As our community’s voices in Albany and the City Council, we sadly know firsthand the animosity and hatred directed at the Jewish community. We see the hatred and we fight it every day. When our community here, in Israel and throughout the world is under attack, our achdus is more important than ever. IN PERILOUS TIMES, WE CANNOT BE COMPLACENT! Our voice is strengthened by our election turnout. WE MUST STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM EVERY SINGLE VOTE! Sincerely, Senator Simcha Felder

Councilman Kalman Yeger

Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein

YOUR VOTE IS OUR VOICE! Early Voting: EVERY DAY through Sunday, November 5th (hours vary daily)

Your child will read. Fluently. Reach out to hear how.

School is a challenging place for a little boy with anxiety. The highlight of Moishy’s week is his session at Sipuk Clinic. The beautiful facility and team of expert therapists are impressive, but for Hamaspik of Kings County it’s not enough. Bright playrooms, stocked from floor to ceiling with colorful, therapeutic toys, and specially trained staff, make up Sipuk’s play therapy division. This division, built just for children like Moishy, gives him the opportunity to express himself and heal in the way he knows best – play.

It’s the extra mile like the play therapy division that makes all the difference.

(Re: Inbox, Bins on a Budget, Issue 206) This letter is for Mrs. Bins on a Budget: I love your ideas for being organized without spending money, but I personally avoid using cardboard boxes as containers because I believe they attract roaches. Many apartment buildings have roach problems; my apartment is roach-free, and I want it to stay that way. Still, you don’t have to buy expensive containers in expensive stores. I buy them in dollar stores and even in the grocery store – plastic bins that may not be decorative

(Re: The Greatest Gift, Inbox, Issue 206) I’ve been following the letters about girls who don’t know how to daven in shul. There’s been a lot of blame and finger-pointing as to whose responsibility it is to teach girls how to daven b’tzibbur. My suggestion is that everyone do their part. Parents, even if you are unable to go to shul, teach your children shul etiquette: what to say and how, when to stand or sit, and the particulars of the minhagim in your shul. Teachers, even if there is no official “shul curriculum,” before Yamim Tovim, take some time to walk your students through the davening, and teach them what to do. Maybe shul rebbetzins could even create a class for girls ages twelve through fifteen to teach them the ins and outs of davening in shul. Heilige Yiddishe mamas, if there was ever a time that Klal Yisroel needed our tefillos, the time is now. Go with your daughters to shul if you can. If you can’t, ask a shul-goer to sit near them so they can follow along and learn how to daven in shul. Thank you, Weekly Shul Goer In the Days Before I Had Children art & soul + bleulinedesign.com

WALK THE WALK

(Re: First Offense, Issue 205) To the team at The Boro Park View: Again and again — and again! — you continue to produce a quality product that is entertaining, informative and appropriate for the frum community. The article about cars was very interesting, and I found the part about gas stations and their history enlightening. May I suggest, to complement the sidebar listing driving offenses and their fines, an article on the responsibility of pedestrians. They’re also obligated to follow certain rules. And my informal survey of drivers and pedestrians indicates that such education and information is sorely lacking. Again, yasher koach for your great work. Zvi Benaska

I’ve been teaching limudei kodesh in a girls’ elementary school for many years. I work very hard, and baruch Hashem, I love my job. It’s a zechus and a privilege to teach Hashem’s kinderlach. I always knew that my salary could never adequately compensate me for my work, but I accepted that fact with a tefillah to the Ribbono Shel Olam to protect me from the outside world, and I gained chizuk from the knowledge that “umatzdikei harabbim k’kochavim” refers to melamdei tinokos. But recently, a friend of mine who teaches math to high school girls let slip what her pay per teaching period is. And it left me shocked and confused. I always thought that my salary was low because the mosdos simply don’t have the funds to pay teachers better. But my friend the math teacher is making double my salary! Elementary school teachers invest physical and emotional energy every minute of their day. For young girls, a teacher is their mother figure away from home. A typical day finds me singing and doing exercise songs, rejoicing when a tooth falls out, patiently listening to tales of baby siblings’ pranks, serving lunch, tying shoelaces, and teaching my students how to do it themselves next time. And that’s besides the crammed curriculum that was entrusted to me to cover. I teach crucial, core subjects such as reading and writing and monitor each student closely to ensure their progress and success. I teach subjects that serve as the foundation of a Bas Yisroel, such as Chumash, parsha, halacha, and peirush hamilos. Before every Yom Tov, I teach my students about the avodah of that Yom Tov, instilling in them a love for Hashem’s Torah and mitzvos. I make sure to keep my lessons exciting and to stimulate my students’ minds. And I don’t neglect those who need extra help, following up with their mentors or tutors on my own break time. A few times a week I spend significant time on the phone with parents of my students (who expect me to be immediately available and to tackle whatever the issue is immediately), and often I’ll cover the cost of rewards or incentive programs out of my own pocket. I accept all this as my job, and I value the work I do, and I consider myself lucky and privileged to do it. And I know and believe Hashem has infinite ways to send me parnassah. But to hear that the schools can pay better… and simply don’t? This makes me feel like my work is not valued and my sacrifice is for no purpose. PARSHAS VAYEIRA A Heart of Chesed

THE TORAH DESCRIBES the quintessential amud hachesed, Avraham Avinu, and tells of how he hosted guests on the third day after his bris. Hakadosh Baruch Hu came to pay him a sick visit on that day, which is when pain is expected to peak. Knowing that Avraham was liable to forget about himself and rush to do for others, Hashem removed the sun from its encasement, creating a heat beyond human comprehension, so no one would venture outdoors or travel. This meant no guests to burden Avraham. But Avraham would not give up, and he himself went out in search of visitors. This raises wonder. Obviously, there was nobody out who needed his favors, and he was in no condition to be active. He was certainly exempt from the mitzvah of hachnasas orchim! Why did Avraham exert himself to such a degree? Avraham Avinu’s acts of chesed were not inspired by compassion or pity. He did not do good for others because he was bothered by their pain; rather, he did good because he loved doing the actual chesed. His heart overflowed with chesed; it was an inseparable part of his being. Thus, even when he was exempt on all fronts, he could not relax even for a moment. How could a day pass without chesed? This is the highest form of chesed — not from pity, but from love. Such chesed finds expression when one does good at his own expense — when one gives of himself and is literally moser nefesh to do for others. This was what Avraham taught us when he ran out to look for guests even when he was sick, and personally took care of them with exemplary care and generous hosting.

his fellow rosh yeshivah had come to London to raise funds for his own yeshivah. Presumably, he had arrived in shul to hear and see for himself how the Ponovezher Rav was so successful at the same task. The crowd listened to the Ponevezher’s address and was inspired. After the speech, they gathered around the Ponovezher Rav, ready to hand him their donations. To their surprise, the Rav pointed toward Rav Neiman. “Look, the Rosh Yeshivah is sitting there. You can give him your donations,” he said simply. Those in attendance were stunned. On another occasion, one of the Ponovezher Rav’s close as-

