On Tuesday May 4th Sam’s Hollywood Billiards and Loaves & Fishes MealsOn-Wheels hosted from 6:30 to 9:30PM a Pool Tournament. For everyone enjoying a beverage or dinner, ½ the proceeds benefited the Hollywood Meals-On-Wheels program. It was a great neighborhood-friendly event. The pool tourney was a success, a good time was had by all! Since 1970, Loaves & Fishes has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through on-site dining at 14 centers in Multnomah and eastern Washington counties and Meals-On-Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of 350 volunteers the non-profit agency now serves about 4,000 meals each day - that’s nearly 1 million meals a year. Loaves & Fishes Centers will serve even more seniors as Portland’s aging population grows. The Hollywood center @ 1907 NE 45th serves about 160 seniors daily on our Meals-On-Wheels routes, who are at risk of isolation and malnutrition. We also serve about 30 seniors M-F in our dinning hall. All this done by 25 volunteers a day, Mary Langman (Center Manager) and a cook. If anyone would like to volunteer or make a donation to the Hollywood MealsOn-Wheels program you can reach Mary Langman at 503-281-8109. The Hollywood Meals-On-Wheels program would like to extend a special Thanks to Valerie at Sam’s Billiards. You can get more info about Loaves & Fishes at: www.loavesandfishesonline.com. OTB

LAS VEGAS, NV - May 24, 2004 I had the opportunity to speak with Mark Griffin after the BCA Nationals in Las Vegas, so he could give his side of the sale of the BCA leagues and bring us all up to speed with what he plans. D“C”A: The questions that I am giving you have been compiled from feedback that I’ve gotten from players and league operators in my area and other sources, people that I have know throughout the years. They have some valid concerns as a lot of the players do, and I’m sure you have addressed a lot of them this past week. MG: Yes, I did and a lot of times the meetings were on an emotional note. D“C”A: From the meetings that you had in Vegas this past week what did you come away with, the feeling from Mark Griffin the players, from league operators and just basically in general? MG: I think the biggest thing is their feelings are hurt by the way the BCA handled the sale. Nobody can disagree that the BCA handled the sale very poorly. But you have to understand that the BCA hired a professional broker, and at that point it’s the broker’s job to get the word out and chase down the leads, whatever, that’s his job. And that’s where they keep saying, “Well you should have told all …” They didn’t realize that I had nothing to do with it. The BCA should have contacted all the league operators and told them the league was going to be for sale. I don’t know if that’s right or wrong. It’s (Mark Griffin continued on page 4)

Mark Griffin Talks water under the bridge, nothing we can do about it now except rebuild everything. D”C”A: The players and the league operators feelings are hurt, they feel betrayed basically, in the feedback that I’ve gotten. You are the target because you are the owner now. MG: I’m not even sure that I’m the target in that respect. I can’t change the past. I have to try to make them feel with a degree of assurance that I have their interest at best. A lot of the turmoil is being intentionally stirred by certain individuals. They are intentionally putting stuff out that is not true, to add fuel to the fire. D”C”A: One of the concerns that I had found out was that there hadn’t been a player representative on the BCA board for at least 2 years. MG: There’s a room operator representative. There is not a player rep on the board now. Myself and Greg Hunt are the two room operators and that’s why we were both opposed to the sale. That would impact the room operators more than anything else. It’s in their home room, so to speak, but I’m going to probably agree with you but for 2 years I don’t know. There is not a player rep right now. D”C”A: Are you going to have on your board a player rep? MG: My board is going to be an advisory board and everybody will be sensitive to the players side. There will be some players, there will be some referees, some instructors. It won’t be manufacturers unless they are planning on wearing another hat that directly relates to the players. That’s the only thing my board will be made of. I don’t have a real number yet, I’m still soliciting volunteers and suggestions. I’ve got a whole pile of names and for the next month or so, I’ll start contacting them. It’ll probably be about a 12 – 16 person board. Then the question comes up – there’s a lot of things I don’t know, but I try to have people around who I know can get the answers, kind of a “go to” guy. So if somebody says, “Why don’t we have a tournament, or another tournament, or whatever, or do this or do that.” I’ll use these guys and/or other people to decide, for example, the question of who is a master and who isn’t. I’m terribly upset at some of the things that happened this year. I don’t know if you’ve heard about them or not. It was ridiculous. The BCA, when John Lewis was making the rules and regulations for the leagues altered the definition of “master” and people were bouncing all over the place from the Open to the Masters and back again. It’s not fair to the Open players. I’m really going to be monitoring that one as closely as I possibly can. Open players should be playing Open players. D”C”A: Are you still on the BCA board? MG: I am – as a room owner representative and you realize that I was not … and the BCA was extremely sensitive to this … I

June 2004

wasn’t even involved on the vote as to whether to sell the league. I said strongly, “Do not sell them etc. “ and I excused myself from the room and that’s the last discussion I have ever had in any meeting, on the league sale. D”C”A: There has been a rumor going around through emails that there was a conspiracy from the board and someone or some ones on the board wanted to sell the BCA leagues. I’m wondering if there’s any truth to that? For somebody’s personal or professional agenda? MG: Not that I’m aware of. The board is made up of its own people and there were 14 board members, 3 of us were excused from the room. D”C”A: Who were the other two excused?

the Metro section in Las Vegas, some local charity had two and a half million dollars unaccounted for. That’s a ludicrous statement. That shows somebody’s not paying attention to reality. The structure means absolutely nothing to the integrity of the business. And most people think that non-profits are very prevalent but all large sports groups are organized as for-profit: Golf, Tennis, Nascar … you name it. All those things are organized as a forprofit and purses and salaries did not get large until the sport became successful as a for-profit. I just think it’s a hollow, feel good argument. I don’t think it has any validity and I think that’ll be known. Look here, the BCA is non-profit and they have a board. That’s the other part of dealing with a non-profit. They have

www.bcapoolleague.com MG: I excused myself. Greg Hunt excused himself, because at the very beginning when it was first announced that the leagues might be sold, he said he might be interested. Rene Pohlman of the APA was excused and probably just because of the conflict issue, with her position and being on the board. All three of us were never involved in those discussions. D”C”A: When this first came out a couple of months ago to the public, there was a lot of talk about nonprofit versus for-profit, what is your view on that and why didn’t you go non-profit? MG: There’s a couple of reasons why I didn’t go non-profit. First of all, I’m not non-profit. I think it’s a hollow argument. It’s not whether you’re forprofit or non-profit it’s what is the direction of the entity. You can have a lousy board and keep running in circles or you can have a very good sole proprietor that keeps the straight and narrow. There’s an interesting article that says for-profit also has the potential to be for-loss. There’s no assurance that a forprofit organization makes a profit. The only difference between a nonprofit and a for-profit for its structure is the for-profit pays taxes and in theory the non-profit doesn’t. There are no incentives, the real incentive is for the for-profit venture. I first said and I have said everyday since, I will not make a dime off of league operation. So in essence, I am a non-profit. However, I’m structured in the for-profit and a lot of that is just for the purpose of operation. I heard that the ACS made the statement that, “You never have to question the motives of a non-profit.” I’m sorry, but I just cannot buy that sentence. It’s just not true. You have hundreds of non-profits every year that get in all kinds of trouble, misappropriating funds, expensive salaries, benefits, all kinds of things. I have to laugh when two months ago all this for-profit, non-profit stuff started erupting, that same day in

boards and boards get political. That’s just a fact of life and their right intentions are not on the same sheet usually. A prime example is the Billiard Congress of America. It was founded as a players association in 1948 and now it’s a trade association. They had a complete turn over the last 50 years. There is nothing to say that that won’t happen again. D”C”A: It’s my understanding that you can use the BCA name for three years? MG: Yes D”C”A: Then you have to change it? MG: No and possibly longer, it’s still under negotiation. I HAVE to use certain portions of the name for 3 years because of the national championship. There is still some legal mumbo-jumbo going on. Again, the name isn’t a critical factor. D”C”A: It is if it’s something people identify with and with the 60-80,000

The

players across the country, when you mention what league you’re in (whether if its BCA, APA, VNEA or TAP) there is a name recognition and rules that are being played. MG: I pointed this out in one of our meetings, so everybody says it has to stay BCA, that’s fine but what if Nike comes rolling down the street and says, “You know, we think we’re going to sponsor this pool tournament you’ve got or this pool league and I’m going to add $2 million a year but you’ve got to change the name to the Nike Pool League.” or something. Hopefully that day will come. D”C”A: I think part of the concern on the players part and league operators was that maybe you’d change it to Diamond because of your affiliation, because of you bringing in the Diamond tables next year or the year after, which would make perfect sense. MG: I’ve said this from day one (on my website in Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)) April 2nd when I put this out. What tables will be used? Valley tables in 2005 and Diamond thereafter. Will there be a Diamond League? Absolutely not. Diamond tables will continue to be available to all leagues. Will leagues or state associations be required to use Diamond tables? No. All league and state associations will be free to use ANY table they prefer. You can play on a Sears table. This is just people in hysteria. I’ve said it from day one. There will never, ever, ever be any pressure, any requirement, to play on any tables. D”C”A: My question was whether the name would be changed? The table you use – you can still keep those rules there that they can play on any table, because it would immediately limit the number of locations and I think you see that and understand that. But at nationals you’d be on Diamonds after ’05 but the name being Diamond League or the Diamond League of BCA or whatever configuration you could come up with would seem to be a natural trend to go to. MG: Nobody’s ever asked that question before. They all are saying “is there going to be a Diamond league?” and I’ve always answered that no one will ever be required, so that’s an interesting question. (Mark Griffin continued on page 28)

