Here’s an easy way to create a smashable cake with just a metal bowl, no mess and no expensive equipment: Place a metal bowl in the freezer. Meanwhile, melt chocolate (in a plastic bag with hot water, so nothing gets dirty during this process). Remove the bowl from the freezer, and pour chocolate downward in a circular motion until you have a thin layer covering the entire bowl. Freeze and repeat with more chocolate to create a thicker, stronger layer. Remove the chocolate shell from the bowl by placing some hot water into a slightly larger metal bowl and immersing the smaller bowl inside it so the chocolate pops out. Fill the mold with nosh, and behold! You now have a chocolate smash cake for any occasion!

To the writer whose son was injured by a boy on a scooter:

First, my sincere wishes for your son’s complete refuah. I hope he suffers no ill effects from his recent injury.

In no way do I mean to diminish your or your child’s trauma, but I feel compelled to make several points: Do you really believe that his injury was caused by “the young boy on electric wheels,” or because he was startled and happened to be sitting near a fire hydrant? Couldn’t the same thing have happened if your son was spooked by an animal, a loud sound or a sudden downpour? Your son was on the grass near the fire hydrant. But you did not mention if the “boy on electric wheels” bypassed the street and aimed his route towards the grass. If he was on the sidewalk, then he can be considered a menace. But I am not awareof a scooter speed limit on a public street.

Many parents have purchased big wheels, two-wheelers, Segways, oversized three-wheelers, cars, the rare unicycle, pogo sticks, and other similar toys for their kids… and many have not. Is your refusal to buy one based on concern for your own child’s safety or because you’re afraid he’ll cause harm to someone else?

I live on a sloping street. My heart is in my mouth when I watch children zooming down the street toward the busy corner, most without wearing a helmet. But unless I plan to stand guard at the intersection, there’s nothing to do but say an extra kapitel Tehillim.

On a similar note, many Yiddishe families gebentcht with kinderlach now live near some local train tracks. Although cement walls have been erected for the safety of the neighborhood, I recently noted children playing on the tracks. As a train was idling nearby, I spotted bikes being driven between the rails and little kids balancing on the tracks. I have lived in my neighborhood for over forty years and have never seen a more terrifying sight.

Parents, please tell your children that tracks are not a playground! We don’t even want to imagine what could happen if a child got stuck on the tracks when the warning gate was in place. Hashem yishmor!

KASHRUS ALERT

Regarding the trend of baking sourdough challah or bread, it’s important to be aware of the kashrus complications associated with the cast iron pots necessary for the process.

Cast iron pots are always pre-seasoned with non-kosher fats (even when the label specifies that it was seasoned with vegetable oil). In order to use a cast iron pot, you must put it through the process of libun, which you can do by placing the pot in an oven and running a self-clean cycle. If this was not done, you may not eat bread that was baked in it. After libun, the pot needs to be toiveled again, without a bracha

Please note: The pot will be extremely hot after the selfclean cycle and can easily break, so handle with care.

Empowered With Emunah

This argument is strange. The two points seem unrelated. What difference does it make that Moshe was not the father of Klal Yisroel? It is not as if being their father would have given him a supply of meat!

VLADISLOV WAS CONVERSING with his fellow Polish farmers. One of them praised the Yismach Yisroel of Alexander. “This rabbi is even greater than the local priest!” he said. The priest was the most respected individual Vladislov knew, so this comment took him by surprise. He decided he must visit the tzaddik who was even more special than the priest.

Vladislov came up with a plan and embarked on a journey to Alexander. In the forest on the outskirts of the town, he removed his farmer clothes and donned the garb of a frum Yid. This way, he figured, it would seem as if he was just another Jew coming to the rabbi, and nobody would be any the wiser. His naturally bushy beard was the final touch to his getup. He looked like a true chassid.

Arriving at the Rebbe’s court, Vladislov discovered that his plan wasn’t as simple as he’d hoped. Five days passed without the Yismach Yisroel coming out of his room, and when he finally did, nobody was able to approach him. During this time, Vladislov continued playing the part of a chassid, and none of the other chassidim were aware of his true identity.

Finally, on Erev Shabbos, when a group of chassidim arrived in town to spend Shabbos with their Rebbe, they were all able to go over to the Rebbe and wish him shalom aleichem. Vladislov would not miss this opportunity, and he pressed himself among the crowd, waiting for his turn for a handshake.

To his surprise, when he drew near, the Rebbe refused to

shake his hand. The Rebbe simply said, “Gei peiger — Go breathe your last!”

Vladislov did not understand Yiddish and imagined that the Rebbe had blessed him just as he had blessed the other visitors. But Reb Elchonon, the chassid who’d been standing just behind Vladislov, could not process what he had just witnessed. Whoever heard of such a thing? That the Rebbe should curse a chassid?

Elchonon decided he must follow this man. Certainly the Rebbe’s words would come true, he thought with temimus. Surely this man would die.

Indeed, Elchonon did not have to wait long to see the following events unfold. Immediately after he got his “bracha,” Vladislov prepared to return home. He was excited to make fun of the Rebbe to his fellow farmers. “He didn’t even realize that I’m not one of them!” he’d say.

Vladislov made his way to the forest, unaware that he was being followed. He turned to the tree on which he had hung his clothes, removed his Jewish garb, and donned his peasant clothes.

Elchonon could not believe his eyes and looked on incredulously. Suddenly, right then and there, Vladislov fell to the ground. Indeed, the words of the tzaddik had come true!

From mouth to ear, the tale spread quickly among the chassidim. “A mofes, a mofes!” they cried out.

When Klal Yisroel implored Moshe Rabbeinu for meat, Moshe turned to Hashem, insisting that the leadership was too much for him to bear. He rhetorically asked whether he was the father of this nation and then asked, “From where can I get meat to give to the entire nation?” (Bamidbar 11:12–13).

But when word came back to the Yismach Yisroel, the Rebbe reassured his followers that he had performed no miracle. “It was simply Reb Elchonon’s pure emunah, convinced as he was that the curse would come true, that empowered the words to become a reality,” the Rebbe explained.

Unquestionably, the tzaddik’s curse had power of its own, but his explanation teaches us that true emunah has the ability to infuse our words with true power.

Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz, zt”l, explains our original question following this line of reasoning.

The way of the world is that children rely on their parents to provide them with all of their needs. This belief on the part of the children infuses the parents with the power and ability to give them every necessity.

This is what Moshe Rabbeinu was saying. If he were the father of Klal Yisroel, the Yidden would depend on him the way children depend on their parents, and their emunah would grant him the power to provide them with their needs, including meat to eat. However, since he was not the father of Klal Yisrael, their belief in him was deficient, and consequently, the question arose: “From where can I get meat to give them?”

After he was megayer, Yisro was called “Chovev,” from the root word “chaviv ” (fondness), because he loved the Torah. In the Torah, there are twelve pesukim speaking of Yisro, like the numerical value of “Chovev.”

Suddenly, right then and there, Vladislov fell to the ground. Indeed, the words of the tzaddik had come true!

“Whatever its price, you paid only for the cover,” the great mekubal Rav David Abuchatzeira said to his esteemed visitor. “It is impossible to pay for this siddur itself, because its worth is beyond any price. One can be mechayeh meisim [revive the dead] through this siddur!”

Two hundred years old, survivor of two world wars, handwritten, and a centerpiece of thousands of miraculous stories, the Csenger siddur holds the holy

tears of tzaddikim past and present, a precious portal of connection and miraculous help. Its story begins not in Csenger or Hungary at all,

but in the holy court of Reb Meir of Premishlan [17831850]. Rav Meir is perhaps one of the most renowned chassidish rebbes of all time. An eminent tzaddik who cared deeply about his people, he seemed to live in a world where Hashem’s presence was openly revealed.

