A STAR OF AN ARTICLE

(Re: Rocket Science, Issue 288)

I really enjoyed the features on space mistakes and the space race. What a fascinating topic! It’s not one typically covered in frum magazines, and it really sparked my imagination.

It’s amazing to see that Hashem gave humans the ability to transcend the limitations of Earth and actually reach the moon and outer space. The story about the Apollo mission that had to be “slingshotted” back to earth by harnessing the moon’s own gravity was mind-boggling!

I would love to read more about space missions. I found that reading on the topic was like a mental vacation, just what I needed at this very hectic time of year. Thanks for playing such a starring role in the community!

EVERYONE IN THEIR PLACE

(Re: Let’s Do Better, Inbox, Issue 288)

Unfortunately, I agree with last week’s letter about children sitting while the adults around them remain standing. I find that this happens at public events, such as at hachnasas Sifer Torah celebrations, Megillah leining on Purim, and other similar occasions.

Please, mothers! We can do better!

We are raising the generation that will bring Moshiach. It’s not about who came first or even about the needs of elderly people. Children should simply be taught basic derech eretz: “We offer seats to adults.”

Thank you for an amazing publication.

ALLERGIC REACTION

(Re: Petals, Pollen and a Whole Lot of Tissues, Issue 287)

The ideas for resolving allergies are nice, and perhaps offer relief for some, but truly curing allergies involves healing the lining of the respiratory and digestive tracts. When there are tiny, microscopic holes in the mucus linings, too-big particles cross the divide into the bloodstream, triggering allergies and a host of other health conditions. Healing the lining involves improving one’s diet and taking probiotics, particularly with good fats and fermented foods.

The help of a professional in the field can be useful.

SEARCHING FOR TREATMENT

(Re: No More Allergies, Inbox, Issue 286)

This is in response to the letter-writer who said she got allergy shots instead of Singulair/ montelukast. I’m wondering which doctor she used because my doctor recently retired, and I’m desperately looking for an allergist who does this allergy treatment. It has been very effective for me in reducing my symptoms, but I have not finished the entire treatment yet.

If anyone knows of a doctor who does allergy shots in Boro Park, I would appreciate it if you can contact me through The Boro Park View

GRADUATION GIFTS

Dear Graduates,

First, I want to wish you mazel tov upon reaching this major milestone. Second, I’d like to raise awareness about the following: Perhaps it’s time to shift gears, and instead of parents feeling obligated to give their daughter a gift upon her graduation, they should be getting a gift (or, at minimum, a thank-you note) from their child, expressing her appreciation!

Can anyone ever repay their parents for the time, money and emotional energy they invested in helping their children succeed during their school years?

MIRACULOUS YESHUA

Your Neighbor and Hostess

Our family ran a large fundraising campaign, and with the generous support of many, we raised a large sum for a beautiful mikvah on behalf of Mikvah Tahara Association.

We put in a lot of energy into coordinating a special gathering as part of this campaign, specifically as a zechus for my sister who had been waiting five long years for a child. We ourselves understood that yearning, waiting over three years for children of our own.

A few months later we welcomed a baby girl into our family. But the miracle didn’t stop there. My sister, in whose merit we dedicated that party, was also helped with a yeshua. It feels like such a bracha, all as a result of our efforts for the mikvah fundraising project. We would like to publicly express our gratitude to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

WHEN YOU VISIT A ZOO, WHICH ANIMAL FASCINATES YOU MOST,

AND WHY?

76% MONKEYS

of participants are most captivated by (or apes).

FYI: Monkeys and apes are both distinct families within the primate order. Their main differences are that monkeys have tails and apes don’t, apes are larger than monkeys, and their limbs are smaller than those of monkeys compared to the rest of their bodies.

HERE’S WHY OUR READERS FIND MONKEYS SO FASCINATING!

They exhibit such humanlike behaviors that I find them mesmerizing.

It’s so interesting to watch the way they interact with each other and their young.

I guess I relate to monkeys because as a kid, I was climbing everywhere. As an adult, I would still love such action at times, but I won’t tell!

They are extremely intelligent, and it’s such nifloas haBorei to observe their problem-solving skills.

They are full of fun and always look like they’re enjoying life.

I can stare at apes for hours! It’s fascinating to see how similar they act to humans.

They top the list because they are just so cute and similar to humans in a comical way. In truth, it’s my husband who enjoys the animals more than any of my children!

Their interaction with each other is so fascinatingly cute!

They act a lot like humans, and they get around very fast.

AND THERE’S SO MUCH MORE WONDER TO BEHOLD.

I love kangaroos! It’s their pockets for their young that fascinate me, as well as the way they hop. I always wonder how it would be for us mothers to have a pocket in which to carry our babies.

I enjoy jungle animals like lions, giraffes and elephants, because they’re a rare sight in area zoos.

The lion — for its mightiness!

There’s nothing like plain, oldfashioned parrots.

I enjoy whichever animal is awake and active!

My kids love elephant shows. It’s unbelievable to see what they are capable of doing despite their size!

I love observing the way the penguins waddle, and I enjoy looking at their stark coloring. All of them! Each one is captivating in its own way. The monkeys and how they interact with each other, the lions in all their majesty, and when it comes to elephants, their size alone is awe-inspiring! I find every single animal just incredibly fascinating.

My favorite animals are definitely monkeys and penguins, for similar reasons: They both act in ways that remind me of humans — monkeys resemble us more, but even penguins have human-like traits in the way they walk communicate with one another. Watching their behaviors and way of life really captures my imagination, and I enjoy spending time just observing them. The experience just screams: Mah rabu maasecha Hashem!

Each member of our family finds a different animal most interesting.

For our father it’s the lion, because of the beautiful pesukim featuring it:

“Hisgaber k’ari” and “Aryeh shoyeig, mi lo yira? ” There’s also something about watching the king of the jungle sitting around and doing nothing.

My mother is in awe of peacocks and their pretty dresses.

My teenage brother is fascinated by the sloth, an animal that sleeps 20 hours each day, and my teenage sister by the owl, because it seems so intelligent.

The little boys love the monkeys. No surprise there!

Please submit your answer by Tuesday night, June 24, for a chance to see it in print!

PARSHAS SHELACH

To Remember

In this parsha, we are given the mitzvah of tzitzis. The Torah tells us, “U’re’isem oso u’zechartem es kol mitzvos Hashem” (Bamidbar 15:39). The mitzvah of tzitzis will remind us of all other mitzvos.

The pasuk continues, “And you shall not wander after your hearts and eyes… L’maan tizkeru, so you shall remember and perform all My mitzvos.”

Why does this warning — not to wander after our hearts and eyes — appear here, in the middle of the discussion of tzitzis?

And, why does the Torah repeat itself, telling us “u’zechartem” and then again “l’maan tizkeru ”?

