LIVING HISTORY

(Re: Country, Here We Come, Issue 189)

In your article about famous Jewish Catskill hotels, you wrote, “Unlike many descendants of other original hoteliers, some of the Gibber family children are great marbitzei Torah today.” There’s a very interesting story behind that remarkable family achievement.

Over the years, I have had the great privilege of attending the parsha shiur given by Rebbetzin Malka Paretzky (nee Gibber) in Monsey. She once described her paternal grandmother, Faiga Malka Gibber (for whom she is named), as the “glue” that kept the family together.

On a trip to Milwaukee to visit my daughter and her family, I found out what Zeidy and Bubby Gibber were all about. I picked up a book to read to my grandchildren and discovered that it was a most inspiring and delightful book by well-known children’s author Genendel Krohn (nee Gibber), consisting of true-life stories of mesiras nefesh for Shabbos. Genendel Krohn (who is Rebbetzin Paretzky’s niece) dedicated the book to her paternal great-grandparents — yes, that same Zeidy and Bubby Gibber, who chose to forgo a lucrative parnassah in the Gibber family hotel business when overruled by other family members to allow guests to check in to the hotel on Shabbos. After having their share of the business bought out, they invested the money they received in a chicken and egg farm, which subsequently burned down. Zeidy Gibber eventually eked out a living as a painter, and he and his wife remained proud shomrei Shabbos

I returned to Rebbetzin Paretzky’s shiur newly informed of her “family yichus” and jokingly told her that I had to go to Milwaukee to find out what she meant by her mysterious comment about her grandmother. Although I knew how Rebbetzin Paretzky’s side of the Gibber family had turned out (besides being a distinguished mechaneches and menaheles in her own right, she has a brother who is a rosh kollel in Minneapolis, another brother who is a distinguished rav in Brooklyn and yet another brother who is a rosh yeshiva in Providence, Rhode Island), I was curious to know how the side of the Gibber family that had remained in the hotel business had fared. “Unfortunately,” she replied, “they strayed far from the path and some of their descendants today are not even Jewish.”

Zeidy and Bubby Gibber, a”h, are surely shepping much Yiddishe nachas in Shamayim. Their fateful decision so many decades ago helped create a Torah dynasty. Yehi zichram baruch.

YOUR SAY

A LIGHT UNTO THE NATIONS

Thank you for your magnificent magazine and for the wellresearched and interesting topics you cover. I look forward to reading it weekly.

Recently, I had a troubling experience. I was in a local non-Jewish department store, and the cashier asked if I wanted to donate some money to charity. I said yes and told her to charge my card another dollar. She smiled sadly, looked at me, and said, “Religious Jews don’t usually give money to charity. You’re the first one.”

I was taken aback. If only she would know how much charity religious Jews give!

But what must she think when frum Yidden keep declining to give a dollar or two to people in need in India?

For a measly dollar or two, we can make a kiddush Hashem among our neighbors, who observe our every action, whether we like it or not.

Thank you for providing us with this platform.

The First Step

THERE WAS A LOT GOING ON in the world of global politics when America’s 33rd president, Harry Truman, was in office. There was the Korean War and the Cold War, an economy that was shifting from wartime to peacetime, and the historic decision to drop the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the same time, the world was making technological advances, providing new avenues of communication. Truman began to deliver weekly speeches to the public, providing updates on the goings-on and his plans for the upcoming week. The nation was glued to his speeches and followed every word in a quest to be in the know during those tumultuous times.

These speeches were scheduled for Friday nights at 8 p.m. To the White House staff, it seemed a fitting time — the end of the work week, just as the relaxation of the weekend was setting in. But to frum Yidden, this timing was problematic — not because they would have to forgo the updates, but because they worried about their less-committed brothers. It was a time when keeping Shabbos was a real challenge for many Yidden, and they feared that not everyone would have the stamina to withstand the nisayon. But what could they do?

One woman, a Mrs. Berl, was extremely pained by this issue. She could not bear to think of the dozens of families whose fathers would come home from shul and, instead of making Kiddush right away, would sit down to listen to the president.

She took a pen and paper and wrote:

To the Honorable President, Mr. Harry Truman, White House, Washington, D.C.:

First, I would like to express my gratitude for your wonderful leadership of our country.

I am so happy to hear that the President is beginning to address the nation weekly, and I would love to listen and feel part of the nation. But since I — and thousands like me — am a Sabbath-observant Jew, the timing of the address does not allow me this. We may not use any electronic device on the Sabbath, and therefore, we cannot listen to your important weekly talks. As such, I would like to request that the time of the address be changed.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Mrs. Berl signed the letter and mailed it to the White House. Of the heaps of mail that arrive at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, a very small percentage makes it to the president’s desk. Most of the mail is dealt with or discarded by the White House correspondence staff.

Amazingly, Mrs. Berl’s letter landed in the former category. A couple of days later, she received a letter signed by the White House. It was a short memo, informing her that the president had read her letter and was considering her request.

Exactly three weeks later, during his weekly address, the president informed the public that the schedule would be changed; the talks would no longer be held on Friday nights.

Mrs. Berl was astounded. She had not expected such results — and certainly not this quickly. She had simply wanted to do her part.

One simple woman, with one simple letter, and a national decision was made.

The Midrash says that Pinchas experienced twelve nissim as he rushed to stand up for Hashem’s honor. His action placed him in great danger, and without those miracles, he could not have succeeded.
In other words, it was one big miracle orchestrated by Hashem. As such, why did Pinchas merit such great reward?

FOREVER!

All that’s asked of us is to take that first step

What were the chances that her little note, written from her heart, would affect the course of history? She could easily have dismissed the idea as unrealistic or improbable. Yet, she did her part — and merited sparing much chillul Shabbos *

The Alshich explains that Pinchas merited his reward for his first step. After all, everything that a person does is really Hashem doing it for him. It’s all a gift. All that’s asked of us is to take that first step, make the first move, take that dive into the water, and Hashem takes care of the rest. That’s what Pinchas did: He took that first step, which ultimately effected great results. If he hadn’t kickstarted the process, he wouldn’t have merited those nissim.

When it comes to effecting change l’Shem Shamayim, all we must do is make the first move and allow Hashem to orchestrate the rest so we can reach our goal.

Never underestimate the power of one tiny step, one seemingly trivial move for the sake of Hashem. The results may be more dramatic than you can imagine!

Did You Know?

Among the great reward Pinchas reaped for his actions, he was given the kehunah. During Bayis Rishon, eighteen of the kohanim gedolim were descendants of Pinchas, and during Bayis Sheini, eighty were his grandsons!

Congestion Pricing Approved in NYC, Motorists Tapped To Fund MTA Deficit

Driving in Manhattan is going to get a lot more expensive, with the Federal Highway Administration approving a plan to hit motorists traveling south of 60th Street with pricey tolls.

New York’s congestion pricing plan is the first in the nation, and could have drivers paying as much as $23 to enter midtown by next spring, reported USA Today. Congestion pricing is expected to yield approximately $1 billion annually, funding that will go to the MTA, which has been struggling to survive. The plan’s details, such as exact cost and possible exemptions, are still murky, but opponents are vowing to pass legislation that would slash MTA funding in retaliation.

An exuberant Governor Kathy Hochul praised the congestion pricing plan during a June 27 press conference announcing its federal approval, advising midtown-bound travelers to become better acquainted with mass transit.

