Jennifer Kraber Wins Inaugural

Many champions and title holders were at this event, so without a doubt it would be a strong tournament to the finish. It was anybody’s guess who would take home the 1st place prize. Players from Missouri, Alabama and all over Texas brought their “A” game. The Jerry Olivier Ladies Tour is also a member of NAPT (North American Pool Tour). This stop was a qualifying event for the NAPT Division I Pro Event in August at Shooters Sports Bar and Billiards in Grayslake, IL. For more information on NAPT, be sure to check out playnapt.com.

JENNIFER Jerry Olivier, custom cue maker extraordinaire from Houston, TX rolled out the red carpet for his newly sponsored Ladies 9-Ball Tour at Skinny Bob’s Billiards, the weekend of March 10-11, 2018. Jerry won over the hearts of all the ladies of the former OB Cues Ladies Tour and brought sponsorship to a new level. It’s not very often that a Title Sponsor partakes in the tournament activities of an event but Jerry was with us all weekend, providing sponsor banners for each and every stop, personalized crystal trophies for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for each and every stop, personalized payout materials, stickers, banners plus participated in the group photo with all 58 ladies in attendance for this inaugural event. Can you spot Jerry? To quote Jerry: “It is an honor to be a part of your team. Thank you all for this opportunity! And, to all 58 Ladies that played, THANK YOU! Without you, none of this is possible. I’m looking forward to the future with this Tour”. Jerry, WE thank you for your sponsorship, friendship and most of all your genuine care and love for the game and for allowing all players to continue to flourish in our pool dreams and endeavors. We will make you proud! It was also a joy to be playing at the famous Skinny Bob’s Billiards, home of the Texas 10-Ball Open and Texas Open. Skinny Bob’s, a fan favorite billiard room, was our home all weekend and we appreciate John Cielo and his staff for taking care of us and our fans, supporters, family and friends for this fantastic showing. Like all of our tournaments, it is a two-day double elimination 9-ball tournament.

Jerry also has two players that he sponsors and they are none other than Board Members Teresa Garland and Yvonne Asher. Jerry sure knows how to pick them and besides their inner and outer beauty; they play pretty sporty as well. Congratulations to all! Rhea Brooks from Missouri was having a great tournament. She played Jennifer Kraber for the hot seat match but Jennifer, always consistent and a tough opponent to draw, defeated her 7-3. In the semi-finals match, Gail Eaton scored a rematch with Jennifer, as she narrowly defeated Rhea 7-6 to earn her right to the finals match. Great tournament showing Rhea!

Format was double elimination, race to 6, alternate breaks and rack your own, with the finals being one race to 9. (QuicSlick). 11 Players who weren’t afraid of the weather showed including John (Jack) Egeln, Max Watanabe, Nick Quaglia, Teddy “One Piece “ Lapadula and David (The Hulk) Fitzpatrick. Nick Quaglia played well above his playing capabilities and won his way to the Final match, 6-1, 6-2, and a hard fought and great match against Max Watanabe, 6-5, to make it to the Hot-seat, match to the finals. On the lower half of the bracket Mark Lamberti was making a run towards Nick. Winning two hill hill matches. He next match was against Kevin Serodio. And Mark pulled off his 3rd hill hill match in a row. On the one lose side of the bracket, John Egeln was making a push from the westside. After losing to Kevin Serodio 6-5, Egeln went on to win 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 and meeting Kevin again and advanced to the 4th place round. Down 3-1, Kevin won 6-4 after John hung a couple of 9-balls in the pockets.

On the A-B 1-lose side, Max played Jersey Mars. A great battle in this back and forth match. It all came down to the final ball with Max winning it 6-5. Max would now play Kevin Serodio and made quick work of him, winning 6-1. Max would then beat Mark Lamberti 6-4. Nick Quaglia vs. Max Watanabe went on to the final in a one race to 9! Nick jumped to an early 3-1 Lead. Then Max tied to 3-3. Nick would again jump to a 6-3 lead. Then Max got it to 6-5. Nick got to 7-5 then 8-5. Max got to 6. Niels Feijen Niels Feijen

NIELS FEIJEN is the 2018 MansionBet World Pool Master overcoming Shane Van Boening to lift the title he won for the first time in 2013. In front of a packed house at the Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar, Feijen dominated the final from the off and was delighted to collect the trophy, presented by Minister for Sport, Culture, Heritage and Youth, Mr. Steven Linares. Feijen, who had been out of the game for the best part of six months with tendonitis, had endured surgery on his arm. He missed the Mosconi Cup last December and the MansionBet World Pool Masters represented his first tournament back in the spotlight. Any doubts about his fitness were dispelled with a string of fine victories culminating in triumph in the championship match over Van Boening.

He took out Raj Hundal 8-2 in the first round before beating a very dangerous Dennis Orcollo in the quarter-final. Karl Boyes, who himself was on the comeback trail, was the deadly Dutchman’s semi-final victim. In the final, helped by four break and runs, Feijen recovered from the loss of opening rack to build up an almost unassailable 7-2 lead. However, on the verge of victory, seemingly clearing up in the tenth rack, the Dutchman missed the 5-Ball from short range. Van Boening cleared up to stay alive and placed further doubt in the mind of his opponent by smoothly breaking and running in rack 11. Yet, just when the great escape began to look on the cards for the five-times US Open champion, Van Boening broke dry in rack 12 and with a 1/9 combo sitting prettily, Feijen sealed the deal. Feijen’s win was the 17th European victory in the 25 years of the event and he was delighted with his performance; “I am pretty speechless. It has been a long ride and I would like to thank everybody who supported me, especially my wife. It is a great moment. The competition keeps me focused – I played Dennis who has beaten me eight or ten times in a row, so I had to step it up in that one. Karl is a great guy and we have had some good battles in the past so that was a great match in the semi-final, and the break started to click really well in that match. My timing was good so I thought if I keep breaking like that, I could win the whole thing. Shane is in his own league sometimes and he is a two-time winner so that gives you an extra spark, but I thought I had a real chance. I had been out for so long I knew if I could snap this thing off, it would mean a lot to me.” As well as the prestigious title, Feijen collects a pay cheque for $20,000 and an invite back into the 2019 Masters.

The Psychology of Pool 3 Signs Choking is Getting the Best of Your Pool Game DR. CHRIS STANKOVICH Dr. Chris Stankovich, known as “The Sports Doc,” is a national expert in the field of sport & performance psychology and has been featured on ESPN for his work with elite athletes. His #1 best selling pool video “Mind of Steel: Mental Toughness for Pool Success” has been used by thousands of players to improve focus, increase confidence, and eliminate anxiety. You can learn more about Dr. Stankovich and Mind of Steel by visiting drstankovich.com

Choking is a term used in sports to describe athletes who fail to live up to their potential in games when they have previously shown they can do it in practice. For pool players, an example might be a player who plays “lights out” while practicing in the pool room, but when he enters tournaments is quickly eliminated because of shots he otherwise normally makes. Choking is something every pool player should learn how to control and minimize if the goal is to reach your full potential. Amazingly, often the difference in pool (and most sports) between the better players and everyone else is the successful player’s ability to control nerves, stay focused, and quickly bounce back from adversity. Notice, what I am saying is that it’s not usually because the better players know more, but instead because they have an enormous amount of confidence that they won’t beat themselves.

