Ready to go somewhere?

718.600.6666 Driving you happy!

(Re: Playing the Lead, Issue 222) I really enjoyed the article “Playing the Lead” and loved the advice, especially the idea to step forward as someone approaches to say mazel tov. When I’m the baalas simcha, I also try to say something as I’m stepping forward, but it can be tricky because, obviously, the guest needs to tell me mazel tov, so what can I say to her? My solution is to say, “Wow” in greeting, showing pleasure at their presence, or even to say, “Look who’s here!” I feel it makes the other person feel very valued. At a wedding this week I observed some exemplary mechuteniste behavior. This is what I saw: As the kallah walked in, her mother immediately walked over with her to the other end of the hall where the chasan’s great-grandmother was standing with her walker, already wearing her fur coat and ostensibly on her way out. This elter-bubby’s face lit up when she found herself facing the kallah so quickly and unexpectedly. She joyously removed her coat and put her walker aside, took the kallah by the hands and danced. But that was not all. When their dance was over, the kallah’s mother walked the kallah to a different corner of the hall, where the kallah’s other great-grandmother sat. I saw the shock and joy on the bubby’s face when she saw the kallah approaching her. She wouldn’t have to push through the crowd while being supported by family members on each side, after all, and she would dance with the kallah first, as was only fitting! When this bubby finished her dance, the kallah’s mother continued to do the same for two more elter-bubbies. Of course, the appropriate W E A T H E R

family members joined each round, and everyone was bursting with joy, baruch Hashem. Only after all the elter-bubbies had danced with the kallah did the kallah’s mother break into a joyful dance with her daughter in the center of the hall. This public display of derech eretz shown to these four bubbies — all of them Holocaust survivors — is something I will never forget and hope to emulate. GIVE US A TOUR

(Re: Power Tools, Issue 222) Dear Lani, Can you please invite The Boro Park View readers to see the inside of your new home after the cleaning crew leaves? We’re dying of curiosity, and after witnessing Andy, Louis, Mikhail and the rest of the crew going in and out so many times, and putting up with all the setbacks, don’t you think we deserve a tour? We were tempted to peek in without permission, but with the back and forth in The Boro Park View about how unethical that is, we managed to restrain ourselves. Thank you so much! An Avid Reader

I’M LIKE RIVA

(Re: Power Tools, Issue 222) What a sore topic Power Tools touched on this week! As we enter the last stretch of winter and head into the Yom Tov season, I’m preparing to leave the job that I held for many years. My kids are growing up, and being a working mother has simply become too complicated. Reading about the challenges Riva finds in the change of daily schedule and income got me very nervous. Is there anyone that has recently been through this and can offer advice on how best to navigate this transition? T.M.

LIKE AN EAGLE

(Re: Keep Your Baby Safe, Your Say, Issue 222) “A Local Driver “ raises a very real and unfortunately common problem of women pushing baby strollers into the street while they wait to cross. We would do well to remember the pasuk “kanesher ya’ir kino.” Rashi tells us that the eagle carries its young on its back to protect them from the hunter’s arrow. While no one is suggesting pulling the stroller behind you, it would be best to wait on the sidewalk for the light to change. THE SOLUTION IS ALREADY HERE

(Re: The Housing Crisis, Inbox, Issue 222) In response to the letter writer requesting that rabbanim, askanim and laymen get to work on finding a solution to the lack of housing for frum families in Boro Park, I have news for you: They already did that work and found a solution. Hundreds of families have already moved out to Linden, NJ, and the surrounding towns. The reality is that there is a limit to how much Boro Park can expand, and there is no way it can keep up with our community’s enormous growth. No amount of askanus can create cheap housing in an overcrowded city. The only solution is for people to change their mindset and acknowledge that there are other suitable cities where heimish families can live. I myself have recently moved out, and I have never looked back. Best of all? The Boro Park View is now available right here in Linden as well! A Reader

MIDDLE PATH

SHOP SPRING SUMMER

(Re: The Bottom Line, Issue 221) Thank you for your issue on returns and return policies. However, I’m afraid that the article on return policies did not reflect my general experiences. Recently, one store would not even offer me store credit for a robe that did not fit, and this was 24 hours after purchasing it. According to the article, the return policy was created due to bad experiences, but is there no middle ground between giving away clothing for free and making it a little easier for us busy Yiddishe mothers to shop? A Local Shopper

ROOM FOR FLEXIBILITY

(Re: The Bottom Line, Issue 221) I think most people understand that a store cannot be expected to accept returns on seasonal items after Yom Tov. But what about non-seasonal items, basics like skirts? I accidentally bought a basic black skirt in the wrong length (27 inches instead of 29 inches), and the store refused to let me exchange it. The racks were full, and this skirt is still being sold every day at full price. I think there is room for stores to be more flexible. Thank you to The Boro Park View for allowing everyone to share their “view” on these matters! Esther L.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN

(Re: The Bottom Line, Issue 221) It bothers me tremendously when I spend money on beautiful clothing only to find that it pills terribly the first time it’s washed (yes, according to the instructions). Unfortunately, my experience has been that some stores will not always stand by their products and offer me a refund or store credit. I realize that stores take a loss by doing so, as presumably their supplier will not give them a refund or credit (or perhaps the sales staff does not wish to go through the hassle of asking). I also realize that everyone means well. But perhaps the halacha should be clarified, and store owners and shoppers should be educated about what degree of responsibility they hold. A. Cohen

EYE-OPENING

(Re: The Bottom Line, Issue 221) Thank you so much for sharing with us customers the thought process behind creating your return policies. When I walk into local stores now, I do so with a different eye. I notice the number of salespeople, the amount of merchandise coming and going, and the customer service that’s necessary to keep everything running smoothly. With all that in mind, I must say thank you to our dedicated store owners who truly try their best to make the shopping experience a wonderful one for all involved. A Local Customer

RETURN TO OUR STANDARDS

(Re: How Do You Return? Issue 221) I was appalled at the article about returning items bought online. It appears that there is a segment of Klal Yisroel that is not heeding the psak of Harav Wosner, zt”l, in terms of online shopping. If Rav Wosner claimed that shopping online is against halacha, why would you publicize this breach? Would you print articles about people who are nichshal and speak a lot of lashon hara? To make something so wrong sound normal and accepted is a tremendous responsibility. Who knows how many readers, who were keeping strong until now, will weaken in their resolve due to this article? Let us rather be mechazek each other in doing what’s right by heeding the call of the gedolim and doing whatever we can to ensure ehrliche doros. As your article proves, online shopping does not even save money. People buy much more than they need and then don’t end up returning what they don’t need, so the “l’tzorech parnassah” heter would not apply. I don’t think I’ve ever heard any dayan discussing a heter “l’tzorech convenience.” I hope you can rectify any damage that was done, and please refrain from printing such material in the future. Signed, A Yiddishe Mama Who Refrains From Shopping Online as a Zechus for Ehrliche Doros

