There’s nothing like these – fresh, beautiful, homemade challos L’kovid Yom Tov. Wondering why? It’s all in the flour.

Flour is the first ingredient in your challah, and so the flour you choose matters. Wondermills flour is better for you and better for your baking because it’s free of carcinogens and harmful agents commonly found in many flours. It’s also specially formulated to make your challah flu ier and crispier.

Letter filled with warmth

“Challenge” is a word that people aren’t usually so happy to hear, It often comes together with feelings of anger and fear. But these people sometimes miss the point, It’s really a gift!

As we learnt from Moishy In Mrs. Honig’s class. All it takes is perseverance and acceptance to pass. She taught us how to “cope with it instead of fight”. And then we could reach tremendous heights.

May ה ” בקה grant us all אימשד התעייס and חכ you’ll see, And He should help us to be the best person we could be! Don’t forget-smooth seas don’t make skillful sailors!

Machon Lev is an individualized program that gives mainstreamed girls, aged 18 and up, the tools they need to succeed, even if they didn't excel in school. Your daughter will nurture her independence, learn the workforce skills she needs, and be empowered to embrace her new life, gaining confidence and achieving success.

RING, RING

(Re: Court of Public Opinion, Issue 201)

I was surprised by the story of the girl who had a hard time in shidduchim because people thought she was strange or extreme for not having a phone.

In today’s day and age, with all the nisyonos related to technology and materialism, I deeply admire and respect a girl who avoids having a phone. I would take her for a daughter-in-law any day.

SOUND JUDGMENT

(Re: Court of Public Opinion, Issue 201)

There was so much great material to read in your Rosh Hashanah issue, and it was all in the spirit of the Yamim Noraim. Thank you for the inspiration.

I especially loved the article “Court of Public Opinion,” with the stories showing the “other side of the story” that we don’t know when we see things happening around us. It gave me a lot to think about. I was also impressed by the person who accepted her shame as a zechus for her friend, and by the new mother who said that she would also try not to judge the person who wouldn’t give up her seat.

May we all be zoche to receive Hashem's favorable judgment.

IF THE SHOE FITS

(Re: Best Foot Forward, Issue 200)

The start of a new school year, which coincides with the change of seasons as well as the Yamim Noraim, is always a very hectic time for mothers. It seems like the schedule is never the same two days in a row, and there is so much shopping, cooking and preparations to do for the new school year and the Yamim Tovim.

This year I found myself facing an extra challenge. My thirteen-year-old daughter, in eighth grade, could not find school shoes in any of the local stores. This was not because she was picky. Rather, she had grown a lot over the last few months and needed a size 42 or 43 shoe – but the stores in my area did not carry that size. I tried buying her shoes from the mall, but she wanted shoes that were similar in style to what the girls in her class were wearing.

When I read your article about Tescher’s shoe stores, I saw that they mentioned that they make sure to carry very small sizes for preemies, as well as large sizes for kids with big feet. I stopped reading and called them immediately. Leah Friedman told me that she had a pair of shoes that might work, and I dropped everything and went to the store with my daughter. They showed us a pair of moccasin style loafers that ran big, and my daughter tried them on. They were just a drop too small, but Mrs. Friedman removed the inner sole (there is another sole underneath), and they fit perfectly. My daughter was thrilled to be able to wear “regular” shoes. Thank you to Tescher’s and to the entire team at The Boro Park View for being such a fantastic resource for all of us!

A DIFFERENT NUSACH

(Re: Shul Talk, Issue 200)

I’m so excited about your series on shul and what to say/not say/do/not do. I would like to make your readership

aware about the differences in nusach for Kedushah. When davening Nusach Sefard, Kesser is said during Mussaf. However, when davening Nusach Ashkenaz, Nakdishach is said. I realize most of your readership may daven Nusach Sefard, but this is important to note for those who daven Ashkenaz. Thank you very much.

A NEW WALKER

(Re: Morning Strides, Issue 200)

Thank you for the inspirational article about people who walk daily. It really hit home for me and inspired me to get a walking partner and start walking every day. I love the idea of doing it as soon as the kids get on the bus.

I would also love an article on the topic of diets and emotional eating, as this is something I struggle with.

Thanks a lot for your awesome work. Wishing you much continued success!

TIME TO RETURN

Does your machzor have your phone number in it? My guess is no, because most people’s don’t. Unfortunately, hundreds of machzorim are left in shul each year and are never reclaimed. They end up on the shaimos truck. This happens sometimes even to very expensive leather machzorim, presumably given to a chasan or kallah as a gift. There may be a name embossed on the front or engraved on a gold plate, but that is not always enough to find the owner. Please write your name and phone number on the inside cover of the machzor so you can be contacted and your machzor returned.

YOM KIPPUR

The Berditchever rocked the baby back to sleep, while the entire community waited.

EVERY YOM KIPPUR after davening, Reb Yisroel of Ruzhin, zy”a, would tell stories or listen to others share stories about the Kedushas Levi, Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev. He used to say that speaking of the Berditchever is a segulah to sweeten the verdict for Klal Yisroel, since that was exactly what the Berditchever used to do.

The Ruzhiner’s son, the Rebbe of Sadigura, zt”l, said that even just saying the name of the city, Berditchev, was enough to evoke the zechus of the tzaddik. He based his premise on the Gemara (Yoma; 28) which talks about how the kohanim would inform the others that it was time for the korban tamid: They would say that the pnei hamizrach is lit up until Chevron. Rashi explains that the reason they mentioned Chevron was to arouse the zechus Avos, who are buried in Chevron. So too, said the Sadigura Rebbe, mentioning the city of residence of the holy Berditchever also arouses mercy.

On Erev Yom Kippur, Reb Levi Yitzchok would say to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, “You gave us this tenth day for fasting and kapparah, and You gave us the ninth day for eating, drinking, and being joyous. See how Your nation, Klal Yisroel, is together as one in shul. Not a single one is missing, not a single one of them is drunk or sleepy from wine, and not a single one is lying in bed because he overate. They are all standing here barefoot [ready to daven to You]… Is there another nation in the world like them?”

One year, the townspeople of Berditchev gathered in shul, waiting for Kol Nidrei to start. Time was ticking, yet there was no sign of the Rebbe. It turned out that while on his way to shul, the Berditchever had heard the sound of a baby crying in one of the houses. Apparently, the child’s mother had run off for a short time to shul, hoping to join the davening.

IT WAS QUIET IN SHUL as the Berditchever stepped up in front of the aron kodesh. Everyone listened intently as the venerable meilitz yosher began delivering his impassioned Kol Nidrei drasha, a tallis draped over his face. Then came the point they all knew to expect – the Berditchever would inevitably grab hold of the nearest mispallel, and call out, “Ribono Shel Olam! See what kind of Yidden You have?” The Rebbe would continue by delineating the ma’alos of Klal Yisroel with much feeling and fervor.

One year, some misnagdim planned a nasty prank. They brought a non-Jew to shul and stationed him directly near the Berditchever. They were sure the Rebbe would grab hold of him and praise him as an exemplary Yid. They would have the last laugh.

Indeed, the Berditchever clutched the stranger’s arm and drew him near. To their surprise, the Rebbe called out, “Ribbono Shel Olam! Look at the difference between a Yid and a goy!” and he continued to laud Klal Yisroel in reverse manner.

With much sweat and tears, Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev davened extra hard one year. He saw a terrible decree hovering above Klal Yisroel, and nothing seemed to be able to shake it free. Suddenly, during Ne’ilah, the ray of light he’d been waiting for parted the gloom. The decree was abolished.

The Berditchever strongly wished to know who had been the one to erase the gezeirah, and to end this, he fasted and davened for several days. He finally learned that it was a certain soldier in a certain city who had effected the change.

The next year, the Berditchever traveled to that city for Yom Kippur. He asked around until he learned where the minyan of soldiers davened. People tried talking him out of it. “It isn’t appropriate for someone of your stature to daven with those simple troops!” But the Berditchever was resolute, and went to join that minyan. The ba’al tefillah, although several years older and somewhat more knowledgeable than the mispallelim, was a soldier all the same.

