(Re: Allergic Reaction, Issue 206) Thank you for such an informative issue on allergies. I’m a new mother, and my baby (my first) is highly allergic. Like the mothers interviewed, he first had eczema, which ended up being due to food allergies. Since food allergies do not run in my family, this is a totally new thing for me, and I’m constantly looking for information and support. Your interview with the mothers of children with allergies was so validating. I felt like they were telling my story. I wanted to add one point: Please think carefully before commenting on other people’s personal health situations. Unsolicited comments and “helpful tips” can be very upsetting. After noticing my baby’s terrible eczema, someone once said to me, ”So what are you doing about it?” I would have liked to tell her, “I sit with folded hands and watch my baby suffer.” (Instead I acted like a grown up and said, “I’m doing everything I need to.”) Another woman who saw my baby gasped and said, “Wow! Is that eczema?” Such comments can be really hurtful. When my baby’s eczema was at its worst, I missed a family Chanukah party for an unrelated reason. But to be honest, I was secretly happy I didn’t have to deal with everyone’s stares and comments. For those who have never had to deal with eczema, thank Hashem for the ability to kiss your baby’s smooth cheek. And know this: We are doing everything we can. We are trying our best. Please don’t judge. Bashy N.

We try harder...

A HUG FROM HASHEM

(Re: Allergic Reaction, Issue 206) I cannot thank you enough for addressing allergies in last week’s issue. I find that if you don’t personally know someone with food allergies, you cannot comprehend the ramifications of bringing foods that contain common allergens to public places like doctor’s offices, city buses, parks and schools. My son suffers from severe allergies, including dairy, wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, split peas and chickpeas. Most of his allergic reactions occur from airborne particles inhaled in public areas. These cause him to go into anaphylactic shock, which we treat immediately with his EpiPen (sometimes two) before rushing to the ER. I beg everyone to please be careful about which foods you serve in public places. Please don’t serve Bamba or peanut butter sandwiches outside your house, and remember to wash your kids hands and faces before bringing them outdoors. I found myself nodding along with the interviewees Miriam and Gitty when I read about their journey — because it’s my journey, too. I would love to get some recipe ideas from Miriam and learn how she uses egg alternatives when baking. Having allergies is a hard nisayon, but I’m so grateful to Hashem for the wide variety of vegan and gluten-free foods available today that makes it possible to keep our children fed and happy. Another cause for gratitude came up when my second son, who is allergic to dairy and wheat, started school. I was really nervous about how the teacher would handle his food allergies, but after hearing about his diet, she told me, “I’m also off wheat and dairy”! It was like a special hug from Hashem. B.P.

PARSHAS CHAYEI SARAH One Hundred Twenty-Seven

The Midrash tells us that Rabi Akiva once tried to grab the attention of his tired audience and asked, “Why did Esther Hamalkah rule over 127 countries?” He then answered that it was because Esther was a granddaughter of Sarah, who lived 127 years. What’s the connection? Sarah’s lifespan was not in her hands. What was so significant about the number of years she lived that made her granddaughter worthy of ruling over 127 countries? REB YANKEL* WAS A SHOEMAKER by profession and a tzaddik in his essence. He kept to himself, masking his gadlus in simplicity. In time, the people of his town began to realize they had a true tzaddik in their midst. Once, Reb Yankel went to a chasunah. When the guests saw him enter, they stood up in his honor. Eschewing kavod, Reb Yankel the shoemaker didn’t approach the head table, but modestly went to sit down at a regular table among the simple folk. The man at his side was thrilled with the opportunity to converse with a tzaddik and asked Reb Yankel to share some words of chizuk. Reb Yankel did not reply, and the man thought that perhaps the tzaddik hadn’t heard the question. When he repeated his request, Reb Yankel quietly responded, “You’re asking me to give you chizuk? In my hometown, there was a man who was ready to pay thousands of rubles just so he could see me, and you’re asking me to give you chizuk?!” The man was stunned. Reb Yankel the shoemaker was known as a humble man who didn’t consider himself any greater than anyone else. How could he have spoken so crudely? Before Reb Yankel got up to leave, he turned to the man and explained himself. “I know what you’re thinking. I’m afraid you didn’t understand me. You see, that Yid who was ready to pay so much money just to see me — he is blind. I wanted to point out something to you. Baruch Hashem, you are healthy. Baruch

Hashem, you can see. That in itself should be the greatest source of chizuk!” REB ZALMAN BRIZEL, ZT”L, a Yerushalmi tzaddik, worked as a milkman for parnassah in his younger years. Day after day, he would lug jugs of milk to sell. It was hard work, and it hardly brought in enough money to feed his family. One day, each of his customers had a different excuse for why they didn’t need to buy milk. After a whole day of trying to make a sale, he found himself without having earned a penny. Feeling utterly dejected, Reb Zalman made his way home. How could he face his hungry family? Soon he came up with a plan. He took a towel and wrapped his shoulder and arm as if it were in a large cast. As he entered the house, he began to groan. His wife dropped what she was doing and ran over him. “What happened? Are you okay?” Reb Zalman answered, “You know, the path to the shuk is so steep… it’s simply dangerous to walk up there with a wagon laden with jugs of milk!” He sighed. “Just a little slip,

“Who cares about money?” his wife cried. “What happened to you? Are you okay?” and it’s possible to break every single bone! But you know, it’s also important to earn money…” “Who cares about money?” his wife cried. “What happened to you? Are you okay?” Reb Zalman threw the towel off his hand and called out, “Baruch Hashem, nothing happened to me. I came home healthy and well. But no money came in today…” In this way, Zalman opened the eyes of his family members. Rather than cry over their deprivation, they would rejoice in their blessings. Life throws us many challenges. But if we pay attention not only to our difficulties, but also to all the good sent our way, we will automatically realize that our situation is not as difficult as we thought. * * * * * This was Sarah’s secret. We can understand the praise of Sarah from Rashi’s explanation of the words of the pasuk, “Shnei chayei Sarah” (23:1). “Kulan shavin l’tovah — all [of her years] were equally good.” To Sarah, it was always good! Throughout her travails — as a childless woman for nine decades, being taken by Pharaoh and Avimelech, and living with Hagar and Yishmael — Sarah never complained. She never reached the point of wondering, “Why am I alive? What do I need this for? I would rather die than experience this pain…” Rather, she accepted everything with love, always with a smile on her face. She was constantly alive! All 127 years of her life were truly lived — full of vitality, joy and acceptance. In correspondence to her 127 years of true chiyus, her granddaughter merited ruling over 127 countries.

In a Show of Support, Holocaust Survivors Pose With Pictures of Hostages Having already witnessed horrific wartime atrocities previously in their lives, more than 200 Holocaust survivors made their way to the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park to show their support for those who were taken captive in last month’s terror attack, as well as their family members. Each of the Holocaust survivors posed with a picture of one of the hostages at the event, which was coordinated by the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island and the Auschwitz Jewish Center foundation in collaboration with the Claims Conference, Museum of Jewish Heritage, Selfhelp, Nachas Health, Bikur Cholim, and HCS Homecare. A large-scale collage featuring Holocaust survivors holding photographs of the hostages will be assembled and displayed at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. VIN News reported that numerous elected officials turned out for the event, with many taking time to speak to the Holocaust survivors, who described the ongoing situation as a repeat of what they saw as children in 1930s Europe. Many in the room felt comforted by remarks made by German Counsel

General Carsten Ruepke, who pledged his solidarity with Israel and admitted publicly that his country bears the historic responsibility for the death of the six million, part of a greater plan to destroy all vestiges of Jewish life in Europe. “It is not easy to put into words what it means to me that so many Holocaust survivors are present here today in a show of solidarity with the hostages taken on October 7th,” said Ruepke. “You all have my deepest respect and admiration. Never again. To me, as a German, it is hard to describe what it feels like knowing that the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors are currently being held hostage by terrorists in Gaza.” Understanding just how trying the last few weeks have been for Holocaust survivors, JCCGCI Executive Director Rabbi Moshe Wiener praised those in attendance for doing their part to raise awareness, categorizing the event as a spark of light during a difficult time. “The message they sent today was a powerful one of unity and solidarity with the hostages and their families,” said Rabbi Weiner. “Holocaust survivors are a living, breathing symbol of fortitude and strength, and a reminder that with every horror inflicted upon us, the Jewish nation endures.” Those thoughts were echoed by Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, who spoke with multiple Holocaust survivors before the official program began, which included speeches from Ruepke, Congressman Dan Goldman, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Assemblyman Sam Berger, City Councilman Eric Dinowitz and City Councilwoman Julie Menin, and several others. “It was just a moving experience to be in a room with so many Holocaust survivors who have endured so much, the worst atrocities that can be committed to mankind, and 80 years later, they came out to advocate on behalf of others,” said Eichenstein.

