YOUR 12 YEAR OLD CAN’T READ THIS AD. GIVE US FIVE DAYS AND WE’LL CHANGE THAT

At Mind Orientation, a licensed Davis Dyslexia® center, we’re not afraid of dyslexia. Because we know how to treat it. Our experience with struggling readers has taught us that dyslexia won’t respond to phonic-based reading remediation. In a five-day intensive program, your child will learn the Davis® method, an internationally recognized approach to reading that will empower her to beat dyslexia-triggering stimuli — and finally master literacy. In our transformative program, she’ll become a fluent and confident reader in less time than it takes for the weekend to come around again.

(Re: Boomerang, Issue 214) Your article about scams was important and timely. I wanted to make readers aware of a frightening scam that exists. My brother-in-law was at work when he received a threatening phone call. The caller claimed to have abducted his ten-year-old daughter and demanded he wire thousands of dollars immediately to secure her release. In the background, my brother-in-law could clearly hear his daughter screaming in terror. It was her voice; she was screaming to him to save her. Baruch Hashem, he kept his wits about him and called his daughter’s school. They went to her classroom and confirmed that she was there, safe and sound. It was a scam. Although we hear these stories and think we’d never be pulled in, the technology the scammers use has become very sophisticated. They get recordings of the voices of household members (perhaps when they answer the phone to other calls) and use technology to create these frightening calls. The reflexive panic any parent would naturally feel plays to the scammers’ advantage. Like Yitzy Kasowitz said in your article about security guards, awareness is the first step to protection. May Hashem watch over all of Klal Yisroel. Y.T.

BETTER BREZZA

(Re: So You Have Full Time Help?, Issue 209) Your article on twins recommended the Baby Brezza warm water dispenser as a time-saver and convenience for mothers of multiples (and singletons, of course). I wanted to let your readers know that they produce a similar product that actually mixes the formula into the water for you, saving you another few steps. I could never manage without it! YOUR SAY A CALL FOR HELP

4713 13TH AVE. 718.871.7410 HOURS: SUNDAY-THURSDAY 11:00-7:00 • FRIDAY 11-2

Lately, I’ve been getting many calls from young children collecting tzedakah for important organizations. These calls come in early in the morning, during supper, when I’m trying to put my kids to bed, and even late at night (after 10:30 p.m.). I love to give tzedakah to these wonderful organizations who do so much for the klal, but these intrusive calls by young children are inappropriate. I strongly feel that phone solicitations should be done by adults during business hours. If you are in a position to correct this matter, please help. B.L. PARSHAS VAYECHI I Know, My Son, I Know!

When Yaakov Avinu was about to bless Menashe and Ephraim, Yosef Hatzaddik alerted him that he had placed his right hand on the younger son and his left hand on the older one. Yakov replied, “Yadati b’ni yadati — I know, my son, I know. His younger brother will be greater than him” (Bereishis 48:19). Why didn’t Yaakov go straight to the point and explain his reasoning? Why the extra introduction of “Yadati b’ni yadati”? YAAKOV WANTED to teach Yosef a lesson. When presenting a matter to an adam gadol, people sometimes feel the need to put the answer into the mouth of the gadol, so to speak. They offer examples or ideas, or want to understand the thought process of the gadol, because they don’t recognize that the gadol understands, sees and knows even matters that they themselves do not see. By saying, “I know, my son, I know,” Yakov was telling Yosef, “You don’t need to tell me how to do it. I know, my son. I see beyond what you see.” Moreover, the repetition of “I know” emphasizes Yakov’s intent: I know what you know, and I also know that which you yourself don’t know! Our gedolim are above us. Their way of thinking is above our comprehension, and their vision goes far beyond what we can see. Our place is to accept, with pure emunas chachamim — to listen, follow and believe in their guidance. THE RAV OF LODZ, Poland, Rav Eliyahu Chaim Meisel, zt”l, was once visiting a certain Russian town. It just so happened that while he was there, the town was visited by a high-ranking official in the czar’s government. The official met with the Jewish community leaders, who showed him around the local shul. The man was visibly impressed by the building, but noticed one thing that was missing. “How come there is not a single portrait of the czar?” he admonished. The rav was forced to promise that he would resolve the matter as soon as he could.

The meeting left the rav distraught. How could he possibly fulfill the official’s request? It was completely not in line with the honor or spirit of the shul to hang a picture of their Jew-hating monarch! Yet if the official would return and see that his demand had been disregarded, the welfare of the entire community would be jeopardized. He decided to consult with the Rav of Lodz. Rav Meisel instructed the rav to have a large portrait of the czar designed. “Place it in a fine glass frame, and hang it in a prominent spot in shul,” he said. The rav immediately ordered the picture and had it hung. The communal response was not long in coming. The kehillah members were upset that the rav had caved to the government official’s demands. “Let’s say we had to comply,” they argued, “why does it have to be done in such an overstated manner — much bigger and nicer than what was demanded of us? It’s not kavod for the beis midrash!” The rav tried to placate the people by explaining that he had been following the advice of one of Poland’s most eminent Torah leaders — the Rav of Lodz. Several days later, the official returned to check if the czar’s portrait had been hung yet. He was pleased to see that his command had been followed superbly, and praised the community’s acknowledgement of the czar’s honor. After the official left, the rav went to tell Rav Meisel about the visit. “What do we do next? Should we leave the picture hanging?” he asked. “Send a couple of children into shul with a ball,” was his simple response.

When the people saw children running around in shul, they were really upset, and they directed their anger at the rav. “From where did the rav take a heter to allow playing in a shul?” they asked. It didn’t take long for their angst to die down. Within moments, the ball knocked into the large frame, which toppled to the ground in a large crash. Fragments of glass flew everywhere. This was what Rabbi Meisel had been waiting for. “Now, take the picture to the Jewish glassmaker. Ask him if he minds keeping it in his workshop long term.” He explained, “If the czar or a different high-ranking official will visit one day, we’ll excuse ourselves by telling them that the picture of the czar fell down and is at the glassmaker for repairs.” The glassmaker agreed, and for many years, the picture

frame remained in his workshop. Only after the story had settled did Rabbi Meisel explain his logic. “If we would have tried to explain to the official that it wasn’t appropriate to hang the portrait in the shul, it would have sparked a public storm. Very likely, the Duma would have issued an edict obligating every single shul to hang a picture of the czar. And if we would have ignored the czar’s request entirely, we would have placed ourselves in danger. That left us with little choice but to go through this whole spiel, so that in the end, the picture of the czar would not be left hanging in shul!” This is a portrayal of “yadati b’ni yadati.” There is a lot of depth to the guidance of our chachamim, some of which we may understand and some not. We must simply believe and follow their ways — no suggestions or questions asked.

121 Emmesse Shas Yiden avreichim geonim

Amaze Gedolei Torah

T

he Shas Yiden Kolel network held its 15th Annual Farher & Siyum Hashas for its 121 avreichim geonim at the Pavillion Hall, Yerushalayim. This, a grueling farher (examination) on the entire Shas exceeded all previous farheren, as Shas Yiden has extended its scope and regimen to include all the Tosafos and Rashis, as well as Rishonim and Acharonim and the Talmud Yerushalmi. They answered with the same amazing clarity and acuity, that had, on previous occasions, left Maranan Gedolei Yisroel amazed at their incredible knowledge and recall. Two of the Gedolei Torah of our generation conducted the farher: Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Peretz Berman, Rosh Yeshiva, Ponevez, and Maran Hagaon Harav Bunim Schreiber, Rosh Yeshiva, Nesiv Hadaas, who are known for their sharpness and incredible knowledge throughout

Torah. They were astonished at the incredible knowledge demonstrated by all the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim who have risen to levels of Torah knowledge in a manner that has no precedent. This full-on Shas farher was a culmination of their written tests throughout the year - Monthly on 225 blatt, quarterly on 700 blatt, and annually on the entire Shas. Stipends awarded for the monthly, quarterly and annual tests are calculated in terms of their scores.

Shas Yiden avreichim geonim face a challenging farher

Hagaon Harav Yisroel Bunim Schreber at the farher of the avreichim geonim

They Know Every ‘Nook and Cranny’ in Shas

Each year they display loftier and loftier heights, and their knowledge is even more sharpened and broader than it was in the previous year. So commented Rav Bunim. He had tested the Shas Yiden four years ago. Already, on that occasion, he was taken with their incredible knowledge. Now, he came to examine them a second time. He could not hide his amazement at the exceptional growth of knowledge and the sharpness of the Shas Yiden geonim. Just a few years earlier they had already attained great heights, and now they have overshadowed their previous accomplishments. In his letter to the Pozna Rov, founder of Shas Yiden, after the farher: “…incredible avreichim geonim who know every single place in Shas… clearly and without any hesitation.” Similarly, Rav Chaim

Sitting in front of me are, literally, tens of thousands of bletter gemora. Over 100 emmesse Shas Yiden, outstanding geonim, who know every place in Shas, responded clearly and without any hesitation

- Hagaon Harav Bunim Schreiber, shlit”a

Aside from their amazing knowledge of Shas, the avreichim defended their knowledge throughout Tosafos and Rashi, Rishonim and Acharonim and also the Yerushalmi - it was simply remarkable Hagaon Harav Chaim Peretz Berman, shlit”a

The Shas Yiden annually complete limud of the entire Shas, which reflects every aspect of Torah, and is a shmira for Eretz Yisroel and Yiden everywhere Hagaon Harav Aryeh Leib Shapira, shlit”a

Peretz declared that this was the first time that he came close-up to the incredible knowledge of the Shas Yiden geonim. In his letter after the farher he wrote with great emotion: “I was so amazed to see, aside from their incredible knowledge in Shas, how they defended their knowledge in Tosafos, Rishonim and Acharonim, as well as in the Yerushalmi – it was just amazing”