Reb Gamliel Rabinowitz, shlit”a, shared the following two anecdotes:

SPIRITS WERE HIGH as men crowded around the Purim table. Under the influence of wine, the Raavad of Yerushalayim, Rav Dovid Jungreis, zt”l, was sharing words of wisdom with the talmidei chachamim of the Holy City. Beautiful pearls of Torah flowed as smoothly as the wine on the table. It was a breathtaking display of vast knowledge in literally every single area of Torah, and the guests were drinking it all in.

It was well-known that Rav Dovid possessed mastery over all subjects, from Shas to halachah and beyond. In fact, the Satmar Rav, zy”a, once commented that when Rav Dovid Jungreis was around, it was unnecessary to look inside any sefer, since the contents of every single text was clearly imprinted in his mind.

Generally, Rav Dovid shied away from the limelight, and whenever he was asked how he was zoche to retain so much Torah, he would avoid offering any substantial response. In-

stead, he’d humbly invent a different excuse each time, negating his outstanding genius.

Yet here, in the Purim setting, nichnas yayin, yatza sod. There was no hiding the breadth and depth of Rav Dovid’s knowledge. His face shone as he joyously repeated one vort after the other, quoting a vast range of sources. His enthralled guests enjoyed every minute of the brilliant, captivating expose in the happy, uplifting atmosphere.

At one point, Rav Dovid began to speak of the prohibition of forgetting Torah, and the obligation upon every Yid to remember all that he learns so he can access it in a time of need.

Seeing that the Raavad was in such an open mood, one of the people at the table grabbed the opportunity. It was the perfect time to ask the question on everybody’s mind: “How does one do it? How can a person remember everything? It’s only natural to forget… How is it possible to retain everything one learns?”

Rav Dovid listened to the question. His face reddened as he stopped for a moment, immersed in holy thought. Then he abruptly jumped up, as if on fire. You could tell it was hard for him to get the words out, but nonetheless, he began to reveal his secret.

“It’s an explicit pasuk in the Torah! It says in Parshas Shelach, ‘V’lo sasuru acharei levavechem v’acharei eineichem… l’maan tizkeru! ’ If one guards his eyes and protects his heart’s thoughts in pure kedushah, he will remember everything he learns.

“The opposite is true as well. If the eyes and heart aren’t protected properly, and one allows all sorts of nonsense and worldly matters inside, there is no place left for Torah. That’s how you can have someone spend lots of time learning with it all getting

Whenever he was asked how he was zoche to retain so much Torah, he would avoid offering any substantial response. Instead, he’d humbly invent a different excuse

forgotten; since he has no space in his heart for the Torah to remain. He isn’t connected to his learning with true love, but rather, his heart is set on other things. Naturally, the Torah will trickle out…”

* * * * *

While learning, a talmid chacham in Yerushalayim came across a certain source that he wanted to verify. He saw a Midrash cited in some older seforim, but try as he might, he could not find its original source. He asked around and he researched, even consulting with the databases of seforim available today, but he could not find the Midrash.

One of his friends suggested that he go down to Bnei Brak to see Rav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l. Perhaps Rav Chaim would be able to direct him to the elusive source.

Arriving at 23 Rechov Rashbam, the yungerman waited his turn. Finally, he entered the room and posed his question to Rav Chaim.

“It’s in the Shir Hayichud that we say on Yom Kippur after Maariv,” was Rav Chaim’s instant reply. A Yom Kippur machzor was brought, and Rav Chaim opened to the holy words we say once a year. He pointed out the Midrash that appeared right there.

The yungerman knew his time with the gadol was up, but before he could leave the room so the next person could enter, he couldn’t contain his amazement and blurted out, “To know all of Shas Bavli and Yerushalmi, I could understand. But Shir Hayichud?! How does one reach the point of knowing and remembering even texts such as the Shir Hayichud by heart?”

Rav Chaim replied, “It all depends on what truly interests you. Perhaps some people find worldly matters interesting, and are curious to know everything about everything around them. But those things don’t interest me…

The beautiful chiddushim in Shir Hayichud — that interests me very much. And that’s why its words are deeply ingrained in my memory.”

* * * * *

The Torah tells us that by looking at the tzitzis, one is zoche to the ko’ach hazechirah — to remember all mitzvos and his Torah learning. But this is on condition of “lo sasuru.”

Rashi explains, based on the Midrash, that the heart and eyes are specifically highlighted here since they are like spies for the body. The eye sees, the heart desires, and then the rest of the body commits the aveirah. Thus, the heart and eyes are at fault when one veers from the proper path.

So long as one does not guard his heart and eyes as he should, he will not see hatzlacha in his Torah learning and mitzvos. Every time he wants to do a mitzvah, daven or learn, his eyes will pull up the thoughts and things he has seen, and create confusion. A person cannot reach shleimus in avodas Hashem unless he guards his heart and eyes.

The Sefer Chareidim gives an example. Imagine if a person gifts his friend with one thousand slaves. Later, he asks for a favor: “I’m short of help myself; please give me back two of the slaves.” Could the friend be so foolish as to refuse to return two out of a thousand?

Similarly, Hakadosh Baruch Hu gives each of us 248 limbs and 365 sinews as gifts to use. Then He asks us to give back two of these limbs — the heart and eyes. Hashem says, “If you dedicate your heart and eyes to Me, all your limbs will be protected.”

The mitzvah of tzitzis brings good memory, but as the Torah tells us, it’s all on condition that we watch over our hearts and eyes. The pasuk repeats “u’zechartem” and “l’maan tizkeru,” since we will certainly earn zechirah, but we can only achieve ultimate retention on condition that we keep our hearts and eyes pure.

Local Law Enforcement on Alert in Response to Middle East Situation

Acting out of an abundance of caution, local law enforcement is on heightened alert to ensure public safety even as rockets continue to fly between Iran and Israel in the Middle East.

Just hours after Israel unleashed a brutal attack on Iranian targets to prevent the completion of nuclear weapons, Mayor Eric Adams said that NYPD’s Counterterrorism unit was closely monitoring developments overseas. The mayor also noted that security would be stepped up at New York City’s houses of worship, and offered his personal prayers for peace in the Middle East.

Additional police protection was deployed in all five boroughs, with NYPD Chief Jessica Tisch saying that extra manpower would remain in place for a minimum of several days, reported NBC News.

In Albany, Governor Kathy Hochul said that while there were no credible threats to New York, law enforcement would be out in full force.

“As a precaution, we have increased security for sensitive locations and stepped up cybersecurity protections,” said Hochul. “My priority is keeping New Yorkers safe.”

As Primary Election Nears, Cuomo Nets More Endorsements

With primary day just days away and early voting already underway, former governor Andrew Cuomo has continued to collect endorsements from Jewish groups who see him as the best choice to appear on the Democratic ballot in the November general election.