Among those in attendance was Rabbi Shaya Winiarz of Congregation Beis Hillel, located in New Jersey on the border of Union Township and the city of Elizabeth. “I’m no longer working by myself,” said Rabbi Winiarz. “I can now call on others who know so much about their area of eruv expertise. Rabbi Micah Shotkin, for example, shared that he has spent decades of trial and error to determine what works, and he has offered to guide us and point us in the right direction.” Seeing the achdus in what was clearly a diverse group infused the conference with a unique energy, noted Rabbi Gore. “It was inspiring to see everyone’s shared focus on enhancing shemiras Shabbos, both in their hometowns and in other communities,” said Rabbi Gore. “Each attendee walked away with knowledge, resources and inspiration to fulfill their numerous eruv responsibilities with a renewed passion for helping Klal Yisroel.”

FDA Warns Parents About Toxic Lead Levels Amid Applesauce Pouch Recall

sponsible for eruvin in 35 cities in the United States and Canada coming together to learn about new ways of building and maintaining their communal eruvin. Held at the Orthodox Union headquarters in Manhattan, the conference was organized by Rabbi Ezra Sarna, director of halacha initiatives at the OU, and Rabbi Boruch Gore of the National Eruv Initiative. It served as a vehicle for its over 60 participants to network, discuss shared issues and solutions, and address other facets of managing an eruv in today’s times. “There’s a common misconception that eruvin are easy to construct and that they’re good for 25 years,” said Rabbi Sarna. “People don’t appreciate how hard it is to build an eruv properly and the effort needed to maintain it from week to week.” Leading poskim and rabbanim, including Rabbi Moshe Elefant, Rabbi Herschel Schachter and Rabbi Yoel Cohen addressed those in attendance, offering information on new technology, potential legal matters, and the inherent halachic complexities of constructing and maintaining an eruv. Participants, who came from as far away as Oregon, California, Michigan and Canada, also had an opportunity to learn about the OU’s new software for eruv administrators. Developed using feedback from those in the field, the free software can be used to track issues and repairs in real time, and to facilitate quick communication between those doing maintenance work. Rabbi Chaim Meir Steinmetz of The Monsey Eruv and Rabbi Michah Shotkin of Passaic were both actively involved in the effort to create a conference for eruv professionals, most of whom typically operate on their own. “Until now there was no networking or sharing of ideas,” explained Rabbi Sarna. “Hosting the conference in the OU’s Manhattan headquarters sent the strong message to attendees that their work is of national importance.” 84

Those squeezable pureed fruit pouches are universally loved by parents and little ones, but the Food and Drug Administration is warning parents to steer clear of certain brands, citing toxic lead levels. An initial announcement made early last week by the FDA warned parents that all WanaBana brand apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches were being recalled because some of the product was found to contain elevated levels of lead. Lead can build up in the body over time, and according to the Mayo Clinic, ingesting even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems, while high levels of lead poisoning can be fatal. Given the seriousness of the matter, WanaBana voluntarily recalled all of its apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, even though it appeared that just 27 batches of the product, which were sold in three-pack pouches at Dollar Tree, Amazon and Sam’s Club, were affected. Two additional brands of apple cinnamon puree — Schnucks and Weis Market — were recalled on November 3 because of concerns related to lead levels. The FDA said that it received reports of four children in North Carolina who were found to have elevated levels of lead in their blood, suggesting the possibility of acute lead toxicity.

Multiple lots of the WanaBana puree were found to have extremely high concentrations of lead, which can cause significant health issues in small children. Because children typically do not display obvious symptoms of lead poisoning, the FDA is recommending that parents contact their health provider about having their children tested if they suspect they may have eaten the recalled fruit puree. Given the product’s long shelf life, the FDA is also advising that consumers check their homes for the apple cinnamon fruit puree and discard any that they find to prevent possible future consumption.

Potential Vision Loss Prompts Massive Eye Drop Recall Over two dozen types of over-the-counter eye drops are being recalled by the Food and Drug Administration over reports of serious eye infections that could result in partial vision loss or blindness. The drops, marketed under the CVS, Rite Aid, Walmart (Equate), Target (Up & Up), Leader, Rugy, and Velocity Pharma brands, are being pulled from store shelves after bacteria was found in a product sampling. According to the FDA, agency investigators discovered unsanitary conditions in the plant where the drops were being manufactured. No reports of any eye infections have been received by the FDA, which advised consumers to discard any of the affected products in their possession. The Centers for Disease Control warned consumers who have used any of recalled drops to be on the alert for symptoms of eye infection, which can include eye pain, blurry vision, discharge, sensitivity to light, redness, swelling or the feeling that there is something in their eye.

After Years of Effort, NYC Suspends Alternate Side Parking on Tisha B’Av Tisha B’Av may be months away, but it was on the minds of members of the City Council last week, with a bill suspending alternate side of the street parking on the annual day of mourning unanimously passing on November 2. Hamodia reported that legislation to suspend alternate side parking was first introduced by then-Councilman David Greenfield. The latest bill was sponsored by City Councilman Lincoln Restler, who represents Williamsburg and understands that his Jewish constituents were spending the day in shul and fasting. “The last thing they should have to worry about is moving their car,” said Restler. “I’m proud that with this legislation, the City Council is making it a little bit easier for our neighbors to manage through a tragic and mournful day where we commemorate the lost temples in Jerusalem.” Restler credited co-sponsor City Councilman Kalman Yeger, United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg and the Jewish Community Coalition of Williamsburg for their efforts to assure the bill’s passage.

CHAPTER 30 Riva works on the anniversary menu on her own. Chaim Tzvi dismisses Lani’s plan to finance construction with her income. Mr. Gabioff grants Riva schedule flexibility.

very pale Chevi emerged from one of the inner doors of the clinic. Lani couldn’t help the cynical thoughts. Chevi didn’t need therapy. What were they going to do, uncover some long-buried trauma? Maybe the lollipop that fell down the storm drain on the way back from Morah when Chevi was three, and Mommy never replaced it, even though she’d promised she would. Scarred for life. With great effort, she offered Chevi a warm smile. She was bursting to ask how the session had gone, but she restrained herself. Chevi had chosen to do this on her own, without her mother in the room, and although Lani burned with curiosity, she kept quiet. They thanked the therapist, Adina Kahan, arranged the next appoint94

ment, then walked out into the rain. “I want to get high platform white sneakers for the summer,” Chevi said as soon as the door closed behind them. Lani popped open her umbrella. “Really?” Uh, is this the summary of your session? Chevi stepped close to Lani so she could walk under the umbrella too. “With gold laces,” she went on, and Lani halfheartedly took the cue: They weren’t going to talk about the therapy session. They were going to pretend it had never happened. Despite her curiosity, Lani accepted this reality with a measure of relief. If they didn’t talk about therapy, therapy wouldn’t be a thing. She’d bring Chevi here a couple of times, as if these appointments were dentist appointments, and then this

