Getting married after Chanuka? Inquire about our early bird special! Highly endorsed by leading rabbanim

A burbling creek meandering through the woods. Soft breeze whispering through the leaves, chittering birds swooping by, the back and forth sigh of a hammock. Lapping water tumbling over stone, swirling and eddying and rushing on. The faint hum of dragonflies. The piercing call of a faraway meadow lark. The surreal early morning light gradually giving way to the yellows, oranges and pinks of sunrise. A small branch snaps as a bird rises from a nearby thicket, soaring through the foliage and rising into the lightening sky.

(Inbox, Issue 102) In your Sukkos issue was a correspondence in which the writer expressed interest in the source of the fact that a rope was tied to the foot of the Kohen Gadol so he could be removed from the Kodesh Hakodashim in the event that he died. The source is the Zohar (3:67 and 3:102). Eluzer Brieger Yeshiva Torah Vodaas

ENHANCED OUR YOM TOV

(Re: Easy Elegance, Issue 102) The table settings you presented were so easy to pull off and so beautiful! We incorporated some of the ideas, and our table was truly the nicest noi sukkah we could have made. It beautified the seudos and the sukkah and definitely enhanced our yom tov by allowing us much less time at the sink. Thank you for the great ideas! Y.G.

FOOD FAVES

(Re: Oldies, But Oh Such Goodies, Issue 102) Thank you so much for the fish recipes (the Spiralized Crunchies Salmon was really a hit in my home, though I confess I took some shortcuts) and for the compilation of old favorites. How interesting it was for me to see that three of the recipes you included are actually regulars on my yom tov menu by now. The Boro Park View recipes truly star in my kitchen. Thank you! Food Fan

(Your Voice, Issue 102) Dear G.R., I read your letter in which you propose that schools model their regular schedule after the inconsistent and inadequate schooling of the days of the lockdown. Since you’d like to have leisurely, unrushed mornings, ‫בס“ד‬ plus free nights with no homework, and you feel that school should not take up such a great part of a student’s life, may ‫בס“ד‬ I suggest homeschooling? It will allow you to set your own schedule and teach the kids as much or as little as you wish. ‫בס“ד‬ I think most of us have gained a newfound appreciation of the structure and routine regular school affords, something that was glaringly missing when school was out. What I have learned from COVID-19 is to be grateful to the educators and hanhalos of the wonderful schools for the education and framework of structure they provide for our children who thrive on it. RESERVATIONS ALWAYS RECOMMENDED

(Re: Excursions Supplement, Issue 102) Thank you for the beautiful Excursions compilation. We look out for it every yom tov, and we’re so pleased time and again when you deliver this beautiful resource. I want to remind all readers that now more than ever it’s always a good idea to make reservations if they have that option prior to visiting. It can save you waiting time and the disappointment of arriving at a place and not being able to enter. C.W.

A BEAUTIFIED SUKKAH

(Re: Floral Focal Wall, Issue 100) Thank you so much for your amazing magazine. I made the floral runner in my sukkah and got lots of compliments. M.W.

YOUR VOICE A LITTLE BREAK, PLEASE

Now that the back-to-school yom tov hecticness is over, I thought it was finally time to take a deep breath and fall into the wonder of routine, and what do I know? My kids are coming home with new requests for supplies! This is after I spent a whole lot of money and a whole lot of time purchasing all the supplies to the exact specification just a few weeks ago. One teacher wants an 8-pocket folder instead of the 4-pocket folder we already purchased, and the other one wants a notebook that’s an inch smaller. The pink highlighter isn’t good for some reason; now we need a green one. Now I’m just reading these notes, slightly baffled and not very pleased. Perhaps if a teacher sees no choice but to change or add on items needed for school at this point, she should have the school purchase it so that we and our pockets can get a little break? F.B.

PARSHAS NOACH A Pedagogue of Priorities

The parsha begins with a description of Noach: “Noach ish tzaddik tamim hayah b’dorosav” (Bereishis 6:9). It seems that the pasuk would read the same without the word “ish.” What information would be missing had the word been omitted?

