Parenting is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling roles in the world— it’s also one of the hardest.

Pesach Tikvah’s parenting groups are led by licensed mental health professionals. During your once-a-week meetings, you’ll be empowered with the tools to help your children succeed.

What drew you to your specific modality?

Miriam Pluchok, LMSW: Many people struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, and other challenges that affect their relationships. By focusing on the “here and now” (present dynamics) and not just the “there and then” (past experiences/ happenings), I can support clients in group therapy to learn more about their relationship patterns and gain awareness of their interactions. Drawing on Dr. Irvin Yalom’s group therapy model, I use the group as an opportunity to experiment with healthier relationship dynamics, which can then be applied to real-life relationships outside the group.

Rivky Weiss, LCSW: I’ve seen many parents struggle with parenting their children. Parenting difficulties are often triggered by our own emotions and attachment histories. Using an attachment-based lens has helped me and my clients recognize triggers and patterns in their parenting.

Who would benefit most from this program?

Rachel Brezel LMHC, MSeD: This group is designed for parents who are motivated, able to join group sessions consistently, and willing to engage in group discussions and experiment with new skills and techniques. This parenting workshop will be especially helpful for parents of children who struggle with anxiety, OCD, authority, peer relationship/ social issues, and anger management.

How will this program help participants improve their parenting skills?

Rivky Weiss, LCSW: How many parents have found themselves thinking: I can't believe I just said to my child the very thing my parents used to say to me! Am I just destined to repeat the same mistakes? In this parenting group, we will explore the extent to which our childhood experiences actually do shape the way we parent. Understanding more about yourself in a deeper way can help you build a more effective and enjoyable relationship with your children.

What results can participants expect?

Rachel Brezel LMHC, MSeD: Parents who are willing to engage in new skills and techniques will successfully improve their parent-child dynamic. As a parent, you can expect to build confidence and feel more secure in your parenting role.

Rivky Weiss, LCSW Rivky is an LCSW and a graduate of New York University. She specializes in psychodynamic therapy with a particular focus on trauma and attachment theory. She has trained in DBT, EMDR, Somatic therapy, and Attachment theory.

Rachel Brezel LMHC, MSeD Rachel is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, with over 15 years of experience. She is a principal in Bais Yaakov of Boro Park for over 40 years and has a dual Masters, one in Education and one in Mental Health. One of Rachel’s specialties is helping parents of children who struggle with OCD, anxiety, anger management, socialization, and more.

Dear Editor,

I enjoyed the essay “My Grandmothers’ Secret Slush Funds.” I also knew people who squirreled money away in such a manner; it seemed to be a cultural and generational thing, a phenomenon that was surely influenced by many factors during that time period.

I realize that the article was intended as a sweet reminiscence of a bygone time and the stereotypical characters of that era, presented in a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek style. However, my concern is that, presented out of context, the story seems to show approval for activities that are not in line with the Torah, such as cheating or deceit. It would be unfortunate if readers were to mistakenly read the story as condoning prohibited behaviors. Please take this into consideration for future content.

CASTING LIGHT ON CAST IRON

While it’s true that cast iron pots present kashrus issues, most people who bake sourdough use a Dutch oven, which is enamel coated and not seasoned at all. It needs no special process other than toiveling to be kosher. As an aside, the black, lightweight, speckled pots our Bubbies used for cooking are just as good for your sourdough. Just make sure your pot is roomy and high enough for your bread to expand in. At most, you might need to adjust your temperature and/or baking time slightly.

CAST IRON AND KASHRUS

(Re: Your Say, Issue 187)

I was disturbed by the information a letter writer shared regarding sourdough baking. The letter writer wrote, “Cast iron pots are… pre-seasoned with non-kosher fat” and must be “put… through the process of libun.” The letter also indicated that bread cooked in such pots is not kosher and may not be eaten.

Please be aware that the Dutch ovens we sell in-store and online are enamel coated and present no kashrus issue whatsoever. Cast iron skillets (frying pans) that are pre-seasoned can be purchased with a hechsher. We have skillets certified by the OK that do not need to be kashered.

Other pre-seasoned frying pans sold online or in department stores do need to be kashered. The procedure is lengthier than described in the letter.

THE CIDER CURE

I am the letter writer who recommended apple cider vinegar as a prevention for seasonal allergies. In response to the follow-up question:

Apple cider vinegar has many health benefits and can be taken all year long. I start taking it three months before the onset of the allergy season, and I find it to be effective. I would recommend taking one teaspoon of liquid apple cider vinegar (I use Braggs brand) once a day. For those with sensitive stomachs, It’s advisable to take it after a meal. You can also mix it with honey if the taste bothers you.

APPRECIATION IS INVALUABLE

As the school year comes to a close, I’d like to raise awareness about an important topic.

Our teachers and melamdim are there for our children every day of the year. They lovingly teach our children with enthusiasm and simcha shel mitzvah. They imbue our children with Torah ideals and yiras Shamayim, middos and yedios. Day in and day out, whether they’re in the mood or not, they’re there in the front of the classroom, encouraging and motivating close to 30 (or more) children.

It’s up to us, the parents, to acknowledge what our teachers and rebbeim do for us and our children. It doesn’t have to be a major gesture of appreciation; even a token acknowledgement of their hard work is enough. Show them that you care, you understand and you are grateful for all they’re doing.

A Perfect Land

The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh points out that this pasuk is not telling us anything new. Why the repetition?

IN THE SHTETL of Mir in Lithuania lived a Yid who was very involved in the community. He earned a respectable living as a cattle dealer and was beloved by his peers.

In those days, there was a growing yearning among the Yidden of Europe to go up to Eretz Yisroel. Living in the Holy Land became every Yid’s dream, though for most people, the astronomical costs of the trip made it highly unlikely. The trip itself was fraught with challenges, and most Yidden stayed put in Europe.

One day, the community members heard that the cattle dealer had sold his entire business and was preparing to make the move. He had been speaking of it for a long time and had shared with many of his friends that he longed to plant his feet on the holy soil of Eretz Yisroel. Everyone was very happy for him.

Several days later, the Yid packed his bags onto the wagon that would take him to the port. His neighbors and friends stood around him and his family and parted with heartfelt words of encouragement that he should be able to acclimate easily to the holy lifestyle of Eretz Yisroel. Then they said goodbye, thinking they would never see each other again.

Several months passed. One morning, there was a surprise in town. The cattle dealer had returned to Mir! “Could it be?” They asked one another. “Did he really leave Eretz Yisroel after all that effort and expense, and come back to our little shtetl?”

The cattle dealer was an instant celebrity. He was surrounded by crowds who wished to hear about the place they would only see in their hearts. “What is life like there?” they

asked. A firsthand report was a rare commodity!

That evening, between Mincha and Maariv in shul, the man stood up to tell his story. Before a large crowd, he shared his experiences. He told them about all that he had seen in the relatively short time he had been gone. He shared how he had soaked in the air of kedusha and how he had met the legendary personalities of Yerushalayim. He told of his feelings as he stood at the Makom Hamikdash and Me’aras Hamachpeilah and other mekomos hakedoshim.

Then he began to tell of the difficulties he personally experienced, starting from the dangerous journey. He spoke of how the people in the Old Yishuv lived in poverty and hunger. He described the heavy taxes the corrupt leaders levied on them and how the neighboring Arabs turned every day into an unbearable challenge.