“With congestion pricing, New Yorkers have a lot to lose,” said Hochul. “How about 15 to 20% fewer vehicles in the central business district every single day? How about less air pollution, lower carbon emissions, lower speeds, fewer crashes? I don’t mind losing that.”

County Executive Ed Day blasted Hochul’s announcement, saying that the MTA’s inadequacies leave Rockland residents with no choice other than driving into Manhattan. He called on the MTA to exempt Rocklanders from congestion pricing, or to credit them for the Hudson River tolls that they are already paying to get to Manhattan.

“Rockland County commuters continue to be an afterthought in the congestion pricing conversation, with much emphasis placed on improving life in New York City, with little regard for the tax-paying members of the MTA outside the city,” said Day. “It is an insult to families who are already struggling to keep up with high gas prices and record-breaking inflation that Governor Kathy Hochul moved this plan forward.”

That outrage is shared across the river in New Jersey, with Governor Phil Murphy hiring high-profile attorneys to explore possible legal options, reported CBS New York. A spokesperson for Murphy criticized the agency for approving congestion pricing, calling it “yet another slight against hardworking New Jerseyans in favor of an agency concerned, not with removing vehicles from our roads, but with lining its own coffers.”

New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer described the MTA as being poorly run. The longtime critic of congestion pricing said that his constituents can’t believe that they are being hit with a second hefty toll when they already shell out $17

to cross the Hudson.

“They are looking for someone to pay the bills for their mismanagement, and they say, ‘We’ll make Jersey pay,’” said Gottheimer.

Also opposing the plan was New York Congressman Mike Lawler, who called it a “price grab.”

“The MTA, rather than getting their own books in order, including examining how on earth they spent more on consultants than the actual boring of the Second Avenue subway, has opted to squeeze suburban commuters even more,” said Lawler.

The Hudson Valley congressman predicted that congestion pricing will likely have significant repercussions that will negatively impact New York.

“If Governor Hochul and the MTA think this is the way to raise revenue, they’ll probably act shocked when more and more taxpayers continue to flee New York,” said Lawler. “For those common sense folks that remain in the state, this could be the final nail in the coffin on their decision to move away.”

Lieber took a different view of the situation, reported Spectrum News, insisting that drivers will come to terms with congestion pricing once they acclimate to a new reality.

“I honestly think that folks are going to live with this very easily because E-ZPass and the whole system makes it invisible,” said Lieber. “No one’s going to stop you at a toll booth. If you have to come to Manhattan, you’re going to come. It’s going to end up on your E-ZPass bill, and people are going to adjust.”

Adams Creates NYC’s First Jewish Advisory Council

Describing the Jewish community as “a critical part of New York City,” Mayor Eric Adams created the city’s first-ever Jewish advisory council, tapping 37 men and women to meet regularly to discuss relevant issues.

Adams made the announcement at a June 26 press conference and said that the council would focus on areas including public safety, quality of life and education, and would ensure that Jewish communities in the five boroughs would be connected to the many services provided by New York City.

“From the top of the Bronx to the bottom of Staten Island, the work and contributions of our Jewish brothers and sisters are felt across all five boroughs,” said the mayor. “With antiSemitic crimes up across the nation, our newly-formed Jewish Advisory Council will ensure that Jewish New Yorkers in every community have a seat at the table and have access to the support and resources the city offers.”

Members of the council represent the full spectrum of the Jewish community and include leaders of nonprofit and community-based organizations, as well as religious leaders. The council is being chaired by Joel Eisdorfer, senior advisor to the mayor, and a majority of its members are Orthodox. Members of the council include activist and Jewish Children’s Museum director Devorah Halberstam, Satmar community leader Rabbi Moshe Indig, Chevra Hatzalah CEO Rabbi Yehiel Kalish, Hamodia publisher Ruth Lichtenstein, Masbia executive director Alexander Rapaport, Yeshiva Darchei Torah director of institutional advancement Rabbi Baruch Rothman and Crown Heights Jewish Community Council executive vice president of government affairs Rabbi Chanina Sperlin.

“It is an absolute pleasure to serve,” tweeted council member Rabbi Baruch Rothman, director of institutional advancement at Yeshiva Darchei Torah. “Kudos to @NYCMayor for always pushing further.”

Tragedy Averted as Chaverim Rescues Baby From Locked Car

It was Chaverim to the rescue again, with members of the volunteer group coming to the aid of a six-month-old baby who was inadvertently locked inside a car.

The incident took place at 1:25 p.m. on July 2 in Spring Valley, when a member of Rockland Chaverim’s Shabbos patrol saw a group of people on Homer Lee Avenue gathered around a locked car. The car’s windows were closed and, according to Chaverim, both the baby and the keys had already been locked inside the vehicle for twenty minutes. It was a humid day, with temperatures hovering above 80 degrees.

Chaverim opened the car and rescued the baby, who was in respiratory distress and sweating profusely. Chaverim immediately provided first aid until medics arrived at the scene and transported the baby to Nyack Hospital.

In addition to urging parents never to leave their children in cars even for short periods of time, Chaverim emphasized the importance of calling for emergency help immediately should a child be locked inside a car. In the event that help cannot come within a few minutes, Chaverim recommends breaking a car window or door (without injuring the child).

“The importance of acting quickly in situations of this nature cannot be overstated,” said Chaverim coordinator Yossi Margaretten.

“When something like this happens, they shouldn’t wait twenty minutes,” said Margaretten. “Every second counts.”

Hoping to prevent potential tragedies, Chaverim is distributing free reminder tags to drivers that they can hang from the rearview mirrors of their cars. The tags read, “Never leave a child alone in a car,” and are available at the Chaverim office, located at 6 Olympia Lane, Monsey, New York.

As Community Grows, Chaveirim Adds Sixteen New Members

Sixteen local residents have joined Chaveirim, signing up to lend a helping hand at all hours of the day and night, 365 days a year.

BoroPark24 reported that Chaveirim has expanded along with the community, serving a greater number of people in an ever-increasing number of ways. All volunteers are screened by Chaveirim, which considers where they live and work, as well as their availability to respond to calls during daytime hours. Longtime Chaveirim coordinator Yitzy Kraus said candidates undergo a vetting process that includes rabbinical references and assesses prospective members’ professionalism and suitability.

“Our goal is to provide white-glove service to anyone in need, and that means being able to respond quickly and with expertise to every kind of call,” said Kraus.

One of Chaveirim’s newest recruits is actually a prior member who took an extended break from serving, but decided to return to the organization. Two are brothers of current members, while two more have fathers who are Chaveirim members.

Chaveirim also announced the appointment of two new coordinators: Shloimy Fleishman (B142) and Mendy Fisher (C38).

Postal Window Clerk Indicted for Massive Money Order Scheme

A Brooklyn woman was indicted last week after being charged with allegedly stealing more than $160,000 while working in a post office on the outskirts of Boro Park.

Sherrin Saddler, 34, allegedly took cash from customers for money orders at the Parkville Station post office on 20th Avenue and 66th Street, then pocketed the money and canceled the money orders. According to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Saddler carried out her scheme 180 times between November 15, 2019, and July 30, 2020. All of the money orders were found to have been voided when they were returned to the U.S. Federal Reserve for accounting, with an audit revealing that all had originated at the Parkville Station facility.

Saddler was arraigned in Brooklyn Supreme Court on June 29 on an indictment charging her with second-degree grand larceny, official misconduct and 180 counts of first-degree falsification of business records. She was released without bail and is due back in court on September 13.

Gonzalez said that Saddler had betrayed the public trust for personal gain and would be held accountable for her actions.