* * * * * On a fundraising trip to London to gain fundamental support for his growing yeshivah, the renowned Ponevezher Rav, Rav Yosef Shlomo Kahanemen, zt”l, made an appeal in shul one morning, delivering a powerful speech to the large crowd of community members who had gathered. While speaking, he noticed one particular listener sitting to the side. It was Rav Yakov Neiman, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivah of Ohr Yisrael in Petach Tikvah. The Rav immediately realized that 62

sistants had his eye on a particular donor. He invested hours of effort and pulled many strings to secure an appointment for the Rav. He knew that this wealthy individual had the means to give a substantial donation. Finally, after several attempts, he was told that the Rav could meet with the potential donor — for just a few minutes. The Ponovezher Rav warmly greeted the donor, who happened to be quite unlearned. “Where does your family come from?” he asked. “From Slabka.” The man stumbled over the word, hardly able to recall the name of the city his father grew up in. “Do you mean to say you come from Slabodka?” the Rav asked. The patron’s face lit up. “Yes, yes!” He remembered hearing that his father had learned in the yeshivah of the Alter of Slabodka, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, zt”l. As soon as the Rav heard that the man came from Slabodka, he said, “Nu! Why should you give your donation to Yeshivas Ponovezh? Right near us, in Bnei Brak, they are in the middle of establishing a new Yeshivas Slabodka! If you have a connection to Slabodka, you should really give the funds to them. This will give you the chance to help the yeshivah start out!”

“Does Hakadosh Baruch Hu have only one son? Do you think that in Hashem’s books, only Ponovezh Yeshivah exists?” The Rav’s assistant, who had worked so hard to get this appointment, closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. He couldn’t watch the Rav simply give up the donation for their yeshivah. True, the fledgling Slabodka needed all the support it could get, but they had come for their own yeshivah, and Ponovezh was in no great shape either. In fact, it was on the verge of closing down! As they left the man’s office, the assistant couldn’t help but ask the Rav in a pained voice, “After all our efforts?! This man could have helped the yeshivah so much! Why give it away?” The Rav didn’t understand the question. “Does Hakadosh Baruch Hu have only one son? Do you think that in Hashem’s books, only Ponovezh Yeshivah exists? Clearly, if there’s a chance that this man will give a nicer donation because of his connection to Slabodka, with more heart and more desire, then that comes first!” As it happened, the donor gave the entire amount he had intended to give to the Ponovezher Yeshivah to the Slabodka Yeshivah instead. But the Rav’s joy was beyond limit. Whether the yeshivah that benefited was under his direction or not made no difference to him. * * * * *

This is the art of chesed. The greatest proof that a chesed does not stem from pity, but rather from an inner desire to do chesed, is when one is happy to help another even at personal expense. Shlomo Hamelech expresses this in Mishlei (25:3): “V’lev melachim ein cheker.” A person can merit having the heart of a king, who has the power to give without boundaries or calculations.

IDF Intelligence: Hamas Hiding Primary Headquarters Under Gaza Hospital Confirming long held rumors, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces announced last week that Hamas is hiding its main headquarters under the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip. According to reports, Hamas has multiple facilities housed under Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, and hundreds of Hamas terrorists hid there after the horrific Shemini Atzeres attack. With a staff of approximately 4,000 and roughly 1,500 patients, the hospital is being used as a massive human shield, said Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari of the IDF. Multiple tunnels have been identified that lead to the underground base, with one entrance located within one of the hospital’s wards. A Hamas command center located under the hospital has been used both as a storage house for weapons as well as a command center for rocket attacks.

The news comes during a week when anti-Israel and antiJewish protests have escalated. In New York, approximately 50 students were barricaded inside the library for their own safety at one college as pro-Palestinian protestors stormed school security. The group banged on windows and yelled anti-Jewish slogans as they passed by the library, leaving about a dozen Jewish students in the library fearing for their safety and repeatedly calling 911 for help. While the NYPD initially denied that there was any protest, videos circulated showing quite the opposite. According to the New York Post, attorney general Gerard Filitti slammed the NYPD for allegedly being slow to respond to calls for help made from the library, and said that criminal charges should be pressed against the demonstrators. Just three days later, 7,000 pro-Palestinian protestors turned out at the Brooklyn Bridge and called for Israel to be destroyed while voicing their support for the murder of innocent civilians on October 7. Police shut down the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge as a precaution, with nearly 2,000 officers called to the rally site. Several police cars were damaged during the rally, while others were graffitied as protestors openly expressed their hatred for the NYPD.

proximately 8:30 a.m. The driver of the car got out of his vehicle, moved the injured child to the side of Dahill Road so that he could drive around him, and then fled the accident scene. The entire incident was captured on the school bus’s surveillance camera, giving Shomrim volunteers both the make and model of the car as well as its license plate number. The information was sent out to all of the group’s members. The boy was treated at the scene by the bus driver, a Hatzolah member, and was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery for a broken femur. A Shomrim member spotted the car in a parking lot two days later at a McDonald Avenue storage facility located at Avenue J and called for backup. Shomrim volunteers waited at the vehicle for police, who arrested the driver.

Serial Boro Park Burglar Headed to Prison A Brooklyn man who may be responsible for more than 24 burglaries in and around Boro Park will be spending several years in jail, thanks to the diligent efforts of Shomrim volunteers. Hamodia reported that 41-year-old Salvador Fuentes pleaded guilty last week to third-degree burglary for two incidents that took place on September 3, 2022. Fuentes allegedly stole $5,000 from an apartment located at 50th Street at 12th Avenue, fleeing via the fire escape. Less than an hour later, he entered a multifamily house on 57th Street and 13th Avenue, making off with two gold bracelets, a gold watch, earrings and a pearl bracelet. Shomrim members spent hours reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of capturing the burglar, who they believed was responsible for both incidents as well as many others that took place over that summer and the previous summer. Fuentes, who had previously been jailed on burglary charges, was arrested a year ago when he reported to his parole officer. Fuentes will be back before a judge on January 9 and is expected to be sentenced to three and a half to seven years in jail.

Anywhere But Here: NYC’s Latest Attempt To Mitigate Migrant Crisis Overwhelmed by a seemingly never-ending stream of migrants arriving in the Big Apple, Mayor Eric Adams is taking a new approach to the crisis, offering free one-way plane tickets anywhere in the world for asylum seekers. New York City opened what it called a “reticketing center,” steering those who have reached their maximum allowable stay at city shelters to the East Village site. The New York Post reported that multiple migrants said that they arrived at the address they were given expecting to find housing, not city employees dispensing travel advice. Adams described the move as part of the city’s plan to help asylum seekers move elsewhere, as the flow of migrants shows no sign of abating any time soon. With the city paying $380 a night to house asylum seekers in its shelters, the cost of buying plane tickets anywhere in the world is a cheaper alternative and will open up shelter space for new arrivals. 72

While some migrants have booked tickets, heading to locations as far away as Morocco, others have been less than pleased to be evicted from the shelters and told to choose a new destination. A 30-year-old named Jimmy said he had no intention of leaving New York, with the airfare program leaving them potentially stranded in a new location. “They have no rooms for us or anything… just the tickets,” said Jimmy. “They can’t help with anything else. We are worried because we’ve been sleeping in the streets for four days.” Jimmy expressed hope that he and his friends could find jobs so that they could afford to rent a room before the cold weather sets in. Acknowledging that the city had run out of room to house asylum seekers, Adams slashed the maximum number of days that a single adult male migrant could stay in city shelters from 60 to 30 in an effort to create more space. Once discharged from a shelter, migrants have to reapply to be allowed back in the system, but according to City Hall data, fewer than 20 percent of the migrants who were given a vacate notice reapplied to return to city-run shelters.