Chizuk from the Ponevez Mashgiach

The Guest Speaker at the Siyum Hashas was the Ponevez Mashgiach, Hagaon Harav Aryeh Leib Shapira, shlit”a. In a dynamic speech that captivated the audience, he spoke about the unique phenomenon in the Torah world that the Shas Yiden Kollel Network has become. The learning, the regimen and, certainly, the standard it has set has earned it a place of honor in limud Hatorah, so very beloved by the late Nasi, Maran Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Hagadol, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l. He then added that Shas Yiden annually completes

limud of the entire Shas, which reflects every aspect of Torah and is, in fact, a shmira (protection) for Eretz Yisroel and Yiden everywhere. At one point, Rav Shapira turned to the Shas Yiden wives and emphasized: "Each of you should know that in your homes, you are living with a lebedike (living) sefer Torah! Very few and exceptional wives merit this. Ashreichen (Praised are you all)! You ensure that your homes are conducive for such learning and your children follow your stellar examples. The Pozna Rebbetzin presented each of the wives of the Shas Yiden with a gift cash envelope as a token of the deep-felt appreciation of the Shas Yiden Hanhallah.

avreichim realize the direction of the question, and call out the answer - the masechta, the blatt, and the ‫ דיבור המתחיל‬of Tosafos where it is to be found! From time to time, the questions are enigmatically spiced up, such as where and concerning what is there a dispute between Reb Chaim and Reb Chaim? To enable the farher to run smoothly, the avreichim from each of the 5 kollelin in Eretz Yisroel were sitting together and, prior to each question, it is addressed to kollel A or B etc. Even so, all the avreichim of that particular kollel will burst out with the answer. And what about the concept "‫תרי קלי‬ ‫( "לא משתמעי‬two voices answering simultaneously cannot be heard properly? We know ‘that which is preferred, is in fact heard above the others.’ The following question: What are the different shittos (approaches) regarding Kiddush & Havdalah… And the answers are given at a dizzying pace: all mnemonics - "!‫יקנ"ה! ינה"ק! קני”ה! קינ"ה! נקי"ה‬ ‫ !ניה"ק! יקזנ"ה! יקנה"ז‬Don't think that this is a computer memory.

From The Farher – Harav Chaim Peretz Berman

Even before he manages to finish asking a question, the answers come thundering in response, and he looks out at all the avreichim and smiles. In an instant, the amazing

Hagaon Harav Aryeh Leib Shapira, shlit"a, Mashgiach, Ponevez Yeshiva, Guest Speaker at the Siyum Hashas

Not at all. This is also not AI artificial intelligence. Many of the questions require human reasoning, that reasons out in a way that a computer cannot. This is a result of laboring for many years, clarifying and distilling, laboring and reviewing.

From The Farher – Harav Bunim Schreiber

Rav Bunim looked at the avreichim geonim and said: “Sitting here in front of me are literally tens of thousands of ‘bletter of gemora’. He immediately begins raining down sharp and tough questions. He is well-known as someone who inspires young avreichim to study with an orderly program to acquire knowledge throughout the entire Shas. His questions are colorful and unexpected. "What are the 18 items that they decreed?" The answers are like incessant, exploding thunder. And

if one question appears to be very broad, the next is very deep. The avreichim are asked how many approaches are to be found in a particular sugya of the Talmud. To answer correctly and on the turn, one has to quickly take into account no less than eight full blatt. “How many disputes are there between Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel in masechta Beitzah?” The answers begin flowing, but then Rav Bunim interrupts them: "Actually, what difference does it make how many? Rather, what are the disputes between Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel in masechta Beitzah? And again, the answers come gushing forth. What are the 21 items that their Mitzvah applies only in the daytime? What are the differences applying to a mourner, one in ‫חרם‬ (excommunicated), and a leper? How many cases of ‫( מלקות‬lashes) are there? Again, a juicy one - In the Rambam it is noted there are

207. At the conclusion of the farher, it turned out that the number of questions put forward by Rav Bunim, was that of the number of masechtas in Shas - each corresponded to a particular masechta. Moreover, he consulted no notes of his questions – all were committed to memory! And when he descended from the dais, one avreich went over to him and asked for a word of chizuk about life. Rav Bunim responded on the spot, ‘learn and learn – that is the essence of real life!’ To watch the dynamic farheren, or for more information on Shas Yiden, or to donate, click on www. shasyiden.com or call 718-7021528 or Mail: 1274 49th Street #562, Brooklyn, NY 11219. Bomb Threats Made Against 25+ Jewish Targets a Hoax, Says NYPD A mass bomb threat emailed to 27 yeshivas, shuls and other Jewish centers on the morning of December 24 had area residents on high alert, but thankfully, it turned out to be much ado about nothing. The threatening email was sent out at 6:14 a.m. to the White Shul in Far Rockaway, Congregation Shaarei Zion in Gravesend, Congregation Ahavas Chesed in Crown Heights, Kingsway Jewish Center in Flatbush, Mill Basin Hebrew School and Hunter College’s Hillel House in Manhattan, among others.

“I placed explosives inside of your Synagogue,” read the email. “But also inside of every New York Synagogue. The explosives are well hidden and they will go off in a few hours. YOU WILL ALL LAY IN A POOL OF BLOOD.” A statement issued by the NYPD, which responded to several of the targeted locations, said that it is aware of and is “actively investigating” the threats. Police said that the threats were similar to other recent hoaxes, with several New York City synagogues also receiving menacing emails on December 1. While the current threats are not considered credible, extra manpower will be dedicated to shuls citywide. “We will continue to work hand in hand with our law enforcement partners, houses of worship and community leaders to keep New York City safe,” said the NYPD. “We are asking all New Yorkers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.” 68

City Council Approves Bill Banning Background Checks for Prospective Tenants A controversial bill that will prevent landlords from accessing information about most applicants’ criminal histories passed the City Council last week, and is due to go into effect at the start of 2025. The Fair Chance for Housing Act passed the Council by a vote of 39 to 8. Earlier attempts to pass a similar bill completely barring landlords from running any criminal checks were defeated, with this most recent version allowing landlords to reject potential renters because of recent misdemeanor and felony convictions. According to Brooklyn Paper, the law does not apply to twofamily owner-occupied housing or to rooms being rented by owners in their homes. Thirty-one of the council’s 51 members sponsored the bill, aimed at helping what lawmakers called “justice-involved New Yorkers.” “Mistakes made in the past should not translate into a lifelong struggle to find a place to call home, and it’s time our laws reflect that,” said Majority Leader Keith Powers, the lead sponsor of the bill. Councilmember Inna Vernikov, who voted against the bill, described it as part of an “eleventh-hour trilogy of madness,” with multiple pieces of legislation rammed through the Council before the year’s end. One of those bills will require the NYPD to report on all civilian stops, even if they involve low-level interactions, while another will end solitary confinement in city jails. “These bills are detrimental to our public safety, and disrespect cops, corrections officers and everyday New Yorkers,” wrote Vernikov on social media.

Defects Prompt Recalls of Popular Honda and Toyota Minivans, Among Others A pair of recalls issued last week will have 3.5 million Honda, Acura, Toyota and Lexus owners bringing their cars in for service to avoid potential crashes caused by defects in their vehicles’ components. Affected vehicles include 2017–2020 Accord Hybrids, and Pilots; 20187–2020 Accords, Civic coupes, sedans, and Type Rs,

The recall also affects 2017–2020 Acura NSXs and 2018–2020 Acura ILXs, MDXs, MDX Hybrids, RDXs, RLXs and TLXs. Two days later, Toyota announced a recall of its own, affecting over one million vehicles and spanning multiple models, including certain Lexus vehicles. Both the Toyota and Lexus models that are included in the recall may have faulty front passenger seat sensors that could cause their airbags to deploy incorrectly. All of the recalled vehicles will have their sensors inspected to determine if they are defective. The recall affects 2020–2021 Avalons, 2020–2022 Camrys, 2020–2021 Corollas, 2020–2021 Highlanders, and 2021 RAV4s. Other Toyotas included in the recall are hybrid Avalons, Camrys, Highlanders and RAV4s, manufactured in the same model years listed previously, as well as 2021 Sienna Hybrids. 293 “Special Assistants” to Mayor Earning $24+ Million Annually The ongoing migrant crisis has had Eric Adams making headlines in the past few weeks as he announced cuts to city agencies, but according to a recently released article, the mayor would do well to trim expenses in his own office. According to reports, the Adams administration spent $24.3 million in fiscal year 2023, which ended on June 30, on nearly 300 employees with vague titles. Those employees report only to Adams, and their non-civil service positions gives the mayor the ability to set salaries and award raises without being bound by certain restrictions. Eighty-five of those employees earned six-figure salaries, with thirteen of them paid over $200,000 per year for their work, although what their duties are at City Hall remain unclear. Former mayor Bill de Blasio had a smaller stable of “special assistants” in his inner circle, their salaried positions reportedly used to keep them in the fold until they were needed to run the next political campaign. Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, who ran against Adams in 2021, said that their presence sends a terrible message to city agencies such as the NYPD and FDNY who have had their budget slashed to make funding available to assist the migrants. “He’s got to show he’s cutting his own fat — all these special assistants, advisors that he created for jobs that never existed,” said Sliwa. “It’s time to clean house.” Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis noted 70

that every special assistant that Adams has in City Hall translates to two fewer police officers on the streets of New York. “Whether it’s offering illegal immigrants free housing while cutting services from citizens, or hiring more assistants at City Hall while cutting public safety officers, Mayor Adams is showing his priorities are backward,” said Malliotakis. City Hall spokesperson Charles Lutvack said that the Mayor has done, and will continue to do, whatever necessary to balance his budget and said that fiscal responsibility has been a hallmark of the Adams administration. “Mayor Adams has always hired the right people for the right job, and the public servants in our administration are ‘Getting Stuff Done’ for New Yorkers every day,” said Lutvack.