Once, among the stream of truth seekers and troubled Yidden who found their way to Reb Meir, an unknown Hungarian Yid arrived in Premishlan to request that Reb Meir’l daven for him. Reb Meir’s surprising reaction was to send him back to Hungary, to seek out Rav Usher Anschel Halevi Jungreis, the young rav and Rosh Yeshiva of Csenger. “The Csenger Rav can daven for you,” he said.

The great Reb Meir had never laid eyes on Rav Jungreis. He passed away in 1850, when the Csenger Rav was only 36 years old, and their paths never crossed. Yet he saw him as a giant who was capable of effecting tremendous yeshuos for his people, and he commissioned a scribe to write a special siddur with the kavanos of the Arizal, which he sent to faraway Csenger as a gift. Rav Jungreis used this siddur for over thirty years, while he served as rav of the town and as a prominent leader of Hungarian Jewry.

The siddur became a fountain of blessing and holiness.

CSENGER, A WORLD OF MIRACLES

Today, Csenger’s only claim to fame is its status as the poorest town in Hungary, and the thousands of people who come to daven at the kivrei tzaddikim. But Csenger, in the Eastern side of Hungary, not far from the Yiddishe bastions of Satmar and Munkatch, and just miles from the Romanian border, played host to a unique and illustrious individual whose reputation for Torah genius and miracle works reverberated through the frum world in his time.

Rav Usher Anschel Halevi Jungreis zt”l was a close talmid of the Maharam Asch. He was a Talmudic prodigy and as a young man, the Chasam Sofer wanted to appoint him as the writer of his teshuvos. His rebbe, the Maharam Asch, addressed him in writing with rare compliments, calling him “the rav, my close friend, the miracle-worker.”

In 1834, Rav Jungreis was appointed rav of Csenger, where he would serve for 40 years. He led a ye-

shiva and authored the sefer Menuchas Usher. Rav Shmuel Shmelke Klein, rav of Selish during that time, described him as “the biggest mekubal in Hun-

gary.” The Yetev Lev, who was Rav in Sighet, wrote admiringly of his greatness “mofeis hador vehadaro,” the wonder of the generation and its glory. Eyewitnesses testified that on some days, 100 wagons of petitioners could be seen arriving in the little town seeking the rav’s advice and his blessing.

The Yidden of Csenger spoke of patients who went into the Rav’s home paralyzed, and walked out on their own two feet. To camouflage the wonders of healing, the Csenger Rav used to write medical prescriptions, which were filled by the local pharmacist.

Eventually, when the pharmacist of Csenger wanted to retire, he was able to sell his business for a good price and move to the capital city of Budapest. A year after the move, he came back to visit his old friends and asked the new owner how business was.

“Terrible,” the pharmacist said.

“Why, has the rabbi died? Does he no longer send prescriptions?”

“He does, but he always orders different medications. I can’t get a sense of which medicines to order in bulk, and I don’t always have the items which he prescribes.”

The old owner laughed. “You fool! I never gave any of the medicines. I just went to the back of the store, mixed up some flavored water, and sold it. It’s the rabbi’s powers that heal people; it’s not the medicine.”

cia who was known to have an understanding of medicine, was once visiting Rav Menachem Mendel of Dezh, known as the Maaglei Tzeddek, after the sefer

chassid mentioned to him that one of the local Yidden was a Jungreis, a grandchild of the Menuchas Usher. The Rebbe’s immediate comment was a reference to the Lemberger Rav – “Rav Yosef Shaul is mazkir himself by him.”

THE RAV’S SIDDUR

There, in Csenger, the rav davened and the Eibishter answered. The siddur written at Reb Meir of Premishlan’s behest became a legend. The Csenger Rav used it for over thirty years, and it was passed down in the illustrious Jungreis family. (Before World War II, there were eighty-five rabbanim by the name of Rav Jungreis in Hungary, and all of them were descendants of Rav Usher Anschel. Today, several dynasties and thousands of descendants carry his legacy.)

he authored. The Maaglei Tzedek had a medicine on his table which the Csenger Rav had prescribed. “What is this?” he asked his knowledgeable guest.

Rav Eluzor Reischer examined it and remarked. “It’s a dangerous substance, a poison. But if the Menuchas Usher sent it to you, it will help.”

Rav Jungreis’ reputation as a towering talmid chacham and mekubal spread throughout Europe and across communal divides. His tefillos were recognized to have a special power.

Far away, in Lvov, Galicia, the Lemberger Rav, Rav Yosef Shaul Nathanson zt”l [1808-1875], author of Sefer Shoel Umeishiv, and the outstanding posek of the generation, was impressed enough by the reputation of the Menuchas Usher to ask him to daven for him. This was highly uncommon — Rav Nosson Gestetner [19322010] writes that the Menuchas Usher was the one and only tzaddik of whom the Lemberger Rav made this request.

This unusual request became well known. When the holy Rav Aharon of Belz was in Budapest after escaping the Gestapo in Poland during World War II, a

Rebbes and rabbanim flocked to use the siddur. In the early 1900s, the Minchas Elazar of Munkatch came to Csenger and spent some time poring over it before preparing his own siddur for publication. In more recent times, after it was brought to New York following the Holocaust, the Ribnitzer Rebbe came to daven from the Csenger siddur every Erev Rosh Chodesh. The rebbe would bring along a pile of his most complex kvittlach and lay them in the pages of the ancient siddur as he beseeched the One Above to help Yidden with their troubles.

The Baba Sali, Rav Yisrael Abuchatzeira, once asked that a picture of the Menuchas Usher be brought to him, as gazing at it is a segulah to gain yiras shamayim. His grandson, Rav David Abuchatzeira, placed a kvittel in the pages,

which remains there, along with the kvittel placed by the previous Skulener Rebbe zy”a, and that of the Toldos Aharon Rebbe shlita.

“One Thursday, we got a phone call begging us to place a kvittel in the Csenger siddur,” relates the Gorlitzer Rebbe of Boro Park, a Csenger descendant. “It was a Mr. Gross from Flatbush, whose daughter, aged 32, had just suffered a brain aneurysm. An MRI to check the extent of the damage was scheduled for Friday, and we placed the kvittel and davened as the family waited in excruciating fear. On Sunday morning I spoke to Mr. Gross. Against all expectations, his daughter had opened her eyes on Shabbos afternoon. She had waved weakly. Ten days later, she was in rehab, and just four weeks later, it was time to make a seudas hoda’ah.”

Another miracle happened to Family G. in Boro Park. They’d excitedly welcomed their first grandchild when joy turned to confusion, then fear. The doctors insisted that there was something very wrong with the baby, who’d soon be facing severe medical issues. The family placed a kvittel in the Csenger siddur and poured their hearts out in prayer as they kept silent about the concerns the medical team kept pointing out. Eventually, the family merited a complete

yeshuah, and the doctors were proven wrong. The patriarch of the family traveled to the tziyun of the Menuchas Usher in Csenger to offer his thanks, and at the same time, asked the tzaddik to intervene for the sake of his son, who was long past the age when Chassidishe bochurim usually marry, and still had not found a shidduch. “If he finds the right one within thirty days, I’ll come back,” Mr. G. found himself saying. And he did.

Messengers from the Rebbes of Belz and Viznitz have also arrived to place kvittlach within the holy pages. But just as in Csenger of old, it is not only the learned and the elevated who can gain from the power of the ancient siddur. Just as we know that streams of Yidden flocked to the Csenger Rav, it is clear that 150 years after Rav Usher Anschel Jungreis left this world for the Olam Ha’emes, he is still advocating for Yidden in front of the Kisei Hakavod. Couples who were told they could never have children, and countless singles who waited long for their turn to marry have been helped. The special siddur the Menuchas Usher left behind, soaked with the holy tears of true tefillah, is a gift which simply keeps on giving — as long as we ask.