“The people of Eretz Yisroel are accustomed to sleeping on the ground” he said, “on a bit of straw, just like animals. They eat simple, poor food that seems more suitable for animals than for people!”

Wanting to drive his point home, he concluded with a fateful sentence that changed his life forever.

“Rabbosai!” he said. “Believe me, it is better to be a sheep in Mir than to be a person in Eretz Yisroel!”

The people laughed, but soon they noticed a strange thing. The man was talking, but instead of his usual voice, they heard noises oddly similar to the sound of a sheep. First they thought it was all part of his live demonstration, but soon they realized the extent of the tragedy: Before everyone’s eyes, this man had lost his power of speech.

After describing the detailed saga of the meraglim , the pasuk states, “As for the men who Moshe sent to scout the Land, who returned and caused the entire congregation to complain… they died in a plague before Hashem” (Bamidbar 14:36–37).

The Ohr Hachaim explains:

At the end of the detailed description of the story of the meraglim, the pasuk reviews the sin and the punishment in quick succession to show us that the transgression of speaking against Eretz Yisroel is very great. Hashem is angered when one speaks against Eretz Yisroel, the Land that is the epitome of good. For this reason, the meraglim were treated to an immediate and unusual punishment.

To this day, we must be careful to only speak good of Eretz Yisroel.

On one of the Imrei Emes’ early trips to Eretz Yisroel, there was a strong heat wave. A Yid who was accompanying the Rebbe was not accustomed to such weather, and he commented, “It is very warm in Eretz Yisroel!”

The Rebbe would not allow the chassid to say something that could be construed negatively and immediately corrected him: “Surely you meant to say that in Eretz Yisroel, one can be a warm Yid!”

On a similar note, when Rav Ben Tzion Abba Shaul was recovering from his illness, he began to deliver shiurim in yeshivah again despite his extreme weakness. One winter day, one of his talmidim turned to him and said, “Kevod haRav, it is so cold! Let me close the Rebbi’s coat!”

“No,” Rav Ben Tzion replied sharply.

“Is it not cold for the Rav?” the talmid asked.

“It is very cold for me,” Rav Ben Tzion said. “But before, when you said it was very cold, you were speaking negatively of Eretz Yisroel. Should I give my haskamah to such words?!”

The very air of Eretz Yisroel is pure, holy and special — regardless of the temperature.

A chassid of Reb Mordechai Menachem of Skarnevitz who lived in Eretz Yisroel once came to visit Poland. When he went to receive a bracha from his Rebbe, the Rebbe took out a piece of paper and wrote his name and the names of his family members and several others who were in need of a yeshuah. He then folded the “kvittel” and gave it over to the surprised chassid

“Where should I place the kvittel?” the chassid asked. “Between the stones of the Kosel? In Me’aras Hamachpeilah? At the kever of the Arizal?”

“No,” the Rebbe said fervently. “I want you to read it in the ‘avira d’Eretz Yisroel’ — in the pure air of the Holy Land!”

Eretz Yisroel is a gift. Inhaling its kedusha is inhaling the bounty of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. This beloved center of the universe, about which it says, “Einei Hashem Elokecha bah m’reishis hashanah v’ad acharis hashanah” (Devarim 11:12), is perfect: full of beauty and benefits only.

May we all merit to live in Hashem’s most treasured place with the coming of Mashiach, soon in our days!

Eichenstein Challenges Kids To Read Over Summer Vacation

Aiming to harness summer vacation as an opportunity for intellectual growth, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein has issued a summer reading challenge that he hopes will turn district kids into bookworms.

Eichenstein said that he hopes the challenge will motivate kids to keep up with their reading over the summer months and help them develop a love of learning. Those responding to the challenge will be required to read at least fifteen minutes a day for forty days during the months of July and August. Kids have the option of reading on their own or with a partner, and those who complete the challenge will receive an official Excellence in Reading certificate issued by the New York State Assembly.

Completed reading logs should be submitted to Eichenstein’s office at 1310 48th Street, unit 204.

Canadian Wildfires Bring Sepia Haze and Hazardous Air to the Northeast

The yellow haze that covered the area last week was anything but golden, with a significant portion of the East Coast blanketed by a polluted mess that had air quality metrics soaring to unprecedented levels.

The smoke that obscured clouds and made blue skies nothing more than a memory for two days was caused by wildfires that have been burning in Canada for over a month. The resulting smoke was carried down from Canada into the Northeast by the wind, turning skies hazy on June 6 and bathing them in an eerie sepia hue a day later.

The Wall Street Journal reported that over 100 wildfires raging in Quebec and Ontario were responsible for the smoke and particulate matter that propelled air quality ratings into the dangerous territory last week. Calls for the public to put their N95 masks back on surfaced last week, with the elderly, small children, those with asthma and immunocompromised people all warned to stay inside to avoid the polluted air. The difficult conditions prompted other disruptions and cancellations, with some schools switching to remote learning, while area airports experienced flight delays because of poor visibility.

Perhaps the star of the show last week was AirNow.gov, a relatively obscure Environmental Protection Agency website that uses sensors in 900 cities to map air quality across the United States. The Washingtonian reported that AirNow.gov saw its traffic increase 16,000 percent from the same period last year, with people flocking to the site repeatedly to see just

how bad their air quality actually was. Ratings during the Tuesday and Wednesday smoke event registered an air quality index in the area that ranged from “very unhealthy” to “hazardous,” but by Thursday afternoon conditions had improved in many areas, with skies clearing and the sun emerging.

Meteorologists warn that the smoke could return again, with winds brining more polluted air down from Canada as the wildfires rage on. EPA Air and Radiation Office communications director John Millet said that AirNow.gov and his network are ready for repeat events, should they happen again in the future.

“People should be able to take clean air for granted,” said Millet. “We’re happy to labor in obscurity here at the Office of Air and Radiation. We really are. We don’t want the limelight; we just want clean air.”

Mandatory Composting Will Require Brooklynites To Separate Food Scraps From Trash

The days of dumping leftovers into the garbage are officially coming to an end in New York City, with a set of bills passed by the City Council requiring borough residents to separate food waste from their household trash or face monetary fines.

Titled the Zero Waste Act, the council’s initiative has a multi-pronged goal, which includes limiting the amount of trash being sent to landfills, fighting climate change and cre-

ating a more sustainable future the Big Apple. In addition to introducing mandatory residential curbside collection of organic materials, the act sets a zero-waste target for 2030, and is part of a larger effort to address the more than 11,000 tons of garbage produced daily in the five boroughs.

A plan unveiled by Mayor Eric Adams earlier this year made composting voluntary in Queens, but the council’s bill will make composting becoming mandatory in both Queens and Brooklyn by October, reported the New York Post. Residents of Staten Island and the Bronx will need to compost their food scraps by March 2024, with Manhattanites joining the effort six months later.

The program will require New Yorkers to collect food scraps and yard waste and deposit them in a curbside bin each week. Failure to do so could result in fines that start at $25 for a first offense, and rise to $100 after a third violation. City Councilman Kalman Yeger was one of just seven members to vote against the plan, reported Hamodia

“This is a perfect example of the council getting in the way of common sense,” said Yeger. “Few New Yorkers have the physical space to store trash in a way that this bill would require. Even the Sanitation Department recognizes this is a bad law, and voluntary composting is a better way to go.”