“Public corruption will not be tolerated in Brooklyn,” said Gonzalez.

CHAPTER 13

Recap: Chaim Tzvi asks the construction crew to return to work for one week, but this arrangement makes Lani nervous. At work, Riva discovers a crack in Shuli Nieder’s veneer.

She’d grossly underestimated her reliance on Maddie.

Lani sprayed Clorox over the bathtub and picked up her scrub brush. Cramped basement notwithstanding, the bathroom had to be cleaned, and with Maddie dismissed, the job was all hers.

The problem was that she really didn’t have time — she had a million things to take care of before Pesach, plus she had a dentist appointment with her girls that afternoon. And besides, she really, seriously hated cleaning.

Still, there was something satisfying about a gleaming bathtub that you’d scoured on your own, and somewhat more energetically, she sprayed Windex on the mirror over the sink and swiped a sheet of paper towel vertically over it.

She was done with the bathroom and was plugging in the vacuum cleaner to start the bedroom floor when Riva called.

“Hi, is this Break In?” Riva asked, all

politely. “Can I place an order?”

“Tee hee. What do you want?”

“To place an order!”

“Oh.” Lani rested her toe over the vacuum cleaner’s power button, debating if she should try to talk over the noise. “Like, a real order? Okay, what do you want to order? For whom? For when?”

“A nice breakfast package. For my coworker, Adina Gartenhaus.” She paused, and Lani detected a note of satisfaction in that small, empty space. “It’s from the whole office staff. We want to send her something really special. And we want to support your business, of course,” she finished with a little laugh.

They want to — what?

Lani kicked the vacuum canister and watched it roll forward and crash into the hallway wall.

So this was what this was all about? Supporting her business?

A peace offering, seriously. Her sister wouldn’t extend her loan, but look, she

could order a breakfast! Because that would surely be the solution to all of Lani’s problems. She would actually be able to afford… Maddie. For almost one entire day.

A band-aid — to stop a hemorrhage.

Lani walked over to the canister and stepped on the power button with extra force. “Text me the address and what you want me to include,” she said, the roar of the vacuum drowning the terseness in her voice. “I need to go now.”

As soon as she hung up, she turned off the vacuum cleaner. That was it; she did not feel up to cleaning for one more minute. Let the house fly. Too bad.

She didn’t accomplish much over the next hour. She thought about throwing together supper, or folding some laundry, or maybe just sitting down to write her Pesach list, but instead she idled away the day until it was time to go pick up her girls and take them to the dentist.

The waiting room at the dentist was packed, and Lani resigned herself to the fact that, forget it, she wasn’t going to get a single thing done that day and she should just make peace with it. She took out a Tehillim and started saying some words, but after one short kapitel, her head drooped and her eyes closed on her.

Catnaps make for the best sleep. Her thoughts drifted pleasantly away from the frenzy of her life, and she sank deep into some sweet, abstract oblivion. Kids in the waiting room played and cried and made a whole lot of noise, but Lani didn’t hear a thing. It was just wonderful.

She jerked awake when she heard the name Eisdorf being called. Back to reality.

“Whom are we starting with?” the hygienist asked.

Before Lani had a chance to answer, Malky kicked Chevi and muttered, so quietly that Lani was sure she was imagining it, “With you, baby. You

have stinky, yellow teeth because you never brush them.”

Lani gulped. “Malky?!”

Malky shrugged. “I could go first if you want.”

“I do not…” Chevi started. She didn’t finish the sentence. Her face turned pink and she lowered her head stiffly.

The hygienist hadn’t heard Malky, it seemed. She pulled gloves over her hands and turned to the kids. “Well? Who will it be? It won’t hurt, I promise.”

Malky hopped onto the chair, her face completely impassive. Shana sat down on the radiator in the corner of the room and slumped her shoulders, evidently bored.

And Chevi, Lani observed, trudged over to the windowsill and stared outside.

She couldn’t see her face. But she didn’t have to see anything to taste the tears that filled her daughter’s throat. * * * * *

Riva stepped into the house after work and stopped short.

At her dining room table — which housed two loads of laundry waiting to be folded — sat Yaakov.

With company.

It was a man with a neatly trimmed white beard. Riva pegged him at 65 years, or maybe a bit older. He was wearing a light blue shirt, the top button open to reveal a very prominent Adam’s apple.

His elbow rested but a few inches

Riva’s eyes flew from the man to Yaakov to the laundry, until Yaakovtered his fingers to indicate that… what? That he was in a meeting? Well,

Riva considered gathering all thecided against it; maybe if she didn’t associate with the offensive mess, it -

“So?” she started again.

“Yeah, so Reuven Bleich, he’s an architect. He’s doing this for like 30-something years, really experienced. But you know the type, he draws his plans on grid paper, totally old school.” He made a bracha and took a sip of coffee. “And he isn’t interested in studying any computer software at this point. He prefers to outsource that part of the work.”

“Okay.”

“Okay, so he wants to outsource some of the CAD work… to me.”

“Oh! Oh, wow, Yaakov, that’s really great news!”

“Yeah? Even with laundry on the dining room table? It didn’t turn him off, by the way.”

“So you did notice.”

“Maybe I did,” he admitted. “Maybe he also did. Who cares? I got the job. He gave me the first project to digitize.” He swirled the coffee with his straw. “But yikes, I’m nervous. Am I nuts for doing this? I have no experience. What am I thinking?”

“Well, it’s so hot in here, should I make some iced coffees and we’ll have

Yaakov headed over to the kitchen and pulled two smoothie cups out ofing as he dissolved coffee and sugar intion into each of the smoothie cups,

“Yes, yes, one minute.” He added ice cubes, fastened lids over the cups, and stuck a smoothie straw into each one.

Riva took the cup and saluted him

“You’re thinking that this is a great opportunity to gain experience. I’m so happy for you, Yaakov. I know you’ll be great. I mean it.”

“I guess it doesn’t hurt that he’s actually going to pay me for doing this.”

It wasn’t much, but it was a starting point. A source of income outside the paycheck Riva brought home every week. She drew lines through the condensation on her cup. Apprenticeship, plus income. Was it reasonable to start picturing a life outside of Kleenup?

She heard the phone ringing inside the house. “Wow, it’s late. I must go in to prepare supper. Congratulations, Yaakov.” She picked up her cup for a mock toast.

She reached the phone on the last ring. It was that Indig lady, Lani’s neighbor. Gittel?

“Hiiiii,” she said. “How’s it going with the cleaning?”

“Slowly, slowly,” Riva said, filling a pot with water and turning the flame on high. “Getting there.”

“You don’t get there before you get there, huh. Good thing we have a deadline, right?”

Okay, what did she want?

“That’s right,” Riva agreed.

“Anyway, I wanted to ask you, I know

Maddie never works on Sunday, but do you think she would want to do it just this once? My daughter Shaindy desperately needs cleaning help; her lady quit on her from one minute to the next.”

No, no, please not. She didn’t care about Sunday, but she really didn’t want to share Maddie. She knew how these things worked; you get cleaning help once, and then you feel like you’re an equal partner in the woman’s schedule. And then, when Riva would want to get some extra hours before Pesach, she’d have to consider this Shaindy person who desperately needed cleaning help. Besides, Maddie really didn’t like working on Sunday, and Riva and Lani always respected that and hardly ever asked her to make exceptions.

But how could she explain this without being rude? Why did Lani have to go and give up Maddie? They’d had a perfect arrangement for so many years.

The water in the pot was bubbling. Riva added a drop of oil, poured in the ziti, and lowered the flame.