Emphasizing messages of solidarity and resilience, Mayor Eric Adams spoke energetically at last week’s Gracie Mansion’s Jewish heritage reception, an annual event that pays homage to New York City’s Jewish history and acknowledges the efforts of outstanding individuals.

Adams wasted no time in expressing his distaste for antiSemitic remarks made by a class representative at last week’s City University of New York Law School graduation. Adams, who had spoken at the graduation and had left before the speech was made, made it clear that hate will not be tolerated in New York City.

“One of the most devastating parts of our history is when people remain in the room and allow people to desecrate others,” said Adams. “I would tell you, if I was on that stage when those comments were made, I would’ve stood up and denounced them immediately, because we cannot allow that.”

The mayor also spoke about the common bonds shared by the Jewish and African-American communities, noting that both have faced similar struggles and lauding the importance of harmony between all New Yorkers.

“We must send a loud message that our secret weapon is our ability to live among each other, and hidden in the crevices of this community is a powerful term called ‘mitzvah,’” said Adams. “Built into your culture is giving back. If you look in the history of the relationship in general of what you do for America, but specifically for the African American community, that became an enriched relationship with the Jewish community.”

Members of the NYPD and the Tanzers were both honored for their contributions to New York City.

A Day To Remember, as Holocaust Survivors Enjoy Free NYC Cruise

One hundred Holocaust survivors spent a memorable afternoon last week as they sailed around New York City while enjoying a gourmet meal, live entertainment and the gorgeous spring weather on a free two-hour cruise sponsored by the Boro Park Jewish Community Coalition and United Task Force.

The cruise took place on May 31, with survivors and their caregivers offered free transportation from Boro Park to the Brooklyn Army Terminal, where they boarded The Atlantis, ready to enjoy a magnificent event.

Comedian Yoely Lebovits expounded on the cruise’s theme — Remembering, Rebuilding and

Renewing — as he told the guests of honor that they became the architects of their succeeding generations.

“It was your decisions that made this generation who we are today,” said Lebovits. “You could have just given up, but you never did.”

Gifted with tote bags filled with goodies including pashmina scarves, toiletries and a senior resources booklet, participants glowed with excitement as they sailed past the Statue of Liberty and sang G-d Bless America along with Lebovits. Many danced and sang to the music as the afternoon unfolded, and the cruise ended on a high note. The survivors received bouquets of flowers before boarding the buses that took them back to Boro Park.

The idea for the cruise was born during a meeting between BPJCC CEO Rabbi Avi Greenstein and United Task Force executive committee members, Faye Zakheim and Rabbi Labish Becker. It took several weeks to pull the details together, but the end result made it all worthwhile, noted Rabbi Greenstein.

“We wanted to give our cherished Holocaust survivors something to look forward to, something extraordinary and something special,” Rabbi Greenstein told The Boro Park View “It was a special opportunity for us to be able to give to them and hear from them, enjoying not just a day together but seeing our generations rebuilding, which was truly memorable.”

As the daughter of Holocaust survivors, Zakheim was moved by being able to do something meaningful to those who lived through unimaginable horrors.

“My eyes were tearing the whole time from joy, seeing people who went through horrors in their life exuding so much happiness,” said Zakheim.

Those thoughts were echoed by Rabbi Becker, who described the cruise as one of the most emotional experiences of his life.

“These are our heroes who kept Judaism alive under incal-

culably difficult circumstances,” observed Rabbi Becker. “We can never do enough to show our hakaras hatov.”

Volunteers Rescue Suitcase From City Sanitation Truck

Suited up in gloves, gowns and masks, a group of volunteers from Boro Park made their way through the contents of a city sanitation truck last week, hunting down a lost suitcase that had been accidentally picked up with the trash.

BoroPark24 reported that a visitor from Israel arrived at a home in Boro Park and left his suitcase outside his host’s home next to the trash cans, where it was taken by sanitation workers during their morning pickup. Both Chaverim and Shomrim were called in to locate the missing suitcase, spending several hours identifying the truck that held the suitcase, which contained not only the visitor’s clothing but also his passport, documents, tallis and tefillin

A Department of Sanitation supervisor agreed to wait an extra day for the truck to empty its load at a Williamsburg dumping station, making it possible to assemble a group of more than a dozen volunteers to sift through the massive pile of trash. Having determined that the suitcase was likely at the back end of the truck, the suitcase was located in less than five minutes, somewhat mangled on the outside, but with its contents fully intact.

Chase Online Banking Bug Has Customers Seeing Double

It took several hours for the problem to be resolved, but Chase customers were anything but happy when they discovered that their bank balances were far lower than expected last Friday.

The Associated Press reported that a glitch in Chase’s online banking system had double payments coming out of customer accounts.

Customer Rochelle Saenz-Lopez complained that her automatic payments, including her prescription payments, were being declined because the error left her $1,200 over-

drawn on her account. Another account holder described crying after a $1,300 negative balance left her unable to cover her rent and car payments.

With many bills scheduled to be paid on the first of the month, the bug hit customers particularly hard. Chase eventually responded with an apology that read, “We’re sorry that some customers are seeing duplicate transactions and fees on their checking account. We’re working to automatically reverse any duplicates and adjust any related fees.”

The message fell flat for many Chase customers, who felt like the bank was trying to minimize the issue.

By late Friday, Chase said that it had resolved the problem and was in the process of issuing refunds and reversing transactions. While online banking is typically reliable, its failures can often have widespread effects, but customers are not liable for any errors or charges caused by those malfunctions.

NYSP Continuing Palisades Parkway Crackdown

With the number of serious and fatal Palisades Interstate Parkway crashes on the rise, the New York State Police conducted a nearly two-week-long crackdown on the parkway, hoping to prevent dangerous driving behaviors.

Police said that they issued 993 tickets on the New York section of the Palisades from May 15 to May 28. Of those tickets, 527 were issued to speeders, with eight motorists arrested for driving while intoxicated.

While its Aggressive Driving Campaign is officially over, drivers can still expect to see state troopers stationed on the parkway for the foreseeable future. A statement issued by the NYSP said that it is encouraging all drivers to drive safely, obey posted speed limits, and refrain from using electronic devices, alcohol or drugs while operating their vehicles.

Inclusivity and Fun Go Hand in Hand at LEGOLAND, Newly Certified as an Autism Center

Orange County’s LEGOLAND isn’t just kicking off the season with a new water playground; the Hudson Valley theme park is also LEGOLAND’s first location to be designated a Certified Autism Center.

New City Patch reported that all staff at LEGOLAND New York have been trained in best practices to serve visitors with autism and their families. Rides at the Chester theme park have posted sensory guide signs, a comprehensive planning tool explaining how each attraction can affect the five senses, with descriptions of any bright lights, loud sounds or other components that could pose a problem for guests with autism. LEGOLAND has also created “quiet rooms” for those who need to get away from the excitement, furnished with dimmable lighting and sensory swings.

A Merlin Entertainment attraction, LEGOLAND has been working toward becoming a Certified Autism Center over the past year, in keeping with its mission to inspire creativity in children of all abilities.

“Through this certification, we’re providing our guests with more opportunities to create and play their way, while supporting parents through every step of the vacation planning journey,” said Merlin CEO Scott O’Neil.

The designation will also go a long way toward easing the isolation that many people with autism and their families can feel, with challenging behaviors often leading to stigmatizing scenarios.

“It allows the family to have a lot of fun without the worry or fear that they might have to leave,” explained Eliza Bozenski of the Anderson Center for Autism in Dutchess County.

Those changes can also benefit entire families, creating opportunities for families to enjoy LEGOLAND together.

“It sends a signal that all are welcome,” noted Bozenski.

The Schmoozing Season was still going strong.