Passport Renewals Finally Running on Schedule Travelers in need of passports or renewals can heave a sigh of relief. The lengthy delays that have plagued the processing office since the pandemic have finally disappeared. The United States Department of State announced on December 18 that turnaround time for regular passports is now six to eight weeks, with just a two to three week wait time for expedited service. That processing time does not include shipping, and it can take up to two weeks more for passports to be received and returned through the United States Post Office. The demand for passports has grown significantly in recent years, and 48% of Americans have passports now, nearly ten times as many as in 1990. With a record 24 million passport books and cards issued last year alone, the State Department is actively recruiting and hiring more employees to keep up with the increasing demand. Travelers are still encouraged to submit passport applications or renewals as early as possible in order to avoid lastminute travel emergencies.

CHAPTER 37 Mr. Gabioff displays uncharacteristic kindness to Riva. The Eisdorfs dive into an impossible construction deadline.

I

t had taken a bit of ingenuity — okay, and an outright lie — to accomplish the surprise element. Riva had enlisted their aunt Chanie Katz to pull it off. Chanie would tell her parents that they were going to visit their uncle Yishai in his assisted living facility, and urge them to join. “Convince them not to bring their car,” Riva told her. “Tell them it’s impossible to find parking or whatever, and that you’ll pick them up.” Of course, Mrs. Miller had provided ten different excuses why the timing wouldn’t work, but Chanie played her cards perfectly and dismissed each one. Now, Riva stood next to Lani and watched her parents’ confused expressions as they approached the entrance to SpecTac. “Hello? What? Where are we? What — what — what?” her mother asked, clutching her bag to her stomach. Then she noticed Riva. “Oh. Oh!” Riva grinned broadly, and all

the kids burst out of the door. “Surpriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiise!” they shouted. “What — what’s going on, Leah?” Mr. Miller sputtered. “I’m feeling a little old!” “And mazel tov to you, too,” Mrs. Miller responded, laughing. “It’s our fortieth anniversary today, Anshel. That does make us a little old.” She peeked over everyone’s shoulders and took in the beautifully set tables inside, the neat row of pans resting in their chafing dishes over Sternos. “Oh myyyyy, you kids are something else! Wow, wow, wow, I can’t believe it! And look who’s here, the entire Miller and Lipshutz families!” It took over half an hour for everyone to settle down. The kids were in paradise, swiping their unlimited cards at the arcades, while the adults stood around laughing and yakking. Above the noise, Riva heard her mother call out, “Chanie! We owe Uncle Yishai a visit! You little rascal…” The room was set up with two banquet tables. Yaakov and Chaim

Tzvi managed to seat all of the men at their table, and over at the women, Riva observed Lani step into her role as hostess. A hostess who’d forgotten that she was hosting tonight at all, mind you. Lani settled the Lipshutz gang at one end of the table and the Millers at the other. Their mother sat down between Chanie Lipshutz and their father’s sister, Hindy Gordon, who was Chanie’s good friend. That left the two of them. Riva caught Lani looking at her, but when Lani saw her looking, she quickly turned away. Well. Were they going to sit down together — or what? That was the natural thing to do. But things didn’t feel all that natural between them anymore. When was the last time they’d sat at a party together? Other than working on the scrapbook and the paper goods shopping, when was the last time they’d done anything together? Observing all of her cousins sitting with their siblings, talking and eating and arguing and laughing and having a grand time, her heart squeezed. She had one sister, and at that moment, there was nothing she wanted more than to share a close relationship with her. And if initiating was what it took, that’s what she would do. “Nu, Lani,” she said, keeping the initiating as casual as possible. “Let’s get our food and sit down, yeah?” The thankful look on Lani’s face warmed Riva’s heart. She smiled to herself as she loaded her plate with pepper steak and rice. Riva filled her own plate with Lani’s pulled beef gnocchi — that she’d finished mak-

ing three hours ago — and Riva smirked to herself at how polite their food choices were. In the end, there was so much seat shuffling throughout the meal that Riva and Lani didn’t even sit together that much. Still, it was nice, pleasant and natural even, and Riva held on to the good vibes. Until their aunt Faigy Miller stopped them. She was holding a plate of food and was shaking her head with incredulity. “The two of you are something else. Your mother sure trained you well. Homemade hot dishes! First-class balabustes.” Riva could barely eke out a thank you. “You need to tell me who made what,” Faigy continued, “so I can compliment the cook. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I’m pretty sure I had some of every single thing. There was nothing I was willing to pass up.” Riva didn’t look at Lani, and she sensed her face reddening. She conjured a quick giggle, and then turned to her sister. “Should we bring out dessert now?” she asked. “Um, yeah. I guess.” Dessert was the only thing they’d ended up ordering. That was a safe place to go to. When they were done serving, Riva brought out the scrapbook, and they went to tear the kids away from their VR headsets. Fraidy tugged at Riva’s arm as they walked back to the ballroom. “I don’t want to read my poems,” she whispered. “Can someone else do it instead of me?” Riva looked at Lani and the rest of the kids anxiously, then pulled Fraidy aside. “Why, Fray? You know the lines by heart.

What are you worried about?” “I can’t do it. I’m scared.” “I won’t force you,” Riva said, “but I think you’ll be very happy if you do it. What do you think?” Fraidy’s shoulders rose tensely. “I don’t know. What if I stutter?” Help. How would Machla deal with this? She would probably lead Fraidy to identify her feelings. Riva forced herself to stay calm. “Are you worried that you’re going to stutter?” “Yes.” “And if you stutter?” “I know, I should just keep reading and tune everyone out.” “Exactly. You’ll be great, Fraidy. Zeidy and Bubby are going to be so happy if you do it.” Fraidy exhaled. “I hope so…” Riva took that as a yes, and they hurried after the Eisdorfs. But as the girls lined up to start the presentation, she found herself quaking. Fraidy was going to read three sets of four-line poems, really not a big deal. But if she was this nervous… Her parents sat down on two chairs between the men and the women’s tables. The crowd fell silent, and all heads turned to see what was happening. Riva walked over and handed a portable mic to Tzippy. The four-year-old beamed. “Happy annivowsowee, Zeidy and Bubby!” she squeaked, all but eating up the mic. Then OZ Eisdorf pulled the scrapbook out of a pretty paper bag and handed it to Bubby. “What is this?” Bubby exclaimed. Riva opened the book to the first page and handed the mic to Malky Eisdorf. Malky read her lines, and everyone clapped loudly. “Sooooooo cute!” Bubby gushed. Shana took the mic from Malky and read the next set of lines with lots of expression. Then she passed the mic to Fraidy. Riva gave her an encouraging smile, and Fraidy started reading. “What country, when country, who needs the pool, “There are way more fun ways to spend the days out of school, “Hop into the car, we’re off to gre—” It happened in a flash. Chevi’s fingers flew up, jolted the mic from 80

the bottom, and disappeared again. Riva, who had been holding her breath and was getting ready to exhale in relief, saw the scrapbook fall out of Fraidy’s hand, her eyes zooming around frantically. Riva leapt forward, but Bubby had already bent down to pick up the book from the floor and handed it back to Fraidy. “Let’s hear the rest, sweetie,” Bubby said. “That’s such a great poem!” With shaky hands, Fraidy turned the page to where she’d been reading. “H-h-hop in the c-c-car, we’re —” “W-w-w-w-we’re, you mean?” Chevi was standing right behind Fraidy, and her muttering was so low, Riva was sure she’d imagined it. But she hadn’t. Fraidy swiftly turned her head, her mouth hanging open as she stared at Chevi. And before anyone could grasp what was happening, she dropped the mic and the scrapbook on the floor, and bolted. *****

Lani was watching the scrapbook presentation with double vision; through her own eyes and through her camera’s screen. It was through the camera’s screen that her brain detected trouble. Everything had been going smoothly until the mic fell out of Fraidy’s hand. After that, she heard Fraidy stutter, and a second later, she dropped everything and ran. Lani turned the camera off and her eyes circled the room. What just happened? “I’m glad you got that down.” Riva’s voice was frigid. “That should serve as your evidence.” “Evidence? What are you talking about?” Riva didn’t answer, but scanned the room instead. “Where did she go?” Lani searched her surroundings. “I think she left,” she told Riva. “The door just closed.” The abrasiveness left Riva’s face, worry rising in its place. She squeezed past the crowd and sprinted towards the door. Lani hesitated for a moment, then made the impulsive decision to follow her. As she pulled open the door, someone tapped her back. Lani jerked her head and took in Chevi’s frightened face. 82

“Ma,” she said urgently, “can I have your camera?” *****

She wasn’t in the hallway. She wasn’t in the restroom area. She wasn’t anywhere that Riva had checked. SpecTac occupied a double suite on the first floor of a large building. There was an elevator leading to all other stories, and countless doors leading to who knew where. Most doors were locked. Where was Fraidy hiding? “I think we should send people to look around on other floors.” Lani. Heat rushed to Riva face, and her mind filled with biting remarks for her sister. She’d have it out with her later, but she had to find Fraidy first. She had no choice but to grudgingly accepted Lani’s help. “Where do we start?” “I think you should stay on this floor,” Lani suggested. “She might come out from wherever she’s hiding. I’ll go back in and get some of the adults to help us look for her. Maybe I should send the kids back to the arcades so they don’t get worried.” Wait, did they need to worry? With a search team mobilized, Fraidy’s disappearance was growing truly worrisome. A half an hour later, after a crew of searchers combed the building and there was still no sign of Fraidy, the worry turned to alarm. What now? Call Shomrim? What would she tell them, that her daughter had been publicly humiliated and rightfully ran off to lick her wounds? “Where’s Yaakov?” she asked the people around her. Nobody remembered seeing him recently. Riva inhaled. “Where’s my phone?” It wasn’t in her bag. Why was everyone and everything disappearing on her tonight? “Here,” Chayala Lipshutz said. “It was hanging from your stroller.” Riva flipped the phone open to dial Yaakov, only to discover eight missed calls from him. But when she called him back — once, twice, again — her call went to voicemail. TO BE CONTINUED…