The Berditchever was still determined to daven Ne’ilah with the soldiers. He made sure to finish davening a bit early,

On Yom Kippur, many make the effort to speak of the Kedushas Levi, Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, zy”a , who is known as the supreme meilitz yosher of Klal Yisrael. He saw only good in every Yid and always spoke up in Klal Yisroel’s defense – something we wish to have to our advantage on this day of judgment.

and rushed over to the soldier’s minyan for this final, potent tefillah

When he entered the room, the shaliach tzibbur was in the middle of addressing the crowd. “Rabbosai! All of Klal Yisroel, wherever they may be, are davening on this heilige day. Every Yid thinks of himself and his needs. This one davens for parnassah, and that one davens for his wife and children. But we — what should we daven for? We are fed by the army, we don’t have a wife or children.... All we want to daven for is that Hashem’s Name should become great!” With that, Ne’ilah began.

When the Berditchever heard these words, which came straight from the ba’al tefillah’s heart and brought the entire kehillah to tears, he understood. Through their sole endeavor to bring more kevod Shamayim, to daven simply for the purpose of making Hashem’s name great, they had been the emissaries in transforming the gezeirah into blessing.

Once, Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev met a sinner. “I’m jealous of you,” he said. The man was shocked. “Jealous? What could you possibly be jealous of in me?”

The Berditchever replied that Chazal teach us that whoever does teshuvah out of love, his aveiros are turned into zechusim. “If one who has done as many aveiros as you have does a proper, wholehearted teshuvah, he will have more zechusim than I have from all the mitzvos I’ve performed!”

The Berditchever held onto the man’s clothes and talked to him until the man decided he would do teshuvah

Did You Know?

We say in Mussaf, “b’ein meilitz yosher.” This can be translated with a twist: If one considers himself an “ein – a nothing,” with proper humility, that itself will be meilitz yosher for him!

All we want to daven for is that Hashem’s Name should become great!

Shul Talk

An essential guide to tefillah b’tzibbur for women and teens

Part III: Yom Kippur: A kapparah with the crowd

We are about to begin 25 hours of closeness with the Ribono Shel Olam and connection to our own neshamah. On this holy day of Yom Kippur, we stand with the exceptional combination of “gilu b’radah” — rejoicing with trembling. On the one hand, we are filled with fear of the Yom Hadin, knowing that all we have done over the past year will be judged, and our destiny for the upcoming year will be determined. At the same time, we are full of joy that we are zoche to be cleansed of all our aveiros, and have the opportunity to be like malachim on this holy day, when the yetzer hara is stripped of its power.

Davening in shul on this paradoxical day is an added bonus. It affords our tefillos the advantage of being combined with those of the entire community, allowing our wrongs to be overlooked.

Additionally, the Zohar Hakadosh says that on Yom Kippur, when the satan peers inside the shuls

and sees how even the young children are davening without shoes, he begins to tremble, and finds himself speaking positively about Klal Yisroel. The accuser becomes the defender.

Yom Kippur is a gift. Let’s take advantage of the matnas chinam of kapparah and closeness — as a unit.

* * * * *

One year, after davening on Yom Kippur, chassidim noticed Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, zy”a, standing against the wall, measuring himself. When they asked what this was all about, the Rebbe replied that in davening we say, “Anu melei’ei avon, v’atah malei rachamim” — we are full of sin, yet You are full of compassion. “How big are we?” the Rebbe asked. “We are bound by our physical stature. That is how ‘full’ we can be. But the Ribono Shel Olam is infinite! His ‘full’ is limitless! That is how much compassion we are showered with, especially during these heilige teg.”

Tefillos

KOL NIDREI

It is still light outside at the start of Yom Kippur, as the tefillos begin with the timeless words of Kol Nidrei. The aron kodesh is opened and sifrei Torah are taken out — some remove all, and others remove three. Two respectable men stand on either side of the chazzan, forming a beis din.

In an evocative melody, the ba’al tefillah begins, humming the words of Kol Nidrei in an undertone. His voice grows progressively louder as he repeats the tefillah three times.

Observing the intensity of Kol Nidrei, you may be surprised to hear the meaning of its hallowed words. We do not plead for forgiveness or ask for anything. We simply declare that all vows we may make in the upcoming year should be null and void. Besides the technical implications of this, we are boldly implying that we come to Yom Kippur with no unfulfilled promises. Even with the best intentions, we are human, and we thus express our regret over any negative decisions we’ve made.

Kol Nidrei segues into Ma’ariv, which includes Vidui and Selichos.

We say “Baruch Shem” aloud, as we are compared to malachim on this day.

Yizkor

Four times of year, a special memorial tefillah is said by those who lost one or both parents. One of those times is on Yom Kippur.

The word “Yizkor” encapsulates the theme of this tefillah, in which we ask Hashem to remember the neshamos of relatives who have passed on. It strengthens the bond between the niftar and his children, and brings an aliyas neshamah. Also included is a pledge to give tzedakah after Yom Tov, as a zechus for the neshamah

Those who are fortunate to have two living parents leave shul and wait outside during this tefillah, then return for Mussaf.

Al Cheit

Forgiveness is a divine gift. It isn’t logical for sins to be erased completely, without leaving behind even a tiny blemish. But Hashem, in His infinite kindness, grants us the miracle of forgiveness.

Over the course of Yom Kippur, we recite Al Cheit ten times. It includes a list of sins in alphabetical order, with two for each letter of the Alef-Beis, and we beat our heart while saying each one.

Saying the Al Cheit quietly brings us to introspection. We also repeat it aloud, to show that every Yid is responsible not only for himself, but for the entire community as well.

Why do we sing Al Cheit to a niggun? We are speaking of our misdeeds!

There was a prince who began to behave irrationally. His father, the king, sent him to an asylum where he would be treated by a skilled physician. After a while, the prince calmed down and wished to return to the palace. He wrote his father a letter, but the physician intercepted and disposed of it — he didn’t want to lose his well-paying patient! When it happened a second time, the prince realized he needed a plan. He wrote a long, silly letter, which outwardly made him appear deranged, but between the lines, he included his request to be brought home. As he had anticipated, the king understood the clues.

Similarly, the accusers try to stop our tefillos from ascending, yet our song fools them. They think we have no fear of the Yom Hadin, but the King contemplates our song, sees our broken hearts within, and accepts our tefillos.

Mussaf — Avodah

In the Beis Hamikdash, Yom Kippur was the pinnacle of avodas Hashem. The kohen gadol prepared himself well, long before this pivotal day on which he would perform a most detailed avodah Through his actions, Klal Yisrael hoped to obtain forgiveness for our aveiros. Today, when tefillah takes the place of korbanos, we read through a synopsis of this special avodah, in hope that our tefillos will be accepted in Shamayim and we be granted a gut gebentcht yahr

This most heilige day was the once-a-year occasion when the Kohen Gadol entered the most heilige place — the Kodesh Hakodashim — where he brought the Ketores. Over the course of the day, the Kohen Gadol changed from his golden garments to white garments five times, and immersed in the mikvah each time. He washed his hands and feet at the kiyor ten times — once each time he undressed, and once each time he donned a new set of clothes.

Several animals were brought as korbanos, and the Kohen Gadol recited Vidui on each one, addressing Hashem with the Shem Havaya — Hashem’s hallowed name that no one else ever uttered. When the people heard, they kneeled and bowed in deference. When we say in our tefillah that Klal Yisroel bowed, we bow as well — just as they did in the Beis Hamikdash.

The final Vidui was recited over the two goats over which a goral was drawn; one was brought as a korban on the Mizbei’ach, and the other was thrown off a cliff in the desert, a red string tied to its horn. When the goat reached its destination at the bottom of the cliff, the red string turned white, indicating that a kapparah had been granted.

Q: Mussaf of Yom Kippur is so long. At which point does the Avodah start?