Unlike sports or trading, schmoozing was a portable activity. As Fraidy’s class lined up at the door to go to the auditorium for the Rosh Chodesh Adar assembly, the chatter around Fraidy was loud and fiery. The girls were debating ideas for Purim shtick, voting down one impractical idea after the next.

Fraidy found herself standing right behind her cousin Chevi and Tziporah Meyer. Shevy Schwartz was absent — she had the flu and this was her second day out — and Fraidy felt like the person Fraidy was standing among her classmates but really, she wasn’t actually there. She floated somewhere in the air, weightless, invisible.

They weren’t talking about Chevi’s house today, and Chevi wasn’t even leading the conversation this time. Still, it was very obvious that her cous-

in was ignoring her. Throughout the day, Chevi’s eyes would land on her from time to time, and when she’d see Fraidy notice, she’d smooth the sweatband on her head, arrange her eyes in a disinterested squint and coolly look away. Then Chevi would pull one of her friends over and start talking to her in a low voice, leaving Fraidy to wonder if she really had something to tell that friend or she simply wanted Fraidy to feel left out.

Now, standing behind Chevi in line, Fraidy bent her toes in her shoes, not sure where to put herself. Chevi knew she was standing behind her, and as they waited for Mrs. Shiffer to lead them out of the classroom, she never once turned her head around — even by mistake.

Racheli Gluckstein, Fraidy’s partner, was talking to the pair of girls behind them, as though there was nobody standing next to her. It was probably by

chance, but Fraidy couldn’t help feeling like Chevi’s… mood had rubbed off on the whole class. Why wouldn’t Racheli talk to her?

“Okay, follow me, girls,” Mrs. Schiffer said. She opened the door, and the class streamed into the hallway. The line dissolved with girls skipping ahead, and Fraidy, dragging her feet, ended up all the way in the back, an afterthought.

Assemblies were always exciting. Their principal, Mrs. Kviat, told the best stories, and every Rosh Chodesh a different class put on a cute performance. And of course, there was nosh.

Adar meant an especially exciting assembly. Everyone waited to see what the program that year would be, but Fraidy wasn’t interested. Her throat ached, but not a strep-y kind of ache; it was a soreness that connected with her eyes, collecting the tears that she kept swallowing back.

This was so stupid. The whole fight with her cousin was stupid. So what if Chevi liked to go on and on about her house? Why did that have to bother her? It was a huge excitement, Fraidy could understand that.

Maybe Chevi was acting like a baby. But that didn’t mean Fraidy couldn’t act maturely. It was worth it to swallow some of her pride in order to clear up the ugly atmosphere, to make things normal between them again.

Chevi had settled into a seat in the center of their class’s row, with Tziporah, Shaindy and Sari crowded around her. Again, Fraidy stood in the aisle, unsure of where to sit down.

The assembly was great, but Fraidy didn’t enjoy herself. The teachers got on stage wearing uniforms and performed a very funny skit, but instead of watching and laughing along with the rest of the class, Fraidy’s gaze kept flitting over to Chevi. When Mrs. Schiffer started passing around bags of cotton candy, she finally made up her mind: She was going to do it. She was going to make this stop.

It took until dismissal for the opportunity to come up. When the girls were all packed up and waiting in the front yard to get onto their buses, Fraidy walked over to Chevi.

She wound her briefcase strap around her finger tightly, and although her legs felt a little shaky, she repeated to herself in her head, I can do this. I can be mature.

All she had to do was show some genuine interest in Chevi’s house. That would make her cousin happy. That would make the fight end.

“Hey, Chevi,” she said, careful to keep her tone natural. “How’s construction in your house coming along? Are any

more walls up already?”

She waited for Chevi to flash a proud smile, or even a snobby one; she would really be okay with that right now.

But Chevi didn’t flash any sort of smile. She flashed fire instead.

“What’s it your business where our house is up to?”

Fraidy gripped her briefcase straps.

“I was just…” she stammered.

Chevi crushed an empty water bottle in her hand. “You were just jealous, huh? I bet you’re going to go home and beg your mother to move to a nice, big house. Right? You can’t handle it that your cousin is going to have a huge playroom while you keep your games in the same closet as your sweaters. And you hardly even have games, because you have nowhere to keep them, so you’re jealous of that, too. You’re such a baby. I don’t feel like telling you about my house. It’s none of your business where it’s up to!”

A stinging cold settled over Fraidy. She clutched the end of her briefcase straps, pulling so tightly that the tips of her fingers turned white.

The secretary called out, “Green bus!” Fraidy’s feet felt like tree trunks as she forced one in front of the other in the direction of the bus. She searched for a seat far away from Chevi, but girls were crowded in the aisle, blocking her from passing, so she sat down at the edge of the only empty seat.

She could hear every word her cousin was saying. She was talking to Sari Bauer, discussing Purim costume themes.

“So we’re being baristas,” Chevi was saying, “with custom logos on our aprons. And my mother’s doing these whole breakfast package things for shalach manos, you know, from her business. It’s going to be sooooo cool.”

Sari said something, Fraidy couldn’t make out the words, and then Chevi continued, in a voice loud enough for Fraidy to hear, but with a pretend-low pitch to make it sound like she wasn’t supposed to: “Just don’t tell Fraidy Stroh about this. Their family never does themes, so she’s going to be sooooo jealous.”

Sari’s laughter was like the roar of a power tool. It echoed in her ears, it vibrated in her head, it thundered on and on, long after Fraidy arrived home and locked herself in her room.

“Fraidy?” her mother called.

Her mother’s voice was soft. Loving, familiar, safe. For a wild moment, Fraidy wanted to burst out of her room and fall into her mother’s arms, weep and wail while her moth-

er stroked her back and rocked her back and forth. If she told her mother, her mother would confront Lani, or maybe even Chevi directly, and yell at her, punish her, stare at her with the most threatening eyes, tell her that all… this… had better stop, or else.

But she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t tell her mother. Her mother would think she was making up stories; she would never believe her.

She blocked out the echo of screeching drills, squeezed her eyes shut to blot out the bus scene and muffle the laughter, and with only the slightest snag in her voice called back, “I’m coming.”

Lani had promised her mother a cooking day, and now the day had come.

The Millers always hosted a crowd for the Purim seudah. In addition to Lani, Riva and their families, there were their Lipshutz cousins, who’d moved from Eretz Yisroel and had no family in New York. Then Mrs. Miller’s sisters still joined them every year, some of them coming with their married couples already because nobody wanted to give up the tradition. And every year different faces hung around — visitors who extended their quick “ah freilichen Purim” visits at Mr. Miller’s behest to, “Go wash, come on, you’re here already, just sit down and eat.”

That meant a lot of cooking, and Mrs. Miller appreciated Lani’s help. “As long as I’m not cooking out of my basement kitchen, I’m happy to do it,” she’d told her mother. “Plus it’s a nice change from preparing breakfast food. It’ll be fun!”

Stuffed cabbage was the big project of the day. That was Mrs. Miller’s specialty, so she worked on that while Lani prepared spinach knishes, pastrami orzo, apple pie, and a few roasts.

“I was starting to think about another seudah, actually,” Mrs. Miller told Lani as she peeled the Saran wrap off a pan of checked cabbage leaves.

Lani stepped back from the stove as oil splattered from the searing meat. “Which seudah?”

“Kidding, I don’t really mean a

seudah-seudah… Our anniversary’s after Shavuos, right? So it’s a big number this year. Our fortieth.”

“Oh, wow! Wow. That’s like, huge, Ma.”

Mrs. Miller spooned ground beef mixture into a cabbage leaf. “Yup, it is. Feels like yesterday, feels like a million years.”

There was something about the way her mother said this that made Lani smile. It was so sweet, these golden years.