But a City Hall spokesperson had nothing but praise for the City Council bill, saying they are fulfilling the mayor’s promise to get compostable material out of local landfills.

“We’re doubling down on what works and appreciate that the City Council shares our commitment to fighting the rats and helping the planet,” said the spokesperson.

According to Gothamist, New York City will now be faced with the task of finding locations to handle the expected 8 million pounds of organic waste that will be generated daily. The lack of existing facilities is the reason why the program is being rolled out in stages, explained Jessica Tisch, the city’s sanitation commissioner.

Council majority leader Keith Powers praised the fivebill package as a major milestone in advancing the city’s climate and sustainability goals.

“As recent, devastating wildfires and historic air pollu-

tion have vividly shown us, it is crucial we act now to protect our environment and create a better, greener future for us all,” said Powers.

Community Leaders Honor NYC Mayor for Longtime Friendship and Support

Representatives of Jewish communal institutions in Boro Park, Williamsburg and Flatbush gathered in the home of Rabbi Moshe Wolfson last week to show hakaras hatov to Mayor Eric Adams for his years of commitment to the Jewish community.

VIN News reported that the mayor was presented with a plaque bearing the signatures of members of the Coalition of Orthodox Jewish Schools, which represents over 50 different institutions. The mayor made headlines in May when he spoke out publicly in support of the city’s yeshivas, saying that public schools would do well to follow in their footsteps.

Noting that he typically refrains from becoming politically involved, Rabbi Wolfson said that he made an exception in Adams’ case, describing him as “an exceptional person” with a warm and generous heart.

“I especially want to give my deep expression of gratitude for his assistance… especially in aiding our development of our most precious commodity, our dear children,” said Rabbi Wolfson. “Our children are our future, are G-d’s gift to us, and any help we receive in raising [them] to be an honor to G-d is greatly appreciated.”

Adams responded to Rabbi Wolfson’s praise and personal blessings with warm words of his own, categorizing himself as an old friend of the Jewish community.

“This is what family is, and this community understands that,” said the mayor. “It is unfortunate that those outside your community don’t understand that all you want to do is live in peace, educate your children and be able to provide for your community.”

Recap: Fraidy’s attempt at making peace with Chevi is cruelly rejected. Lani and Riva are tasked to plan a big bash for their parents’ 40th anniversary.

On top of all of Mr. Gabioff’s flaws, he also happened to be an insomniac. Which was a good thing and a bad thing.

The bad part was that he spent his nocturnal hours closely analyzing all of the business’s activity, so that when he showed up at work the next morning, he came armed with fact-based accusations.

The good part was that when he showed up at work, it wasn’t quite morning anymore. And that gave his staff a blessed reprieve.

“Any ideas what we can do for my parents’ fortieth anniversary?” Riva asked Shoshi as she went to retrieve a paper from the printer.

Shoshi looked up from her computer for a second. “More than just a party?”

“Yes, we want to do something special. More personal, know what I mean?”

Shoshi was whispering something to her screen, clearly not focusing on anniversary ideas.

The printer was out of paper. Riva passed Chaya’s desk on her way to fetch a new package from the supplies closet. “Chaya? Anniversary? Any ideas?”

“Maybe your kids should do some kind of performance,” Chaya suggested.

“Hey, maybe,” Riva said. “I mean, there aren’t that many old-enough kids in the family, but if we come up with some concept, maybe we could —”

She stopped short at the sound of the door buzzing open.

Shuli Nieder walked in, 45 minutes late. She didn’t explain her lateness, and nobody asked. Which was weird. She was their coworker, wasn’t she? Wasn’t it only normal to share that you had an appointment, you weren’t feeling well, whatever?

But Shuli didn’t do normal. She’d been working at Kleenup for several weeks already, and she had yet to join a conversation that didn’t directly relate to work. She was always crisp and professional, usually even professionally friendly, but to develop a rapport with

Instead of explaining her tardiness, she took slow steps toward her desk, her eyes fixed on the scene before her. It looked like she was mentally processing what she was seeing, which was a regular work scene, in Riva’s opinion. But in Shuli’s eyes, apparently, it looked like a team slacking off. She didn’t say a word, but Riva could hear her thoughts. Why are you guys sitting around chatting when you’re supposed to be working?

Riva’s movements slowed. She pulled the tray out of the printer tray and ripped open the new pack of paper. This made absolutely no sense. Shuli was the one who’d showed up late to work, so why did she feel like the troublemaker?

She banged the tray shut and headed back to her desk, just in time to catch her ringing cellphone.

“Hello?”

“Hi, this is Mrs. Hilman, the secretary at Bnos Rivka.”

“Yes?”

Instinctively, Riva threw a glance at Shuli. Personal calls at work, another transgression in Her Managership’s eyes?

“So I’m calling about your daughter Fraidy,” Mrs. Hilman went on. “Uh, she’s okay. I just wanted to tell you that she was found crying in the bathroom before. Mrs. Kviat is talking to her now, but she asked me to call you to let you know. We don’t really know what happened.”

“Yes. Of course. Thanks. For calling, I mean.”

Riva planted her fingers in her sheitel. She’d known. She’d known something was wrong. A wave of guilt tumbled over her, because she’d known, and she hadn’t done anything. Fraidy had been acting strange for a while, so why hadn’t she gotten to the bottom of it?

Mrs. Hilman was still on the phone, but she wasn’t talking. Riva looked at

her screen, the list of things she had to address loading through the hard drive of her brain.

She pictured Fraidy in the school bathroom, leaning her face on the door and sobbing quietly. Riva’s chest felt tight.

“I’m coming,” she said into the phone.

A minute later, she put on her coat, slung her bag over her shoulder and called out quietly, “I need to leave. I’ll be back later.”

Shuli jangled the bracelet on her wrist. “Would you like me to tell Mr.

Gabioff where you’re going?” she asked.

Would she like what ?

Riva tugged the bottom of her jacket and stared Shuli in the face. “No,” she said coldly. “I don’t need you to tell him anything.”

But it turned out that Shuli wouldn’t need to report to Mr. Gabioff. If she thought she could forget about her boss and his trusty new manager and go where she belonged at the moment — at her daughter’s side — she wasn’t that lucky. When she pulled open the door to leave, she came face to face with Mr. Gabioff himself.

Riva caught Mrs. Kviat’s gaze.

“I’ll go get your coat and briefcase, sweetie,” the principal said. “You wait here with your mother.”

When she left, Riva stroked Fraidy’s back. “Do you want to tell me what happened, Fray?”

Fraidy looked at Riva tentatively, and a chill crept over Riva as she met her daughter’s eyes. Her eyes were huge and hollow.

She’s terrified.

Whatever happened, whether Fraidy was sad or angry or hurt, there was something more going on, something larger lurking in her daughter’s heart.

“Not now,” Fraidy said quietly.

Riva let it go. She’d take her home, give her space, then try to figure out what was going on. For a moment, she remembered Mr. Gabioff, her job, Shuli Nieder. But she pushed the thoughts away. Too bad. She wasn’t returning to the office that day. Let them think whatever they wanted to think.

They didn’t talk much as they walked home together. Riva kept throwing glances at Fraidy, biting back her questions.