“You think it’s a problem?” Mrs. Indig asked. “If it doesn’t work out, I’ll give up some of my hours for her. I’m just trying my luck with Sunday.”

“Maddie really doesn’t like working on Sundays,” Riva answered truthfully. “I don’t know what to say.”

She stirred the pasta.

Mrs. Indig said, “Hmm,” and then she abruptly switched topics. “By the way, this is none of my business or anything, I just thought I should tell you, because Lani’s your sister. I’m wondering if you know what’s going on?”

Riva poked her wooden spoon through a group of noodles that had pasted to each other. She didn’t like this. She had no idea what her sister’s neighbor wanted from her, but she had no interest in discussing anything

that, by her own admission, was none of her business.

“What do you mean?” she asked cautiously. She took parchment paper out of the drawer and ripped off a piece to line her pan.

“I mean about her house. You know, construction.” Mrs. Indig’s voice dropped to a dramatic low pitch. “I think your sister is in trouble.”

Riva let the parchment paper float down to the counter. The kitchen suddenly felt very hot. “Uh, why do you say that?”

“I don’t see any workers coming and going anymore. If you ask me, I think the Eisdorfs are short on funds. I know it’s normal, these kinds of things happen. I see it with my Shaindy’s construction, everything costs so much more than she thought, although baruch Hashem, she was able to take out a construction loan.”

Riva wanted to bang the phone down, cut this woman’s chatter off. But Mrs. Indig wasn’t done.

“Anyway,” she went on, “I thought it’s important that you know this. I’m not sure how much Lani shares with you. She has her pride, obviously. But you’re family, and I was just thinking, maybe there’s a way that you could help?”

dyslexia correction program From the desk of a grateful parent*

My 11 year old son was struggling to read. We sent him to many tutors but saw no improvement, and his anxiety and frustration was worsening each passing day. At first, he refused to go for any additional help, but 3 months ago he agreed to go to Mosaic since it is a fun and exciting program.

This past shabbos, I was delighted and pleasantly surprised to see him for the very first time relaxing on the couch while reading a book!

When Mosaic came onto the scene, I was eager to see how the Davis method would be implemented -- and I was not disappointed. The students who joined the program made progress almost immediately. We saw tremendous strides in their reading levels. As a result, their confidence and overall performance improved. They used their tools they were learning at Mosaic to help them across all subjects.

Davis Math mastery

Meet the 5-day program , the starting point that permanently corrects dyslexia and other reading and behavioral challenges. The Mosaic learning center is a place where children get to discover the beauty of the written word. The only of it’s kind, our center encourages a love of learning while helping children develop their reading skills. We believe that reading should be enjoyable and we aim to make that a reality for every child that joins our program. Our sincere facilitators creatively lead each individual on their specialized path to success in a cheerful and comforting atmosphere. CHAPTER 4

SHLOIMY TAUBER AND LIPA KISH

Buying a home will likely be the largest purchase of your life. That’s why it’s so important to know what you’re getting into before you buy… and to buy within your means. It can be the difference between being “house poor” or building generational wealth. Buying within your means can turn your home into an investment that you can leverage to achieve other financial goals in the future. Work with a professional to determine your buying power before you take the plunge.

Sometimes clients don’t realize how much buying power they actually have. Take the Meyer* family. They moved from rental to rental for years, frustrated every time the rent went up with each new lease. When I met Mr. Meyer at a simcha, he told me about his rental woes, saying, “Rent costs too much, but paying a mortgage costs much more. What can I do?”

I told him this: When you pay rent, you are paying a mortgage — your landlord’s. If you can afford your rent, you most likely can afford a monthly payment on a house, even if you have less than 20% for a down payment.

I invited the Meyers to speak with me about their options. We discussed their income, savings and debt and determined that they could purchase a home in a year if they followed the savings plan we laid out. They could afford the monthly payment MORTGAGE
WITHIN YOUR MEANS

on an average three-bedroom house in the neighborhood of their choice. It would be, in other words, a purchase that was within their means. They followed the plan diligently, saved enough to put down 10% on a house, and moved in. They now live in their own house with a 30-year fixed mortgage.

Some of our clients have been living beyond their means and have racked up significant credit card debt — paying 20% interest or more. Others have faced unforeseen expenses due to illness or loss of income. Ark can help with a debt consolidation loan for current homeowners. This means using the equity on their home to pay off their high-interest debt faster and with significantly less interest.

But that may not always be the answer. A client contacted me to help them through a tough time. After purchasing their house five years ago, the Greens* suffered a car accident that left Mrs. Green with medical issues that made it difficult to work. Overwhelmed by medical bills and a mortgage that was suddenly half their income, they thought debt consolidation was their best option.

After breaking down multiple refinance scenarios, it became clear that debt consolidation would make it even harder to pay their bills. The Greens’ best option, we concluded, was to downsize. We worked together to figure out a monthly payment that would be within their means, and they used the equity they had built over the five years in their old home to purchase their new home. They now have a mortgage they can afford and are working their way out of debt.

Living in a home you can afford is one of the pillars of financial wellbeing. A good mortgage advisor can help you find out what an affordable loan amount is and show you how that will play out for years to come.

8 oz purple cabbage

8 oz feta cheese, crumbled

Peanut butter dressing, for dipping (recipe below)

3. Pile some purple cabbage and the feta cheese on top.

4. Fold the top and bottom of the wrapper over the filling. Fold the left side on top, then continue rolling tightly to the right, until the wrapper is closed and snug. Place the roll seam-side-down on a lined baking sheet, and cover it with a damp towel.

5. Repeat these steps with the remaining wrappers and filling, adding more water to the pie pan as needed.

NESANEL YOEL SAFRAN

You may be familiar with Chesed of Boro Park, an organization that provides free non-emergency transportation for patients and their family and friends to hospitals and medical facilities near and far — even all the way to Boston or Ohio.

Over the years, those who need outpatient therapies, as well as family members staying with patients in the hospital, have enjoyed free and comfortable rides in a “ chesed car.” Some of these volunteer drivers take people along with them on their daily commutes, and others base their driving schedules around their passengers’ needs.

Who are these special, dedicated drivers who give so much of their time and resources for this tremendous chesed?

We contacted three drivers to find out.

NAME: Tzvi Rosenbaum*

RESIDENCE: Boro Park

DRIVING FOR CHESED SINCE: 2019

HOSPITALS SERVED: Manhattan hospitals

NUMBER OF TRIPS: Approximately 20 each month

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START DRIVING FOR CHESED?

Four years ago, I spent the summer weeks alone in the city while my family was in the country. I saw that I had some extra time and wanted to dedicate it to a good cause. I’d heard of this chesed organization and decided to apply. At first, I volunteered only during the summer months, but eventually it developed into something I do year-round.

My chesed-driving schedule revolves around my daily commute from Boro Park to my office in the Bronx. Although the chesed detours can take me 30 to 45 minutes out of my way, I don’t mind. Since I’m already sitting in traffic every day, I may as well try to help somebody out and chap arein a chesed

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TRIP?

I once took a father and his bar mitzvah–aged son to the hospital for oncology care. They had come from Eretz Yisroel for treatment, and they didn’t know Yiddish and spoke very little English. They would get into the car with their big traveling bag, take out a Gemara, and father and son would learn together throughout the trip as if nothing unusual was going on in their lives. When I’d pick them up on the way back — it was during the winter, when it gets dark early — despite being exhausted by their day, they’d ask me if I could put on the light in the back seat, and again they’d

learn, mamash the whole time. It was unbelievable.