Cheers and Jeers as United Rolls Out New Boarding Protocols United Airlines’ “Fly the friendly skies” motto is being put to the test, now that the airline is using a new boarding system that will potentially separate families and leave aisle seat passengers scrambling for overhead storage space. United rolled out its new boarding system for its economy travelers on October 26. Known as WILMA, the system first boards passengers with window seats, followed by those located in the middle seats. Those with aisle seats will be boarded last, a move that United says will get planes out of the gate air faster during the upcoming busy travel season. Fox Business reported that while some applauded the move, others, particularly those who favor aisle seats, were less than pleased; overhead storage space limitations mean that those who board later may be forced to check their carry-on bags. United has said that it is retrofitting its plane with larger overhead bins to create enough space for all flyers to store their carry-on luggage, even those in later boarding groups, but those

changes will not be rolled out across the board until 2026. The process would also force families with children to take their seats in the final group if they want to board the plane together. The new system would still allow for pre-boarding, with first class passengers allowed on board in group one and business class passengers in group two. Regular economy passengers would board next, with window, middle and aisle seat passengers taking up groups three, four and five respectively, and the dreaded group six left for basic economy passengers and those without an assigned boarding group. Feedback to the airline has been mixed. Some fliers believe WILMA is “an awful idea,” and that it’s “time to switch to Delta.” But others say “it’s about time” boarding a plane became more organized. Time will tell whether the idea takes off.

Straphangers arriving at three New York City subway stations will notice something new on the platforms: yellow safety barriers, designed to keep people off the tracks. The devices are being installed mid-platform at the L line’s Bedford Avenue station, the F line’s 57th Street stop and the J line’s Crescent Street station. Plans are also in place for platform doors to be tested at other lines in Manhattan. Upping rider safety at all 472 subway stations is challenging, given the many different layouts involved, but MTA chairman Janno Lieber said that his agency is working on plans to ensure greater safety. “Irrespective of the engineering challenges of the platform doors, we want to keep people from getting on the tracks,” said Lieber. “That is the key.” The MTA has already installed cameras and other devices at several subway stations, which monitor live footage and can send alerts directly to station crews. It has also equipped

some of its trains with front-mounted cameras that could stop the train completely if there are any track intrusions. According to an MTA study, only 27% of its stations are suited to having platform doors installed, which could cost $7 billion to install and $100 million to maintain.

Hochul Signs Legislation Expanding Sunday Alcohol Sale Hours A package of bills signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul will give New Yorkers a wider window of opportunity to purchase wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages on Sundays, and will also offer benefits to small business owners. Under the new laws, New Yorkers will be able to purchase alcoholic beverages in liquor and wine stores beginning at 10 on Sunday mornings, a full two hours earlier than under the previous regulations. According to the New York Almanack, the area that is now New York State prohibited all Sunday alcohol sales in 1656. The ban was voided by a New York State Supreme Court justice in 1976 on the grounds that it was rarely enforced by police, was routinely disregarded by businesses, and was constitutionally defective. According to the governor’s office, the new legislation is intended to update antiquated liquor laws. Bill sponsor Assemblyman Harry Bronson said that it leveled the playing field for liquor stores by allowing them to sell alcohol during hours that alcohol can be served in bars and restaurants. Other changes to state liquor laws include allowing beer, cider and similar beverages to be sold on Sundays, extending the length of brewer’s licenses from one to three years, and allowing businesses to prepare and store alcoholic drinks in pressurized dispensing machines. “Across New York, breweries, distilleries and other alcoholic beverages businesses are creating jobs and expanding economic opportunity,” said Hochul. “I’m proud to sign this legislation that will modernize the laws governing the sales of alcoholic beverages in New York.”

ESTY HELLER

CHAPTER 29 Bubby Miller hosts Chevi and Fraidy together for Shabbos.

S

o, no, the Shabbos at Bubby hadn’t magically turned the girls into BFFs. So much for her mother’s clever

trick. Fraidy didn’t want to talk about what had happened, but it was obvious the minute she stepped into the house that something had happened. Riva knew not to pressure her, even if she was plotzing to know what it was. According to her mother, the girls had a wonderful time. “I have to tell you,” she said, “your Fraidy is one clever girl. She beat me at Splendor, and I can’t say it was my finest moment.” Whatever had happened, Fraidy was still sulking on Sunday, and Riva could only grit her teeth — and distract her. “Do you want to help me cook?” Riva offered. A distraction wasn’t a solution, but if it served as a painkiller, that was good, too.

“Fine,” Fraidy said. She normally jumped at cooking opportunities, but this time it sounded like she was doing Riva a favor. And maybe she was, if it got her to cheer up. “Great! I want to do a little cooking for the anniversary. I’m planning to make some vegetable orzo. Can you fill this pot with water, please?” Vegetable orzo, Riva believed, ranked on top of the list of Smartest Sides. It didn’t require a hundred steps, it didn’t call for bizarre or overpriced ingredients, and it froze well. And the best part was, if she quintupled the recipe, she’d have enough for the anniversary, plus she’d be able to set some aside for her own family for Shavuos. Win, win, win, win. With the kids playing with Playmobil in the dining room, Fraidy babysitting the sautéing vegetables, and the water for the orzo already sitting on the fire, Riva sat down with a notepad.

