RENO, NV - December 10-15 Danny Medina went undefeated through a field of 257 total players to win the Reno Open at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada this week. Medina, from Denver Colorado, hadn t scored a win since the US Bar Table Championships 8-Ball Division back in March. Coincidentally, that tournament was also held at the Sands in Reno. Medina started off on fire with a 9-1 win over Tim Diaz from Sacramento, CA followed up by a 9-4 win over Carl Wilson from Carson City, NV and then a 9-2 win over David Anderson from Anderson, CA. Medina was then tested by Hsin Huang, a great female player from Vancouver. Hsin was just one of the ladies that turned in an excellent performance in Reno this week. She did come up short against Medina however, as he scored the 9-6 win. (Reno continued on page 10)

This tournament which is headquartered at Eagles Club #326, Bozeman, MT, was played Saturday November 30 and Sunday December 1, 2002. The Holiday Classic which is only in it s third year produced an awesome field of 92 men in the open division and 41 ladies in the women s division. By that Saturday night the field had been narrowed to 16 men in the open division finals bracket and 8 ladies in the women s division finals bracket. Before going any farther, there are some people I need to thank for all their help. Shelly Mitchell, James Deming, Wade Hudson, Jackie Gradwohl, Chuck Hoagland for helping with the brackets run here at the Eagles Club. Mike Wright for running the women s division at the Molly Brown. Leland Flint for running a bracket at the Scoop. Jim Hansen and Bones Goodale for running the second chance tournament at the Molly Brown. Here s hoping I didn t miss anybody. USPPA Classic Press Release The following is a press release regarding the USPPA Classic held in Reno, 12/5/02 thru 12/9/02. The purpose of this release is to shed light on the issues regarding 1st place bonus monies as well as other bonus related matters. With deep regret, I, Tony Annigoni, managing partner of the USPPA, using my best judgment, elected to not pay the 1st place bonus of $6000., thus preserving for the other 2500 plus members the opportunity to compete fairly for a revised bonus pool in June 2003. In my judgment, it was obvious even to the untrained eye, that the outcome of the final match was predetermined. Though less obvious, it appeared in my judgment that the outcome of the hot seat match involving the same players was also predetermined. Predetermining the outcome of a match in any USPPA tournament or any sporting event is cheating. On that basis the USPPA has the right to withhold prize money, bonus money, and revoke membership privileges as other sports associations as well as pool associations, the APA, most prominently, do on a regular basis. With rumors running rampant that this would occur, I took it upon myself to meet with the remaining 8 players, myself being one of that group, to explain the situation and make all aware of the consequences, if in my judgment this activity occurred. The players were all given the following information: lThere are 8 remaining players, 4 bonus eligible 4 not. lThe membership provision that anyone cheating will be barred for life was reviewed with all players. lPlayers were further advised that predetermining a match was cheating, and if in my judgment, cheating occurred, that bonus money would be withheld. lFurthermore the players were advised that engaging in any activity like that in a gaming facility in the State of Nevada could be considered felony bunko. The players were further advised that when they engage in activities like savers, splits and predetermined outcomes, they cheat the spectators, the host, their sponsors, the other members, as well as themselves. BREAKTHROUGH A Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem
About the Author Dean Shane Cassem
Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80 s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores by November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. PART 7 In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young Carter Keating to pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captively as Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine-ball in Willies Pool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacular nine ball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stomps off, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat. In Part Two, Wakefield and Tools Spinard challenge Gadwell and young Keating to an eight-ball match. Keating agrees, fails to make a shot the entire time, and faces the ridicule of Spinard, Wakefield, Gadwell and the other patrons in Willie s Pool Palace. Young Keating swears that he will learn to play the game, and play it well. Part III describes young Keating s rapid development as a player and, his introduction to Charley Sturgis, an old and wise mentor, who guides him to maturity, both as a pool player and as an individual. Part IV finds Keating and Charley Sturgis in Willie s Pool Palace dialoguing over a cup of coffee, talking about the rudiments of the game, and the qualities of real winners. Winter comes. Keating drops into Willie s after a winning match at a downtown parlor and whips up on Dave Wakefield in a well-played nine-ball match. Afterwards, Russell, the Thin Man, Case, offers to back him against none other than Jimmy the Stick Gadwell, the very person who had actually tutored him on the tables. In Part V, the Stick Gadwell takes a quick lead. Keating begs off to the restroom, where he has a needed talk with himself, settles himself down, then returns to the ridicule of the crowd but with a renewed spirit. Gadwell makes the nine and moves to a three game lead. The suspense grows in Part VI. Gadwell takes a six game to none lead. Then finally young Keating wins two games, making an incredible pressure shot to win his second game. The momentum begins to change as the match carries late into the night. THREE HOURS LATER, I HAD FINALLY DRAWN EVEN. We were neck and neck but I was in trouble. Gadwell had played a beautiful safe shot and left me a full table length away from a tight cluster that offered no reasonable out. Ironically, the more I studied the shot the more I reflected on something Gadwell himself had taught me. The seven and eight were frozen together, and with right English I could throw the eight enough to possibly make a combination on the nine in the corner. Carefully I studied the shot. Then, convinced that the odds were favorable, I barked out the call and boldly delivered the shot. Leaving no doubt about the outcome the eight fired out of the cluster and slammed into the face of the nine, driving it unabashedly into the pocket. A wave of cheers went up around the room and the Thin Man, heretofore silent jumped up from his seat and yelled, Incredible! Gadwell stared at me angrily. I stared back without expression. For the first time since the match had begun, I led the match. ONE HOUR LATER, I HAD NT MISSED A SHOT. PUTTING together a magnificent seven-rack run, I had gone up by ten games and forgotten about the crowd. And most of all Jimmy the Stick Gadwell. Isolated in my own world, my mind focused totally on my game. (Breakthrough continued on page 19)