Sometimes I drive mothers who are going to be with a hospitalized child. They spend the whole car ride making calls, figuring out where their other kids are going to stay, or where they’ll be for Shabbos. Often the other kids call them while they’re in the car, and these harried Yiddishe mammes try their best to sound upbeat so their kids will feel that things are as normal as possible. My heart goes out to these devoted parents who have to juggle all of this while in a car, stuck in traffic.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST SATISFYING MOMENT?

One Chol Hamoed I took a parent and child home from the hospital where they’d been since the first days of Yom Tov. When we arrived at their home in Boro Park, the whole family came rushing out, filled with simcha at their return. It felt so good to have been the shaliach to reunite a Yiddishe family.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO DO THIS?

I encourage others to consider becoming a chesed driver. If you drive into the city to go to work anyway, or if you’re simply looking for another way to do some good, give it a try. Do a mitzvah, and you’ll see how fulfilling it is.

Many people don’t realize that most chesed drivers have large families and busy schedules. The volunteer base isn’t composed solely of retirees. It’s just that we make it our business to include chesed in our lives, and we see the bracha it brings us.

17,565 RIDES

Even if it’s only once a week, it makes a real difference. People who have a choleh in the house have enough expenses, and if you can save them a hundred dollars for a taxi, you’re doing them a real chesed. Everyone has different resources and talents they can give to the community. It’s always worthwhile to try to find a way to be a giver, a nosein.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE COMMUNITY, AND WITH THE PEOPLE YOU’RE TRANSPORTING?

Most people we drive are very nice and polite, but sometimes people can lose focus in the midst of all of the upheaval they’re going through. Try not to talk too loudly on your phone. Of course, certain practical things have to be taken care of, but if you just want to schmooze with your friend since you’re going to be in the car for an hour, it’s not tzniusdik, it’s not right. Remember, you’re not in a taxi.

Also, if you ask for a ride at a certain time, try to be ready on time. If you arrange to meet me outside the hospital, don’t start coming down from the sixth floor when I’m there already, as it’s likely to take another ten minutes. Of course, unexpected hospital related delays sometimes occur, which are understandable.

Another tip: If you need a ride to get to an appointment, give yourself extra time. Don’t call us at the last minute. You can never know if the driver is going to have to pick up more people after you, or if there’ll be unusual traffic. Save yourself the pressure and from putting pressure on the driver, who can only do his best. Especially for people who don’t drive, or don’t drive in Boro Park, please realize that things can take longer than you’d imagine — so give yourself enough time.

DRIVING FOR CHESED SINCE: 2017

HOSPITALS SERVED: NYC hospitals (Manhattan and Brooklyn), Westchester, as well as hospitals in Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore (an eight-hour round trip)

NUMBER OF TRIPS: 750 calls (often with several passengers at a time) the first year, slightly fewer in subsequent years

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START DRIVING FOR CHESED?

A boy I knew named Moishe*, from New York, was hospitalized in Baltimore and wanted family members to visit him. He knew about Chesed of Monsey and convinced me to start driving for them so I could bring his family. So I started doing it, at first as a zechus for his refuah sheleimah then l’ilui nishmaso

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TRIP?

I once took two women to two different hospitals in Manhattan, and I overheard them talking. One of them was very nervous, and the other woman asked her why.

The first woman explained that she was going in to get a procedure done. The second woman then asked her what kind of surgery she was having, and when she heard what it was, she said, “Oh, I just had that same operation done a few weeks ago. It’s nothing, just in and out!” I could hear how this calmed the first patient immediately. It was real hashgacha pratis that they’d traveled in the same ride.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST SATISFYING MOMENT?

In general, doing this is satisfying. I feel that I get more out of it than I give. It feels good to know that I can give people a comfortable car and a smile. I also know that many people would never go to visit and assist people in the hospital if they didn’t know that they had a ride going and returning. This applies even to people who have cars, because there’s often no parking available.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO DO THIS?

Always keep the scheduling official. Take all your ride requests through the dispatcher.

I’ve driven some people 70 or 80 times. Of course, they get to know you and know your schedule, and they may begin to call you directly for rides. In those cases, it can be hard to say no even when the timing isn’t right. This can lead to pressure and to burnout. Rather, follow the organization’s policy about having callers reach out to dispatch. Then they can call you, and if you’re able to do it, fine, and if not, not. And in the event you aren’t available, they’ll find somebody else who can do it.

Also, don’t think you’re going to lose out by devoting time to chesed I’ve seen time and again that my business succeeds much more on days I give rides than on the days that I don’t. It goes smoother, faster and easier. You never lose out.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE COMMUNITY, AND WITH THE PEOPLE YOU’RE TRANSPORTING?

You should know that we’re not just free taxi drivers. We’re in this with you and we want to help you. We don’t know your pain, but we understand that you’re in pain and we are participating in what you are going through. We want to make it easier for you by doing our part, and we wish you a refuah sheleimah.

NUMBER OF TRIPS: Generally, one trip each morning, plus evening trips as needed. The overall tally is some 100,000 miles of driving for chesed over the course of 1,800 trips.

Unlike some other drivers, who pick up people on their way to work in the city, I work in Monsey, so all of my drives are special trips. I generally leave Monsey at 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. and make sure to be back home in time for my 7:00 a.m.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START DRIVING FOR CHESED?

I always liked volunteering and helping people, but I wanted to find a way to do it that fits my personality. I’m not so comfortable with more highprofile, emergency volunteer work, so I was drawn to chesed driving, as there’s nothing externally showy about it in any way. I was also drawn to it by the high quality of the volunteers: serious working people, maggidei shiur and even dayanim.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE TRIP?

I once drove from Monsey to Westchester Hospital. When the dispatcher called me, he gave me the heads-up that the people I’d be transporting didn’t look like our typical clientele. Sure enough, it was a secular-looking couple with their baby; they had come from Israel for medical treatment. Later, the dispatcher asked me if I’d be willing to become their regular driver since I am fluent in Hebrew and was comfortable driving them. I agreed, and I drove them to the hospital and back many times over their monthlong stay.

When their treatment regimen was finished, I also drove them to the airport for their flight home to Israel. It was then that the husband told me, “Listen, I live in Israel on a kibbutz. We’re traditional, but not so observant. We came here for a procedure for our baby, and we figured we’d be able to manage everything on our own. But although we knew some English, we couldn’t understand what the doctors were saying. We also had no place to stay and didn’t know where to get kosher food.

“After a few days of confusion,” the man continued, “Jewish nurse saw us in the hospital and told us about the Bikur Cholim room where we could sit and which provided food. The man who takes care of that room saw us there and asked us about ourselves and why we were here. When we told him our story, he immediately said, “Don’t worry, we’ll take care of you.” They arranged a free apartment for us in Monsey, a translator at the hospital, and for a chesed driver — you — to drive us back and forth.”

The man had tears in his eyes. He said, “Growing up on the kibbutz, all I knew of chareidim was what I’d seen on television: footage of them throwing stones on Shabbos. If someone had told me that the chareidim did the types of things they did for us here, I would never in my life have believed them. This has changed my entire outlook on chareidim!”

It was a great kiddush Hashem. But the

Chesed of Boro Park

Chesed of Boro Park provides transportation to and from hospitals and medical facilities for hospitalized patients and their family members, as well as for outpatients traveling for treatment.

Unfortunately, we do not provide rides for people traveling to a regular doctor’s appointment.