whole parsha would be behind them. The school would no longer be down her back, the girls would grow up and move on — which would happen regardless — and… …and Riva would win. A gust of wet wind swept over her as the thought struck. She swiped her face with her free hand and quickened her pace. “Chunky soles, white, gold laces,” she repeated crisply. They stopped at a bagel store to buy lunch, since Chevi had missed lunch in school. After that, they didn’t speak another word — not about therapy, not about sneakers — the rest of the way back to school. Chevi played with her Rubik’s cube while walking, and Lani gave up on getting her to share any of her thoughts. “We’re torturing her,” she told Chaim Tzvi later that night as she collapsed the grocery boxes. “We’re messing with her brain. I’m her mother, and I’m telling you, this isn’t good for her.” Chaim Tzvi spun a roll of tape around his finger. “Did you talk to the therapist?” “Yes. All she said was that it was a good session and that she started breaking through to her. She told me to give her a little space now. Space!” She dropped a folded box and waved her hands to encapsulate their cramped quarters. “Hello, Chaim Tzvi, this kid is nine years old, she has her exclusive prize box that nobody dare touch. That’s all the space a kid her age needs. I’ll tell you who could use a little space now.” A weird look crossed Chaim Tzvi’s face. “Everyone needs space,” he said quietly. Lani stomped on the stack of boxes. He was right, obviously, and she knew she wasn’t making much sense, but she couldn’t help it. Something flared inside her every time she thought about Chevi and Fraidy. “Give it a little more time,” Chaim Tzvi said. “Things will settle down, you’ll see.” “You sound very confident about that.” A stillness filled the air after that comment, and Lani turned her attention away from the boxes to look at Chaim Tzvi. The light in his eyes had dimmed, and Lani saw that he was hurt.

“I—” he started. “Whoops, sorry, I need to take this call.” Lani watched him step out the door with the odd suspicion that his phone hadn’t rung at all. *****

The Millers’ lives were spread out in dozens of 4x6-inch piles on the Strohs’ dining room table. With the anniversary inching closer, Riva had been forced to put aside her anger and talk to Lani. And when she wasn’t thinking about Fraidy and Chevi, it was actually fun to work on a project together with her sister. Now she jammed the phone between her shoulder and ear and picked up one stack of photos. “I hope we’ll manage to get Purim into one spread,” she said, fanning the stack. “I have, like, 40 winner pictures here. Oh my, remember the year Mommy dressed up in our uniform?” “Ohmigosh, yesss! That was sooo funny! She wore a sweatband on her sheitel, right?” “We’ll have to narrow these down to the best ones,” Riva said. “It’s too many pictures for one spread.” “Okay. And maybe we should do a second spread with our kids’ Purim pictures?” Lani suggested. “Should we? Do we care if this scrapbook has so many pages?” “The more the merrier, I think. Tatty and Mommy are going to love it.” “Don’t forget the poems. We need the space to include them.” “Right, definitely.” The poems were hilarious. Riva had roped her friend Surie Abraham into helping her write them, and together, they’d really nailed it. “In any case, we really have to get moving. We’re going to need the time to play around on Shutterfly, and I’d love to place the order before Shavuos. In case anything goes wrong, we need to give ourselves a little time.” “Right. Think you’ll be able to come over tomorrow night to work on this? I’ll ask Yaakov to bring home his laptop.” Fraidy came into the dining room, fresh out of the shower and brushing her wet hair. She pulled out one of the chairs and leaned over the table to look at the pictures. “Don’t drip on the pictures,” Riva told her. Then she turned back to Lani. “I’m thinking, maybe we should print out those poems to pass around, so everyone can follow along while the girls read.” Fraidy eyes flew up from the pictures, and she stared at Riva with bewilderment. “Poems?” she asked. Riva raised a finger, motioning for her to wait. She contin-

ued her conversation, finishing up by saying that she hoped to have all the pictures sorted by the next day so they could get to work on the graphics. “What poems are you talking about?” Fraidy asked sharply as soon as Riva hung up. “I didn’t tell you? When we present the scrapbook to Zeidy and Bubby, we’re going to have you and all the girls recite little poems for each spread. I’ll show them to you when they’re done; they’re really cute.” The cuteness of the poems clearly didn’t interest Fraidy. “What do you mean, me and the girls?” “Uh, Lani’s girls. Shaya and Tzippy can’t read yet, right?” Fraidy slammed her brush down on the table. “Ma, if Chevi is getting up there to recite poems, I am not going to stand there along with her.” Ouch. Riva’s eyes swept over the pictures spread out on her table, and she resisted the urge to gather them all up and dump them into a bag. How much longer was this craziness going to go on? She was sick of it, totally and completely sick. She managed to keep her composure. “Don’t worry, it’ll work out,” she assured Fraidy, backing her words with absolutely zero proof. “We’ll make sure she doesn’t bother you.” A little later, when she confirmed that Fraidy was sleeping, Riva decided to do just that: make sure. Lani answered the phone with perfect casualness. “Making progress?” she asked. “I feel bad that you’re doing all this work on your own. I thought I’d be able to hop over to help, but I have a ton of baking to do for my orders tomorrow morning.” The orders that I arranged for you, Riva thought with a cruel pang. Aloud she said, in an icy voice, “We have a problem.” *****

The problem came up the next day in the therapy room. “Tell me, Fraidy, what do you think is going to happen if you stand next to Chevi at the anniversary party and take turns reading those poems to your grandparents?” Machla asked. “I’m going to stutter.” “You’re going to stutter?” “And she’s going to imitate me. And everyone’s going to laugh.” “You’re worried that you’ll stutter and she’ll imitate you?” Riva followed the conversation — Fraidy still preferred that she sit in on every session, and the therapist was okay with it — hanging on closely to every word. Machla Zimmer was a pro at letting her clients lead the conversation. The session segued into the activity of creating replacement thoughts, a goal that Machla constantly pushed Fraidy toward.

“Notice, replace. Notice, replace,” she chanted. Fraidy noticed: She noticed her crippling fears, her insecurities, her shame. And she replaced, mainly by repeating Machla’s words: I am strong. She knows I’m strong. She’s testing me. I will win. I will stay strong. She cannot hurt me. When the session ended, Machla called Riva aside. “This isn’t the preferred solution, but to make things easier for now, is there any option of separating the girls? Even temporarily?” Riva shook her head. “There are no parallel classes in this school. And changing schools is a drastic move.” “How about camp? Are they going to the same day camp this summer?” “They were going to, but… maybe they don’t have to. That’s not so drastic.” “Look into it,” Machla advised. “Let me know what happens.” Although the session had been about Fraidy, after dropping her daughter off at school and heading to the supermarket to do her Shabbos shopping, Riva’s thoughts wandered. What would it take for her to get a break from her boss? To earn a reprieve from the constant mind games, from the insecurities, from the fear, from the shame? She knew the answer. The answer was to part ways, to leave her job. And then? How will we ever save up to buy a house?

But as she dropped potatoes into a produce bag, she chided herself for these thoughts. If she was being perfectly honest, it wasn’t only the lost income or the future house that was keeping her back. After so many years, she’d become entrenched in the toxicity. She stayed on at Kleenup because she didn’t have the guts to leave. She was afraid of leaving. She was so used to this — to the torture, to the one-upmanship — that it had grown comfortably familiar, a wound on her heart that was bizarrely satisfying to pick. She pictured herself walking over to her boss, staring him in the eye and telling him, “I’m leaving.” The scene made her fingers tremble as she threw a bag of carrots into her wagon. Notice: I’m terrified, I’m embarrassed, I’m feeling like I’m not entitled to a relief from him. Replace: I am strong, he can’t hurt me, I can run my own life and not care what he thinks of me. Notice, replace. Notice, replace. She shook open a bag and started dumping onions inside. She could notice. She could replace. She could take herself out of Kleenup. But the main question remained: Could she take Kleenup out of herself?