1

cup fresh spinach leaves

½

cup cherry tomatoes, halved

8

1

tsp. sugar

tsp. salt

½

tsp. black pepper

1

(28 oz.) can diced tomatoes

½

cup shredded Parmesan cheese

D IR EC T I O N S 1. To prepare the sauce, heat the oil in a medium-size saucepan. Add the diced onion and crushed garlic, and sauté until the onions are translucent and the garlic is fragrant. 2. Add the basil, mint and oregano. 3. Add the sugar, salt and black pepper. Keep mixing until the herbs are fragrant. 4. Add the diced tomatoes. Cover the pot and bring to a boil. 5. Lower the flame, and add the cheese. Keep mixing until the cheese is fully melted. 6. Remove the pot from the flame, and add the butter, which will make it super creamy and smooth. 7. Heat the pizza stone in the oven on 450° for half an hour. 8. Roll out the dough into a 16-inch circle. 9. Arrange fresh spinach leaves on all the slices, along with the cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, goat cheese and mozzarella cheese. 12. Roll each slice upward, and tuck under so the pizza dough becomes an open circle, like a wreath. 13. Bake at 450° for 25 to 30 minutes. 14. Serve the pie with warm marinara dipping sauce placed in the center.

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF PICTURE BOOK PUBLISHING ESTHER MALKY NEIMAN

A

t a simcha a few years ago, a relative asked me an unexpected question: “Do you have a dream?” I was stumped at first. A dream? Of course, just like any other mother out there, I dreamed then and still dream now of continuing to raise my growing family. But that’s not what

she meant. She meant a small, patient dream that belonged to me, and only to me. Suddenly I knew what it was. “Yes,” I said. “I do. I’d love to publish a picture book.”

100

With Hashem’s help, my dream has materialized into two picture books titled The Shrinking Wuzzy (Israel Book Shop Publications, 2023) and Catch the Tantrum (Menucha Publishers, 2024). Here is the backstory of both.

THE BEGINNING OF ANY STORY IS…

THE KERNEL OF THE STORY…

Not “once upon a time.” And not the kernel of the story, either. It generally starts with the sting of rejection. The very first picture manuscript I wrote (it featured a boy named Miley Wiley, if you must know) received so many rejections, I lost count. I then sat down and wrote another story featuring the same character, and that one, too, got rejected. With every submission, I braced myself for another letdown. It took vulnerability I didn’t know I had, but I knew that behind every successful project hides a mountain of rookie mistakes and mediocre work. It’s kind of like an iceberg where only the top is on display. Because no matter the industry or field, we all start somewhere. And so, I still held on to my dream. I wanted to write a picture book. But I didn’t want to write a book that would only be a vehicle for a moral or a lesson; I wanted to tickle the imagination. I wanted to create colorful characters. I wanted to craft unexpected storylines. I wanted pint-sized readers to wish the story went on forever. Most of all, I wanted children swept away to the land of impossibility.

For The Shrinking Wuzzy, it all came together when I bought a much-too-large throw blanket for our leather three-seater couch. “Only $24.99 for so much cozy,” I thought to myself. “What a steal!” I changed my mind very quickly, around the time I wanted to wash it and found that it filled my machine to the brim and I was scared it would break down (the machine, not the blanket). But it did turn my couch into a super cozy haven, and it was so large that it covered the whole thing at once, from one armrest to the other. But it wasn’t quite large enough for my kids. One morning found little kids in varying stages of rumpled pajamas and tousled hair fighting over the blanket. This one pulled it to the right, the next one yanked it to the left, and they all refused to hear the simple logic: The blanket was large enough to cover the whole couch. In my head, I had a sudden vision of the blanket shrinking with each yank. It would serve the kids right, I thought. And then, just as suddenly, I realized that this was a perfect premise for a picture book. “Phooey!” I heard myself say, and then, of course, the character’s name had to be Shuey. As it turned out, that blanket was the best $24.99 I ever spent.

WHY DO WE WRITE? Some people experience the thrill of creation when producing a pretty tablescape, others get that feeling of being “filled up” when glazing a perfect chocolate log, and yet others feel that sense of contentment when using a deft pen to design cards, posters and mitzvah notes. I get that sense of satisfaction when spinning tales for readers young and old. Readers may find this surprising. Don’t writers write for the money? Or for name recognition? In general, the answers are no and no. Like it or not, there isn’t that much money to be made in the Jewish book industry, especially in terms of fiction; the pool of readers is too small. And if writers would write simply to see their name in print, pen names wouldn’t be a thing. So why do we write stories? I write stories because nothing makes my heart sing like watching children smile to themselves while reading a story I wrote, or hearing adults get emotionally involved in a story that, with mounds of siyata d’Shmaya, was crafted from a tiny snippet of a half-baked thought.

While the blanket itself is hardly in use, it left me with the inspiration for a very special Wuzzy.

But poor, sad Wuzzy wanted to be shared! Wuzzy gave a teeny-tiny sigh and suddenly became much, much smaller. “Phooey!” said Shuey. “Wuzzy shrank!” – The Shrinking Wuzzy Unsurprisingly, children are a great inspiration for children’s books. Catch the Tantrum came together on a day the kids all seemed to be vying for the label of tantrum master. As one child after the next did their best to throw the tantrum of the century, it was like this monster of a tantrum was hovering over all of their heads, and from

there, it didn’t take much to turn it into a story. Because if you can throw a tantrum, you can catch it — and then watch it go pop.

“Let’s pop it!” said Gavi. “Let’s pop it!” said Zevi. “Let’s pop it!” said Dovi. “Let’s pop it!” said Huvi. And that’s exactly what the Levy children did. – Catch the Tantrum

WHEN CRAFTING CHARACTERS… The names were crucial. In my books, I stuck with twosyllable names so the repetition wouldn’t affect the rhythm. And they all sound similar, but not confusingly so, in order to up the fun factor of the read.

The Scheiners loved Shuey’s idea. Shimmy and Shalom and Shaina helped Shuey turn his huge Wuzzy into many smaller Wuzzies. – The Shrinking Wuzzy Also, the characters couldn’t be perfectly well-behaved. Which child is? It’s no fun to read about children who follow all the rules and toe all the lines.

THE NEXT STEP WAS… Writing the story. Since I prefer smooth rhythm to potentially forced rhyme, there wasn’t much speculation over which way to go. Picture books take only a few sittings to write, but many sittings to perfect. The rhythm has to be seamless, the consistency flawless, the repetition effortless. Why repetition? Because then the book is fun to read with kids as young as two or three years of age, and the early reader, too, gets that thrill of easily getting through another line. Such writing gives purpose to the terms taught in language arts class. Alliteration, consonance, internal rhyme, strong rhythm patterns — these are all great tools that make the text sing. A good book should be a joy to read, both for the adult reading it (at least the first few times, when it’s read on repeat) and for the child.

ONCE THE MANUSCRIPT WAS THE BEST I COULD GET IT TO BE… I sent it to a publisher for review. In the world of publishing, it’s against industry etiquette to submit a story to multiple publishers at once. Instead, a manuscript gets sent to one publisher, and if the first publisher turns it down, that’s when it gets sent to a second. This process is more time-consuming and nerve-wracking than you’d think since most publishers have a turnaround time of a few weeks. It can get a bit tiring to wait for a reply — only to see a rejection a few weeks later. Therefore, until the lucky day arrives, the best way to play this is to hit send and then try to forget the manuscript exists until a reply comes. Once a manuscript is accepted, the publisher decides when it will be released (generally Elul, Kislev or Adar), and in the meantime, it gets edited, illustrated (if the book under question is a picture book), and designed.

AYE OR NAY Q&A with Esther Heller, acquisitions editor at Menucha Publishers

How many picture book submissions do you get on a regular basis? And do you receive pitches, or are they complete manuscripts?

THE ULTIMATE

BOOKSTORE DESTINATION

We get many picture book submissions every week, many more than we could possibly ever publish. And we get more manuscripts than pitches. I really do need to see a manuscript in order to make a decision.

Do you, in general, immediately know whether a book is a keeper or not, or are decisions more complex than that? I often know right away if I want to accept a manuscript or not. There can be many possible reasons for rejecting a manuscript. Sometimes the content isn’t what we are looking for. Sometimes the language and content isn’t appropriate for the age level. Sometimes the theme is one we’ve done before. As an example, we once received a submission about a boy who was too short to reach the mezuzah. The end of the book has a clever resolution. (Yitzy Aims High by Ann Koffsky.) A while later, we received a submission about a boy who was shorter than all of the other boys. (Shorty Shwartz by Dishy Shiffman). Then, later still, we received another manuscript with the same theme — a boy who was short. At that point I had to reject the manuscript. I felt there was a limit to how many times we wanted to explore the same theme. With Catch the Tantrum, I actually hesitated for a moment because we had just released a book about controlling anger (Menucha for Menucha by Yael Walfish). But since one book was about a girl and another about mostly boys, we decided to go ahead. Other times I’m not sure about a manuscript and it takes me a while to come to a decision.

Do you match illustrators to stories or authors, or does the illustrator choice depend more on availability? We try very hard to find the right illustrator for each project. Sometimes we will wait to start working on a book until a specific illustrator is available.