Sesame chicken, pepper steak – done. Potato kugel, Yerushalmi kugel – Bashie. Vegetable orzo – check. Without doing much, she’d cut five dishes off the caterer’s list. How many dishes did they need in total? Ten? Twelve? She wrote the word MENU in large block letters on the next page of her notepad and drew check boxes going down. Then she listed items. Brisket rollups (or other meat?) Naval pastrami Rice and mushrooms Cabbage and noodles Roasted vegetables Green beans (or is one vegetable side enough?) Franks in blanks They should probably do one more special dish. Maybe Lani’s gnocchi with pulled beef recipe, in that heavenly wine cream sauce. That was really, really delicious, and not so hard to make. Wait, why was she even thinking make? Were they making or ordering? Well… Riva looked at the list. It made no sense to order franks in blanks. They could just buy the frozen ones and bake them. She scanned the rest of the list. Rice and mushrooms, cabbage and noodles — those were easy dishes, and maybe they didn’t even need both if they had the vegetable orzo. Tzippy zoomed past her feet, driving her Playmobil bus. Rolls. They needed rolls. An idea entered her mind. Could she have a little chutzpah? She didn’t allow herself to waver. She hunted around for her phone and dialed her aunt Chanie Lipshutz. “You baked such delicious rolls for our Chanukah party, Chanie, and you know, mitzvah goreres mitzvah. Can I honor you to bake the rolls for my parents’ anniversary party?” Her aunt laughed. “Sure, sure. Of course. I’ll do those mini buns with assorted toppings. What else can I help you with? How about a good roast?” “Uh, if you’re offering…” “I am. I’ll do two of the same, okay?” “You’re such a tzadeikes.” She really was. The catering cost was shrinking with every homemade dish. Lani was going to be so relieved. “It smells like a restaurant in here. What are you cooking?” “Yaakov! Hey! I didn’t hear you come in.” Yaakov stirred the vegetables and sniffed. “Fancy supper. No leftovers from Shabbos?” “Not supper. I decided to open a catering business.” She ripped open the first package of orzo and poured it into the bubbling water. “Forget architecture, forget cleaning crews.

WHY WAS SHE PLANNING THIS MENU ON HER OWN? SHOULDN’T LANI BE INVOLVED IN THIS? IT WAS THEIR PARENTS’ PARTY; THEY SHOULD BE PLANNING AND DOING EVERYTHING TOGETHER

We’re in the wrong line of business, Yaakov. Did you ever realize how insane the markup on catering is?” “That’s with every service industry. Including architectural drawing and cleaning crews, by the way.” He probably had a point. She ripped open the last package and lowered the flame. Yaakov took out the jar of coffee and a hot cup. “So are you and Lani cooking this whole event?” “No, not really. I mean, I didn’t even discuss it with her. I just, like, made a few things, that’s all.” “Oh, okay. Whatever.” He finished making his coffee and slapped a lid over the cup. “I’m running out to class. See you later. Save me a portion, okay?” Riva tiptoed to retrieve her sieve, and wondered. Why was she planning this menu on her own? Shouldn’t Lani be involved in this? It was their parents’ party; they should be planning and doing everything together. The orzo looked done. Riva lifted the pot and slowly poured the contents into the sieve in the sink. “Chevi made fun of my stutter,” Fraidy said suddenly. “And she warned me not to tell anyone in our class that we spent Shabbos

together in Bubby’s house.” “Oh, really?” “What does she have against me?” Her voice was completely broken. Riva turned the water on with force. Maybe she and Lani should plan this party together. But she had no desire to talk to her sister. *****

“Can we talk numbers?” Chaim Tzvi was driving Lani over to Party City to restock on some of her breakfast packing supplies. “A million? Two million? What size numbers do you want to talk about? And what’s your cause?” “Please, Chaim Tzvi, stop. I’m serious. I’m looking at these Mother Hen orders. If I continue at this rate, do you think we could continue building in another month or two? Even if we move forward at a slower pace, we’ll at least move along somewhat.” Chaim Tzvi squeezed into a parking spot. “Hmm?” Lani prodded. “What? Yeah, whatever.” “What whatever? Does that sound realistic? Should we tell Andy?”

“We’ll see,” he said brusquely. “Do you want to try to do this quickly? I’ll wait in the car, I have some calls to make.” She blinked at him in surprise, but he just frowned down at his phone. With a stab in her chest, she slipped out of the car. In Party City, it was hard to focus on blister bowls, baking cups and ribbons. She had been thinking to make a few changes to her current packaging — maybe even order custom boxes and ribbons with her logo instead of the stickers she’d been using until then — but with Chaim Tzvi’s cold tone echoing in her ears, her creativity vanished. Back in the car, Lani sat in her seat, brooding. “Yeah, so you were asking about Andy,” Chaim Tzvi broke through the silence. “Can I tell you something, Lani?” She grunted. “I want our house to be done just as badly as you do. Do you think I enjoy living in the basement?” Lani was quiet, tense. He turned on the ignition and gripped the steering wheel tightly. “Sometimes…” he started. “Sometimes I wonder if you realize that.” *****

“Mrs. Stroh?” So much for unobtrusive entrances. Riva grimaced. Leaving early was usually less complicated than arriving late, because when she wanted to leave, she could gauge the atmosphere, know where all the players stood, time her

escape. Arriving late was a blind jump. Nothing was as awful as walking into a pin-drop silent office and being attacked by questioning eyes. But she’d had no choice. Machla Zimmer had switched Fraidy’s slot to 9:00 in the morning for the next two weeks, and if that meant showing up late to work, what could she do? Her boss was craning his neck from his desk at the other end of the room, trying to see around the computer screens. Riva dumped her bag onto her desk and stood up. “Yes?” “Can I have a word with you?” Walking out the door of the office behind her boss was like stepping into a courtroom. Mr. Gabioff leaned against the hallway wall, bending one knee so that the bottom of his shoe rested on the wall. Riva stood a few feet away, arms dangling at her sides. She concentrated on keeping her gaze steady. He’s just a person. He can’t hurt me. I won’t allow him to hurt me. She replayed the words in her head, urging them to penetrate, but they remained meaningless words, ineffective, while she waited and waited and waited for her boss to start talking. Her arms grew heavier at her sides, and it was becoming impossible to hold her gaze. Finally, abruptly, Mr. Gabioff straightened his foot, his shoe coming down with a sharp click. “I’ve noticed that you’ve been taking a lot of time off from work lately.” It was a statement. A classic Mr. G. statement, one that made you squirm

and wonder if it was really meant to be a question or if the purpose was to simply dig through any armor you may have attempted to put on. And like most of his statements, he repeated it — twice — in the exact same low, slow tone of voice. “I’ve noticed that you’ve been taking a lot of time off from work lately.” Pause. “I’ve noticed that you’ve been taking a lot of time off from work lately.” She should have seen this coming. The clarity felt almost surreal. She knew what the next statement would be. The next statement was going to be it. Her dull dismissal. A soft, soundless, nontheatrical closing of a book. Story over. The end. Interestingly, she felt perfectly calm. Ready. Her boss squinted one eye so that the creases on his forehead rose and fell like neat little waves. “I assume there’s something going on in your life,” he said, still in a monotone. “You don’t have to tell me what it is, it doesn’t matter. I just wanted to tell you, don’t worry about your work hours. I know you’re not trying to take advantage, and I know you don’t come late or leave early to go party. We all have our things; go ahead and take care of whatever you have to take care of. I hope everything works out well.” He stood in his spot for another brief moment, gave a small nod, and strode back into the office. TO BE CONTINUED…

For years, you run nonstop. Then the nest empties out. It’s a whole new stage of life — but how do you make the most of it?