“WE’RE TORTURING HER,” SHE TOLD CHAIM TZVI. “WE’RE MESSING WITH HER BRAIN. I’M HER MOTHER, AND I’M TELLING YOU, THIS ISN’T GOOD FOR HER”

A minhag with a mesorah...

The number one step for

a stress-free simchah

M

aking a wedding is always an exciting and emotional time. The whole family, mechutanim, grandparents, children and not to mention the chassan and kallah, get pulled into the excitement as they count down to that special day, when they’ll finally be led under the chuppah. The to-do list is long and detailed. You need to clothe the entire family. Furnish the apartment. Buy the shtafir, plan the logistics of the chasunah, organize the sheva berachas and... the list never really finishes. You try to think of every detail. You take note of every advice shared by your family and friends. You daven and hope that everything goes well and your simchah will be a ‘simchah with simchah’. You flip through every sefer for segulos that ‘guarantee’ you more Siyata dishmaya. Is there something more you can do, you wonder?

We see that based on our mesorah, protecting against Eyin Harah is the correct and necessary hishtadlus for you to do to make sure you can celebrate your simchah with peace of mind. So yes, just one phone call to Einey Yeshuah and, like the hundreds of mechutanim before you, the real stress and worry is over. One short phone call and you’re registered in the ‘’Sefer Hasimchah’’. That’s all it takes to ensure that Einey Yeshuos has you and your family in mind with the special segulos and practices, all based on solid tradition. And, as you move forward, from the first exhilarating moments of anticipation as you bring in Shabbos Aufruf, until that satisfied sigh of nachas and sheer gratitude at the last sheva berachos, you’ll have the calmness and serenity of knowing that you’ve done your part in bringing this extra protection and siyata dishmaya to your special occasion.

The answer is yes. And fortunately, it takes only one phone call!

Already as far back as in the times of the Tashba’’tz (around 600 years ago) we find a minhag for mechutanim to practice certain segulos to ward off the Eyin Harah (Tashbatz, Katan, Ch 464). Still later, the Shevet Mussar cautions about protecting against Eyin Harah - especially families of Chasan and Kallah! In fact, that’s one of the reasons why we break a glass under the chuppah - to protect against any Eyin Harah that may be present (Ohr Hachamah).

IT’S 2:18 A.M.

and I’m lying in bed, wide awake and staring into the darkness.

Again. I’ve had insomnia for as long as I can remember. When I was ten years old, my doctor told me that even if I didn’t fall asleep right away, just being in bed and resting was important. I took that to mean that bedtime wasn’t applicable to me and would read under my covers until my eyes closed. Although often a very isolating and frustrating experience, insomnia affects roughly one in three adults, so there are plenty of other people lying awake in their beds along with you. Feel a little better now? No, I didn’t think so. For those of you who fall asleep the second your head hits the pillow (I’ve always wondered how that feels), or if you’ve experienced insomnia and aren’t sure what to do about it, here are the facts, features and fixes for this sleep disorder.

SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT

What is insomnia? Insomnia means going to bed and turning and twisting for hours, having your mind race with random thoughts, flipping over your pillow, flipping it back again, alternating between white noise and lying in silence, flipping your blanket, and turning back onto your other side again. In official terms, insomnia is “trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting good quality sleep.” There are two types of insomnia: acute and chronic. Acute insomnia is a short-term bout of insomnia that can usually be explained by stress or a big life change or event. Chronic insomnia is when someone experiences insomnia three or more times a week, for more than three months, and the change in sleep patterns can’t be explained by any life circumstances or other health issues. Chronic insomnia affects the person during daytime as well, since they’re drowsy and have a hard time concentrating on tasks due to lack of sufficient sleep. Chronic insomnia can also raise the risk of various health issues, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and other scary-sounding things that I don’t want to think about. (Seriously — it’s not like I’m at fault for my insomnia, so I don’t think it’s nice that I should be at risk for these things. In these situations I like to use a coping method called denial.) Insomnia is often a very isolating experience, and many insomniacs report feeling misunderstood.

“WHEN I TELL PEOPLE ABOUT MY INSOMNIA, THEY SAY, ‘JUST GO TO SLEEP!’ MANY PEOPLE REALLY DON’T GET WHAT A STRUGGLE IT CAN BE TO LIE IN BED FOR HOURS AND NOT FALL ASLEEP” 120

Historian A. Roger Ekirch was doing research for a book he was writing and came across an interesting phenomenon. In dozens of ancient court documents, historical records and literature, he found details of an interesting sleep pattern that was the norm in past times. Instead of sleeping for a block of eight to ten hours a night as we do today, people were going to sleep when it became dark. Then they would wake up at midnight for an hour or two and do chores, chat a bit with family members, and then go back to sleep until the sun rose. It wasn’t until the introduction of gas power and electricity in the early 19th century that people were able to delay bedtime and continue their activities even after it got dark, and would then sleep straight through the night. According to Ekirch’s findings, artificial light completely changed our natural sleep cycles. Medical research shows that insomnia emerged as a problem only in the late 19th century, when people started complaining about being unable to sleep through the night. Based on his research, Ekirch says that their bodies might have been trying to get back into the natural cycle of how people used to sleep. This theory was researched in the 1990s by psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Wehr. He conducted a clinical trial in which five young volunteers were deprived of all artificial light. He found that after a few weeks, their sleep was naturally becoming segmented, just like it had been in earlier times.

WHAT IS MELATONIN? Our bodies generate many different hormones to fit different situations. When the sun goes down and it starts getting dark outside, our bodies start producing a hormone called melatonin, also called the “sleep hormone.” This sends the message to your brain that it’s time to get sleepy and wind down. Research shows that the onset of melatonin for most adults is roughly at 9:30 p.m., and it usually takes around two hours after that to fall asleep. Interestingly enough, for adults with ADHD, melatonin onset seems to start later, at around 10:15, and it takes them another three hours to fall asleep. For people who have a hard time falling asleep, melatonin supplements can aid your natural supply of this hormone. Contrary to popular belief, you should take melatonin 90 to 120 minutes before you plan to go to sleep to give it a chance to metabolize in your body, much like natural melatonin takes two hours to go into effect. If you’re taking it right before bed and are still having an easier time falling asleep, you’re probably experiencing the placebo effect, where the knowledge that you took something puts you at ease and helps you relax in order to fall asleep. Doctors don’t recommend taking melatonin on a nightly basis, only as a short-term solution. Always consult with your doctor before taking any supplements.

“When I tell people about my insomnia, they say, ‘Just go to sleep!’ Many people really don’t get what a struggle it can be to lie in bed for hours staring into the dark and not being able to fall asleep,” recounts Zissy. Zissy struggled with severe insomnia after the birth of her third child and would often get as little as two hours of sleep a night, leaving her extremely fatigued and barely able to function during the daytime. After experiencing debilitating insomnia for a few nights in a row, Zissy often finds herself becoming anxious as nighttime approaches, fearing and dreading the experience of being painfully tired but unable to fall asleep. Of course, that anxiety only contributes to her inability to sleep, as the neurochemicals produced by anxious thoughts serve to keep her awake — a vicious cycle. That experience is shared by many insomniacs.

What to do? Although there’s relatively little medical research on insomnia and its treatment, there are a few things that have been proven to improve symptoms, reduce sleep-related anxiety, and support a better night’s sleep.

LIGHT THERAPY Our bodies were created to be in tune with the world’s 24hour cycle. In order to be as much in sync with it as possible, our bodies need adequate exposure to sunlight. Sunlight exposure controls the body’s production of melatonin, which is the sleep hormone. For people who work night shifts or don’t get enough sunlight for other reasons, doctors might suggest an interesting treatment called light therapy. It entails sitting in front of a box

STATS: Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder; 30% of adults will experience short-term insomnia in their lifetime. An estimated 10% to 15% of people suffer from chronic insomnia. The recommended number of hours of sleep for an adult is seven to nine hours, though 35% of people get less than that. The recommended number of hours of sleep for young children is nine to twelve hours.

that mimics sunlight. This can help reduce jetlag and insomnia, and get your body back into its natural sleep cycle.