Three Fires Hit Boro Park in 24 Hours Firefighters worked overtime in Boro Park last week, with three blazes reported in a span of just 24 hours. The first took place on the night of February 14, when illegal fireworks detonated on 10th Avenue and 41st Street caused a parked car to explode and go up in flames. The car was irreparably damaged by the fire. A second fire was reported several hours later, this one breaking out on the third floor of a vacant building located on 40th Street between Fort Hamilton Parkway and 12th Avenue shortly after midnight. Numerous teams rushed to the scene to battle the flames, with the scene secured by the NYPD to prevent squatters who had previously been living in the building from returning. Firefighters were called to Boro Park once again the next morning, when a minibus that had been taking children to school burst into flames on 23rd Avenue and 80th Street. All of the passengers who had been on the bus were dropped off just moments before the bus caught fire, with the bus driver being credited for getting the children safely evacuated after realizing that something was wrong with his vehicle. No injuries were reported in any of the fires.

New York’s Credit Card Surcharge Law Goes Into Effect New Yorkers who pay for their purchases with credit cards may be applauding a new law that went into effect on February 11, but businesses that have to comply with the regulations may be finding themselves dealing with an extra headache. The law requires businesses to clearly post the total price being charged for an item or service before checkout and prohibits businesses from inflating the surcharge beyond its actual cost. Businesses will have the option of listing both the credit card and the cash price for every item or service, listing the credit card price and informing customers that they will receive a discount for paying with cash, or listing all prices at the higher credit card rate. Signs saying that all purchases are subject to a credit card surcharge are illegal under the law, as is categorizing credit card surcharges as a processing, service or similarly titled fee. “New Yorkers should never have to deal with hidden credit card costs, and this law will ensure individuals can trust that their purchases will not result in surprise surcharges,” said Hochul, who signed the law in December. The new law does not apply to debit cards and is intended to provide consumers with greater transparency while saving them from being hit with unexpected fees at the register.

Taxi Drivers Busted for Scheme To Bypass JFK Passenger Pick-Up Line Two Queens cabbies were sentenced to prison last week for their part in a scheme that hacked the dispatch system at JFK Airport and bumped taxi drivers to the front of the passenger pick-up line for a $10 fee. Taxi drivers are required to wait in a holding lot before being dispatched to the airport’s terminals, a

process that can have them waiting several hours between fares. Two men, 47-year-old Daniel Abayev and 49-year-old Peter Layman, conspired with Russian hackers from at least September 2019 through September 2021, expediting as many as 1,000 fraudulent taxi trips per day. The two would send out a mass text to a group of taxi drivers reading “shop open,” letting them know that they could pay up to skip to the head of the line on days they controlled the dispatch system. The men pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, with Layman sentenced to two years in jail and Abayev to four for his larger role in the scheme. The two were also each ordered to forfeit $161,858 and make over $3.4 million in restitution payments. The two Russian hackers remain at large and are facing maximum prison sentences of ten years in prison. “The significant charges in this alleged hacking conspiracy show that the Port Authority takes seriously our obligation to safe and equitable operations across our facilities,” said Port Authority Inspector General John Gay. “As alleged, this brazen scheme corrupted a system that hard-working taxi drivers rely on to earn a living, all so the defendants could make some extra cash.”

New Outdoor Dining Regulations May Be Tough To Swallow Those COVID-era road-clogging outdoor eateries that create endless traffic on city streets may soon be a thing of the past, with complex new regulations emerging that owners say make compliance nearly impossible. New York City released its final rules for outdoor dining early this month, and while sidewalk cafes are still permitted, restaurant owners will have to jump through many hoops to keep the many sheds currently dotting local streets. Under the new rules, roadway dining sheds will only be allowed from April through November 30, and they must be wheelchair accessible, open air, easily moveable, have drainage systems, match size requirements, and and be situated in approved locations. Worse yet for restaurateurs who have grown accustomed to using city streets for free, they will be required to pay for the space they use. The new regulations take effect on March 3. All in-street restaurants, even those that already exist, will be required to go through an application process outlined in the city’s 31page regulations guide. “We have not really figured it out yet,” Rosanna Scotto, co-owner of a Manhattan restaurant that spent $160,000 on its roadway shed told the New York Post. “Please let me know if you do.” While the new rules are daunting for restaurateurs, drivers are likely to appreciate being able to better navigate city streets, and to seeing at least some of the many parking spots occupied by the sheds restored. City officials hailed the requirements with city sanitation commissioner Jessica Tisch saying, “This administration has found a way to continue outdoor dining in New York City while prioritizing cleanliness.” 86

CHAPTER 45 Overwhelmed with stress, Lani invites Riva to work for her breakfast business. Riva accepts the offer. Mr. Gabioff calls.

“M

rs. Stroh. Hi. Hi, how are you.” It was a statement, not a question, but Riva automatically muttered the requisite, “Baruch Hashem.” “Good. Good, good. That’s good.” His voice, although unnervingly gentle, burned like acid in her ears. At the same time, she sensed Lani’s eyes on her, observing Riva with frantic curiosity and making Riva extra nervous. Riva went outside to the small patio off her parents’ kitchen and closed the door behind her. “I understand you made the decision to leave our company,” Mr. Gabioff said, dragging his words with irritating slowness. “And that’s okay. I’m not calling to question your decision. I’m actually calling to tell you a

little story.” A story. Really. “You know, Mrs. Stroh, I joined the workforce when I was sixteen years old. Sixteen. A yeshiva boy.” He paused to allow the number to sink in. Riva dusted the rim of one of her mother’s planters. “Sixteen,” he repeated, with emphasis. “Yeshiva wasn’t for me, and my parents made sure to constantly remind me what the effort was costing them.” He gave a bitter moan. “We were so poor, ach. You should never know what it means to be so poor.” Riva made the barest sound, just to indicate that she was still on the phone. “But anyway, that’s not the point,” he said, his voice growing brisk. “The point is, I took a job — in yeshiva, no less — to take care of both