Over the past week, Cuomo has racked up endorsements from the Sephardic Community Federation, both factions of Williamsburg’s Satmar community, and the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition. As previously reported in The Boro Park View, Bobov, Crown Heights Jewish United, the Crown Heights PAC, and the Far Rockaway Jewish Alliance all came out in support of Cuomo last week.

“Our Orthodox community has experienced trauma un-

like any other, from surging hate crimes and antisemitism to ... unspeakable targeted acts,” said Cuomo after receiving the FJCC endorsement. “With the most crucial election of our lifetimes, we need a proven leader who will not just pay lip service and talk about fighting antisemitism, but will actually do it.”

But perhaps most shocking was a late endorsement for Cuomo announced on June 16, coming from a coalition of 26 different Boro Park-based mosdos that had thrown its collective weight behind City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams just a week earlier. A Yiddish flyer from the group, which referred to itself as “Ichud Hakehilos V’hamosdos — Boro Park,” said that Cuomo had personally visited Boro Park and apologized for past errors. Signed by leaders of multiple mosdos including Bobov-45, Sanz Klausenberg, Satmar, Viznitz, Sanz, Vien, Lelov, Skver, Pupa and others, the flyer emphasized the importance of voting for Cuomo to prevent “sonei Yisroel” from taking over Gracie Mansion, putting Adams as its second ranked choice and Zellnor Myrie third.

Many in the Jewish community continue to be angry with Cuomo over his COVID-era red zones that targeted New York’s Orthodox residents. But with opponents Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander making clear their leftist views, community members who are registered as Democrats are being urged to make their voices heard at the polls.

“It is clear that communities that vote are communities that are heard, and politicians look clearly at who is voting,” said Rabbi Yeruchim Silber, director of New York government relations at Agudath Israel of America, adding, “As a community, our ability to be answered is directly tied to our voting power. And so, we implore you to make sure you are registered to vote, and vote.”

New Intersection Design On the Way To Promote Pedestrian and Biker Safety

Safer intersections are about to become a reality for Brooklyn’s greater Jewish community, with the New York City Department of Transportation announcing the start of a project that aims to reduce crashes by promoting greater visibility.

DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez shared news of the new design being implemented at intersections that have high

crash rates. The plan uses a concept known as hardened daylighting, which uses design elements including planters, barriers, granite blocks and other items to replace existing parking spots. With nearly half of New York City’s traffic fatalities occurring at intersections, hardened daylighting is an idea whose time has come, said Rodriguez.

“Using barriers to clear space at the intersection will help ensure pedestrians, cyclists and turning vehicles can see each other and enhance safety,” noted Rodriguez.

While the DOT is currently focusing on which locations would be best served by the concept, plans are already underway to install hardened daylighting at the intersections of Ocean Avenue at Church Avenue, Avenue J, Cortelyou Road, and Foster Avenue; Avenue J at Bedford Avenue; and Rugby Road and Foster Avenue.

According to a January 2025 study published by the DOT, hardened daylighting reduced injuries by 0.14 percent each year at each intersection where it was installed.

Grassroots Effort

Succeeds in Enhancing Safety at Troubled Intersection

A traffic-prone intersection in southern Boro Park is about to become a little safer, with the New York City Department of Transportation announcing that it would be installing a four-way stop sign at the corner of 61st Street and 21st Avenue.

BoroPark24 has been in close contact with elected officials regarding the busy intersection, which has been plagued by numerous accidents. The website praised the city for taking action to promote safety, but made it clear in a June 11th post that it hopes to see further action at the intersection.

“While the new four-way stop sign is a meaningful step forward, the ultimate goal remains the installation of a full traffic light to ensure maximum safety. This is something the community fought for, and now some improvement is happening — one step closer to safer streets.”

Assisted Suicide One Step Closer to Reality in NY

A bill that would allow terminally ill patients to receive life-ending drugs has made its way to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk after passing both houses of the New York State Legislature last week.

After being passed previously by the Assembly, the proposal cleared the Senate on June 9 by a margin of 35 to 27, following hours of heated debate. Under the bill, those with incurable illnesses would have to have their requests for fatal drugs approved by two doctors. Patients would be required to make both oral and written requests for lethal medications, which they would administer on their own.

Senate sponsor Brad Holyman argued that the law was “not about hastening death, but ending suffering.”

Those words fell flat for Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who issued a statement last month describing the legislation as “disgusting,” and calling it “a shameful attack on the sanctity of life.”

“Instead of investing in palliative care, mental health support and lifeaffirming resources for those facing terminal illness, this legislation offers an immoral shortcut that devalues human life,” said Stefanik. “It sends a chilling message to our seniors and disabled communities that their lives are expendable.”

A strongly worded statement released by Agudath Israel of America, whose Chayim Aruchim division has been advocating for terminally ill patients for more than a decade, urged Hochul to veto the bill. It noted that Chayim Aruchim has seen many cases of patients who were described as terminally ill by their physicians defying those prognoses, and going on to live happy and productive lives.

“Since time immemorial, civilized societies have drawn a hard line on the issue of suicide,” said Agudah executive vice president Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel. “Taking one’s own life is a tragedy of untold proportions. Allowing physicians — whose calling is to heal — to serve as active accomplices in bringing about this tragedy of taking human life is a profound moral and practical misstep.”

What school break was meant for Monday and Tuesday June 22, 23 from 10 - 1:30

Kaily glanced at the decorative marble clock on the bathroom vanity. She had exactly half an hour to get herself dressed for a shidduch and out of the house without anyone finding out where she was going.

As she struggled to dress quickly and silently, she imagined Fruma Esther cackling, I got that woman! I got her! She’s hiding in a two-foot vanity along with the contents of her entire closet!

Kaily looked at the pile of clothes, shoes, accessories and cosmetics strewn around the tiny bathroom. Where could she hide the evidence? If she kept going in and out of the bedroom to get things and put them back, her mother would become suspicious. She’d just dump it all in the bathtub, pull the shower curtain closed and escape before Eli showed up. Tomorrow she would take care of the mess. And of the million other things she’d been pushing off this week.

She hadn’t accomplished much of anything these past few days. The wedding was a bit more than a month away, and the invitation list languished, mostly incomplete, on the computer. She hadn’t even written a card for Bina to go

along with the evening bag.

She also hadn’t bought herself a single new outfit for the simcha. But she couldn’t do that herself. She needed Perela’s expertise, and with Perela missing in action, she would have to make do with whatever she already had… which was, right now, piled in the bathtub.

Not very impressive.

Sruly was coming home for Shabbos, and he would be staying until the wedding. She had to make the extra room in the house presentable for him, especially since his childhood home no longer existed.