SLEEP HYGIENE

THE STATE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH DIRECTLY AFFECTS YOUR ABILITY TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

No, it doesn’t mean clean sleep. Sleep hygiene means having an optimal sleep environment and a daily routine that helps you get better quality sleep. Your bed and bedroom should be a peaceful oasis that’s reserved only for relaxing activities like sleeping and reading, and not for doing homework, working, or doing any activity that doesn’t make you feel calm or sleepy. Psychologists discourage bringing anything into your bedroom that causes stress or isn’t directly related to sleep. That way your brain will connect your bed only to relaxation, and you’ll have an easier time falling asleep at night. You can try bringing in scented candles and creating dim lighting in your bedroom, organizing it so it’s neat and clean, and taking out unnecessary electronics or other items that might distract from a peaceful atmosphere. Sleep hygiene doesn’t just start when you’re in bed, though; having a consistent pre-bedtime routine helps your mind and body get into sleeping mode before you even get into bed.

SOME IDEAS FOR GOOD SLEEP HYGIENE CAN BE: Shutting off your phone an hour before going to bed. The light of the screen keeps your brain awake Taking a warm bath Having a skin-care routine, washing your face with warm water, or anything else that makes you feel fresh and clean Reading a book

Listening to calming music Meditating Writing in a gratitude journal and focusing on the things that made you happy and grateful that day

Creating such habits puts you in a calm headspace and helps your brain slow down so you can put the day behind you and fall asleep easily once you actually get into bed.

RED LIGHT, BLUE LIGHT The artificial light around us that changed the way humanity sleeps isn’t just in our lamps and chandeliers. It’s also in our screens, phones and computers, though screen light is a specific kind of light. There are seven colors of visible light (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet), each with a different energy level and wavelength. Blue light, which is found in all LED and fluorescent lights, has the highest energy levels and shortest wavelengths. Natural blue light is emitted from the sun and is actually beneficial for our sleep-wake cycle, also known as our circadian rhythm, and is shown to increase energy, memory, mood and alertness. Which may sound great, but too much of a good thing isn’t always good. Having too much exposure to blue light at night will keep your brain stimulated and disrupt melatonin production. Besides the obvious solution, there are additional ways to limit your blue light exposure. Studies show that red light wavelengths increase melatonin levels and sleep quality. There are red light therapy lamps, also known as “melatonin lamps,” and even red-light bulbs, which have shown to increase melatonin and support better sleep. You can also find blue light glasses, which block, or at least limit, the blue light glare from screens. Wearing such glasses throughout the day can help mitigate the effects of blue light and help you avoid insomnia.

MENTAL HEALTH It’s cliché for a reason. The state of your mental health directly affects your ability to get a good night’s sleep. When you’re stressed or anxious, those thoughts will haunt you when the world goes quiet and there’s nothing to distract you. Going to therapy, hashing it out with a friend, or taking the time to address the things in your life that cause you stress will help put your mind at ease so you can sleep at night. Researchers especially recommend doing CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), a therapeutic method that has shown itself to be effective in helping insomnia. Doing yoga can also help you learn how to relax and reduce anxiety, which can help you fall asleep faster.

PHYSICAL HEALTH If you’ve tried some of the above ideas but are still experiencing insomnia, go to a primary care physician to check it out. Although there are no tests that can definitively diagnose insomnia, doctors can give a diagnosis based on sleep habits, health history, and by conducting different sleep tests. If they determine that someone has insomnia disorder, they may prescribe sleep medication.

REMEMBER TO SAY SHEMA! Of course, the best cure is to say Krias Shema with concentration, to remember that Hashem is with you and watching over you as you sleep. Some suggest to say Shema again if you’re unable to fall asleep after a while.

We’re all familiar with the classic stereotype of the early bird — like your neighbor who walks up to you as you’re rubbing your eyes at 9:00 a.m. She’s sneaker-clad from her long jog around the block, holding a fresh smoothie, and talking animatedly about the challahs she’s got baking in the oven already. But what about the night owls at the other end of the spectrum? You know them; they’re the ones who make their phone calls after midnight — so if your phone rings, you know it’s them. They’re also the ones who have their nighttime in the a.m. and are still going strong when you’re desperate to tumble into bed after a long day. What’s it like for them?

MYTH OR NOT? WHAT IS A NIGHT OWL? Many people think it’s a myth. Morning lark, night owl, they’re all excuses. Night owls often have to defend themselves to angry bosses who can’t understand their tardiness, or friends who keep telling them to “just go to sleep earlier.” However, modern science shows that the tendency to be an early bird or night owl is actually in a person’s DNA; their brains are scientifically wired differently. Sleep tendencies, including whether you’re a morning lark or night owl, are predetermined by genes that control our biological clocks. Those friends or acquaintances who are always up till 2:00 a.m.? Their body works differently than yours. They’re simply not tired. For most people, energy levels spike in the morning, at around 10:00 a.m., or two hours after waking up. Then it slowly declines as the day goes on, usually wearing off at about 3:00 p.m. (If you’ve ever wondered why the last two hours at your jobs feel the longest, here’s why.) Conversely, night owls are not at their best in the morning, and slowly pick up speed as the afternoon wears on, reaching their peak at 9:00 p.m., when the rest of humanity is wrapping up their day and starting their nighttime routines. Their energy then wanes until they reach their lowest point between midnight and 5:00 a.m., at which point they get into bed for the few hours remaining until morning’s duties call.

AM I A NIGHT OWL? So what does being a night owl really mean? The teenager studying for finals until 3 a.m.? The mother pulling an allnighter the week before Pesach because her cleaning lady canceled on her? Typical night owls stay awake and alert past midnight, and extreme night owls call it a day only once dawn is breaking. If you’re downing coffee after coffee at 3 a.m. to keep you awake long enough to finish that project that’s due tomorrow, then you don’t quite fit the bill. 136

Night owls don’t push themselves to stay up; nighttime is when they are naturally the most energetic and productive. However, that doesn’t mean they need less sleep. Both morning larks and night owls need the same eight hours of sleep a night. Night owls have to find a way to get that, whether by working at a job that starts later in the day or prioritizing a daily nap.

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A NIGHT OWL? People are genetically predisposed to being a night owl, because their circadian rhythm differs from the sleeping pattern of most people. Interestingly, studies show that the tendency to be a night owl is more prevalent in women than in men. However, other studies prove that more men than women consider themselves to be night owls. This is probably because men need less sleep than women in general. Being a night owl is also dependent on lifestyle choices — for example, before electricity was invented, the idea of night owls was nonexistent.

WHAT’S IT LIKE FOR THEM? What is it like for those who are wired with these unique personal clocks, living with schedules so different from those of family and friends? The best way to find out is by hearing from those in the trenches.

SO WHAT’S CONSIDERED AN EARLY OR LATE NIGHT FOR A NIGHT OWL?

MEET THE OWLS: ESTY EINHORN

Esty, a sheitel macher and mother of two, says she sometimes gets to bed at 11:00 p.m. However, at least once a week, usually on a Thursday, she stays up until 4:00 a.m. And not too infrequently, she doesn’t get to see her bed at all. “I just work and work until I

doze off on the couch, then wake up early in the morning and continue doing what I was in the middle of doing.” Simi aims for 12:00, but often ends up going to sleep as late as 3:00 a.m. Sarah shares that an early night is anything before 1:00 a.m. A late night, which happens often, is between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. “Two a.m. never happens, somehow. This answer was unanimous. “Very,” Esty exclaims ruefully. “I don’t go to sleep until everything on the day’s agenda is done, and then it’s so hard for me to get up for work the next day.” ` Simi explains, “It does get very tiring, but that’s when my mind is clearest and I work best.” Sarah agrees, but adds, “Which Yiddishe mamme isn’t tired?”