problems, my failure as a yeshiva student and the money issue.” Why was he telling her this? What did he want? “And you know what my job was? It had a title. It was called janitor’s assistant. Yes, yes. I was supposed to help Salvador with his custodian work. I organized his supplies, I packed away seforim in the classrooms, I even became the yeshiva’s unofficial hashavas aveidah coordinator. And guess what, sometimes I even helped clean. Mop floors, wash windows… Humble beginnings, eh?” Riva hadn’t heard her boss’s throaty laugh for an entire week, and when it came through the phone now, it chilled her blood. “Basically,” Mr. Gabioff continued, “you can say that I’ve been in the cleaning line since the age of sixteen. Back then I picked up all the used cups from the floor around the sink area, and these days I send my crews to scrub windows and tiles.” Riva straightened the patio chairs absently. She was probably supposed to say something now, but she couldn’t think of an appropriate comment, and she also didn’t trust her voice to cooperate. But Mr. Gabioff didn’t wait for her comments. He went right on. “I have to admit, it wasn’t easy. There was no pride in the job, no sense of accomplishment. Definitely no prestige. And still, I showed up to work every day, on time. I did what I had to do, and I brought home my joke-of-a-paycheck to my parents at the end of every week. And look!” Riva heard a bang in the background. He’d probably pounded on his desk, and for a moment, Riva wondered if he was conducting this conversation from his desk in the Kleenup office, with all her former employees listening. “Look at where it got me,” he proclaimed. “Believe me, I faced a lot of challenges along the way. I could’ve given up a thousand times. I could’ve quit my job that day when Salvador got mad about something and kicked an overflowing bag of garbage in my face. But I didn’t. I picked myself up, brushed myself off, and moved right on.” A dusty breeze swept over Riva’s face, and she shivered. She hadn’t known where her boss was going with his cute little story, but a strange suspicion rose in her chest. “Such challenges, those are our opportunities,” he said. “We can choose to give up — and nobody would blame us — or we can choose to be strong and rise above it.” He let out a loud breath. “I know you’ve had a rough few months, Mrs. Stroh, whatever it was you’ve been dealing with. And I’m sure it’s been difficult to juggle your job on top of that. I did give you a lot of leeway, but I guess that wasn’t enough for you. So look, I’m not telling you what to do, but all I can say is, if you want to get anywhere in life, you can’t let your challenges stand in your way. That’s not the path to success. That’s weakness.” Riva’s gaze froze on the space between two planks of patio

decking. Her boss had confirmed her suspicion. He thinks I quit my job because of Fraidy’s therapy appointments. Nothing, in all the years of putting up with her boss’s abrasiveness, hurt as much as this realization. She’d walked away from her job because of him, because of his unbearable attitude, his mind games and micromanagement, his belittling sarcasm. And he didn’t even know it. * * * * *

Six o’clock, when Lani’s alarm clock rang, she sat up in bed, instantly alert. Today. It felt like bedikas chametz day, only more intense. The cleaning crew — not Kleenup, she’d gotten a different recommendation from Gittel Indig, a crew her daughter had used that was very well priced and supposedly terrific — would be at her door at eight o’clock. With school out, Riva had thoughtfully invited all the Eisdorf girls for that day and the next, so Lani could pack and unpack in peace. “The big girls will make a day camp,” Riva had said. “And if things seem to be under control, I’ll try to come over to help you.” Lani had also told Devorah Nieder that she needed these two days off, and Devorah had been very gracious about it. “Look,” she’d joked. “I planned on ordering you breakfast from Break In the day of your move, but…” When the kids were all dressed, Lani served them toast with butter, and then they went outside. “Davening will be part of your day camp program, right, Malky?” “Yup,” Malky confirmed. Lani pulled Chevi aside and put her hand on her shoulder. “You’ll have a nice day with Fraidy, right, my love?” Chevi shrugged, and Lani took that as a yes. The crew did not show up at eight o’clock, and fifteen minutes later, after waving OZ off when his bus came, Lani started getting antsy. She waited ten more minutes, then called to find out what was happening. “Yes, yes, missus, we’re on the way. There was a delay with the train, I’m so sorry.” Riva showed up a few minutes before nine. “Those girls are the cutest,” she reported. “Your Malky is taking her head counselor job very seriously, and she’s got herself a bunch of highly enthusiastic campers.” They didn’t talk about Chevi and Fraidy, but Lani knew that Riva was thinking about them. They’ll be alright, she told herself, half confident, half praying. “Nu, where are those ladies?” Riva asked. “If Mr. Gabioff would be their boss…”

SHE’D WALKED AWAY FROM HER JOB BECAUSE OF HIM, BECAUSE OF HIS UNBEARABLE ATTITUDE, HIS MIND GAMES AND MICROMANAGEMENT, HIS BELITTLING SARCASM

to it. Riva was drawing a line, separating herself from the pain of the past and focusing on what lay ahead. She deserved a medal for that, Lani thought. Or at the very least, a really nice breakfast. Hmm. “Well, should we get started now?” Lani asked the crew. Before long, Spanish music blared over Stella’s speaker, with each of the ladies stationed in her designated room. Riva leaned over the island in Lani’s kitchen. “Hard to believe, huh?” she asked. Lani smiled. It was nearly impossible to believe. Construction had forced them to jump through some dizzying hoops — jointly, and individually — and now, there was a house to show for it. She’d gotten what she wanted. Ownership. Stability. Space. But strangely, that wasn’t why she felt like singing. It was something else entirely: the process that had brought them to this day. The small and big hurdles they’d faced, and overcome.

her sister wasn’t paying attention to Maddie at all. She was gaping at the rest of the crew in complete shock. “What’s up?” Lani asked. “Do you know them?” Stella, who seemed to be the leader of the crew, stepped forward. “Of course she knows us. We used to work for that guy…” She drew circles near her temple and gave a dramatic shudder. “They were part of the Kleenup crews,” Riva explained in a strange, detached voice. “So…” Riva addressed them. “You just… went out on your own?” “Of course. Who needs a boss? No more yelling, no more threatening.” She made a face at Riva. “I don’t know how you work for that man. He’s a…” Riva raised her hand to stop her. “It doesn’t matter, Stella. I’m happy things worked out for you.” Lani waited for her sister to reveal that she didn’t work for “that man” anymore, but Riva didn’t say a word. She probably didn’t want to make a chillul Hashem, but there was something more

At 9:05, when Lani was gearing up to have a panic attack, the bell finally rang. Riva went to open the door, and a moment later, Lani heard her squeal. “Stella! Oh my goodness, Jessica. Amanda. Kathy. Darlene.” Lani sprinted over to the door. “Hi, good morning, ladies! Come in, come in.” She turned to Riva. “What’s going on?” “Uh… These ladies are —” But Lani cut her short when she noticed one more woman at the foot of the stairs. Riva whirled around, and together, they cried, “Maddie!” Their cleaning lady grinned and blushed furiously as she hobbled up the stairs. “Hello, hello,” she stammered. “You — you work for this company?” Lani asked. “Since when?” “I started two weeks ago. You know, I only work a few hours for Riva, and a little for Gittel. So Gittel tells me about this group, and they have work for me on the other days. So I come.” Lani was totally floored, but when she looked at Riva to share her surprise,

LANI NOTICED ONE MORE WOMAN AT THE FOOT OF THE STAIRS. RIVA WHIRLED AROUND, AND TOGETHER, THEY CRIED, “MADDIE!”

to camp. “You look adorable,” Riva told Fraidy as they stood in front of the house, waiting for the Machne Reyim bus. She was wearing a white denim jumper with red trim, and she looked like summer personified, facing a world that could do her no harm.