Dec. 2, 2002 Mary Hopkin, of Richland, Wash., has been named media coordinator for the Northwest Women s Pool Association. Hopkin has been a working journalist for the past seven years at newspapers in Montana, Oregon, and Washington. She currently is a staff writer for the Tri-City Herald newspaper in Kennewick, Wash. She will be working closely with the current NWPA board to promote women s pool and its players throughout the Northwest. I hope to be creative and effective in attracting new media interest in women s pool , she said. Vic Valdez, director of the NWPA, said Hopkin s expertise in media will help the organization gain recognition and new corporate sponsorship. Mary s experience in the newspaper industry will be extremely beneficial as she seeks out new public relations avenues for the NWPA , said Valdez. The NWPA, a regional tour recognized by the Women s Professional Billiard Association, was formed in December 2001 Mary Hopkin to help promote excellence in women s pool throughout the Northwest. While the NWPA is a gateway for players advancing toward professional status, the organization also gives amateur players a venue where they can learn in a friendly but competitive environment. During its first year, more than 60 women, from the Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Canada, participated in six NWPA tournaments, competing for prize funds of up to $4,000 in the Northwest s top billiard rooms. A dozen of those players earned their semi-professional status from the WPBA through their participation in NWPA events in 2002, making them eligible to compete in professional events. Helena, MT The 5th Annual Toys for Tots Pool Tournament was held Saturday, Dec 14, 2002, at the Valley Hub in Helena, MT, dedicated to the memory of Lenny Johnson, a member of the Marine Corps League who was devoted to this project. There were 51 paid entries, with 48 players in the tourney. Between the cash donations, the raffle proceeds (many wonderful donated items procured by Lynda Johnson, surviving spouse of Lenny), the 50-50 Drawing, all of the entry fees and funds donated by 3 local distributors, a grand total of $1779.50 was generated for the Toys for Tots program! The Rebound Shot
This is a trick shot where the proper hit on ball X as well as the speed of stroke is critical. Set up the shot as shown in the diagram. Pay particular attention that the line of four balls by the first diamond are straight and they are all froze together. Hit the cue ball center with an easy stroke. Aim to hit one third of ball X left of center. This will make ball X rebound into the side pocket. You can make this trick shot a game situation shot by putting the nine-ball in front of the side pocket and have ball X as the lowest ball on the table. Ask your friends to guess how you will pocket the nine-ball to win the game. See if they can figure it out. If you want to see this shot and many other artistic trick shots performed, I ll be performing a Trick Shot Exhibition at City Lights in Tacoma on January 18th at 4PM. Being Human I recently found myself in a situation I was unable to resolve without help. Being pretty independent, I was having a hard time thinking of someone to ask for assistance. A poolplayer I have never run into anywhere stepped up and remedied the situation. After I regained my crumpled composure, and thanked him, we talked. In his words, he is a child of God, as we all are, and that means helping each other . It was such a jolting reality check. Living in Montana, surrounded, still, by most of the golden values like knowing & helping your neighbors & offering roadside assistance, I was nonetheless truly taken aback at the unqualified kindness of this stranger in my life. I do deeply believe in the basic goodness of human beings; however, somewhere along the line I became accustomed to all of us being human, and sloughing many of the niceties off in the hustle & bustle. I was trying to figure out which thing most surprised me - the random act of kindness or the fact it amazed me so much. It is so easy to focus on only 1/2 of the equation of living do no intentional harm. Somehow, the other half, the quietness of kindness, too easily blends into the blur of being. Years ago, a little story about committing random acts of kindness circulated through the email where I worked. We all thought it was a wonderful story and a great way of describing mindfulness. Priming the pump. What goes around comes around. We ve all heard & used those terms, but often with negative connotations. This one man, with no fuss or fanfare, stepped up to the line enveloped in his love of God and quietly committed a random act of kindness. Thank you, Robert Coleman, for being a conduit for care and for reminding me that it is not enough to not do harm. 9 Ball Qualifier Update December

The pub 181 started the annual Saturday 9 ball qualifiers Sept 21st. Every Fall the qualifiers begin. The qualifiers cover over the 20 weeks. Players receive points each time they play. The top 32 point earners over the 20 weeks will get in to the Main Event February 15th and 16th. Last year the main event added over $1900 to the event. The top point getter received bonus money of $100. The weekly format is a race to 3 and starts at Noon Saturday s. This year is a twist in that someone will win a mystery trip (heard it is Las Vegas) all you have to do to be in the drawing is to play in 12 of the 20 weeks. This drawing will take place at the Finals of the Main Event. All of those who play the 12 weeks of the session even if they don t get into the Main event can still win the trip!!!. To date 110 different people have played the Sat. qualifier. It s a little late for those to start to be in the drawing for the trip but you might get into the top 32 point places for the Main Event. Lee, a regular on the Southern California Ladies Tour, opened some eyes with her 9th place finish in August at the WPBA

Midwest Classic and was opening eyes again with her strong play in Reno this week. Medina proved to be too much for her though as he scored the 9-4 win. Medina s next opponent was last year s player of the year, Corey Deuel. While not having as good a year as last year, Deuel is always dangerous and has been playing extremely well towards the end of this year. Deuel would also test Medina but in the end, it was Medina pulling out the 9-7 victory to take the hot seat where he awaited an opponent. His opponent would be Corey Deuel again after Deuel defeated last year s Reno Open winner Rodney Morris 9-5 on the one-loss side. Morris played great all week and only suffered losses to Deuel. The 9-5 score between Deuel and Morris would be duplicated in the finals as Medina matched it with his final score against Deuel. Medina pocketed $12,000 for the win while Deuel settled for $6,000 for second. Morris and Nick Varner filled out the top four positions.