Unless night owl marries night owl, spouses are usually not on the same schedule. For someone not naturally inclined to be up at night, it’s an almost impossible schedule to maintain. Additionally, as Sarah explains, her husband has to turn in early because he takes up the workload in the morning. He’s on top of getting the kids off to school while she makes up in part for the lost zzz’s. Simi adds that although her husband is naturally more the early-to-bed-early-to-rise type, unfortunately, she’s trained him well. “By now he’s learned to stay up till midnight. But if it gets later than that, he’ll be asleep well before me.”

WHAT DO NIGHT OWLS DO ALL NIGHT? For Esty, it’s always different. She sets a daily to-do list for herself and doesn’t go to sleep until every last item is crossed off. Folding laundry, washing and setting sheitlech, and cooking are all valid reasons to ignore the clock’s call. Simi explains that it’s either typical household duties or business work that just didn’t happen during the day. “Limited daytime working hours call for late nights,” she says. For Sarah, throwing in a load or tackling the dishes often happens during the nocturnal hours. But she’s generally up doing business work, namely strategizing for the marketing agency she runs.

DO NIGHT OWLS SLEEP DURING THE DAY? Although all of them wish they did, most echo the sentiment that napping is a luxury they can ill afford. After all, they have typical jobs and, come morning, their children are usually pulling at their mother’s covers and demanding their attention. Schools and jobs don’t make allowances just because someone is on an alternate schedule.

BECOMING A LARK CAN A NIGHT OWL BECOME AN EARLY BIRD? Changing your body’s natural sleep patterns is extremely difficult. However, with thought-out changes to sleep habits, it’s certainly possible. Here’s how:

TIPS TO BECOME A MORNING LARK: Change your bedtime incrementally, moving it back by 15 or 30 minutes a night. Don’t just expect your body to adjust to bedtime at 10:00 p.m. instead of 2:00 a.m. in one night. Expose yourself to sunlight soon after you wake up. This will help your body realize it’s daytime. Avoid caffeine, blue lights from phones or screens, and naps from 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon until you go to sleep. Develop a consistent bedtime routine that includes an earlier suppertime and time to unwind at 9:30 p.m.

IS IT ALL THAT BAD TO BE A NIGHT OWL? If you’re a night owl, you’ve probably heard the saying “The early bird catches the worm” from well-meaning friends and family. Fear not! There are definite benefits to being a night owl. Studies prove that night owls typically have a higher IQ and are more intelligent. Although schoolchildren are always told to go to bed earlier, and their night owl counterparts do usually score lower on academic performance, they might be better off in the general intelligence department. A study conducted at the London School of Economics and Political Science discovered that “more intelligent children are more likely to grow up to be nocturnal adults who go to bed late and wake up late on both weekdays and weekends.” Another study, from the University of Madrid, found that night owls usually scored higher than morning people on inductive reasoning, which “serves as an estimate of general intelligence and a strong predictor for academic performance.” Night owls are also often more creative thinkers than their early-bird counterparts. Marina Giampietro, the lead author of a study about this topic, hypothesized that this is because “being in a situation which diverges from conventional habit… may encourage the ability to find alternative and creative solutions.” Nighttime is often most conducive for creative bursts of imagination and ideas, which night owls can optimize while the world is asleep. Whether morning lark or night owl, as long as you’re attuned to your body’s needs, you’ll be your best and most productive self. Just don’t get any ideas about staying up until sunrise!

Mommy, You Are My

Name: Seryl Age: 36 Location: New Jersey You know those go getters, that can’t seem to sit still? That’s me. I’m quick, full of energy, I work on many different fronts. I do the curriculum for a school, run a business, volunteer for two organizations, and take care of my growing family. That’s because I get a thrill from working hard and seeing success. I’m driven to see the fruits of my labor, it gives me a sense of pride, accomplishment and value. You see, my life is so full, so busy, never a dull moment. But here’s the catch. Everything’s good as long as the cards are all laid out neatly. As soon as one card swoops out, my cards all go tumbling out, taking me on a ride along. In the beginning, when things went wrong, I didn’t know how to handle it, I thought I’m losing my marbles! How do I continue from here? How do I pick myself up again and move on with life? At some point, my friend hooked me onto Mrs. Frank’s course, and to say I was ‘hooked’ is an understatement! She taught me so much. She taught me the basics, of (what I’m ashamed to say) is a pity I hadn’t known before. She gave me step by step guidance. Gradually, I learned. I learned how to confront my challenges in a new dimension, confidently. I learned how to live the life I envisioned, and in alignment with my personality. I had so much information in the past, but I couldn’t carry it over in practical living. Now, the information I learned from Mrs. Frank’s course enables me to use all my knowledge and live by it. Yes, I’m still myself, the same old busy mother, worker and volunteer, but how I live my life, and the quality of my life, has been changed forever!

My home is a happy healthy home b”H. I thank Hashem for my lechtige children, who are true gems, one by one. If you look into the peephole, there’s always laughter and positivity emanating from our little apartment. In the center of all this happiness is a content, self-assured mother that connects easily to her children. But it wasn’t always this way. This is a new version of myself, post this course. Truthfully, I’m not taking blame here, because I gleaned from my past a whole different way of living. The realization hit me when I noticed how hard it was for me to really connect with my kids’ feelings on a deeper level. That’s when I knew I had to alter my path in parenting. I learned many important things from the course, I gained a world! But this one is a game changer; in order for me to connect with my kids, I needed to first learn to connect with myself. To really connect to myself! (I always thought I knew how to…). It was a fascinating experience going into my world of emotions, understanding where it’s coming from, why they come, and how to tap into those emotions at any time. I discovered new sides of myself that I hadn’t even known existed! Before I knew what was happening, I started talking to my kids differently, giving them security and love. Suddenly they were sharing with me their little world! It took me some time to realize why they let me peek into their little hearts. I believe it’s solely because I was trained how to tune into their emotions. I couldn’t have done this myself, because I didn’t grow up with this awareness, although I have read so much about this concept. With Mrs. Frank’s excellent clear-cut methods and guidance, I slowly adapted a new lifestyle, connecting to myself and to my kids. I will always be grateful to her!

ave you ever seen an owl staring at you from the hollow of a tree? Probably not, even though there are plenty of owls in New York. You aren’t very likely to ever see an owl, unless you go looking for one. Owls are secretive and mostly nocturnal, which means

they’re awake at night and sleep by day. You might hear an owl’s distinctive “Whoo!” cry on occasion, but you probably won’t get to see it in action. As a stealthy night hunter, the owl is known as a mysterious, almost spooky bird. But there are many types of owls, including cute and tiny ones, threatening and dangerous ones, and even one that’s as big as a fire hydrant.

Too Few: The Pernambuco Pygmy Owl This pygmy owl is pretty tiny, measuring in at about five inches tall in total. It might be the rarest owl species — if there are any still around, that is. Having been hunted to near extinction in its natural habitat, the last time this little owl was seen was in 2001. It lives only in Pernambuco, Brazil, which is where it gets its name. There, the Pernambuco pygmy owl makes its home in the canopied rainforest.

In the Arctic: The Snowy Owl Most owls have feathers in various shades of brown, so this striking white owl definitely stands out. It’s called “snowy” for its distinctive color, but as it happens, this owl does live in snowy Arctic climates. That’s what gives it another name: the polar owl. One of an owl’s best hunting and defense tools is its ability to blend into its surroundings. Since the majority of owls need to blend into the treetops, their feathers are colored to look like tree branches. The snowy owl’s white feathers match its white habitat. Not all snowy owls are pure white, though. Female snowy owls have white feathers with dark markings.