Every patient requiring transportation needs to be registered with our organization, both so they can learn how the system works and to avoid miscommunication.

If you’ve benefited from Chesed of Boro Park and want to express your gratitude, you can do so by donating to our organization as a zechus for a refuah or yeshuah for someone, or l’ilui nishmas a loved one.

be quiet, that’s fine, but sometimes being in the car together for a long ride can allow two people to engage in conversation even though they might seem different from each other, and wouldn’t necessarily converse in a different situation. I’ve taught myself not to be judgmental and label other Yidden based on their appearance. When we break through these barriers and really speak and connect, it’s both a joyous and an eye-opening experience — for both of us.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO DO THIS?

People should come into it from a feeling of really wanting to help, because it’s not a flashy chesed, and they’re not going to get a lot of outside acknowledgment for it. Inside acknowledgment is a different story. We have amazing coordinators and a member service team. In addition to helping us cover the costs of gas and tolls, the organization hosts an amazing annual appreciation dinner and always acknowledges our work throughout the year.

My second piece of advice for someone looking to start driving for chesed is to get your schedule clear and make a serious but realistic commitment. Sometimes people jump in the deep end, making trip after trip. I see this as a red flag. A person can easily burn out that way. Don’t overdo it; don’t try to be the topdriving member right away. Start slowly, and build yourself up.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE COMMUNITY, AND WITH THE PEOPLE YOU’RE TRANSPORTING?

truth is that whenever any Yid, frum or not, receives this help, it’s a kiddush Hashem, even if it’s not as obvious.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST SATISFYING MOMENT?

Many drivers are afraid to drive in the snow, but not me. I see it as a challenge. There was once a major snowstorm here, and since there were fewer drivers available, a lot of people were waiting, so I made a number of trips back and forth to medical facilities. It felt satisfying to help people while also successfully meeting a challenge.

You should know that we enjoy driving you and we want to do it for you. But there are a few things we’d like you to know. It often bothers drivers when people talk on their phones. I joke (only to myself, I don’t tell it to them) that if you want to talk on the phone, please put it on speaker, because I can’t just listen to one side of the conversation! Of course, if it’s regarding an important matter, no one minds, but if it’s simple chatting with friends, this is not the place for it.

Second, please follow the new seatbelt law: Every person in the car has to put on a seatbelt.

Also, please remember that our cars are not ambulances and our service is not for emergencies. Once, a driver picked up a passenger, and it ended up being an emergency. They had to stop in the middle of the ride and call Hatzolah. If it’s an emergency, please call them and not us — for your own safety.

Also, while the organization’s policy doesn’t allow for personal conversation with passengers, sometimes a passenger will simply open up his broken heart, and I do my best, when appropriate, to listen kindly and give him chizuk. If he chooses to To

Lessons learned on the receiving end

I stood at the window, worried, and looked up at the sky with its cloudy promise of an impending storm. I wondered if anyone would be reckless enough — or selfless enough — to travel on such a day. Apparently not, since my phone had been eerily quiet throughout the hour since I’d called the chesed organization to request a ride. Then it rang.

Your call has been covered, the automated message informed me. There will be a black minivan at your home at 6:25 p.m.

A wave of relief rushed over me as I hit the prompt to be connected to the driver to confirm that I could still make it in time.

Because, snow as it might and storm as it would, I needed to get to Manhattan. My child at the hospital needed me. Even more, I needed to be there with him. And no forbidding forecast could keep me away — if only I could find a way to get there.

“Are you traveling there anyway?” I asked the driver, feeling overwhelmed at the thought of someone risking this drive just for me. “The weather is going to be bad, and…”

“I really don’t appreciate that question,” the driver said.

I bit my tongue, embarrassed.

“I do this because I choose to do chesed. Does it really matter what my calculations are? If I offered to do this, it’s because I want to do this chesed and get you to your destination.”

I apologized and humbly accepted his generous offer — a ride to Manhattan in what would turn out to be the messiest weather of the winter.

And it didn’t really matter that I ended up learning that taking me to my destination meant a detour en route to where the driver was headed and not a special trip. Because I had learned one of my first lessons on how to accept a chesed

Accepting help has always been hard for me. Asking for help, nearly impossible.

I like to be self-sufficient. If I need something, I prefer to figure it out on my own. I like to pay my way through life, or deal with my needs on my own.

In the past, if I needed to get to Manhattan — and I did — I would take a taxi or have my husband drive me. Or I would take a bus or train and figure out how to get to my destination from there.

But to have someone, a stranger, go out of their way just because I needed something? That wasn’t something I could handle.

The thought of someone giving of their precious time because I needed to get somewhere paralyzed me. The thought of someone sharing their resources with me gave me intense anxiety.

But when I became a daily commuter to the hospital, juggling a family at home and a child recovering, I learned some lessons — lessons in receiving. Lessons in accepting the chesed so selflessly and generously offered by caring fellow Yidden who just want to make the going easier for people with close ones at the hospital.

These chesed services are not even meant for me, I would rationalize. It’s probably for those who absolutely can’t afford the taxi fare. (Can anyone really afford daily private transportation?) It’s for those dealing with family members with debilitating illnesses — not me, whose child will be fine. Whose child is struggling with a stressful bump in the road that, b’ezras Hashem, won’t have lifelong consequences. Surely if these baalei chesed would know why I’m going to the hospital, they’d

feel resentful. Surely they assume my situation is much more complicated than it actually is.

Yet the fact was that I did have a child in the hospital for several months. The fact was that I needed help to get there.

And the benefactors of Klal Yisroel’s multifaceted chesed machine taught me so much about gracious giving — and, on the flip side, about gracious taking.

Aride I won’t forget took place on Shushan Purim, when the schedule was so helter-skelter that I was able to untangle myself from the mess on the home front only when the sun was already high in the sky.

After I almost gave up on getting a ride that day, someone accepted my call. The man who arrived must have been nearly my father’s age, definitely around retirement age, and a deep wave of discomfort hit me as I settled into the car. It felt so wrong. Did I actually make this man, the head of a large family and double my age, set out on one of the most overwhelming days of the year to drive me to Manhattan in the thick of traffic?

As we turned on to the highway, my fears were confirmed. There was no one else on whom I could blame this ride. I was the sole passenger.

“I feel so bad,” I mumbled. “I hope you’re not traveling especially because of me.” (Apparently, I hadn’t yet learned my lesson.)

“What does that even mean?” he retorted good-naturedly. “I didn’t come out for you. I came out because I want to do chesed. And if you’d be my daughter, or my sister, or my cousin? I wouldn’t think twice about driving you. This is how I view helping any Yid in need.”

I was blown away, because I could tell he meant it. The gears in my brain started to shift, at least a bit. This selfless man was doing what he wanted to do. And I… I needed the help. These baalei chesed were happy to give it.

“But I always feel bad,” I said. “Because maybe I should be taking a taxi instead of making busy people go out of their way just for me.”

“You should never deprive a Yid of the opportunity to do a chesed,” the driver said with conviction, and then shared with me some stories from his career as a Hatzolah mem-

ber, driving the point home: We are all volunteers who want to give our time to help Yidden in need.

This encounter changed my attitude a lot, and I opened up a bit more to receiving.

Another stormy day, a rainy Monday in March, solidified the message. I was in a packed car filled with passengers who were getting a ride home from various hospitals. As we got off the highway, the driver started planning his drop-off route. It turned out that all of the passengers lived in one area, and I was at the opposite side of town — and from the twitch on the driver’s face when he heard my home address, it seemed like I was seriously out of the way for him. We had sat in traffic for a while, and he must have been running way later than he had expected.