MIND OF STEEL MENTAL TOUGHNESS FOR POOL SUCCESS Eliminate nerves & anxiety, beat pressure, and DOMINATE THE COMPETITION!! Streaming in HD on any device 24/7/365

Dr. Chris Stankovich DRSTANKOVICH.CINEVEE.COM www.facebook.com/onthebreaknews

Drilling deeper, here are 3 big signs that you might benefit from getting choking under control: 1. You immediately notice that your mindset changes from “playing to win” to “playing to avoid losing” when participating in tournaments and other big events. 2. While playing in competitive situations you experience abnormal nerves that you don’t experience while practicing or playing in other, less intense matches. 3. You realize that you have not

learned specific techniques to manage your nerves, and therefore regularly play below your ability in tournaments. Choking is a natural, albeit annoying, way for the body to tell us we are threatened by something. In the case of pool players, choking occurs when players fear their opponent, fear failure, or fear living up to their potential. Regardless, if pool players truly want to play their best then it is imperative to strengthen mental toughness and employ specific techniques to conquer choking. It’s important to remind yourself of the importance of distinguishing between real fear (i.e. being in harms way) versus irrational fear (i.e. being afraid of a shot on the table). Ironically, both real and irrational fear lead to anxiety, but when we really look at the fear pool players deal with it’s almost always irrational fear – the kind of fear we should be able to quickly eliminate when we think in rational ways. One simple way to gain some traction is to use cognitive techniques in the ways in which you frame situations. For example, rather than seeing a good player on your side of the bracket and then hoping you don’t play him or her, instead frame the potential match as a challenge, not a threat. Yes, this one, simple decision can make all the difference in the world. When we view life situations as challenges only then do we cull from our personal reservoir of mental strength and inevitably pay our best.

I would like to hear from you. If you have a question for me please submit to: information@drstankovich.com

Let’s Get Jumping

Tom Simpson

12

April 2018

The jump shot is becoming an important skill these days, especially for 9-Ball players. While good kicking skills and basic massé ability will get you out of many tough situations, sometimes going to “the third dimension” is really the best solution. This article will give you an overview of the subject. Balls jump all the time. Most players don’t realize it, but the cue ball actually leaves the table on almost every shot. Because pool tables have rails, the butt of the cue is always at least a little bit elevated. When the cue is elevated, you are hitting down into the ball. That downward force has to go somewhere, and the slate under the cloth is not going to move. Since the cue ball is resilient (as is the cloth), it compresses a little and then springs upward and away, leaving the table at an angle roughly equal to the angle at which it was struck. The closer your stick is to flat, the lower the jump. The more elevated the stick angle, the higher the jump. The harder you shoot, the longer the jump. The resulting jump action comes from the combination of the stick angle, how hard the ball is hit, the quality of the stroke, and the “jumpability” of the stick. So, to jump high and short, elevate steeply. To jump even higher, shoot harder. For a lower trajectory, elevate less. For a longer low flight, shoot harder. The easy way to understand how the ball jumps is to imagine you are throwing the cue ball onto the table. The angle and speed at which the ball hits the table determines the angle and distance of the bounce. Jump cues are short, to make them light in weight and to avoid hitting overhead lighting. Typically, they weigh about half of what a regular cue weighs. They usually have very hard tips and thick shafts. Jump/break cues are fullsize cues with an extra joint just in front of the wrap so you can remove the rear portion of the butt. This makes the cue lighter and shorter. Since jump/breaks serve two purposes, they have to make compromises. While they may jump better than a full cue, they may not jump as well as a cue made specifically for jumping. Decent jump cues today start at around $80. Some players jump with their shaft only. This works well, but is illegal in world standard rules, and in most leagues and tournaments. You can jump with your regular shooting cue, but just not

The Break

as easily. If you are using a low-squirt shaft (such as a Predator), a soft tip, a heavy cue ball, or thin cloth (such as Simonis), you may have difficulty getting much jumping action. There are two very different stroke techniques in jumping – “pendulum” and “dart.” The pendulum stroke is the normal (but elevated) pool stroke with the cue swinging in a pendulum arc below your elbow. The dart stroke is used when you have to elevate the cue so steeply that you can’t use the pendulum. It’s called dart stroke because it looks a lot like throwing darts – your stick swings directly above the elbow. The dart stroke is more difficult to control, but it’s necessary when you have to clear an obstructing ball that’s within a short distance of the cue ball (say, less than 6”). Here’s a tip for pendulum stroke: Bend your front elbow to allow you to stand closer to the ball and elevate the butt of the cue. Keep your forearm in the vertical plane. Surprisingly, a light grip works best. Let the stick do the work. Here’s the trick for the dart stroke: Stand tall. Pin your wrist to your chest directly under your chin, so your forearm is stable and your stroke is with your wrist & fingers only. Try to align your body and head so that your body is out of the way of your stroke and you can see down the shaft without tilting your head. Grip with thumb and forefinger, as lightly as possible, with the palm of your hand open and facing the shot. Cock your grip hand back so that your wrist is bent all the way backward. Flop your wrist forward to execute the shot. Imagine you are throwing the stick at the ball like you would throw a dart, and allow the stick to “bounce off” of the cue ball. This is a feeling – don’t actually let go of the stick. On all jump shots, take great care to strike into the center of the cue ball, or slightly below. If you hit too high on the ball, you will trap it between the tip and the table, and it will not jump. Hitting too high on the ball is the most common error, followed by timidity. Do not use any sidespin at all, unless you want to execute a jump/massé (usually a bad idea). Once you are confident in your aim and contact point on the cue ball, focus your gaze on the cue ball until you hit the shot. Strike the ball with confidence, and don’t worry about hitting the cloth. If you are not getting the ball to jump, try lightening up on your grip. Try less elevation. Try more elevation. Focus on hitting toward or just below the true center of the cue ball. Don’t hit so hard – your stroke accuracy may fall off. Be patient with yourself, especially if this is a new skill for you. It will happen. Don’t start with dramatic full-ball jumps 2” from the object ball. Start with little jumps – clear a coin, a pencil, or the edge of a ball, and work your way up. It does take some practice. For free video lessons on both pendulum and dart, visit poolclinics.com/products.html. You’ll find photos and additional instructional materials there, as well as information about the Stinger™ JumpBreak Cue. Let’s get jumping.