She tried picturing herself and Chaim Tzvi at that stage. Would Chaim Tzvi still be a fundraiser then, or would his dream of becoming a life coach materialize? Would Break In still exist?

Will we still be living in the basement?

She pushed the thought away. Why ruin this pleasant motherdaughter day with bleak worries?

Then again, this was her mother. Whom else should she share her worries with if not her?

She jabbed two forks into the roast in the pan, and in a quick motion, transferred it into the pan on the counter. There were a few small drips, which she quickly wiped.

Her mother was rolling cabbage like a machine. Flatten, fill, roll, into the pot.

“Ma,” Lani started.

“Hmm?”

“What do you think we should do? Are we going to stay living in our basement forever?”

Mrs. Miller’s face fell into a pattern of lines that reminded Lani of the time of her school play in high school. Lani had so badly wanted to act. She knew how to act, certainly a lot better than the girl who was chosen for the lead role. She’d been devastated. And her mother’s sympathy had been so sincere, so comforting.

She couldn’t help her then, and she couldn’t help her now. But it felt so good to share the burden. A mother would always be a mother.

“I’ll try to talk to Tatty,” her mother said. “Maybe he can do something.”

Good joke. How would her father be able to “do something” for them? From his safrus money? Or from the $850 he collected every month from his one tenant in Connecticut? Or maybe from her mother’s occasional subbing jobs?

They finished the day’s cooking, and Lani helped her mother clean up the kitchen.

“Take home food for supper,” Mrs. Miller said.

“Ooh, thanks. I think I’ll do that.”

She was hurrying home to catch Simcha’s bus when Riva called her.

“Question. Do you think there’s something going on in school, in Fraidy and Chevi’s class?”

“Not that I know of. Why?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Fraidy’s acting a little interesting lately. It’s probably nothing, I was just wondering if you knew anything.”

“Nope.” Lani paused at the corner, waiting for the light to change. “Uh, by the way…”

“Yeah?”

“Mommy just told me that her and Tatty’s anniversary this year will be their fortieth. She didn’t say this directly, but I got the hint that she kind of wants a real celebration.”

“And that means…?”

“That means us.”

Let’s talk about investing – and your next step –by looking at some typical questions my clients ask.

ISN’T THE BANK THE BEST PLACE FOR ME TO KEEP MY MONEY?

Generally, your money is insured in a bank — but it’s also losing value. If the current inflation rate is almost 5% and the bank is paying you about 1%, then you’re losing money. For your money not to lose value, you need the interest you’re making to equal the inflation rate. Ideally, you’d like your money to increase, not just break even.

If you want your money to work for you, instead of you working for your money, investing is the way to go.

I OWE MONEY ON MY MORTGAGE. SHOULD I PAY IT OFF INSTEAD OF INVESTING?

If you have high-interest debt — meaning, any debt on which you’re paying an interest rate over 7% — you should pay that off before you put aside money in an investment. Credit card debt is one of the first that you should pay off, as it can reach 28% annually. Also, ideally, you should have at least three months of expenses saved, in case of emergency.

If these numbers seem unrealistic to you, take a look at your expenses and see where you can cut back and start saving, even temporarily.

AND THEN I CAN INVEST?

One more step first: After you’ve done all that, max out your retirement accounts — especially if it’s a 401k where your employer matches your contribution. This employer-matching gives you a 100% return — and the tax rate on these accounts when you retire is really favorable.

That’s done? Great, you’re ready to invest!

I’M KINDA NERVOUS THAT I COULD LOSE MY MONEY. HOW LIKELY IS THAT?

You might lose money if you invest it — but you’re guaranteed to lose money if you don’t invest it. (Take a peek back at the first question above.)

Investing doesn’t have to be risky. Individual stocks can be risky, but historically, the stock market is not. And even less risky than stocks are high-quality bonds.

SHOULD I INVEST ONLY IN BONDS, THEN?

Probably not, because generally, stocks offer a higher yield. Here’s a cool trick called the rule of 130: Subtract your age from 130. The number you get tells you how to divide your portfolio between stocks and bonds.

In general, bonds — which are a debt instrument — are considered less risky than stocks. If you’re 30 years old, then 130 minus 30 = 100, and you can put 100% into stocks. If you’re 40, you should have 90% of your investments in stocks, and 10% (the remainder) in bonds. As a person gets closer to their retirement age, it’s recommended to have a “safer” portfolio, with lower risk — which also give a lower rate of return.

BUT WHAT SHOULD I INVEST IN?

If you’re not a professional and don’t want the stress of constantly checking the markets or spending hours poring over your portfolio, a good recommendation would be exchange traded funds (ETFs). ETFs trade on the exchange like a stock does, but they’re shares in a fund that’s made up of many stocks.

This lowers your risk significantly.

Another good option is investing in target-date funds. These funds are geared toward the date when you’d like to reach a specific goal – say, graduate, retire, or go on vacation. These funds distribute their risk accordingly.

Then, plan to invest for at least five years. Historically, this buy-and-hold strategy offers an excellent return on your investment.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START INVESTING?

Right now — and this is always the answer. Want to know the biggest investing mistake? It’s this: not investing. Don’t wait for the perfect moment, because no one knows when that will be. Time is one of your biggest allies when it comes to investing. If you can start investing when your kids are young, and ride the market for a good few years, you should have a nice amount put away in time for their weddings — or for your dream home, or retirement, or whatever else you’re saving for.

ANY OTHER ADVICE?

I love open-ended questions! Here it is: Be financially aware, and educate your kids about finances, too. Even if your spouse is the one who usually makes most of the financial decisions, you should understand your own finances enough to be involved in those decisions.

And educate your children. You do your kids a favor when you teach them how to avoid unnecessary debt and make wise financial choices. Living a financially sound life is not the end goal for us Yidden. It’s a tool that can help you — and your kids, and all of us — avoid stress, achieve your dreams, and allow you to focus on what’s really important — and eternal.

PERFECT SUSHI RICE

INGREDIENTS

1½ cups sushi rice

2 cups water

1 tsp. salt

3 T. rice vinegar

1 T. sugar

DIRECTIONS

1. Rinse the sushi rice under a stream of cold water until the water runs clear.

2. Place rice into a medium-size saucepan. Add water and bring to a boil.

3. As soon as the water begins to bubble, lower the heat and allow the rice to simmer for 20 minutes or until all the water is absorbed.

4. Remove the pot from the heat. Keep the lid closed, and allow the rice to steam for 10 minutes.

5. In a small mixing bowl, combine the salt, vinegar and sugar.

6. Combine this mixture with the rice, and fluff with a fork. Your rice is ready.

I tasted this at a local sushi store and knew I needed to find an easy way to make this in the comfort of my house. Here I’m bringing to you my final product: crispy, spicy and delicious!

CRISPY RICE

2 cups cooked rice

½ -¾ cup oil

SPICY TUNA

1 lb. slice sushi-grade tuna, chopped

3 tsp. sriracha

2 tsp. sesame oil

2 T. mayonnaise

3 tsp. soy sauce

1 tsp. lime juice

2 cloves garlic, crushed

½ tsp. salt

GARNISH

Avocado

Jalapeño pepper

Spicy mayo

DIRECTIONS

1. Place your rice in a 5x7-inch baking tray lined with plastic wrap. Shape the rice into a half-inch thick square block.

2. Wrap and refrigerate this block for at least 1 hour or overnight. Alternatively, you can place it in the freezer for about 30 minutes. When the rice is chilled, it’s easy to cut into cubes.

3. Once the rice has chilled, cut the rice into bitesized rectangles.

4. Pour about ½ to ¾ cup of oil into a mediumsize skillet, so the bottom of the skillet is covered with a thin layer of oil. Heat this on high heat for about 30 seconds, until it’s hot.