Chazaras Hashatz of Mussaf begins with piyutim (depending on minhag of each kehillah), Unesaneh Tokef, and Kedushah. There are several other pieces, like Heyeh im pefiyos, in which the chazzan speaks to the messengers who are about to deliver the tefillos of Klal Yisroel, and Vaye’esayu, which is often sung to a lively tune, describing how Hashem will rule over the entire world, all nations will bow to Him, and all Kings will give over their crowns to the King of Kings.

Then the shaliach tzibbur recites a special tefillah, “Ochilah LaKeil,” asking the kahal for permission to say the Avodah, and begins.

Birchas Kohanim

On Yom Kippur, we are zoche to be blessed by the kohanim. (In Eretz Yisroel, this is a daily privilege.)

Toward the end of Mussaf, the kohanim stand facing the kahal to duchen, while everyone covers their face with a tallis. The kohanim shower us with shefa from Above — all the brachos in the world are included in their short words. The Zohar Hakadosh writes that during Birchas Kohanim, the gates of rachamim are open wide, and anyone who davens can access divine mercy.

Birchas Kohanim is especially valued on Yom Kippur since the brachos are unconditional, even if one has sinned, as the Chida writes. Through their brachos, the kohanim abolish any misfortune that may hover over us.

The Rambam says that to the extent that we prepare ourselves to receive the brachos, that is how great our bounty will be.

Q: I need to leave shul early. Do I need to wait until after Birchas Kohanim?

Since there is an opinion that it is a mitzvah for a Yisroel to accept the bracha just as it is a mitzvah for the kohen to give it, one is not supposed to leave shul until after Birchas Kohanim. Even if you already heard Birchas Kohanim elsewhere, it is improper to leave shul once the kohanim go up to duchen

In some shuls, women and girls are encouraged to leave early to avoid having men and women mingle at the end of davening. Since this is for reasons of tznius, it is permitted according to many poskim

Let’s remember that although it is very special to be in shul on this holiest of days, our primary mitzvah of the day is “ V’inisem es nafshoseichem ” (Vayikra 23:32), which refers to the fast.

Ne’ilah

The sun is setting, the gates of Shamayim are closing. We cling to the final, deepest moments of closeness to Hakadosh Baruch Hu by saying the powerful tefillah of Ne’ilah.

This is an emotion-laden, once-a-year tefillah, established by the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah, to be said at this peak eis ratzon. All of Elul, Rosh Hashanah, Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, Erev Yom Kippur and Yom Kippur are a buildup toward these pivotal moments — the time when our fate is sealed. It is the fifth tefillah of the day, which we don’t have any other day of the year.

We start with Ashrei, followed by Kaddish, said with a special niggun. Several times in the tefillah, we point out “Ki fanah yom” — the day is fading, Yom Kippur is coming to its end.

The ba’al tefillah does not repeat the same words of the quiet Shemoneh Esrei. Instead, Chazaras Hashatz of Ne’ilah contains selichos, in which we say the Thirteen Middos Harachamim seven times.

At the peak of this intimate relationship, after so many hours of intense avodah, self-sacrifice, and fasting, we call out the timeless words cried out by thousands of Yidden who have sacrificed their lives over the generations: Shema Yisroel and Hashem Hu Ha’Elokim!

This is followed by a long shofar blast, signaling the end of Yom Kippur. We exit this special day on a confident note, hopeful that we were indeed assigned a blessed year. We leave shul happy and elevated, like a new person, ready to begin a new chapter.

Q: Do I need to wait to hear the shofar before breaking my fast?

Many people mistakenly think that the shofar ends the day, and thus the fast. In truth, one may break his fast as soon as night has fallen and he has heard havdalah. In some shuls, the davening extends past the zman of nightfall, but one who is at home at that time may make havdalah even if the shul is still davening

Jewish Community Leaders Surprise NYPD Chief With Birthday Cake

There were smiles all around at One Police Plaza last week as Jewish community leaders surprised the NYPD chief with a cake in honor of his birthday. The party took place on September 12.

Caban was appointed to lead the NYPD back in July after the surprise resignation of former police commissioner Keechant Sewell. Community leaders applauded the decision when it was announced, lauding Caban as a strong ally, and noting that he had proven himself to be committed to understanding the needs of New York City’s diverse populations as he rose through the ranks of the NYPD over the years.

Several of the people in attendance at the birthday celebration have worked with Caban in various capacities in the past, and those warm relationships were clearly in evidence during the celebration. The kosher cake presented to the NYPD was decorated with his picture, the NYPD logo, blue roses and the words “Happy birthday to our amazing commissioner Eddie Caban from your friends in the Jewish community.”

“Jewish community leaders were grateful for an opportunity to express their appreciation to the commissioner for his dedicated service, while wishing him a joyous and memorable

birthday,” police chaplain Rabbi Abe Friedman told The Boro Park View

The party took place just before the NYPD held its annual pre-Yomim Noraim security briefing for community leaders and members of law enforcement at the same location. Addressing those in attendance, Caban emphasized the importance of building bridges between law enforcement and local communities.

“Everyone here understands that safe communities require a close partnership between the police and the people we serve and the NYPD has worked hard to strengthen those relationships, but we cannot do that without the people in this room, without the leadership you provide to your communities every single day,” said Caban. “So, thank you for everything that you do during this holiday season and all year long.”

Child Loses Eyesight Due to Toy Laser

Those laser pointers with colorful lights may be fun to play with, but one local boy may have lost his vision in one eye after a friend unknowingly shone an LED beam directly into his face.

The incident took place several months ago, according to reporting by the Monsey Scoop. The boy recalled feeling some discomfort a few days after he and his friend had played with the laser, but it wasn’t until he went for a routine eye checkup that anyone realized that he had no vision in one of his eyes.

The boy was referred to a specialist who confirmed that the concentrated light from the laser pointer had caused the vision loss. He is scheduled for surgery, and

doctors are hoping for a miracle to restore his vision.

Although laser pointers manufactured in the United States do have some safety features, those that come from China are less likely to have those protective measures incorporated into their design and may cause permanent eye damage within a shorter period of time.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, laser pointers can cause instant damage that can lead to a slow loss of vision and should never be given to children.

To Combat Overcrowding, Delta Limits Access to Airport Lounges

The days of being able to enjoy quiet time, a free drink and other perks at a Delta Sky Club may soon be over for many people, with the airline announcing drastic changes to its lounge perks.

ABC News reported that the changes were made in response to constant overcrowding at the popular lounges. As of February 1, 2025, travelers with basic economy tickets will be completely barred from the Sky Club lounges. Those holding American Express Platinum cards will be allowed into the lounge six times during every calendar year, with ten visits accorded to those with a Delta Reserve American Express card. First and business class passengers can also access the Sky Club lounges by paying Delta’s annual $695 membership fee, while those who spend $75,000 each year on their American Express cards will have unlimited access.

Lines are common outside Delta’s Sky Club lounges in JFK Airport, and Delta is in the process of opening a second lounge in Terminal 4 to alleviate the crowds.

The bad news continues for Delta devotees, with the airline making it harder for passengers to qualify for status on its SkyMiles program. Under the program’s new rules, status will be awarded based on money spent with the airline and not by the number of miles flown.

CHAPTER 24

Lani witnesses Chevi bullying Fraidy. Riva asks Shuli to leave her out of the breakfast initiative.

Over a week had passed since Riva had spoken to Lani. It was no longer possible to attribute it to chance.

In the end, it was Riva who broke the silence. And not because she missed her sister.

It was Motzei Shabbos. Lani’s girls had shown up that afternoon — unplanned, to the best of Riva’s knowledge — saying they wanted to continue practicing for the skit. Riva hadn’t been sure how to react. Tell them not to come in? Warn Chevi that she was being watched? Either option felt rude. And also, Riva knew that Chevi had gotten a firm warning from Mrs. Becker earlier that week. Maybe things would be different now?

Fraidy had hung back, clearly not interested in the visit, and only hesitantly sat down on the couch next to her cousins after Riva told the girls, “I’d like to watch your skit,” and plant-

ed herself in a chair facing all of them.