WHEN REB YISROEL SALANTER was a widower, he lived in Kovno at the home of a wealthy Yid. At one point, one of the family members noticed that Reb Yisroel used very little water when he washed his hands for netilas yadayim before eating. He used a mere revi’is of water, despite the fact that a large bucketful was always prepared for him. This was intriguing. After all, the master of mussar was known to be careful with every nuance of halacha. Mustering his courage, the wealthy host approached the Rosh Yeshivah and asked about his curious behavior. “Doesn’t the halacha state that it is preferable to wash one’s hands with an abundance of water?” “It’s simple,” Reb Yisroel replied without missing a beat. “Your house is located at the top of the hill, and the well is down at the bottom. This means that the maid needs to go back and forth a couple of times when she draws water. The maid isn’t young, and the load is hard for her.” Reb Yisroel concluded: “Perhaps it is a hiddur to wash hands with plenty of water, but it isn’t a hiddur to perform a mitzvah at the expense of another person’s broken back!”

* * * * * On another occasion, Reb Yisroel Salanter was staying in a small town for Shabbos. A close talmid who lived there very much wanted to host his Rebbe and invited him to be his guest for the Friday night seudah. Reb Yisroel made his inquiries and learned that this was a home he could trust. Every last detail of kashrus was upheld, and the cook was an

ehrliche elderly widow. The seudah was typically enriched by divrei Torah and hearty zemiros. Reb Yisroel accepted the invitation, but made one condition: the meal should not take very long. This was a challenging request for the talmid to fulfill as he took pride in his spiritually rich Shabbos seudos that stretched far into the night. Still, he would not relinquish the honor of hosting his Rebbe. He happily prepared for his special guest. The seudah began right after davening. Sure enough, one course after the other was brought to the table, with less time for singing and less delving into Torah thoughts than usual. Reb Yisroel’s wish was fulfilled, and before long, the mayim acharonim was brought to the table. The host could not contain his curiosity any longer and blurted out, “Is there something wrong with my seudah that the Rebbe wished it to be this quick?” Rather than reply, Reb Yisroel asked him to call over the elderly cook. He turned to the woman and said, “I ask your forgiveness if my schedule forced you to rush with the serving in the kitchen.” “Just the opposite!” the woman exclaimed. “The Rebbe should really be our guest every week! Every Shabbos the seudos here take such a long time, and I must wait up until late into the night, fighting my tiredness as I serve. This week, for a change, the seudah was over so soon, and I can already go home and rest my weary bones.” Reb Yisroel did not need to explain much. “You see, hav-

* * * * * Indeed, what can be more beautiful than putting our entire heart and soul into the mitzvos we do? Every extra ounce of energy invested and every extra minute we devote is precious… but not when it comes at the expense of the people around us! This is the praise the Torah hints at when describing the gadlus of Noach. First, the Torah says he was an “ish” – he was a mentsch, with good middos and concern for others. Only afterward is he described as a “tzaddik tamim.”

CHAPTER 27 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi’s spy overhears the conversation Yechiel has with the sultan’s physician, and Yechiel is severely reprimanded and threatened, after which he impresses on the physician that Shabbesai Tzvi will use no force against the sultan. The news of Shabbesai Tzvi’s kingship reaches all corners of Europe, and then Pulichev, and Rav Shloime tells his congregants to exercise patience until the truth comes to light.

O

n Sunday morning, a water carrier named Leizer Knobel made his rounds. As he trudged through the street, staggering under the weight of the two enormous pails of water suspended from the yoke across his bent shoulders, the local priest, an apostate Jew named Father Krzysztof Sudvolych, came up beside him. “Leizer, Leizer,” said the priest, “it pains me to see you working so hard, and all for a meager handful of coins.” “Thank you for your sympathy.” “I want to help you, Leizer. I really do.” “Would you like to carry the water for a while? I could use a break.” “The help I’m offering is much better.” “Why don’t you leave me alone?” said Leizer, and he continued walking. “I can take you out of this miserable existence,” said the priest. “Why do you need this difficult religion and all the suffering it brings with it? Just let me baptize you, and your family as well, and I will assure you a comfortable living. You won’t have to lug these pails anymore.”