Tomorrow. Tomorrow, her life would resume.

For now, she was down to 20 minutes until she had to leave.

Whoever said that worrying was a waste of time never experienced a good worrying session. See? All this worrying had totally paid off.

Miraculously, so many of the technical logistics surrounding this shidduch had melted away. For one, her mother had been extremely tired all day and kept begging to go to sleep. Kaily had been able to transport her belongings to the vanity without her mother around. But then again, why was her mother so tired? Should she worry?

Tomorrow. After all this craziness was over, she would take her to the doctor.

Then Eli had called to say that he had lots of typing work to do and maybe she wanted the night off. “Without Perela doing Wednesdays, you’ve been locked inside.” chapter THIRTY-FOUR

In China, Perela becomes fed up with Tziri on Shabbos.

THE STRANGLED CRY FLOODED THE HOUSE. HER MOTHER! KAILY’S BLOOD FROZE

It was almost too good to be true. When had he last cared about the fact that she was basically under house arrest?

Kaily tried not to think too much as she applied makeup. She looked in the mirror. She still looked like she was almost 50.

More than two decades ago, she’d stood at this same vanity, feet dancing over the same blue flower tiles, blow-drying her hair before meeting Naftali for the first time. She hadn’t needed too much makeup with the natural, starry-eyed glow.

Ten more minutes.

Next, her sheitel

She combed through the beach waves with her fingers. Then, she gently parted it off-center. She looked in the mirror. Despite herself, she smiled.

She didn’t look young, but she definitely looked like she was going somewhere special.

And maybe… just maybe… just a tiny, miniscule maybe... he would actually be… nice?

Kaily scrutinized her reflection. The outfit was too plain. Her sweater needed something, and she knew exactly what: That pretty diamond necklace her mother had gotten Bina.

Oh well.

She clasped one fake diamond earring onto her right ear. Was she humming? Kaily Newman — there was something nice about that name. Definitely nicer than KailyNo-Last-Name.

Five minutes left.

“Nooo!”

The strangled cry flooded the house. Her mother! Kaily’s blood froze. Instantly came the awful, dreadful noise of something moving and then falling…

Silence.

Kaily ran. In one hand, she held her second earring, and with her other hand she grabbed her phone

and dialed Hatzolah.

Her mother’s bedroom door was locked. Kaily instinctively stretched her hand to the top of the doorframe. No key there. She ran around the house in frantic circles, looking for a key. She finally located one in the overstuffed junk drawer.

With clumsy, desperate movements, she opened the bedroom door.

Her mother lay still on the floor. Kaily knelt beside her.

“Maaa!” she screamed when she saw her mother’s closed eyes. “MA! Are you alive?!”

The room looked like a war zone. The rocking chair had been schlepped next to the armoire, whose doors hung wide open.

Had her mother tried standing up on a rocking chair?!

What in the world?

Her dressy skirt was getting in her way. Kaily put her ear to her mother’s nose and quickly touched her wrist. Her mother was breathing and there was a pulse. Then she noticed a bump on her mother’s forehead that grew larger as the seconds passed.

* * * * *

Eli showed up right on time.

Kaily spotted him as she followed the Hatzolah personnel out of the house behind the stretcher. His face was a horrified mix of shock and fear.

“Eli, it’s Ma,” Kaily said unnecessarily. “She’s still unconscious. I thought she was sleeping, but apparently she got up and fell and hit her head. Look at her, I think she’s dying.”

She tripped over her words in an effort to get him to understand. To realize what was happening.

“She’s not dying,” one of the Hatzolah members said. He opened the doors of the truck. “She’s breathing on her own, mostly. We hooked her

up to oxygen to make it easier for her.”

“Slow down,” Eli said. He was holding his laptop case and three seforim he probably needed for this project. “I’ll drop this stuff in the car and be right back.”

Kaily accompanied her mother to the back of the ambulance, and Eli took the front passenger seat. She watched as the members secured the gurney to the truck. Two members joined her in the back to keep an eye on her mother.

Her knees gave way, and she melted weakly into the seat. The truck jerked, and she bounced along, sirens blaring overhead. One of the guys looked at her worriedly.

“Are you okay? Can I get you a drink?”

She shook her head. Her mind rebelled. How could her mother be heading to the hospital in an ambulance? How was that fair? After so many months of therapy, rehab and healing, she seemed to be in worse shape than ever.

The member produced a water bottle and a cup and handed it to her.

“Drink. Trauma can make you feel faint.”

Kaily drank. She observed the members checking her mother’s vitals.

“Ma…” she whispered gently. But her mother’s eyes remained closed.

Distantly, she heard her phone ring. Right, she should be calling Yiddy. Who else should she be calling? It was too late at night to wake Shalom in Eretz Yisroel. Perela? When was she landing? Tonight? Early tomorrow morning?

She answered her phone. It was Eli from the front seat.

He cleared his throat delicately. “Uh, Kaily… didn’t you, uh, have somewhere to go tonight? Maybe I’ll stay with Ma and you should go back home. They can drop you off

somewhere along the way.”

“Oh no!” she whispered into the phone. “What am I going to do?!” But then she remembered who she was talking to. “Never mind. I’m coming. That… wasn’t important.”

She hung up and laughed harshly. The EMTs looked at her oddly.

What a fool she had been! To dream!

Forty minutes ago, a thousand years ago, she had been applying makeup.

And exactly at this moment, Mordechai Newman was waiting for her.

This was her punishment. For not recognizing how fortunate she was to care for her mother. Kaily wanted to bury her head in her hands and weep. Instead, she called Fruma Esther Jaraslowitz.

Fruma Esther answered on the first ring. Her tone was a curious mixture of exasperation and surprise. “Kaily? You shouldn’t be calling me now! You should be in the middle of introducing yourself to that nice man I set you up with!”

“Uh, actually, that’s why I’m calling.” She lowered her voice. This was not a conversation she relished people listening to.

“I’m sitting in an ambulance.” She hoped this was enough to shock the shadchan.

“You’re what?! ”

Kaily didn’t bother repeating herself.

“Tell me you’re lying.”

“I wish I were,” Kaily said. “As I was leaving, my mother fell and hit her head.”

“B-but… the shidduch,” Fruma Esther sputtered. “He drove all the way from Staten Island to meet you. What am I going to do now?”

Kaily felt bad for her. She really did.

“Can’t you figure it out? He’s flying off tomorrow.”

“Look. Apologize on my behalf. And I’m really sorry for this mess. But I think it’s better this way,” Kaily admitted around the lump in her throat. “I’m obviously not really available… At least I didn’t mislead him.”

2025 Summer

The emotional bond between people and animals has been widely studied across psychology, medicine and veterinary science, with research pointing to its inordinate benefits.