Something — someone — was hurting her daughter. And the knowledge made Riva sick.

As Mortgage Advisors, our job is to help people who can afford to take on a mortgage get a loan that fits their budget and situation. One of the main concerns that we always answer first is whether or not the loan will work for the buyers in the long term.

The guidelines for residential mortgages are very restrictive. Many of them were put in place after the meltdown of 2008, when people were getting into loans that they could not afford to pay off. The thousands of defaults triggered, in part, a financial crisis that reverberates to this day. Nowadays, to secure a residential loan, the applicant must show that they have enough income to be able to pay off the loan in whatever number of years (generally 15 or 30) the loan is written for. That’s reasonably straightforward when the buyer works for a regular salary and most or all of their income is on a W-2 form.

But in many cases, the loan applicant has income from other sources. They could be freelancers or small business owners. They could be deriving income from dividends or investments, from rent rolls or other sources. So while the typical process for a conventional loan requires a job history of two or more years with a current job in place, or a self-employed history of more than two years and income that’s at least double the debt, it’s very possible that some borrowers will be able to afford the loan without that kind of history in place.

One of our clients reported a seven-digit loss on his tax return. That alone could have disqualified him, but we were confident he could afford the loan, and much more. While he had in fact lost money, the value of his investment had grown much more than the loss. We were able to get him qualified for a loan even though he did not fill the normal requirements of job history — because it was a loan that he could easily afford to repay. Eventually, he purchased a few more properties for his children. We provided financing for each of them.

In another case, a borrower started the process with his local bank. The bank had offered credit for the closing costs and a very attractive rate. But when the bank discovered an issue with his income, they disqualified him. The borrower was about to lose his deposit and, of course, the house he wanted to buy. We started from scratch and found ways to structure the loan so that he would qualify. He was able to close a few weeks later.

In both of these cases, we were able to fund the loans while staying within the restrictions for residential lending. As it turns out, even with the most stringent governmental restrictions, there are ways to structure a loan that still fit the requirements if the borrower truly has the resources to afford the loan. Nevertheless, while we’re proud to be able to help deserving people build generational wealth by buying real estate, we’re just as proud to be able to say “no” when the loan will be too much for them.

½ cup confectioners’ sugar

2 cups whole milk

2. In a large container, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Add the coffee mixture and shake well.

Could there be a more opportune time to work on this feature than the early morning, with just a hint of eager sunshine warming the room? My computer screen is dappled with the hope of dawn.

When creativity flows,

When the mind is well-rested, When all we can hear is the chirping of birds. The poetic ring of it all!

Turns out, there can be a more opportune time. Like, right now: After the sun has risen and dappled the world with sunshine. After its fat rays sat in the middle of the sky and warmed the world. And dipped west and sank in a splendorous display of colors.

After the moon peeked out and the stars followed. Now.

Because, hey, night. Great time to work. The kids are sleeping. The house is clean. So, I sit down. Write some words. Delete them. And go to sleep.

Because tomorrow is the morning. But surprisingly, there are individuals out there who have conquered their yetzer hara and wouldn’t give up their mornings, not even for something as mundane as sleep.

CHUMY*

“You know that feeling of waking up with the birds?” Chumy asks casually.

No. I don’t. Unless you count when I was a newborn myself.

She continues, with the vibrancy of a woman who woke up three hours after I went off to bed, “It’s the greatest feeling ever! The world is so quiet, and I can fill the time however I like. Generally, I’m off the elliptical by 5:30 after having exercised for almost an hour — minus the expenses of childcare and transportation.”

Chumy’s alarm clock rings at 4:30. She enjoys a quiet coffee, two miles on the elliptical, and a luxurious davening before starting on housework. “You can’t put a price tag on a morning,” she says.

I don’t even have to try it to know it works. On those rare occasions when I wake up only ten minutes before the kids, I accomplish more in those precious moments than I do in a hundred minutes with kids around.

A side benefit of waking up before the sun is that the weather doesn’t determine your mood. “It’s never cloudy when I wake up,” Chumy explains. “The world always looks the same at 4:30.” There’s lots of welcoming silence and darkness. Two hours later, when the storm clouds brew and the dreary drizzle starts, Chumie is long past mood changes.

“And whenever I dropped my early morning routine and told myself that I’ll just daven later, exercise later, the ‘later’ never happened.”

We can all relate to that. Once the first set of feet pad out of bed, the day is over. And once you have a child over the age of eight, your night is kind of gone, too.

Which leaves us with early morning.

Chumy is in bed by 10 p.m. the latest, she says, so she gets her six to seven hours of sleep at night. And research is on her side. There’s significant proof that earlier night sleep is directly linked to better sleep, less insomnia and a longer lifespan.

I ask her about the challenges of her schedule.

The biggest challenge for her is simchos. “That really tests my resolve. By the time I come home from a wedding or vort, it’s almost morning for me. But I still push myself to wake up early on those days because I know that consistency is key.”

She’s truly a role model for “early to bed, early to rise, makes one healthy [the exercise], wealthy [I’m not that nosy] and wise [certainly].”

Then we have another class of dedicated early morning risers: our bus drivers, who are up at the crack of dawn to transport our boys to yeshivah and cheder

After speaking to Reb Dovid Virdin, fondly known as Reb

“YOU KNOW THAT FEELING OF WAKING UP WITH THE BIRDS?” CHUMY ASKS CASUALLY. NO. I DON’T.

Duvid, I know his charges are not only fortunate to ride his bus; they’re truly in the presence of greatness. He is the legendary bus driver for both the Satmar Kinyan Torah yeshivah and for Bais Rochel girls’ school in Monsey.

In the winter, his alarm clock rings at 4:30. I ask him why it’s necessary to wake up so early if his first route doesn’t start until 5:45 a.m.

“It’s not easy for a bachur to wake up early. The least I can do is have a warm bus in the winter cold. That takes an extra half hour.”

The warmth he gives his boys isn’t only a heated bus. His heart is what makes the toughest of them gravitate to him. He still gets regards from countless parents who vouch that if not for him, their sons wouldn’t have succeeded. Many years after the fact, one father still attributes his son’s commitment to Yiddishkeit to the early morning talks with his bus driver.

Reb Duvid has the right personality, and he’s enough of an outsider for the boys to consider him

DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS, THE BOYS ARE MORE OPEN, THEIR GUARD IS DOWN

on their side. He has no official title such as mashgiach, therapist or rebbi. Yet he has the passion and the joy of a true mechanech. In addition, during the early morning hours, the boys are more open, their guard is down, and Reb Duvid is there for them with his trademark patience.

“You can’t drive a bus for parnassah only. It’s a recipe for burnout. I drive because I love driving, and I love the passengers.”

He’s not exaggerating. Only a driver who loves his job can attest that in all his years, he never started his route a minute late… except once.

The only time he started his route a minute and a half late was moments after his wife gave birth to a baby girl. He looked at his watch and saw that he could still make his route! He peeked at the baby, wished his wife mazel tov, and raced off to his taiyere yeshivah bachurim. Could there be a better way to thank Hashem than by transporting His children to davening ?

I ask him to list any challenges of the job. He thinks and chuckles. “There are no challenges.” I wait for him to dredge up something

“Unless you count snow dates. I have no hotline with which to check in. I’m literally the first bus on

the road. It’s hard for me to make the call regarding whether to cancel school or not.”