Billiard Participation Tops 40 Million Ranks 6th according to Superstudy of Sports Participation from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

Colorado Springs, CO - Billiards again ranks high as one of America’s favorite sports according to the Superstudy of Sports Participation conducted by American Sports Data, Inc. Only five activities (bowling, treadmill exercise, fishing, stretching and tent camping) had more participants in 2003. In 2003, 40.7 million people, age six

and older, played billiards at least once in 2003, up 3% from 2002 and higher than billiard’s 1993 peak of 40.3 million players. Participation declined in the second half of the 90s, but has shown steady growth since 2000. “Billiards can be played year round, by all ages in a wide variety of settings,” said Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Executive Director Stephen Ducoff. “The BCA is leading an industry-wide effort to

make pool everybody’s game, and we’re definitely heading in the right direction. The manufacturers, retailers and room operators are doing a tremendous job meeting customer demand for high-quality products and bringing more people into the sport through youth programs and league play.” According to the study, bowling experienced growth of 3.5%, with over 55 million participants in 2003 and table tennis posted a 5.6% gain,

with 13.5 million participants. Of the four indoor sports tracked, only darts was off (-1.1%), with 19.5 million participants. Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort A-N-B Vending Hosts Pool Tournaments From: Daniel Burdick

Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort in Canyonville, OR hosted the 2nd annual BCA 8-Ball Challenge, sponsored by A-N-B Vending. This competition was open to all players, novice, open and masters; it included two scotch doubles events, two singles events and one team event and was played by BCA rules. Danny and Penny Burdick, owners of A-N-B Vending, put an additional $2,000 in to the pay-outs, on top of all the entry money from the original planned tournament. There were 158 players total for the different divisions being held which left enough room on Fri. the 16th & Sun. the 18th to hold a second bonus tournament with no additional entry money and $1,000 added to give the players a second chance to win even more money. (THAT’S A TOTAL OF $3,000 ADDED MONEY) Sunday boasted an open 1st Women’s Novice Terri Trombetta scotch doubles tourney allowing anybody to pair up as scotch doubles partners either all male, all female or mixed it didn’t matter, the only limitation was that there be only 1 master per team. This event was planned to give the players a place to compete at and to be able to play on some of the best equipment that there is to offer. Danny has commented that this area needs more competitive pool for the amateur and master players and Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort is the ideal central location for shooters in several regions who can’t make it to those farther away tournaments either because of work or the expense. Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort offers a lavish, top of the line convention center that gladly welcomes pool players from all over the country. Danny already has another 9-ball singles event & 3 different divisions of scotch doubles all in one tournament scheduled for August 1315; this one will be a special Scotch Doubles Tournament, with regular mixed couples, a women’s only event, and an open pairs event. For more info you can go to BCA2000.net. Winning big this week were Nelsin Iriarte and Amy Tibbets, from Eureka, CA; Nelsin Iriarte won the Open Division over a field of 35 with Art Dillahay taking 2nd & Adam Johnston taking 3rd and trying not to be out done by his

brother but falling just shy of the mark was Steve Dillahay who placed 4th. Taking 1st place in the Women’s Open with a big smile on her face was Debi Hollander, she worked real hard for the title but she got there over Amy Tibbets who took 2nd and Cindy Sarti who placed 3rd in the Women’s Open in a small but strong field of 10 women. Nelsin Iriarte & Amy Tibbets along with Barney & Patty LaMontagne tied for first in the Scotch Doubles event. Barney & Patty had a family emergency come up before they were to play their finals match so Nelsin & Amy in honor of good sportsmanship along with the LaMontagne’s decided to split $625.00, the 1st & 2nd place prize money so the family emergency could be taken care of, good job and thanks for working it out. I think that there should also be a big round of applause given to Michael & Sue McClure for 3rd place, the field of players they had to fight their way through wasn’t easy and they did a great job, congratulations! In the Master’s Division Barney LaMontagne even though his mother and stepfather were just in a car accident but ok, (which was the emergency in Scotch Doubles) managed to still take 1st place in grand style beating Randy Rothrock who took 2nd and Sam Kalama who placed 3rd. Earlier in the tournament Barney had played Darrold Crain (who did take 4th place in the Master’s Division) and in a race to 7 Barney only missed one ball, excellent shooting!! Terri Trombetta was a strong novice player, winning both of the women’s novice tournaments that were held, for taking first place twice she earned 1st Masters Singles Barney LaMontagne a total of $250. Placing 2nd in the Women’s Novice was Diane Brending and following up with 3rd place is Wilma Morotz. Placing 4th and probably having the most fun out of all of us was Bonnie Carpenter she was laughing and having a ball every time I turned around, good shooting & good luck in the Open Division. For the Men’s Novice Division there was Max Ervin in 1st place, Bill N. took 2nd and George Landers brought home 3rd, Pete Angel worked the field to get 4th place, Corey Fuhrman took 5th and Craig Sarver wound up in 6th and with money in hand and a smile for the fine job all of the novice players in both divisions did those that cashed in the money for both Men’s & Women’s Novice Divisions must move up to the Open Division to keep players moving up in their skill levels and to make it fair for the remaining novice players to compete. The Team Event was the most exciting out of all of the events to watch, there were a lot of tight matches with plenty of adrenalin to keep you on the edge of your seat. A team called Highly Overrated took the Big Dogs all the way to a hill-hill match with the Big Dogs eventually coming out on top. The Lord of the Strokemasters took charge in the drivers seat game against the Big Dogs in the fourth round of p l a y , starting that round they were down but lost only 1 out of 5 games in that round and took the lead 11-9 and never looked back beating the Big Dogs for the hot seat. The Big Dogs also took another match to hill-hill against Yukon Jack’s Outlaws and came out on top after Jeff Haakinson buried the 8-ball to win the 13th and deciding game. In the finals the Big Dogs had to beat the Lord of the Strokemasters twice to get their hands on the $700 first place prize money and as if they had been saving their best for last the Big Dogs showed everybody that they weren’t messing around. They handed The Lord of the Strokemasters their 1st lost with a score of 13-7 and for the second match the Big Dogs were still all fired up and The Lord of the Strokemasters couldn’t keep them on the porch, losing the last match 13-4. A-N-B Vending would like to thank Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort for its superb and unparalleled hospitality your awesome!! We would also like to thank Jessi of Beads & Billiards for her expert cue cleaning, sales and advice. Ron Smith from Costco for donating prizes awarded to the players throughout the tournament and for bringing all of the delicious free cake and of course a big thanks to all of those who also helped out with the tournament, Rick Moore, Rebecca Easley, Nicola Davies, Bernie Brown, Mark Fenn and Sonny Boggs. There’s always more people to mention just can’t fit them all in, but most definitely a huge THANK YOU to the pool players who came and supported this event & even those who could help pass the word or even a flyer. This month’s Artistic Shot is from the trick and or fancy discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 8. Although this looks like an easy set up shot it isn’t. Depending on the newness and quality of cloth on the table the two A balls may need to be adjusted as much as one full ball up towards the center of pocket E. Let’s look at the set up of this shot. The A ball that is closest to cushion #3, the long rail, is one balls width from cushion #3 and the right edge is flush to the point of E pocket. The second A ball is frozen with allowance for the throw effect to pocket A. The C ball is centered between the pocket points. You have the cue ball in hand or as the diagram suggests. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball into the closest A ball then the cue ball travels 3 cushions to C ball. You must make all 3 object balls as pocket letter designated. The first hit A ball banks around the other A ball and goes first in pocket A. A scratch is allowed and the cue ball may contact an extra cushion by the C ball. Here are a few helpful hints. When shooting this shot on new cloth I move the pair of A balls up towards the center of E pocket one full ball. Now A ball by cushion #3, it’s left edge is flush with the left point of E pocket. My cue ball is a half a diamond segment away from the first A ball and about a half a balls width from the long rail. I use top left English and fractionally aim at a half of a ball on the A balls right side. Use a moderate stroke. Good luck with this one.

Two Draw Drills By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

San Francisco Billiard Academy Draw seems to be the hardest stroke for beginners to learn. A major problem is that it requires you to hit the ball well off center, and lack of chalk or an inaccurate hit can lead to miscues, embarrassment and rejection by your peers, not to mention loss of your lunch money. I’ve seen players tighten into knots whenever they had to pull the rock back. A second problem is that Bob Jewett most draw shots need to be struck harder than for other strokes. That’s because the backspin wears off as the ball travels across the cloth, so to get it to arrive with plenty, you have to start it with more than plenty and that takes power. Also, the cue ball slows down quickly as the draw wears off. It’s important to know that you have to do only two things to get a lot of backspin on the cue ball: hit it hard and hit it low. There are fundamentals that will help this happen more easily, like a straight stroke and a firm bridge. Did I mention that you need to chalk well? There are some who will say that to draw you have to snap your wrist, or jerk the cue back after contact, or lock your wrist, or exaggerate the follow-through, or have a very loose grip, or a tight one, or any number of other bogosities. When you’re listening to such hogwash, it’s best to smile politely and say, “Oh, I’ll have to try that.”

