was seemingly meant to be in effect at a percentage of the time that was, at least, higher than 99%. And if you stay with that rule when you play 9-ball or 8-ball you are likely to never win a game. The rules change. A lot of pool information is stale. Do you notice that when you work on learning draw that the information is the same from book to book. For banks? For kicks? Even the diagrams are the same from book to book?! And then there is the added effect of the information that is partially inaccurate added to the information that is simply and completely untrue. The officers in the army mentioned above were giving out bad information to their young recruits. It had worked well in the past, and at the same time, the rules had changed. Same for pool my friend, it s the same for pool. (I have an entire section in my book

dedicated to the various kinds of MISinformation that is on the market. I am also going to make it available separately as a short manual.) Now I ll offer some text in support of what I ve written here thus far: I ll illustrate the point as follows: those of you that play know how the standard one-pocket break is taught and that the information is reliable, sound and true. For the average player Simonis cloth became common around 1984-85. During that time you could almost rely on winning at least one game of one pocket because the player breaking had not yet realized that the rules had changed. That standard information was no longer true under the new rules. The books had been published and the lessons had been taught. -Then the rules changed. So some of us moved the cue ball further from the rail and used the same hit and speed. So the information was still good and useful once we added a response to the rule change. Just remember this when you leave a class with your instructor and go out into the

world. Stay alert, willing and flexible to the rule changes. I ve been out the last 2 nights shopping for pool tables. Last night I found tables that I liked and decided to play on them for a while. And as I got into it there were many times throughout the night that I had a small crowd gathered around my table. I did several finger pool exhibitions and played everyone that asked. During this entire night there was a young man there that I knew who was completely ignoring me. I can understand him ignoring me. It was just strange to watch him read my June article at the same time? AND-the article included a way to resolve conflict with another person! I knew him one way before he got the input of others; he was easy, cordial, interested and excited. Now, nothing. No talking and no eye contact. Whatever he got from someone else was enough for him to discontinue his association with me. And because he s not as old as the stories that have circulated I know that he wasn t there to see for himself. So for something that MIGHT have happened-and MIGHT have happened as much as 20 years ago.... nothing for he and I. There is a fascinating aspect to ignoring (Pool Whisperer continued on page 23)

Unusual Pool Games

A new tournament Thursday nights challenges players at Hot Shots in Beaverton, OR Two young, and upcoming shooters, Pete and Lee, both usually either win or are in the finals for the money in the 9-ball tournaments at Hot Shots. Neither they, nor the other regular players, had ever heard of 3-Shot or Precision Rotation before May 1 of this year but now those are their games of choice at Hot Shots in the new Thursday night open tournaments. Pete is 21 and Lee is 17 but I can testify that they can give experienced players a run for the money when you join them in a game on a pool table. OK. So they have some skill in 9-ball, so what? There are a lot of good young 9-ball players you might say. There are many other skills in pool like carom shots, speed control, and banking that an accomplished 9-ball player doesn t use much (some, but they aren t emphasized as the focus of the game). So how good are these and the other regulars really? An answer to this question came in April of this year when I was trying to come up with a way to promote interest in my new pool book that I finally finished and self-published New Pool Games to Improve Your Skill, Improve Your Smile And Make You Mad As Hell (available at Hot Shots and on the web at www.newpoolgames.com). I decided to challenge Pete and Lee and the other regulars at Hot Shots to a pool skill test in the form of a new weekly tournament during the month of May (every Thursday night at 7:00 PM) based on three of the games in my book. In order to attract the serious player s interest, I decided to add $50 to the normal pot so that $30 was added to the winner and $20 to the second place player. Also, as usual, we split the $7 entry fee so that $4 went to the winner and $2 went to second with $1 going to a randomly drawn player. This was a pretty good incentive because for 8 players, the winner got $62 (8 players x $4 = $32 + $30 added by me) and second got $36 while a randomly drawn player got $8. After printing up some flyers describing the new tournament format (more on that later), the first tournament night was held Thursday May 1. As the players showed up to see what was going on, I became very busy demonstrating the games and explaining some of the strategies that work well. Fearing that new games would possibly cause the tournament to last too late, I initially set the tournament format up to consist of a race to two with the winners of the first round all joining in on a multi-player game and the losers doing the same on another table. Then, the winner of the multiplayer winner s bracket would play the winner of the multi-player loser bracket with the looser bracket winner having to beat the winner bracket player twice to win the tournament. After randomly pairing each of the 8 initial players, we started out with the winner of a coin toss choosing one of three possible games as the first game of the match and the other player getting to shoot first. The players then alternated selecting the games from the remaining two un-played games. In Three shot, speed control and banking is the emphasis, while in Carom Pool caroming any of the 15 object balls off of the cue ball into a called pocket is the requirement. Precision Rotation is a normal ball running game but the balls a start in a specific pattern on the table and the shooter must run them in rotation without touching another ball so that the emphasis is on shot making with exact position play required. I refereed the games and saw many players struggling with the new skill requirements that the games stressed. I kept encouraging them as I knew that the games would be tough, especially at first. Unlike 9-ball, there is little or no luck involved in these games and shooting hard and hoping won t pay off.