A FORCEFUL DOUBLE-KISS STEFANO PELINGA stefanopelinga.com

Stefano Pelinga (born 1964) hails from Rome, Italy, where he has served since 1985 as a police officer for the Italian government (Polizia di Stato), until his retirement in 2011. He began to play pool at the age of 12, drawing inspiration from his favorite singer and actor, Dean Martin. Stefano, currently a 5-time World Champion in Pool Trick Shots, won several titles in Italy in straight pool and nine-ball throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he devoted himself entirely to “Artistic Pool,” commonly referred to in its practice as “Trick Shots.” Due to his outstanding achievements, Stefano is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest Trick Shot champions in the history of the sport, and has earned a spot in ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic Hall of Fame. Most importantly, on November 17, 2012, Stefano was inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In the presence of approximately 500 VIP guests and many sports stars such as Tommy Lasorda, Mike Piazza, Tony Esposito and Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Stefano was awarded this honor, becoming a member of this group of legendary Italian Americans.

Let’s suppose one day, playing a game of 9- or 10-ball, you happen to face this situation where the lowest ball on the table is frozen at the middle of the short rail (in my diagram the Yellow Ball). Then you have a very tempting 9- or 10-ball hanging by the corner pocket F (the Blue Ball in the diagram) but there are some balls right in the middle, which prevent you from shooting a simple combination or a carom shot. The intriguing beauty of cue sports is that there is always a solution. We may not see it, even if we are good players, but there is always a way to score a point. I have the feeling that my good friend and pool legend Efren Reyes would likely call this shot as he truly is the most resourceful and creative contemporary champion.

For this shot to be possible, the Cue Ball needs to be in the area between the two red dotted lines. Aim the OB a hair to the right (no more than 9/10 of it) and use a 12 o’clock, 2.5-tip, speed-3 stroke, and a generous followthrough keeping the cue levelled. Such full impact, will have the CB and the OB double kiss and while the latter will move away heading towards the long rail, the former will bounce back until the forward spin will rapidly grab, making it curve and gain a slow forward motion towards pocket F, hopefully pocketing the 9- or 10-ball and win the game to the amazement of the viewers. I suggest to start using only one or two obstacle balls and I guarantee that this shot will still look impressive. Obviously on a newer cloth and using a clean set of balls, this shot is a little easier. Although this shot can be very frustrating, never lose your focus and learn from your mistakes. Before you bend down, always know what you are about to shoot, how much English you are going to use, how much OB you are going to aim for, how hard or soft you are going to stroke the CB. Only by knowing what you did, in case you fail, you can later fix it.

STRANGE LITTLE SHOTS

Bob Jewett

Bob Jewett

I’d say about 95% of the shots you normally encounter on the pool table are pretty standard anddull. Shoot a stop shot on the 15 and have a nice angle on the 13. Shoot the 4 down the rail with alittle outside draw and bump apart the 7-8 mini-cluster. Those are your bread-and-butter shots and you have to get them down pat if you haven’t already. But there are some other shots that come up maybe one shot in 20 that are not nearly as obvious and may even look impossible if you haven’t seen them played before. Knowing these shots and being able to play them in a game situation can continue your run when otherwise you might be looking for some kind of safe or a nearly impossible bank shot. Here are three shots that involve a little strange action along the cushion. None of these shots will come up exactly as drawn, but ifyou shoot them a few times and get a feel for them, one of them will get you out of a future tightspot. I promise. Even if you never use these in a game, you might try some, “Bet you can’t makethis shot” with your friends.

ball to pocket the 4-Ball directly. Instead, play to contact the 3 on the left side with a lot of right English. The 3 will hit the 4 a little and move it off the cushion. In the meantime, the cue ball comes off the 3, hits the cushion and the side spin makes it zip towards the 4-Ball. With a little luck and a little practice the 4 goes straight into the pocket. Softly, softly, softly. There is another way to make Shot 2 depending on exactly how the balls are sitting. That is to shoot to just miss the 3-Ball and shoot very hard. The cue ball sinks into the cushion by the 3-Ball and actually goes around it to get to the 4-Ball. This is a much lower percentage shot.

In Shot 1, the 1 is frozen to the cushion and the 2-Ball is frozen to the 1 at an angle where you can’thit quite enough of the 2-Ball to make it directly. The idea here is to use the 1 ball to reposition the 2 enough to make it. Shoot to hit just a little of the 1-Ball just before the cue ball hits the 2-Ball and shoot softly. The 1 goes into the cushion, rebounds into the 2 starting it moving just before the cue ball hits it. The cue ball straightens out the 2 and sends it along the cushion straight into the pocket. Try this with different 1-2 angles and with the cue ball close and farther from the cushion. There is a fairly wide range of positions where this shot works.

Finally, Shot 3 makes the 5 by first knocking away the 6 and then hitting it again by using plenty of right side spin on the cue ball. This shot is touchy so you will have to experiment with the distance from the cushion and approach angle of the cue ball as well as the angle the 5-6 are pointed away from the cushion. These are the kinds of shots that come up often enough if you know to look for them. They are best used in games like 8-Ball where even if they don’t go in they are likely to improve your position and if they do go in they will let your runout continue. And don’t forget about the possibility of a proposition bet with your buddies.

Shot 2 is kind of the reverse. The 3-Ball is too close to the cushion to allow the cue

INCORPORATE YOUR SENSES

Sensory pool is about playing in the present moment and staying connected to the feel of shots– not what happens after the shot is struck or the mechanics of the stroke. This is a far more effective way to play than using mechanical stroke thoughts or thinking about the score of your match.

Anthony Beeler is the 2017 Pool Instructor of the Year and is a former BCAPL National 9-Ball Champion. He has numerous top 25 national finishes and is one of only 8 ACS Master Instructors in the world. He is the primary author of the National Billiards Instructors Manual and has also authored the book Unstoppable! Positive Thinking for Pool Players. Anthony currently has the highest established Fargo Rating of any Master Instructor. He has won over 300 tournaments and has defeated numerous professional players in tournament competition.

Most pool players I work with usually have an issue of “thinking too much” while down on the shot. They’re focused solely on the consequences: “if I make this shot then, maybe I’ll win…or if I don’t, I’m going to probably lose!” They can also be pre-occupied by what they think they should do in their stroke. Sensory pool is a good solution to this particular kind of problem. Billiards isn’t like a lot of other sports where the ball is moving and you don’t have time to react. In fact, there’s plenty of time to plan in pool. But thinking is not usually a good thing when it is related to some sort of sports related physical movement. So what we focus on during our pre-shot routine is a key part of accessing the best mechanics for the shot we have decided to play. During the “conscious phase” of the pre-shot routine the player’s mind needs to be switched on. Players need to decide on the angle they have, the speed the shot needs to be struck with, and the spin necessary to attain the desired position for the next shot. Players should be thinking at least 3 shots ahead. Once a player is down on the shot, the only “thinking” that needs to be done is getting set up properly. Most professional players will aim from a standing position, then aim again and again during their practice strokes. The final aiming checkpoint is the “set position” where players take one final look to be sure their alignment matches the shot that they’re about to shoot. After this, it’s all about connecting (engaging) with the feel of the shot and focusing on that. HOW TO PLAY SENSORY POOL FEEL During the creative phase of the routine you will have mentally and physically rehearsed the shot. Focusing on “feel” involves imagining the feeling of the shot while over the cue ball.