Goldie Brunner, owner of Animal Interactions, a therapeutic farm currently located in West Nyack, New York, sees those benefits up close in her work on — and off — the farm, where people of all ages get to interact with animals.

“It does something for everyone who comes into contact with the animals,” Goldie says. “Being with the animals in their enclosures, both holding and handling them, can build confidence, encourage relationships and help with sensory needs. The con-

centrated environment enables people to be calm, grounded and present.”

Everyone stands to gain from these things, all the more so people struggling emotionally or from trauma, or children with special needs.

“Animals are unconditionally loving. They don’t judge anyone, regardless of what they look like,” Goldie says, but there’s more to it, especially in terms of the animals at her farm.

These hundred-plus animals — the ponies, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, snakes, tortoises and more — are unlike animals in the wild or at other farms: They’re trained to be part of a therapeutic setting. Gentle human interaction is part of their daily routine. Staff at the farm won’t just clean cages, they’ll sit the animals on their laps, pet them and brush their hair. With consistent positive reinforcement, the animals become used to gentle touch, their defenses go down, and they’re gentle in return.

“Our animals are trained with love, and therefore learn to love in return,” Goldie says. “The animals are happy to have visitors; they’ll come over to you and rub against you waiting for a scratch. We always ensure that interactions are positive in our guided tours open to the public.”

Furry, Friendly Therapy

Animals come to the farm from many backgrounds. A lot of them are rescues from people who no longer want a pet, and many come from owners who didn’t know how to properly care for them.

“Rabbits, birds and even snakes are among the animals commonly purchased as pets for children who sometimes neglect them, or just quickly lose interest,” says Goldie. “These pets are not taught love and

are often very distrusting of people. They require lots of love and time until they’re ready to join our program.”

Under the right care, though, the animals respond just fine when Goldie and the team take the show on the road and bring them to people in need of an animal’s touch.

Animals can be used to help people reach therapeutic goals. The Animal Interactions team works with social workers and mental health professionals who incorporate animals into therapy sessions. For people with trauma, who are hypervigilant, anxious or shut down, having an animal in the session can help regulate the nervous system and make the experience more calming and supportive.

“Animals are in your face, with no concept of personal space,” Goldie says, “so someone could focus on a rabbit or

rooster, and talk around them, in a way that feels less direct or scary. Plus, it keeps people grounded in the now, so they know they’re not back in their trauma.”

Animals are used in physical therapy, too. “When someone is, say, learning to walk again after an accident, the therapy is grueling, difficult and demoralizing. Think how that can change when you bring a goat into the session, to walk beside the person, to motivate them. It becomes almost fun.”

Animal Interactions even works with nursing homes, where each resident will get an animal placed in their lap for them to pet and play with as part of a guided session. They work with school groups and camps, too.

The Animal Connection

Out in the world, especially in the frum population who have little exposure to animals, there’s often quite a lot of initial fear and resistance.

“It’s not so much the animals they fear — although it is that for some people. For most, it’s the unknown,” Goldie says. “But it’s a beautiful experience to watch people learn, and come to love, or at least like, the animals, and enjoy the niflaos haBorei. When we visit camps that we’ve been visiting for a decade-plus, the campers know some animals by name and are so excited to meet them again. For new camps or the youngest bunk, we start by introducing them to a small animal such as a baby chick, and teaching them about the animal. Once one brave child pets it, everyone follows.

“Sometimes I’ll go into a classroom, and kids will panic when they see the animals. That’s when I’ll pull out a stuffed animal and say, ‘This one doesn’t move, but it’s also not real. If you want a real bunny, it moves, it breathes, and you need to be careful with it.’”

Giving children an understanding of the animals as living things with feelings is the way to go. “It’s not about scaring them into behaving with the animals,” Goldie says. “I hate when teachers say to kids, ‘Sit down or you’ll have to leave the classroom.’ If we explain it, they’re sure to cooperate. I tell them, ‘Rabbits are animals of prey, they’re scared of predators, so let’s keep quiet and calm.’ That works like a charm.”

Goldie has many beautiful stories of kids getting over their initial fear and forming that connection with an animal. There was a class Goldie worked with several times where there was a specific kid who just couldn’t get a grip on himself. She tried to talk him through it, but he became dysregulated and had to leave the room so the session could go on for the other kids.

A couple of weeks later, Goldie came back, and the class was quiet and calm. She forgot to check for that kid.

“Suddenly, I realized that he was the one holding the rabbit, stroking it, the two of them in their own world. The teacher and I, we just looked at each other in disbelief and joy.”

In another session with a special needs group, one not-quite-verbal kid immediately said, “No, no, no,” when Goldie came in with some snakes. He stationed himself at the door, but as the session got underway, he slowly advanced inside. Goldie thought he might be ready and gently placed a snake over his neck.

Creature Comforts

“Special needs kids particularly love making eye contact with animals. It’s their point of connection with another living being,” Goldie explains. “This kid was just staring into the snake’s eye, maintaining contact. The snake was flicking its tongue at him, and the boy was in raptures. He didn’t want to let me take the snake back. He’d connected with the animal, and really, this is what it’s all about — connection.”

A Higher Calling

Goldie is a mommy and long-time Monsey resident. She’s absolutely part of the heimish community, yet her work is so unusual.

“I don’t come from a family of animal lovers,” she says, “but I’ve been drawn to animals from a young age. When I was a kid and my mother would take me to the park, I was always petting dogs and talking to their owners. Time and again, my mother would ask me, ‘Why can’t you just ride your bike?’”

Goldie volunteered with other petting zoos and farms, and she found that something about the environment, and the animals themselves, made kids open up.

“I remember a kid telling me that it was hard for her at home, but she feels better when she’s with the bunnies,” Goldie says. “I told her that they make me feel better, too, and we had this instant connection. It’s like she felt she could trust me because we shared a love and understanding for the animals.”

Seeing that emotional impact as a

teen, and knowing that there was just not enough access in the frum world to something that could really make a difference to people, made Goldie get to work. With a college degree and an additional certification in Animal Assisted Therapy, she started Animal Interactions to give individuals the opportunity to interact with animals in a unique, hands-on, therapeutic way.

A Learning Experience

“I learned many things during my training,” Goldie says. “First, a skillset in how to deal with animals, what they can handle, and how to keep them feeling safe and secure. People are often focused on how to get the kid to be okay with the animal, but I also need to ensure that the animal is okay with

Creature Comforts

the kid! For example, animals can never be dangled as they’re being handed over to someone else. They need to be supported gently from my arm to theirs.”

Goldie also learned about animal behaviors, responses and patterns. Animals are mostly protective beings, sometimes aggressively so when they perceive threat: males to females, mothers to young.