Y

ears ago, long before my nest was empty, a friend bluntly advised me to “get a life.” I took her very seriously. We all hope and pray that one day, with Hashem’s help, each of our children will marry and leave home to build their own families. It’s a major transition, and not always a simple one. But ultimately, this new chapter can — and should — be a fabulous stage in your life’s journey. Until now, your time wasn’t your own; a mother’s day never ends. For many women, this stage is the first time in decades that they have time for themselves. Now’s the time to ask yourself: What makes me sing? What do I love? What am I passionate about? If you don’t know, travel back several decades. As a teenager, what animated you? What brought joy to your life? It’s an opportunity once again, once again, to pursue those activities.

You might feel like you’ve lost your routine. Sit down and create a schedule for yourself. Of course, you’ll include davening and hopefully Tehillim. Then what? For those of us blessed with spouses, we should be investing in this relationship. It’s never too late to begin spending time together. Can you manage to take a walk together with your spouse several times a week? Head out and enjoy the foliage together. He’s been waiting years to get your undivided attention. As we enter these empty nesting years, we find ourselves aging just a bit. We dare not neglect our health! Schedule your annual checkup and follow up on the doctor’s recommendations. Self care can become time-consuming, but it’s crucial. Be vigilant regarding your health. We all want to be healthy and independent until 120. We can certainly hope and pray, but we must also put in the effort.

NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO BE TIMID OR SHY. THE COMMUNITY STILL NEEDS YOU

Eat properly. Find an enjoyable exercise class. (Take a friend with you.) Start a dance class. Go swimming. Walk. Keep moving. And how about some serious Torah learning? There are so many phenomenal classes available today, accessible from the privacy of our homes. But if you can join a live class, go for it. It’s wonderful to meet likeminded women, and the social factor is crucial: Research has

L I E B E R M A N N

shown that people who maintain a full social life fare better in their senior years. Men meet their friends in shul and have chavrusos, but women have to be more creative in finding opportunities to socialize. People need to be needed. What role can you play in your community? Would you like to initiate a Rosh Chodesh gathering for your contemporaries? How about running a Tehillim group for your block, volunteering in a local yeshivah, or reading to the little ones on a regular basis? (If you’re not blessed with family nearby, “adopt” a family near you!) Are there seniors in your neighborhood who would appreciate a social visit? Are there young women who would benefit from your special brand of mentoring? Now is not the time to be timid or shy. The community needs you!

S

arah Chana Radcliffe, a psychologist, made an astute observation. We often find mothers who want to be involved in the lives of their children and grandchildren, and they are blessed with daughters who crave their independence and keep their distance. And then we find mothers who davka prefer not to be super involved in their kids’ lives. They’ve been waiting years to have time and space for themselves. But they’re blessed with children who desperately want them involved. We don’t always get what we want! Whichever the case, be aware that adult children need their space and privacy. Don’t overstep your boundaries. You cannot live vicariously through your children; create a full life for yourself, independent of your kids. Some mothers, whose children live locally, are busy hosting on Erev Shabbos and Shabbos. But you might discover that you’re actually fine relinquishing your role as hostess, and enjoy visiting your kids as an honored guest. There’s no right or wrong. We’re all created differently. As you get older and have less energy and stamina, adapt graciously. Learn to go with the flow. Are you blessed with children and grandchildren in your neighborhood? Try to spend quality time with each grandchild individually. Take a nature walk together, take a painting class together, play word games. Teach them your special skill — baking or playing piano or knitting, whatever it is. Schmooze about books you’ve both read (read books they’re interested in so you can do this). Take a teenage granddaugh-

ter with you along to shul on Shabbos morning. Invite the young ones to cook or bake with you in honor of Shabbos or Yom Tov. Host your grandchildren, one or two at a time, without their parents, for a Shabbos seudah. Quality time with a grandchild is a precious gift for both sides.

R

emember that you’re always modeling for your children, whether they’re young or have already reached adulthood. Demonstrate what kibud av va’eim looks like; if you’re blessed to have parents, or elderly aunts and uncles, now you can devote more time and attention to them. Let the next generation see you doing chesed. Get involved in shidduchim or tzedakos. Let your children and grandchildren see you daven. Have them answer amen to your brachos. We are the link between the generations. It’s our responsibility to keep these links strong. Help the younger generation develop a positive, upbeat approach to life. Help them reframe challenging situations. Your main role and responsibility is to pass down the mesorah, to pass on the torch. It’s a responsibility and a huge privilege. It’s not over just because your children no longer live in your home. With mindfulness, you can create a full and satisfying life — with nothing “empty” about it. I have mentors, older friends who have become my role models. I tell them, “I want to be just like you when I grow up!” You need a role model for this new stage. Choose a woman a bit older than yourself who is aging gracefully and gratefully. When my oldest daughter became a kallah, it went very fast, and I was in a state of shock. I went to shul that Shabbos and could not stop crying. A dear friend came over and said to me, “Miriam, just remember: The only One who’s with us from beginning to end is Hakadosh Baruch Hu.” Invest in that relationship. Expand your world. Make new friends, older and younger. Step out of your comfort zone. Life is an adventure. It’s not over yet.

YOUR MAIN ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY IS TO PASS DOWN THE MESORAH. IT’S NOT OVER JUST BECAUSE YOUR CHILDREN NO LONGER LIVE IN YOUR HOME

For many working women, there comes a point when they leave the workforce. Maybe their other responsibilities no longer allow it, or their financial circumstances free them to do so. But for some, the tide turns again, and they reenter the working world for a second round.

W

HAT DRIVES WOMEN TO GO BACK TO WORK? WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES — AND THE REWARDS? AND WHAT’S IT LIKE TO REJOIN THE WORKFORCE FIVE, TEN OR TWENTY YEARS LATER?

R I K I

G O L D S T E I N

WHY I WENT BACK TO WORK For stimulation. I wanted to use my brain. And I thought it was better not to wait too long; I’d heard that returnees to the workforce later in life can have a hard time finding jobs.

HOW I WENT BACK When my youngest was two, I was offered part-time work in a non-profit organization. I replied that I was happy to do it, on condition that I found a great playgroup for my child. Out of the blue, a friend called me saying that she was putting together a playgroup in her home and was looking for one or two more kids to join. Within a day it was all worked out, and I started working again. I slowly took on more responsibilities and hours as my little one grew up. Four years later, when my children were out more, I switched to a more full-time position.

TRAINING I taught myself to use computer programs as needed. I’d never touched email or Excel or Google Drive before my return to work, but I knew I liked computers and was open to learning.

WHY I CHOSE THIS JOB I liked the combination of the computer work together with the social aspect of dealing with a lot of people while arranging programs.

THE HARDEST PART For twenty years I was home, so if a child was sick, I could be there with them, no problem. That became much more complicated once I started working again. But seeing it was important to me, the company tried to be flexible

about my taking off or working remotely when a child was sick.

THE MOST REWARDING PART Working helps me structure my day, and my life, in a way it wasn’t when I was home all day.

MAKING IT WORK Once I started working again, I had much less time to do all the housework and cooking, so I had to become more efficient. I started making lists and buying ingredients in advance. When I’m working in the kitchen, I put items away immediately, while still holding them, so there’s no huge cleanup. Being organized really freed up a lot of my time.