One Pocket at McQ s By: Clay Skidmore
December 7-8, 2002 SPOKANE, WA A few months ago I began to notice that a lot more of my local players were playing one pocket. So I decided to do a small tournament. I rounded up 14 local players and had a couple come from Tri-Cities to fill a 16 player board and off they went. The format was a race to two and it took all day Saturday to narrow the field to 4 players. Ken Fried was in the winners final playing Randy Morris. Don Wirtiman and Tom Newborn were the two players left on the B-side. Ken sent Randy to the B-side and Don cleaned up from there to meet Ken in the finals. Both had won five in a row to reach this point. Rodney prevailed by a 9-6 margin and waited for Parica to dispatch the winner of the EberleIverson match. No one gave either player much of a chance against Jose. No one told Max though and he jumped into an early 4-0 lead with Parica and never let up on the way to a 9-3! win. But now he had to face the invincible Mr. Morris who seemed to effortlessly demolish anyone in his way. Fresh off his third place in Reno and hungry for a second straight Hard Times title, Rodney looked confident and relaxed prior to the match. The only question seemed to be, how bad would he beat Max. Wrong question! It should have been the other way a round. Max sent a strong statement to the pool world that he has arrived, winning going away by an 11-5 wipeout. During the tournament, when asked by an onlooker what he hoped to achieve in pool, Max responded that he wanted to be a champion. He took a big step in that direction this week. Although Hard Times is not a major championship, it is always a difficult test and takes a top player s ability to win. It looked like business as usual for Mr. Palmer who seems to have whatever it takes to win his matches. When he needs to come with a big shot, he does, and when the game calls for canny strategy, he always has something clever up his sleeve. James Caras Always A Champion
Cheese just told me that my best pool hall buddy has passed away. Jimmy Caras and I had spent many happy days together in the 70 s. We booked Jimmy thirty days each year for exhibitions in Oregon and Washington. At that time he was traveling for Brunswick and once he played a spot I never had a problem booking him again. Jimmy didn t make the long runs that Willie Mosconi could make but he related to the crowd like no other performer. He was a World Champion many years, but it never went to his head; he was just one of the guys. Always a giant smile; always ready to share his humor and knowledge of the game. Jimmy never criticized the equipment or talked down to an owner or player. He once went to a show with a nice rip in the cloth as often happened with the 100% wool. Jim , I said, I ll have that sewn in a minute . I got out my needle heated and bent it, threaded the needle. Pat, bend another needle and I ll show you how it s done, says Jimmy, and he showed me the baseball stitch. You know I traded selling equipment and work because Brunswick would never put me on the tour while they had Mosconi and Hoppe. Jim knew the business from top to tip. He always tipped his own cues and showed me the trick of punching the extra holes in the tip for surface. He knew tables and what to expect after one test shot. Jimmy Caras was a great player and the lifetime average between Jimmy and Willie Mosconi was 2 games for Jimmy and 1 for Mosconi out of three. He had Willie s number and Willie hated it. He hated Jimmy for it. In the 60 s Wide World of Sports sponsored a three game match between the two greats. It drew a tremendous audience especially for the third and final match. Each had won one game and Mosconi was in the lead on the third game. A long reach was required for a very important shot and Willie always liked to show his ballerina ability to lean over the table and balance on one toe. With tens of thousands watching Clank and Willie miscued and went to the chair to watch Jimmy take the game and the Big Cash. We always arranged for Jimmy and his English born wife to play here over St. Patrick s Day. There were no exhibitions scheduled on the 17th & 18th, only party time. My wife and most of our friends were from Ireland. We would have a real Irish party with the Nobel call. Each person was required to (Caras continued on page 23)

As promised last issue, How The Magic Works or How to Make a Tip Stick. After trying all the glues that didn t work in the early 1980 s I came across Satalite City and their full line of super glues. They make three thicknesses, red a thin easy flowing, yellow a thicker slower dry and green a very heavy gap filling glue. The first step in a successful job is to get both surfaces clean and as flat as possible. Super Pat Sheehan glue works by the cyanoacrylate chemical attracting molecules of both surfaces so anything that stands in between will cause the bond to fail. There is a chain of molecules that builds up on the bond. One molecule that grabs the H2O molecules on each surface and holds the two surfaces as though they are one. We use a 12 disc sander to clean the ferrule (You probably don t have one, but a cue top sander at about $10 from me or others). To clean the tip 80 grit sandpaper on a piece of glass or on a flat board, with an awl poke a few holes in the tip for added surface area. We do a lot of cues for taverns and hand use locations, so to really make a tip stick even if the cue hits the cement floor; we put a drop of Green Super T on the ferrule and a drop of Red on the tip and press together at once. A shot of NCF accelerator to hold in place and slip it into a 6 ft. pipe clamp for 2 minutes. If you miss the bond or the tip is not centered take the tip off and reclean both surfaces. Super glue does not stick well to super glue. If you do stick your fingers together, nail polish remover will free them. If you are just doing a few cues the Yellow glue will give excellent results on its own. Put a drop on the tip and the ferrule and press together with your thumb. Hold it for about 30 seconds then put the cue butt up resting on the tip. The more glue you put on the longer you have to hold them together. Now you are ready to trim the tip. We have a special jig on the 12 sander but a very sharp knife works very well. Invert the cue on a piece of wood; make a small cut following the ferrule pushing forward and downward. Taking tiny bites turn the cue into the knife and trim the tip as flush as possible with out making it cone shaped. Finish with fine sandpaper. On a good cue start with 240 sandpaper spinning the cue touching only the ferrule and tip working finer grits to 600. Clean the shaft with the Sheehan s Super Cue Stick Cleaner and sand with 1000 grit or R & S plastic abrasives. Now round the tip by folding a sheet of 60 grit paper in thirds and cup in your hand pulling toward you at a 30o angle to round to the shape of a nickel. Sheehan s tip topper will make the job quicker and give perfect results $10. Now comes the part that makes the tip look like a pro did it. Burnish the sidewall with a piece of leather (we make a form fitting burnisher shaped to fit a cue $6) by wetting the topsides with water or a little spit. Bring the leather downward and squeezing give the tip about 50 strokes or until it shines. This way the tip will not mushroom. Since we have cleaned and sanded the shaft you must now seal it or the sand particles from the cue chalk will work its way into the pores of the wood. I use a special blend of French polishing lacquer adding just a drop or two on a rag and buffing till it squeaks. You re now ready to do great harm to your opponent at the table. OTB