Pete won and Lee took second but they both struggled with the games (as everyone did). I noticed that unlike the open 9-ball tournament nights, we did have a husband and wife play in the games and some other new players. Everyone said that they liked the games and looked forward to next Thursday night. During the first tournament night, Buzz, a high school physics and math teacher who uses pool as a teaching aid in the classroom (obviously a genius teacher), said that he liked the games but didn t like the multi-player 2nd and 3rd round formats. After I confirmed this objection with a couple of the other players, I changed the format to be a standard double elimination ladder format. I reasoned that since the players after the first tournament night now had some experience, we could probably finish in a reasonable time. In the following tournaments, the warm weather left us with less than 8 players so I actually joined in the play (with the agreement of all players) but finished behind Pete and Lee out of the money in my own games! After the 5 May tournaments ended, so did my promotion of adding $50 to the pot so I was curious to see if the interest continued. It did! On Thursday June 5, we had 9 players on a very warm summer night and several others that came in too late to get into the games. Jeff, the owner of Hot Shots, agreed to continue the tournaments and he said that he would contribute added prize monies if there are a minimum of 16 players. That would mean that the winner would get nearly $100 and second would get $52. In answer to some of the players concerns about attracting regional strong players that would dominate the games, I pointed out that it would not necessarily mean that some of the name players would be able to walk in and take 1st place easily as they might in a 9-ball or 8-ball tournament. These new games reward players that know a wider range of pool skills, know the tables that we play on and that also know the unique game strategies. Several players said that they would pass the word to other players who would be interested and we are all looking forward to the increasing competition and prize monies. So, there is an open invitation to all players that can join us on one of the Thursday night tournaments at Hot Shots in Beaverton, OR.

His father and grandfather before him had Cassem s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and

out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80 s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and

Part 5

In Part One, Carter Keating, college graduate and former Special Operative returns home from a tour of duty in the Colombian jungles. Gracie, his significant other, has dumped him for someone else. He enrolls in the local police academy and meets new friend, Joe Lauterette. Later, Elizabeth, a new companion, seeing his love for the game, inspires him to enter the Texas Eight Ball Championships. The story continues as he ponders the decision. Part Two finds Keating and Lauterette at a local restaurant, talking about his former passion for the game, and the role that Jimmy the Stick Gadwell and old Charley Sturgis had in teaching him to be a young prodigy at only eighteen. Part Two ends as Keating decides to fish his cues out of mothballs and prepare for the tournament. Part Three has Keating working on his game in Sharky s, a popular Houston hangout. In the interim, Danny the Brat approaches Keating for a game. A verbal confrontation ensues and the Brat storms off pouting. Later Linda Jo Minard, a local singer and pretty good player, approaches Keating while he practices. Part Four continues as Keating befriends Linda Jo. As he leaves Sharky s another confrontation almost develops between Keating and Danny the Brat s cohorts. Later, Keating, Lauterette, Linda Jo, and Elizabeth anxiously await the pairings for the Texas Prelims. The story continues as Keating and his first opponent, an Asian pair off in an eight ball race to five. WE LAGGED FOR THE BREAK. I WON, HIT THE RACK SOLID but didn t make a ball. He missed his first shot, I ran out to the eight and got buried getting shape on the eight. After that I sweated the game out until he left me dead in the jaws of the corner pocket. Four racks later, I had won the match. The noise in Sharky s was loud, the air scented strong with smoke and pizza.

returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough,

Every table around me had a game going on it. Elizabeth, not into the smoke or the loud noise, opted for her apartment. Joe and Linda Jo shifted from one game to another, watching the action. Don t look like you need much help, Keating. He said. Linda Jo and I are gonna see what you re competition s like. Nod. My second match surprised me. Five ten, two twenty, he wore erudite looking, extra thick, brown-rimmed glasses, had on a dark blue long sleeve shirt, dress pants, black unpolished penny loafers and black socks. His face was stubbled, his teeth stained. His stroke, however, was smooth and competitive. He won the lag, made a ball on the break, ran to the eight and hung the eight in the upper corner pocket. I made three balls, missed a breakout on the remaining cluster, and hung up a risky combination. He holed the eight and jumped out to a one game lead then made the eight on the break in the second game. Thought makin the eight on the break didn t usually count in most tournaments, Joe said. Nod. Right, I said, and in the long run it ought to work to my advantage. He scratched on the next break. I ran out. Score two one, his favor. Bubble Eyes hits em pretty good, Joe muttered under his breath. He was behind me, but I knew the voice. Nod. Unless I was intentionally hyping a game, my mouth usually stayed shut during a match. Linda Jo whispered, he s one of the better players in Sharky s. Nod. Bubble Eyes racked the balls tight. Lining up the cue ball to the right side, I eyed the second ball down in the rack, stayed low on the shot, followed through and caught the object ball full in the face. The rack exploded, and two balls darted into each of the lower corner pockets. The cue ball, at impact shot to the side rail, missed three object balls then settled lazily in the middle of the table. Before the rest of the balls stopped rolling, two more fell in the upper corner pockets. Spread beautifully, the table looked like Golden Pond with eleven sitting ducks, all basking individually in the sun. Without hesitation, I ran the table. Geez, Joe commented, must of pissed you off, Keating. Chewing on my lower lip, I eyed Joe with a wry, tolerable smile, and fixed my concentration back to the table. Bubble Eyes thumbed the balls tightly and quickly drew the rack away. The six fell loosely out of the rack about a quarter of an inch. I gestured for a re-rack. Bubble Eyes, void of expression, shrugged and re-racked the balls. Satisfied, I hammered the diamond cluster with almost the same results. Only this time, three balls dropped in the pockets instead of four. I ran the table. Bubble Eyes didn t win another game. My next opponent caught me in dead stroke, and though I played safe twice during the match, I still won five zero. He gestured to Linda Jo about getting something to eat. Prettier n you, Keating, he jived tongue in cheek. Hopefully you ll understand. Nod. (Resurrection continued on page 29)

Dreams of the Golden West By: Pat Sheehan

This is the most interesting industry and sport because it is small enough that you get to know the most interesting and fascinating people who are the major factors yet large enough that the best can become successful. As a manufacturer of tables and Don Brostoski a master of the service end, people ask me who are my competitors. I enjoy telling them that I don t have any competition in this industry just a lot of friends that do the same things I do. One of those friends is Don Brostoski. You might not know his name, but his company Golden West is known and respected throughout the world. Yet whenever I need something Don Brostoski is the first person I call and he never lets me down. I first met Don in Los Angeles in the early 70 s. Les Lystad from American Games and myself were at a convention in Anaheim and everyone told us that we had to go to his shop. Don met us at the door and gave us a complete tour. He didn t give us any kind of a pitch because his product was good enough to speak for itself. He was producing very high quality reproductions of the tables that made the Brunswick Balke Collander Co. famous in the late 19th century. Golden West did a copy of the Monarch with cast lion head legs and my favorite, the Popular. Both Les and I carried many other reproductions but the workmanship and structure of Don s tables were so far ahead of everyone else that they were an easy sell. I was building a copy of the Brunswick Wilmington which was a good seller but Golden West had the style and finish for the upper end of my clientele. Golden West is always a step ahead and surely a step above everyone else in the industry which has made them the success they are. Don does most of the design work himself and has a real flair for the dramatic. I go into the factory quite often and go through the showroom to get to Don s office and have to say Wow to myself. Golden West has the machinery and talent to make Don s dreams on paper a reality going out the door. In 1975 Golden West added a state of the art carving machine that turns out 24 carved pieces at a time. At that time there were very few carving machines and it took forever to get them for what you sold. They have lathes, saws, planers, sanders and every woodworking tool that make a tool junkie like myself drool, but the finishing area is what separates the men of Golden West from the rest of the boys in the industry. Don decided to move his plant from the LA area to Portland to continue using lacquer finish which was being outlawed in that area. Of course, anyone knows what life and work are line in LA. Besides the cost and seemingly overwhelming logistics of moving a plant of its size one thousand miles, Don had to look at leaving behind the contacts with the movie and entertainment folks. CBS, NBC and Universal Studios were regular customers. His Valencia table was designed for the set of Tom Selic s Magnum P I and was in almost every show. He did tables for Mary Tyler Moore, Michael Jackson, Gordy from MoTown and all the exec s of MCA Records. The list of Golden West owners was a Who s Who from the Hollywood area and now that section of buyers remains with several of the more than 100 dealers throughout the world. You have to imagine that the move to Portland and setting up a state of the

art plant was a terrific drain on a small business, but he brought all of his long term employees with him and took care of their relocating but the plan worked and now Don is on the board to relocate other companies to Oregon. Golden West s business has boomed here in Frank Crow , Lathe operator Oregon and has risen to the top of their field producing over 5,000 tables per year each one a masterpiece. They have continued to add machinery to keep that step ahead of the rest of the industry. Rudy Lianozo continues to operate the carving machine. If Golden West needs a unique leg they can design and produce it and 24 copies before their competitors can call China to place an order. Frank Crow operates the lathe but the key to the future of Golden West is Robert Brostoski, Don s son. Robby is 30 years old and can run every piece of machinery in the plant. He is really the man under the gun. As factory operations manager it is his responsibility to get Don s dream built, finished and out the door. Knowing what a task it is to get one table planned, built and delivered I have to respect the guy who gets 5,000 out the door and still have time to pull a set of slate for me. Rob has never let me down. If you are thinking about buying or only want to dream a little about a pool table see their ad on this page. Golden West will be glad to send a brochure or take you on a tour of the plant. Everyone of their tables is a thing of beauty that will play right, bring years of compliments for your furniture (Golden West continued on page 22)