The Break

VISUAL

Seeing the shot as vividly as possible in your mind’s eye – the cue ball and object ball’s action visualized in your mind just like a movie (outcome visualization). Seeing yourself stroke the shot and what the action looks like (process visualization). SOUND What will the shot you’re about to shoot sound like? What sound will be made when the tip hits the cue ball and it rolls across the cloth? What will the pocket sound like when the object ball goes in? WHY IS THIS EFFECTIVE? Firstly, when you are imagining a sensation (feel), you’re keeping your mind free of other possible distractions. You’re immersing yourself in the process and not thinking about possible consequences. This is important when you are playing under pressure, when your mind can easily wander and create tension or doubt. During the engagement phase, you’re giving the subconscious mind instructions using sensory pool (what it needs to do to reproduce the perfect stroke). During a fluid stroke, it’s your subconscious mind that’s the primary catalyst. You’re not thinking about how to move your arm, it’s moving naturally. Stroking without thinking (playing sensory pool) is always far better than trying to give yourself feedback during your stroke. SOME EXAMPLES: As part of my pre-shot routine, after I’ve made a few rehearsal strokes to finalize the shot line and pace, I “hold on” to that feeling and try to imagine it in my mind, right before I start my stroke. That’s when I know I’m ready to shoot. When most players talk about the consistency of their pre-shot routine, they are referring to the time it takes to go through the process. For me, it’s about the consistency of the “engagement.” It’s far more important for me to feel the tip’s interaction with the cue ball before I shoot the shot, and really connect with that feeling just a few seconds before starting my stroke. Other players might prefer the visual or some combination of both. However, feel is very important to me. During practice sessions work on developing your senses and try to find out which ones will give you the best results during match play. Make shot engagement one of your “process goals” and incorporate this into your pre-shot process.

Stefano Pelinga

Nomination for Induction into the BCA Hall of Fame Artistic pool became an official branch of the WPA in 1999 thus the above listed accomplishments written in bold largely qualify Mr. Pelinga for the “Best Player” category. In addition to all his titles, Stefano has travelled more than 2 million miles to all continents and more than 30 countries to promote cue sports via his shows and clinics. He has been given countless magazine covers, articles and interviews by international publications and TV broadcasts. He has also organized major pool events such as the very successful “World Legends of Artistic Pool” held in Kiev, Ukraine, in 2006. He has been the most featured player, along with Mike Massey, on TV, for a solid decade, competing in and winning twice ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic, giving pocket billiards unprecedented exposure. As of today, he still is one of the most recognized faces in cue sports, with thousands of fans worldwide. For these reasons, I believe Mr. Pelinga fully qualifies also for the “Meritorious” category.

I would like to bring to your attention the name of Stefano Pelinga to be considered for a future induction into the BCA Hall of Fame. I personally believe his induction is long overdue as very few people in our sport have ever accomplished what Mr. Pelinga has, or have promoted the sport like Stefano has done.

As a matter of fact, and well deservingly, Stefano Pelinga was inducted in 2012 into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame for the attention and prestige he was able to deliver to the Italian American Sports community through his many TV appearances and unique professional career.

Listed below are only some highlights of Mr. Pelinga’s 40+ years of career as a pool champion and promoter: •18 times National Trick Shot Champion, Italy (1991–2010) •1984 high run of 179 balls in straight pool •2000 ESPN Trick Shot Magic 3rd Place •2001 European Artistic Pool Runner-up •2001 ESPN Trick Shot Magic Runner-up •2002 ESPN Trick Shots Magic Runner-up •2003 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship Runner-up •2003 U.S. Open Champion, Trick Shot Division •2004 EPBF European Artistic Pool Champion •2005 ESPN Trick Shot Magic Champion •2007 ESPN Trick Shot Magic Champion •2007 ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots Champion, Team Europe (Captain) •2009 ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots Runners-up, Team Europe (Captain) •2010 ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots Champion, Team Europe (Captain) •2011 ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots Champion, Team Europe (Captain) •2013 (Argentina) Rest of the world vs. USA champion, Team Rest of the World •2016 (Las Vegas, NV) Europe vs. USA champion, Team Europe

The saying “everybody is useful and nobody is indispensable” definitely does not fit “Mr. Trick Shots”, since the cue sports world would not have been the same without such a strong asset like himself.

2018 Derby City 9-Ball Banks

The 20TH Derby City Classic started on Friday January 19th with 9-Ball Banks. The DCC consist of three events and a cumulative award, 9-Ball Banks, One Pocket and 9 Ball. Players get points for their finish in each event. The player with the most points gets Master of the Table. The events were played with CYCLOP pool balls on Diamond 9 foot tables covered with Simonis cloth, the three major sponsors. The event had a field of 470 players. The event is 9-Ball Banks, racked like 9-Ball, banks must be completely called and go clean, no contact with another ball or combinations and no kicks. The first with 5 balls wins the rack in a race to 3. The three events are each single elimination with one buy-back option in each event at the discretion of the player. There was a re-draw every round of the remaining players for the next round.

Van Boening. In round 12 Deuel eliminate Bustamante, Brumback eliminated Van Boening and Shaw eliminated Jones. Corey went into round 13 still in possession of his buy back, life line. Corey would eliminate Shaw while Brumback took a break and watched having the bye. The final was set between John Brumback, a three time DCC Banks Champion (09, 10, and 16) and Corey Deuel. Since Corey still had his buy back Brumback would have to defeat him twice to add to his title list. Brumback had added incentive having suffered his only loss at the hands of Corey in the 11th round.