He elaborates, “It’s scary to maneuver a bus in the snow, and we don’t want to take risks. On the other hand, sometimes the snow clears up by morning, and by canceling, a whole day of learning is lost.

“It’s a hard call to make,” he repeats.

RABBI FREULICH*

I pull a package of chicken cutlets from my freezer and plunk it into a bowl of water for a quick thaw. Then I call Rabbi Freulich, a shochet at a well-known meat and poultry plant. When I’m done, I go back to my package of cutlets with much more appreciation. It’s no simple matter to bring kosher chicken to my counter.

What’s the schedule like for a shochet ?

Rabbi Freulich has to be ready and alert for his 4:00 a.m. shift. His alarm goes off at 3:18 a.m. It’s the exact amount of time he needs to go to the mikveh and have his chalef inspected. While the world is asleep, the squawking of thousands of birds keeps the poultry plant alive and awake and pulsing with energy.

The shochtim work in shifts of about an hour and fifteen minutes throughout the day to ensure they are rested for this high-stakes job.

The first break after the early morning shift comes at about 5:15 a.m. In the summer months, it’s time for davening and breakfast. In the winter months, it’s still too early for davening, so Rabbi Freulich has time for a quick nap before davening at neitz.

How does Rabbi Freulich deal with a schedule that is so

different from that of the rest of humanity?

The schedule is definitely a challenge for a person who once considered himself a die-hard night owl. But as he says, “I chose the job, not the schedule. It’s avodas hakodesh to provide Klal Yisroel with kosher chicken.”

He explains that his body’s circadian rhythm got used to the new schedule, and he has no problem switching between a weekend and workweek schedule.

Having an adequate night’s sleep is crucial for the job. Therefore, he takes the responsibility very seriously and turns in for the night right after Maariv. In the summer, that’s a bit late, and therefore more of a challenge. In the winter, the schedule is a bit easier.

“It’s all avodas hakodesh,” Rabbi Freulich says again. It’s also what he tells his kids when they complain about the schedule. And that attitude is what transforms the challenge into a privilege.

These interviewees all lead very different lives, but they have something important in common. They don’t view the early wakeup as a punishment; they view it as a privilege. It reminds me of the age-old words that called the townspeople to Selichos: Shteit oif, shteit oif, tzu avodas haBorei.

It’s another day. Another world of opportunity beckons. Another to-do list waits to be checked off. I roll up my sleeves and trip right into routine.

After sending off the big kids, I look for Dovi’s missing shoe and comb through Mindy’s hair. I whip up eggs, pack some snacks, and kiss the little ones off to school.

I stir my mug of coffee and settle into a chair. Whew! Another whirlwind of a morning has passed…

My thoughts take me to Chevy’s upcoming test and the politics in Moishy’s class. We need so much siyata d’Shmaya! Then I mentally review the chores I hope to accomplish this morning before heading off to work.

I stretch, ready to jump out of my seat. Time is ticking.

But wait!

How can I possibly begin before taking a moment to turn upward and inward and thank Hashem for everything He has given me? My faculties, my abilities, the very fact that I’m here right now…

I open my siddur with the heartfelt plea that I always remember that everything I have is thanks to Him.

Speaking with my friend one afternoon, I shared that someone close to me was in need of a particular yeshuah

“I wish I could do something to help,” I said. “Perhaps a kabbalah or something small.”

We brainstormed together a bit, and when my friend mentioned Birchas Hashachar, I knew she’d nailed it. I couldn’t help but think of how my mornings looked. Some days, at around noon, I’d ask myself, “Did I daven brachos yet?” Somehow, in the frenzy of life, I’d fallen into the habit of grabbing my siddur, mumbling the words, and moving on. Minutes later, I hardly remembered if I’d actually davened

The thought of infusing life into these poignant words excited me, but I had no idea where to start. My friend suggested that we create a tangible benchmark. We would not eat before davening brachos

For the next 40 days, I was ever so careful with my new kabbalah. As the weeks wore on, it simply became part of life. And although the yeshuah has still not appeared on the horizon, I appreciate the inspiration and direction my deeper connection to davening infuses in my days.

I don’t have time. I don’t have an appetite. I don’t need to eat in the morning.

I wrote this intro last, because I don’t have time to write intros. I barely have time to do the regular things like supper, laundry and carpool. Obviously, I don’t have time to eat breakfast. That’s why it’s called a breakfast challenge. It’s definitely going to be challenging.

Day 1

RATE: 3 — I ate something, but…

WORD: chaotic

I got up with the baby at 5:45 a.m. Even after throwing in a load of laundry and putting the pepper steak in the CrockPot, by 6:15 I was drinking my coffee. I knew it didn’t count as breakfast; I was going to eat later. But first I had to wake up the other six kids and get them dressed/find their socks/ sign their homework/settle a fight over the last protein bar.

I got the boys out the door by 8:17, the girls out by 8:26, and the toddler and baby out by 9:10. I was starving at this point, but I knew that today was the day I was going to eat breakfast. Properly. Meanwhile, I grabbed an apple. Then I had to drive the kid who missed her bus to school, which took until 10:45, including a stop at the grocery store to buy some more protein bars. And yogurt and bread and cereal and all the other things I remembered once I was there.

I got home with only minutes to spare before a work call. I’d been up for 5 hours already and hadn’t stopped moving for an instant. What could I eat in two minutes? I grabbed some Rice Krispies and poured myself a bowl of cereal, ignoring the increasingly hysterical emails from my assistant. I finished the bowl, but I was still hungry. Too bad, no time. Anyway, it was almost time for lunch.

And this is why I never eat breakfast.

Day 2

RATE: 7

WORD: disappointing

This morning looked basically like yesterday morning except for two major differences: I overslept by half an hour and didn’t get up until 6:30, and my daughter didn’t miss her bus.

So that means that I did all the same things I did yesterday, just in less time.

But! At nine-zero-zero, I was done. I did it! Most of the kids were out, I just had to drive the little ones to playgroup, and they were already packed, dressed and ready. Even I was dressed and ready to go! At this point I had an entire ten minutes until I needed to walk out the door. I knew I could eat breakfast in ten minutes. (Yesterday I ate breakfast in one minute.)

I felt amazing.

I walked over to the fridge and opened it. This is what I saw: six bottles of milk, a five-pound bag of lettuce, two containers of cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, high-protein yogurt, hummus, guacamole, chrein, mayonnaise, leftover pepper steak, raw chicken cutlets, two lonely pieces of fourday-old potato kugel, three dozen eggs and a container of tuna.

I stared into the fridge for a minute. What was I supposed to eat? I don’t like tuna, I didn’t have time to make and eat a salad, and I didn’t have time to make eggs. I buy those special yogurts for my son, and it was too early in the day to become fleishig

The clock was ticking loudly behind me.

Finally, I took the baby carrots and guacamole and sat down at the kitchen table.

This is the other reason I never eat breakfast.

Day 3

RATE: 1 — because popcorn doesn’t count

WORD: enlightening

I made fresh popcorn for my kids to take to school this morning. I’m so amazing, I know.

But as I was standing in the kitchen babysitting the popping kernels, I started paying attention to what everyone around me was eating for breakfast.