RENO, NV The Sands Regency Casino Hotel once again played host to the Reno Open 9-Ball Tournament held June 3-8, 2003. There was an awesome field of 202 talented players all vying for the $12,000 first place prize money. And the winner is ... John Schmidt, new house pro at Hidden Pockets in Milton, Florida. John went undefeated (l to r) John Schmidt (1st) and Alex Pagulayan (2nd) through the tournament to face Alex Pagulayan in the finals. Alex was sent to the one-loss side after losing to Jose Parica in the early rounds. He then parlayed 11 wins to get to the finals. In the final round it looked like Pagulayan would take the first set. He had an early 5-3 lead but John persevered and tied the match at 5. From there on it was smooth sailing for John as he won the match 9-5 and took home the top prize.

The 23rd Annual VNEA Int l Championships

LAS VEGAS, NV If you ever wondered what the most impressive Pool Tournament setting in the history of the game looked like, the 23rd Annual VNEA Championships which ran from May 22nd through the 31st, 2003 was the place to see just that. As players entered the first Grand Ballroom of the Riv, you could see an instant smile on their faces and more often than not, their first words were WOW , come here, you ve got to see this! Players traveled to Las Vegas from Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Croatia, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. That s 10 countries not including 6 Canadian Provinces and 39 United States. They are greeted with Dave Pearson s Speed Pool arena which coincides with Tom Dr. Cue Rossman s Artistic Pool setting. A bit farther lies the coveted VNEA Finals Arena which await the outcome of some of the tournaments biggest matches. A practice facility fittingly called Charlies Pool Palace will shortly catch your eye as well as an abundance of freshly set Valley pool tables (250 in all). Further into the room you find several mini-bar stations as well as a mini-food court to tantalize the players taste buds. A critical part of the main room revolves around the ever-busy VNEA Booth which offers the players as well as Charter Holders and spectators a place to get VNEA questions answered, pick up tournament souvenirs, get team pictures taken or enter raffles galore with all monies going to the incredible VNEA Junior Program. Also located in the VNEA Booth was the very popular Rack-A-Round competition which tested the players cue ball control as well as ball-clearing efficiency. Competition was fun and great times were recorded. At the end of the room was the VNEA Control Stage which was run with impeccable proficiency throughout the entire event. This is just what you saw when you first got to the tournament. There was still another ballroom as well as side rooms, a Vendors Arena (filled with pool paraphernalia to meet every players needs), and countless other side events. From two fun-filled pool parties (swimming pool), to an incredible Opening Ceremonies, to Certified Instructor and Referee Courses, to an elegant President s Reception, to a show-ending Awards Banquet, the VNEA traveling extravaganza is the greatest Pool Show on the planet. Oh Yeah! There was plenty of pool competition as well. From 8-Ball and 9-Ball Singles to Scotch Doubles to 304 N Main Pocatello, ID Team events, the VNEA kept its players busy playing pool for as long as they wanted every day of the tournament. Also, for the convenience of friends, family and press back home, the results of this tournament were reported, as events unfolded, live on the internet at www.vnea.com.

Kings Korner Anniversary 8-Ball Tournament May 30th 1st Place Ken Keierleber and Ryan Dunster

BILLINGS, MT Our Anniversary Tournament was a very good tournament. Team match ups were especially good. Leads changed with almost every match. The teams that were qualified for the playoffs were not determined until the final games were played. Teams that didn t appear to have a chance came through to finish in the money. Conversely, teams that looked like sure winners didn t place at all. This was a real nail biter and the score sheet was just as exciting as the games being played. Here are the results after the last game was played: 1st Ken Keierleber and Ryan Dunster Brent DeBree and Dale Cowger 2 nd Sue Miller and Heinz Steinhauer 3 rd 4 th Don Partyka and Doug Asleson th 5 Randy Sayre and Jo Shierk Mike Ameline and Josh Morgan 6 th Now we re having fun! In the Men s Open, Medford s Darrold Crain was the one to look out for; he went through Gary Maxwell, Gary Peyton, Richard Goodrich, Tony Bloom, Tony Balzer, and Rich Copeland. He faced Tony Balzer for his final match, but because they both had a long drive home, Tony Decided to (l to r) Jackie Fitchner (1st), Julie Stallings (2nd) forfeit the match and give first place to Darrold. Lee Remmers Wins Junior BCA Qualifier in Springfield By Andrena Browne