5. Gently place the rice rectangles in the pan, leaving about 2 inches between each piece. Be careful as the oil may splatter. Cook on medium-high heat for about 3 minutes or until golden-brown, then flip over the pieces and cook them for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the rice from the pan, and place it on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.

6. In a medium-size mixing bowl, mix together the chopped tuna, mayonnaise, sriracha, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, salt and lime juice, until thoroughly combined.

7. To assemble: Place thinly sliced avocado pieces on top of the crispy rice. Top with 1 to 2 tablespoons of spicy tuna. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and a jalapeño pepper slice.

KANI SALMON

A family favorite, time and again. The combination of the soft salmon and the spicy kani is just perfect.

INGREDIENTS

4 slices salmon

2 T. teriyaki sauce

KANI MIXTURE

10 sticks kani, shredded

3 T. mayonnaise

2 tsp. sriracha

1 jalapeño pepper, seeds removed, chopped

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 425°.

2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the salmon on the baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between each slice.

3. Brush each slice with half a tablespoon of teriyaki sauce.

4. In a medium-size mixing bowl, combine the shredded kani, mayonnaise, sriracha and chopped jalapeños.

5. Top each slice of salmon with kani mixture.

6. Bake the salmon for 20 to 25 minutes.

7. Serve with avocado, carrots and sushi rice.

SUSHI CUPS

Sushi cups can be an appetizer for dinner, a perfect lunch option or even a healthy snack. They’re so easy to put together, you’ll keep coming back to it.

CUPS

3 sheets nori

1½ cups cooked sushi rice, cooled

SALMON FILLING

2 slices baby salmon fillet, cubed

2 T. mayonnaise

2 tsp. sriracha

½ tsp. parsley flakes

TOPPING

Toasted sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat your oven to 425°.

2. Cut each nori sheet into four equal squares.

3. In a bowl, toss together all the salmon filling ingredients. Set this aside.

4. Lightly spray a muffin tin with nonstick spray.

5. Spread one heaping tablespoon of rice in the center of each nori square.

6. Arrange each nori square in a muffin cup.

7. Top each sushi cup with a heaping tablespoon of salmon cubes. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake for 17 to 20 minutes, or until the salmon has turned goldenbrown and is cooked through.

8. Take the sushi cups out of the tin, and let them cool completely.

“Like money in the bank” is what people say when they describe something as especially safe.

But what happens when a bank fails? What happens when a few banks fail? And why do banks fail at all?

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE RECENT BANKING CRISIS AND TRY TO ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS.

TThe Great Depression was a really depressing time in so many ways. The economy was doing poorly, 9,000 banks failed, and $7 billion of deposits were lost, leaving their account owners literally penniless. Those were the days before bank insurance, and millions of Americans lost all their savings.

Baruch Hashem, that’s not what’s happening today. President Joe Biden announced that even savings that weren’t guaranteed by the FDIC would be covered by the government. That’s after two regional banks failed in March and another closed its doors in May. All three were taken over by other institutions. But why did they fail in the first place?

First to Go

Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) was a commercial bank that was founded in 1983 to serve startup companies in California. It grew rapidly, soon becoming the sixteenth largest bank in the United States. By December 2022, SVB had $209 billion in assets. In February 2023, Forbes listed Silicon Valley Bank among the “Top 20 of America’s Best Banks.”

But on March 10, federal regulators shut down SVB. What went wrong?

Crisis of Confidence

A few things happened almost simultaneously — including investments losing money and depositors attempting to withdraw their deposits.

“safely.” SVB met that requirement by buying billions of dollars worth of bonds. As the interest rate rose, those older bonds lost some of their market value. If the bank would have held onto them until their “due date,” they’d get all their money — the “face value” of the bonds. But when these bonds have to be sold quickly, they get sold at a loss. And that’s what happened to SVB when their customers lined up, all wanting cash.

Most banks have a pretty diverse clientele. Unusually, SVB serviced one sector almost exclusively: tech clients, companies backed by venture capital, and highnet-worth individuals involved in that field — all of whom were hit hard by the downturn in that industry.

Banking laws — and common sense — require the bank to leave a percentage of its money accessible in case depositors want to access their money. When many people come to withdraw their funds from a bank all at once, and the bank cannot meet that demand, panic could ensue. It’s precisely that panic that causes even more people to converge on the bank and try to withdraw their money — and historically, that is what often led banks to fail.

Another unusual feature of Silicon Valley Bank was its insistence on exclusivity. If a company wanted to borrow money, SVB insisted that not only the loan, but all of that customer’s banking had to be with SVB. Since the FDIC insures up to $250,000 per customer per bank, and a lot of SVB customers had more than that in this one bank, funds were left uninsured and exposed. (After SVB’s collapse, in an effort to shore

up the banking industry, the U.S. government promised to cover the losses of U.S. customers, even though these funds weren’t actually covered by the FDIC. But all that came later.)

Now the bank needed cash, and fast. SVB sold its bonds, and the losses added up. In a classic vicious cycle, customers got nervous and withdrew more funds. After all, they knew the FDIC insurance limit, and they knew they weren’t fully insured.

When SVB tried to raise more funds through outside investors, customers got even more antsy — and SVB closed for the oldest reason in the book: a run on the bank. Now banking regulators stepped in to protect the assets that were left.

Despite their efforts to maintain calm — or perhaps because of them — less than 24 hours later, the New York State Department of Financial Services, concerned about depositors attempting to withdraw their funds from Signature Bank, closed that institution as well. (An FDIC report in April later blamed this closure mostly on bank mismanagement.) And within two months, on May 1, First Republic Bank closed its doors as well.

Is the Entire Banking Sector in Trouble?

It seems not. SVB, Signature and First Republic together represent only 2.4% of all the assets in U.S. banks. And because the U.S. government stepped in quickly to reassure their customers, the “banking crisis of 2023” appears contained.

banking sector,” Reuters quoted David Trainer, CEO of investment research firm New Constructs. “The deposit base from the major banks is much more diversified than SVB, and the big banks are in good financial health.”

International Ripples

Credit Suisse was next in line. The venerable Swiss bank was started in the 1850s, but a series of scandals weakened it in recent years. In shocking displays of poor judgment, Credit Suisse was rocked by scandals ranging from money laundering for Japanese gangs, tax evasion in the U.S. and kickbacks from Mozambique, among others. Rumors of imminent collapse combined with Credit Suisse’s own announcement of “material weaknesses” in its financial reporting of 2021 and 2022 soon caused its largest shareholder to announce that it would not be investing additional funds. As a result, other depositors withdrew their cash and sealed the bank’s fate.

What Happened Next?

First Citizen Bank — one of the largest family-controlled banks in the U.S. — purchased Silicon Valley Bank from the FDIC, and Signature Bank entered receivership under the FDIC’s auspices. First Republic

was acquired by JP Morgan Chase, which seems to be doing quite well. And over in Switzerland, UBS purchased Credit Suisse.

Depositors, bankers, economists and everyday folks around the world all heaved a sigh of relief.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen discussed U.S. government intervention and rescue of the banks when she spoke to the American Bankers Association back in March.

“The steps we took were not focused on aiding specific banks or classes of banks,” she noted. “Our intervention was necessary to protect the broader U.S. banking system.”

Clearly, she meant to reassure depositors as well as investors that the system is safe, and that the U.S. government will continue to do its utmost to maintain that safety.

Other government officials agree that their actions to rescue depositors have stabilized the financial system and prevented additional depositor runs on other banks.

“The U.S. banking system remains sound,” Ms. Yellen added. And the U.S. government is taking steps to reassure depositors, because it’s our confidence in the system that helps her statement ring true.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) was created as part of 1933’s New Deal — specifically, the Banking Act of 1933, aka the Glass-Steagall Act. Its job is to “preserve and maintain public confidence and encourage stability in the financial system through the promotion of sound banking practices.” This independent federal agency insures deposits in U.S. banks that are FDIC members.