Email Questions to:

Hit the ball low and hard and the backspin will be there. One important concept when spinning the cue ball is the “quality” of the spin. This refers to how much spin you get on the cue ball for the amount of speed it has. It’s easy for anyone to get a little draw with a high-speed hit, but much tougher to get a bunch with a fairly soft hit. Diagram 1 shows a drill to work on this aspect. You are not trying to pocket any ball on this shot. Place the object ball about on the line and the cue ball about a foot from it towards the rail. The goal is to shoot the object ball straight up the table and draw the cue ball back to the head cushion without the object ball also hitting the head cushion. You will need “high quality” draw for this shot. If you can’t do it at first with the object ball that far from the cushion, move it closer so the cue ball doesn’t have as far to travel. Also, you can make it easier by having the cue ball closer to the object ball, but you risk cramping your follow through and learning bad habits. (It’s important to be able to stop the cue stick quickly for very close draw shots, but that’s not the point of this drill.) Keep your stick as level as possible — that’s one of the fundamentals that will help. Once you have the hang of the shot at a distance that’s comfortable for you, try moving the object ball progressively further from the cushion, and see how far out you can get it before the shot’s impossible. You could do this as a challenge shot with a friend. (Draw Drills continued on page 23)

BCA Pro 9-Ball Corr and Robles Crowned the Winners

LAS VEGAS, NV - May 16-22, 2004 The Pro 9-Ball event held during the BCA Nationals is complete and Karen Corr and Tony Robles have taken the titles this year. This is Karen’s third straight win in a row at the BCA Pro 9-Ball Event. In the finals she faced Allison Fisher. After Karen won the lag the match went back and forth. At 5-4 Karen pulled away and won the last two games and the match 7-4. Allison and Karen are ranked number 1 and 2 on the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) Tour so their matchup was no Karen Corr surprise. Karen was sent to the loser’s bracket by fellow countryman Julie Kelly and came back to face her to determine 3rd place. Allison went undefeated until the final match against Karen. 1st $15,000 Karen Corr 2nd $7,500 Allison Fisher 3rd $4,800 Julie Kelly 4th $3,700 Hsin Huang 5th $3,000 Monica Webb, Vivian Villarreal 7th $2,300 Jeanette Lee, Gerda Hofstatter 9th $1,700 Helena Thornfeldt, Ramona Biddle Ga Young Kim, Shin-Mei Liu The men’s side of the Pro 9-Ball event saw Tony Robles coming out on top after defeating Santos Sambajon. The final match was a trial by fire for Santos with Tony jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Santos made key OTB errors all through the match which lead to his eventual downfall. Tony was on the hill at 6-2 for the last rack. The game went back and forth a couple of times and finally came down to the 8-ball. Tony Photo courtesy of Pool Pics by Hoppe missed the 8, Santos Tony Robles missed the 8 and scratched, and with ball in hand Tony pocketed the 8 and had perfect position on the 9. This was enough for Santos as he threw in the towel and conceeded the match. 1st $15,000 Tony Robles 2nd $7,500 Santos Sambajon, Jr 3rd $4,800 Alex Pagulayan 4th $3,700 Francisco Bustamante 5th $3,000 Rodolfo Luat, Rodney Morris 7th $2,300 George Breedlove, Mika Immonen 9th $1,700 Danny Harriman, Luc Salvas, OTB Frankie Hernandez, Efren Reyes

Gold Spike Tour Kicks Off at Hollywood Park INGLEWOOD, CA The weekend of April 23rd at Jay’s Billiards saw the commencement of the United States Pool Players Association’s Gold Spike Tour. Jay Helfert, well-known tournament promoter provided the perfect backdrop of Hollywood Park Casino and Hollywood Park Race Track for the 1st of 8 tournaments culminating in the Reno Open. The weekend kicked off Friday with a $ 1000 added mini-tournament that had 49 players appear at 2 pm in the afternoon to fight it out for the early prize money. Alas, Wayne Pullen, playing at a 100 average claimed the $600 1st place in time for dinner by 8pm that night. Yes, that is the same Wayne Pullen that won the June Pro-Am in Reno to claim a $6000 bonus plus $4000 1st place. Talk about consistency! The main event began on Saturday and saw 97 players shoot it out for $5000 in added prize money. Jose Garcia, known in the LA area as “Fach”, played at a 90 average and came from the loser side to defeat Dave Hemmah, average 144, twice to claim the $2000 1st Place. Hemmah took time off from rampaging the Pechauer Tour to spend some time with the boys from the USPPA, and it was time well spent as his weekend efforts garnered him $1000 for second place in the main event, as well as a strong 4th place finish in the single elimination mini-tournament, adding another $225 to his kick The USPPA continued its effort to improve the world’s most accurate handicapping system. Over 48 % of recorded matches finished hill / hill or 6-4. This remains consistent with the results of the last 3 Reno Tournaments.

Once again, Tournament Director Ron Wishnack and his able accomplice Masami Foltz made sure every thing went smoothly and on time. Plans are being made now for the next scheduled event at Jay’s on July 9th. Jay’s Billiards, The USPPA, and Hollywood Park... the Perfect Pool Trifecta! th 4 Annual 8-Ball Challenge Breaking News Press Releases From: Leagues, Manufacturers, Suppliers, Organizations, Instructional and anything of interest in the pool and billiards community.

Western Canadian Open The Western Canadian Open hosted by Great White Billiards in Calgary, Alberta, Canada will be held this year on June 16-20, 2004. There has been some controversy about this year’s event and the following information has been posted on the UPA website. “Western Canadian Open Cancelled - UPA Press Release - 5/13/2004 “Unfortunately the Great Western Open is no longer a UPA sanctioned event. Tournament Director Paul Hansen is unable to meet his financial promises to the UPA. We regret that he did not inform the UPA of this before issuing a press release; however, we are pleased that he has agreed to refund the entry fees of any players who have already paid.” - Frank Alvarez III, UPA Lead Representative For any other information please contact the UPA.” Following this posting Paul Hanson responded: “This statement that ‘Paul Hanson’ is unable to meet his financial promises to the UPA, is misleading in that it misses the point. Great White Billiards decided to disassociate the Western Canadian Open 9-Ball Championships due to the extremely low registration from the UPA membership. At the time of the decision to back off of the UPA Sanctioning, GWB had 8 members signed up and paid, including at least two who would have been signed up without the sanctioning. It was not an issue of being ‘unable to meet...promises’ but rather an issue of recognizing the reality that at the time none of the marquis players would commit to participating for various reasons. There was even an instance of a marquis player requesting guaranteed appearance funding to attend. This failure to gain commitments from the top players in turn caused a domino affect in the sponsorship program, resulting in GWB deciding that rather than burning bridges with valid potential sponsors (ie: telling them untruths to gain their funding), the company would back off for this year and regroup for next year. This decision included reducing the tournament added monies, which had been upped to $20USD ($28K Cdn) directly at the requirement of the UPA. GWB decided that the additional obligation of the 18K was not warranted as the entries from that organization did not come in. It was never our intent to discredit the UPA itself, as we believe that the organization is founded on positive values and it’s mission is valid. It seems apparent, however, that the membership of the UPA does not support the mission, as they did not enter this event. The event will go on as it did last year, independently.” If you have any question regarding this event you can contact Paul Hanson at Great White Billiards (403) 253-1830. OTB

On April 9-11, 2004, T J’s Lounge and 8-Ball In, in Great Falls, MT hosted T J’s 4th Annual 8-Ball Challenge. Despite Easter weekend, the 50 player field was very strong, with 40 players in the Open Division and 10 Ladies. Players came from Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, British Columbia, Alberta and Montana. Edwin Montal (Calgary) came away with the tournament victory from the bottom side of the bracket defeating Jason Tigart (Great Falls) twice (7-0, 72). Jason had a good run to the hill defeating Jeremy Smith (Calgary), Rob Metzinger (Calgary) and Edwin for the hill. In the bottom half of the bracket Edwin Montal Edwin went against Stan Tourangeau (Vancouver), Shannon Gibson (Great Falls), and Rob Metzinger to get back to Jason. Rob had an excellent tournament as he worked his way through the bracket defeating Garth Lenci (Great Falls), Pete Sky (Calgary) and Stan, before ending his run to Jason and Edwin. Shannon Gibson, after losing his first match to Jeremy Smith, had a tough run to 4th place defeating six players in a row, including Bob Flores (Sheridan) and T R Olson (Chinook). The Ladies had 10 very competitive players. Phyllis Fernandez (Post Falls) met Cathy Metzinger (Calgary) and Sky Tigart (Great Falls) met Michelle Phoenix (Great Falls) to move on to the hill match. Phyllis and Sky played for the hill with Sky coming away with the win. On the bottom half Cathy defeated Michelle to get to a rematch with Phyllis. Phyllis moved on to try to knock Sky off the hill, but it wasn’t to be as Sky won the Ladies Division. Sky Tigart I would like to thank all the players who traveled great distances to be here. Also I would like to extend thanks to all our sponsors, without them, these events aren’t possible. Please remember to support them wherever you go. From The Work Bench by: Pat Sheehan See Ad Page 13 For the past six months I have been using Granito almost exclusively. I was not unfamiliar with the Gorina Fabrics or the idea of using worsted wool on pool tables. In the early 80’s Brunswick was looking for a substitute for their Brunses #1 cloth that had been made by A. D. Ellis Mills. The fine woven fabric was no longer available, so J. P. Stevens came up with the idea of a worsted fabric to give the speed needed for Three Pat Sheehan Cushion Billiards, however there was a flood that ruined the plant in Virginia that was producing pool tables and bowling equipment. Brunswick went out of the billiard business for several years until they could find subcontractors to produce equipment. Stevens was stuck with bolts of this highly specialized fabric. I bought bolt after bolt of it because it was great on pool tables, for it changed the game from a struggling match to a game of skill and finesse. Soon the cloth was gone. In covering Three Cushion tables I came across Granito Type A made in Spain and great for Three Cushion and also for pool tables. Those people who had it on their pool tables were very pleased. Simonis in Belgium copied the cloth. It was not accepted as a substitute for Three Cushion play but adding a little bulk and a lot of PR, it became THE cloth used in the pool championships and therefore with all pool players. Gorina remains the choice of the Three Cushion players and the European market. In 1983, I had a feeling that pool would make a strong resurgence so I contacted Brot Bishop, the president of Pendleton Woolen Mills to see if he could have one of the many woolen mills they owned duplicate the