52

The Boro Park View

“Just go away.” “Leizer, I’m your friend. If you get baptized, your friends may do so as well. You’re not the only one who’s suffering. There will be a nice reward in it for you. So, Leizer, what do you say?” A crowd had gathered around them, Jews on one side of the street and Polish peasants on the other side. Leizer lowered his pails gingerly onto the ground without spilling a drop of water. Then he straightened up to his full height and turned to face the priest. “You made a big mistake, Mattis,” he said. “Don’t call me that,” said the priest. “I’m not Mattis anymore. I’m Father Krzysztof Sudvolych. I demand you address me with respect. If you address me again as Mattis, there will be consequences.” “I’m not afraid of you, Mattis. Your days are numbered.” “Oh, really?” “Yes! Moshiach is here. Everyone knows about it. He appeared in Turkey, and every day he’s growing stronger. Soon we will have the upper hand, and you will beg us for mercy. You’ll want to become Mattis again, but it will be too

late. You will get what you deserve. All of our enemies will!” The peasants at the side of the road became agitated. “Father, is that true?” shouted a husky man in overalls. “Has the Messiah come to the Jews instead of to us?” “Will the Jews take revenge on us?” asked an old woman. “Nah, don’t worry about it,” said the priest. “I’ve heard these ridiculous rumors. It’s just a madman’s delusions.” “Are you sure, Father?” the old woman persisted. “Can you promise that the Jews will not harm us?” The priest hesitated for a moment. “Absolutely sure,” he said. “You have my solemn promise.” His hesitation, however, had not gone unnoticed. The peasants milled about, grumbling their uncertain reassurances to one another. “Don’t believe the priest,” called out a Jewish man. “Everyone is talking about it, from Amsterdam to Constantinople to Cairo to Warsaw. It’s real. We’ve waited for him for so many hundreds of years, and now, at last, he’s here. You won’t be persecuting us anymore. Our time has come.” Before long, the peasants and the Jewish bystanders were shouting at one another, wielding staves and canes. It seemed that a riot was on the verge of erupting. At that moment, Rav Shloime came around the corner, and the shouting subsided. “Rabbi, is it true?” said the husky peasant. “Leizer claims that the Messiah has come to the Jews. Is it true?” “I see,” said Rav Shloime. “This is

what the shouting was about, isn’t it?” ”It is,” said the priest. “This insolent water carrier threatened these good Christians with revenge. So tell them that it’s all a pack of lies.” “I can’t say that,” said Rav Shloime, addressing the glowering peasants. “But I can’t say that it’s true either. Time will tell. Either way, no one is going to take revenge. If this man is indeed the true Messiah, he will bring love and peace to the world, not hatred and violence. In the meantime, if we all get along, if we are all kind to one another, we will be fine.” Rav Shloime’s gentle words pacified the crowd, and they went on their way. The priest walked away with his head bowed. Leizer picked up his pails of water and continued on his rounds. When Rav Shloime came home, he found Rebbetzin Bracha holding a letter in her hand with a look of deep concern on her face. “What happened?” he said. “Is it bad news?” “It may be,” she said. “It’s a letter from Aharon in Hamburg.” Rav Shloime loved his stepson, and even the hint of peril sent shivers through his heart. “Has something happened?” he said. “Tell me.” “I’ll read the part that concerns me,” she said. “‘All of Hamburg is talking about Shabbesai Tzvi. The letters come to the Portuguese Sinagoga, and they’re read aloud on Shabbos. My friends and I have been praying there often so that we can hear the letters. They’re astonishing! We’re thinking of traveling to Turkey to be there when he takes the crown from the sultan and places it on his own head. We’ll be among the first Ashkenazim to join Moshiach. He’ll embrace us and give us special attention. What an honor that will be! What a privilege! We miss you, and we’ll be sure to stop in Pulichev on the way to Turkey. But we won’t delay for long!’” Rebbetzin Bracha put down the letter and stared at her husband. “I’m worried,” she said. “What should we do?” Rav Shloime sighed. “I’ll go to Hamburg.” * * * * *