Watch Out! It’s a Great Horned Owl If you always picture owls simply sitting in a tree and staring into the night, you may need to let go of that assumption. Owls can be dangerous. When owls feel threatened, they use all of their aggressive hunting instincts to fight whoever or whatever is intruding on their territory. Of all owls, the great horned owl is considered the most dangerous. Its strong talons (hooked claws) can crush its prey’s skull, and its beak is curved and sharp. These owls are aggressive hunters, which is why they are considered so dangerous. Interestingly, these owls don’t actually have horns. Those spiky things on top of their ears are simply tufted feathers.

A Tiny Thing: The Elf Owl This owl is about as big as a sparrow, and it has bright yellow eyes. They are the lightest owls in the world, weighing in at only 1.4 ounces, though their wingspan can be up to 10 inches wide. Elf owls often make their nests in tree holes created by woodpeckers. Like all other owls, elf owls are hunters. Due to their small size, they eat mostly moths and crickets, hunting them at dawn and at dusk.

Atypically Typical: The Barn Owl With its heart-shaped face, you might find this owl pretty cute. The barn owl is the most common owl in the world, living on every continent except Antarctica. Even if you like their looks, the sounds that barn owls make can be haunting. These owls don’t make the typical hooting sound that owls are so famous for. Instead, they have a long harsh screech that lasts up to two seconds. If there’s a scary bird screeching in the middle of the night, chances are it’s a barn owl.

Here’s a Big One: The Blakiston’s Fish Owl Blakiston’s fish owls are as large as fire hydrants. They’re the largest kind of owl in the world, reaching over two feet tall and with a wingspan of nearly 80 inches. They’re so big that they usually make their nests in the hollows at the top of huge, tall trees that can handle their weight and size. These owls are named fish owls because they mostly hunt fish, sometimes catching one that’s even heavier than they are. Blakiston’s fish owls are picky about where they’ll live, and can be found only in Siberia, China and Japan. Their habitats there are shrinking, though, making the Blakiston’s fish owl a pretty rare owl species.

Hiding Away: The Burrowing Owl This little guy likes to break all the owl rules. Firstly, it doesn’t live in trees, but underground. Its nest is often an abandoned burrow, or underground tunnel, that was dug by another animal like a prairie dog. Burrowing owls love being on the ground so much that they don’t fly away even when they’re confronted by a threat. They run away or flatten themselves against the ground. You can almost always find them perched on the ground or hovering right above it, as if they didn’t know they had wings. Other owls are active at night, but not this one contrary guy. This owl is most active during the day, hunting fish, reptiles and rodents on the ground.

Especially Scholarly: The Spectacled Owl Owls have amazing eyesight. But the unique-looking spectacled owl appears to have donned a pair anyway, probably for the looks of it. The white feathers around its eyes make it look as if it’s wearing a pair of glasses, which is where its name comes from. Spectacled owls live in tropical rainforests, eating birds and reptiles with an occasional small monkey thrown in for a change.

Are Owls Wise? Owls have the largest brain of any bird, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re intelligent. We think of owls as a wise bird because in many fables and stories, the owl is an advisor to the other animals. Although scientists haven’t found that owls do especially well on intelligence tests, owls are definitely clever, strategic hunters, with an 85% success rate in capturing their prey. That’s an extremely high success rate for a bird of prey.

Odd Owl Facts Owls are birds, but they don’t like to build nests. That’s why you might see them nesting in a hollowed-out tree or at the top of a tree trunk. Alternatively, they find a nest that was abandoned by another bird, and move in. The problems start when it’s not really an abandoned nest, and the owner bird comes back to its home.

Hunting in the stillness of the night means the owl needs to be extra stealthy, so its prey doesn’t hear it coming and escape. Owls fly almost silently. Instead of the wing flapping you’d expect to hear when you see an owl’s huge wings, you hear nothing. That’s partially due to the fact that their wings are so large compared to their bodies, which lets them fly slowly and smoothly. It’s also due to their unique feathers, which are fringed at the end, designed to cut the noise of their wings flapping.

There’s a reason for the owl’s flat, round face. It’s called a facial disk, and it serves an important function. Because an owl hunts at night, it uses its extremely sharp hearing to locate prey. The feathers on its facial disk help collect sound and funnel it toward its ears. That’s how an owl can accurately grab its prey in complete darkness. Owls also have excellent night vision, with their eyes being literally glow-in-the-dark. Owl eyes glow an orange-red color when you shine a light on them at night. That phenomenon is called eyeshine, and it gives them the ability to see in darkness.

Save Me a Stripe: The Barred Owl Brown bars on this owl’s white feathers give it its name, and it has brown eyes instead of the usual yellow ones. Although this owl doesn’t have the most striking of appearances, its call is very unique. It gives a series of eight hoots in a row, which sound like this: “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?” The barred owl is a very vocal owl and will make different sounds as well. Because of this, it’s also sometimes called the laughing owl.

What an Earful: The Long-Eared Owl Spoiler: The long-eared owl’s long ears are actually not ears at all, just like the great horned owl’s horns are not horns, either. This owl’s “ears” are just tufts of feathers that stand straight up on their head. Their actual ears are holes on the sides of their face. What’s the point of these extra-long tufts, then? Probably for better camouflage, like so many other owl characteristics. By raising its ear tufts and compressing its body, the owl can look like a part of a tree with two little branches sticking out.

So I took a deep breath, said a tefillah, and told my friends and family that I was accepting clients. I was shocked at what happened next. I got an absolute outpouring of support and encouragement. And they didn’t just say “Good for you!” or “Good luck!” They trusted me enough to hire me, to pay me real money, to actually organize their pantries and closets. I did four classrooms full of art closets, table and chair arrangements, and educational play stations. We had so much fun working together, and it remains one of my favorite projects. When I got that first check, I felt so much satisfaction, I wanted to frame it. There was Esty, whom I used to meet at the pool. When she heard I was going out on my own, her first words were, “I’m hiring you.” And she did — she hired me to organize her walk-in pantry (and we all know how seriously women take their pantries). She was one of my “first eight,” and I charged her only slightly

more that I made as an assistant — and delivered stunning work. She was thrilled to gain a professionally organized pantry at cost price, and I was thrilled with a happy customer — and gorgeous before-and-after pictures to show future clients. My best friend Rivky trusted me enough, sight unseen, to refer me to her sister-in-law, who in turn blindly trusted me to organize her kitchen, coat closet, and even her master bedroom. Her house went through an unbelievable transformation, and she’s still so warmly appreciative every time she sees me, all these years later. The outpouring of support and trust was overwhelming. I

DIVIDE AND CONQUER Drawer dividers come in every height and size and are amazing tools to compartmentalize drawer space and keep everything where it belongs.

ORGANIZE ME Q: I get that the house looks much nicer when everything is put away behind closed doors and all the surfaces are clear. But we’re a large family, and we have a lot of stuff that lives out on the counter. It doesn’t make sense to put away things that are constantly in use: sponges, towels, soap, brushes, mouthwash, creams, hair accessories, perfumes, pens, makeup, keys, coins... How do I keep the surfaces neat and still be able to reach everything easily? A: A home is not a museum. For items that are always out on the counter, keep them on the counter — organized. Get a countertop caddy for toothbrushes, cups, toothpaste, and designate the spot where it lives on the counter. If the bows and brushes are going to live on the bathroom vanity, get a pretty basket to keep them contained. It’s okay if your home looks like people live in it! You can keep things accessible without being messy.