Granito fabric. I laid out a national ad campaign and had great dreams of capturing the pool and billiard market. Brot had run several bolts on a trial basis. My dreams turned into tables (see May issue). Now Taholah is completely out of the way to anywhere except we had to do a 4 x 8 table for Brent and Gloria Lundburg in Ocean Shores about 20 miles from Taholah. When I saw the table my heart stopped. It was the Chinese version of the Brunswick Orleans and is a bunch of boards. Brent had really taken it apart to the last screw. The cushions were toast. It takes me forever to put on new cushions because I will not use contact cement but a special type of white glue. It really holds the rubber on but takes three hours to dry. Gloria fixed dinner and we finished about midnight. Table played great so the work was worth it. We had used the Maroon Basalt Granito and it looked great too. On the way to Ocean Shores we set up a 3 ½ x 7 for Jule White in Winlock, WA. It was a Golden West table built in the 1970’s , so it needed cushions also. We covered it with Granito in a Camel tone. Everyone got a can of Quick-Clean to keep the tables looking new for years. On the road again to the Lion’s Lair to look at Tom and Sue Lion’s 5 x 10 Alexandrian Pool Table in Enumclaw, WA. The table was beautiful and in good physical condition but the person who converted it from carom to pool had goofed on many of the points that separate good playing equipment from an aggravating situation every time you pick up a cue. Balls that hop out of the pockets; rails you can’t run a ball down; cushions that jump in one spot on the rail and thud in the next spot. Since Tom likes to play one pocket and it is a 5 x 10 we will be using Type M Granito Cloth. All we need is a couple more jobs in the Seattle area so we can bring the new (old) rails back to Enumclaw. Off to Kent to pick up a 4 x 8 All Teck I sold to Gordy Winterrowd’s father in 1969, to bring back to Portland. Sometimes you wonder if your ads and work in the newspaper pay off. Well, now I know that my money spent in “The Break” pays off. If you live anywhere in the Seattle-Tacoma Area and have a table that needs special attention, please give us a call for a quote 503-313-8646. Our rates are very favorable if we can tie a few jobs together when I need to bring the table back to the Lion’s Lair in Enumclaw. OTB

13th Semi-Annual USPPA Reno Warm-up Gold Spike Tour Pulls into Mountain View nd

rd

The weekend of May 22 & 23 saw the Gold Spike arrive at Chet Itow’s beautiful California Billiard Club. Considered one of the premier player’s rooms in the United States, California Billiard Club was the perfect host for the fifth leg of the event. 74 players battled out for $5440 in prize money. The field included the likes of Mike Massey, Ian Costello, Rafael Martinez and George Micheals as well as managing partner of the USPPA, Tony Annigoni. While the high handicaps reasserted themselves in this event, there were plenty of surprises. Nick Collado, (80 avg) had to carry the family banner with his girls buried in school work and did so well. The best performer of the over 150 handicap range by far was Ian Costello (160 avg.) Ian played great all day, only to fall to eventual winner Jason Williams (played at 130) 8 to 3 and demolished by Nick Collado 8 to 1. Costello as usual was the perfect gentleman while describing his preference for poker over pool these days. “ No matter how good you play the wheels can come off at any time”. Don’t be surprised to see this kid win a major Pool as well as Poker tournament in the same year. In the meantime, Jason Williams continues to dominate a lot of these fields. His average in the system runs a suspect 113 and to his credit Jason had no complaints about being bumped for this regional. Despite being raised to a lofty 130, he still managed to grab his piece of the Spike. In the meantime, what a treat to have Mike Massey be a member of the USPPA. Mike is the ultimate goodwill ambassador for pool. If you want to ask a question about what is going on in billiards anywhere in the world you simply have to ask Mike and he has all the details. A real tribute to Mike’s ability is that he can be on the road with trick shots all year and still manage a high finish in a handicap event on super tough equipment. Mike played at a 150 average for this event. Despite playing flawlessly all day, Tommy Lipps could not stave of a hot Jason Williams in the true double elimination format. Lipps playing at 100 seemed to play better all day, but a long wait for the finals, while Jason Williams was mowing down people on the loser’s side was a bad formula for Lipps. But Tommy took it in stride considering he works two jobs as well as competes at this level. The Gold spike moves up the road to Sacramento and the famous Hard Times Summer Jamboree. See You in Sacramento.

New Canadian Association from: American Cuesports Alliance

The Canadians are already working on forming their own non-profit association (Canadian Cue Sports – CCS), to be in place June 1, 2004 for the upcoming league year. The Canadian Association will be autonomous and as such will directly sanction leagues, collect fees and manage the National Championship program within Canada. The Canadian Association will be entirely responsible for it’s own administration and member items. In early June, the web site www.cdnqsport.com will be turned over to the new Association to keep you posted on every thing that’s happening. DUAL-SANCTIONING POLICY From: American Cuesports Alliance

The American CueSports Alliance Board met on April 21, 2004, and determined to adopt the same policy as established by the non-profit BCA national league system. “A league sanctioned with another national league association may sanction with the ACS (dual sanctioning) as long as its intention is not to undermine the ACS national league-sanctioning body. In order to ensure that, the applicant for dual-sanctioning must offer a separate ACS-sanctioned league or division to its players. Leagues may request a written “dual-sanction” application; and the application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the ACS staff. A league must have a signed approval agreement allowing “dual-sanctioning” before it sends in its initial sanctioning work and fees. The ACS administration will only approve dual sanctioning of a local league if it deems the dual sanctioning is offered solely for the purpose of offering its players extra benefits and not for the purpose of undermining an existing ACS-sanctioned league within its area of administration. Leagues sanctioned with ACS on the one night of the week may not be sanctioned with another national organization on the same night of the week unless grand fathered as previously dual-sanctioned.” OTB

BCA “DUAL SANCTIONING” from: Mark Griffin

The BCA Pool League & Programs policy is as follows: A league sanctioned with another recognized national league system other than the BCA may sanction with the BCA (dual sanctioning) as long as its intention is not to undermine the BCA national league system. In order to insure that, the applicant for dual sanctioning may be required to offer a separate BCA sanctioned league or division. Leagues with existing dual sanctioning may continue sanctioning annually with no restrictions on a consecutive year basis only. The BCA League and Program department will continue to reserve the right to accept dual sanctioning from any league it feels is sanctioning with the BCA for the express purpose of offering its players extra benefits, and not for the purpose of undermining an existing BCA league within its area of administration. OTB

Minnesota ACS From: American Cuesports Alliance

The ballots are in, and the winners are…the players and the continuation of their traditional nonprofit league-sanctioning structure! In actions that may set the precedent for the direction of other BCA State Associations over the next few months, the membership board of the Minnesota BCA Pocket Billiard Association convened in Minneapolis, Minnesota, today and voted by a large margin to switch its affiliation to the new national nonprofit organization – American

CueSports Alliance. The Association will switch its name to Minnesota ACS Pocket Billiard Association on June 1. The Minnesota ACS will continue to produce statewide singles and team championships for those leagues within Minnesota that sanction with the ACS in the 2004/ 2005 league year, beginning June 1, 2004 – the official start-up date of the ACS national offices in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