I simply could not resist a rebuttal to the articles by Jeff Boucher, Mary Price, and Andrew Monstis. I have had the pleasure of being more intimately exposed to this blatant disrespect of the game than most, since the place I have called home the past six years is the leader in this anti-talent movement. The pool establishments in my area have made one excuse after another for the past six or eight years as to why a few select players are not welcome and it always boils down to the same thing. They hate losing to anyone who displays an obvious amount more talent than them. The real sacrilege here is not only harming that game of pool and it s future among other sports, but also settling for mediocrity hurts each and every player with good talent. Lowering the bar is not the right way to make someone think they are jumping higher. When I first started playing tournaments I lived in small rural community almost 150 miles from the place I have lived for the last six years. Many of my comrades and I would make that round trip nearly every Friday night for the nickel jackpot tournaments, very rarely even placing in the money. This was us traveling week in and week out on our rent money just so we could be exposed to better players than we had in our immediate area. Surely enough T R Olson we were met every week by the same groups of players who gladly took our rent money and offered up action with smiles on their faces. Haven t seen any of that lately! Now skip ahead a few years and I started not only placing in the money often, but nearly winning every nickel I played in and even placing high in the occasional larger tournament. I always simply figured this started to happen because I had taken my lumps, but some others seem to think that I just woke up one morning and was magically able to start winning tournaments. They begrudged me so for this magical transformation that next thing you know there were 10 different excuses for why I was not allowed to play, depending on who you talked to or where you went. One that still rubs me wrong is the rumor that I wanted to fight anyone who beat me in my town, not true, but more importantly there was maybe 2 or 3 times that I ever lost to

From the volume of email that I m receiving I can see not only that they are enjoyed- they are also provoking thought. And if you stand in a place where the articles sit you know that some of the provoked thought is centered around myself. Because of this I ve been getting to the local rooms to be accessible for questioning. So far I ve only gotten to speak with 2 people in this regard. One is the best one pocket player that Oregon offers. (Oregon only gets to offer this quality because he s visiting) He wants to play so we re gonna get that done. I ll call him MR. BILL. The other one was with Mr. Bill and I ll call him.........Dale. And Dale is the one that had the kind of talk with me that I am now going to the poolrooms to make possible. For Dale, he is discussing a difficult thing; and the first step in coming over is complex. I thank him here for that moment. As we spoke there were a few who remained angry and away. We will have to wait and see what they glean from Dale. I wouldn t want to go through the debriefing they re going to give him. And they could have done as he did and talk. It ll work though because I ll be back and open to a second interview. Here is my gift to you in this season
of giving. In order for you to be able to make sense of me you would first have to know whether or not I am skilled in the thing that you value so muchand from there you cannot make sense of me without knowing how I feel about having that skill and from there you would have to know how I feel about competing. And then you d have to know how I feel about competing with you. Some of you in Oregon are left to sift through a few gambling stories about me with your local heroes. Come and find out the rest of the story. We can name the names and the results. The next gift I ll give you is: that you don t know how I feel about the things that you discuss. You project onto all of this the way that you would feel if you were spoken of as I m sometimes spoken of. The way that you respond is not the only possible response to what you see as compliments. One of your angers is that I exist without you. You cannot insult me no matter. And
you leave this article with new wisdom as you read that you c a n n o t compliment me either. You see my friend both of those come from within. Words are a form of currency and come in various denominations. You cannot go to China and decide for the Chinese people what your dollar is worth to them. You do not get to come to me and dictate the value that I place on what you say. If you said to me that I was the greatest player on earth and you said it in Swahili, we can t transact because I don t know what value to place on the words. If you said in Hungarian that I was the worst player on earth, we have a like circumstance. I cannot put value to the words. Forget about me and take this new way out into your life. It is a skill of absolute value. I ve got a joke for you. What is the difference between a pool player and a pepperoni pizza?? a pepperoni pizza can feed a family of four.
And now to the meat of this article. I was only going to give you a trick shot this month and call it a day. Then with each poolroom visit something went on that I think you ll have interest in and be entertained by. After the above visit I went to Hot Shots in Beaverton, Oregon. There s a young woman named Alisa working there that has asked me to instruct her and we plan to start in January. She asked me about a trick shot that she heard about and I agreed to show it. I tell you in advance that it s a McGill original and you may never have a chance to master this one. Not because you couldn t master it, you could. It s not likely because in order to practice it you d have to lock the room owner in the janitor s closet first. Here is a description of the shot. Place a 9-ball in the jaws of the corner pocket. Stand parallel to that same end rail and away from the table (the side of the table you re on is opposite the side that the nine is sitting on) you should be standing 10 to 12 feet away and 3 to 4 feet behind the extended short rail line. NOW-bounce the cue ball off of the floor and go three rails to make the nine. I am at about 85% efficiency on this shot. I made it for her on the third shot. Shotze s Fall Classic by: Ford November 23rd & 24th, 2002 Everett, WA The 7th annual Fall Classic 9-Ball tournament at Shotze s in Everett was one of the strongest fields ever! The players came from all over the west coast, to form a full field of 40! We also had a waiting list of six, waiting for some one not to show. With the players meeting and some other business out of the way, the (l to r) John Doherty, Rose Wilson tournament started and things heated up right away. It was the same all day as play was stopped at 8pm, just before the night crowd came in. Sunday morning brought back the 12 players that were in the money! In the end two players stood tall over all that came to the show, those two were John Doherty and Rafael Martinez. Saturday John Doherty (aka JD) defeated Fred Bangayan 7-3, and The Monk 7-1. On Sunday he defeated Dan Louie 8-7, Alan Ima 8-4. Rafael Martinez defeated Stan Tourangeau 7-3, Mike Lycar 7-2. Sunday he defeated Darryl Dunn 8-0, and Ed Montal twice 8-6, 8-3. For the point or hot seat it was JD 8-5 over Rafael Martinez .