The event spanned five days and fourteen rounds. There were six players after11 rounds, only one had a buy back Corey Deuel. The other five players were John Brumback, Francisco Bustamante, Troy Jones, Jayson Shaw and Shane

Corey came out firing taking the first game 5 to 1. Brumback sporting his new 3-week-old glasses, fired back in the second game 5 to 1, knotting the match at 1 all. Corey was not fazed and took the third game to get on the hill 2 – 1. Corey looked to be closing the deal in the fourth rack up 4 balls to 0. But Brumback got an opening and scored 5 balls before Corey could get that last needed ball. The match was now Hill-Hill and Brumback had the momentum. But Corey playing like it was do or die, almost like he forgot he had a buy back, took the fifth and final game 5 to 0. Congratulations to Corey Duel the 2018 DCC 9-Ball Banks Champion, his second DCC Championship, One Pocket 2013. 1st $10,000 Corey Deuel 2nd $4000 John Brumback 3rd $2875 Jason Shaw

2018 BigFoot 10-Ball Challenge

This was the sixth year for the BIGFOOT 10-ball challenge which is the only Pro event at the Derby City Classic. All of the other DCC events were Pro-Am. The event started in 2013 with Dennis Orcollo taking the opening event. Shane VanBoening took the next two in 2014 and 2015 followed by Jason Shaw in 2016 and 2017. The event is by invitation only, with sixteen professional players invited by Diamond Billiard Product to compete in the event. The event was single elimination with entry of $1,000 per player. The official rack was the Outsville 10-Ball template, WWW.Outsville. com . All of the matches were live streamed from the ACCU-STATS arena and will be available later on Vimeo on Demand by Accu-Stats at www.accustats.com . The event used a standard single elimination bracket format beginning with a random draw and was a race to 11. The Tournament director was Steve McDonald and Officiated by Ken Shuman.

The special rules of the tournament: 1) No jump sticks but you could use your shooting cue to jump. (no jumping with break cue) 2) This was not a call shot event so the Luck factor was in play 3) Alternating Brakes 4) There was a 40 second shot clock with one automatic extension per rack. Also if down on the shot before the clock expired was not a foul unless you didn’t shoot and came out of your stance. 5) This was an all ball foul event. The first round was played over two days, Friday and Saturday. The first match Friday had fellow countrymen Roberto Gomez defeating Ronnie Alcano in a hill-hill match. The second match pitted Mosconi team

The third match again highlighted the play of Fedor Gorst over Jeffrey De Luna 11 – 4. The forth match had John Morra eliminating Ruslan Chinahov 11 – 8. Monday the fourth day of DCC and the final day of the BigFoot event consisted of two semi-final matches and a final. This was the money rounds, everyone that made it to Monday was in the Money. match was a back and forth battle until Gomez took a 6 to 4 lead. Grost showing a lot of heart and shooting ability took the next 4 games for an 8 to 6 lead. Gomez showed a lot of heart and won 3 of the next 4 games to tie the match at 9 to 9. Gorst was the first on the hill but Gomez took the next game to take the match to hill-hill. Gorst broke dry in the final rack which started another safety battle. The back and forth safety battle ended with Gorst fouling on a kick shot. Gomez with ball in hand ran 8 balls to win the game and the match. The 2018 BigFoot Champion Roberto Gomez got $16,000 and Fedor Gorst, in is second Derby City Classic took home $8,000. Congratulations to Roberto Gomez the 2018 BigFoot Champion. But we are seeing a rising star in Fedor Gorst who will just turn 18 later this year.

Friday would have two events scheduled, One Pocket final rounds with 6 players remaining and 9-Ball which had started on Wednesday. The Straight Pool normally down to a play off, would see the play off canceled due to the scheduling problems. The 8 Straight Pool finalists had agreed to chop the prize fund. Round 12 of the One Pocket would see the following; Bergman issuing Daulton his first loss, Bustamante eliminating DeLuna, and Chohan eliminating Kiamco. The field was now down to 4 players and no one had a buy back. Round 13 would see Bergman and Daulton in a replay of round 12. Again, Bergman came out ahead issuing back to back losses to Daulton. Bustamante eliminated Tony Chohan in the other match.

The DCC One Pocket event started on Sunday, day 3 of the DCC. At this point in the DCC this made three active events, not counting the nightly special minis. The other active events were the third day of 9-ball Banks and the second day of the BigFoot Challenge. Sunday was also the starting day for qualifying rounds for The George Fels Memorial Straight Pool Challenge. All of this was being played on fifty 9” and one 10” Diamond tables. One Pocket had 393 players in round one. The event is a race to 3 and was scheduled for 5 days. By day five the event was in the 10th round. The field was down to eleven players. Two players would be eliminated, Roberto Gomez and Josh Roberts. Two players would emerge still possessing a buy back, Justin Bergman, who had the buy for the round, and Shannon Daulton. The remaining players with one loss were Francisco Bustamante, Tony Chohan, Jeffrey DeLuna, Justin Hall, Warren Kiamco, Dennis Orcollo and 2017 One Pocket Champion Billy Thorpe. The One Pocket finals originally scheduled for Thursday night would have to be moved to Friday and a sixth day. This was due to the large field and other

22

factors. The 11th round would be the last of One Pocket on Thursday night. Shannon Daulton got the bye which preserved his buy back to Friday. The remaining players all with one loss moving to Friday were, Justin Bergman, Francisco Bustamante, Tony Chohan, Jeffrey DeLuna, and Warren Kiamco.

April 2018

This set the table for a one match final between Bergman and Bustamante who had finished Thursday night playing each other. The Thursday night match was where Bergman had his loss. Bustamante had received his in the 8th round at the hands of Warren Kiamco. And as with the Thursday night match, Bustamante’s combination of shot making and improved one pocket skills were too much for Bergman to overcome this year. Congratulations to Francisco Bustamante the 2018 DCC One Pocket Champion. This win put Bustamante in the mix for the All-Around Champion. 1st $12,000 Francisco Bustamante 2nd $6000 Justin Bergman 3rd $3200 Tony Chohan

The 10th round started with thirteen players. The results of the 10th round were: Ruslan Chinakhov eliminating Tommy Tokoph, Joshua Filler eliminating Josh Roberts, Mika Immonen eliminating Warren Kiamco, Donny Mills sends Chris Melling to the buy back window, Dennis Orcollo eliminates John Schmidt, Shane VanBoening eliminates Jayson Shaw and John Morra had bye. There were no remaining buy backs for the 8 players in the 11th round, it was win or go home. Orcollo defeated Chinakhov, Melling defeated Filler, Van Boening defeated Immonen and Morra defeated Mills. Round 12 was the semi-final round, in the Accu-Stats arena John Morra defeated Shane Van Boening. The other semi-final match between Chris Melling and Dennis Orcollo was a long match with lots of safety play. Melling finally defeated Orcollo around 12:45 AM. John Morra had been waiting for over an hour for the final. The final was set for the Accu-Stats arena between John Morra and Chris Melling. The match started about 1:10 AM Eastern Time Sunday morning. Chris took the early lead at 3 to 2. But Chris, who had been playing back to back matches all day, seemed to stall at that point and Morra won the next 6 games, in the winner breaks format. This put Morra on the hill breaking for the Championship. He made a ball and then missed allowing

Chris back to the table. Chris having had a nice rest, sitting in his chair, most of the last 6 racks came to the table. Game after Game went to Chris and you could feel the tension in the arena that Morra just wanted one more chance. But the few times he came to the table Chris had left him without a shot or hooked. The match final got to Hill-Hill with Chris breaking. On a nice break, Chris ran the rack to become the 2018 DCC 9-Ball Champion. This had to be the sickest come back in a final that I have seen. Congratulations Chris Melling the first Englishman to win a major in the 20 years of the Derby City Classic.