Everything had gone smoothly until Eli woke up from his nap and Riva left the dining room to get him. When she returned moments later, the Eisdorf girls were sitting around in awkward silence, and Fraidy was gone.

Seeing Riva, Malky muttered, “Let’s go home,” to her sisters, and the girls shrank out the door. As predicted, Riva found Fraidy locked into her room, sobbing.

Now, the minute Shabbos was out, Riva picked up the phone and dialed her sister.

“That’s it,” she hissed as soon as Lani answered. “Please tell your girls that the skit is canceled. I don’t want to hear another word about it.”

She rolled up the plastic tablecloth from the dinette table with swift, sharp motions.

“The what?”

Riva’s hand hovered over the garbage can. Over a week may have

passed, but she hadn’t forgotten her sister’s voice. And this wasn’t it.

It was a different voice, one that she recognized quite well. Her mother’s.

“What skit are you talking about, dear?”

Riva stuffed the plastic as deep into the garbage can as it would go. “Uh… nothing. Just, um, a school project, whatever.”

“Oh. Uh, okaaaaay.” Her curiosity buzzed over the line.

Riva let it drop. “What are you doing at Lani’s house?” she asked.

“Tatty and I came over for seuda shlishis. Anyway, I was just telling Lani, I want to do a girls Shabbos next week. We haven’t done one in ages. Isn’t that a fun idea?”

That was the most un-fun idea she could think of, and how was it possible that she hadn’t heard about the seuda shlishis plan, and most importantly, what was she supposed to tell her mother now?

Fraidy was in the dining room, reading a book. Riva lowered her voice. “I don’t know if next Shabbos is going to work.”

“Okay. So how about the next week? Will that work?”

“No.”

“Oh.”

“I’m sorry, Ma, but I can’t see this happening.”

“Uh… why not?”

She couldn’t explain why not, especially considering that her mother was sitting in Lani’s tiny basement apartment with the entire family surrounding her. “I’ll explain later,” Riva said. “Call me when you get home.”

“It’s okay, you can tell me. I left to take out the garbage, nobody’s listening. What’s going on?”

Yaakov and Shaya arrived home from shul. Riva motioned to Yaakov with her hand that she’d be right back and hurried to the porch.

“The truth?” she told her mother. “Because Fraidy and Chevi don’t get along these days. They’re, um, in a bit of a fight, I’d say.”

“Huh?”

“Whatever,” Riva mumbled. “Let’s just wait for this to pass, we can do this Shabbos another time, right?”

“I can’t believe it. That’s ridiculous. Why aren’t you doing anything about it?”

“I am, Ma. Believe me, we’re working on it.”

“And? How long does a fight between nine-year-olds last? I’m sure they’ll make up by Shabbos, or at least by next week. Come on, Riva, why are you making a whole big drama out of this?”

“It’s complicated… They…”

Riva stopped short. What was she doing here? What was the purpose of sharing this with her mother? She should’ve come up with some excuse, there was no reason to tell her the truth.

“We’re going to make havdalah now,” she said abruptly.

“Okay, but we need to do something about this. Let’s talk

later.”

Back in the kitchen, Riva found Yaakov at the kitchen table, bent over a grid paper notepad.

Working? Already?

She replaced the cordless phone on the charger with a firm bang, and as the phone gave its settling beep, it dawned on her; she still hadn’t spoken to Lani.

Her mother didn’t bring up the topic again, and although Riva knew it wasn’t possible, she hoped she’d somehow forgotten about it.

Instead, someone else got on the case, early Sunday morning. It was the principal, Mrs. Becker, just as Riva started on the first sunny-side up.

“I’ve been thinking about Fraidy a lot…” she started.

It was Sunday, all the kids except Shaya were hanging off her like additional limbs, this wasn’t the right time for a sticky conversation. Riva turned off the flame under the frying pan and dashed over to the porch. What would she have done without this hideout?

“So first I want to hear from you,” Mrs. Becker said. “How are things going? Any improvement?”

Improvement, ha. “We actually had another incident on Shabbos,” she reported bitterly. “I’m afraid things aren’t going too well, honestly.”

“I was afraid of that…”

The sounds of traffic rose up from the street. Behind the door, Riva could hear Tzippy yelling. Her nerves twanged.

“So I wanted to ask you,” Mrs. Becker went on, “how do you feel about taking Fraidy for a little counseling? Just, you know, to give her some tools how to deal with all this.”

“Counseling?”

“It’s nothing major, really. Just someone with professional training to guide her a bit. You know, teach her how to stick up for herself in an effective way. Learn some techniques to avoid being targeted. Basically, to help her step out of victim mode altogether.”

“I… hear what you’re saying. But, like, isn’t Chevi the whole problem here? Why shouldn’t she go for counseling?”

“She certainly should, and I’ll be in touch with her mother about it. But we’re talking about Fraidy now.”

Riva got a kick out of the smoothness with which she rolled out the words her mother.

“The reality is,” Mrs. Becker continued, “Fraidy is suffering. She’s the victim here, and she needs help.”

Her words made Riva’s stomach roil. The smell of frying eggs hit her senses, and she felt sick.

It wasn’t fair. She wanted to scream and protest. This was all Chevi’s fault!

But screaming and protesting wouldn’t help anyone. What Mrs. Becker was saying was true, and if she wouldn’t admit it, her own daughter would suffer.

The phone rang again as Riva reheated the oil for the eggs. It was her mother.

“So let me hear,” she began. “What’s this fight all about?”

Sometimes, it made more sense to reach for something that was completely out of reach, because you wouldn’t even feel any disappointment if you didn’t get it.

Maybe that’s why Lani found herself in the The Tilery, not choosing bathroom or kitchen floor tiles, but browsing potential basement floor tiles. Because one day, after the house construction was complete, they were going to redo the basement as well. They were going to turn the place into a tremendous playroom, plus a guest suite and an office for Chaim Tzvi.

A woman wearing a long white skirt and denim top walked up to Lani. “Do you need any help?”

Salesladies. Gotta love ‘em.

“No, thanks. Just looking around.”

“Sure! I’ll be over there if you need me.” She pointed to the far end of the showroom.

And I’ll be right over here, fantasizing.

Her phone vibrated in her bag as she held up a taupe parquetlook tile. She fished in her bag and said a distracted hello.

“Hi, this is Devorah Nieder, Shuli’s mother. I ordered a breakfast from you recently.”

The name Nieder rang a bell. Lani carefully placed the tile down and adjusted her bag on her shoulder.

“I’m not sure if you spoke to Shuli. Did she tell you about the idea?”

“Which idea?”

“I guess she didn’t,” Mrs. Nieder said. “Okay, let me start from the beginning. Uh, am I catching you at a good time?”

Lani’s eyes swept over the cavernous showroom. “Yes, yes. Go ahead.”

“So I run this organization, it’s called Mother Hen, and we help kimpeturins. We offer several services, like sending volunteer mothers’ helpers, babysitters, or even sponsored cleaning help. But the main thing we help with is meals. We have a whole system for arranging meal chains, it really works nicely. And now Shuli told me about you, that maybe if we get you on board, we could take this to the next level and send over one gorgeous breakfast to every new mother when she returns home from the hospital. I would take care of the funding, obviously.” She paused. “What do you think?”

“Uh…” She had no idea what to think. What to make of the little flutter of excitement in her stomach. “It sounds interesting,” she said, hoping she sounded just that — interested — and not overeager. “I’d need to hear more details, obviously. What kind of packages you have in mind. How many orders…”

“The kind of packages, I’d like to hear from you. From what Shuli tells me, your standard package is really nice, so that would probably be fine? And the number of orders, not too much. Let’s say around five or six a day?”

Between five or six orders a day! Lani’s eyes ran over the rows of tiles on display. This Mother Hen organization was a bigger operation than this woman let on.

She stopped caring about overeagerness. “That sounds amazing,” she said honestly. “I think we can make this work.”