NAOMI LEVENSPIL

When my kids were small and I felt overwhelmed, my mother used to point out that although I may have been diapering, dressing, and feeding two babies — all day — by the time I would have a third, the oldest would have graduated to doing some of those things on her own. (Now, at fifteen, she does indeed feed herself, baruch Hashem.)

I also remember my mother encouraging me through the tedium of those very long early days. “You’ll see,” she would say, “with each new milestone they also get happier and can entertain themselves more. And wait till they learn to read… then they can really entertain themselves!” While my mother herself didn’t generally play with or entertain us, she did make a big effort to read to us, and all of us grew into avid readers. Perhaps no skill is as gamechanging and rewarding as independent reading. When children transform from hesitant, halting readers into strong, confident ones, it’s incredible to witness the world literally open up before their eyes. But it turns out that, unlike other skills that children learn to do on their own and you no longer have to do for them, you should never stop reading aloud to your kids! Writing this article has been validating to me as a mom who still reads aloud to her high school kids. Lest you get a complex from my awesome parenting (go right ahead!), know that we

Naomi:

Simi:

I have a large collection of picture books, and every week or two I select a small pile for each of my kids. I try to choose some books that they’ll for sure like — fun, easy reads — and I also take some that they wouldn’t necessarily choose on their own. Every evening, each of my little girls gets to choose one book from the bin I’ve curated for them, and I read that aloud during dinner. You can do this with library books as well.

have been on the same book now for over a year — our worst track record to date. I read to them only when all of my older kids are available at the same time, and usually only when the younger kids are asleep, and the confluence of these events becomes rarer as the kids grow older and the family grows larger. In our family, it’s practically yehareg v’al yaavor for anyone else to ever take a turn reading aloud from The Book (although

when I am already reading and get interrupted, I have been known on extremely rare occasions to delegate a small section to my husband) and even more so for anyone to read ahead. It’s slow going, but it’s worth it!

How To Read Aloud While I enjoyed the feeling of validation (I have teenagers, so validation is a rare experience for me), this readership deserves more than my intuition. I reached out to Dr. Esti Hellmann, of Clifton, NJ, for her professional pointers. Dr. Hellman holds a PhD in educational psychology, has performed extensive research in the field of literacy, and has taught teachers and college students how to engage readers at all levels. Dr. Hellmann corroborated something that I have been doing instinctively when choosing a book. For our family read-aloud, I always choose a book that is slightly above my kids’ collective average reading level, and in an interesting genre that they are not likely to pick up on their own. That way, in addition to creating a culture of read-

Any true bibliophile can relate to the musty bookstore smell, the stacks of books that manage to be organized and haphazard at the same time, the cramped aisles, and the pure magic of the experience. We spent a while browsing and then returned home to enjoy our treasures.

Bracha:

I choose books that I personally like because that makes me more likely to read them aloud. I read a lot of books to my younger kids in song and do hand motions along with them — even for books that are not meant to be sung. I find that this really draws in younger kids.

ing and providing a warm family experience, I am teaching them concepts and vocabulary that they would not otherwise choose to be exposed to. I also cater this family reading experience to my older kids, since there are already many natural opportunities when I read to my younger kids. Added bonus: As a frum and discerning reader, you can covertly censor as you read, with no one the wiser. This has allowed me to read aloud some quality literature that contained a few words that I would not have been comfortable with my kids reading on their own. They never even knew they were there. The bottom line is that while most people already know that reading to kids is highly beneficial, those benefits continue — and grow exponentially — even after your kids can read on their own.

Rivkah:

Which benefits, exactly? Reading aloud expands vocabulary, offering an opportunity to stop and explain new words. Studies show that context alone only mildly supports vocabulary building. Reading aloud exposes kids to vocabulary they might not otherwise access, either because it is above their level or because it is not commonly used in everyday conversation. Bonus: They acquire not only vocabulary, but also its pronunciation. Reading aloud with kids builds their reading comprehension. (Note: This is not phonics, which refers to the ability to read individual words.) Reading aloud to children improves their listening skills. Reading aloud exposes children to new information that they are not likely to access otherwise. Reading aloud creates the ultimate bonding experience, especially when a little down time is called for. Difficult topic to discuss? Reading aloud is a great springboard for all sorts of conversations about emotions and experiences, or just for getting kids to open up and talk. Reading to kids is the best way to build lifelong readers! Kids absolutely love it when someone reads to them, and by doing so we nurture a lifelong love of reading and create a culture of reading in our homes.

We’re all too busy generally, but when I feel that a particular older child needs something extra, I often choose a book and read aloud to them for a few minutes on any evening that I can. This is a win-win in terms of giving them a few quiet moments with me, and teaching them something at the same time.

Zivi:

I’m terrible with reading aloud! Even at bedtime — I’m just too tired for it. But — I always have books lying around, and that alone builds a culture of reading. I find that when there are books lying around, kids will read them. This is true for weaker readers, kids who claim they’re bored but don’t want to do anything about it, and for strong readers who wouldn’t necessarily choose those topics. If the books are around, you’ll find kids’ noses in them. As a mother and homemaker, all the books constantly lying around on every available surface are both a boon and the bane of my existence.

Miriam:

When my kids were younger, people who went to the country didn’t go back and forth like they do today. You went and you stayed. We hired a moving truck to take everything up for a large family for the whole summer — but the first thing I packed every year were the library books. This was before library systems were linked by computer, and you could take out books on summer loan. I went to a few neighborhood libraries with all of our library cards and packed cartons of books. I thought I was doling out the books slowly over the summer, but my kids told me later that they would sneak them all in the first week. Other families used to borrow books from us since nobody else had books in the country. Some of the other mothers used to ask me, “How do you get your kids to read?” The answer is simple: Read to them. It’s a great bonding experience, and they’ll learn to love reading at the same time.

Chani:

I read to my high school aged kids. You’d be surprised at how much they like it and always want to keep going. It’s hard to find the time, but it’s a great experience. It’s calming, grounding and fun. The weeks are busy and we don’t always manage it, but I find shalosh seudos or Motzei Shabbos to be times that are very conducive for reading aloud.

“In a classic case of success breeding success,” Dr. Hellmann explains. “The more that children are exposed to new vocabulary and concepts, the more advanced texts they can read on their own. This in turn exposes them to even higher vocabulary and more advanced

concepts, in a cycle of growth and success that builds on itself. The opposite is, of course, true as well. When children are not exposed to higher-level vocabulary and concepts, they remain limited in what they can read and learn and will ultimately fall behind.”

Now that we’ve established why you should read aloud to your kids, you should know the how, because, yes, even such a simple pleasure has a right way to do it. Hellmann offers many practical tips and pointers on reading aloud to kids.

F O R YO U N G E R R E A D E R S :

What to read?

When?

Aim for a balance between informational books and narratives

Take a book wherever you go. Read to your kids in waiting rooms, on public transportation, or whenever you have a lull in your schedule. Reading during mealtimes provides the added bonus of keeping kids from arguing or throwing food at each other. (There may possibly be personal experience here. I’m not telling.)

Balance teaching the child with not breaking the flow of the book. A rule of thumb here would be no more than three stopping points in any picture book. A stopping point might be defining a word or discussing the information in the book. Generally speaking, books designed for early readers to read on their own are not good choices for reading aloud; they’re designed to be easy to read, and not necessarily interesting or educational for the targeted age group. When reading aloud to your kids, choose something that will hold their interest. For kids up to around three and a half to four years old, a good rule of thumb is to choose books with about two lines of text per page. Many classic picture books geared toward younger children often use difficult vocabulary and complex sentence structure. While your favorite oldies may elicit pleasant nostalgia, be sure that they are truly appropriate for your child’s reading level.

How?

The mechanics of reading aloud make a big difference in the experience. While it’s obviously impossible to demonstrate great technique in an article, things like inflection, pauses, expression and modulating your voice make a big difference.

Rifki:

My mother simply loves reading, and she instilled a passion for reading in all of us. Whenever she read something especially beautiful, she would save it to share with us. She reveled in an exquisitely crafted paragraph, and she would read us excerpts from her own reading even when they were beyond our comprehension. We may not have understood the words but her joy was contagious. I still remember her pointing out an excerpt from Helen Keller, and her amazement that somebody with so many disabilities used such rich and descriptive language. We had a small kitchen, but

after supper we would all sit around in a circle on the floor in front of the refrigerator, and she would read to us. We segued from books targeting younger readers to more advanced books, and I still know some of them almost by heart. And the way she read was breathtaking. She used so much expression and voice that she was almost acting out the books. We would roar with laughter! Books came on every trip, including our summer trips to New Hampshire. They were just a part of every day and every experience. The reading came alive for us through her, and to this day, we have such an appreciation for the written word.

Not all picture books are created equal. Some picture books are for younger kids, but many are more complex and are great for older kids — even though they are picture books. If your goal is to create an engaging and warm bonding experience, read something on your children’s level on a topic they enjoy. If your goal is to advance their level, introduce a higher level text that they wouldn’t normally read. To engage a hesitant or struggling reader, reading aloud the first book in a series will often motivate them to read further on their own.