WHAT I LEARNED I didn’t go back to work for financial reasons, but once I’d been working for a few years, I left my job for another position with better pay. Once you’re working, you may as well get paid as much as you can.

HOW IT WORKED OUT I loved both stages of my life. Being at home with the kids was nice, and my current work schedule is good for now. I was gratified when my older daughters told me recently that as kids they felt secure knowing that I was always available at home in case they were sick or needed something. It gave them a certain security and confidence.

TIRED BUT HAPPY NAME: WHY I WENT BACK TO WORK My youngest was nine, and I was drawn back to the special needs children I had loved in the past.

TRAINING I didn’t need any new training.

THE HARDEST PART Focusing completely on my own kids when they came home from school each day. Obviously, my own children are my first priority, but sometimes it gets hard not to think about work-related issues at home. I tried to set up my work schedule so that I could get home before my kids, with some time to switch gears before they all walk in. This was especially important since they were used to their mother always being home. I thought it would cause hurt and resentment if they came home to an empty house.

do things together, even if I didn’t always have the energy, or wasn’t in the mood.

WHAT I LEARNED You can only be a good stay-athome mom if you enjoy it. When I had my first baby, I realized that I had to step back from my job to be a good mother to my child. Over the next 25 years, I enjoyed every minute of playing with my kids. I was completely hands-on, always around, always available, having fun and even doing some crazy stuff together (my kids are very active!). Their friends used to hang out by us a lot, kids whose mothers were working and not as freely available. But for a woman who doesn’t enjoy being home with small children, this might not have worked so well.

HOW IT WORKED OUT

THE MOST REWARDING PART

It was wonderful. I started working as a trial, and I didn’t expect it to be so fulfilling.

To be able to do both, be a hands-on mother and an educator for special children, is very fulfilling.

WHAT I WISH I’D KNOWN

MAKING IT WORK Keeping a sense of humor, that helps. And being proactive in ensuring that your children should not, chas v’shalom, resent your job. I made a special effort to take the kids out, drive them places, and

THE ACCIDENTAL TEACHER HOW I WENT BACK Our community girls’ school was desperate for teachers and decided to look for experienced mothers to fill their open positions. I ran into the principal one day, when my youngest was seven, and she told me that they really needed me. Our conversation finished with her saying, “I’ll see you in school on Monday morning. You have to come.” I started out by supporting individual students, fourth and sixth graders. Then my sister-in-law became assistant principal. When the Pre-1A morah got sick and could not continue teaching, she set her sights on me to take over the class. I resisted because I felt I wasn’t a “real teacher,” but she was very persuasive and promised I’d only be there temporarily, like a month or so, until she found a replacement. I gave it a try. And I became a teacher. After twelve years in that classroom, I became the limudei kodesh principal. Then it became my job to find teachers!

TRAINING I had my degree, of course — but mostly I learned on the job.

THE HARDEST PART Getting out on time in the morning, every single day, no matter what.

THE MOST REWARDING PART The light in my students’ eyes when they understand something new.

The secret is compartmentalizing. At work, don’t think about home, and at home, don’t think about work. Well, I try; maybe I do think about work sometimes when I’m home.

HOW IT WORKED OUT

72

GAP: 20 years

JOB BEFORE: I was in college when my older children were born. When I finished my degree, I became a stay-athome mom.

I had never known I had it in me to be a teacher. The way I was roped in was min haShamayim and changed me, showing me my own strengths. In addition, the absorbing nature of my job ended up being a blessing when our family suffered a tragedy. I knew that if I hadn’t been working, I would have been home alone and constantly thinking about my loss. I was so grateful that I had a full working life. When I was at work, I could forget.

WHAT I LEARNED You have to be positive and find something that each child can do successfully; it doesn’t matter what. I remember one student who was weak at everything, but when she started drawing, I saw a flicker of talent. I made sure to compliment her, proving to her that she did have strengths, she was good at something. That knowledge changed her.

JOB AFTER: Teacher, then principal of an elementary school

I HAD NEVER KNOWN I HAD IT IN ME TO BE A TEACHER. THE EXPERIENCE CHANGED ME, SHOWING ME MY OWN STRENGTHS

AGE: 55

GAP: WHY I WENT BACK TO WORK THE MOST My youngest was no longer a baby, REWARDING and I wanted a more full-time job than PART teaching. Also, although I had enjoyed teaching and interacting with my students, there was a point where I started to feel like I was getting stale. Staying home wasn’t a good fit for me. Even though volunteering kept me busy to an extent, I needed a real job.

TRAINING Two years of college, full time.

WHY I CHOSE THIS JOB Design has been a passion of mine for a long time. I really wanted to be an architect, but that meant very intense schooling and no place for family life. My older kids were starting to get married, and my little ones were still young. Interior design was a less intense course.

THE HARDEST PART The two years of college felt very daunting. I wasn’t a good student when I was a kid, so even the application process made me nervous. I had to research colleges and acceptance requirements, and I had to take an English course before acceptance, because the one I’d done in high school didn’t qualify. It took a lot of self-discipline.

118

I love my job. I’m creating spaces people appreciate and love. And I love dealing with people. Even a full day’s work doesn’t feel overwhelming, because I enjoy it.

3 years

JOB BEFORE: Teacher

JOB AFTER: Interior designer

MAKING IT WORK I work very full time, so I make quick, fresh suppers every night in the Betty Crocker or the grill, and I have a fixed weekly menu so I don’t have to think. I don’t work on Fridays, so that day is dedicated to homemaking. I have a cleaning lady that day, and together, we catch up on all the housekeeping. This help means that I can still bake challah and cook a full Shabbos every week.

WHAT I WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFOREHAND That it’s impossible to please everybody all the time. Although you can please most clients, there will always be difficult people. But my new career has been enormously satisfying for me. It was worth the investment.

I STARTED TO FEEL LIKE I WAS GETTING STALE. STAYING HOME WASN’T A GOOD FIT FOR ME. I NEEDED A REAL JOB

few paces ahead, the road split, and one could go either up or down a major street, Rechov Shaulzon. What would appeal more to a pair of two-year-olds? Up or down? I chose down. Chana went up. Fighting panic, I flew down Rechov Shaulzon, calling their names, my voice becoming increasingly louder as I went. I peeked into the empty, half-built structures, but found no sign of the little girls. There was no phone we could use to call for help, neither public nor private. The closest phone was a 25-minute trek up the mountain to the makolet. I had come to the bottom of the hill. Now what? Once again, the street split: To the left was the Jerusalem forest, and to the right was another street. I went for the street. About two minutes later, I spotted them walking hand in hand, giggling. Safe and unharmed. Hodu l’Hashem ki tov! Sarale didn’t change much as she grew older. She was adventurous and wanted to be like her older siblings, who were going, doing, becoming. She went to faraway England for high school and came back ready to conquer the world. At age nineteen Sarale married, and at twenty she was a mother. She was a natural mother. Sarale cooed and soothed. Her babies thrived. When they grew and didn’t enjoy going to babysitters, Sarale made the brave decision to start a business of her own. Her children were her first concern. I STILL LIVE IN HAR NOF. We have paved roads, landlines, cell phones and stores. Things have changed. These developments, as well as Sarale and her husband’s family portrait, provide evidence of the passing years. I think I need to change my mindset. I can’t possibly be 38. Perhaps I’m already 40.