Since I was so uncomfortable taking even one smidgen more than necessary, I offered to get off at another stop and find a way home. The driver hesitated, saying, “Chesed is about taking the passengers home to the door. But if it’s definitely not a problem, and you have a ride home, I’d drop you off somewhere else.”

“No, it’s not a problem at all,” I assured him. “I can easily have a ride home.” That ride would be a car service, but I wasn’t going to let him know that. Far be it from me to be the cause of a person being late.

I got off in the pouring rain on a random driveway, called a taxi, and eventually got home, maybe a little worse for the wear because of it. It was just another little straw on a very exhausted camel’s back, which soon faded into the rest of the bundle.

But not for long. Just a few days later, on Erev Shabbos, the episode came back into focus.

I had requested a car from the hospital about four hours before the zman, which seemed like a safe plan to allow for travel time and last-minute Shabbos preparations once I’d get home. As I buckled my seatbelt, an important call came in to the driver. A patient had been cleared for discharge and needed to get home before Shabbos. The driver checked with me if it was okay to travel an extra half-hour to that other hospital and then set out to do just that, putting himself right into the thick of Manhattan traffic to get across the island. The half-hour

turned into an hour, then an hour and a half, and by the time we got onto the FDR, rush hour had turned the highway into a parking lot. We sat. And moved a bit. And sat and moved a bit for the next two hours or so, miraculously making our way into town with barely fifteen minutes left until Shabbos.

The driver still needed to drop each of us passengers at two opposite sides of town, and get himself home too. And so, the wonderful organization sent another driver who was waiting at the first stop to take me home directly so I could maximize those last few minutes that remained of Erev Shabbos.

I shouldn’t have been as shocked as I was to see that the driver that was awaiting me was the very driver who had taken me almost to my door just a few days prior. Hashem had sent him to finish his chesed — to take me home right up to my door. But maybe even more, to teach me to allow a person to do the chesed for me all the way.

And so, I opened up to taking: to accepting the repeated offers of meals (even though I could buy takeout); to accept the child care offers (even though I could hire a sitter); to accept help with logistics (even though I could twist myself into a pretzel to figure things out).

Because I am part of a nation of chesed. I am privileged to be at the center of a hub of kindness. And sometimes it’s my place to be a humble recipient.

Then Pesach inched closer, a full three-day Yom Tov. And my child was not home yet, despite our desperate hopes that he would be.

When I stood at the end of the phone, touched literally to tears upon hearing that I could have a beautiful apartment near the hospital, one that could accommodate our entire family, I knew I had once again discovered the hidden greatness of strangers who care. The apartment was fully furnished, I was assured, cleaned for Pesach and fully kashered, with fresh linens on the beds. Ready for us to walk in.

And instead of protesting, “No, please don’t bother. We’ll bring the grape juice!” I whispered, “Wow, thank you. You are making something so impossible doable for us.” And as I choked up in relief, I knew I had learned a thing or two about gracious taking.

I remember the call well. It came in the middle of the night, some 30 years ago. I grabbed my bag of medical equipment and rushed over to West Maple Avenue in Monsey. The dispatcher said an elderly patient needed help. I had no inkling that I would be entering the Schwab home, to treat the legendary Rabbi Mordechai Schwab, zt”l, Mashgiach of Mesivta Beis Shraga.

The mashgiach was unwell, but before I even had a chance to check his vitals or ask about the symptoms that had prompted him to call Hatzolah, Rabbi Schwab said, “Please forgive me!”

I exchanged glances with a second Hatzolah member who had arrived at the scene. “Why does the mashgiach need our forgiveness?” we asked.

“I woke you up in the middle of the night and troubled you to get out of bed, schlep your heavy bag, and come here,” Rabbi Schwab stated simply.

“That’s exactly what Hatzolah is for!” I countered. “We do this on a daily basis!”

“Still, I want to ask mechilah for troubling you!”

We assured Rabbi Schwab that we forgave him wholeheartedly, and then we began to treat him. After checking his blood

pressure, pulse and other symptoms, we decided that a paramedic was necessary.

Back then, Hatzolah of Rockland was a much smaller operation than it is today, as the community itself was much smaller. We had a team of EMTs, but no paramedics of our own. Whenever there was a call that necessitated a more specialized response, we would reach out to Ramapo Paramedic Service (RPS), and they would send a skilled paramedic who was not necessarily Jewish.

I grabbed my radio and messaged the dispatcher to send us a paramedic immediately. Then we waited. It took several minutes until the paramedics arrived — much longer than the response time of our frum paramedics today.

Still, Rabbi Schwab did not lose his presence of mind for a

144 www.thebpview.com 718.408.8770 The Boro Park View July 5, 2023

moment.

He watched the paramedics rush inside, lugging a large medical bag that was a lot heavier than ours, as it contained a defibrillator and other specialized gear. Then he turned to them with his request.

“Before you begin,” Rabbi Schwab said, “I must ask your forgiveness!”

The RPS members looked at the mashgiach as if he had fallen from the moon. “What for?”

“I made you stop what you were doing to rush over here. And you had to carry your heavy equipment,” Rabbi Schwab explained.

“Look,” the paramedic replied, “we aren’t volunteers like the Hatzolah members. We’re on a salaried shift. We get paid for doing this!”

“That may be true,” Rabbi Schwab persisted. “But you get paid even if you don’t have any calls. During your shift, you

may have two calls or five calls or no calls at all, and you get paid regardless. Now, because of me, you had a call to run to. And you had to schlep those heavy bags…”

The paramedics laughed. “This is our job…” But since the mashgiach insisted on a verbalized forgiveness, the members stated that they forgave him. Only then did Rabbi Schwab allow himself to be examined.

I stood there, mesmerized.

In his weakened state, Rabbi Schwab knew he required immediate medical assistance. But he did not get lost in his personal bubble of discomfort. He remained in touch with his surroundings, valuing the selflessness of the people helping him, and expressed his genuine appreciation.

As I drove away from West Maple Avenue that night, I had a new appreciation for the tzaddik living in our midst. He was an angel, dressed like a man.

A DIY sukkah decoration series

Chava Schwartz

It’s summertime, the perfect season to take on a fun and creative project. This painting project will teach you many painting skills while showing you how to create beautiful artwork for your sukkah.

Over these eight weeks, we will guide you on how to complete a beautiful, hand-painted shivas haminim sukkah decoration. Each of the shivas haminim will get a separate painting as part of this series, and the last week of instructions will be reserved for writing the names of the shivas haminim onto the completed paintings.

The paintings will be taught in a step-bystep manner so everyone can join and enjoy. You do not need to be an artist to create this masterpiece.

Happy painting!

WEEK 2

Se’orah | Barley

For the second part of this series, we will be painting se’orah, or barley. The background is an abstract version of sunrise, painted all in pastel colors, which casts a beautiful light over the barley stalks. Enjoy creating this masterpiece!

• Use baby wipes to fix mistakes while the paint is still wet.

• Keep your brushes in the water when they are not in use.

• When you finish painting, wash your brushes with soap and water.

STEP 1

Mix magenta with white to get a very light pink. Paint the top quarter of the painting. Mix yellow with white. Paint the second quarter of the canvas, moving from the pink downward, with this light yellow.

Next, clean your brush and leave it damp. Move the brush back and forth where the pink and yellow meet to blend the colors together.