McDermott Tour Stop April 24th-25th Centralia, WA by: Pat Sheehan

It’s been awhile since I attended my last major tournament. We had a lot of them in “Chalk and Roll”, when it was rolling, but since it closed I have had my nose to the grindstone, my shoulder to the wheel and my chin up. It is very hard to work in that position, so it was a treat to take the day off and head to Mike McMenamin’s Oly Club in Centralia for the McDermott tour stop. I got there at 9:00AM and the practice games were underway. It was great to see all my old buddies like Ivan Doty, Mike Zimmerman, Cocomo and Dan Louie. Got to meet those who I only have seen in “The Break”. Paul Potier, John Horsfall, Stan Tourangeau and Earl Ralston. I was the rooting section for my traveling mate Aaron Curti. The tourney started at 11:00AM and Aaron started his first “A” tournament by winning his first 5 games but Marlon Oliveros took 1st Simon Pickering the next seven and out. Aaron went into the loser’s bracket, but so did Dan Louie, Ivan Doty, Paul Potier and Mike Zimmerman. Aaron drew Paul Potier for his next match. It’s a little tough to run into a World Champion trying to make his way through the loser’s bracket, but he did win a game, so I was proud of Aaron for he did get a game on a World’s Champ. After Aaron fell 6-7 to Paul, I went over to watch Dan Louie play Mike Dyer, a local boy. Dan is always great to watch unless you are in the chair with your cue in your hand. Dan has that high flying break where both feet are in the air. I tried to get a picture of it but he went so high that the camera cut off his head. Finally in the sixth game Mike got ball in hand and ran from the 7 and out. Louie finished the match with the next two games. Mike Dyer got a great lesson from the 1977 World’s Champ. Simon Pickering came to the tournament with Paul Potier and went right through the field without a loss to pick up the $900 first place and Paul took third for $500. Raul Abenojar got $700 for second place. Fourth place went to John Horsfall, fifth was shared by Bryce Avila and Kris Iverson $200. Stan Tourangeau and Michael Dooley each got $100 for seventh, Dan Louie, Gary Givens, Marlon Oliveros and Mike Zimmerman left with $50 for ninth place. Paul Potier and Dan Louie made a wager that someone would run 7 racks, so I put up $250 for the person who could do it. No one could put the seven consecutive racks together so we added it to the pot. Sarge Aylesworth put on a great exhibition of fancy and trick shots. Todd Chaput and Jessica Brown from the Oly Club did a great job of putting on the first ever tournament in Centralia and Todd is sure next year’s Classic will be bigger and better. Todd is planning on an 8-Ball Match in October. Hope to see you there. 1st $900 Simon Pickering nd 2 $700 Raul Abenojar 3 rd $500 Paul Potier 4 th $300 John Horsfall 5 th $200 Bryce Avila, Kris Iverson th 7 $100 Stan Tourangeau, Michael Dooley 9 th $50 Dan Louie, Gary Givens, OTB Marlon Oliveros, Mike Zimmerman

Quick -Clean HELPFUL HINTS from: David Hodges WHITE MARKS ON CLOTH: Pool table cloth is a wool nylon blend. When the cloth is dyed the wool accepts the dye 100%. The dye can’t penetrate the nylon so the dye is just sitting on the outside of the nylon. The friction between the cue ball and the cloth can reach over 300 degrees. This temperature friction causes the dye to be taken off the nylon leaving a white mark. Quick-Clean will help with these marks. If I come to a table that has a lot of marks I will dampen a towel with Quick-Clean and clean these spots before I clean the whole table. I can almost always get these marks off the table, but there will always be new marks, just re-clean.

Gold Spike Tour Rolls Into Eureka May 1-2, 2004 Raggs’ Rack Room in Eureka California was the host for the second stop in the Gold Spike Tour. Despite confusion in the schedule a very strong albeit small field showed up for the $4000 added in prize money. This event was an open with bonus points being allotted to qualified USPPA members as well as a shot at a piece of the Gold Spike itself for all players as part of the tour Raggs’, long a favorite tournament venue, even hosting numerous straight pool events over the years, is a cozy little 13 table room inside a great deco building. The operator Darrell, whose nickname is actually Raggs, is a major supporter of big table nine ball and the USPPA is happy to have his room as a participant. The USPPA player-base provided it’s own version of the triple crown with 1st, 2nd, & 3rd going to three of it’s biggest guns, Amar Kang, Billy Palmer, and Tony Chohan respectively. The Hot Seat match had all the drama anyone could ask for out of a tough 33 player field. Amar Kang vs. Tony Chohan, two well known action players, actual cousins as well as road partners, and the match – Hill/Hill Naturally – Kang snaps the nine on the break – just another routine match on the Gold Spike Tour. The final was not bad either. The big news in this match was that somebody actually beat Billy Palmer. The score – Kang 9 / Palmer 8! See You in Willow Creek. The Falls “B” 9-Ball by: Nita Saddler POST FALLS, ID On May 8th, we held a class “B” 9-Ball tournament. With an unexpected small number of players the tournament went very quickly and ran smoothly with no problems. Since we only had 16 players, I did not promote our winner Larry Wayne to an “A” player because the field was so equally competitive. Our second place winner Deacon Pike started out with a 7-5 win over Danny Glynn, but lost his next match to Peter Hamel 4-7. He then continued through the losers bracket defeating Harold Prine 7-3, Mike Kurtz 7-5, Scott Schierman 7-5, Danny Glynn (forfeit) and Rich Benson 7-5 before getting defeated by Larry Wayne 2-7. Larry Wayne maintained his position in the winners bracket throughout the tournament, first by defeating Duke 7-3, Mike Kurtz 7-4, Peter Hamel 7-3, Rich Benson 7-2 and finally our second place finisher to take first place. Great job to all of you including our third place finisher Rich Benson, and our fourth place finisher Danny Glynn! Once again I want to thank the staff at The Falls and their owner John Carr for keeping our pool players happy. I will plan on scheduling more tournaments in the fall. 1st $350 Larry Wayne + $100 side pot nd 2 $200 Deacon Pike 3 rd $100 Rich Benson OTB 4 th $70 Danny Glynn

LAS VEGAS, NV - May 16-22, 2004 Hsin Huang had a very impressive 4th place showing at the BCA Pro 9-Ball event held during BCA Nationals in Las Vegas. Hsin won her first match against Ewa Laurance and went on to defeat Gina Kim-Lipsky, Helena Thornfeldt and Shin-Mei Liu. She then faced Allison Fisher who sent her to the loser’s bracket. From there Hsin defeated Monica Webb to face Karen Corr, who ended her run at 4th place. Hsin has made quite a name for herself on the Northwest Women’s Pool Association (NWPA) Tour by winning two of this year’s three events so far and winning a total of five of seven events in the 2003 season and taking first place in last year’s Amateur National Championship. Professionals Pool Their Talents for Maria’s Benefit Article and photos courtesy of: Linda Carter

BURIEN, WA Over the weekend of May 1 st and 2nd, local pool players got to get autographs, rub shoulders, and have their pictures taken with pool greats Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer, Buddy “The Rifleman” Hall, 3-time World Trick Shot Champion Mike Massey, Dan “The Man” Louie, and Rich “The

Molly shooting Mike Massey as her partents Venetia & Leo Hancock look on

Hat” Geiler. The real star of the show was Geiler’s niece, Maria Federici, a beautiful 24 year old who was driving home from work when an unsecured 2x6 from someone else’s vehicle crashed through her windshield and hit her in the face, causing massive facial and brain injuries. Quoting from her website, mariasmiracle.com, “Maria Federici graduated with honors last summer from the UW with her degree in Speech Communications and was planning on going back for her Masters. Maria is someone who is full of life and spirit; she has a great sense of humor, a real wit with a sense of irony. Maria is a beautiful young lady who is mature beyond her 24 years. She’s very bright & extremely independent and was on the Deans list in college while working two jobs to pay for her education.” Since Maria had no insurance, several benefits have been held to raise money for her surgeries, care and rehabilitation. It is a testament to the kindness of people across the nation who came together to donate time and resources to make this benefit a success. On Saturday, the show got started (l to r) Dan Louie, Shawn Kemp at 4pm, and featured World Champion pool players Johnny Archer from GA, (4-time World Champion and Player of the Decade), Buddy Hall from FL, (BCA Hall of Famer with over 70 pro titles), and our two local champions, Dan Louie (former World Champion) and Rich Geiler in a round robin tournament, playing sets of 6. The sets went: Dan Louie 1, Buddy Hall 5; Johnny Archer 5, Rich Geiler 1; (Maria’s Benefit continued on page 22)

Mike played 20 people in 9-ball, he amazed the crowd with his effortless shots, pool humor and stories of the past. Mike, a constant gentleman, played our two young sons, Dylan age 12 and Hayden age 9 who was the only person to be crowned the title of beating Mike that night, as Mike missed a 4 rail 9-ball bank shot leaving Hayden to all the glory, in which he did not hesitate a moment in sinking the 9-ball! “Thank you Mike for your charm and grace in making a young boys dreams come true”. Later in the evening Mike signed his book “World Of Trick Shots,” Cue balls and photographs, which are still available at Java Billiards. Mike posed for pictures while He also enjoyed playing a guitar provided by a friend Ian McMurren of a local Christian band, Out Of Mouth. Mike also “jammed” with another friend Jared Minota who played harmonica and Jason Crow

didyouknow didyouknow 1. Billiards evolved from a lawn game similar to croquet played sometime during the 15th century in Northern Europe (probably in France). 2. The term “poolroom” now means a place where billiards is played, but in the 19th century a poolroom was a betting parlor for horse racing. Billiard tables were installed so patrons could pass the time between races. The game of billiards and the poolroom became connected in the public’s mind. Today, the two terms are used interchangeably. 3. Pool is one of the safest sports in the world.