The finals were one race to 11, with every one looking for a great match. In the end the match went to the hill 10/10. On his way to winning the match, JD had to make a jump shot over the nine to make the eight! He then sank the nine and the tournament was his. Linda Carter was the only woman that went up against this field of men! Remember with five or more woman we pay high woman. amazed. She just kept laughing and didn t know what to say. Everyone else in the room froze and acted as though nothing had happened. They went out of their way to act as though it was nothing!? I just want to put that in here so maybe it ll look stupid to continue doing it. It is one of the most difficult things that I face. Why do you do it? Pat Sheehan Man of the Cloth (see page 12) had me on his radio show for nearly a year as a weekly guest. When he heard about the shot from a caller he rushed me to a sponsors room after the show and I made it for him on the second and third shots. The best I ve done with it locally is 4 times in a row at Cue s Billiard s in Gresham, Oregon. Then I was having a class and exhibition last night with a new student named Micke and a young man named Jason. (Jason got nickname monkeys because he works at the primate research center) I will describe the shot that they had a reaction to that only my students seem to understand or find humor in. It s the shot that ends the class and I wind up standing alone and with an open time slot. They just leave. It is fun to see that reaction and I would still rather they stay and ...........well stay and do what, I don t know now that I have thought about it. Here s the shot: stand at the nameplate and place the 5ball frozen on the rail and on the 1st diamond to your right. Now move it to the left 1 object ball width. It is better for you to move it to the left more than a ball width, say a ball and a third, ball and a quarter, etc. Now go to the opposite short rail and face the nameplate. Place the cue ball midway between the nearest edge of the pocket on your right and the 1st diamond. Now we are going to move the cue ball out from the rail any distance that you like to bridge from to a maximum of 8 inches. And from here we cut the

It s like I couldn t get a word smoothly across a sentence made of ball bearings. Sometimes I tell em that although they think that I stutter I don t, it s because I m dubbed in English. And the all time favorite is that it ain t stuttering, I m just hooked on phonics! Time for me to go. I m gonna email my friend Jay Krause and see what he remembers about our road trip to San Fransisco and Palace Billiards. We may be able to get a good article and story out of it. Jay works with Nabisco and he would play with me nearly every day after work and we had a ball. The problem is that he would come in after work and have a smoother stroke than I had. It was maddening. And more so maddening that he couldn t see it! One of the things that I say to up and coming players regularly is that you can t beat us after work. Vancouver, BC - Nov 28 - Dec 1, 2002 Twenty-three year old Simon Pickering of British Columbia almost defeated defending champion John Schmidt of Alabama with some spectacular play. The final scoreline was 15-12 and it was a great match all the way. Simon had earlier defeated Dan Louie 11-2 and also knocked out Paul Potier, Kirk Stevens, Bernie Mikkelsen and Edwin Montal after going early to the B-Side. Potier put out John Horsfall 11-8. The highest finishing woman was Hsin Huang of Vancouver who picked up an extra $1,000. There was a separate women s event on Sunday for the others which was won by Kyoko Sone of Japan who defeated Joanne Ashton in the final by a score of 7-6. Photo by Edwarde

Room Owners Rate Poolhall Junkies Bill Bauer, Gripper Cue Caddy, Spokane, WA I thought Poolhall Junkies was as good or better than The Color of Money. The pool scenes were believable, the hustles were great. Show me a sequal! Mars Callahan was great, Chazz was great and Christopher Walken was outstanding. I believe it will create more interest in playing pool.