If Riva wanted a taste of true stay-at-home-mom-ness, she got two weeks of the real deal. With school out, it was totally on her to entertain, feed and keep the peace among her brood. But no matter how chaotic the days got, there was a certain peacefulness that kept her going: the thought that she was able to be home with them and did not have to accept babysitting favors from the whole world the way she’d had to at such times when she’d been working. She took the kids along to her mother’s house on days when Lani had work for her. She even managed to send the Eisdorfs supper the night after their move. And now the endless stretch of structure-less days was over. The kids were off

“It’s going to be an amazing summer,” Riva assured her. “And remember, you’re not running away from Chevi. You’re exploring a space of your own, and in your new space, nobody can hurt you, because you don’t allow them to.” Oy, she sounded like a therapist, and Fraidy rightfully responded with a ladylike little snort. But Riva didn’t care, because it was true. Fraidy wasn’t escaping — and neither was she. They were putting one foot in front of the other, sidestepping obstacles rather than attacking them, and taking steps toward true freedom. The bus pulled up and Riva watched Fraidy walk toward it hesitantly. Her daughter stood at the open door for a moment, looked back at Riva, and waved shyly. Then she boarded, and as the bus roared off, the sound echoed with a heady sense of power.

THE BEST PART!

S H E V Y H O L L A N D E R

It’s 1:00 a.m., and in a home somewhere in the tristate area, several individuals sit around a table paying the clock no heed. The clients speak of wishes and dreams and personal quirks. Across the table, Mr. Sam Obstfeld listens keenly, even as the conversation flows jovially. As he takes in what is said — and that which is left unsaid — he deftly sketches, pencil gliding upon paper, bringing into physical reality that which was an almost inconceivable vision just moments before. How does he do it?

Years earlier, they sat around a different table, high up on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. In the iconic restaurant Windows on the World, where ambassadors, politicians and the greatest business tycoons convened regularly, a groundbreaking meeting was taking place: Citibank’s officials, investors and influential clients were there for the unveiling of the architectural plans for an ATM vestibule, the first of its kind, which would close off the front of the banks and provide 24-hour access for bank clients without compromising security.

However, Citibank’s in-house architect, fresh and young, but talented beyond his years, the mastermind behind the concept that would entirely revolutionize banking, was not in attendance. He was across the city in the hospital with his wife. It was a special night for him, the night he was to become a father and welcome his first child into this world. His assistant quickly drove over to the hospital to pick up the portfolio, which he presented to the team, and the idea was met with approval. “It’s a contribution I am proud to have shared with the world,” Mr. Sam Obstfeld says about the job he held early in his career. “The gift of becoming a father was definitely worth the trade-off of missing the unveiling. And I am grateful the concept was attributed to me fully despite my absence.”

THROUGH THE EYES OF AN ARTIST It started with a little boy who had big dreams and spatial abilities that set his mind in motion any time he laid his eyes upon an object that he could mentally turn into a structure. His classmates would play with their blocks and toy cars, but young Sam was fascinated by the carton boxes with cellophane windows he’d come across. He’d cut them apart and 116

Serge Klein Architects in Manhattan, where his employer trusted him with the keys and with setting his own hours. The flexibility enabled him to schedule his work around the further schooling he needed. Post graduation, he was employed by a reputable architectural firm where he was given substantial responsibility even though he was still a beginner architect. Some time after that, he was hired by Citibank as their in-house architect. Besides the opportunity and chance to make a mark on the banking industry that the job at Citibank afforded him, his position eventually led Mr. Obstfeld to segue into private work. “One of my chassidish friends from Bobov was working in collaboration with the bank, and he asked if I could do some design work for Bobov. Before I knew it, I was so busy designing private homes in Boro Park and Williamsburg that I could no longer balance it with the work in the bank, and so I switched to private work, which was a blessed part of my life.” Baruch Hashem, that blessing has continued. It’s been over 40 years now, and Mr. Obstfeld takes joy in every part of the labor.

create little cities, entire urban landscapes featuring a smattering of high-rise buildings. When he was ten years old, he’d often ride the IRT with his mother. This was prior to the days when trains were so packed you didn’t have a place to sit or put your foot down. What caught ten-year-old Sam’s attention was not the cityscape flying past the windows, but the subway car in which they sat, his mother and himself. “If we needed to live in this subway car,” he’d ask his mother as the gears in his mind spun faster than the wheels of the train, “how could we divide it up for spacious living?” Mr. Obstfeld’s brain was not only filled with spatial imaginations and renovations, but with bursts of color and neat rows of Mr. Obstfeld’s brain was not only filled with spatial logic. He enjoyed delving into artistic endeavors that led to masterimaginations and renovations, but with bursts of pieces with his name on it, and he also displayed mathematical acucolor and neat rows of logic men and an affinity to the sciences that enabled him to excel in those subjects in school. This combination of skills and passion pointed to an obvious career choice when he graduated high school. “Well, I could have become an artist, painting and not making much of a living,” Mr. Obstfeld says in a nod to his artistic self that loved to mix colors. But as a young man who was expected to support the family he hoped for, he headed straight in the direction of studying architecture.

A YOUNG STAR Several years of coursework and intensive training later, Mr. Obstfeld was lucky to graduate with his Bachelor’s degree as one of the top students. “It’s all G-d-given blessings,” he says. He landed a great job with 118

WORK OF THE HAND In this era of computerized drawings and AI bots, Mr. Obstfeld works the way he did when he started out — with a pencil and paper. “The computer’s my competitor!” Mr. Obstfeld quips. “But I’m faster.” As he sits with his clients, without missing a beat or an utterance that gives him a clue of what kind of home would best suit their needs, his deft pencil strokes soon take shape right on the page. Mr. Obstfeld explains that hand-drawn plans are more personal than any a computer can generate. This is Mr. Obstfeld’s mantra, and it’s woven into every step of the process.

SOLUTIONS!

There’s a special satisfaction in hitting upon that perfect solution for a client, one that Mr. Obstfeld revels in. “Just recently a client looked at me like I was nuts,” he shares. “‘Why are you still getting so excited because you found the perfect place for the pantry?’ He was incredulous. “But I can’t help it. I am excited. To me, finding that perfect place for an element of the home feels like I just erected a monument.”