“Whether you believe that animals have emotions, or you want to call it animal instinct, these are living beings, and they feel things and act accordingly. I had to learn to work with that. Still, when it comes to animals, experience is everything,” Goldie asserts. “Science says snakes are solitary animals with little to no social bonding, and males are not known to be protective over females. But we had a snake here, and we learned the hard way about how protective he was to the female snake in his cage. If you took the female out first, and then stuck in your hand to get him, he bit. We learnt from painful experience that it has to be first him, and then her.”

The training also included medical and veterinary care. “In our place, we form bonds with the animals and provide medical care as far as we’re able to. In fact, on our farm, every animal has a name!”

That’s one hundred names and counting! The livestock and rabbit names mostly follow a flower theme, and the birds’ names are inspired by the elements, with names like Ocean, Rainbow and Skye.

“We’ve long covered the basics like Daisy, Lily and Rose, and I’m often looking up obscure flower species to find

names,” Goldie says. “Clients love to be part of the naming process. Whenever we add a new animal to our family, clients get involved, coming up with names for them.”

On Staff

At Animal Interactions, the staff helps care for the animals by feeding them, grooming them (such as by cutting their nails), cleaning their enclosures and providing handson interactive farm tours. Many animal-loving volunteers come to help with these tasks as well!

Most of the staff is frum, and so are the volunteers, though there are some non-Jewish staff. A farm is a 24/7 operation, and the animals need care on Shabbos and Yom Tov as well.

“Some of the staff came to us with backgrounds in working with animals,” Goldie says. “Others have zero background but are just called to this work. It’s very hands-on, you can see quickly if someone has the potential and personality for this field. Once that’s clear, the rest is mainly in the training; new people will follow me around for months. There are all sorts of skills involved, not just in handling the animals, but also in leading groups, for instance.

“During their supervisory period is where I get to see them at work and get my nachas,” Goldie reflects. “For the team, the clients and everyone involved — it’s really lifechanging.”

Animals. The word evokes shivers of fear — or squeals of delight.

As a mother, I am strictly in the “no animals allowed” camp, and my children all seem to have absorbed my aversion to creatures of all kinds. In our house, spiders, fruit flies, and gnats are all squished and killed by helpful bachurim and sometimes even Chaverim members. I may even be guilty of having called an uncle or two over to battle a water bug when my husband wasn’t around.

So, with a shaking pen and quivering heart, I approached the question of why — and how — people actually choose to bring a pet or animal into their homes and lives, hoping their bunnies and birds wouldn’t bite over the phone wire.

In the end, the animals in question sounded rather harmless — almost cute. Their stories won me over. (Well, almost.)

Fluffy Friends

Their pets, they were all quick to correct me, are not actually “animals.” They’re friends.

Frimy grew up in a home where pets were a part of the summer pilgrimage to the country. Her father was fascinated by animals, and he regularly had some sort of furry friend with him upstate, either on loan from a local farmer or purchased from a pet shop.

“We had chicks, goats, even a cow

one summer. We loved it.” Nature and nurture combined led Frimy to look into animal friends for her own daughter.

“Oreo is an afikomen present,” Frimy shares about her daughter’s bunny.

Nine-year-old Goldie had been pining for a pet. But Frimy’s husband, who hadn’t grown up with a chick or cow in the background, wasn’t very keen on noisy, messy, furry friends joining the family. “But for afikomen? Well, that just proves what lengths we go for our children!” They chose the name Oreo based on the rabbit’s grayand-white coloring.

Interestingly, when I asked the Rosen family, who are the owners of a pair of bunnies, what their names are, I discovered that Oreo is a popular choice for a bunny. The Rosens’ second bunny is named Ginger, for her ginger coloring. And yes, each has its unique personality. The Rosens’ Oreo is playful and curious — maybe too curious — running out of the playroom every time the door is opened or a back is turned, while Ginger is more cautious and needs coaching to come out of her corner.

Cultivating a Coop

There are many things to consider before purchasing or assuming the care of a pet, including the price of their upkeep. Leah Lebowitz, a mother and grandmother who has owned many parakeets over the years, shares an interesting anecdote.

“When it was time for us to downsize and we were giving away some of our many birds, we reached out to a Jewish person who worked at a farm. He told us that he had a potential customer who really wanted parakeets but couldn’t afford them. He was excited to reach out and offer her two of our parakeets for free!”

The Rosens also mention that they researched different breeds of bunnies before they bought the ones they currently have.

“Our first bunny had been a free giveaway from a farm, and we were excited to give it a try. But we gave it independence in our yard, and one day it dug its way out of our backyard, under the fence we had put up. We were devastated. Now, when we surprised our siblings with new bunnies, we did extensive research as to which bunny type would be easy to care for, and we bought two female bunnies to keep each other company.”

Birds, Mrs. Lebowitz explains, can be a one-time investment. “If you know how to care for them and how to make them comfortable in their environment, the parakeets can lay eggs and help grow your collection.”

However, it’s not always so simple. The Lebowitzes already had two parakeets when they saw an advertisement for a giveaway of a large family of parakeets. “We figured it would be

great to get several more parakeets to keep our current ones company.” Well, it was naive thinking. The new parakeets didn’t quite get along with the old ones right away. There were turf fights, and the large family would turn their noses up at their new friends.

But after they acclimated, they took to each other to the point of excluding the Lebowitzes.

“Once the large parakeet family made friends with the old birds,” Mrs. Lebowitz recalls, “they didn’t need us much. They had their own company. We would sit near their cage, and they would ignore us. My children would try to catch their attention, but the birds just minded their own business.”

And then there are chicks.

Ari Muller has been familiar with animals his entire life. As the brother of Frimy (which makes him Bunny Oreo #1’s uncle), his childhood memories also include summers with chickens, goats, cows and other farm animals. Presently, he raises goats in his backyard, and he also has an active chicken coop with hens and roosters, depending on the season. Some eggs are collected by the family and eaten, and some are left to hatch.

Chickies, unlike their friendly connotations and the cute illustrations they star in, are anything but. Bunnies connect to their owners, parakeets tweet and ask for attention, and even goats are happy to see their food provider. But chicks pretty much ignore their human caretakers. They stick to their own flock, assert their position within the clutch, and crowd around the chicken feed and water.

Food for Thought

Animals come with many responsibilities — and halachos. The most common concern is their food. The Torah commands us to feed our animals before we eat. In the Rosner family, their son Yiddy is the one in charge of feeding the bunnies. At times, he’s had to call home from yeshiva to ask his mother to feed the animals for him — he was hungry and not allowed to eat, since he’d forgotten to feed his pets.

Goldie is very busy with her darling Oreo, and has rarely forgotten to feed him.

The parakeets, Mrs. Lebowitz tells us, make a big mess and noise out of their meals. You can leave feed for them in the designated spot, but when they peck and eat, lots of the chaff and seeds fall all around the cage. If there were to be no food, they would probably make a racket, calling for their meals.