Dean s Pool Hall in Springfield held it s first Junior BCA Qualifier Tournament on May 31. There were two entries, Avary Hartsell, 17, from Eugene, and Lee Remmer, 16, from Portland. Since BCA regulations require a double elimination format, the players played the best two out of three races to seven with alternating breaks. Although the field was small, the quality of the players was Lee Remmer immediately apparent. Both players have a terrific break that echoes off the walls of the room. The young players employed all the tricks of the trade; push outs, safeties, jumps and masse s. Avary has had some experience playing in open tournaments at the recently closed Q Street Billiards in Springfield before it stopped serving the under 21 crowd. Lee played twice weekly in Portland. Recently he was ranked there as an A player, so he can no longer play in the B tournament and will have to make do with one local tournament per week. Play began with some nervousness shown by both players. They each had a few missed opportunities in the first three games. Avary made a beautiful run on rack three but left himself a tough bank on the eight. He made the shot leaving himself another bank on the nine but missed this one. Lee shot in the nine bringing the score to 2-1, Lee. Lee s nervousness faded and his quality of play escalated. Avary made a great break but nothing fell and Lee ran out. Lee also took game five after some back and forth shooting and safeties. In game six, Lee missed the two ball twice, but hooked Avary both times. Avary made a good kick on the first hook and a jump on the second one that barely missed pocketing the ball. Lee, left with a clear shot on the two ran out again. Next Lee broke and pushed. Avary hooked him. Lee made a good hit. Avary made the one and banked the two into the nine, score 5-2, Lee. Avary was shooting well, but behind and still looking nervous. In the next rack he shot more slowly and carefully. His hands were sweating. He shot the 6,7, and 8 - which took 5 seconds to fall into the pocket. He blew on his hands and lined up on the nine, but left it deep in the pocket. Game lost - but no, Lee came off the rail next to the corner and missed the whole ball. That was Avary s last win this set. Lee won the next two games for a 7-3 victory. In the second set, Lee continued to shoot with confidence. He ran tables and played very impressively. Avary made a lot of great shots but was unable to finish games. Lee won the second set and the tournament was over. Excellent sportsmanship was displayed by both players. After the congratulations and pictures they made arrangements to meet and play together during the summer. Both complained that their friends weren t interested in pool. Thanks are due to Dean Harper of Dean s Pool Hall for holding the tournament and to tournament director, Martha Hartsell. (You can guess where Avary learned to love pool.) John Ryon, a certified BCA referee, kindly agreed to be the ref and racked the balls for every game. Many thanks to him, also. Congratulations and the best of luck to Lee in the National Junior BCA Tournament in Michigan. OTB

choice and stay in your family for generations. They build a unit that defies the laws of gravity, that wants to pull the slate back into the ground from where it came (see From the Work Bench page 12), most other manufacturers overlook the long braces down the center of the table. Golden West and I always support the center of the tables that we build. Don has never been obsessed with the bottom line or pinched every penny to make the most out of a table and overlook the longevity and lasting quality of the product. That has been the success of adding dealers who can see the strong parts and give them the selling point beyond price. Golden West tables hold their value. They are a great company to do business with and treat their customers right.