Mrs. Nieder sounded equally eager. She told Lani she needed a few days to sit down with her accountant and come up with a fundraising strategy. She’d be in touch.

I can recommend a fundraiser, Lani thought wryly and she slipped her phone back into her bag and stepped out of The Tilery.

It was probably premature to celebrate. For all she knew, Mrs. Nieder’s accountant would tell her this was out of their budget and the entire venture would be over before it started.

But if it did work out… wow. It would be just wow. Her business would become real. She would be generating a real income.

Her mind took off rapidly, whizzing through the technicalities. She didn’t know if it would actually happen, but if it did— and who knows, maybe it really would!—she would need a kitchen to work out of. Five or six breakfasts a day on a steady basis; that wasn’t happening in her basement apartment, no way.

She pulled her phone out of her bag again and dialed her mother.

“Hi, Lan, I just tried reaching you at home. Where are you?”

“I just went to, um, take care of something. Uh, Ma, I need to ask you for a favor. I mean, it’s hypothetical at this point, but if does happen…” She was tripping over her words. She took a steadying breath and asked, “Would I be able to work out of your kitchen for the next little while? Until our house is ready, I mean.”

Her mother had a hundred questions, and Lani told her whatever she knew. “We didn’t finalize anything yet,” she made sure to remind her.

“Okay. Yes, you can use my kitchen. But tell me something else. What’s up with Chevi? Why is she starting up with Fraidy?”

TO BE CONTINUED…

COCOA SQUARE BRISKET

Get the most out of this squarecut meat. Each serving is individually wrapped and bakes in its own little blanket, keeping it soft and moist. I love serving these because it doesn’t have to be sliced, and most importantly, it’s portion-controlled!

INGREDIENTS

6 3-inch squares of second cut brisket

½ cup cocoa

2 T. kosher salt

½ tsp. ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine salt and pepper. Rub onto meat.

2. Place the meat in a bag. Add cocoa and shake until all pieces are well coated.

3. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet.

4. Sear the meat on all sides.

5. Wrap each individual piece in parchment paper and then in silver foil.

6. Place all wrapped pieces in a 9x13 pan.

7. Bake at 350° for 3 hours.

GARLIC CRUSTED RACK OF RIBS

The key to making this dish special is searing the meat before baking it. The crust it creates helps lock in the juices, making each bite truly delicious.

INGREDIENTS

3 lb. rack of ribs or baby back ribs

4 - 5 garlic heads (40-45 cloves)

3 T. parsley flakes

2 T. oil

2 T. kosher salt

½ tsp. ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS

1. Place the garlic in a food processor fitted with the s-blade. Blend until completely crushed.

2. Place the crushed garlic in a bowl. Add the parsley and oil. Mix until combined. Set aside.

3. In a separate bowl, combine salt and pepper. Rub this mixture onto the meat.

4. Coat the entire meat in the crushed garlic mixture. Create a smooth and even coating.

5. Preheat oven to 250°. Prepare a cooling rack that is oven safe over a cookie sheet. Set aside.

6. Heat a large skillet. Once the skillet is hot, sear the meat on all sides, creating a roasted crust. Make sure all areas get seared.

7. Place the meat on the cooling rack. Bake for approximately 4½-5 hours.

PISTACHIO LAMB RACK 141 www.thebpview.com 718.408.8770 September 20, 2023 The Boro Park View

PISTACHIO LAMB RACK

Just about a year ago, I was invited to my Uncle Mendy for a Yom Tov meal. There I was introduced to my now-favorite pistachio lamb rack! This meat is the most delicious, flavorful meat I have yet tasted. Here I bring this recipe to you, along with all the tricks I was taught.

INGREDIENTS

2 racks of lamb, 8 bones each

1 T. oil

½ cup honey

¼ cup Dijon mustard

1½ cup pistachios

2 sprigs rosemary

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp pepper

BAKE FRESH

Lamb racks are best fresh. To serve fresh lamb on Yom Tov, prepare the crushed pistachios in advance. Create the honey mustard mixture in advance and refrigerate. Sear the meat on Erev Yom Tov. Keep the foil on and refrigerate. Keep your oven on at 225° over Yom Tov. An hour and a half before the meal, cover the meat in the honey mustard mixture and coat in the pistachios. Lock the bones and cover in foil. Place in the oven 1 hour and 15 minutes before serving.

Tip: Remember to cut foil before Yom Tov.

TO PREPARE THE CRUMBS

1. Using a blender or food processor, crush the pistachios until fine crumbs form. Add the salt and pepper and set aside.

TO PREPARE THE LAMB

1. Cover the bones with silver foil to prevent them from becoming dried out.

2. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil and sear the lamb 4 to 5 minutes per side. It’s important to get a full sear on the entire meat, so try to maneuver the meat in all directions. Keep the foil on and allow the meat to cool.

3. Preheat the oven to 225°.

4. In a bowl, combine the honey and mustard. Mix until well combined.

5. Cover the meat completely in the honey mustard mixture.

6. Coat the meat in pistachio crumbs. Use your dry hands to press the pistachio crumbs into the meat.

TO BAKE

1. Now that your meat is fully coated, remove the foil from the bones and interlock the bones of the racks (as shown in the final picture).

2. Once the bones are interlocked, place a new piece of foil over the bones.

3. Bake the meat on 225°F for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

4. Allow the meat to set for 5 minutes before cutting.

APPLE CRANBERRY CORNISH HENS

Cornish hens are perfect to serve over Yom Tov, for some variety. They are a specialty in their own right, which many reserve as a signature Yom Tov treat. Cornish hen tastes better than chicken because their smaller size makes them tender and more juicy. They also have a sweeter, richer flavor. I’m excited about this recipe, as you can get the rich flavor and tender texture of meat without breaking the bank.

Yield: 8 servings

INGREDIENTS

4 Cornish hens, 1–1 ½ lb. each

1 loaf of bread (1 lb.) or leftover challah

1 Gala apple, unpeeled and cubed

1 cup dried cranberries

1 cup frozen cranberries

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

3 stalks celery, diced

1 large white onion, diced

1 egg

2 T. oil

2 cups chicken stock

4 cloves crushed garlic

Salt and pepper to taste

2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

3. Cut the bread or challah into small pieces and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes until dry and crispy.

4. Add the bread to a large bowl together with the apples, both cranberries, dried and frozen celery and onion. Mix well.

5. In a small bowl add the egg, oil, chicken stock, crushed garlic, salt and pepper. Mix, and pour it over the bread mixture. Mix very well.

6. Line a roasting pan with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 400°.

7. Clean the chickens well and rub salt and pepper into the inside cavities of the chicken.

8. Stuff each chicken with half a cup of the bread mixture and tie the legs of the chickens with kitchen twine so the stuffing doesn’t fall out.

9. Brush the top of the chickens with oil and additional salt and pepper.

10. Put the extra stuffing in a 9x13 pan.

11. Place the Cornish hens and the stuffing in the oven. Remove the stuffing after 35 minutes, when the top is crispy.

12. Take the chicken out after 1 hour and 10 minutes, when the top is roasted.

13. Serve the chicken with additional stuffing on the side. Note: You can prepare this in advance it freezes well.

RABBI YAAKOV YOSEF REINMAN

It seems he had made a separation in his mind. According to his way of thinking, there are sins against Hashem, bein adam laMakom, and there are sins against other people, bein adam l’chaveiro. We have to settle our accounts with Hashem, Whom we’ve disobeyed, and we have to settle our accounts with people, whom we’ve hurt either physically, emotionally or financially.

As long as we are good with Hashem, he was (wrongly) thinking, we are in a good place. Although we know that Yom Kippur does not atone for sins against other people unless they forgive us (Yoma 85b), it doesn’t matter so much if our accounts with other people remain open a little while longer.

But that cannot be correct. If Yom Kippur does not cleanse us of sins that are bein adam l’chaveiro, how do we explain the great many sins bein adam l’chaveiro for which we beg forgiveness in our Yom Kippur prayers? We betrayed; we stole; we exploited; we spoke falsehoods; we gave bad advice; we cheated; we insulted our parents; we slandered; we defamed; we hated for no reason; and many more.