Gold Spike Tour Caroms into Willow Creek May 8-9, 2004 The Gold Spike Tour banked it’s way down to little Willow Creek, California to P & J Billiard, a pristine 4 table room in this little Humboldt County hamlet. The host Pete Tonkin, better known for Pete Tonkin Custom Cues, provided a great playing environment. Local sponsors, the Lucky Bear Casino and Re –Max agent Sean Mcatasney, provided the added money. The tournament was an open format producing a 22 player field despite scheduling over Mother’s Day Weekend. Many players had to take a phone break on Sunday to pay their respects to Mom while keeping one eye on the tournament chart. With a staggered entry fee to accommodate USPPA players with handicaps under 65, the tournament saw some surprising results. Tony Chohan, aka T- Rex, fell to Dan Bonimini on the winners side 9-7. A most notable match was between Tournament Director Gilbert Arellano and Amar Kang. Despite his director duties, Arellano rated a 110 in the USPPA, played strong all weekend. His match with Kang saw him take a 7 to 3 lead only to watch the ever-steady Amar climb back in to win 9 to 7. After losing a tough 9 to 5 match to Chris MacDonald, Tony Annigoni faced local player Nelson Iriarte. Iriarte, a strong 100 in the USPPA, played well to overcome a 6 to 4 deficit and send Annigoni packing, In the meantime, local favorite Dan Bonimini continued to dispatch the visitors defeating Arellano 7 to 4 and then fellow local Nelson Iriarte 7 to 3. Not bad for a guy who played 18 holes of golf before coming to Sunday’s match !!!!!!!!! In the Hot Seat match, veteran pro player Chris MacDonald took the Hot Seat with a grind out 9 to 7 win over favorite Amar Kang. Amar regrouped and ended Bonimini’s run 7 to 1 to earn a rematch with MacDonald. The final matches were never in question as Amar Kang demonstrated the consistency that has earned him titles in the last two Gold Spike events, defeating MacDonald 9 to 4 and 7 to 3. Noteworthy was the finish of local USPPA member Roger Pementel (52 handicap) who as the highest finishing player under a 65 handicap claimed a $250 dollar bonus. The hospitality of small towns is legendary, but Willow Creek and Pete Tonkin take a back seat to no one. The playing conditions were exemplary, and despite 4 tables the tournament aided by the small field, was timely and well run by Reno Open veteran Gilbert Arellano. In addition to running a great regional tournament stop, Pete Tonkin is a sponsor for the USPPA Pro – Am, providing the winner a custom made $3000 cue, made to the winners specification. Last but not least, let’s not forget the friendly staff at P & J and especially Pete’s wife Joanna, who coordinated a terrific barbecue for the players on Saturday resulting in this author for one, commencing a diet upon his return home. Results 1. $1250 Amar Kang 4. $ 150 Nelson Iriarte 2. $ 600 Chris MacDonald 5. $ 75 Tony Annigoni 3. $ 300 Dave Bonimini 6. $ 75 Gilbert Arellano

4. The dome on Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home, conceals a billiard room. In Jefferson’s day, billiards was illegal in Virginia. 5. The term “scratch”, as applied to a pocketing of the cue ball, was derived from the penalty assessed for such a foul. In pool’s early days, the score was often kept on a chalkboard. When a player pocketed the cue ball, his opponent “scratched” a point off the shooter’s score. 6. Billiard champions have the highest average age of any sport, 35.6 years. 7. Tom Cruise did his own trick billiard shots for the 1986 film, The Color of Money, except for one in which he had to jump two balls to sink another. Director Martin Scorsese said he wanted to let Cruise learn the shot, but it would have taken two extra days of practice, which would have held up production and cost thousands of dollars. The shot was instead performed by professional billiards player Mike Sigel. 8. Billiards was the first sport to have a world championship (1873).

Rich 2, Buddy 5; Johnny 6, Dan 0; Rich 2, Dan 4; and Johnny 3, Buddy 3. Totals were Johnny 14, Buddy 13, and Dan and Rich tied with 5 apiece. All the players displayed fantastic shot-making and knowledge of the game. If you love pool, there was no finer place to be than the gymnasium at Kennedy High School in Burien. Then Mike Massey, who hails from TN, assisted by his wife, Francine and their dog, put on a spellbinding artistic shot show that got the crowd on their feet. Mike has such a repertoire of favorite shots that no one wanted it to end. He got fans from the audience to shoot some of them (including the one underneath the dog’s belly!) Back (l to r) Johnny Archer, Mike Massey, Buddy Hall, and the finger pool was Front (l tor ) Dan Louie, Rich Geiler outstanding, as usual, although Francine made it very challenging, requiring the ball to make a 90 degree turn with 4” clearance! On Sunday, it was more great pool action, but round 2 did not finish, as the format changed a little. Two matches were played and Rich got another game from the previous day’s score over Johnny, and so did Dan from Buddy, both finishing 2-4. A double elimination, race to 5 tournament was started, and with 5 pros, that left 3 open bye spots, which were put up to the crowd to bid on. The bye spots were against Johnny, Buddy and Mike Massey, and the high bidder got to choose which player they would be pitted against first round. Bidding was frenzied and the first player to win a coveted spot was Shawn McIntosh, paying $220. He elected to play Buddy Hall. Turns out he got the cheapest spot. The excited bidding continued for the next spot, and Tracy Orcutt won, paying even more, $250,to play Johnny Archer. The last spot to go was bid at a fever pitch and the winner was Leo Hancock, paying $300 to play against Mike Massey. Not too many ‘civilians’ can say they have battled on the green turf against one of these guys in tournament conditions. The surprising thing was that Leo gave up his spot to his 10yr.-old daughter, Molly. Molly was scared, but coached by Johnny Archer and Linda Carter, hit 2 great 9-ball combos to take a respectable 2 games. (My combo was harder, Johnny!) The player that won the most games against their pro won an autographed cue. The winner was Shawn, who shot an excellent set of 9-ball. During both the round robin and the double elimination tournament (which because of time constraints did not finish), someone out of the crowd would yell that they would donate $50 for a 9 on the break or a runout, and the player would match it. Johnny even donated his break cue and his jump cue, and had to go looking for one when he needed to jump! All of these players with the big strokes also have very big hearts, donating their time and talents, and visited with Maria on Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital

in Puyallup. Surprise guests on Sunday were basketball players Shawn Kemp and Steve Sheffler, who graciously accommodated fans with pictures and autographs. They are both great athletes, but they still needed remedial lessons on how to form a bridge! Mike Massey entertained the audience with another artistic shot show, displaying his formidable stroke and making that cueball dance. He performed the Impossible Escape shot and managed an impressive 7 out of 8 boot shots over the weekend, one of which was aimed at a cameraman! The boot shot is a jump shot off the table into an open boot on the floor about 4 feet away from the table. More amazing finger pool followed, and Rich Geiler performed his trademark 3-rail ‘kick’ shot, using his shoe. Given free reign, Rich is just hilarious. Poking jokes at his stutter, and everything he can think of, he kept the crowd rolling at his one liners, stealing the show several times from every player there. But it was all in good fun and after the extravaganza, it was estimated that over $22,000 had been raised over this very successful weekend for Maria. From the opening of the gymnasium doors to the wrap party at 13 Coins, the dedicated and tired core group and Maria’s family want to extend their thanks to everyone involved. Thank you so much to the players, the people who donated their time and services, and most especially to the fans who ponied up the admission price to share a wonderful magical weekend for a wonderful woman with an indomitable spirit. Besides the players who gave their time gratis, Rich and Linda Carter garnered donations from many people who made it happen and especially want to thank: Kennedy High School, Burien, WA (use of the gym over the weekend, plus volunteers to sell snacks), The Cue Ball in Salem, OR (a gorgeous Olhausen table that was autographed by all the players and Maria, to be auctioned later), Leo Hancock Billiards Service (felt and labor, and chairs for the Buddy Hall players), Party Rentals, 13 Coins (food for the players), Westgate Hotel (rooms for the players), Kinko’s (flyers), AAA Billiards in Woodinville, WA (balls and rack, chalk), Talking Rain (beverages), Costco (snacks), Beads and Billiards, Jessi Krauser (cues, billiard accessories, Sharpies!, and time at the benefit), Sunset Billiards, Sean Finney (Autographed cue and rack from the 2003 Glass City Open), Roger Pettit (custom made cue), Dunn Lumber, Burien Studios, Chuck (setup studio for photos with the pros), Ford (MC Extraordinaire), RunOut Sportswear, Allen Hopkins ($761 in (Maria’s Benefit continued on page 31)

Gold Spike Tour Goes South to Billiard Connection May 15-16, 2004 The Gold Spike Tour rumbled south to The Billiard Connection in Northridge, California for leg 4 in the series, a $2000 added USPPA handicap. Owner Mark Yamada and Tournament Director Ron Wishnack were the perfect hosts for this always competitive event. Tight-pocketed Gold Crowns compliments of Ernesto Dominguez and the USPPA handicap always make for some interesting results. The lower handicap players came to the forefront for this one. With 44 players battling it out for the $1000, 1st place and a piece of the Gold Spike. With over 40 per cent of the matches going hill/hill or 8-6 there was lots of excitement and everyone had a run for the money. The final round of 8 had the lower rated top four finishers eliminating the big guns, including Bryce Avila and perennial top finisher Wayne Pullen, Mr. Consistency himself The final match not only went hill/hill at 8 to 7, but 2nd place finisher Simon Fell had a shot at the last nine ball to boot but couldn’t come up with it. Simon, the manager at Bent Cue in Newberry Park, California, was gracious in defeat. Winner Nat Palma played great the whole event and was $1000 richer as a result. Arizona Women’s Billiards Tour 3rd Stop - April 17 and 18 2004 from: Dawn Anderson, Secretary AWBT