Was it a good thing or bad thing? Eventually I learned what an askan means, but not because I was told. Klal work was something that was always done, but not spoken about. When you work for the klal, a knock at the door in the middle of a Shabbos seudah is a frequent occurrence, nights often don’t start at all, and life is always full of surprise interruptions. Devoting yourself to the klal is like

being reshus harabim. Family time is lost, privacy is not usually an option, and it’s hard to find a peaceful moment. The phones ring, people come to the house, and the appearance of an askan in a public place will usually attract at least a person or two. As a daughter, sister and wife of those dedicated to klal work, I could write a book about it. I know that behind every event and klal decision, there are people dedicating hours and energy and sacrificing their sleep and even their health for it. I also know that even the family members of askanim trade privacy, convenience and routine for a greater cause. It’s a good thing those who are klal doers don’t do it for the credit, because they don’t really get any. Askanim often become the punching bags when

people are upset with how things turn out. People can be quick to pounce on what doesn’t seem right to them, without really stopping to recognize that someone is devoting their time, their money and their very selves just to be there for the community. And that they are trying hard to get it right, but it’s not possible to please everyone all of the time... My husband puts it like this: “When I get criticized, I take it as a sign that

“WHAT GREATER PROMISE CAN ONE HAVE THAN HASHEM SAYING, ‘IF YOU MAKE MINE [MY CHILDREN] HAPPY, I WILL MAKE YOURS HAPPY?’ If I could write a book for the spouses of askanim. I would tell them: • I try to keep in mind that resources we expend for the klal are resources that are ours to keep forever. Time flies, money disappears, energy waxes and wanes, but what’s spent for others remains on our account forever. • It’s sometimes hard not to compare yourself to others who seem to be coping better or accomplishing more, but remember that if your spouse is unavailable for hours or days on end, you do have more to carry on your own. Cut corners, take help, and be kind to yourself. • When you are told, “Wow, you’re so amazing that you let your husband do all this!” it’s not necessarily a time to be honest (“What makes you think I have a choice?”). Just smile and say thank you.

I’m accomplishing things. The only people who don’t get criticized are the ones not doing anything.” Often, askanim are the target of suspicion. I wonder what he gets out of this. Does he do it for status? Fame? Money? Someone I know was fundraising to cover a crucial community need, frequently dipping into his own pocket to fund the project, only to learn that people assumed that he earns a percentage of the money he solicits. It was a humbling moment. But in fact, klal work never goes unpaid. An askan once expressed concern to the previous Skulener Rebbe, zt’’l. He was so tied down to his work for the klal, he was afraid his children would lose out due to his lack of constant involvement in their chinuch. “It says, ‘Im atah sameich es sheli, ani samei’ach es shelcha,’” the Rebbe reminded him. “What greater promise can one have than Hashem saying, ‘If you make mine [my children] happy, I will make yours happy?’ And who can do this better?” the Rebbe added. The most heartwarming piece of askanadvice I’ve ever heard relates to the bracha we always give those who devote their lives for the needs of the tzibbur: “Kol mi she’oskim betzarchei tzibbur, Hakadosh Baruch Hu yeshalam s’charam.” Why does it specifically mention Hakadosh Baruch Hu? Because He is the only one Who really knows what a person does behind the scenes. What they sacrifice. What it costs them financially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. Only He can repay them, because no one else knows what it means to work for the klal.

I could write a book about… getting rid of lice

NITPICKING GOLDY SWIMER

I’d always wondered why makas kinim was so terrible. I mean, yeah, lice are awful, but when compared to boils, fire-breathing hail, and a swarm of fierce predatory animals, lice seemed to be the more benign of the plagues. Boy, was I wrong. When we returned from a beautiful summer in the Catskills this past summer, we hoped to bring a slice of summer home with us. But along with the memories, suntans and raucous cheering, something else hopped along for an extended stay: lice. May I mention that my three daughters have beautiful, thick, wavy brown hair? I’d spent the summer weaving those long tresses into tight corn braids to keep little critters at bay. I loved their long hair, and my girls loved collecting compliments. Apparently, the lice loved my girls’ hair too. The first productive thing I did was panic. Yom Tov was perilously close, and school was about to begin. So along with squeezing in shoe shopping and braving the hordes in the uniform store, I set about my new pastime: Nitpicking. Did you know the Egyptians had it easier than I did? Because after seven days they were done.

Whereas after two weeks of combing, I was back at square one. It was a real head-scratcher. It was driving me buggy. I sat for hours. I purchased Pantene conditioner by the case. We went through two nit combs, too many music videos, and altogether too much nosh. I begged, threatened, pleaded and cajoled. Needless to say, the kids were not pleased. Oh, and chocolate. And takeout. Lots and lots of takeout. I didn’t know lice could be such a financial drain. Between supporting Schmerlings, Proctor and Gamble, and the local deli, we were slowly going bankrupt. But the critters kept coming. As many as I pulled out, an equal number took root and multiplied. I was on a manic mission, frantically combing, shampooing, searching, all to the tune of Rosh Hashanah songs. It was the perfect kapparah before the new year. Did I mention that I had a pre-upsherin toddler, with a devilish curly top? Guess what? He was infested too. “What happens if I give them all a buzz cut?” I asked my husband one night, totally serious. He looked thoughtful. “Well, maybe we can make the upsherin early,” he replied. Oh, sure, people had advice. Vinegar. Tea tree oil. Nix. This comb. That product. But alas, the results were, excuse the terrible pun, very lousy. Finally, I was connected with a Mrs. Schwartz, the Slayer of the Creepy Crawlies. She taught me the one and only method of checking, and guess what? Eventually, with lots of checking and rechecking, hair by painful hair, we began, er, crawling out of it.

Although I try not to think too much about that time, I could write a book about getting rid of lice. Here’s what it would say: • Keep calm. A lice infestation is not your fault and is not a reflection of your balubusta skills. • Keep calm and keep combing: Combing the hair, section by section, is the only way to get rid of the lice and nits. Shampoo hair lavishly with Pantene conditioner (and no other brand), and use either the Nisska comb or the Nit Free comb. Tea tree oil can be helpful too. • Keep calm and eat chocolate. Or takeout. Or get cleaning help. Use any method of self-care, because you will need it! • Keep calm and keep praying. Ask Hashem to send the lice back where they came from. I have no idea what finally made them go away, save for a mother’s increasingly frantic prayers. And if I so much as see another nit in anyone’s hair, I’m making good on that buzz cut.

I could write a book about… supporting a friend who is seriously ill

HERE FOR YOU

When I walked in, she hugged me and shrieked, “Can you believe it?” Twenty years later, when Bashie was diagnosed with cancer, I was the first one she called. I was sitting in the dentist’s chair when SIMA PERKOWSKI I heard; blindly, I got up and drove to her house. Her husband was pacing the sidewalk outside and crying. I called When Bashie got engaged, I was her and she came out to the car. All she the first one she called. As her best could say was, “Can you believe it?” friend, I had been privy to the details In those first crazy weeks, she reof her shidduch, lent her pretty acces- ported to me as each test result came sories, and helped set up the l’chaim. in, what each doctor (there were

many) advised, and what she needed to get through each day. I was the one she called when her numbers fell, I was the one she called when her hair fell out, I was the one her husband called when she was falling apart. I accompanied her to chemo, I visited her in the hospital, and chasdei Hashem, I attended the seudas hodaah when she recovered. For over a year, I had an excruciatingly intimate view of the experience of a cancer patient. But as an outsider, I also could see the other side — the view of the people around her. One of the things I saw was the way other people reacted, what they did and didn’t do, and how it helped (or not). By the time the roller coaster ride ended, I felt like I could write a book about supporting someone in crisis.

This is what I learned: • “Being there” means actually, physically being there. A cancer patient feels totally alone. They don’t know what to do, where to go and whom to turn to in these most vulnerable and dangerous weeks in their lives. They look around and see everyone living normal lives while their life has been hijacked by this huge scary thing. Lots of people said “I’m here for you,” and they meant it, but they didn’t know how to “be there.” The actual physical presence of other people can be enormously comforting and provide a sense of anchor. When they’re not alone, they’re not alone. • Don’t do nothing. You can’t always be there physically. Maybe you can never be there physically. You don’t know what to do, and you can’t cure the patient or solve the problem. But don’t do nothing. Do something, even if it’s just a small thing. I have another friend whose child is a cancer survivor. One day, when Bashie was so sick, overwhelmed and lost, I dropped off some grocery items her family needed and told this other friend how frustrated I felt that I couldn’t do more than this tiny drop in the

bucket. She replied, “Just remember, when you’re very thirsty, every drop makes a big difference.” Every action you take has two benefits: the actual help you provide, and the emotional support it gives the patient. • What’s the right thing to do? The tough truth is that there’s no real way to know. But here’s a rule of thumb: Do things that match your level of relationship. If your pre-diagnosis relationship was limited to texting, then by all means, text the patient. But if you used to shmooze daily on the phone, a text is not enough. Don’t disappear on the patient in their most vulnerable moment just because you feel like you don’t know what to say. Exception: when you possess expertise in an area the patient really needs. It was important to Bashie that she look “normal” and not “sick,” and for that she really needed the help of her sheitelmacher. Although their relationship had previously been businesslike and superficial, it was totally appropriate for her sheitelmacher to step up and become involved.

Of course, all this is based on my personal experience. Everyone is different, and every moment is different. Ultimately, it’s impossible to know what might be the “right” thing to do or say. But I believe that if you tune in to the patient, and give with your whole heart, they will know that you meant well and that you love them and are with them, and they won’t feel alone. And that is the greatest form of support you can give. 132

I could write a book about… cooking pure

HOMEMADE MALKA KATZMAN

I remember the day my sister called me a chef. It made me laugh. I’m not an official chef with a white hat; I’m more of a self-made chef. I generally don’t follow standard recipes or techniques, and that’s mostly because I almost never use processed ingredients. You might be rolling your eyes at that statement. No, I don’t grind my own flour or cook down tomatoes for a week to make tomato paste. But I do almost exclusively use ingredients that are pure, which means they are made of one ingredient, or at most two or three. I aim to use food in its most basic form, without numerous letters or numbers in the ingredient list. It’s hard for me to pinpoint when this started; it evolved over time. The voracious reader in me was becoming convinced about the importance of healthy food habits, and the economist in me was trying to fit my life into a tight budget. I began making my own bread after my eldest daughter was born. While recuperating after birth at my parents’ house, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my husband enjoyed the whole-wheat bread my mother baked in her bread machine. I began buying whole wheat flour by the case, and my baking career began. I discovered I loved baking, and that I loved eating my own bread and rolls even more. And that’s a double-edged sword, because once you bake your own bread, there’s no going back. Storebought bread was an emergency backup.