someone. In order to succeed at ignoring them you have to know where they are every moment?! I don t think that all of you should like or agree with me; I m just not that naive. I choose to be naïve enough to trust you to not dissuade a kid that asks you about me or says that he saw some amazing thing. Because they want to learn and because I want to teach. And my wanting to teach is not the mystery that you claim it to be. Them choosing to learn from me is easy to understand. I m the only player in the room who has time for those young minds that want to enjoy pool and trick shots, or get to play a pro without gambling away their paycheck or allowance. A particular woman asks Darin, Why is he doing this? Why is he writing these articles? What does he expect to accomplish? I put this in because I know you read the articles. (You know WHY you read em.) I don t know how else to tell you. I will answer you. You can t find out from Darin why I m writing or doing anything. You can t sit with Glen in a tavern and find out how I play. You can succeed at both at the school. It is likely that I ll end my writing with next months offering. If I do I ll make it a complete and thorough course on one-pocket. That of course would be lengthy and would be done insert form. I promise you that the manual will be thorough and complete. It won t be rehashed articles from the digest and it ll include information that you can t get anywhere else. The information will be exclusive to THE BREAK. Some of that exclusive information follows in this very article. While I was playing in CUE S last night I was told that an article had been written about jump cues and was asked what I thought of it. I was also asked what I thought of the teacher. I won t be reading the article... I read THE BREAK and Billiards Digest. As for the questions about the teacher, I ll respond to those when he himself is asking or is standing in the conversation. Here s the jump cue slant at McGill s. The first time that I heard of a jump cue was in 1980 or 1981. I recall some time in the early seventies, players in New York beginning to experiment with using only the shaft on particular shots. (Using the shaft only has many uses that will be covered in my book and I haven t seen them anywhere else to date.) Here s the exclusive information as promised: put the joint protector on the butt of your cue and it becomes an effective and accurate jump cue! Experiment with the flat and round types of protectors to see which one suits your stroke best. I find that this is completely effective on long straight full ball jumps!! Grip lightly as you would with the regular jump cue. You re gonna be pleased and surprised. And: for me there is no mention of the jump shot without the mention of Pat Fleming and his extraordinary contribution. For the use of the shaft only mention for me goes to Sammy Jones. Thank you both. For those of you willing to learn, all of the jump effects that we enjoy today came to light while Pat was missing sound familiar? MISSING masse shots. Last month I agreed to answer some of the email questions that I get about myself. I m going to respond to the skill question now and ALL OF THE QUESTIONS I ve received will be answered in an article and interview about me next month. I forward all of your questions to a dedicated email address so I still have each and every one of them. Now, to the skill question. Most of this began after Paul Marquez wrote an article about me and voiced his opinion. I got calls and emails so I responded. You said that his opinion was not valid for reasons not to be printed here. Then Jay Reed told of his gambling experience with me and after he won the first race, not shooting for the entire next race and pulling up in the middle of the third race- still, not having shot. Not a valid opinion. So, running racks wouldn t do. Then Scott voiced what he saw and thought. Again, not valid for reasons that I don t know. Jimmy G says what he thinks and not valid. You said that he doesn t know pool. That one is absurd because he does know pool and he knows the players. Even if Jimmy didn t know pool he reads people as well as anyone I ve ever met - he would spot BS long before the B had a chance to form. It s ridiculous to think that so many people would BS for my benefit anyway. Absolutely absurd. They saw it and you don t want to accept it. So then there s Darin. He has told you a thousand stroke stories and a story of more than 28 racks of 7 ball ran one morning. Opinion not valid. By the way, I do not use nor have I told this story. Mostly because it happened on an 8' barbox and also it s now about 13 years old. I think because Darin s not living the game the way that you think a real player should, you say again, not valid. None of these reasons negate what they saw. Still let s go with none of them being valid or true. Who will you listen to? Who will have enough of an effect on you to have you let that kid get to McGill s? The kid that really wants to learn how to play instead of paying money to learn what a drill is and how often to do one. Well I think I have the answer. In fact I know I do. You make the assumption and mistake to think that because I m not out there that I can t get it done. I understand that it is foreign to you that I have no desire to show you what I have. And that does not come with the inflection of mean or sarcastic. I understand that you don t get that. I hear

BILLIARD EDUCATION FOUNDATION TO AWARD EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS

From: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

(Colorado Springs, CO) The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) is proud to announce the creation of a new scholarship program that will award $14,500 in education scholarships beginning in 2004. Tom Riccobene, President of the BEF Board of Trustees, reports that The BEF has worked very hard over the last year to develop a scholarship program that supports the education of junior billiard enthusiasts. Our goal is to focus on academics and involvement in this great sport. We feel that this scholarship program will have the greatest impact on the most number of athletes throughout the United States. In addition to seven $1,000 annual scholarships, the BEF will also fund a $5,000 dual-year scholarship. There will also be a $2,500 Dr. Cue Artistic scholarship awarded. Applications will be available from BCA Junior League Operators and on the BCA website (www.bca-pool.com) beginning October 1, 2003 and must be postmarked by December 31, 2003. The BEF Scholarship Committee will review all applications in early 2004, with scholarship recipients announced March 1, 2004, in time for all commencement activities and print materials relating to graduation. The guidelines for applying are as follows: nOnly high school seniors may apply nEach applicant must write an essay (500 to 1,000 words) on a specified billiard topic nMinimum ACT score of 21 nMinimum GPA of 3.0 nTwo original letters of recommendation nComplete applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2003 Payments will be made directly to each of the winner s University or College upon receipt of an approved invoice from the educational institution. BCA Executive Director Stephen Ducoff states that Each year, the BEF hopes to increase the number of scholarships offered through the continued support of the industry and private donations. Participation in a strong billiard program can provide students with skills they can use to be successful in school, in life and in their careers. The long-range goal of the BEF is to develop the future leaders of our industry. The BEF Scholarship Program shows that we value education as much as we value the great sport of billiards. For information on how you or your organization can contribute to the BEF Scholarship Program, please contact Ms. Carrie Benson at 719.264.8300. The purpose of the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) is to further a standard of excellence and leadership within the billiard community by engaging in activities related to the educational and cultural advancement of tomorrow s leaders. The BEF is the charitable organization of the Billiard Congress of America ( BCA). The BCA is a national non-profit trade organization, dedicated to providing its members with exceptional value by promoting and growing cue sports worldwide. Three more wins to the final. I wiggled around the tables, crossed over to the bar and eyed the tournament board. Next match was still better than an hour away. Lilly, I yelled over the crowd. She turned, looked at me, nodded, drew a draft for a customer, then squeezed through the other bartenders to me. Her eyes sparkled, Yeah, Carter, whatsya need? Gonna step out n get some fresh air. Wiping down the bar, she glanced up and said, No problem. Be back early just in case. Nod. Thanks, Lilly, I said, then headed for the door. On the way out, I hoped that Danny the Brat would be in the finals. THE COLD FALL NORTHER moved relentlessly through my bones. I was hungry and needed to get away for awhile. The clouds were thick overhead, and a cold rain threatened. In the parking lot, Short and Stocky, Danny the Brat s friend, was leaning against my torch red 96 Vet convertible. Memories of the Colombian jungles flushed back into my mind. Immediately, I felt my body tense up, my toes flex and my knees bend slightly. My eyes stretched wide scanning for trouble. My neck tightened, my eyes narrowed and my fingers turned in as my hands readied for action. Excuse me, I said, that s my car you re leaning on. I said it casually, stopping just short, my eyes narrow and alert. Well, he laughed cynically, it s Big Shot. He didn t move. Come to think of it, he said, Just not in the mood to move right now. Suddenly my heart started palpitating. Listen Bozo, I said sternly, glancing at the ground, then looking back up. I m going to give you one chance to avoid some trouble. Otherwise . . . And if I don t? If you don t . . . well . . .