The twelve-year-old had yogurt. The ten-year-old had coffee. The eight-year-old had hot cocoa. The five-year-old had

hot cocoa. The three-year-old had yogurt. The baby had a bottle of milk and a double chocolate chip cookie that I had made last night for Shabbos.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one around with poor breakfast habits. My supermom-who-makes-fresh-popcorn feeling dissolved into a sense of failure. I mean, everyone knows how important breakfast is. What kind of mother was I, anyway?

The saving grace was my fifteen-year-old, who made himself two omelets with cheese, folded them carefully into two rolls, and washed and bentched

WORD: astonishing

Last night, before I went to sleep, I remembered that I’d left some groceries in the car. I schlepped outside to get them; it was two boxes of cereal. I was too tired to be organized, so I just stepped into the kitchen and left them on the first patch of counter on my way up to bed.

This morning, when the kids came downstairs, they encountered the cereal, sitting there so conveniently, on their way to the snack bags. Before I knew what was happening, all the hot-drinks-for-breakfast-ers were sitting docilely, eating cereal and milk like they do this every day.

I ate some too.

I’m giving this day a 9. We all ate, even if it wasn’t particularly nourishing. And it was astonishingly easy and pleasant.

Day 5

RATE: Who knows?

WORD: delicious

Okay, I have to be honest: Shabbos was kind of a day off from this challenge. My kids ate Fruit Loops (horrors) and kokosh cake (homemade!) for breakfast, and I had a coffee… and then some double chocolate chip cookies… and then some kokosh cake…

WORD: finally

Today was Sunday, and I finally, finally did it properly: When the boys had left and the babies were busy, I made myself a vegetable quesadilla. Now that’s breakfast.

I’ve been thinking about buying some patio furniture for my deck, but I have this thing about spending money. I feel like every purchase has to be totally one million percent justified beyond any doubt. Like it needs to fall into the category of “this will seriously change my entire life, and therefore it’s worth the money.” But are we going to actually sit on the deck if we buy a patio set? Or is it going to be like my fleishig Betty Crocker? I was so pumped about it, but I never use it.

It was such a gorgeous spring morning. As I stood there with my quesadilla and cappuccino, I looked out the glass sliding doors to the deck, wishing I could go out and eat there.

If I had deck furniture, I would for sure eat breakfast every morning.

Day 7

RATE: 10

WORD: satisfying

So this was the day I was going to pull it all together.

I learned a lot from this challenge. I learned that in order for breakfast to happen for myself and my family, I need to know in advance what will be served and have it ready and accessible. Today was going to be the day when I would write: I woke up at 5 a.m. and cooked a delicious and nutritious breakfast for my beautiful family. They all came downstairs dressed and ready

for school, and we sat together around the table, enjoying each other’s company while eating fresh waffles, fruit smoothies, and nibbling from a vegetable platter. My kids’ and my own entire frame of mind was better all day long, and the healthy start to my day kept me charged for hours. I will definitely continue this forever!

But to be honest, today looked pretty much like Day 1. Everyone ate their cereal/yogurt/hot cocoa, and my daughter missed her bus again.

Postscript

So was it all a flop?

I’ll tell you what did change: my awareness. I paid more attention to what was happening around me each morning. I noticed what I was doing, and what my kids were doing. And I noticed what I could do to make things different. Maybe I wasn’t so successful at implementing everything I learned. (Maybe I need that patio set after all.) But I learned the recipe for success — in any area: Pay attention to what’s really happening. Prepare in advance so you can do what you need to do in the moment. Model the behavior you want in others. Make things pleasant so they’re more likely to happen.

None of this is news. But it’s different when you experience it. I gave today a 10. I think I learned enough that I can consider this challenge a success.

When a good friend, who happens to be an editor at The Boro Park View, asked me if I eat breakfast every morning, I thought she wanted to have a friendly conversation about my wellbeing. When she followed up by saying that she’s organizing a breakfast challenge, I thought she wanted to schmooze about her life and wellbeing. Turns out, it was all work-related. Where does that leave us?

But whatever her true motive, I’ve been meaning to eat more mindfully. Working from home has many benefits, but mindful eating isn’t one of them.

I tend to be a grazer. I eat small meals and lots of little pick-me-up meals during the day. Many of them are healthy; I love fruits and veggies. But many are less so. I graze when I prepare the kids snacks, when I clean up from supper, and any time in between. Could starting my day with an actual breakfast give me the power boost I need to eat more mindfully throughout the rest of my day?

Day 1

RATE: 10

WORD: heroic

Day 1 of my challenge coincided with a pre-scheduled root canal for a rather grumbly twelve-year-old boy, and a surprise visit to a plastic surgeon with my toddler. With a burst of decisiveness and energy, I decide not to push off the challenge but to begin breakfasting today anyway — as soon as I finish getting the kids out to school, setting up the plastic surgery appointment, and rescheduling my husband’s meetings so he can manage Team Root Canal while I manage Team Plastic Surgery. So while it wasn’t an acai power bowl, or avocado toast with feta and freshly squeezed juice, taking out a frying pan to scramble eggs in the very short window left for me to actually work at my paying job was nothing less than heroic. I totally get a 10.

Bonus points: My cleaning lady canceled. If this is a contest, I must be winning.

Day 2

RATE: 10 — woo-hoo!

WORD: delicious

Today was a great morning. I got an early night (I deserved it after yesterday’s drama), and the morning rush was fairly smooth, even though the baby undid her bandage and we needed to run to buy more wound care supplies and then redo the bandage, which was obviously a two-person job.

But while there was thankfully no new drama, yesterday’s to-do list didn’t simply disappear because of the drama, so today’s list is even longer. I once again felt boastfully heroic for eating breakfast.

My five-year-old eats Patis sourdough bread like it’s popcorn, so I figured I’m entitled to a piece of high-end ex-

pensive bread, too. Toasted with olive oil and zaatar – delicious. I guess his five-year-old taste buds are onto something good.

Bonus points: I remembered to bentch!

Day 3

WORD: expensive!

My pantry is still in the last stages of post-Pesach replenishment. (If I were the type to have fully replenished and organized a week after Yom Tov, I would have been eating breakfast well before this challenge.) But since nobody can take peanut butter to school, and I specifically prefer one specific brand, peanut butter was still out of stock in my house until this week. But I’m so committed to this challenge that I was off to the grocery in the evening of Day 2 to be ready for breakfast on Day 3. Not one to waste an opportunity, my bar mitzvah bochur was invited along for some special time.

In addition to being delicious and natural, peanut butter is also very well priced. Sixty-odd dollars later, I was the proud owner of one jar of natural smooth peanut butter (and other sundry essentials like salmon jerky, jalapeno puffs and hot pepper banana rings). With rice cakes and chocolate chips, it tasted more like a snack.

Bonus points – I didn’t nosh on anything as I prepared the kids’ breakfasts, lunches, and snacks while I patiently (not!) waited for a quiet house and my own breakfast.

Double bonus: special time with my son!

Day 4

RATE: 10

WORD: late

Today I had to make a grocery run straight from carpool, so breakfast wasn’t until 10 — but Princess woke up for the day at 6:18, so that was a lot of waiting. Unlike yesterday, I nibbled, but only on a guava and a bite of watermelon. Breakfast turned out to be scrambled eggs with chorizo flavored breakfast crumbles; I’m upping the ante. Consensus: totally worth the wait!