WHO PAYS FOR THE FDIC?

The FDIC is funded by insurance premiums that the member banks pay.

Average wages in the United States reached a whopping $28.62 per hour in April 2023, a 7% increase since the same period last year, according to Trading Economics.

Are employers able to keep up? Are employees contributing more value for their dough? Considering the long lists of job opps available, it seems the job market has been trending in favor of the employee. How is this new reality affecting the frum workplace?

Wages: Then and Now

“When I was hired as a fresh graduate back in the late 1980s, I was paid $8 per hour,” says Miriam*, “but when my daughter was looking for a job last summer, I encouraged her to ask closer to $25.”

The job description was more or less the same — both took jobs in the general bookkeeping field — but the pay has quadrupled.

Twenty years ago, when Devorah* joined the workforce, she brought home about $10 per hour, which added up to some $350 per week. She says that back then, this salary was just enough to cover her rent and basic groceries as a young couple.

Esti* took a secretarial position in 2008, with a salary of $12 per hour. About two years later, with the general recession hitting the industry she was working in, her pay was cut to $10. Unhappy as she was with the reduction, she remained committed to her job, coming in daily from nine to five.

If you were not in the workforce at that time, you’re probably scratching your head, wondering why Esti didn’t wave her boss goodbye and take a new job. That’s what any young employee would do today. But this underscores one significant change the workforce has seen over the last decade or so: The wheel has turned in the workers’ favor.

Businesses are desperate for manpower, which drives up the pay rates exponentially. And they keep climbing.

tor. She considered her $18 per hour pay very nice. After working for one year, she received her first raise. However, to her surprise, a new co-worker hired to do the same job at the time was being offered even more than Chava’s new rate!

“During Covid, salaries for entry-level positions with no prior experience ranged between $16 and $20 per hour,” says a recruiter, who wishes to remain anonymous. “One year later, the going rate had jumped to $18 to $23 per hour. Today, I would say the typical office position pays, on average, even more.”

The radical climb seems to boil down to two main factors: inflation and a shortage of workers.

Are Salaries Inflated?

“To be brutally honest, they are,” says Shlomo, CEO of a business with some 25 employees. “But so are grocery bills and real estate.”

With the cost of living skyrocketing, it is only logical that income rates climb proportionately. Salaries must follow a similar curve, or people won’t be able to make ends meet.

When Esti was paid $12 per hour, she was paying less than $1,000 in monthly rent. Likewise, Miriam paid $3 to $5 per hour for babysitting over the years; today babysitters can easily charge double that range.

While staff members may not necessarily be any more productive than they used to be, they must be compensated better. This triggers the inevitable cycle of companies charging more money for their goods and services, which continues to increase the cost of living and up the demand for higher pay.

With the general inflation still current events, we stand on unsteady ground. No one knows what to expect next.

Where Are the Workers?

Compounding the inflated finances is the lack of manpower.

The workforce as a whole is still feeling the aftermath of Covid, an era aptly described as “The Great Resignation.” Unemployment compensation pushed many out of the office, and life without work became the norm. A large percentage of former employees are happy to remain stay-athome moms or part-time workers.

More recently, there has been a rebound — with a twist. In 2022, more than 50 million workers quit their jobs in search of more flexibility, more pay or a better work-life balance. Many of them have ultimately been rehired at new positions, but this shuffling makes for constant vacancies and a highly competitive market. As a result, employee retention has become an all-consuming task.

By virtue of supply and demand, the shortage of workers translates into higher compensation, because a new attitude has cropped up: Pay me well — or I’ll find a new job!

Chava shares how after working at one place for a while, she was contacted by a staffing company.

“How much do you earn?” the recruiter asked. “I will find you a job that will pay you $10 more per hour.”

It Has Become a Workers’ Market

A good employer must understand what will keep a potential employee anchored to their job.

Whereas in years gone by the primary motivating factors were more related to the work itself, what pushes people to work these days is often superficial.

“I loved the sense of satisfaction I had when I got things done,” says Miriam. “It was a great feeling to be able to manage the quick pace. I wanted to work!”

“Fun client experiences, being out in the world, and of course, my paycheck,” were what pushed Devorah to work.

Esti shares that she wanted to feel accomplished. “I didn’t want to sit home all day; I wanted to do things! I especially enjoyed problem solving. All problems in the office landed on my desk.”

TODAY

“Fun and pay,” a graduate said — in that order — when asked what she is looking for in a job.

Another graduate admitted that she’d prefer taking a job that requires little skill so she could enjoy her days at a relaxed, slow pace.

In the words of Libby*, who has been in the workforce for just under one year: “Baruch Hashem, I found just the job I was looking for. I wanted a high salary and good company, and my job gives me both.”

A staff recruiter shares what people are looking for in a job today. “Good pay, of course, but also flexibility — lots of flexibility. The girls today also want to know which office will give them the best time.”

Note that job satisfaction didn’t make it onto the list. Still, the business world hasn’t gone completely bankrupt of industrious employees. One Gen Z employee says, “What keeps me at work is the actual job. Many of my coworkers think work should be like camp, but they also work hard getting their jobs done.”

At the end of the day, if you’re an employee in 2023, you know you have options. If you are unhappy at your job, you can probably find a new one easily. This places pressure on management departments, and opens new doors to a competitively social life in the workforce.

Business or Pleasure?

“Once upon a time, people came to work to actually work!” a secretary of three decades says wistfully. But today, fun is a bigger factor than fulfillment. Everyone wants to be part of a larger social scene during work hours.

“I wanted to find an office with lots of girls my age on staff. I wanted to have a good time,” says Libby.

Even bosses who’ve been running no-nonsense offices for decades are beginning to realize that perks have become the new reality. Many companies offer a cafeteria stocked with snacking items, Danishes, soft drinks, cereal, yogurts and more. Some cater party-planned events, have Rosh Chodesh lunches, take staff trips, or go for Shabbatons together (with appropriate gender-separation, of course). Creative activities such as challah bakes or paint parties and treats like ice cream truck visits and raffles also sweep employees up in their excitement.

Bonuses, though not new to the scene, have gone up in scale. A cheesecake for Shavuos, silver knife for Rosh Hashanah, cookbook for Chanukah, gift card for one’s birthday, and the like, also add momentum.

But do these perks

actually motivate employees? Employers certainly hope so.

When employees feel appreciated, they generally perform better. Additionally, in a survey of millennials in the workforce, more than half agreed that good side benefits would influence whether they’d stay at a job.

Take Miriam, for example. She knew it was time for a change — she felt she’d reached a plateau at work — yet she had a hard time making the move. Holding her back was the memory of decades of little gifts and bonuses — tokens of her boss’s appreciation for her tireless work.

Who’s Boss?

While ambition may not rank the number one characteristic among young recruits, a desire to move upward in the hierarchy of a company is growing. A job with potential for a higher position and increased salary will likely be filled more quickly than a stable job with little room for growth.

At the same time, the barriers between management and staff are breaking down very rapidly.

“Years ago, if an employee wanted to take a day or week off, he or she would timidly approach me and ask for my permission,” says Shlomo. “Today my employees send me matter-of-fact emails informing me when they will be out. No questions or approvals. Just an outright statement.”

Does It All Add Up?

Inflation has people seriously contemplating whether the math makes sense.

“Even with my increased paycheck, I can hardly pay my bills,” says Devorah.

Let’s take a bird’s-eye view:

Three years ago, Chaim had a goal of earning $120K to cover his family’s expenses for the year. In reality, he brought home $90K. Today his wage has gone up to $150K — but now his annual budget has increased to $200K. He may be earning more, but the gap has only grown wider. This means that what used to be enough for him to live comfortably leaves him sweating today. Factoring in the higher costs of food, childcare and housing, it seems only justified for salaries to increase exponentially too. Buyers, beware! How will this inflation-spurred cycle affect our daily living?

with the fact that their employees come and go throughout the day as they please.