Sixshooters, located at 35th Avenue and Peoria, was the location for the AWBT’s 3rd stop. This WPBA qualifier had a field of 28 women who played their hearts out for 2 days in hopes of winning the tournament to earn not only the money at stake, but more importantly, the coveted seat in a pro tournament. From the beginning, a few people shined above the rest and the top 8 ladies emerged. The top 8 consisted of: Liz Bernreuter, Anne Gray, Natalie Hostler, Susan Mello, Mary Moench, Toni Tucker, Susan Wilbur and Martha Zanetis. Toni’s 1st place prize was a $308 pay out and a paid seat in the WPBA Cuetec Cues Midwest Classic, which will be held at the Par-A-Dice Casino in Peoria Illinois June 9th through 13th, 2004. You can follow her progress at the tournament from your own home by checking out www.AZBilliards.com and www.WPBA.com. Congratulations Toni and good luck! We’ll be routing for you! A big thank you goes out to Tony and Daryl at Sixshooters for making both days enjoyable! Diana really turned on the heat and ended up claiming the first place prize and going home with $57. Susan ended up in 2nd place and took home $32. Congratulations ladies! We have a winner! Our very first raffle has come to an end and we can positively declare it a huge success! The prize was a J. Pechauer Custom Cue, valued at $750. There were a total of 747 tickets sold which, at a buck a ticket, raised the AWBT $747 dollars! The winner was……. Tracy Webb of Buckeye Arizona … And to think she felt bad because all she could afford at the time was one ticket! Like we said all along, it only takes one to win! OTB

Draw Drills

(continued from page 8)

In Diagram 2 is a similar drill, but it allows you to shoot quite a bit harder. In fact, you’ll have to shoot harder but still have high-quality draw. Again, you shoot the object ball not to a pocket, but straight up the table. This time the goal is to get the cue ball back to the cushion before the object ball gets to that same cushion, in a sort of race. Start with the balls in about the position shown, with the object not quite out to the side pockets. Try faster and slower shots to see which works best for you. When you have that distance mastered, start moving the balls up the table, and see how close you can get them to the far cushion before the object ball always wins the race. Have you remembered to chalk well before each shot? If you play in several locations, try the drills in each one. Cloth, cushions, and balls all affect how well the draw works. If you would like to see the effect of new cloth when the tables where you play haven’t seen such luxury since the last millennium, rub the cue ball with wax or silicone spray. Good luck with developing a draw stroke that will make people say, “Wow.” If you chalk well, the learning will go faster. OTB

The Sacramento, CA Hard Times Billiards First of the Month Jamboree had to compete with some of the best spring time weather Sacramento has seen in a very long time. Temperatures in the mid to low 70s kept players outside most of the weekend and the attendance reflected the weather. The low turnout in the One Pocket event was due mainly to the g o r g e o u s weather. Only 16 players paid the $20 entry fee. The (l to r) Paul Juarez, Joey Gebron total prize money was only $480. Local players Joey Gebron and Pat McLeod battled in the finals. Joey had to win twice against Pat and won the first match 2-1 and then the second match 2-0, collecting the 1st place prize of $210. The First of the month 9 Ball Jamboree also felt the effects of the great spring type weather. Only 39 players paid the $25 entry fee for the $500 added event. Strong play by Paul Juarez proved what it took to take 1st place and the $380 prize. Mr. Juarez went through the tough, but small field undefeated to take the ‘hot seat’. Paul defeated Alex Kopel (6-1), Jack Cooney (6-5), Ken P. (6-1), Jim Fabionar, 6-3 and in the finals of the winners bracket, Mr. Juarez defeated Art Valencia (6-3) Joey Gebron was sentenced to the One Loss side early in the tournament. But Joey went on to defeat Tinsley Johnson, Tom Davis, Rommell Roque, David McNown, Jim Fabionar, Robert Aldana, and then Art Valencia, to reach the finals against Mr. Juarez. The finals were true double elimination. Mr. Juarez had to be beaten twice. Joey Gebron came out strong in the first set to win the hill match. The second set was a battle of safeties. Joey was winning these battles for the most part, but Paul was keeping up his own end. The final game found Joey with ball in hand on the 7 ball about a two feet from the corner pocket. The cue ball had to go down table for position on the 8 ball that was close to the 9. Joey must have been thinking too much on that 8 ball, because he missed the 7. Paul Juarez won the last game easily. WPBA Mints and Gum Ragold Confections signs agreement with the WPBA Tour Charlotte, NC - The Women’s Professional Billiard Association announced that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Ragold Confections to manufacture and mass market a line of WPBA branded collector tins containing billiard ball shaped mints and gums. Founded in 1976, Ragold Confections is a privately held company based in Chicago, IL. Ragold Confections is mostly known for Velamints, which was sold in 2001 to Amourol, a division of Wrigley, and Juicefuls. WPBA branded mints and gums are expected to be sold at selected mass - and specialty- retailers, billiards retailers, billiard rooms, WPBA tournaments and on the WPBA’s online Pro Shop at www.wpba.com. ”We are excited to partner with the WPBA,” says Rainer Schindler, President of Ragold Confections. Having had success in the golf industry with PGA Tour mints and in the business community with Dilbert, we believe working with the WPBA will bring even greater success to both parties.” ”Since the billiard industry has had little interaction with the confections sector, we feel that we will be able to reach an audience which will be excited to have their billiard branded refreshment as these tins will contain strong peppermints and peppermint gum,” adds Schindler. ”These unique and collectable tins should prove to be very popular to billiards fans,” says Kathy Kopacz, Director of Retail Licensing for the WPBA Tour. “Given the popularity of the WPBA Tour, and the fact that billiards is the 5th most popular participation sport in America, and you have a powerful formula to generate significant sales, added Kopacz. Ragold Confections joins a growing list of licensees who have recently contracted with the WPBA. Last month PG&A released a full line of travel gear and business accessories, New Deal Playing Card Company has introduced its “ergonomically-correct” decks of playing cards and Benator Publishing, LLC will soon be releasing wall calendars featuring the WPBA and its top professionals. A number of additional products are being planned for the upcoming year according to Kopacz. The WPBA is the oldest professional player’s organization for billiards. The WPBA governs all aspects of female professional activity; represents the media and participation rights of professional and semi-pro players; governs rules, regulations, and conduct, ethics and equipment specifications for professional sanctioned tournaments; and, develops, produces and sanctions tournaments. (continued from page 4)

D”C”A: So it’s probably more sowhether instead of being the BCA League play on any tables – Diamond League play on any tables. MG: I don’t think I’d ever go that far. But again I’m going to say something like I did with Nike. Diamond has nothing to do with the BCA league other than common ownership through me. But I have nothing to do with the day-to-day operation of Diamond. So I don’t think that’ll ever happen but you never know. I guess in theory Brunswick is gonna write me a check for a gazillion dollars, so if they write me a check, there’s requirements on that. I will not make any money off of the league so if somebody was to write a check for $3 million that goes against the prize fund to better the sport. When I say prize fund, I probably should word that better, as player benefits. There are other issues besides just added cash to make things better. I don’t for see that ever happening. D”C”A: Now the ACS seems to have the support of the larger league systems, the operators, how is that going to effect your leagues, the BCA leagues, and possibly did you buy an empty league? MG: Nobody buys a league. I admit that. There are memberships but the membership is only from June 1st to May 31st. Every league, every league operator, every anything with this league ceases to exist on May 31st. That’s the way its been for years. The ACS has misrepresented what the state officials are saying. If you go to the ACS website and see state officials and officers, get the list from the BCA people. I just think that’s wrong. I think they are showing their moral fiber here and ethical background. They may think that people are stupid in the short run, they probably are, but in the long run their integrity has been damaged. Once you’ve damaged your integrity, it is very, very difficult to regain it. Now these state officials, the only reason they became state officials is that they had to promise them something to become a director. But when these gentlemen are speaking, they are only speaking for themselves. If you read their press releases and everything else it alludes to that they represent the players in their respective state – well, they don’t. They only represent themselves and possibly their own league if they are a league operator. I cannot understand how these gentlemen and ladies don’t feel that they are in a conflict by wearing a BCA hat and telling everyone to join the ACS. I don’t care if they join ACS. They have the right to do that. The ACS has the right to form its own state association, but I don’t think it has the right to hijack the existing BCA organization. I think they are forgetting common business deals and that shows because some of these people haven’t been in business before. John Lewis have never really been in business, he’s been working for nonprofits all his life, for the last 15-20 years. How will that effect things and the outcome? I don’t know. I don’t think they know. I plan on being here, when its all over and done with. They may too, so we may have two leagues. I’ve relaxed the definition that John Lewis has on Dual Sanctioning and that type of thing. That just changed a few years ago, so I’m encouraging people to play in all leagues and play in mine also where the ACS is putting restrictions as to whether they play on the BCA, which I think is improper. They keep saying they’re for the players and I think they’re trying to make the players choose. I don’t think that’s appropriate behavior. The players know where they want to play. D”C”A: You announced the BCA 9-Ball Championships that’s going to be held in November. Now the ACS has announced their National 9-Ball tournament the week earlier in Reno. Do you have any comment about that? MG: Obviously they have the right to schedule a