Bonus points: second cooked-in-a-pot breakfast this week!

Day 5

RATE: 8

WORD: Friday!

Fridays are always hectic, and today’s list included

everything from baking challah to a follow-up visit for Team Plastic Surgery. Oh, and time for my regular paying job somewhere in between. Without the ten extra seconds to think about it, I copied yesterday’s success, but with one egg instead of two. I really don’t do my best work when I’m after a heavy meal, and yesterday’s meal left me feeling a bit fuller than usual. It was delicious again, but really just a blip that barely registered in my racing mind.

Bonus points: Friday! Need I say more?

Day 6

RATE: 0

WORD: vacation

I guess this breakfast thing is not yet life-changing since I viewed Shabbos as a vacation from breakfast. Honestly, Shabbos has such a different pace that I just forgot. Dessert this week was sorbet, so there were no cookies or cake

around, which surely would have done the trick. My boys don’t eat before shul anymore, and two of the little ones had piping hot cholent. By the time I remembered that I needed a real breakfast, I was deep in seudah prep and just not in the mood.

Day 7

WORD: relief

I was excited that today was the last day of the challenge, but between rushing to get my high school daughter to and from an event and still managing to be on time for my son’s siddur play, breakfast was a quick rice cake with peanut butter — sans the chocolate chips. Filling, balanced and yummy — check!

Bonus points: I’m done!

I’m glad I joined this contest. I learned that I actually do like grazing throughout the day, and that I don’t like feeling very full first thing in the morning. While I did enjoy the structure — I started each day by eating and davening right when I got back from carpool — I didn’t enjoy the feeling of being regimented.

I’m very happy most mornings to eat some fruit and a cookie when I want to and without thinking about it. I get that this might be different for those who don’t work from home or have more time on their hands, but this works for me, and there is no space in my life to stress about it. Clearly, my mental energy is needed in other places.

Nevertheless, I would like to eat more mindfully in general — for health, better brachos before and after, and for middos improvement. And while my younger kids don’t know the difference, I did feel virtuous setting an example for my teenager who saw me make time for breakfast on Sunday. This challenge showed me that I can manage a proper breakfast, and I might even do it more often.

The most consistent thing about my mornings is that I am always running late.

I have three kids between the ages of eighteen months and nine years, and my kids’ schools do not provide lunch (not that my kids would, Heaven forbid, actually eat a school’s lunch). So that means that this harried mother spends her mornings cutting up fruit, cooking up pasta, preparing pizza bagels and throwing snack bags into everyone else’s backpacks, all while pressing granola bars into kids’ hands and shepherding them out the door. (Sadly, my poor breakfast habits are being passed on to my kids.)

I never eat anything before I leave for work, but I do take a coffee with me. I drink it in the car (my commute is the most relaxing fifteen minutes of my day), and that’s generally my breakfast. When I get hungry, I eat the granola bar I threw into my bag when I handed them out to the kids.

So, here I go. Seven days of eating an actual breakfast before I leave the house. Maybe this will magically transform me. Probably into an even more harried mother, but maybe, just maybe, into a more energetic, productive and happy one.

While I was at the grocery store yesterday for some dinner essentials, I decided to get some things for my all-time favorite breakfast: yogurt, granola and coffee. I bought a few of my favorite yogurts and a bag of healthy-ish granola. (Nobody said I had to eat a healthy breakfast, but I figured that once I’m doing this, I may as well try to do it all the way.)

As it turned out, I was so excited about my yogurt-and-granola combo that I didn’t eat the schnitzel I made for dinner last night, and had my breakfast for dinner instead!

Anyway, my morning was its usual hectic whirlwind, but I knew in the back of my frazzled mind that I’d somehow have to make the time to sit down and eat. At first, the thought of eating made me turn my nose; I was really not hungry. Plus, my whole plan was to have the yogurt with my coffee, but that presented two problems: First of all, drinking a coffee requires a lot more time, and second of all, I would sorely miss my coffee on my commute to work. Hmph

In the end, I made my coffee right before I left the house, sat down to eat, and saved most of the coffee for the car. At that point, I had been thinking about breakfast for long enough that I actually worked up an appetite. But it was very rushed, and I felt silly for sitting down to eat when I should have been on my way to work.

When I got to work, I went about my morning as usual and noticed that I wasn’t hungry for the usual granola bar break at 11 o’clock. In fact, I got all the way to lunch time without feeling hungry. So… a healthier breakfast that tided me over until lunch. I guess that’s a win!

Day 2

RATE: 2

WORD: whoops!

Today was a repeat of yesterday, except that I was late for work, even by my own always-late standards. (This time it was because of circumstances beyond my control; I promise.) So instead of sitting down to eat my breakfast (today I actually added some fresh cut up fruit! What a treat!), I took the whole concoction into the car with me. I carried my work bag over my shoulder, my coffee in one hand, balanced the open yogurt on top of the coffee lid, and held a plastic cup of granola in my other hand. Don’t worry; I made it all the way to the safety of the driver’s seat before I spilled my coffee all over the interior of my car.

Results of today’s experiment were a valuable lesson learned: Thou shalt not eat a yogurt whilst operating heavy machinery such as a motor vehicle. Suffice it to say, my knees did most of the driving, and the cars in the lanes next to me were very gracious in the amount of space they provided. I will not be doing this again.

Day 3:

WORD: pampered

I’ve given up on a sitting down kind of breakfast. This morning I knew I needed something I could safely and neatly

eat in the car, so I made myself a smoothie. Simple recipe: frozen strawberries, a banana, milk and frozen spinach. Plus a healthy serving of toddler-screaming-into-my-ears-in-terror from the horrors of hearing these innocent ingredients ground to a pulp.

I poured the whole thing into a 16-ounce Solo cup with a lid and a straw and felt like I was holding a $10 drink. My toddler soon got over the trauma of watching me mutilate fruit and even enjoyed some of it as well. Then I made my coffee in a leakproof Contigo travel mug and threw it into my bag. See how smart I’m getting?

My smoothie was delicious. Since I’m the kind of person who always has things happen to her, my straw had a hole in it, so I had to work really hard to get the smoothie into my mouth. But I didn’t let that stop me! I drank the whole thing and enjoyed every hard-earned sip.

I felt pampered and happy. Definitely going to do this again!

Day 4:

RATE: 10

WORD: peanut butter!

I was so looking forward to drinking my smoothie this morning, but had to change plans when I saw that the bananas were just a little too green. I also noticed that although my smoothie felt super filling yesterday, I was hungry about an hour later. That inspired me to look for something with protein in it.

Yogurt was out because of the Hazards Associated With Eating It Whilst Operating Heavy Machinery. I was not about to make an omelet because, time and mess. I racked my frazzled brain and the pantry and fridge and settled on string cheese and rice cakes. Blah. It felt kind of depressing, but I reminded myself that this is called a Breakfast Challenge for a reason.

Just as I was about to leave I had a flash of inspiration. Forget rice cakes and string cheese! It should be rice cakes and peanut butter! I slapped some PB and rice cake sandwiches together in about 30 seconds and flew out the door. Time-efficient, yummy and protein-packed... and I definitely felt full until lunch time.