Why are we confessing these sins and asking forgiveness? If we have already

apologized to the people we wronged and our apologies were accepted, then we no longer need forgiveness. On the other hand, if we have not been forgiven by the people we hurt, then Yom Kippur does not absolve us of our sins.

The standard answer given is that sins bein adam l’chaveiro also have a bein adam laMakom component. After you gain forgiveness from the injured person, you must also ask forgiveness from Hashem for what you have done.

ONLY ONE KIND OF SIN

I would suggest that there are no two components. There is only bein adam laMakom. Sins are forbidden because Hashem forbade them, and therefore, you cannot sin against another person. A person is not a “god” against whom you can sin. You can only sin against Hashem. The Torah forbids causing pain to an animal, tzaar baalei chaim. Would you consider that a sin “bein adam labeheimah”? Of course not. Causing pain to animals is a sin against Hashem. Hurting other people is similarly a sin against Hashem.

Someone once said to me before Yom Kippur, “I think we’re all doing pretty well. Most of us aren’t guilty of all the sins mentioned in the machzor , except for bein adam l’chaveiro, those between us and other people.”

ןכערפשפא

Everything in this world belongs to Hashem. LaShem haaretz umelo’ah. The environment is His. The animals are His. The people are His. “Do not destroy My world,” says Hashem. “Do not cut down My fruit trees. Do not cause pain to My animals. Do not harm My people.” Hurting other people is a sin against Hashem. Sins bein adam l’chaveiro are just another form of sins bein adam laMakom. Other people are not your baalei davar, your litigants, when it comes to sins. You have no account with them. You have an account only with Hashem. The people you harmed are your victims, nothing more.

Why, then, do you have to ask for their forgiveness? Because you cannot ask Hashem to forgive you for harming His people before you do everything in your power to repair the damage you have done. You cannot ask Him to forgive you for stealing if you still have the stolen property in your possession. You cannot ask Him to forgive you for insulting another person before you have appeased and mollified him.

The Mishnah does not say that Yom Kippur does not atone for these sins until you gain forgiveness. It says “ad sheyeratzeh es chaveiro,” until you appease him; you have to repair the damage. Rav Hutner, zt”l, used to say that it is not enough to ask for forgiveness. You have to say, “Ich vill zain b’yedidus mit dir — I want to be your friend.”

Furthermore, you cannot say that the person you insulted is too sensitive, that he had no business being insulted. He is who he is, and you have no permission to harm him. If Hashem has a very delicate vase, does that give you the right to break it? You have to be especially careful with a delicate vase, because if you break it, how will you ever put it back together again?

A Russian Jew told me that a certain unspecified rosh yeshivah once made a very hurtful remark to him about Russian Jews. The next day, the rosh yeshivah called and asked for forgiveness.

“Did you forgive him?” I asked.

“Of course,” he said. “If a rosh yeshivah asks for forgiveness, how can I not forgive him?”

“But did you forgive him in your heart?”

“Of course not. It did not alleviate my pain.”

So did the rosh yeshivah take care of his bein adam l’chaveiro sin? I would say that he did not.

Let’s say you owe someone a thousand dollars and you ask him to forgive your debt. He feels uncomfortable turning you down, so he forgives the debt. Is the debt forgiven even though in his heart he did not want to do it? It is indeed forgiven. We say that “devarim shebalev einam devarim” — your inner thoughts that contradict what you say explicitly are irrelevant. In the world of business, your lender is indeed your baal davar; if he states that he forgives the debt, it is forgiven.

In the world of bein adam l’chaveiro sins, however, your victim is not your baal davar. We do not say that “devarim shebalev einam devarim,” because it is all about the devarim shebalev. Hashem is your Baal davar, and if you do not repair the devarim shebalev, you cannot ask Him for His forgiveness.

If you ask a person’s forgiveness three times in three separate places, and he still refuses to forgive you, Hashem forgives you. For instance, you meet the person in shul and say, “Please forgive me.” He refuses. The next day you meet him

in the supermarket and say, “Please forgive me.” He refuses. The next day you meet him in the bank and say, “Please forgive me.” He still refuses. Are you forgiven?

The question is, did you do everything in your power to appease him? Did you make every effort to restore his honor? Did you show him that you’ve turned a new leaf and want to be a true friend to him? Did you send him flowers and chocolates? Did you help him get his child into school?

Now, did you show true remorse for hurting one of Hashem’s creatures? If you did, and your victim still refuses to forgive you, then Hashem says, “I see you’ve done your best to repair the damage to My world, and I see that you are remorseful. I forgive you for sinning against Me.”

Rashi says in Parshas Re’eh (13:9) that when a person pleads with you to forgive him, you have a mitzvah of azov taazov imo, to ease the heavy burden of guilt under which he is staggering. We see that you cannot just ask for forgiveness. Asking for forgiveness is not transactional. You have to plead for it. You have to show true remorse.

And if your victim dies before he forgives you, you must bring ten men to the cemetery and ask forgiveness from his silent gravestone.

TEN MEN IN A CEMETERY

If you’ve done nothing to appease your victim during his lifetime, he will have gone to the grave with the damage completely unmitigated. In that case, ten men in a cemetery will help only if you are heartbroken and remorseful that there is nothing left to do, if you are mortified with shame before Hashem that you caused great damage to His world and there is no way to repair it.

The truth is that as much as you try to repair the damage, especially if the hurt was deep, you cannot undo what you have done. The wound you made can never be completely healed, and even if it is healed, a scar will always remain. You have to do the best you possibly can, and then, even if the damage you

caused is not completely undone, Hashem will forgive you.

We are all destroyers. Every time we do something, every time we open our mouths, there is potential for damage to other people, especially to those people close to us. The risk of sinning bein adam l’chaveiro between parents and children is exceedingly great. The Torah puts parents on a pedestal, as does the entire world, and when a child is disrespectful to a parent, it cuts to the quick. Conversely, when a parent says a harsh word to a child, especially in his formative years, it can cause damage that lasts a lifetime.

The greatest risk of bein adam l’chaveiro, I believe, is between spouses. Husbands and wives are in constant contact, with innumerable opportunities for friction and recriminations. They are exceedingly vulnerable to each other, and even a small hurtful word can destabilize a spouse’s world. Before Yom Kippur, the husband puts on his kittel before going to shul, and he turns to his wife and says, “Are you moichel me?” And she says, “Of course. Are you moichel me?” And he says, “Of course.” They both mean it on some level, but it is woefully inadequate. Asking for forgiveness is effective only if it is the culmination of a long and serious process of conciliation. Otherwise, the wounds are not healed.

The focus on bein adam l’chaveiro should not just be during the approach to Yom Kippur. There must be a constant awareness of the risks, an awareness that hopefully will lead to prevention rather than repair. But if there is some damage, as is almost inevitable in all meaningful relationships, the repair must be immediate. Wounds allowed to fester are much harder to heal.

I know, I know, I know — my job on Yom Kippur is not to go to shul. It’s not even to daven. My job is to take care of my children.

I know

I know all the meshalim. They are the King’s children; this is the service He wants from me. He doesn’t want me to leave them with a babysitter, He doesn’t want me to ignore them; He doesn’t want me to daven.

I know all the chizuk speeches about the power of a mother’s prayers, about the weight her few snatched words hold.

I know it all, and I believe it, and it comforts me.

Usually.

But sometimes I just want to daven

Or at least be in the Yom Kippur mindset.

Or at least, not snap at my kids. Those same kids that make my mothering so holy that I don’t even have to daven on Yom Kippur.

Because last year, I did feel like I was going to snap. All day long (and it was a very long day), I had been trying to work things out so that I would be able to

daven Ne’ilah. Shacharis was a lost cause — the baby woke up when it was still too early to daven. The rest of the crew kept me busy until Mincha… and well past it. While I did manage Birchos Hashachar and snuck in some Tehillim, the day was a blur of feedings and childcare.