Team Europe From: Luke Riches, Matchroom Sport Europe 12 - 9 USA Team Europe have won the Mosconi Cup for the first time in seven years on an emotional night of high drama at Bethnal Green s York Hall. It was Steve Davis who sunk the winning 9-ball after his arch pool nemesis Earl Strickland missed critical ball in the 21st game of the tournament. That was a cue for mass bedlam as the six hundred or so pool fans at the atmospheric venue raised the roof. In what was a battle of cuesports giants, Steve Davis opened the proceedings in what was the final game and played a nice snooker with no pot available after the break. Strickland though, escaped from it and then Steve crazily missed the 1 ball trying to edge it into the pack and with ball in hand Strickland cleared. Earl broke and ran in the next to put the USA 2 - 0 ahead and things were looking ominous for Davis. He broke well, however, in the next and with the layout looking good, Davis ran out to get off the mark and within a rack of Earl. A horror scratch by Strickland in the fourth put Davis back at the table. He took the 1 and 2 but left himself a tough one on the pink 5. Steve used the rest and although he made the shot he had no chance to pot the 5 and played safe. Earl had a chance to pocket the five via the rail but missed too leaving the five on. Davis took it and cleared a tough layout to go 2 - 2. In the next Davis got the crowd going as he stroked home his break shot and cleared the table to out the Europeans 3 - 2 to the good. Strickland made a ball on the break but missed a long cut on the 2 ball into a blind pocket. Davis leapt out of his chair. Steve miscued though, on a straight orange 5 to give it back to Strickland and he ran out to make it 3 - 3. Davis broke off in the seventh and two balls dropped and left him a nice shot on the 2-ball. From there he took the rack with a calm, methodical clearance. With Europe on the hill, Strickland stepped up to the plate to break. Two balls disappeared but the problem ball was the orange 5 which was locked up on the rail with the 8 ball. He took it though after gaining perfect position. From there Strickland cleared to go 4 - 4. With Davis breaking for the Mosconi Cup, he had no shot on the 2 ball after the 1 went down. He pushed out and Strickland trapped him in a snooker. Davis scratched making a table length bank shot to give Earl ball in hand. Earl dished but ran out of position on the green 6. There was a hush as he cued up on a tight cut into the top right hand pocket and a roar went up as Strickland missed. With three balls separating Europe from a historic Mosconi Cup victory Steve Davis steered them home as he nudged in the 6, put the black 8 into the same pocket and then came down the table for that historic 9 ball.

I made three balls on the next break but got tied up behind the four. Opting to push out I played safe and gave Gadwell a difficult long shot that required a deft touch. He made the shot, and miraculously maneuvered the cue ball in perfect position for the next shot. I sat down in my chair and said to Charley, here we go again. Charley said without expression, maybe. Gadwell stroked the five and followed through. The moment he shot I knew he was in trouble. At the last instant, he jerked up. The five headed straight for the hole, but missed just enough to catch the tip of the corner pocket. Like a bouncing ball it rebounded to the other side of the pocket, caught the tip and bounced right back to the other side again. Only this time, it bounced beyond the pocket and stalled directly in front. I don t believe it, I exclaimed. Breakthrough, Charley said. Resisting the urge to rush the shot, I took my time, holed the five, and ran the rack. Forty minutes later, I pocketed the nine on the break and completed a five rack run. The momentum had shifted dramatically, and I was in dead stroke. Stick! Tools Spinard yelled, then jerked his head so that Gadwell raised his eyebrows and crossed over to where Spinard was sitting. Spinard turned Gadwell toward him and muttered something under his breath. Gadwell listened intently, then canted his head and nodded with clenched lips. He glanced toward Russell Case, then said something to Spinard and crossed over to the Thin Man. The room became still. Outside a car flew by and combined with the street laterns to light up the swirling ice storm. Across the street, tree limbs heavy laden with ice bowed low to the street. I wondered about Pop, where he was and how he was doing. The furnace cycled and I felt a hot rush of air in my face. I watched as the ceiling fans pushed the warm air downward. Crossing over to the counter, I ordered a cup of coffee then sauntered over to Charley Sturgis. What s going on? He crunched his nose, and lifted his eyes then shrugged and said, maybe they want to raise the bet. I leaned my cue stick against the chair between my legs then leaned back and took a deep breath. The Thin Man emerged out of the pack. Forming a hookem horns with his right hand, he shoved them to his mouth and whistled loudly. The crowd quieted, the room became still. Case, with shoulders back, took in a large volume of air then yelled out over the crowd, Mr. Gadwell and Mr. Spinard have conceded the match! I froze. Charley Sturgis clenched his fist, drew it down to his chest and calmly yelped Whoopee, in his loudest voice. Then he extended his hand in my direction. I took it and squeezed gently then sat back in my chair and sighed. Bettors from every direction rushed to collect their winnings. I was alone. The Thin Man, almost lost within the crowd, glanced over a shoulder and gave me a thumbs up. Doc Keating we re gonna call ya! He yelled. Grinning so that his aged cheeks gleamed, he added, Sliced the Stick up like a friggin surgeon! Eddy Cooksey elbowed through the crowd and came over to shake my hand. Incredible, Carter, he remarked nasally. Thin Man s right. Cut him up like a surgeon all right. Piece by piece. I laughed then turned to Charley Sturgis and said, can you believe it, Charley? A breakthrough, he replied. And a new name, too. Doc Keating. I chuckled and replied, that too, Charley. Eyeing the rest of the room, I leaned in and said, think I ll scoot out while I have the chance. Tell the Thin Man for me, will you, Charley? Yep. Reaching down, I picked up my cue case and slipped my cue stick inside. Carter, Charley said abruptly. Yeah, I replied, my head down. Might want to look across the room. I looked up. Suddenly my eyes fixed on the familiar trench coated figure facing me. It was Pop. Staring at me as though I d just won the world series, smiling from ear to ear. Pop! I shouted. Launching from the chair I rushed around the tables toward him. He opened his arms and embraced me as I drew closer. You were watching, Pop? I asked. Yes, he replied. Pause. Your mama would have been proud, Son. I thought about you, Pop. And Mama. He leaned back, held me by the elbows and looked straight at me and said. She always said it takes guts and smarts to win. You got both. Pause. Time for a cup of coffee? Sure, Pop. Now? Nod. Ready? I nodded. As we turned and headed for the exits he put his arm over my shoulder and squeezed my neck. When we got outside, we flipped our collars up, pocketed our hands and headed for the car. Radio said it s the coldest day of year, he remarked. Uh huh, I replied, opening the car door. But somehow I thought, the cold didn t matter. Two breakthroughs had just occurred in my life. One on the tables, one with my father. And that was enough for any person in one night.