tournament anytime they want to. I think if they really had the players best interest in mind they would be sensitive to the players cash requirements, for lack of a better term, for how many tournaments they can go to. It’s quite obvious what they’re attempting to do and I just think it shows again a weak ethical and moral decision making process. They have the right to do that if they care to. D”C”A: Does the split of the league system BCA, put other leagues in a superior position for picking up prospects from disillusioned league players looking for a stable organization? MG: I have reached out and had several conversations with some of the leaders in ACS, some of the executive board members, we just can’t see eye-to-eye on certain things. I think it’s terrible for the league players. All it’s going to do is cut everything in half or something. But, I will rebuild it because I think I have the tools to do it. The fact that I’m part of the company that designed the tables connected to our own tournament and that keeps all the money paid out for table rental and things like that – keeps that intact and allows me to use those funds to promote pool. It’s not an expense anymore, it’s and income to help promote. I think I can do something that most people can’t and I have the time to do it. As far as this split possibly going to allow other leagues some of the BCA players and leagues, may spin off to other pool. It may also create more players, it’s a possibility with the turmoil and everything. I don’t really consider anybody out there competition. We should all be working together against the competition from video game, TV, bowling – all these other items. We’re supposed to work together to get 800,000 organized pool players not the 400,000 that the industry has. I can’t say that I’ve had any greater success convincing those people of my philosophy however. D”C”A: Some of the players have questions because they have doubt in you and I think a lot of that doubt comes because you were on the board and the perception that you allowed the league to be sold, and you bought it. That’s what I’ve heard from people. You allowed the leagues to be sold and then you bought them. MG: All I can say is, and maybe I can get the BCA (Billiard Congress of America) to make a release on it – they were very sensitive on any conflict. I excused myself from every meeting. They all agree. People know that I was most adamant about selling the league. I made a short impassioned speech that they were just nuts to do this and that they would lose probably the majority of their room members. Be that as it may, it was out of my hands. I wasn’t in the room, I was out of there and they voted (I don’t even know what the vote was), in favor of the sale. So then I have a decision to make. D”C”A: There’s been some talk for a player boycott of the companies that are now seated on the BCA board that approved the sale of the league. What effect would this have on our industry? MG: The BCA board was not capable of running the leagues properly by design or by intent, who knows why, it just didn’t work. Everybody’s under the impression that the leagues are such a great deal financially. These leagues don’t make any money. They never have made any money. The never have made any money over the years and everybody thinks this is such a money making proposition. When you only charge $10 a year, you’re not going to get very far. You have to pay all your overhead, rebates, goody bags, you’re probably down to $6 a person to function on. There is no money in the league program and everybody has misconstrued that. Gil’s Service Hosts Handicapped 14.1 Event

by: Tom Suarez

On Saturday, January 24, 2004 Gil’s Service in Elk Grove, CA held its first ever 14.1 tournament. Of the eight players, six were regulars, but it was out-of-towner Tony Annigoni who snapped the event off with a final victory over Robert Frame.

Mark Griffin Talks that can round up some sponsors hopefully, that can do some things more player oriented. I think that the players should look at this as a blessing in disguise. There’s a big wide world out there. Why would they want the BCA to keep it? D”C”A: I think it’s running on emotion. They feel that something is being taken away from them, something that they could count on, look forward to every fall. MG: But that will still be there and more things will be there. One of the first things we did was bring back the National 9-Ball which hasn’t happened since 2001 and all I hear about is, the BCA took away this tournament or took away that. D”C”A: I agree if you stop and sit down and think about those things and weigh them out then you understand. But most people are doing a knee-jerk reaction, something is being taken away. MG: I agree. D”C”A: Do you have anything you’d like to add? MG: Some people have been accusing me of being greedy and I’m going to steal all the money. First of all there is no money to be made, believe me. And that’s just not what I’m here for. I’m here to get pool off the dime and it’s going to cost me a lot of time and probably some money. I sympathize with everybody’s feelings but that’s no reason to go out – some of these people take it way too personally. I found that once

This was the first time the United States Pool Players Association (USPPA) had ever handicapped a 14.1 tournament. Players’ skill rankings were used to handicap the race to 125. If the players had the same skill level, they played even. The matches started right at 1 p.m., easy for a tournament of only 8 players. Annigoni and Brad Wanner played in the first round, with Wanner getting a 60-point spot in this race to 125. Both players started out missing easy balls – apparently both had opening match jitters. They had plenty of opportunities to have good runs, but bad rolls kept these two shooters in trouble. Wanner, a young 9-ball player interested in trying this new game, did eventually start running some balls and making the match interesting. Annigoni was not showing the strength of a seasoned pool player in the very early rounds and missed some very makable shots, leaving the table open for his opponent to take his opportunities.

The match between Nick Adams and Robert Tyler was a heads-up race to 125. Both players had a good time, and the match ended very close, 125 to 116. Tom Suarez played Annigoni in the second round. Annigoni broke, and Suarez made two balls and played a lock-up-safe – for most humans. Annigoni took the bridge, leaned over the table, and sliced the 1 ball into the corner pocket, busting the rack wide open. He didn’t stop shooting until he had run 68 balls. With the handicap system, Suarez was able to make it close, but Annigoni won 125 to 118. The final match saw Ron Frame match up with Annigoni. Frame finished in the runner-up spot and actually had a chance to beat Annigoni, but several factors worked in the older player’s favor. Despite an additional 15 points subtracted from his score because of a foul, Annigoni won the tournament by a score of 125 to 123.

(continued from page 28)

I got a chance to talk to somebody and explain some of the thing that occurred, they have a whole different outlook. Very few people know that Mr Lewis was terminated. They are painting this picture of this honorable giant that is going out doing these things. I like John but he should be more forthright, even their press releases have a lot of halftruths. They don’t quite tell the whole story. I think that’s improper. I think it’s demeaning and I think it’s treating the players with disrespect. Above all, the players run this show, anybody that thinks 10 or 15 operators run the show are mistaken, the players run the show. I expect it to be a little choppy for the next year or two. I have a lot of faith in what I’m doing and I know my reasons are right and I’m not carrying the baggage that some of the other individuals in this industry are. I just think I have a proven business head but also a pretty good moral bearing on this whole thing and I just wish that everybody’s ethics were a little higher. I know that everybody says this pool business is a dirty business, well it doesn’t have to be. And I’m really upset with the tactics that a few of these people have taken. I think it’s going to catch them in the end. I really do and they’ll have nobody to blame but themselves, but believe me they won’t blame themselves – they’ll blame everybody else. It’s unfortunate that some of these things occurred but I don’t view them

as a competitor. I view them as a compadre, or whatever you want to call it. We should be working together. They unfortunately don’t see it that way. Their goal is to destroy the BCA and everything it stood for and I think that’s the wrong attitude, the wrong direction. I think it’s unnecessary. I just don’t think it’s the proper way of doing business. There’s an old Polish saying, “If you’re out to bury somebody, you better dig two graves.” I’m really upset at some of the slams some of these people have thrown at me and they don’t even know me. I return every call I get. Now, I may not be too punctual when I get so many of them or I’m doing other things, but I return every call. I can’t believe how many people don’t return my calls. I’m talking about these state officials that take sides without even knowing the facts. I’ve gone out of my way many times to try to find them, to talk to them. It just shows that they either don’t want to know the truth or they’re afraid of the truth. A lot of these people I think were misled. After their first press release, I actually called all the people I could get in touch with on their director list. Two of them didn’t even know what I was talking about. I’m big on doing but I’m not really a talker. There should be common decency, after all we’re all in the same industry. If they don’t have any respect for phone calls how are we supposed to work together. I can’t

work with them if I can’t find them. The other thing I will say and it’s a question you didn’t ask that keeps coming up is: “What happens when you sell it to somebody else down the road, like the BCA did?” I’m not going to do it and I’m tired of paying attorney’s bills but if somebody is an attorney or knows an attorney, have them write up where it will be transferred to a trust on my demise. I’m not planning on selling it, but I am planning on dying. What you see is what you get. I’m not lying to anybody. I don’t see the ACS saying the same thing. They could do it, they could sell it too. There are a lot of misconceptions out there. Their board is only going to be a five member board. It starts with 15, the next year it goes down to 10, the next year it goes down to 5. That’s not a whole lot of player input. I can tell you who those 5 people are, it’s the same old click. It just seems that the people that have the deals are the people that are there. It’s the same old click and that’s what I just don’t agree with. They accuse me of having a small pool of decision makers and I’m actually going to have a wider range of people. D”C”A: Thanks Mark for taking the time to answer the questions. MG: You’re welcome Cheese. Thanks for giving me the opportunity.