I just wanted to daven Ne’ilah. Was that too much to ask? Not in shul, of course, that would be optimistic to the point of ridiculous. I just wanted to be able to daven Ne’ilah at home. So I fed the baby and the little kids with an eye on the clock, entertained them for longer than I thought possible, then rushed them into bed. A Yom Kippur miracle — they fell asleep! The older set should be okay, I figured. My six-year-old could keep himself busy, the eight-year-old too, and the ten-year-old was in shul with my husband. Yes! I was going to make it. I was going to daven Ne’ilah!

I was already holding my machzor when I heard the front door bang open. It was the ten-year-old, back from shul for some reason. I didn’t hear what he called out, only the argument that followed. It had been a long day for him

too, and the six-year-old was apparently playing with his Lego. The storm clouds were gathering and I flew down the stairs, still with machzor in hand, to try to defuse the situation before it came to blows.

My kids were fighting on Yom Kippur. At Ne’ilah.

I felt like a failure.

I tried to mediate, but my eye was on the sinking sun outside. The moment for Ne’ilah was passing. I knew I wasn’t going to make it.

I was going to snap. At all of them.

But then, from somewhere deep inside me — very deep inside — I pulled out a thought. It’s not your job to daven Ne’ilah. It’s your job to be a mother. The gates are closing. Now’s your chance, at this last moment, to show Hashem what kind of mother you can be.

I muttered a short tefillah: Please Hashem, as the gates close, please forgive us and cleanse us and bless us with a year of revealed good, for health and life and Torah, another year of these kids doing these things.

Then I started cleaning up the Lego, as the gates swung closed.

SONG AT THE GATES

Past the frosted windows of the shul, the sky was turning golden. Those defining moments of the heart-thundering hayom yifneh, hashemesh yavo v’yifneh, were upon us. The day was drawing to a close, the sun about to set on the holiest day of the year.

Weakened from the fast, we stood on our feet, in the shul that was getting ever more crowded, for the last auspicious tefillah. For another few whispered prayers before the gates clanged shut behind the dipping sun.

But all was silent in the shul of the previous Viznitzer Rebbe, the Toras Mordechai, zt”l. I strained my ears and looked around, craned my neck to get a glimpse past the mechitzah and into the mass of swaying white. Perhaps I’d missed the Neilah announcement, a lone voice drowned out by the hundreds of mispallelim between the baal tefillah and the balcony in which I stood?

But no, around me everyone stood waiting. Some with eyes closed in concentration. Others lost in thought, focused on a point in the distance. Word-

lessly and soundlessly, we all crammed in fervent pleas for repentance, absorbed those last few moments of this day of closeness, and silently begged to have gezeiros tovos written before the final stamp.

The elderly Rebbe had stepped out, and the congregation, their pleas all ascending on high upon the power of his, waited expectantly for the davening to commence.

The silence was thick, punctuated by an occasional sniffle, then some scraping of chairs as those lucky enough to have a seat sat down. It was after a long fast, a heavy day of davening, and it had taken a toll on me, on many of us.

And then, like a low rumble of thunder, the humming began.

Fatigued heads lifted in wonder as the words rose up to the women’s balcony.

Avinu Malkeinu.... Avinu Malkeinu…

The song, the tefillah, gathered momentum, taking the entire sea of mispallelim with it, and soon the shul was alive with pulsing supplication. Faces buried in our machzorim, the women swayed to

the singing of hundreds of voices rising to the very heavens. The heaviness that had been gathering in my chest all day long finally spilled over. The tears streamed down my face and into my machzor

Kabel b’rachamim u’veratzon es tefillaseinu…

As soon as the song was over, it started again. No conductor could have led a choir quite so heartfelt, quite so soulstirring, as hundreds of Yidden, who had devoted the entirety of the past 24 hours solely to Hashem and repentance, turned to Heaven and in unison asked our Father, our King, to embrace our tefillos

And then we were ready.

The Rebbe returned. Neilah began. The urgency of those last few minutes once again took over the shul as the benches banged open to allow the mispallelim to get to their feet.

Novo’ah she’arecha…

We were at the gates.

And after the most uplifting tefillah I had ever experienced, I felt ready.

HANGING BY A THREAD

“Shani, get up!” my sister said urgently. “It’s time to go to shul for Ne’ilah!”

I sat up in bed and tried to overcome the dizziness I was feeling.

“It’s our last chance,” Rivky added, more quietly this time, with a catch in her voice. “Come, let’s go.”

I pulled myself together and walked to shul, ignoring my extreme weakness. This was no time to think about myself.

“After the zman, Mommy’s going to call Liba right away,” Rivky said softly. “I wonder what she’ll say.”

My throat became suddenly full at those words. Liba was our older sister, who’d spent her Yom Kippur in the hospital at her daughter’s bedside. Her little girl, Chaya Mindy, was on life support and barely hanging on.

A tear snuck out of my eye as I thought about my niece. I’d cried so much already, I was surprised there were still so many tears in me.

I swallowed.

“What do you think she’ll say?” I spoke around the lump in my throat, nearly whispering.

Rivky looked off into the distance, where we could see the block of our shul.

“I don’t know,” she said at last.

We hadn’t heard from Liba in over 24 hours, since Yom Kippur had started. With Chaya Mindy in such critical condition, there was no way to guess what had happened during that time.

“Maybe she’ll say that

Chaya Mindy’s kidneys started working,” I said quietly, remembering the fervent wish Liba had expressed the day before.

“Maybe,” Rivky said, and she quickened her pace slightly as we approached the shul. “I wish.”

My heart twisted. Chaya Mindy’s body was shutting down, and she was in near-complete organ failure. If her kidneys started working again, even just a little bit, that would be such in-

credible news to hear on Motzei Yom Kippur.

We needed to beg for the miracle to occur, for her organs to start working again.

“Daven now,” Rivky said, pulling open the door. “There are only two hours left…”

* * *

When you’re surrounded by the immediacy of a life-and-death situation, the Yamim Noraim take on extra meaning. Tragically, the next year, Chaya Mindy was no longer with us. But remembering the intensity of our desperation the year before accompanied me as Rosh Hashanah approached again.

And that year on Yom Kippur, as I stood in shul and the chazan intoned, “P’sach lanu shaar, b’eis ne’ilas shaar,” I felt a shudder go through every part of me.

I remembered the conversation with my sister Rivky the year before, and it suddenly struck me that those heartfelt tefillos were just as necessary now as they were last year.

Was I any less in need of Hashem’s rachamim for my own kidneys to function this year than Chaya Mindy had been last year?

This was my last chance. There were only two hours left to plead for the miracle to occur, for my organs to be in perfect working order this year.

Daven now. I heard Rivky’s voice in my mind. Now was the pivotal moment.

BIRCHAS KOHANIM:

A HANDFUL OF BRACHA

Raise Your Hands

Birchas Kohanim was first recited by the first Kohen, Aharon, more than 3,300 years ago at the Chanukas HaMishkan, when he lifted his hands and uttered the eternal words, “Yevarechecha Hashem v’yishmerecha… v’yasem lecha shalom.”

The letters of Aharon Hakohen’s name can be reshuffled to create the word “nirah,” meaning “to be seen.” This embodies the power of Birchas Kohanim: The positive results are visible for all to see.

When and Where

Birchas Kohanim must be transmitted joyously. In chutz la’aretz, we receive the brachos at times of simchah — on Yom Tov, including Yom Kippur, when our hearts overflow with joy at the opportunity for a complete kapparah

Sefardim throughout the world, along with Ashkenazim throughout Eretz Yisroel, are fortunate to receive these blessings daily.

In the times of the Beis Hamikdash, the avodah of the Kohanim included Birchas Kohanim. After the morning korbanos, the Kohanim would ascend a duchan, or a platform, hence the Yiddish term duchening

As the heart of the world, Eretz Yisroel serves as the conduit for all bracha. The blessings shared by the Kohanim every day flow throughout the entire world, showering bracha on Yidden, wherever they may be.