2018 Derby City 9-Ball

The 9-Ball event started on Wednesday January 24th, the 6th day of the DCC with 364 players. They played 13 rounds over the last 4 days of the DCC. The 9-Ball event was a Marconi Cup point’s event as selected by Matchroom Sports. It was a race to 9; winner breaks and rack your own. The nine on the break counts. The event was a no jump cue event but jumping was allowed, with a shooting cue (no break cue for jumping). This is the only winners break event at the DCC.

The three main events are 9-Ball Banks, One Pocket and 9-Ball, occurring in that order over 9 days. The higher you finish in each event the more points you receive. Corey Deuel took the points lead in the All Around by winning the first event, 9-ball Banks. Francisco Bustamante would move to the top when he won the One Pocket event and having finished 4th in the 9-Ball Banks. Bustamante had only finished 26th in the one pocket. Justin Bergman was in the hunt having finished 9th in 9-Ball Banks and 2nd in One Pocket. He was followed by Shannon Daulton who finished 9th in 9-Ball Banks and 3rd in One Pocket. The last event of the DCC 9-Ball would be the final decider. Shane Van Boening and Jason Shaw had shots at getting there if they won the 9-Ball. Shan would end Jason’s by eliminating him from the 9-Ball in the 10th round. Shane’s departure in the semifinal of the 9-Ball locked the AllAround Championship for Francisco Bustamante. The All-Around Championship finished as follows: 1st $20,000 Francisco Bustamante - $20,000.00 2nd $3000 Justin Bergman - $3,000.00 3/4th $1000 Corey Deuel, Shane Van Boening

Happy Hour: Mon-Fri 4-7PM l-r: Scott Frost, Tyll Donnie Metz (accepting for Eugene “Clem” Metz), Sonya Martin (accepting for Charles “Country” Martin), Jeremy Jones and Keith McCready

The One Pocket Hall of Fame, as the One Pocket Website ONEPOCKET.ORG is a labor of love by Steve Booth. The Hall of Fame dinner has been missing from the DCC for the last two years, 16 and 17. The Hall of Fame doesn’t just honor One Pocket it also includes Banks and Lifetime Pool in Action players. This year there were no inductees for banks just One Pocket and Lifetime Pool in Actions. The dinner was on Wednesday night, to not conflict with any DCC event finals. As always there was a great gathering of players and friends. The original Masters of Ceremony’s, Freddy “The Bead” Bentivegna and Grady “The Professor” Mathews, were missed having passed away in 2014 and 2012. The new Co-Masters of Ceremony’s, Scott Frost and Shannon Daulton, represented well and did a great job. The One Pocket inductees were Jeremy Jones and Eugene “Clem” Metz. Most people know Jeremy for winning the US Open 9 in 2003 but he can hold his own in any pool curriculum as well as being a top commentator. Eugene “Clem” Metz, who passed in 2011, was represented by his son Tyll Donnie Metz. Numerous players and friends took to the stage to tell stories about “Clem”. The two players honored for Lifetime Pool In Action were Charles “Country” Martin and Keith McCready. “Country” passed away December 26, 2017 and was represented by his Daughter Sonya Martin. As with “Clem”, numerous players told stories about “Country” that put smiles on everyone’s faces and made your heart warm. The evening finished off with one of the best know charters of pool Keith “Earthquake” McCready. Keith is known for his great pool shooting and his part in the movie, “The Color of Money”. At 61 years young, Keith is still spouting stories and challenges. He announced he had 18 hours to play and would take on any players with the right game. All in all, it was great to have the Hall of Fame back and everyone had a great time. To read more about the players and to see video of the HOF Dinner, visit OnePocket.ORG. Thanks to Steve Booth for all he does, and we hope more people lend their support.

The 23rd Annual Western BCA 8-Ball Championships on March 1118, 2018 gave new meaning to the phrase “the largest regional 8-Ball Tournament in the Country”. These are but some of the records that were shattered at this event: 1. $45,000 - most added money at any Western BCA event. 2. 1554 – most players attending. 3. 2641 – total entries. 4. $176,640 – total payouts. Needless to say, we surely made our presence known both at Chinook Winds Casino Resort and throughout the local community in the one

Gold Scotch Doubles - Irina Chmil & Chris Byers elimination and limited to 64 entries) that was to start at 1pm. No wanting to play into the wee hours with Scotch Doubles starting at 9am on Sunday, the 3rd and 4th place matches were worked in on Sunday and the final was played on Monday evening. When it was all over, Robert Niemeyer/NPL finished in 4th place/$180 and Damian Pongpanik/LTD in 3rd/$300. The final between Paul Marquez/NPL and

Platinum Scotch Doubles - Clay Belvoir & Mary Beth Johnsen way that is quantifiable – economically. It goes without saying that we have long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with our host venue and the surrounding geographical area and can only hope it will continue long into the future. Unfortunately, with rapid growth comes growing pains, so the issues resulting from these record numbers will have to be addressed at some point. It was obvious from Fun Day on that this event was going to be somewhat different than past events. The only thing that didn’t change was the number of 7’ Diamond tables BadBoys Billiards Productions was able to load into the tournament rooms. Fun Night became Fun Day, with the doors opening at 9am on Saturday morning and the rooms filling fast, largely due to the addition of a sponsored Open Handicapped 10-Ball Singles Tournament ($1000 added, double

Jason Hecock/LTD rammed home the “anything can happen” aspect of a handicapped contest. Paul raced to 7 while Jason raced to 3. Jason, playing very well, won the first set 3-5 and wore Paul down in the second to take 1st place/$760. Paul, gracious to the end, accepted 2nd place/$440. The traditional Handicapped 10-Ball Singles (single elimination) started at 7pm with 47 players, up from 22 in October. This tournament also

2. All teams – scotch and 4/5 player – were subject to FargoRate caps and grouped accordingly. 3. All Singles divisions were non-gender-specific. No more Men’s or Women’s divisions. Overall, things went very well and everyone got along. Is some tweaking needed? Undoubtedly, as with any new system. Will the day come when scotch and team events will be fully Fargotized? We’ll see. The Championships themselves, plodded along with more entries in the same amount of time and each division fell behind to some extent. Only Gold Scotch Doubles finished on time with Platinum finishing on Monday and Silver not until Thursday. Of the singles divisions, only the Chinook Winds Elite was on time with all the others finishing on Thursday but some, well into the morning hours. Teams, well,

Chinook Winds Elite Singles - Stan Tourangeau ran long and had to finish up on Sunday. Finishing in 5-8th/$75 were Michael Atkisson/RCBC, Michael Koch/YAK, Sue Frisbie/COB and Joe Reynard/NPL. 3/4th/$125 were Pat O’Meara/MTV and Somerfield Habener/EV. 2nd/$250 went to Kenny Dodd/CC and 1st/$390 went to Joel Peck/EV. There were Minis galore which, for the first time, were sponsored with at least $50 added to each and were, needless to say, very popular.