IT TAKES TWO

With the exceptions of clients aboard, Mr. Obstfeld meets face to face in clients’ homes for every part of the design process, traveling to homes in Manhattan, Boro Park, Williamsburg, Monsey, Crown Heights, Connecticut, Long Island, Lakewood, and then some. “Every client I take on needs to know this: I need them to be involved in every step of the process.” Mr. Obstfeld takes the input of cli“I know that I am not smarter than my clients. I don’t get intimidated by their suggestions; there are so many spatially talented people out there. And even if I don’t agree with their ideas, I always operate from an understanding that this is their home, their project, and I will try to find a way to incorporate their wishes within the framework of my understanding of architecture and design.” Mr. Obstfeld is clear that a project is never about how it’ll look to outsiders. It has to be beautiful only to the owners, the people who will be occupying the home. Is he concerned about how it will look in his portfolio? Aside from the fact that Mr. Obstfeld takes pride in each project he designs, he does not have a portfolio. Just a mental roster of clients and their stories, each one dearer than the next. As the project unfolds, the client’s input is sought out every step of the way. “How else would I know that the 122

The passion is there; the love for his work is clear. And it’s why every new design that carries Mr. Obstfeld’s name is its own special, unique project. In terms of other solutions, Sam gets a feel if there’s anything in particular to address by listening to his clients’ banter and by getting acquainted with them. An example would be the fact that the mistress of the home is not the most organized housekeeper. “In that case I’ll want to focus on a plan that’ll hide the spaces that tend to get messy and leave exposed the areas that are easier to maintain.” Sometimes the disarray in a current home can be solved with the right space planning in the new home. Like the woman who felt her home was a mess, but knew it was so because she didn’t have enough storage space. And sometimes a woman just needs huge closets to dump some things into so the rest of the home can stay in order. Through schmoozing you find out a lot of things. You find out what’s important and what a client is worried about. And most importantly, you’ll know how the right home design can address these concerns.

OUT OF THE BOX “No. No trademarks,” says Mr. Obstfeld. Because really, to him every project is a new one, something never done before, a blank sheet of paper and a freshly sharpened pencil. But Sam does have an affinity for round elements, and he explains that a round room or area is like a beautiful brooch on a black dress. It should not be overdone and very carefully placed. What Mr. Obstfeld loves about the roundness is that it’s not confined to corners, so aside from lending the home spaciousness, it doesn’t have to be oriented in a specific way and can salvage a lopsided home with its lack of angles. “Actually, I did have a trademark design in the past,” says Mr. Obstfeld, but the modern clean lines of today have rendered it ob124

solete. “Everyone knew that my homes always had niches to make things pretty. Instead of placing odd-shaped closets to fill extra little corners, I’d incorporate niches into the walls, and then a spotlight would be placed in the hollow, a pretty picture, some flowers… they were attractive little touches in the homes I designed.” When it started phasing out, some clients were outraged when they saw their design. “Where’s my niche?” they’d demand. But it could no longer be streamlined in the new homes without looking out of place. But what goes around comes around. Mr. Obstfeld is now working on a brand-new home in Boro Park in conjunction with a talented young decorator. It’s a traditional modern home, and what do you know? They’re actually putting two niches in it!

THE LANGUAGE OF THE TRADE

Mr. Obstfeld speaks English, Italian and Hungarian. He picked up a fluent Italian working with a great many Italian clients over the years. The latter was the prerequisite for staying in his in-law’s family, since Mrs. Obsfeld’s parents were originally from Budapest, and indeed, it is a place the couple frequents. They spend at least one Shabbos in the area every time they are in Venice, and Sam is currently designing a beautiful home in the Buda proper. Additionally, Mr. Obstfeld’s mother has roots in Russia, which has given him an almost fluent command of Russian, and his easy understanding of German can be attributed to the fact that he was born in that country. Finally, his education has seen to it that he can also get around a conversation in French.

ALL IN A DAY’S TRAVELS Mr. Obstfelds workday starts between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. with a remote appointment with a client in either Europe or Israel. By noon he generally sets out to his first local client’s home. Each meeting takes several hours, and by 1:30 a.m., he’s usually ready to wrap up with the day’s last client. But that’s not a given! If a client is in the metro, Mr. Obstfeld may drive over, but anywhere further out has him sitting back while his driver takes the wheel. And it’s a good thing, too. If not for long-distance travels, do you think this interview would ever fit into a schedule like Mr. Sam Obstfeld’s?

Tzava’as Rav Yehuda Hachassid: Does it apply in our day and age?

After days of decisions and planning, the blueprints were finally ready. Together with their contractor, the Rosens did a walkthrough of the apartment they were about to renovate. As they indicated which walls they intended to move and where they wanted to remove windows, the contractor pointed out that they would need to leave a hole open. “Tzava’as Rav Yehuda Hachassid,” he said. Mrs. Rosen was surprised. Did they really need to take into consideration a will written 800 years ago? Was it important to follow these parameters? To better understand the impact of the tzava’ah, let’s take a trip into history to learn about the author of this famous will and the controversy it sparked.

T .

G E S T E T N E R

THE AUTHOR AND HIS TIMES One day, Rav Shmuel Hanavi, as Rav Shmuel Shapiro was lovingly dubbed by the community, was walking in the streets of Speyer, Germany, when he suddenly looked up at the sky and saw the heavens open wide. He turned to the people accompanying him and said, “Do you see this? You can ask for whatever you want!” One asked for children, the other for wealth, and Rav Shmuel asked for sons who would be just like him. Indeed, Rav Shmuel fathered two sons, Rav Avraham and Rav Yehuda, both of whom followed in their illustrious father’s ways. In an episode similar to the one that is told about Rashi’s mother, before Rav Yehuda was born, his mother was walking to shul when a wagon suddenly rushed by, pushing her against the wall of a narrow alleyway. A miracle happened, and as if bowing in her honor, the wall caved in to avoid crushing her, and she was saved. The year was approximately 1150, during the period of the Baalei Tosafos. As young Yehuda grew up, it became clear that he was far from the ordinary. “If he were born in the times of the nevi’im, he would have been a navi,” the people said, “and if he would have lived in the times of the tannaim, he would have been a great tanna.” In cities like Speyer and Regensburg, lofty tzaddikim lived with mysticism and fasting, deriving no pleasure from this world. One area of specialty they toiled in was the wording of the siddur, which they clarified with a tradition dating back to the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah. Rav Yehuda’s father, Rav Shmuel, composed the mystical Shir Hayichud, which we say on Yom Kippur night after davening. Written with a ruach hakodesh akin to nevuah, the work testifies to the level of its composer. Rav Yehuda, in turn, authored Anim Zemiros. He is also quoted several times in Tosafos. The Chassidei Ashkenaz lived with a different brand of kabbalah, still centuries before the Arizal (who lived from 1534 to 1572) discovered the Zohar Hakadosh. More than a knowledge of sefiros, it was practical mysticism with supernatural, physical implications. Rav Shmuel, for example, created a golem that accompanied him on his travels of personal galus. He once saved a lion in distress, and from that point on, the lion also accompanied him wherever he went.