1 I FIND THIS NEW STAGE… Just as I expected. Some challenges, many perks. Easier than I expected. I’m a free bird!

Even though you still feel like you’re 25 years old somewhere very deep inside, your current status of Bubby (along with possible creases around your eyes) defy that judgment. Now that your nest has emptied and is filling up in a brand-new way, how have things changed?

More challenging than I expected. Some days my house is way too quiet, and other days I’m overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people relying on me.

2 NOW THAT I’M NO LONGER TAKING CARE OF A GAGGLE OF LITTLE KIDS, I’VE TAKEN UP… Exercise! There’s nothing that makes me feel younger and more refreshed than some good old movement. Hitting the streets more often than in the past. I like going out and seeing people. A job. Yup, I’m back in the workforce! Listening to shiurim or participating in classes. Because if not now, when?

MY LIVING SPACE REFLECTS MY NEW STATUS. WHEN I WAS HOUSE-HUNTING IN RECENT YEARS OR MONTHS, I FOUND THAT WHAT TOPPED MY PRIORITY LIST WAS… Peace and quiet. My husband and I no longer appreciate the noise produced by high-energy kids, or the roar of school buses making their rounds. Living near the kids. We wanted a smaller space, but the potential for easy visiting. Living in a flat, or at least having our bedroom on the main level. No stairs for us! A proper guest suite, for when I host my kids, and ample living space. We’ve grown to quiet a crowd, ka”h! Not applicable. We’re still living in our old place (only we have dust bunnies multiplying in some of the bedrooms).

5

I NO LONGER HAVE MUCH HELP AT HOME. I MOSTLY RELY ON… Myself! Baruch Hashem, I’m still fully capable of running my home. Hired help. I keep the house running, and my cleaning lady does the cleaning. My kids and einiklach. They’re such dolls and help out where needed.

6

MY FAVORITE SHABBOS SEUDAH ARRANGEMENT IS… Eating at home, just myself and my husband. It’s so nice and peaceful. Having kids over for a meal. It’s the highlight of my week! Eating at a child’s house. Such nachas!

I REALLY DO TRY TO HELP MY KIDS OUT, WHETHER IT’S WITH FOOD, BABYSITTING, MENDING, OR RUNNING ERRANDS. CHAPTER 4 and wanted to know if I could help her get set up there. I first met Chayala at an exercise class. She was the I stared at the message. Lots of people hire organizers to help them set up a new apartkind of person you’re instantly drawn to — warm and ment. But Chayala specifically wanted me to open, genuinely interested in you. When I told her I was help her for the temporary stay at her motha home organizer, her eyes lit up. er’s house. She would only be living there for a few weeks. Why would she need an organizer? It takes all types, I thought. I scheduled her “I used an organizer a few months ago!” she told me. and took down the address. “She changed my life.” When Chayala’s mother opened the door, the first thing “That’s so nice to hear,” I said. I noticed was the dresser. I noticed it first because it was in “Yeah, but she left the business,” Chayala remarked. “If I the entranceway, right near the door, and I almost bumped ever need someone again, I’ll be sure to call you.” into it when I walked in. The drawers were so full of clothTwo months later, Chayala texted me. She was moving, ing that they didn’t close all the way. Right behind the but her new apartment wasn’t ready and she had to leave dresser was a small bookcase. The shelves were jammed her old one. She’d be staying by her mother for a few weeks with stacks of old newspapers and magazines.

“Come on in,” Mrs. Kahn said. I walked into the living room. At least, I thought it was the living room, because it had a couch in it. The couch was piled with a jumble of toys, books, dishes and clothes, and was hemmed in on all sides with old furniture, large and small household items, piles of clothing, piles of paper, piles of piles. There were things — layers of things — covering every surface in the house, and the floor space was stacked knee-high with piles of stuff. Against the walls, the piles were even higher. Some of them were taller than me. We found Chayala in her childhood bedroom. The walls were lined with broken furniture, old linens, newspapers from forever ago, children’s clothes, books, tapes, CDs, towels, toys and old boots. “We’re using this room and one other bedroom,” Chayala explained. “And I have these three suitcases with the barest essentials, just what we need for a few weeks, but I need to figure out where to put everything.” I didn’t wonder anymore why she hired an organizer. I just wasn’t sure it would be enough. The first step to organizing is discarding items you don’t use. I knew that in this house, it wouldn’t be simple. Mrs. Kahn clearly valued owning all these things. I doubted I could change such a deeply held mindset. Chayala’s suitcases were leaning against a dresser. “Maybe we can use this,” I suggested. With Mrs. Kahn’s permission, I tugged open a drawer. It was full of broken electronics, old door

knobs and hardware. “I wonder if these things are still useful?” I said gently. “Could we remove them so Chayala can use the dresser?” Mrs. Kahn was clearly reluctant. “My Nachy used to play with those,” she said, her face brightening at the memory. “And those doorknobs might come in handy one day.” We went through every item in the dresser. Mrs. Kahn had a comment for each — she could articulate the importance of every item in the house. I could tell that every single thing held a lot of meaning for her. It was painstaking work, but after a while, we managed to empty four dresser drawers. I did a quick calculation: one drawer for Chayala, one for her husband, one for each of the kids. I emptied the suitcases, folded everything as tightly as

READ THE LABEL This label machine is inexpensive and easy to use. It doesn’t require internet connection, is easily portable, and runs on triple-A batteries. Label everything — kitchen cabinets, vanity drawers, even your kids’ school supplies. The job is not complete until it’s labeled!

ORGANIZE ME Q: It’s very nice to organize everything and say, “This is the shelf for the kids’ books” and “This is the cubby for sweaters,” but it only lasts until the next shopping trip, and suddenly there isn’t enough room anymore. How do I organize items that are not of a fixed quantity? A: Quantities don’t usually fluctuate that greatly from week to week; 85% of your house is pretty consistent. (Most items in your kitchen live there for years.) It’s probably only every six months that your quantity of books or clothes changes significantly. When you designate the space to keep those items, leave a little wiggle room for new acquisitions, and every six months, get rid of the old to make space for the new. Throw out old magazines and give away the books your kids grew out of. If you want to keep your house organized, you’ll have to limit your possessions to the amount of space you have.