There was a sudden movement to my right. A shadow on the ground snaked quickly toward me. Fat Boy, glancing beyond me, stepped toward me. Whirling around without any wasted motion, I caught the owner of the approaching shadow completely off guard. It was the Brat s other buddy. I caught super star with my heel in his chest and knocked him back till he lost his balance and ended up on the ground. Fat Boy, not able to adjust his momentum, edged by me. I came around behind him and rammed an elbow straight into his neck from the back and thrust him to the ground, face first. Super Star, up on one knee, found his equilibrium and charged me. He never got there. I whirled around with a hard driving kick to his face. A tooth and spray of blood followed. He fell slowly to the ground. Short and Stocky, like a offensive lineman coming off the ball, came at me again. I stepped aside, grabbed him by the back of the shirt and forced him forward. He stumbled face first into the side of another car as I kicked his backside solidly. He slammed into the car, bounced back slightly and sank to the ground. In dreamland. I stood there listening to myself hyperventilate. My chest was heaving. Angrily, I readied for more. Until suddenly an inner voice stopped me. The war s over, Carter. No more killing. Exhaling, I slowly brushed off my clothes, fished my keys from my pocket, opened the door and climbed into the Vet. The therapy months before had helped. Life was different. Danny the Brat, I said to myself, and started the engine. God, if you re real, I said, see to it that he gets to the finals. Shifting to drive, I angled the Vet out of the parking lot onto Westheimer, due east to the Galleria. Colombia came to mind . . . and how something . . . someone . . . had kept me alive. And my thoughts shifted back to food . . .and Danny the Brat.

(continued from the front page)

Four of the top women in Boise Idaho put together a dynamite team comprising of all State Champions. Leslie Jacobs, Heidi Berthelot, Kim Anderson and Elizabeth Jensen teamed up to tackle the task of number one Internationally. We stayed undefeated until we were one of the 3rd Place Women s Regular Team final two teams on (l to r) Elizabeth Jensen, Leslie Jacobs, Kim Anderson, Heidi Berthelot the winner s side. When we played for the hill, Canada put us on the B-side. We hung in there bringing our next match within balls of winning, placing us in third place. Hey, Third is a great feat. Our team was completed just three weeks prior to the event when a fifth teammate (Nancy) became ill and Elizabeth (a substitute on the team) came in to replace her. Nancy, get better fast Girlfriend. Elizabeth Jensen of Boise and Ross Gutterude from Pocatello went undefeated to dominate the Scotch Double 8-Ball event. First place rendered $1250. We had never played as a team (said Elizabeth) and decided to give it a shot at the last minute. In Scotch doubles one partner shoots and then you take turns per shot until the game is won. It seamed as if we d played together all of the time. It went very smoothly. Kim Anderson of Boise braved a seasoned Women s senior singles 8-ball event. Kim stayed undefeated until running into Mary Traylor to play for the hill (final two on the winning side). Mary, a comrade that just moved from Boise to New Mexico gave Kim a tough time. With their match combating neck-toneck and a lot of nail biting on the spectator s part, Kim finished off in second place. Congratulations Kim. Heidi Berthalot gave her share of havoc in both the women s 9-Ball and Scotch doubles events placing 5th-8th in the Scotch Doubles with her Canadian partner, D. Fulton and 9th16th in the Women s 9-Ball. Go Heidi. One for the Boise men: We don t want to overlook Roger Anderson from Boise Idaho placing a coveted 9-16th in the Men s senior 8Ball event and 5th-8th in the Men s senior 9-Ball event. Great job Roger. Next year the team, Heidi, Kim, Leslie and Elizabeth will have to go back to compete in the Masters division after placing so high Internationally. We will Kim Anderson be ready. Thanks to all who took part in supporting the team.