He was able to move neshamos and abolish Heavenly decrees. Rav Yehuda himself held the key to the secrets of the Torah. Although he was capable of using the Shem Hashem to achieve miracles, he warned the people of his time against following supernatural practices. Instead, he taught, if a person leads a punctilious and moral life, especially in the middah of emes, he will merit that everything he says will come true. Rav Yehuda lived a life of self-denial and adhered to strict moral standards. He lived in this world, but his mind soared in the heavens. Even among the Chassidei Ashkenaz, Rav Yehuda was a unique phenomenon. Like many kabbalists, Rav Yehuda had a chest full of holy documents and secrets. He warned his wife never to go near it at specific times. On the one occasion that she forgot his instructions, she touched it. This forced Rav Yehuda into his personal galus, and he moved to the city of Regensburg. In Regensburg, the non-Jews sought to annoy the Yidden, and every time a niftar was taken through a certain gate on

“If he were born in the times of the nevi’im, he would have been a navi,” the people said, “and if he would have lived in the times of the tannaim, he would have been a great tanna” 132

its way to burial, they would ring a bell hanging from the gate. When Rav Yehuda Hachassid was suffering his last illness, he said, “If I am a ben Olam Haba, let the gate fall down after I pass away.” Shortly before he was niftar, community members came to visit. Rav Yehuda instructed them to sweep the floor. “Do you see anything?” he asked. When they replied in the negative, Rav Yehuda told them to look again. In the earth was engraved the word “chassid.” As he had written in his Sefer Chassidim, Rav Yehuda Hachassid ensured that divrei Torah were constantly spoken during his final hours so his neshamah would depart amidst kedushah. He relinquished his holy neshamah on Taanis Esther, in the year 1217. When the aron was brought through the gate, the gatekeeper ran to ring the bell as usual. Suddenly, the gate collapsed, along with the bell, and the gatekeeper was killed. Even the non-Jews recognized the special kedusha of Rav Yehuda Hachassid.

THE GUIDELINES OF BUILDING Besides the general guidelines outlined in the tzava’ah, which include quite a few on the topic of whom one may marry, there are several points related to building and construction. Don’t build a home on land on which no one has lived before. If you don’t want to leave it vacant, you may build and move in after twelve months. The Chasam Sofer suggests that one may allow a chicken to live there first. Others cite leniencies for a rebbi or communal activist, a young couple right after marriage, or tenants renting the space. Other suggestions include building a sukkah first or selling the home to someone else for the first year. Don’t close up doors and windows. Leave a hole in its place. This is meant as a way for sheidim to exit. After the hole is made, one is allowed to cover it with soft materials, paint over it, or block it with furniture. An oven should not be moved. Since there are sheidim beneath an oven, one places himself in danger when moving the oven. Some say that if the oven wasn’t used for cooking for a while, it is okay to move it. Others suggest selling the oven to a non-Jew and buying it back after the oven was moved. When remodeling a kitchen, one may move an oven in order to replace it with a new one, but there is some caution against moving its location. There are poskim who maintain the danger only applies to the person moving the oven and not its owner. Others dismiss this warning as inapplicable today, since ovens are no longer fixed to the ground. Leave the mezuzahs in place. It is considered a danger to remove mezuzahs from a home when moving out. When a house has no mezuzah, it has no shemirah, and mazikin can enter. Even if the new tenant will remove them, one should not remove his mezuzahs when he leaves, although some opinions allow retrieving them from the new tenant once he has replaced them. If the apartment will be painted before the next tenant moves in, the old tenant may remove them himself. The poskim say that if the home will be rented to a non-Jew or apikorus, one should remove the mezuzahs before leaving. Some other prohibitions in the tzava’ah include two brothers living in one building, two people with the same name living in the same home, houses built of stone, and building a mikvah in one’s home. Additionally, a home should not be built taller than the shul, and if someone decides to move back into a home in which he had lived previously, seven years should have passed in the interim.

When the unexpected happens, building your dream house can turn into a nightmare. Three women share their stories of construction gone wrong, and professionals weigh in on how to fix it — and avoid these pitfalls.

IN HOT WATER Chava shares:

Eight years ago, we bought a new, spacious townhouse in Monsey. It was still under construction, which meant I had the opportunity to customize it according to our dreams. I was thrilled to put my whole heart into our home and spent months choosing beautiful floors, upgrading and tweaking finer details, and ensuring everything was comfortable and tasteful. We moved right after my fifth child was born, and we loved the new house. Everything was wonderful and perfectly suited to our family. One additional advantage was that the property had its own well. Since we didn’t use city water, our water bill was really low, just a nominal amount for the pumping services and not a substantial amount for water supply. It felt like an extra bonus, a free ride. It took around two years for us to notice a strange, cakey substance building up around the grout in the bathrooms and on the faucets. It felt almost like cement, but it was greenish white, and crumbly. We’d clean it from the shower heads and faucets, but it always reappeared. When we called a plumber to check it

out, he identified the substance as “hard water residue.” “You said you’re connected to well water,” he said, “right? Where’s the water softener?” We looked at him blankly. What softener? Apparently, Monsey is known to have “hard water,” meaning that high levels of minerals are present in the water (usually magnesium and calcium). Apparently, well water is much harder than the water coming from

This area is called Rockland County because the water is full of rocks. All over Monsey, white calcium builds up around the faucets, but wells are more problematic. Whoever has a well must have a softener. Otherwise, the rocks in the water will kill their pipes and appliances. If this house was built eight years ago, the water lines are likely to be plastic, with brass connectors. The calcium in the hard water will not sit on the plastic, but will settle on the brass, which can create holes in the pipes or cause them to burst open. The guy who took care of the well should have taken care of the softener, but the plumber and contractor should also have known it was needed and could have discussed it with the client. The softener has to be filled with salt every few months, and anyone who has to watch their sodium intake should avoid drinking the softened water, because although it won’t taste salty, it has high sodium content. In such cases, the water should not be used to make hot drinks, or even for cooking. If the softener is being installed in a shed, the shed needs to be heated to ensure it doesn’t freeze in winter. If the shed is not adjacent to the house, you need to dig the pipes below the freezing point. I don’t think that all the pipes and appliances have to be changed in one shot, but, yes, they will have to be changed eventually. — Shimon Halpern of Halpern Plumbing

The softener tank is a bulky piece of equipment that is usually built into the basement of a house during construction. It needs as much space as a large boiler, and salt needs to be added every few months to treat the water, which runs through it on its way to the house’s plumbing system. Without a softener, the hard well water was well on its way to killing our appliances and pipes, because from washing machine to fridge to faucets, pipes, and showers, everything gets damaged by the particles left in the hard water. Soon after the plumber came, a major pipe above the kitchen burst due to the hard water build-up. Pieces of our kitchen ceiling came down on our heads. To fix the problem, we were told, we’d have to remove the Sheetrock, change our pipes, replace all faucets and showerheads, and most importantly, install a water softener in the basement. At this point, there is no available space there, since we utilized the space very carefully. It looks like we’ll have to build a small shed outside for the water softener, and divert the incoming flow of water to be pumped through it on its way to the house. We still enjoy our new house, and we’re grateful for the wonderful moments we’re lucky to have raising our family there. But the expense and the stress have soured some of our joy.