Ari Muller, of goat and chicken fame, says that the easiest pet to care for is… drumroll… goldfish!

“People don’t know this,” he says, “but most goldfish die from overeating. We tend to overfeed our fish, and since they don’t have the brains to stop eating when they’re full, they will eat all the food in the bowl, and it kills them. Betta fish are another easy catch. They are a cheap buy at the pet shop, and unlike most animals, they do not need company; a betta fish can live alone in a tank easily for years!”

A Pesach Diet

Pesach poses halachic concerns for animal owners as well.

Most animal feed is chometz. Although bunnies and goats will eat hay, they also need their specific pet food for health purposes.

“There is one type of bird food that isn’t chometz,” Mrs. Lebowitz shares, “but it isn’t nutritious food; it is a treat, a sort of ‘candy’ for birds. And after eight days of only candy, the parakeets weren’t acting their best, to say the least.”

Sure enough, on Mrs. Lebowitz’s Motzei Pesach grocery trip, pet food was on top of their list.

Frimy says that they switched to a kitniyos bunny food for Pesach, instead of the regular feed that contains chometz.

There was also a special kosher l’Pesach run of goat food by West Maple Farm in Monsey, which came in handy for the Mullers. And here I thought that making heimish meringues for Pesach was a big deal!

A Class of Their Own

Do pets ever bite?

“No.” The Rosens are confident about this. “We love our bunnies, and they won’t bite us, because they’re our friends.”

The Rosens can easily identify different “bunny feelings” according to the behavior of their pets. Their bunnies twitch their ears a certain way when they’re content, they stomp their back feet when they feel threatened, and when they’re in a really good mood, they do a “binky” jump, which is a kind of midair twirl.

Goldie feels the same way. She’s Oreo’s best friend; why would the bunny want to bite her? She senses that the rabbit recognizes her, and lets the neighbors come look at her. Parakeets

can bite if they feel threatened, but they usually don’t.

And goats? Ari Muller says that goats don’t bite — they can’t. They don’t have upper teeth in the front of their mouth. Goats are kosher animals, and this is one of their simanim; they regurgitate their food because they can’t chew it well enough the first time as they don’t have good biting teeth.

Mrs. Lebowitz tells us about one particular parakeet she got from someone else.

“My children called her Mrs. Keet. She wasn’t a biter, per se, but she was always irritable, fighting with the other parakeets, and would not calm down. After quite a bit of time, we realized it would be best for the other parakeets if we just let her go. We took her out of the cage one day, and opened the window. We never saw Mrs. Keet again, and, truthfully, we didn’t miss her.”

All this talk of personality in animals overwhelms me. It’s enough that I need to deal with the emotions of the people around me; would I be able to handle chicken tantrums and bunny neediness? Apparently not, and so I remain in my animal-free home for now.

But that’s not to say I don’t find animals fascinating. With their survival instincts and unique abilities, it’s difficult not to marvel at Hashem’s wonderful creations, and at the humans who devote themselves so completely to the animals in their care.

Experiencing pain didn’t just make you a survivor. It left you wiser, stronger, and ready to guide others.

Walk down the refrigerator aisle of your local kosher grocery, and you’ll see an extensive variety of cheeses and dairy products. Today’s shoppers and cooks take for granted the ability to pick and choose from the many variations to create milichig meals or treats using cholov Yisroel products. But it wasn’t always that way.

In 1939, the Tzelemer Rebbe, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Grunwald, zt”l, arrived in New York. Now a stronghold of frumkeit and Torah life, then New York was a desert in terms of Yiddishkeit, particularly in the area of kosher food. The Tzelemer was shocked at the lack of available kosher food products. A huge talmid chacham who devoted his days to learning and writing seforim, he realized that without the availability of strictly kosher food, it would be impossible to raise true ehrliche families in New York.

Rabbi Grunwald was particularly disturbed that the Jewish community had no place to buy cholov Yisroel milk. Cholov Yisroel requires that a Yid be present at the milking to confirm that the milk is from a kosher animal (a cow) and that no other substance is introduced into the milk.

At the time, people relied on the occasional USDA inspections to ensure that only cow’s milk was used. Faced with this unfortunate reality, Rabbi Grunwald undertook to provide the frum community with cholov Yisroel milk, and undertook as well the task of producing glatt kosher meat in America.

In the Beginning

With the communal affluence common today, it’s difficult for us to picture the hardships of those times. The Yidden of the late 1800s and early 1900s who arrived in America often felt the need to choose either a life of Yiddishkeit and crushing poverty, or a life of economic security, without Yiddishkeit. Tragically, many lost the Yiddishkeit they had originally come to America to preserve. Sometimes, probably out of a sense of guilt, such Jews looked down on the greenhorns who arrived later in the 1940s. They resented the Yidden who wanted to hold onto kashrus and Shabbos and did not make matters easy for them.

This was the state of affairs when the Tzelemer Rebbe began visiting milk farms in an attempt to establish the presence of a frum mashgiach who would oversee the milking, which took place twice daily, in the pre-dawn and afternoon hours. He wasn’t warmly welcomed; some dairy producers were so incensed at the thought of involving a religious Jew in their affairs that they went out of their way to humiliate him. Once, when he visited a dairy farm, the workers took a cow to a nearby stream, where they told the Rebbe, “You want kosher milk? We toiveled the cow for you!”

The Rebbe didn’t let this attitude stop him. He signed a contract with Wortman Dairy Farms in Brooklyn, creating Kahal Milk, named after Kahal Arugath Habosem. It was the very first kosher milk produced commercially in the U.S. In addition, Kahal Milk was the first kosher milk to be produced in milk containers; previously, all milk was bottled in glass bottles that were delivered by the milkman to individual homes or grocery stores. The empty milk bottles were then returned and had to be washed and sanitized by the bottler. This was a difficult process for the housewife, the grocer and the milk producer. With the introduction of a kosher milk container (existing milk containers at the time were coated with a nonkosher wax), Kahal milk could now be sold in grocery stores — an enormous advance for the kosher consumer.

Finally, in 1940, two brothers formed the J&J company, which with Rabbi Grunwald’s supervision became the predominant dairy company at the time. J&J produced cholov Yisroel dairy products like cream cheese and butter, as well.

The MashgiachMidnight

Rabbi Grunwald took his supervision very seriously and expended enormous effort to ensure that the new and

unfamiliar processes were enforced. A nephew of the Rebbe, Reb Shia Grunwald, recalls that after the Tzelemer Rebbe’s wife, Rebbetzin Silka, was nifteres, he slept in the house so the Rebbe would not be alone at night. One night, the Tzelemer Rebbe woke him at 2:30 a.m. and asked him to find a taxi.