POOL HALL FOR SALE In the beautiful Lake Oroville Recreational area, where fishing, boating and hunting abound, you will find Kingsmen Billiards. If you are interested in owning a poolhall give Bill Bausman a call (530) 534-1922. Bill, a barber by profession, opened Kingsmen Billiards in 1998 when he moved his barber shop across the street from its original location since 1963. The poolhall has five 9 Gandi tables, used by the Monday night USPPA leagues, and three 7 Coin-Op tables where the local Men s, Women s and Mixed Doubles Leagues play on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Bill s also started a Tuesday night Youth League for players 13 to 20 years of age. They play 8-Ball, BCA rules in a round robin format. The Youth league fee is $15 and $2 per night (which includes a soda). Besides pool there is also an arcade area which has pinball, a countertop video with 24 games and if you like to kill aliens Area 51 is your game. If you re more into driving then you should try Cruisin USA. Now, on to the snack bar. There is no grill so there is no grease to get on the tables but Bill does have a great selection of smoked sausage, quarter pound hot dogs, jerky, beef sticks, candy, chips and deli sandwiches. The house favorite is a Pastrami sandwich prepared by Bill s wife Terri. All of this and a beer license too! Bill has approximately fifteen different types of beer to offer his customers. Often his barber shop patrons will have a beer and shoot a game of pool while waiting for their turn in the chair. A perfect set up for the approximately 1800 square foot room. Kingsmen Billiards is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 11 pm or later depending on the crowd and Sundays from 2:30 pm to 11 pm or so. If this sounds like the ideal setup to you, give Bill a call at: OTB (530) 534-1922 and find out what a great deal this is!

Pool Whisperer

(continued from page 23)

EVERY TIME that I show it: man, if I could play like that....! And the sentence gets finished many individual ways. You know who you have to listen to? Earl and Efren. NOW, you re getting all excited, right. Well, stay excited, I m gonna go with those two I think that you don t have any choice but to listen to them. And please don t go off on some rant that I was badmouthing them or woofing. Any one who knows me knows that is not the case in any way. They are clearly, the men and I bow to what they have chosen. Before I give you the nugget- I ll give you a name and a number. The name is Ray Cunningham. The number is (503) 522-4983. Don t call me. Call Ray. See, he wants your call. It s his idea to put the number in here. What follows also happened at Jimmy G s and most recently in Easton, PA also: between matches at every pro event there is a time of exchange of shots, curiosities, tricks, makes and misses during a previous match, and so on. Ray was the manager of Cue s Billiards in Gresham, OR for many years, he gave Efren and Earl some of my stroke shots to execute and they could not do em. Reyes came the closest and neither of them executed the shots. Anything else you have with this is between you and Ray. Well, that should take care of the skill question... AND THIS IS MY FINAL ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. As for the heart and being able to take the heat? No money was up for them and the shots weren t executed. You re not gonna question their ability or willingness to take the heat are you? Of course not and neither would I. It s not like questioning Jay or Darin, huh? Isn t this fun!!? As for me taking the heat, you can come to the ATM... I mean the school and find answers. I am often asked, that if I have all of that who is it that I think can play? Some ask about Oregon (looking for a hero) and some ask in terms of the nation. For Oregon my list is Bill Cress and Dave Rhodes. And please don t rush to that discussion of lifestyle that you run to so readily. They didn t ask me whom I think qualified for sainthood. They asked me who could play. It s difficult to imagine a saint being able to spot you the seven ball. And in the nation, here s who could or can playGrady, Bugs and Bucktooth. My assessment includes skill, heart and management. For the rest of the questions about me, an in depth article is planned for next month. It s being written by a fellow contributor to THE BREAK and a man that promoted, managed and was close friends with Mr. Mosconi. I think that they titled it My Time With McGill. Most of the questions are kind, sincere and fun- I m sure you ll have a good time reading it and may be moved to your own questions, if so email me and I ll get an answer to you asap. Because it s a short answer, I ll tend to the question of how I describe the way I play. The answer is easy and it s fun. Please quote me, First, I fill the cue ball with ambition and then send it running around the table, looking for work. The worse the economy is, the harder it looks for work.

First, I fill the cue ball with ambition and then send it running around the table, looking for work. The worse the economy is, the harder it looks for work.

And a story about complaining: My feet are cold one says, and the legless man replies. So are mine, my friend. So are mine. do the work -- McGill