Baking bread gets a bad name for being timeconsuming, but I don’t find that to be true. I make a big batch of dough about once a week, and I prepare all sorts of rolls, bread, pitas, and gourmet focaccias for a fraction of the price of sliced white bread. As time went on, my tastebuds became more sensitive to the additives in processed food. Over time, I dropped wafers, soup nuts, mayonnaise, and ketchup from my shopping list. Baking cookies is a weekly activity. I make ketchup by mixing tomato paste, water, vinegar, honey and salt. I serve plain yogurt sprinkled with nuts, oats, vanilla sugar or honey, or fresh or dried fruit. I usually make oil-based salad dressings, but if I want the creamy kind, I’ll use a hand blender to make mayonnaise. For dairy dressings, sour cream is a great base. One of the joys in my life is my recipe album. I have a large photo album divided into sections, and I insert my favorite recipes in the photo envelopes. The album is a painstaking collection of great recipes with simple ingredients. It holds some of the greatest secrets in the universe — like how to make caramel with milk, sugar and baking soda; pizza crust out of flour, sour cream and baking powder; and other such goodies. But anything that is time-consuming is not in my book. I won’t create my own chili sauce, but I’ll coat salmon in a mixture of date syrup, chili flakes and garlic — and voila, chili salmon is in the oven. I’ll bake chicken with apricots, ginger and honey, and there you have chicken in duck sauce. Pure cooking is a journey. There has been lots of trial and error, and more flops and disappointments than successes. I’ve never given up, and truth to tell, sometimes even I am exasperated at my own determination to go for it all the way. By now I could write a book about it.

Here are some of my tips: • Stock up on spices — pure spices. Instead of using spice blends that contain additives, personalize every dish by using the spice combination of your choice. • Challah baking is an experience. There’s nothing quite like the exhilaration of seeing your own two golden loaves on the Shabbos table. If the braiding time is what’s holding you back, teach your daughters the technique, and they’ll be proud to do it for you. • Tomato paste is a good substitute for ketchup in many recipes, sometimes with the addition of honey or date syrup. • Nosh doesn’t only come in crinkly bags. Try swapping candy for peanuts, dried fruit or chocolate.

ences with the world — and especially with his own kin — our family embarked on a project to eternalize them in a book for our T. GESTETNER family. This turned out to be the first of several such “family books” I was Growing up, I could picture in my involved in creating. mind’s eye the sleeping forms of my Family memoirs aren’t written for grandfather’s little brothers as he kissed fame, money or to find their place on them a final goodbye, never to see them library shelves; they’re keepsakes for again. that each one is a treasure to cherish for many years to come. “My father may not have been the gadol hador,” Mrs. F. told me when we discussed creating a book for her family, “but to us, he was the guiding light and our connection to the past.” Her dream was to create a tangible memory of her father’s middos and stories for her children and grandchildren, which is why the family chose to self-publish a limited edition just for family members. After the project was completed, Mrs. F. shared it with some friends and acquaintances outside the family. When she reported that they were very impressed with the project, I wasn’t surprised. Although it was a very cozy, family-minded collection, sometimes it’s personal books like these that make the most interesting read. Of course, one thing led to another, and by now I’ve done so many that I could write a book about writing a book!

NO TWO END PRODUCTS ARE THE SAME. EVERY FAMILY HAS ITS OWN FLAVOR, AND EVERY FAMILY HAS A DIFFERENT GOAL IN WRITING THEIR BOOK

If you want to create a family memoir, here’s what you need to know: • First, choose your content and style. Some family books tell a story, others follow different formats. Before their grandmother’s first yahrtzeit, the G. family compiled an informal collection of letters and recipes. They asked every child and grandchild to write up their memories, and the result was a friendly yet full picture of the young bubby who had captured the hearts of her family before her untimely passing. It was cute to see how Bubby G. was perceived differently by descendants of different ages and positions in the family, and that her inimitable character came across all the same. The older ones reminisced about the times they moved in to her home when their mother had a baby, while the younger ones remembered the dining room crammed with cousins at shalosh seudos — and all of them remembered her golden heart, vitality, and trademark apple strudel! This style avoids the challenge of satisfying every family member’s outlook of the person being memorialized. A person is much larger than life. Is it possible to squeeze him between the covers of a book? Probably not. The nefesh of a person is great, and capturing every aspect poses an insurmountable feat. Moreover, we all perceive, connect, and relate to one another differently, so what one grandchild might think is an apt description of Zeidy might not do justice to another’s memories. Another suggestion is to minimize the descriptions and focus more on relevant documents and photos. Some families are lucky enough to have recordings, or the ability to interview the individual, and publish the word-for-

word transcripts for a more autobiographical slant. Some families, especially when printing a lashon kodesh or Yiddish language sefer (which, by the way, usually takes on a totally different style than an English book), include a family tree. Personally, my kids found it fascinating to trace their yichus, seeing the names they know in our family designed in a visual manner, and discovering others they never heard of before. Knowing where we come from gives us a sense of belonging, and this connection to the past is very empowering. • It’s not all or none. I find that some of the nicest compilations are simply written pages stapled together or spiral-bound. The point is to create an everlasting memory. Memoirs usually involve a team effort, but one or two team leaders will be needed to get the project off the ground. If no one in your family likes to write, keep the content photo-based, or hire someone outside the family to pull it together for you.

...‫הממממ‬

‫ביסט‬ ‫געווען‬ ?‫נעכטען‬

• Don’t delay. “Writing down the memories is a big nechamah to family members after a loss,” says a friend, whose family had the privilege of printing their own book. “When we wrote down the things my father would have said or done, we felt we were holding onto something concrete. We immortalized his memory, and that was very comforting.” When writing after a family member is no longer with us, it’s worthwhile to do it as close as possible after the petirah, when the memories are much sharper. Everyone is also more interested in contributing at that time, and anxious to hold a copy of the book in their hands.

Some of the books I’ve worked on took months, but the hours invested are totally justified. My advice: Don’t get discouraged. The end result is monumental. You’ll be giving your children the gift of meeting a grandparent or family member they’ve never met, and giving the grandparent the gift of being remembered. My grandfather’s oft-repeated line still rings in my ears: “Don’t forget about the Zeide!” Hopefully, with such tangible memories to hold onto, we won’t.

I could write a book about… Down syndrome

A SPECIAL GIFT TALI EDELSTEIN (CHAYA ROSEN)

Some things are so foreign and so unexpected that when they first show up in your life, you don’t know how to make any sense of them at all. Like Down syndrome. In an instant, those words went from being very distant to terribly close to home. But we rallied, my parents, siblings and I, as we welcomed my baby brother into our life. For my parents, the diagnosis, and Ezra’s subsequent health challenges, were an unexpected surprise. Ezra spent the first few weeks of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit, and while my mother went back and forth to the hospital every day, I stepped up to run the home and care for my siblings.

Most days I even managed to show up in my tenth-grade classroom for part of the day, between dropping the kids off, picking them up, making lunch, doing laundry and grocery shopping, and keeping them entertained all afternoon. Eight days after Ezra finally came home, he had his bris, but our journey was just beginning. For the next two years, he was in and out of the hospital with serious health issues. In between hospitalizations, my mother would take him to therapy — OT, PT and speech. I was my mother’s sidekick and helped with everything. Whether it was on the home front or staying with Ezra in the hospital, coming along to appointments with specialists (we lived in Eretz Yisroel, and I helped with translating any Hebrew my mother found difficult), or taking him to therapy myself, I was right there at her side. We cried together when Ezra was diagnosed with permanent hearing impairment, we relieved each other after shifts in the pediatric ER or in the ward, we talked endlessly about all of the emotions we were struggling with in this brand-new world of special needs and medical challenges, and we took turns giving Ezra his medicines and treatments. In my spare time, when I wasn’t helping with Ezra or the other kids (or studying and doing homework), I developed a new pastime. With a passion bordering on obsession, I researched Down syndrome endlessly. It started with the medical angle, but didn’t stop there. As Ezra grew and developed, I read up voraciously on every aspect of raising a child with Down syndrome. I connected with families from all over the world and

What you should know about Down syndrome: • The correct way to say and write it is Down syndrome, not Down’s syndrome, and with a lowercase “s” for the word syndrome. • It’s considered disrespectful to call children with Down syndrome “Down syndrome kids” or, even worse, “Downies.” They are children who happen to have Down syndrome. • A great way to help a family in crisis is by doing, not offering. Instead of offering a meal, make one and bring it over. They can always freeze it for another day if they have food. Better yet, arrange meals for them. Instead of asking, “Is there anything I can do?”, offer something you know you can handle, whether that’s childcare, grocery shopping, or a hospital visit, if that’s something they would appreciate (we did!). • This might be individual, but we always wanted people to ask us about Ezra and not ignore the fact that we had a new baby with special needs and medical complications. Just hearing “How’s Ezra doing?” meant so much to us. • I feel strongly that knowledge is power, and that by learning so much about DS, I was able to help Ezra exponentially more than we would have been able to otherwise. At a minimum, reading books and connecting to other families dealing with the same diagnosis is important. • If you are the parents of a child with special needs and/or chronic illness, talk to your kids about it. Be open. Be honest. Tell them what’s going on. Trust me, their imagination is much worse than reality. For Ezra’s first twelve hours, I didn’t know he had DS, but my parents did. Realizing that something was wrong, but not having any idea what it was, was torturous. When I heard the diagnosis, I cried with relief, as my imagination had taken me to very frightening places. Each time my parents were open and honest with me, I felt better able to cope. When they tried to protect me or hide things from me, I struggled significantly more.