“I would like to drive out to the farm,” the Rebbe said. “Make sure it is a gentile driver.”

Reb Shia recalls: “I asked him, ‘Why a gentile driver?’

He said, ‘If we get a Jewish driver, the driver might call the mashgiach and tell him we are on our way. I want to make a surprise visit to make sure the mashgiach is there and doing his job.’

“We found a taxi and got to the farm in good time. The mashgiach was there, just as he should have been. The next night, I went to sleep, and once again, Rabbi Grunwald gently woke me at 2:30 a.m. I blinked up at him and asked, ‘What happened? Where are we going this time?’ He told me, ‘I want you to call a taxi with a gentile driver. We’re going out to the farm.’ I said, ‘Again? We were just there last night!’ He said, ‘Yes, that is precisely why I’d like to go tonight. No one will expect to see us there again so soon, and now we’ll see if the mashgiach is doing his job properly.’”

The determination and commitment of the Tzelemer Rebbe to the cholov Yisoel cause eventually spawned the production and expansion of kosher products in every category. It was his efforts that gave Yiddishe mothers the ability to feed their growing families with completely kosher products, and enabled the expanding Yiddishe community to enjoy a broad range of food products, without compromising an iota on kashrus, until today.

NAME AND LOGO

What does “IKEA” stand for? No, it’s not Swedish for “good luck with the allen key”; it’s actually an acronym. Ingvar Kamprad, the founder, combined his initials with those of his family farm Elmtaryd and his hometown Agunnaryd.

The bold blue-and-yellow logo is a clear tribute to the Swedish flag, but long-suffering husbands know that the famous logo really means, “You’re leaving with candles, whether you meant to or not.” (FYI, in Swedish, the company name is pronounced “ee-KAY-ah”.)

BACKSTORY

Founded in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA grew from a rural Sweden store into a maze-filled, home-furnishing juggernaut operating in countries all over the world. Kamprad, notoriously thrifty, reportedly flew economy and drove a 20-year-old Volvo even as a billionaire.

IKEA doesn’t just slap random names on its products; there’s a whole system. Rugs are often named after Danish towns, dining tables after places in Finland, children’s items after birds and animals, and garden furniture after Scandinavian islands. So, while “POÄNG” may sound like a sneeze, it’s actually the Swedish word for “point.” And somewhere out there, a very confused town might share its name with a dish rack.

It might be the global emperor of flat-pack furniture, but did you know that IKEA also owns more wind turbines than stores? That’s right — over 570 turbines versus around 460 stores worldwide. Sustainability isn’t just a marketing line for IKEA; they’ve invested billions to become climate-positive by 2030, including growing over 250,000 hectares of forests in places like Romania and the U.S.

So next time you’re wrestling with a BILLY bookcase, take comfort in knowing you’re doing your part for the planet, one allen key at a time.

YAHRTZEIT OF THE KOSSOVER REBBE, RAV SHRAGA FEIVISH HAGER

24 SIVAN (1958–2024)

This week we mark the first yahrtzeit of the Kossover Rebbe, Rav Shraga Feivish Hager, zt”l, a quiet but powerful gadol whose sincerity, depth and humility left a lasting impression on all who encountered him. He was a posek, mashpia and guide to many, drawing people close with his authenticity and his devotion to the inner world of Torah.

Born in Boro Park in 1958, he was the son of the Kossov-Zalishchik Rebbe, Rav Avraham Yehoshua Heshel Hager, zt”l. He learned in Be’er Shmuel in Brooklyn before moving to Bnei Brak, where he learned in Ponevezh and Chachmei Lublin and became close to Rav Shmuel Wosner, zt”l, whose granddaughter he married. The couple lived near Rav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l, and Rav Shraga Feivish also formed a close bond with the Yeshuos Moshe of Viznitz.

After returning to America, he was appointed rav and dayan of the Viznitz community in Boro Park in 1991, and later succeeded his father as Kossover Rebbe in 1999. He became known for his dedication to halacha, his willingness to address complex contemporary issues, and his unwavering leadership during challenging times.

OVERVIEW COUNTER

Though his following grew, he refused to have official gabbaim, and he was always personally available to those seeking a psak or eitzah

Each summer, the Rebbe would travel to Eretz Yisroel, where he would spend long nights at the Kosel, seated by his shtender, immersed in sifrei kabbalah and silent dveikus. He often journeyed to Meron, where he would daven at the kever of Rashbi with extraordinary focus and emotion, sometimes alone for hours. These visits were central to his spiritual life and reflected his bond with the world of penimius haTorah

What’s the most difficult — and most rewarding — part of running Premium Awnings?

The hardest part is walking the tightrope between perfection and reality. Every job is fully custom — there’s no “standard.” We take pride in tailoring each one to fit our customer’s individual needs. It’s challenging, but also rewarding.

As for the best part? That’s easy: watching families truly enjoy their outdoor spaces. Whether it’s a backyard, porch or sukkah, it never gets old. In terms of sukkahs, we’ve seen families go from dragging boards up five flights of stairs and scrambling on Erev Yom Tov to standing back and watching their Premium Awnings Sukkah pop open in minutes. That transformation is incredibly rewarding.

What is something you can’t live without?

Our team. From the first sketch to the final bolt, it’s their care, skill and pride that make Premium Awnings what it is. That, and a very long measuring tape!

Have there been any flops along the way?

In a complex where all the porches looked identical, we once measured — and built — an awning for the wrong unit. Another time, we installed a full sukkah on the neighbor’s porch. Let’s just say it made for some very interesting phone calls!

What’s the most interesting or extravagant job you’ve done?

We once created a multi-level custom awning and sukkah project with printed sukkah walls for a client in the mountains. Between the intricate design, engineering and logistics, it felt more like an art installation than an awning and sukkah installation.

Can you share any memorable stories?

A customer called us years after their installation to say how much their sukkah meant to them. The space had become the heart of every family simcha — from sheva brachos to vachnachts. “It’s our fastest home extension,” he said with a laugh. “We zip it up, and it just brings everyone together.” That’s the kind of feedback that reminds us why we love what we do.

What’s flying off your shelves these days?

Two things: our manual roll-up awnings and our roll-down sukkah shades. Both are simple, sturdy and super practical. The awnings offer effortless shade, no flapping tarps or complicated setups, and the sukkah shades are total game-changers. They are quick to install, and create a sealed, weather-resistant space — without the need to wrestle with heavy boards.

Tell us something that might surprise our readers.

Our “Sukkos season” kicks off in March! By the time Elul rolls around, our calendar is nearly full. So if you’re thinking of upgrading your sukkah or adding an awning, start early! Of course, we’ll always do our best to accommodate last-minute calls, but advance planning makes for a smoother, calmer Erev Yom Tov.

Raincoats that will keep them dry in style.