“This happens because they know they won’t be fired even if they don’t keep their hours religiously,” she says. “For my part, I do try to impress on recruits that reliability and a proper work ethic are the number one priority to their potential employer.”

Mr. Steinberg,* who runs a large corporation, throws a totally different spin on the same reality.

“Motivating our employees is part of our company culture. We make it our business to make each and every employee feel valued for the individual strengths they bring to the company. It doesn’t bother me when a worker takes a day off or a larger-thanallotted lunch break; this just means the employee will come back refreshed with the ability to do their job better. I believe that if an employee is tasked with responsibilities that build on his or her natural abilities, and is appreciated for it, they will truly desire to do their best and be an asset to the company.”

Steinberg points out that the way his staff performs confirms that his theory is correct.

Today the steering wheel may be in the employee’s hands, but he or she has the choice in which direction to steer. As Elon Musk says, “It is possible for ordinary people to choose to be extraordinary.”

Is the changing climate in the workplace a positive thing? What’s coming next? Only time will tell.

My Grandmothers’ Secret Slush Funds

My mother and grandmothers were — and are — all givers, selfless women who gave everything they had.

They were also all world-class money launderers.

Fortunately for me, I’ve inherited that gene as well.

As far back as I can recall, my mother was always squirreling away money. Her wallet featured a secret zippered compartment, which contained wrinkled twenties and the occasional crumpled fifty. Her stocking drawer contained contraband cash, carefully concealed under thick layers of winter socks.

When I’d be sent to fetch her tall boots from her closet, her personal sanctum, I’d do a quick sweep of the heeled shoes. Each time, I’d be sure to discover a Benjamin or two stuffed into the toes of her Ferragamo shoes. But if I’d brightly declare my find in my father’s presence, I’d be treated to what became known in the family lexicon as Evil Eyes.

You see, although my father provided comfortably for his family, my mother had learned from her mother, and her mother before her, too. As my perfectly Hungarian great-grandmother told my mother once in her heavily accented English, “Every smart vohman hez dugne pénz” — Hungarian for “hidden money.”

My great-grandparents had arrived in New York penniless. Through grit and G-d, they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and earned a living for their growing family. But Babi liked nice things. And while the budget furnished food, clothes and shelter, Babi hankered for some of the finer things in life.

Ever resourceful, Babi informed her husband that here in America, the rules were different than in Europe. Here, every husband was expected to provide his wife with a new housecoat every single week. Unaware of the norms of this strange land, he agreed.

Without fail, Zeidy would drive Babi to the shop every week to fulfill his domestic duty. Babi would enter the store, ask for a paper bag with tissue paper, and promptly leave. The money? She stashed that away.

Babi used this fund to purchase little trinkets or matching coats for her girls, and for the occasional manicure. Zeidy, ever oblivious to the rudiments of female fashion, was none the wiser.

My own Babi, her daughter, also had a slush fund. My Zeidy owned a local shop, and Babi was his accountant, manager and cashier. She was also his chief embezzler. Babi’s accounting, shoddy by every measure, included

various receipts and tickets for “discretionary expenses,” scrawled in her loopy, distinctive hand. Customer receipts showed seemingly arbitrary pricing. But the thought that Zeidy might discover her ruse never crossed her mind.

Under the cash register, the pile of dollar bills mounted steadily. Though Babi was known for her fried chicken cutlets, her real expertise was cooking the books. Strange expenses, losses and write-offs were oddly irregular when measured against the success of the thriving business. Those dugne pénz were used to purchase a brand-name bag for her daughter who was starting to teach, extra ruffles and lace at the trimming shops for her girls’ Purim costumes, and the occasional trip to Coney Island.

While my great-grandmother had used her ill-gotten gains to finance her children’s wardrobes, her sons, learning in kollel, had no cash to spare. Her grandchildren needed to look put together, she said, as children of talmidei chachamim should, and so she made sure of that herself.

My own Babi, after a demanding Yom Tov season at the store, would remove her cache from beneath the register and count it. Then she would take the money and head for the nearest jewelry store — not for herself, but to buy a bracelet for each of her daughters, who had worked so hard to make Yom Tov.

As an overwhelmed mother myself, my mother would (and still does!) press a few folded bills into my hands and whisper, “Buy takeout. Get yourself more cleaning help. Just for you.” She sponsors boots for a petulant teenager, a coat for the daughterin-law, and a baby nurse for the tired mother, plugging holes wherever the need arises.

Sure, my mother and grandmother treated themselves once in a great while. But those dugne pénz were for the children. Those rolled up, wrinkled bills in the sock drawer, stuffed beneath the cash register, and hidden in the bowels of closets represented a dynasty of giving.

So when the cleaning help doesn’t show up and I rub my knuckles raw shining the house, I take the money I didn’t pay her and reverently place them into a worn envelope. The money joins other bills from various sources: the time I paid for the cleaner’s with a credit card, the unexpected cash bonus… I count the stash, my lips moving as the numbers increase. Too little, I think. Always too little. My daughter’s graduation is coming up… Then, I shove the envelope into the bottom shelf of my closet, covering it with old chunky winter sweaters, just in case.

People have been carrying around small money holders for thousands of years. But you probably wouldn’t associate the coin purse of a thousand years ago with the slim leather wallet you know. In the early days of paper bill wallets, people who wanted to show off their wealth would wear a wallet stuffed with cash on their belts. “The bigger the man,” they said, “the bigger the wallet.”

Once credit cards showed up on the scene, wallets got considerably slimmer, featuring slots for cards instead of space for cash.

WALLET GUARD

Many wallets today feature RFID protection, in case your credit cards are touchless and can be read by anyone near you. Stories about thieves stealing credit card information just by standing near a person aren’t typical, but a wallet that offers protection from that kind of theft is. Better safe than sorry.

Ever wonder how some people, when they pay with cash, hand over perfectly flat, crisp bills? They’re probably using a long wallet. Long wallets have a cash pocket that bills fit inside without folding them, so the money stays flat and crisp.

Surprisingly enough, based on a study done in American cities, all is not lost when you lose your wallet. Two hundred wallets, some with money inside, were purposely “lost” all over the United States. Happily, more than 60% of the wallets dropped were returned, most still with their money inside.

WHAT’S IN YOUR WALLET?

Some wallets tell you the full story of a person’s life. They include receipts from purchases made years ago, gift cards and credit cards, identity cards and insurance cards, to-do lists and password lists.

Other wallets don’t tell you anything except that the person using them is neat and organized, with the slim money pocket holding some cash, two cards, a driver’s license, and maybe an insurance card.

Aside from preventing other people from performing a quick personality check on you when you pull out your wallet in the grocery store, there’s another reason to be careful about what you keep in your wallet: Around 300,000 wallets are stolen every year in the United States, and many more wallets are lost. Wallets give a thief an easy way to steal a person’s identity, especially if the wallet contains personal information like a Social Security card.

To make sure a lost wallet won’t land you in a pile of trouble, here’s a list of things you shouldn’t keep in your wallet:

• Personal ID, other than a driver’s license. Social Security cards, birth certificates and passports are all safer at home than carried along wherever you go.

• Blank checks. Even if these aren’t signed, a thief can still easily use a check. Debit card transactions can be more easily canceled than a check.

• Spare keys. If there’s any way for a thief to find out your address based on your wallet, and there’s a spare key to your house inside…

Password lists. These are worth having, but not in your wallet, which is not safe enough for sensitive information.

• Receipts. A thief can technically use these to help him get more information about your accounts.