Day 5

RATE: 2

WORD: blissful

Shabbos morning breakfast! Goes without saying that this one was super chilled and a far cry from my usual frenzied grab-and-go. Breakfast actually happened in multiple stages and in multiple levels of nutrition. First course was soggy shabbos cereal that my toddler so lovingly fed me. Next course was coffee! On the couch, with a magazine! Finally, my meal was completed with drips of yogurt from the side of Toddler’s yogurt pouch in support of Keep the Living Room Rug Clean.

Day 6

RATE: 10

WORD: healthy and delicious

Sunday mornings are almost as good as Shabbos mornings because my big boys go to school, and it’s just me and Toddler on our own. We made a smoothie together with all the terror and trauma that using a blender involves. It was totally worth it though, because the smoothie was so good, and because Toddler got some spinach stuck in his teeny-tiny teeth, and it was so cute.

Day 7

WORD: finally — because it all comes together

The last day! I used all of my newfound knowledge and experience to choose my breakfast this morning. All the lessons I learned showed me that rice cakes and PB were the clear winner for work mornings. These sandwiches take seconds to prepare, can be eaten safely and neatly while

driving, do not interfere with my coffee habit, and actually really keep me full until lunch. Also, it’s pretty solidly in the healthy department.

I went into this wondering if and how it would change me. And… I’m not sure it did. I mean, I guess I learned what type of breakfasts I can more easily swing, but it essentially just replaced my 11 a.m. granola bar habit with a healthier, earlier option. The trade-off was a slight increase in my morning rush. I guess I could see this becoming easier with time if I’d have kept it up a few more days. Maybe a ten-day challenge would have been enough to get me to make a more permanent change. Oh, well, what a shame.

Postscript

Okay, so strangest thing ever. It’s been an entire week since I finished the Breakfast Challenge, and… I’m still doing it. Weirdly, I feel compelled to eat breakfast in the car every morning. And at this point, I have it all figured out, and it doesn’t stress me out or make me late(r) to work.

I think I do feel better during the day, though I can’t exactly put my finger on it. All I know is that this morning I didn’t bring any breakfast with me, and I really, really, missed it. Like, the same way I’d miss my lunch if I left it at home. So clearly, it had some kind of effect on me, and I’m sure I’m not worse off because of it. It’s also cool to see how long it takes to go from zero to a new habit. Seven days is not that long in the scheme of things.

Hmmm… Maybe we should do a seven-day On Time To Work Challenge next.

Much prose has been written about the peaceful hours of dawn, when the Master of Creation wakes His slumbering world with an explosion of color. And while most of humanity sleeps through this magnificent display morning after morning, there are some adventurous beach-goers who make it their business (or pleasure!) to visit this prime sunrise viewing spot. These are the families who set out deep in the middle of the night, way before dawn breaks, pack a lovely breakfast, and bask in the sun’s beauty as it makes a beautiful display on the oceanfront.

If you are one of those individuals who’d love nothing more than to cherish those morning moments of awe, perhaps it’s time to get acquainted with breathtaking Fire Island, a narrow strip of land where all you can see is sea and sky.

Disclaimer: Fire Island has swimming beaches and is not an appropriate destination during swimming hours. If parking will be needed, please check in advance that the parking lot will be accessible prior to official opening time.

Though the origin of this island’s name is a bit murky, this charming spot surely does fire the imagination.

Fire Island is a picturesque Atlantic Ocean barrier island located off Long Island. This unique 32-mile-long strip of land has pristine beaches, marinas and resort communities, making for a special car-free oasis to visit during non-swimming times.

The only spot on Fire Island that is accessible by car is Robert Moses State Park, which is on the island’s western tip. If you park at the far eastern end of the parking lot at Field 5 (taking a left when entering the parking lot), there’s a boardwalk that leads to the Fire Island lighthouse, which makes the sunrise experience all that more surreal.

I’ve always been fascinated by outer space, the millions of galaxies, trillions of stars and all the things that fly and burn and turn and twinkle and explode. And there’s nothing more compelling than the sun, the life force at the center.

WHAT IS THE SUN?

Twinkle, twinkle, little sun, how I wonder what you are…

We think of the sun as a huge, red, ball of fire, but the sun is in fact… a star. (I won’t blame you if you’re skeptical; you won’t be the only one.) The reason it appears so much larger than other stars is that the sun is the closest star to Earth, and the only star in our solar system. (The solar system consists of the sun and everything that is bound to it with gravity: the eight planets and assorted comets, asteroids and such.)

The sun is also the largest object in our solar system, with its diameter measuring around 865,370 miles, in contrast to Earth that has a diameter of “only” 7,917.5 miles. It would take 1.3 million Earths to fill the sun! Despite its huge size in comparison to Earth, the sun is only an average-sized star; there are stars that are more than 700 times larger. (Think of how large that makes the universe, which holds endless galaxies of millions of stars.)

What all this means is that technically “the sun” is just a cute little name we gave to the star closest to Earth. Or to really give you a brain itch, it also means that the stars in our galaxies are just a bunch of suns. Go ahead, give your head a good scratch.

WHAT MAKES THE SUN (AND ALL THE STARS) SHINE?

The sun is made of gas, mostly hydrogen and helium. At the sun’s core, a process called nuclear fusion is happening, which is when lighter elements (the hydrogen, in this case) in pressurized environments are forced together to create a heavier element. This process creates an enormous amount of energy, which gets sent into space as visible light, UV rays, heat and radio waves.

But due to the immense distance from the sun to Earth, we don’t see the sun’s light right away. The light from the sun’s horizon takes around 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach Earth’s horizon. The sunlight that we’re getting here is already 8 minutes old!

(NOT) STAR SHAPED

Unlike what you learned in kindergarten, stars aren’t actually star-shaped. Stars, and in turn the sun, just like all the planets, are spherical. They all have a very strong gravitational force at their center that pulls all layers and elements inward to its core, thereby creating a round shape. Unlike Earth, the sun is made of gas and doesn’t have a solid surface, so it’s more like a hazy, swirling, ball.

GOING ROUND ‘N ROUND

The sun makes a full rotation every 24 days, but the entire sun doesn’t spin at the same speed. The gases on its surface rotate at different speeds, so while the equator of the sun makes a full rotation in 24 days, closer to its north and south poles it takes around 35 days.

UV RAYS: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE BEAUTIFUL

We get many benefits from the sun, like Vitamin D (and freckles!), but the sun’s ultraviolet light can cause sunburn and skin cancer if one is exposed for too long, so be sure to apply that sunscreen. On the flip side, UV light also has antiseptic properties and is used in hospitals to disinfect equipment. UV light isn’t distributed evenly across Earth, which is why populations in some countries have darker skin than in others.

HOW HOT IS THE SUN?

At its core, the sun is 27 million degrees Fahrenheit. As the heat spreads and reaches the surface, it goes down to 10,783 degrees Fahrenheit. In the sun’s outside atmosphere, the temperature begins to rise again to roughly 3,600,032 degrees Fahrenheit. You would expect the temperature to drop as it gets further from the sun, but the opposite happens. This increase in temperature is one of the sun’s biggest mysteries.

HOW FAR FROM EARTH IS THE SUN?

The sun is about 93 million miles away from Earth, as compared to the next nearest star, the Proxima Centauri, which is 25,300,000,000,000 (yup that’s trillion) miles away.