Mix sage green with white to get a very light green. Paint the remainder of the canvas, from the yellow downward, with this light green.

Next, clean your brush and leave it damp. Move it back and forth where the yellow and green meet to blend the colors together.

STEP 2

Mix sage green with yellow ocher. Paint two slanted lines crossing each other like an X to create the barley stalks. One should be taller than the other.

STEP 3

Fill the medium round brush with yellow ocher and white. Starting in the middle of the taller line, place the full brush on the canvas to create a kernel shape. Add additional large kernels on the two sides of the first kernel. Continue moving upward to the tip of the stalk, layering kernels one above the other as you move along. The kernels should get smaller as they near the tip of the stalk.

Next, repeat this step on the shorter stalk.

STEP 4

Fill your brush with sage green, ochre yellow and white. Paint thin lines reaching outward starting between each of the kernels. Continue to add lines to both sides of each stalk.

STEP 5

Proudly sign your painting!

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU’VE COMPLETED THE SECOND PAINTING IN THIS SERIES. Until next time, Chava

Any exposed part of the body — including the earlobes, scalp and lips — can burn. Even covered areas can burn. The eyes, which are extremely sensitive to the sun’s UV light, also can burn.

Sunburn symptoms can include:

• Inflamed skin, which looks pink or red on white skin

• Skin that feels warm or hot to the touch

• Pain, tenderness and itching

• Swelling

• Small, fluid-filled blisters, which may break

• Headache, fever, nausea and fatigue, if the sunburn is severe

Within a few days, the body may start to heal itself by peeling the damaged skin’s top layer. A bad sunburn may take several days to heal. Any lingering changes in skin color usually go away with time.

When to see a doctor

See your healthcare provider if you:

Develop large blisters

Develop blisters on the face, hands or genitals

Experience severe swelling of the affected area

Show signs of infection, such as blisters with pus or streaks

Experience worsening pain, headache, confusion, nausea, fever or chills

Get worse despite at-home care

Have eye pain or vision changes

Seek immediate medical care if you are sunburned and experience:

• A fever over 100.0F

• Confusion

• An infection

• Dehydration

• Cold skin, dizziness or faintness

Prevention

Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The sun’s rays

you’re in the sun. Seek shade when possible.

Use sunscreen often and generously. Use water-resistant, broadspectrum lip balm and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. Broad-spectrum products offer protection against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. No sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UVB rays.

About 30 minutes before going outdoors, generously apply your sunscreen to clean, dry skin. Use at least 2 tablespoons of sunscreen, or 1 ounce, to cover all surfaces of the exposed skin, except the eyelids. If you’re using spray sunscreen, spray it into your hands and then rub it into the skin. This helps avoid inhaling the product. Don’t use a spray product while smoking or near an open flame.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all sunscreen to retain its original strength for at least three years. Check sunscreen labels for directions on storing and expiration dates. Throw away sunscreen if it’s expired or more than three years old.

Protect babies and toddlers.

Protect babies and toddlers from sunburn with brimmed hats and lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs. Keep them cool, hydrated and out of direct sunlight. When that’s not possible, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to the face and back of the hands. The American Academy of Dermatology and the FDA don’t suggest sunscreen for children under 6 months.

Things to note

• You can get sunburned on cool or cloudy days.

• While on a boat the water reflects the sunlight back onto your skin and will increase the risk of sunburn

• If you develop fluid-filled blisters do not try to break it as the open skin will increase the chance or infections.

After four weeks of saying Birchas Hashachar daily, or adding something else to your davening, participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $250 gift card at If you miss three or fewer days, you still qualify. Bonus raffle entry if you don’t miss a day! Contest ends July 15, 2023.

AMBULANCES AT WAR

Ambulances have been around for a long time, though they have greatly evolved as technology advanced. The first ambulances were military carts that were used by the Spanish army in 1487 to transport injured soldiers off the battlefields. The challenge was that due to the clunkiness of the carts, the ambulances picked up soldiers only once the battle was over, and many soldiers died on the field while waiting for help. This changed many years later, when Dominique Jean Larrey, who later became Napoleon’s chief physician, designed a new ambulance that was able to maneuver over uneven terrain, making it much easier to use on the battlefield. The design was called the “flying ambulance,” and it was equipped to provide care for the fallen soldiers until they arrived at military field hospitals. The flying ambulance was first used in 1793 by the French Revolutionary Army, and the concept was later introduced in the United States and used during the Civil War.

HORSE-DRAWN HASSLES

Although progress was being made at war, it took a while until civilian ambulances became a thing. From 1865 to 1869, the first hospital-based ambulances were introduced in Ohio and New York. The hospitals kept a fleet of ambulances ready to bring patients to the hospital, and these vehicles carried medical equipment to provide care along the way.

Since ambulances then were horse-drawn, keeping them ready to run was a bit of a hassle. At first, the horses were kept constantly harnessed and standing at the ready. Eventually, that changed. A pulley system was assembled, which dropped the harness straight onto the horses’ backs so they could be ready to roll within 30 seconds. Pretty impressive!

In 1870, the ambulance service in New York responded to 1,401 calls — a number that seems paltry next to the 17,000+ calls that Hatzolah of Boro Park responds to each year.

READING BACKWARD

Ever wonder why the word “ambulance” is printed backward on the front of every ambulance truck? This is so drivers looking in their rearview mirror will be able to read the word easily and know to quickly move out of the way.

160 www.thebpview.com 718.408.8770 The Boro Park View July 5, 2023

FROM FLYING AMBULANCES TO FLY CARS

We often see regular cars driven by Hatzolah members zipping around with lights and sirens. These cars are considered ambulances as well. Called non-transporting vehicles (since they don’t transport patients) or fly-cars, they provide on-site medical help and assess if a patient needs transport to a hospital, which requires an ambulance truck. Fly-cars make the response time to emergencies much faster, since qualified professionals are spread out throughout a city and can respond to emergencies in their area within record time. It also helps cut down on unnecessary hospitalizations, which is a big help both to patients and to overwhelmed emergency rooms.

STARS, SNAKES, AND MOSHE?

You may have noticed a strange-looking symbol, made up of a snake on a stick within a star, on ambulances, medical equipment and medical staff uniforms. This symbol, known as the Star of Life, is the global symbol for EMS (emergency medical services). Each of the star’s 6 points represents one of six EMS functions: detection, reporting, response, onscene care, care in transit, and transfer to definitive care.

As for the snake wrapped around the that’s actually based on a story in the Torah. When the Yidden were in the Midbar, they complained and asked why Hashem had brought them out of Mitzrayim and into the barren desert. Hashem then sent a plague of poisonous snakes to the Yidden, and many of them were bitten and died. The Yidden quickly did teshuvah and implored Moshe to ask Hashem to take away the snakes. Hashem instructed Moshe to form a copper snake on a pole and said that whoever gets bitten should look at the copper snake. After gazing at the snake, they would be healed and live. (Bamidbar 21:8)

WEEEOOOWW

Lights, sirens… all that is new! It’s only fairly recently that ambulances were first outfitted with sirens and electric lights. These emergency vehicles were always equipped with some kind of bell to warn pedestrians to get out of the way, but the electronic sirens that we know today were invented only in the 1960s. Sirens can usually be heard from around 80 feet away — and any driver can tell you that it’s often hard to tell which direction the sound is coming from, over the noise of traffic.

Different states have different regulations regarding the color of the strobe lights atop ambulances and other emergency vehicles. In New York, ambulances only use red, white and — the latest addition — blue lights, which add to their visibility.