TAKE IT HOME

possible, stuck in some drawer dividers. By a miracle, I managed to get everything in there; I even labeled the drawers and containers. It was enormously satisfying. I had managed to create a functional oasis for Chayala and her family for their stay here. I nested the suitcases and pushed them under the bed. There was even a little bit of clear floor space. Clear space equals headspace. This was great! Then the baby woke up. The baby! I had forgotten about the baby’s things. And a baby has so many things — bottles and diapers and wipes and onesies and pacifiers and bibs and burp cloths and stretchies and more stretchies and tiny adorable socks and gorgeous little hats. Where would all the baby’s stuff go? I opened my mouth, but then I spotted an over-the-door shoe rack. Bingo! I filled that shoe rack with the baby’s things. Each pocket got something else: diapers, wipes, pacifiers, socks, clothes. It may have been a little unconventional — though I prefer the word creative — but it was perfect. Everything fit, everything was visible, everything was accessible. It looked great, even professional. I labeled every pocket with blue label tape and black block lettering. When we were done, I could see Chayala visibly relax. She gave me a look, and I could tell she was thinking, maybe this is going to be okay after all. When I was done, I walked out that door holding only a single bag for the trash. But it felt like a win. Every item in there meant more breathing space for Chayala and her kids. It wasn’t my typical job, and even though I didn’t come away with any stunning before and after pictures, the deep sense of satisfaction didn’t surprise me. But I was surprised — and gratified — by the voicemail I got a few days later. “This is Mrs. Kahn,” Chayala’s mother said. “I was wondering if I could book some time with you to help me organize my house?”

I often sense resistance from my clients when I start talking about labeling. And I know why: You did all the sorting, discarding, containerizing and organizing. You rearranged where you store your things, created new processes for shopping and cleanup, maybe you even rearranged where each kid sleeps. By the time you get to labeling, you’re tired of this whole organizing thing, and you just want to be done already. Besides, you kind of don’t really want labels on all those nice new containers. I’ll tell you why you need labels. You invested so much time and money in organizing, but the labels are what’s going to maintain it. If you want your closets to look this neat and orderly in six months or in two years (or next week), you need to label everything. Labeling is the only way to ensure that everything will go back into its place. Labeling takes this gorgeous project you just completed and keeps it gorgeous forever. I’ll give you an example. If the coat closet has a bin labeled “Aryeh,” then where will Aryeh’s gloves go? On the floor, of course. But when someone does come along and pick them up, they won’t be sucked into the black hole of the closet forever, and they won’t go into the bin labeled “Baruch,” which would cause Baruch to claim they’re his and Aryeh to miss his bus because he doesn’t have gloves. If the gloves say “Aryeh” and the bin says “Aryeh,” that is the only way Aryeh’s gloves will ever go back into Aryeh’s bin. You can label for free, with a Sharpie marker, or buy inexpensive white envelope labels. I personally love using a label maker. It’s cheap and the label tape is also inexpensive, and it keeps everything nice and uniform. Of course, there are plenty of options for fancy and fun, and you can even buy erasable whiteboard labels if you anticipate having to change labels frequently. Labels are your maintenance crew — welcome them in.

Have an organizing question? Send it to comments@thebpview.com and look for it in this space!

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

hat should high-quality footwear look like? In 1976, Terry Armstrong and Lew Hayden, two friends who founded SAS, had a vision of comfort and quality shoes. And yes, they had humble beginnings and relied heavily on word-of-mouth recommendations. But before long, their sales exploded. Today, with different shoe styles, they still stick to hand-craftsmanship and use only the softest, highest-quality leather.

EVERY JOURNEY STARTS WITH A SINGLE STEP With merely a dozen shoemakers and zero marketing beyond word of mouth, SAS soon became a household name with a trustworthy reputation. The company is now owned by the Armstrong family; Terry Armstrong’s two daughters are still involved. SAS is one of the few companies that still manufacture shoes in the United States, rather than, say, China, Vietnam or Indonesia.

100 STEPS BEFORE YOU TAKE YOUR FIRST A single pair of SAS Shoes may go through a hundred different steps in production. In the factories, fourteen primary operations take place, including leather selection, die-making, cutting, lasting, and more. Within those operations, approximately 80 different pairs of hands carefully construct and inspect each shoe to ensure the SAS quality for which their shoes are famous.

BASED ON THE WEEKLY PARSHAH Rav Moshe Eliezer Rabinowitz zt"l was a beloved rav and mechanech who inspired and guided thousands. His dynamic shmuessen, featuring his trademark wit and vivid stories and parables, were popular among bachurim, yungeleit, as well as ba'alei batim . With his clear, down-to-earth style, he had the unique ability to really "bring a lesson home" with audiences of all types.

Hadrachah - for life -

Lighting the Way: Hadrachah for Life by Rav Moshe Rabinowitz is a compilation of these much sought-after shmuessen, based on the "Ohr Pnei Moshe" weekly. In each page, in each shmuess, readers will be able to "hear" Rabbi Rabinowitz's vibrant voice, and the fundamental lessons he taught, coming through clearly. And the inspiration will last long after each piece has been read.

RECAP: RICHARD HAS FOUND THE CHILDREN PASSAGE ON A SHIP. BUT IT’S A WARSHIP — AND HE’S SIGNED THEM UP AS WARRIORS!

WHAT WERE THOSE STRANGE NOISES WE HEARD LAST NIGHT?

THE SANDS ON THE BEACH RUB AGAINST EACH OTHER IN THE WIND. I CALL IT “ THE SINGING SAND.” IT’S RATHER BEAUTIFUL, ONCE YOU GET USED TO IT.

THERE ARE CREATURES OF THE OCEAN THAT SHINE A GHOSTLY LIGHT. I TRAINED THEM TO FORM A PATH BETWEEN THE ROCKY CLIFFS SO I CAN SAIL INTO THE COVE IN THE DARK.

WHAT ABOUT THE FIRE IN THE WATER? IT FORMED A PATH…

THE SINGING SAND AND GHOSTLY LIGHTS ALSO HELP TO KEEP VISITORS AWAY. BUT IF ANYONE DOES COME TOO CLOSE, I CAN USUALLY SCARE THEM OFF BY SHOUTING FROM THE MOUNTAIN.

THERE ARE TWELVE BEDS HERE, GERBERT. WHOSE ARE THEY? FOR WHOEVER MAKES IT THIS FAR. VISITORS MUSTN’T LEAVE, OF COURSE. NEWS WOULD SPREAD OF MY ISLAND, AND I’D NEVER BE LEFT ALONE! I MAKE MY GUESTS COMFORTABLE HERE. I’M AFRAID WE CAN’T STAY. I NEED TO FIND MY CHILDREN!

UNFORTUNATELY FOR BOTH OF US, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. YOU’RE STAYING RIGHT HERE…

LET US OUT, GERBERT!

NO!

EVERYONE OUT! NOW!

by: Y O N A H K L E I N

illustration: J A C K Y YA R H I

I’M SORRY, SHIMON. I TRIED TO WARN YOU. YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE COME TO MY ISLAND.

THE BLIND WATCHMAN Reb Yose's kindness extended to all, even those who wronged him. His former wife and her wealthy second husband fell on hard times following the latter's loss of sight, when he could no longer be a watchman. Hearing of their dire straits, and despite her abusing Reb Yose during their marriage, the merciful rabbi housed and fed the destitute couple for the rest of their lives. (‫ג‬/‫)בראשית רבה י"ז‬