172 www.thebpview.com 718.408.8770 The Boro Park View September 20, 2023

DAILY DEDICATION

As one of the 613 mitzvos, it would seem that Birchas Kohanim should be done every day, everywhere. Alas, it seems that aside from the technical reasons that affect Ashkenazim in chutz la’aretz, there seem to be other mysterious obstacles, too. The Vilna Gaon had a great desire for the Kohanim to confer their brachos daily in his hometown. One day it was announced that the following morning, the Kohanim would duchen. That very afternoon, though, the Gaon was arrested by government authorities. It seems that in Shamayim, he was prevented from enacting his holy desire. Later, his talmid Rav Chaim of Volozhin also wished to institute Birchas Kohanim daily and issued instructions for the bracha to be recited the next day. However, a fire broke out in the middle of that night, burning down the shul — preventing a daily Birchas Kohanim once again.

With Love

The Kohanim begin with a bracha, affirming that they were conferred with the kedusha of Aharon and were commanded to bentsch Klal Yisroel b’ahavah. It is the love of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and the love of the Kohanim that are highlighted during these holy moments.

Much like the keruvim facing each other atop the Aron in the Kodesh Hakodashim, the Kohanim stand face to face with the rest of Klal Yisroel in a complete demonstration of ahavah.

Ahavah is actually a prerequisite for the bracha. If a tzibbur is not satisfied with the Kohen, or if the Kohen is not at peace with the tzibbur, the Kohen is not allowed to duchen

In Honor of the Shechinah

Because

THE KEY TO BRACHA

With a Shining Face

Rav Avigdor Miller commented that if a person shows his cheerful countenance to others, Hashem will surely show a “cheery face” to us as well: “ya’er Hashem Panav eilecha.”

Chassidim approached the Baal Hatanya and complained about their insufficient parnassah. The Rebbe told them that the keys to bounty lie within ahavah and achvah. He counseled them to refrain from jealousy or badmouthing other Yidden. “The proof,” the Rebbe said, “is from the Kohanim. They were commanded to bentsch Bnei Yisroel b’ahavah. Once they wish love among Bnei Yisroel, the subsequent yevarechecha Hashem — the bracha for physical sustenance — will inevitably follow.”

the Shechinah is present when the brachos are given, it’s customary for everyone in shul to stand, and to cover their faces rather than observe the Kohanim.

Foundations of the Bracha

Birchas Kohanim is divided into three parts. It begins with brachos for material abundance and protection, continues with chein and the ability to give meaning to His creation, and concludes with a complete close connection between Hakadosh Baruch Hu and ourselves.

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

A Holocaust survivor who served as a baal tefillah in a large kehillah during the Yamim Nora’im emotionally shared his memories of the post-war days.

“Some sixty years ago,” he said, “it came time for duchening, but there was no Kohen around. We went outside onto the streets to search… Maybe we’d be able to find a Kohen and beg him to come inside to duchen for us! Today,” he continued, “I stand at the amud and call out, ‘Kohanim!’ and so many Kohanim, young and old, run up. There can be more Kohanim than comfortably fit before the aron kodesh.”

Still, we yearn to merit receiving the brachos from myriads of Kohanim in the Beis Hamikdash, every single day.

The first verse has three words, correlating to the three Avos. The second has five, corresponding to the five Chumashim. The third has seven words, indicating a relationship with the seven heavens from where Hashem showers His brachos upon us.

Last Words

In the first verse, we are blessed with sustenance and health. Once attained, it can easily be taken for granted or abused. Thus, we end with “veyishmerecha” — may Hashem protect us and help us treat these gifts with care.

One understanding of the second bracha is that our minds be illuminated by the Torah. It ends with the word “viyechunecha” — may Hashem help us find favor in His eyes and the eyes of others. Without this, our Torah learning is limited; possessing wisdom but being unable to share it with others makes our learning incomplete.

The third bracha asks for compassion and mechilah, and ends with the word “shalom.” Without peace, all else has little value.

The Kohanim conclude with the words, “v’yasem lecha shalom.” It is puzzling that the bracha of peace specifically, which usually refers to interpersonal relationships, is wished upon the individual – “lecha.” It would seem more logical to wish peace onto Klal Yisroel as a whole. Yet this wording imparts a profound message. It symbolizes the constant tug-ofwar between the guf and the neshamah. In nearly all areas of life, these two desire polar opposites. Through this bracha of shalom, or shleimus, we acquire an inner sense of harmony and completeness. The personal peace we gain through these words is the essential way for the body to find and enjoy ruchnius delight.

TINY SCROLLS

In 1979, excavations at the site of the ancient caves in Ketef Hinnom, on the outskirts of Yerushalayim, turned up an amazing discovery. Among some thousand artifacts uncovered were two tiny silver scrolls, each no taller than an inch. They were so fragile that it took three years to figure out a way to safely unroll them without causing them to disintegrate. Finally, the words were deciphered: the timeless words of Birchas Kohanim. These kamei’os were traced to the period of Yirmiyahu Hanavi, toward the end of Bayis Rishon.

One and All

The Gemara (Sotah 38b) implies that even a Yid who cannot be present in shul is gebentched with the words of Birchas Kohanim. In fact, all of Klal Yisroel benefit from the holy words. This certainly includes those hospitalized, and women at home with their children.

Shalom and Shleimus

Between Shabbos candles, havdalah candles, yahrtzeit candles and Chanukah candles, your house is probably pretty wellstocked. And if you’re the type who likes to light candles in centerpieces or for their scent, then you’ll have even more. But candles have played many roles in history.

CLINK GOES THE CANDLE CLOCK

Years ago, once the sun went down, it was dark. And cold. And you couldn’t use the sun to track passing time.

Enter the candle.

Candles provided light, a bit of warmth, and even a way to tell time. Over 2,000 years ago, people marked lines on candles, based on how long it would take for that part of the candle to burn down. They marked lines in intervals of, for example, ten or twenty minutes, all the way down the length of the candle. That way, they could look at the candle and know how much time had passed.

But it gets even better. What if you wanted to use your candle clock as an alarm clock? Easy enough. All you had to do was stick a nail into the candle at the point where the candle would reach when you wanted to wake up. As the candle burned down the wax to that point, the nail fell out and created a loud clang as it hit the metal candle holder. Voilà, an alarm clock!

THEN AND NOW: SCENTED CANDLES

Today, scented candles are one of the most popular types of candles. Surveys show that the majority of people who buy candles light them at home for their scent.

In the early days of candles, though, candle wax was made out of animal fat, called tallow. If you’ve ever used schmaltz on Pesach, you can imagine what kind of scent the tallow had. Beeswax made a much better smelling candle, but was too expensive for most people.

186 The Boro Park View

DON’T FALL DOWN: ZERO GRAVITY CANDLE

In outer space, a candle’s flame doesn’t leap upward. Instead, the flame burns around the wick in a sphere, and the color of the flame is blue. The reason for this is the lack of gravity. In the flames we see on Earth, gravity pulls down the colder air around the flame, which makes it look like the flame itself is rising upward.

THE ART OF THE CANDLE

Making candles can be an art form, too. The candle art gallery in Tzefas is a famous tourist attraction, where you can see intricate candle sculptures like one of Noach’s teivah, complete with all the animals. Most people who visit enjoy looking at the beautiful creations and end up coming home with some brightly colored, perfectly sculpted candles as souvenirs.

FORTUNE IN A FLAME

Scientists have recently discovered that there are actually millions of tiny diamond nanoparticles in a flame. Of course, the element gets burned together with the candle, but somehow, the idea of flaming diamonds intrigues people. Perhaps there’s a reason that candle décor is so elegant.

CANDLES BY DIY DESIGN

You can buy candle-making kits or simply use ingredients around your house. Find an empty glass container, buy some wax, and twist a wick. Then, melt the wax in a pot. (Make sure the wax is kosher if you are using a pot you use for cooking.) You can add a few drops of food coloring to color the wax, if you wish. Stick the wick into the container, hold it in place with skewers, and pour the hot wax carefully into the container. There’s your candle!