Continues! learned so much from each of them. I met so many incredible people, all of whom were handling such heavy challenges with grace and courage and sometimes tears. A few years later, I found that mothers of kids with DS started asking me for my opinion or advice, and I was asked to speak at various venues. As part of my mission to help Ezra communicate, I threw myself into learning sign language and learning methods to teach it to him — and he did amazingly. I found myself explaining what we were doing to other families, advocating and dispelling myths (like that learning sign language would delay verbal speech; the opposite is true), and helping Ezra’s speech therapists set up various AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) systems for him to use in addition to his growing sign language vocabulary. During those years, I was also on a teenage quest to understand the hashkafah and meaning behind having a sibling with Down syndrome. That, coupled with my determination to introduce DS in a positive way to brand-new siblings, led me to write my picture book, Our New Special

A FEW YEARS LATER, I FOUND THAT MOTHERS OF KIDS WITH DS STARTED ASKING ME FOR MY OPINION OR ADVICE, AND I WAS ASKED TO SPEAK AT VARIOUS VENUES Baby. It was published by Feldheim when Ezra was four years old and came out in Hebrew a few months later. Some families are still choosing to give their babies with Down syndrome to other families to raise. This is devastating to me. I understand that in some rare and extenuating circumstances, there’s no other choice, but Hashem is the one Who chooses where each baby goes, and He doesn’t make mistakes. About two years ago, I met the mother of a gorgeous baby girl with DS in foster care. She looked at my book, and I saw her trace the pictures with her fingers as she read the words. Then she looked up and said to me, “I didn’t know all of this.” My heart broke for a woman who gave up on the joy of raising her daughter, without having even the basic information available in my book. Once, when Ezra was a baby and was hooked up to oxygen, my mother and I took him to an appointment. Some kids stared at him. I channeled my frustration and spoke up. “You’ve never seen anything like this, right?” I spent a few minutes explaining what they were seeing and how the tubes helped our baby. They listened attentively, and when we finished, they waved and smiled at Ezra. Sometimes it just takes some education and a little love. These days, when I look at my strapping, teenage baby brother, or watch him play with my children, my heart swells. I’m grateful to be his big sister.

ll languages, and especially English, are a melting pot of words from all over the world and are constantly evolving and changing with each generation. Words that are part of our everyday vernacular today might not have even existed a year ago. Here are some interesting words that you may or may not recognize!

PORTMANTEAU Definition: A word that is made by combining words This is often how new words are born. Some portmanteaus you come up with might remain as a joke just within your group of friends, but a few have actually made it to the dictionary: HANGRY:

BRUNCH:

chill + relax

hungry + angry

breakfast + lunch

This word is relatively new and has gained popularity over the past few years. It simply means to relax or to take it easy, although it’s often used in a more sarcastic way, to tell someone who’s getting heated up to “come on, chillax!”

Honestly, we’ve all been there. You’re feeling a little on edge, maybe snapping at the people around you, until you realize that hey, you haven’t eaten anything in a few hours. Have a snack, and boom, you’re not annoyed anymore. Being snappish when you’re hungry is a universal phenomenon.

When you’re eating a late breakfast but an early lunch, drumroll… it’s brunch!

CHILL A X:

YINGLISH The immigration of Yidden to the United States over the past hundred years has caused even Yiddish words to become a part of the English language.

GLITCH:

a minor malfunction This one might surprise you. The English “glitch” is actually derived from the Yiddish glitsh, meaning to slide and fall. Glitch was first used by astronauts and then radio engineers in the sixties (yes, the 1960s; it’s a relatively new word!) as technical jargon to refer to various small problems they encountered. I don’t know about you, but I’m never going to hear “glitch” the same way again.

BAGEL:

a firm doughnut-shaped type of bread traditionally made by boiling and then baking This one is not really that surprising, because let’s be real, bagels are part of our culture. The bagel, both the humblest and mightiest of all breads, comes from the Yiddish word beygl, which is speculated to be derived from the German word böugel, which means “ring” or “bracelet.” Bagels became popular in the United States in the late 19th century when Jewish immigrants brought them over from Europe and started selling them on the streets. They were usually stacked on poles or hung on strings, which is the reason for the hole in the middle. According to a New York Times journalist, “bagel” became accepted as an English word around 1932.

KLUTZ:

a clumsy person Klutz originally comes from the Yiddish word klots, which means “wooden beam.” “Klutz” managed to crawl (rather gracefully, actually) into the English language, and first appeared in print in the United States sometime in the late 1950s. An actor at that time explained the meaning of “klutz” to the Los Angeles Times as “a dancer who dances as good as he can, but instead of just applause, he also gets laughter.”

TRENDING WORDS As language and culture evolve, many words take on new definitions and get used in different ways.

SIKED:

originally “psyched,” or “psyched up”; previously, “psychology” In the 1980s, the term “to psych someone out,” taken from the word “psychology,” meant to fool or trick someone by playing with their mind. The word “psych” alone was also used at the end of a sentence, kind of like “gotcha!” or “just kidding!” After some time, the word started being used as an expression of excitement, as it’s used today. The spelling has also gone through its own changes, as today’s generation will find a way to shorten just about anything, and can be spelled as just “sike.”

LEGIT:

short for legitimate “Legit” is usually used pretty similarly to its original meaning, except it has become a filler word in our everyday vernacular. It can be used either to describe something as being extremely good (“those cookies are legit!”) or, a little closer to its original meaning, as true or genuine (“these cookies are legit good!”) So basically, it can be both the adverb and the adjective (“these cookies are legit legit!”). I can practically hear all mothers and English grammar teachers sigh and roll their eyes, so maybe don’t.

‫פשטא לייוו‬ ‫קורס‬-‫טעלע‬ ‫עסטראציע‬ ‫עג‬ ‫ר אפען ביז‬

SCARRED:

‫מאנטאג‬ ‫שמות‬

to mark with a scar; to become scarred “Scarred” used to just mean getting a scar on your skin after getting hurt, but lately it’s being used to reference emotional scars as well. You might hear the teenage population use it to refer to practically every life event that occurs, since all of them are obviously very scarring, which has been known to confuse a parent or two.

KESHER NAFSHI CELEBRATES 12TH INCREDIBLE WEEKEND OF CHIZUK AT ARMON HOTEL Name nearly every challenge, and one will find an organization that offers support and chizuk to those who are struggling. Cancer. Infertility. Health Challenges. Children with special needs or Down Syndrome. Widows and orphans. Divorcees. And so forth. There is one segment of the population, however, that has been growing steadily in the past few years, but whose needs have mostly been overlooked. This is the sugya of children who are in pain and have left the ‘derech,’ plunging their families, and especially their parents, into a whirlwind of confusion and grief. Being the parent of a struggling child is one of the most painful challenges, and one of the most isolating as well. There are so many questions, so few answers. Trying to figure out where to turn for help and guidance is like groping in the dark. For over a decade, Rabbi Gedalia Miller, himself the parent of a struggling child, has been involved in helping parents struggling with this nisayon, providing advice, guidance, connections, and support. Several years ago, he founded Kesher Nafshi, an organization whose goal is to strengthen the bond between parent and child, and create a community of chizuk to help parents deal with this challenging nisayon. On Shabbos Parshas Mikeitz, the Shabbos just after Chanukah, over 600 parents gath-

ered at the Armon Hotel for the twelfth weekend of chizuk, four days of inspiration with an optional extension from Friday morning to Monday afternoon. The event was headlined by Reb Shimon and Yocheved Russell from Eretz Yisroel, Directors of Training and Development, and two of the foremost experts in this field for over thirty years. World-renowned speakers and presenters included Rav Gershon Schaffell of Chicago, Rav Daniel Kalish of Waterbury, Rabbi Shais Taub, Rav Aron Lopiansky, Rav Yitzchok Schwartz, Rav Moshe Weinberger, Rabbi Dr. Benzion Twerski, Reb Shlomo Usher Tauber, Reb Shloime Ehrlich, Mrs. Devorie Kreiman, Nesanel Nagenblat PhD, Mendi Baron, Sendy Orenstein, Shloime Zimmerman, and so many others. The weekend was filled with incredible moments of inspiration and chizuk, from the tearfilled mi shebeirach during kriyas haTorah, to the moving kumzits on Friday night; the ‘stump the Rabbi’ session to the heartwarming skit played by Mayer Adler, Velvel Feldman and Meilich Braunstein on Motzei Shabbos. Yet it wasn’t just the powerful speeches and practical advice, the opportunity to consult with Rabbonim, professionals and those on the front lines. It wasn’t the upbeat atmosphere and wonderful ambience of an Eli Friedman event. It wasn’t even the women’s ‘banana

boat’ comedy and lively game show. It was the opportunity to spend time with kindred souls who ‘get it.’ For four days and three nights, we connected with some of the most loving, compassionate, sensitive and caring parents one could ever find. These include Rabbonim and Rebbitzins of Shuls, Psychologists and Therapists, secretaries and Teachers, and regular fathers and mothers who are raising children who need us so desperately, who force us to face our deepest doubts and fears. Most of all, they compel us to keep growing, keep reaching deeper within ourselves to find love, compassion, and understanding. This coming Parshas Yisro, the weekend of February 1-4, Kesher Nafshi will be hosting its 13th Shabbos of inspiration, called “Yiddish Geredt,” of Yiddish spoken. This weekend, which will be smaller and more personal, is specifically geared for Chasidishe parents whose first language is Yiddish, and who would benefit from hearing from Yiddishe speaking professionals and parents alike. Come and bask in the glow of a Kesher Nafshi Shabbos, Yiddish geredt. Connect with others, share laughter and tears, and fill your emotional storehouses with strength for the journey ahead. For more information, call Kesher Nafshi at 718.673.2200 or register at Keshernafshi.org.