ALL MIXED UP Baily shares:

The work on our house was progressing: Sheetrock, spackling, flooring, installing the cabinetry. As the workers did what they were hired to do, we tried to come by to check up on things. Although the builder was experienced, he’d just hired a new manager, straight out of yeshiva. The mistakes would have been funny — were this not our house. One day, we walked into the room which would be our playroom. One side was supposed to have closets for toys installed, the other side was supposed to house the Pesach kitchen. I looked from one wall to another. There were no toy closets, and two Pesach kitchens. One had to be ripped out so the closets could be installed. There were other things any experienced builder would have caught, but the manager onsite was completely new to the job. The playroom doors were installed off-center. It bothered me, so I contacted the developer about it. He called me back and said, “I went to check. You’re right that the doors are not centered with the room and the windows, but they’re centered with the hallways, which makes more sense.” I wanted the outside of the house painted in a sharp black and white. “No problem,” the builder said. I offered to go to the office of the siding company to pick out the colors. “No, they don’t have an office, just tell me any house in the area with the colors you like, and we’ll do it exactly the same.” I told him the address of a black and white house, and just to be sure, I also asked the homeowners for the invoice that listed the colors of their siding. I confirmed by phone with the developer that he’d gone past the house, and sent him the invoice. A short time later, my husband drove past our house and then asked me which colors I’d wanted, as it was being finished in a delicate elephant gray. What? I checked the invoice, and saw it indeed listed gray, the wrong color, because that client had changed their mind at the last minute. But the builder had assured me that he’d checked out the actual house. Well, obviously not. This was not entirely his fault, so when the developer told me he could only make the change if we paid $4,000 to have it redone, I decided to just pay and move on. I made a mistake and he made mistakes, but the biggest mistake was the lack of experience and communication. 148

The first thing to remember is that this is one side of the story. I don’t know to what extent all these issues were discussed and what agreements were made, and I don’t know what mitigating factors there might have been. For example, did the client change her mind twenty times? I once had someone who told me a total of fifteen times, “Paint the doors,” and then, “No, don’t paint the doors.” When my workers painted them, he said that the last thing he’d told me was, “Don’t paint the doors.” If you want the doors centered, specify: centered on the hallway, when you’re walking into the room? Or centered when you’re standing in the room, facing the doors? Centered between the window and the closet, or in the exact center of the wall? Every instruction and decision should be in writing. Texting or email is the way to communicate with your developer, not phone calls or face-to-face conversations. Take a picture of the color you want, and get a copy of the invoice, so that everything is recorded on paper or screen. I once had my workers paint some rooms with two contrasting colors. The client said we had reversed the color placements. We went back to the client’s email, and saw it was the client’s mistake, not ours. They had written the wrong colors in the instructions. What if it is the contractor’s mistake? I’ve made mistakes, and I’ve paid a lot of money for them. If the contractor has made a mistake, he has to pay the damage. If he refuses, or if he doesn’t supply what he is contracted to supply, then he is a thief. Take him to beis din. To be honest, you can avoid falling into this kind of situation by using a builder whom you trust. It’s like a shidduch — there has to be trust and respect and good communication. If you’re unsure of whether this person can do the job you want properly and get along with you amicably, or if you don’t like how he treats you, look for another contractor. Better to find a good shidduch than end up fighting with another Yid or feeling resentful and aggrieved. — A Local Builder

RAILING IT RIGHT Dini shares:

We built our home from scratch, and enjoyed investing thought into the details and design. When it came to the railing for our staircase, I envisioned a clean, uncluttered design to match the modernlooking space. We heard about someone who was supposed to be a top-ofthe-line, honest tradesman, and met with him. He promised us that he could create the railing we envisioned. We chose a design and agreed on a fair price. When he messaged me that the railing was installed, I went over to see it. I was horrified. He had taken our gorgeous railing and made big gaping holes to secure it in the steps. Around each spindle was a two-inch hole, covered with a big clumsy “shoe.” Instead of clean and modern, it looked klutzy, with our brand-new white oak staircase utterly botched up. The railing ran from downstairs to upstairs, and all over the landing, and I knew it would be too costly to redo the staircase and landing. It was a big disappointment. The railing tradesman refused to take responsibility for ruining our steps. Eventually, it was the flooring guy who saw how upset we were, felt bad for us, and used wood filler to fill in all the holes the railing guy made. It was a good solution, but if you look closely, you can see marks of the wood filler, and it still bothers me when I see it.

Well, the shoe generally comes along with the spindle. That’s standard; every spindle has a shoe, which is like a cap with a hole in the middle that sits at the bottom of the spindle. Modern railing spindles are square, and drill bits are round, so the shoe covers that round hole. Some people like the shoe as part of the design. It can also be made in steel to match the railing and look like a trim. Of course, it is possible to make a square hole to fit a spindle with no shoe. That’s an upgrade. If you have a very high-end, perfectionist worker, he could make the perfect hole, and just insert the spindle. I’ve had my workers do that, using a chisel instead of a drill for a square hole. It’s hard and complicated and takes time, and it is not standard procedure. It sounds like the client chose an upscale railing but did not choose an upscale builder who could do this. She expected perfection but wasn’t aware of how railings are crafted. When she went to the showroom, did the spindles have shoes or not? No tradesman can read your mind; make sure you’re aware of the options, and be very specific. — A Local Contractor