Silver I Singles - Christy Barsky they had no choice but to play out on Sunday. One thing is for sure, changes have to be made if Western BCA is to fit this many players into this many days, not play until very late at night and get all the finals streamed. There were, of course, 2nd Chance Tournaments for most divisions. Here are the winners: •Platinum Scotch (10): 1st place/$120 – Paul Ward/Sheila Clark (INL) •Gold Scotch (25): 1st place/$200 – Doug Lowe/Levona Lowe (LTD) •Silver Scotch (25): 1st place/$200 – Rocke Bell/Angel Modaff (EV)

Platinum Singles - Kevin Robitaille All in all, Fun Day was a monumental success, thanks to our generous sponsors: Littmen Lights, Snuffy’s Pawn Shop, Horse and Home Realty, JamUp Apparel, Rose City Billiards Club and Players Club Limited. Now might be a good time to mention possibly the biggest contributing factor in the dramatic changes in the tournament events that came next – FargoRate. More firsts: 1. All players were placed in singles divisions by FargoRate Number just prior to the event.

The West Coast Women’s Tour (TWCWT) completed Stop #8 of their 2017-2018 season on the weekend of January 20-21, 2018 at Billiard Palacade in San Francisco. We were welcomed by Elizabeth Murcia in the absence of her father Francisco Murcia. This is one of our newest sponsors from 2017. Last year we had 27 players participants at the Billiard Palacade stop. This year, we had 30 players, with 2 new players joining us. Billiard Palacade runs different leagues and tournaments regularly. They have 3 carom tables, 13 regulation 9’ pool tables, and 2 7’ pool tables. They have drinks at good prices and you can’t ignore the great Salvadorian tamales. At this stop, Billiard Palacade donated $650 towards the players’ pot. We appreciate their donation! For our first bracket, we had a new player to the tour make her presence felt. Crystal Kelem (6) won matches against Dorothy Lam (5), Sara Thomas (6) and Gigi Callejas (7) all with the same score of 6-2. Her average would be adjusted for Sunday morning matches to a 7. Katie Murphy (7) would defeat our second new player Radhika Marini (6), Alice Loo (6), and Motoko Siquenza (6). Pagulayan, Aranas, Isaac & Chohan

West Monroe, LA was the place to be on March 16-23, 2018 for the 2nd Annual Scotty Townsend Memorial Tournament. It was hosted at Arena Billiards by owners Josh Hoff and Trey Funderburg. There were lots of heavy hitters in the building including John Morra, Jeremy Jones, Cliff Joyner, Billy Thorpe, Danny Smith, Tony Chohan, Sky Woodward, Josh Roberts, Shane McMinn, Charlie Bryant, George Breedlove and last week’s White Diamonds champ Tommy Tokoph. Other well-known names included Can Salim, Alex Olinger, Chip Compton, Mike DeLawder, Jason Klatt, Robb Saez, John Hennessee, Devin Poteet, Chuck Raulston, Ernesto Bayaua, Sergio Rivas, Alex Calderon, Joey Gray, Kevin Guimond and Buster Merchant. Filipino stars Francisco Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan, Dennis Orcollo and the young gun, James Aranas, were also in the field.

Orcollo over to the other side as did Morra over Bryant, Pagulayan over Guimond as well as Gray over Raulston. Fifth round saw Saez beat Thorpe, Aranas defeat Olinger, Pagulayan knock off Gray and Morra came out on top over Roberts. Sixth round saw only killers left as Aranas defeated Saez while Pagulayan beat Morra to set up the hot seat match.

James Aranas Tony Chohan

Hot seat action was fierce but when the smoke cleared it was James over Alex 9-6. Alex headed west to await the results of the Smith-Olinger match.

The eight-day poolfest started with a 32-player $500 added, $100 entry ring 10-ball game. Tony Chohan defeated Danny Smith for top honors with Alex Pagulayan in third, Robb Saez in fourth while Francisco Bustamante and Dennis Orcollo finished in a fifth-place tie. How’s that for a star-studded finish!

By mid-match, Olinger led Smith 5-3 but Danny kept grinding to take the win. This set up the match to see who would face James in the finals. The match started out tight until it was tied at 3-3. Danny won one more game but was all Alex as he marched to a rematch with the young Filipino – 7-4.

The next day, 128 players put up their $75 entries for the $5,000 added Open 9-Ball event. Being played on bar boxes, the format was alternate break, rack your own, no 9 in racking corners, races to 9/7. Non-pro ladies got a game on the wire.

Since this was a true double elimination tournament, the Lion would have to defeat the Dodong Diamond twice to take the title. The young Aranas has been knocking at the door for quite a while and he had a tough hill to climb in his opponent as Alex led the match 8-6. Everyone was thinking there would be a second set but hungry for a big win, James fought back to an 8-8 tie and then went on to snatch the victory and the title from a stunned Pagulayan. Congratulations to James for taking it down! Great job! Alex had to settle for a runner-up finish with Smith in third and Olinger in fourth. Good tournament, guys!!!

First round action saw a few tough match-ups: Danny Smith sent Can Salim packing, Chohan did the same to DeLawder and Orcollo beat McMinn. Second round saw Aranas defeat compatriot Bustamante, Olinger bested Joyner, Bayaua trimmed Raulston, Gray nipped Calderon, Chohan sent Compton west, Thorpe over Poteet and Bryant over fellow Texan, Jones. Things tightened up in the third round as Raulston upset Woodward, Gray defeated Rivas, Saez came out on top with Klatt while Orcollo took care of the legendary Merchant. Fourth round action had Aranas defeating Hennessee, Olinger beating Smith, Roberts sending

As in the 9-ball, Alex was looking for a rematch and tore through Chohan with an identical score of 4-0 leaving Tony in third. The finals started with a 1-1 tie but slowly Alex pulled away to 4-1. Blanco mounted a comeback, with wins over Ramirez, 6-1, and Briones, 6-4, while Mark Galicia overcame Torres, 6-4, but fell to Bautista, 6-2. Clearly, Bautista was on a mission, eliminating Blanco, 6-2, then Yniguez, 6-3, earning himself a shot at Chau, and the title. In the first set, Bautista raced around the table, and balls flew in the pockets from every angle. Before he knew it, Chau had lost the first set, 6-0. In the second set, it was as if the players had traded places. Now, it was Chau who raced around the table, breaking and running out, from all possible positions. In the end, Chau firmly answered back, 6-0, to win his second, Tour victory of 2018.