Kim Davenport Suffers Eye Injury
from: Billiards Digest At the end of October, veteran 9-ball star Kim Davenport was competing in the UPA Atlanta Open, fighting for a spot on the U.S. team for the upcoming Mosconi Cup in London. Today, the 47year-old Modesto, Calif., pro is fighting for his professional pool player life. Davenport, the 1990 Billiards Digest Player of the Year and a many-times pro tour champion, has only limited vision in his right eye, the result of a freak golf accident at a local driving range on Nov. 16. His chances of regaining full vision in the eye are uncertain. According to Davenport, an avid golfer Kim Davenport who sports a 3 handicap, a lawn mower kicked up a golf ball, which ricocheted off a metal post next t0 Davenport s practice tee, and struck him directly in the eye. It knocked me right to the ground, said Davenport. I didn t know what happened. I couldn t see a thing, and I was scared to death. An ambulance came and rushed me to the hospital. A CT scan eliminated concern over possible bleeding in the brain, but severe bleeding left Davenport completely blind in the eye for more than a week. The doctors don t know what will happen, said Davenport, who has regained some of the vision in his eye since the accident. They don t think I ll ever get 100 percent of my vision back, and they ve discussed a cornea transplant. They won t really know what the options are until January. The setback comes during a period in which Davenport had regained a spot in the men s top 10 rankings. He s posted four top-10 finishes in 2002, including the Sands Regency title in June. I ve been playing well, Davenport said. But if I never get to play pool again, I ve had 17 great years. It s just a bad roll. A nice sunny day that went dark. OTB

Jammers Bar & Grill of Salem will be making a few changes for the New Year. Our Friday night tournament has been an 8-ball qualifier for 3 years running. Starting in January, we will be hosting 9 ball tournaments instead. The format will be BCA rules, race to 3, double elimination, and $5 entry with the house matching the pot. The field will close at 32 players and you must be signed up by 7:15 pm. Start time is 7:30. High woman money will be added to the tournament provided there are at least 3 women entered. We also have tournaments on Saturday and Sunday (please see our ad). There s a new cook (Cecelia) in the kitchen and she has a particular flair for Italian and Mexican food. There are new specials on the menu, such as Chicken Pine Nut Tortellini and Chicken Parmesan or Carne Asada. Not to mention burgers, steaks, or Salem s best ribs. Come by Jammers, have dinner and play on the best equipment in town.

I would like to use this opportunity to explain my position on just why these activities should be considered cheating. Savers - A saver is when two players prior to a match or a tournament agree to compensate each other some amount up to a split either after the match or after the tournament. Tournament savers occur when players recognize that the draw has left them in favorable positions or positions where the involved players don t meet further out in the tournament. Splits - At the end of the event, players agree to split 1st & 2nd. This appears to only affect those players, but in reality an event is made up by many players, some of who have not attained a skill level high enough that another player would be willing to extend the same opportunity to. Fixes - Predetermined matches fall in this category. We are all aware that Boxing, Horseracing, and major sports such as Basketball and Baseball have been victimized by conspiratorial acts by the players. In sports that are above the radar like football and those mentioned, the public relations fallout can be extreme to the point that large financial losses by teams and even local economies can be attributed to them. This is particularly insidious behavior when spectators as well as other players are encouraged to bet on the side, which is frequently done, and in my judgment occurred in our tournament. Drugs - This is an obvious form of cheating. Players use drugs to either enhance their performance or settle their nerves which is a form of performance enhancement. All the issues mentioned above are certainly not a complete set. I am also well aware that this may sound funny coming from Tony Annigoni, the subject of Playing Off the Rail. I would like to point out that in my extended pool career, on occasion, I have engaged in all of these scams. It is (USPPA continued on page 26)

The Thursday night 8-ball tournaments have been a huge success at Funsters Casino in SeaTac, WA. With a low entry fee of $5 and $500 added, this is the premiere weekly tournament! Funsters is adding another night to its roster $500 added, $10 entry fee 9-Ball on Wed. nights starting January 8 th . Signups start at 6:30. High woman is paid if there are over 5 women entered. As you can see, the best of the NW are making their appearances for this, but with the low entry fee, some league and tavern players are also showing up and making it into the money. sing, dance, recite or tell a story. Jimmy had one I could never forget. A pool player missed church every Sunday to play pool so he refused heaven and went to the Devil who welcomed him with open arms and took him to a room with 100 of the most beautiful tables he had ever seen covered with Simonis cloth and thousands of spectators seated in Opra chairs. Of course he challenged the first one he saw. The spectator said, Do you see any balls or cues? No, said the new arrival. That s the hell of it . The most unforgettable match I saw Jimmy play was against Everett Andrews at my Uncle s room, Wayne s Billiard Academy . Jimmy had been at Oregon State University on an exhibition the night before and was having a severe gall baldder attack and Everett was a top player. They played pretty close for a while until Everett got off a run of eighty and Jimmy just began to look worse and worse. Everett thought, If I beat Caras I might never hustle a game as long as I live. So he left Jimmy wide open. Jimmy ran about five and missed. Everett ran the rack and just broke the next rack wide open missing the 15-ball. Jimmy struggled to get out of the chair and ran a few and missed. Everett, don t embarrass me, finish it off. Everett did just that. Jimmy excused himself, went to the Men s Room and got sick, washed his hands and face and came back to put on the greatest trick and fancy shot show he had ever done. He took the time to show the players the finer points of the game. He spent over an hour and a half extra that night. He went over to Everett and I and said, Thanks for the game. I can t be champ every day. Everett replied, Jimmy, you were a champion
today as you are every day. I may never get another game in Portland but thanks for the game and the experience. When Jimmy was raised to the BCA Hall of Fame, there were two chairs empty at the head table with all the Big Shots. Jimmy and Marge were having dinner with two unknowns at the back of the banquet hall. When they called for Jimmy, he stood up and said, I m back here with my best friends Pat & Brigid Sheehan from Portland. Marge and Brigid and myself did the best cheers, a hip-hip-hooray when Jimmy accepted the award. The cheers came from the back of the hall. Jimmy, I know that you will make it through the Pearly Gates. There will be balls and cues for you to show the Big Boys how it s done and I will be there to put the Simonis cloth on for you. Mr. James Caras passed away on December 3, 2002. There was a memorial service on Saturday, December 7 at 11:00 a.m. at HardageGiddens Funeral Home. 6940 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32211. Mr. Caras, born in 1910 in Scranton, PA, won his first world championship in 1936 and also won world championships in 1938, 1939 and 1949. In 1967, he won the U.S. Open in a field of 48 players. His record of most balls , most games won and fewest innings by a champion still stand in the record book for that size field. Mr. Caras was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame in 1977.