Instead of There are two ways to have more money. One meeting way is to earn more, and the other way is to spend friends for less. There were times when I felt stuck between coffee or these two truths. My husgoing out to band and I were working hard. We’d trimmed eat with my our budget to absolute necessities. We were just husband, we’d about covering our expenses; where would we go for a walk get the extra money to pay off the debt? It was in the park like walking on a tightrope; the smallest extra expense would push us off balance, and we’d lose the ability to make any payments toward our loans. Instead of meeting friends for coffee or going out to eat with my husband, we’d go for a walk in the park. Instead of buying coats at the beginning of the season, we’d buy them when they went on sale. It became a lifestyle change and an attitude that we implemented across the board. It was the only way we could accomplish what we needed to do. I alternated between optimistic determination and hopeless despair. There were days when I would wake up and tell my husband to take my entire paycheck and send it to so-and-so to pay off what we owed them. I was just desperate to see major headway, and nothing felt as good as crossing off another loan. But he was a steady voice of reason, reminding me that Purim was next week and we’d need the money. When I got anxious about the debt, he would remind me that we had a plan and we were making our payments. We were so focused those first months that any extra money that came in went straight to pay off debt. Ramsey advises people to “attack the debt full force,” and that’s what we were trying to do. My mother gave me $1,500 for my birthday that year and suggested we buy something new for the house — window shades to replace our paper shades, or a new couch we desperately needed. But I took the full amount and put it toward a loan. For me, that year, that was the best birthday gift. I’ll never forget the day I paid the tutor. My son had stopped going for tutoring (he was doing well without it), and we had canceled all extra curricular activities that weren’t 100% necessary. But of course, I still had to pay her what we owed. I held that $1,985 check proudly for a moment before mailing it out, and a wave of gratitude washed over me. I was grateful for that moment, the “1985 moment,” that had pulled me out of my state of denial. And I was even more grateful for being able to cross that loan off the sheet. We were chipping away at our mountain of debt, slowly and steadily. It was tough, but we were doing it.

Here comes the tractor, a vehicle with large rear wheels designed for lifting, pulling and pushing heavy loads. Named for its function to deliver high traction at low speed, the tractor is as powerful — with its four-wheel drive, power steering and diesel engine — as it is thrilling to the male population. The iconic tractor that’s most familiar to us all? That’s the backhoe, with its front loader bucket and backhoe at the rear.

SO MANY! Tractors come in more forms, names and functions than we could imagine. Here’s a sampling of the main tractor types:

INDUSTRIAL TRACTORS

ROW CROP TRACTORS

There to tow the heaviest loads in construction, its movable arms and attachments make it the perfect heavy lifter, mover and demolisher.

This handy machine is the ultimate farmhand. It’s a hybrid of tractor plus cultivator with its capacity to plow, level and mow, along with its added attachments that can thresh, pump, spray and lift.

ORCHARD TRACTORS Only for the orchard, this vehicle is narrow and uncovered for easy navigation among the trees as it sows, plows and tills. The driver can even pick fruit while seated! An orchard tractor has extra-hardy wheels to withstand the pokes of thorns or other fruit and flower debris, and yes, it can also transport farm equipment — though it’s not as heavy duty as its tractor cousins.

SPECIALTY TRACTORS

EARTHMOVING TRACTORS

These heroes come in where others can’t. Designed in many different ways for their unique intended use, the specialty tractor category includes narrow tractors to twist and turn in small confines, crawler tractors with continuous roller belts instead of wheels to navigate rough, steep or uneven ground conditions, and low-profile tractors — low-height tractors that are ideal for hard-to-reach spaces.

Here come the heavies! In this category are the excavators, the bulldozers and the backhoes. These movers and shakers work with a great many attachments for versatility, and boy do they perform! They demolish structures, dig trenches, grade the landscape, mine and drill, perform jobs underground and underwater, move and transport earth and debris, and clean up job sites.

TRACTORS OF OLD Tractors first hit the market at the turn of the twentieth century as monstrous masses of steel that changed the face of farming in a major way.

This 1903 monstrosity weighs in at 14,000 pounds.

This 1918 number, the Waterloo Boy, was the first tractor marketed by Deere & Co., and one of the first tractors with a combustion engine.

This 1923 kerosene-burning model weighs more than two tons and was the first tractor to be named John Deere, to replace the Waterloo Boy product line.

OUT TO SEA Still in use only in England as speedboats have proven more effective and comfy, the sea tractor, popular in the 1930s, was used to give passengers scenic tours and deliver them to dry land where there were no jetties or piers, or in instances of high tide.

TRACKING RECORDS Custom-built and setting earth atremble in Havre, Montana, the Big Bud 747 hit the world record as the largest farm tractor. At a height of fourteen feet and boasting a sixteen-cylinder Detroit diesel engine, this ogle-worthy piece can work nearly an acre and a half per minute.

CAT FACTS If you’re thinking tractor you wouldn’t be faulted for thinking CAT and the ubiquitous yellow rumblers manufactured by the Caterpillar company. But did you know that this brand was actually inspired by a caterpillar? That, and the comment of a photographer to the company founder, to the effect that the model with continuous tracks moves across a farm like a caterpillar. Mr. Founder ran with it and stuck with the name as the company’s trademark, even for trackless equipment. During World War I , the expert ability of CAT’s tracked machines to handle difficult terrain made them indispensable to the war effort. This led to the company’s manufacturing of gun tractors, which helped win the war. The British tank is also considered an inspiration of the Caterpillar.

This cutie is a Russian model and the world’s smallest tractor, suited to even the smallest yard because, hey, that driver you see in there? It’s a fake farmer mentchie. This tractor is way too small to be driven by a human and is operated by remote control.

TRACTOR OF THE FUTURE Thinking ahead evokes, of course, the image of everything auto and driverless. Well, here’s what it’ll look like in a tractor. This concept was produced by Case IH amid much brouhaha in 2017.

And the award for most-built tractor goes to the affordable Fordson model of the Ford Motor Company. This model’s eleven-year production run yielded nearly 740,000 tractors, making it the most popular tractor ever built.

DID YOU KNOW? Agriculture in the United States ranks as the second most hazardous industry, with the tractor the farming machine most riddled with jeopardy. Tractor-related injuries account for 32% of fatalities in farming accidents, with over half of that attributed to tractor overturns (and yes, wearing those seatbelts can save those drivers’ lives). Unlike tractors of old, today’s machines must be fitted with some form of roll-over protection structure (ROPS). Remember the space race between the US and Russia? Its effects have dribbled into agriculture in the form of modernities like the usage of GPS with tractors, which has brought precision and automation to a whole new level.

THREE, TWO, ZERO... AH, THIS SEEMS FAR ENOUGH SO I WON’T BE HARMED BY THE EXPLOSION. LET’S BEGIN THE COUNTDOWN. BOOM BOOM...

INSIDE THE HOUSE, LEIB IS BUSY CLEANING AND ORGANIZING THE FIRST FLOOR…

WHAT’S THAT? DID SOMEONE ENTER THE HOUSE? PRIVYET (HELLO)? OH, THEY DON’T SPEAK RUSSIAN HERE...

WHO ARE YOU? WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?! ALLO! IS ANYONE HOME?

ALLO!!!

YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN YOUR FACE!

AGGHH! THREE... WHAT COMES AFTER THREE? OOPS, I GOT CONFUSED AGAIN. TO BE CONTINUED...