Raphael DaBreo Notches First Predator ProAm Win

It is a significant rite of passage; moving from the top ranks of Amateur status to the loftier competitive environment where the Open/Pro players do battle. On the weekend of March 3-4m 2018, at a $250-added Open/Pro event on the Predator Pro Am Tour, Raphael Dabreo took that step, winning his first-ever Open/Pro event, and according to tour director Tony Robles, was “super happy about it. Like a kid in a candy store,” said Robles. Competing as a B player, DaBreo won his first stop on the TriState Tour in 2008 and a year later won two more on the tour. He won his first stop on the Predator ProAm in 2010. Over the next eight years, he chalked up a baker’s dozen (13) more on the two tours, as he climbed the rankings ladder. He paid his dues and now reaps the reward. DaBreo advanced to a winners’ side semifinal versus Jimmy Rivera in this recent event, while Joey Korsiak and Zion Zvi squared off in the other one. Korsiak got by Zvi 7-4. DaBreo battled Rivera to a deciding game, before Rivera sent him to the loss side. Korsiak claimed the hot seat 7-4 over Rivera and waited on DaBreo’s return. On the loss side, DaBreo picked up Robles, who’d defeated Victor Nau 7-3 and Mike Salerno 7-2 to reach him. Zvi drew Jorge Teixeira, who’d gotten by Yesid Garibello 7-3 and Dave Shlemperis 7-1. DaBreo got by Robles 7-4, as Zvi eliminated Teixeira 7-2.

DaBreo, apparently very motivated to collect his first Open/Pro title, chalked up two straight double hill wins to get a shot at Korsiak in the hot seat. He downed Zvi in the quarterfinals, and then, Rivera in the semifinals. A 9-5 win over Korsiak in those finals secured DaBreo’s first Open/Pro win. In the $750-added Amateur event over the weekend, Lukas Fracasso-Verner went undefeated through a field of 53 entrants to claim the title. Both events were hosted by The Spot in Nanuet, NY. A Second Chance event drew eight entrants. It was won by Wax Watanabe, who defeated Rich Hourihan in a double hill final. Watanabe pocketed $100, while Hourihan took home $50.

Fracasso-Verner Unbeaten in Amateur Division

Last February, at the age of 15, Lukas Fracasso-Verner became the second-youngest player to ever win a stop on the Predator Pro Am Tour; the first, being Thomas Rice, who, at 14 won a stop on the tour in 2013. What was particularly significant about Fracasso-Verner’s victory at the time was that he’d won 13 loss-side matches to meet and defeat the hot seat occupant, Atif Khan. Fracasso-Verner, now 16, chalked up another victory, this time going undefeated through a field of 53. He advanced through the field to a winners’ side semifinal against Rhio Anne “Annie” Flores, while Adam Miller met up with Feng Zhao in the other winners’ side semifinal. Miller downed Zhao 7-3, while Fracasso-Verner and Flores locked up in a double hill battle that did eventually send Flores to the loss side. Fracasso-Verner then downed Miller 9-5 to claim the hot seat.

On the loss side, Zhao picked up Suzzie Wong, who’d gotten by Greg Matos 6-3 and won a double hill match against Matthias Gutzmann. Flores drew Mark Zamora, recent double hill winner over Ocheign Carlos and Max Watanabe 7-5. The ladies advanced to the quarterfinals; Wong, over Zhao 7-2, and Flores over Zamora 7-4. The ladies then locked up in a double hill fight, won by Wong. Miller took the semifinal 6-3 over Wong. Fracasso-Verner completed his undefeated run

ALEJANDRO CALDERONE AND SKYLER WOODWARD assistant, Ileana Ford, kept things running smoothly. After plenty of action, Sunday night whittled down to fourth place finisher Robb Saez while Kevin Guimond came in third. Kelly Isaac took down last lady money. Woodward, looking to claim his fourth Sidepocket Open title, needed to beat the undefeated Alex Calderon twice. Sky won the first set in a squeaker, 7-6. The second set started out neck and neck until Sky pulled away and reached the hill first – 6-4. Alex was not about to give up easily as he went on to tie it at six apiece. One game for it all and Alex was breaking! Alex made two balls on the break but was faced with no easy shot on the one with a two-nine combination along the side rail. He attempted to bank the one but sold out leaving Sky with a medium-tough shot on the one and a medium-tough shot on the combo. The fans sure got their money’s worth as Sky pocketed the case nine to claim his fourth consecutive title! Congratulations, Sky! Good tournament, Alex! Van Boening Grabs US Open One Pocket Title

CueSports International, Henderson, NV (Mar. 30, 2018) ---

Shane Van Boening captured another US Open title, making an undefeated run to win the US Open One Pocket Championship on Sunday in Las Vegas. The US Open One Pocket Championship started March 23, 2018 at Griff’s in Las Vegas, NV. CueSports International added $5,000 to the One Pocket Championship and $2,500 to the Bank Pool Championship, which Van Boening also won earlier in the week.

Van Boening swept through the 29-player field, giving up only three games during the entire tournament. His path included wins over: Jay Helfert, 4-0; Nick Beretanos, 4-1; Dee Adkins, 4-0; Ronnie Alcano, 4-0; before beating Oscar Dominguez, 4-1, to capture the hot seat. Alcano, of the Philippines, would meet Van Boening in the final. Alcano bested: Jimmy Moore, 4-0; Wayne Pullen, 4-1; and Gus Briseno, 4-3, before Van Boening put in him the loser’s bracket, 4-0. On the B-side of the bracket, Alcano beat: Warren Kiamco, 3-2; Brandon Shuff, 3-1; and Dominguez, 3-1, to captured a spot in the finals. During the finals, Van Boening played nearly perfect, keeping tight control of the table. Alcano won just one game in the single-race-to-five finals format.

PERFORMANCE

MAKES ALL OF THE DIFFERENCE The most important factor in cue ball deflection is cue end mass. Katana shafts use a ferrule that is half the length with thinner walls to reduce the amount of cue ball “squirt” during play.

7 Responsive Top Layers

3 Foundation Layers

The top 7 layers are medium density boar hide, tanned naturally up to 12 months to achieve maximum control and consistency.

The bottom 3 layers are high density pig skin, selected for its premium durability and legendary feel.

KATANA PERFORMANCE SHAFT TECHNOLOGY 10-Piece Spliced Radial Construction The grain in a solid wooden shaft creates a natural spine which affects how the cue ball reacts to impact. Rotating the cue, even a quarter turn, will change how the shaft performs. By splitting the shaft into ten sections and alternating the direction of the grain, Katana removes natural variances and provides lower deflection and more consistent results.