With a 7-5 victory in the finals, #1 ranked Karen Corr has defeated Allison Fisher and won the WPBA Women s National 9-Ball Championship in Miami Florida. Corr, who had watched her lead on the WPBA points list dwindle to 155 points prior to this event, came out strong a n d scored victories over Kelly Oyama, L i n e Kjoersvik Karen Corr and eventual third place finisher Monica Webb by a combined score of 27-8. Vivian Villarreal then forced a hill-hill nail-biter that Corr pulled out 9-8 before the first of two victories over Fisher for first place. Fisher also started strong, scoring wins over sixteen year old Austrian sensation Jasmin Ouschan and Dawn Hopkins before a 9-0 win over Ewa Laurence. Former World Champion Julie Kelly gave Fisher a test before falling 9-7, which lead to Fisher s first match with Corr, that match was won in convincing fashion 9-4 by Corr. Fisher won a very close 7-5 match with Monica Webb on the one loss side that saw both players trade games until the 5-5 mark when Fisher took control for the victory. The final match with Corr was similar to the previous match with Webb in that it was very closely contested and tied at 55. This time, it was Corr that took control and took the final two games for the win. Corr collected $11,000 for the win with Fisher taking $8000 for second. Webb and Loree Jon Jones finished in third and fourth for their best finishes this year. Corr s lead on the WPBA points list will remain at 155 points moving into next season. OTB

anyone other than my friends from out of town. Those 2 or 3 times were either to my roommate or one of my best friends in town and I don t think any of these people would confirm this behavior. Meanwhile back at the ranch. As a result of removing the good players from the rooms, I have witnessed an obvious drop in the talent pool. When players are forced to set their sights on beating a couple of B rated jetters or overrated league players there is no wonder the whole level of competition would drop. If you want to be a league player, feel free, and no tournament player or gambler will ever hold that against you, but at least treat these people with the respect deserved by someone who has dedicated themselves enough to get that good in the first place. Believe it or not it does take dedication. Seize these as opportunities to learn, not lose. You have to know how to lose long before learning how to win. There is one more underlying factor to this that all the B players cannot even relate to. The fact that this attitude by certain small groups has caused numerous players to hang it up all together and I myself have entertained this thought over the past few years. I went to the point of not even touching a cue for over a year, but then I decided to once again reach out to another venue where talent is not out of place, but rather appreciated. By all means this has proved to be blessing to my game being that I get very little time to practice these days it helps greatly to only play against top level players. Sort of keeps your mind in the right place if you will. In the same way that this sort of treatment is flattering , as some would have you believe, it is detrimental to the progression of pool into the mainstream. What would basketball be without MJ, Magic, Bird and what would golf be without Michelson, Duvall, and
Woods? Not very exciting, huh? Well pool already struggles with its skill being under appreciated by the laymen. Why would anyone who cares about the game want to do anything to deface it? I mean really ego can only go so far. These same establishments that have barred the good players might draw 2% to 5% of their annual from pool in the first place, but they would have you believe that if 4 or 5 different players don t show up every Friday night that they will go under. On the other hand at least 50 to 60% of their income is derived from gaming machines and they seem to not have much of a conscience about that either, so I guess that alone tells you what kind of morals we are dealing with in the first place. One guy I know in particular who was not only a good pool player, but also a very avid machine gambler, spent somewhere between 20k and 30k a year in the machines at this one place where we all play pool. Goes without saying he might experience some personal strife from this type of behavior, which he did, and do you think the owner of the establishment would stop enabling him in anyway. No, instead he extended a very generous amount of credit to this guy repeatedly, allowing him to get in far over his head, then he tells him you can t play in my pool tournaments until you make this debt right, but would still allow him to come in to play the machines. What a humanitarian. These are exactly the kind of people who will be weeded from the pool world in time. It s not like we need or want them involved in our passion anyway. Cheese says 1000 words so I am being strangled, but good luck and safe travels this season to each and every lover of the game and happy holidays to all. Keep a tight rack! something that I regret having done, in tournament play especially. More often then not, I have just remained silent when they occurred with my tacit consent. The biggest alarm for me is every day I read the sports page and see nothing at all about pool mentioned. Loudest of all, amid the silent message is lack of a point spread or any odds available on a pool match. That redefines really below the radar . Maybe we should try for All Star Wrestling if all it is about is prize money. My company, Two Cushion Club, has just been fortunate enough to acquire a major non-industry sponsor, a major off shore sports betting organization. Finally, let me say that I am personally disappointed in any players that think this behavior is acceptable, as well as for them. Further, I am disappointed in the billiard industry for leaving the competitive side of the game in a condition where it makes more sense to some players to engage in these activities than just to play straight. Last but certainly not least, I am most disappointed in myself for not having enough ability to positively influence the players to make better decisions for the long-term success of our sport.