TAKE IT HOME literally built my business on the foundation of that love and support. It still moves me when I think about it. These people gave me more than business. More than the clients, more than the billable hours, they gave me chizuk. They believed in me, so I believed in myself. Their wholehearted support is what enabled me to stick it out and be successful. Owning my own business was hard work. I was unprepared for the amount of responsibility I needed to carry. There was an entire back end of the business that I had never done before: client acquisition, customer management, purchasing, billing, administration. But I was all in; there was no flaking out. I developed a mantra I repeated to myself over and over: There’s always Plan B. If Plan A didn’t work out, I’d create a Plan B. If a container didn’t fit, or a client didn’t like what I was doing, I breathed deeply and clung tight to the words “plan B.” This problem-solving attitude worked well for my clients, who essentially hired me to solve their housekeeping problems, and it worked well for me, keeping me goal-oriented and positive. I felt Hashem at my side, and I’d send up a small tefillah before beginning each project, asking Hashem for success. I was working hard, but I was loving it. By three months in, I had my eight very happy customers and a flourishing business. And when someone I knew casually told me that she’d started selling homemade sourdough, I instantly became her customer. Even though I’d been happily buying sourdough from the grocery, I knew how important support was. Now we love her bread, and I pay her kid a dollar to deliver it every week. It feels great to pass it on.

Before setting out to organize your house, make a plan. A feasible one! When I say “make a plan,” I mean that you should actually write it out on paper. Write a list of all rooms and what will be kept in each room. Or write a list of all storage areas and what will be stored where. You also need to decide on a budget. That will guide your choices about what kind of bins or containers you will purchase. Now you’re ready to start! Choose one room to begin with. Then follow the steps we talked about previously: remove all the items from the space and gather them in one area, such as a table or bed. Sort through the items and discard as much as you can. Then arrange the remaining items on the available space, in containers that allow for easy access and visibility. And finally, label. Pro tip: Don’t bite off more than you can chew, which in this case means don’t “disorganize” more than you can organize within a reasonable amount of time. For example, if you’re working on a bedroom and you empty both closets, the dresser, the night table, and the space under the bed, but don’t have enough time to sort, containerize, store and label everything, you’re going to be living with a mess until it gets done. Account for that in advance. Enjoy the process. And don’t forget to take a step back when you’re done to admire the transformation!

Have an organizing question? Send it to comments@thebpview.com and look for it in this space!

Ascent OUT OF THE QUICKSAND

NO GOING BACK “The nightmare isn’t over. When the sirens go off, we have 30 seconds to grab baby Moshe and 3-year-old Chaim and make sure the older ones are all inside the safe room. We shut the door, just in time for the dreaded boom. It always sounds too close. “The safe room brings back the fear of terrorists close by.” Mrs Segal is a mother of 7 living in Ofakim. She almost breaks when she says, “We wish we could turn back the clock and take the trauma out of our children.” There is no unseeing terrorists landing with paragliders close to your home.

NO WAY FORWARD The families of Ofakim are crying for help. They are struggling to adapt to their new reality. The sounds of war planes and airstrikes have become their daily soundtrack. Ofakim, once a safe haven for Toradik families, changed forever. Schools are not reopening. As days turn into weeks, there is no end in sight. On top of all the fear, is the reality of lost income, no business, and financial ruin for many.

NO RELIEF The Segals, and many other families in Ofakim, have no choice but to live in the madness that is war. The govern ment offered them a short hotel stay but all they long for is to live with peace and without fear.

RESPONSE As a member of Klal Yisrael, when you heard the news, you were shocked and felt your mouth gape in horror. You felt the pain of your brothers and sisters from afar; an echo of the pain we all know too well. You want to know how to help. You want to reach out and ease the pain. You can help revive the community with your support. There is something meaningful and important that you can do.

TOGETHER WE CAN Ezras Yakov stepped up and distributed 4000 packages of food to families in Ofakim. Complete with grape juice, canned tuna, and vegetables; staples to feed entire families. Many more families need our help and we can give it, with your support. The families of Ofakim are not alone because we are an Am Echad! Show them you care. From your heart to theirs, from you directly to their table! Ezras Yakov has zero overhead costs. Your donation will go straight to struggling, war-impacted families in Ofakim. DONATE NOW:

here’s nothing quite as cozy as snuggling up and reading under the warm light of a lamp. Lamps can be useful or decorative, extravagant or basic. Let’s explore a collection of unique lamps and their stories.

LAMPS, LAMPS, EVERYWHERE You can tell where you are by the lamp on the table, because every country’s style is unique. From Turkish mosaic lamps to Chinese lamps with engraved drawings; from French country style floor lamps with large lampshades to the American-born banker’s lamp with a green lampshade and pull cord, every lamp tells the story of a different culture.

THE LAMPLIGHTER Back in the olden days, streets in many cities were lit at night by gas lights. That meant that each individual streetlamp had to be manually lit, every night. That’s where the lamplighter came in. The lamplighter’s job was to go around as the sun set and light every lamp. An average lamplighter lit 70 to 80 lamps every night. They walked around with their ladder and climbed up to light each lamp. Then, at dawn, they would return to extinguish the lamps.

Chaya Beer

NEVER EXTINGUISHED – THE ETERNAL LAMP Every shul has a ner tamid near the aron kodesh. “Ner tamid” translates quite literally as the “eternal lamp.” It’s called that because the ner tamid is constantly kept burning, and is never extinguished. Although many shuls have switched to electric lamps today, there are still those that keep an actual fire burning, as a kavod for the Shechinah.

THE TIFFANY LAMP TALE You may have read about Tiffany lamps in books, but what exactly is a Tiffany lamp? Tiffany lamps were created by the company Tiffany and Co. in the twentieth century, when stained-glass design was in style. Every Tiffany lamp was made out of hundreds of pieces of colored glass that were handcrafted into beautiful designs based on nature, like flowers and dragonflies. While the look of these colorful lamps is quite old-fashioned, vintage styles are bound to make a comeback. Tiffany lamps have started becoming popular again in the last few years, with the old-time designs being reproduced once more.

LUXURIOUS LAMP If you had $2.8 million dollars, would you spend it on a lamp? The most expensive lamp in the world, called the Pink Lotus Tiffany Lamp, sold at auction for $2.8 million. Why so much? It’s a handmade lamp that was ordered by special commission. That means that there is no other lamp quite like this one in the world. It’s beautifully designed, with eight glass lotus flowers and a bronze base. The next time someone knocks over a lamp, you can be happy it wasn’t this one!

IS YOUR LAMP KOSHER? It’s Shabbos, and your bedroom is dark. You fumble for your lens case, but you can’t find it. Squinting in the little light that comes in from the hallway or from the moon in the window isn’t very effective. Enter the Shabbos KosherLamp, created by Kosher Innovations. This lamp is specifically designed for Shabbos use: You can leave the lamp on so you have light when you want it, and simply turn the cover to block the light when you want to go to sleep.

Sippurei tzaddikim is one of the hallmarks and foundations of mesorah and of implanting emunah into our hearts and the hearts of our children... When it comes to tales of emunah, bitachon, middos, and gadlus b'Torah, nobody told stories like RAV KALMAN KROHN ZT"L . Rav Kalman's stories weren't just ma'asalech. His sippurei tzaddikim, like his own essence, were saturated with yiras Shamayim, middos tovos, and Torah lessons. Many of the stories Rav Kalman related are not well-known, yet they are all sourced in mesorah and the sefarim hakedoshim. And they are all action-packed, full of heart-stopping twists and turns that may well cause readers to get the goosebumps! In this book, we present a sampling of some of Rav Kalman's best stories for readers of all ages, to learn from and enjoy. Sink yourself into these amazing true tales, and let their power - and that of Rav Kalman's own neshamah - capture and enrapture you.

A NOVEL. Neil Grossman, a successful neurosurgeon and dedicated father, seems to have it all - until he meets the opportunity of a lifetime. Will his frenetic race to the top cost him his family, his integrity, his health - and ultimately, his career? Batya, his daughter, is stuck in the shidduch system. Will she become another statistic because her father's ambitions are on a collision course with her future?... Be enthralled by Hospital Corridors, a medical drama written in the refreshing and inimitable style of noted author YAEL MERMELSTEIN.