Aharon Surkis stepped out of his handsome carriage in a staging area off the central marketplace of Hamburg. He gave the driver permission for some personal time as long as he would be back at his post in fifteen minutes. Then he walked to the edge of the marketplace where a crowd was gathering. He did not have to wait long. The hoofbeats of the horses and the excited barking of the dogs heralded the arrival of the great coach well before it turned the corner and came into view. The coach came to a stop near the crowd, and the travel-worn passengers stumbled out. Rav Shloime Strasbourg was the last to emerge. He caught sight of Aharon and opened his arms wide. Aharon hurried forward, and the two men embraced for a few long moments without speaking a word. “You’re looking well, Aharon,” said Rav Shloime at last. “How are Yocheved and the children?” “They’re all wonderful, and you’re looking very fit as well. How is Mother?” “She’s well. Her worst problem is that she misses you.” Aharon nodded. “How was your journey?” Rav Shloime shrugged. “As could be expected. I’ll need a day or two to rest.” “Mother was vague about the purpose of your trip.” “First and foremost, I came to see you.” Aharon beamed with pleasure. “I miss you very much,” he said. “And we miss you. I’d also like to speak with some of the rabbis I met here last time. I have a number of topics to discuss with them.” “Well, the first rabbi you have to meet is Rav Yaakov Sasportas. He was very

excited when he heard you were coming. He wants to meet with you right away. He says it’s important.” “Oh … um … that’s interesting.” Aharon smiled. “Do you even know who he is?” Rav Shloime shook his head. “I heard the name, but I know nothing else. Was he here when we visited four years ago?” “No. He just arrived recently from Amsterdam. I’ll tell you all about him later. Let’s get into the carriage. Yocheved and the children are waiting. They’re very excited, except for little Asher. He’s barely a year old. But Ephraim is six and Eidel is four. They don’t remember you, but we read them

your letters all the time, and they can’t wait to see you.” “Let’s stop at a shop on the way home. I want to buy some sweets for the children. I couldn’t very well bring sweets all the way from home.” The next few hours were devoted to the family. Rav Shloime bounced little Asher on his lap, while the other children peppered him with questions. At Yocheved’s prompting, they showed off the prayers, blessings, songs and stories she had taught them, and they beamed with pleasure when their grandfather rewarded them with delicious sweets. Then Rav Shloime captivated them with a humorous story about their mother’s

father. After a while, Yocheved stood up and announced that it was bedtime, and the children followed her reluctantly. Rav Shloime and Aharon were left alone. “So tell me about Rav Yaakov Sasportas,” said Rav Shloime. “First of all, how old is he?” “I’m not sure. I would say mid-fifties, give or take a few years.” “Was he born in Amsterdam?” “No. He was born in Morocco. Rav Yaakov is a brilliant Torah scholar, an expert in Chumash, Talmud, Shulchan Aruch and Kabbalah. He was a rabbi in Morocco for a number of years, but then he experienced difficulties with the au-

thorities and had to flee.” “What sort of difficulties?” “I don’t know. If it’s important I can make inquiries.” Rav Shloime brushed off the offer. “It’s not important. We are a people in exile. Almost everyone has had problems with the authorities at one time or another. Go on. Where did he go after he fled Morocco?” “The place most Sefardic refugees seek. Amsterdam, of course.” “Of course. Did he have a position there?” “As far as I know, he did not become an official rabbi. He didn’t have any rabbinic duties, but the Sefardic com-

munity supported him and relied on him often for his knowledge and his expertise.” “How long was he there?” “I’m not sure exactly. Between fifteen and twenty years. I think seventeen years. Until two years ago.” “And then he came to Hamburg?” “Actually not. The Sefardic community was just beginning to organize, and they invited him to be their first rabbi.” “So why did he leave? What happened?” “An epidemic. He and his family fled to Hamburg in November of last year. They were put in quarantine for six weeks and then released. He decided to

stay in Hamburg. His situation here is similar to his situation in Amsterdam. The community has great respect for him and supports him. He’s one of the unofficial leaders of the community. He also corresponds with the rabbis of major Sefardic communities, and his influence is strong. They look to him for guidance. He’s an important man.” “And do you know why he wants to speak with me?” “I suspect it has something to do with Shabbesai Tzvi. Rav Yaakov is one of Shabbesai Tzvi’s most influential opponents.” To be continued…

COVID-19 Boosters for Some New Yorkers, While Vaccines for Kids Five and Up May Be Ready Soon Hoping to win the next battle in the ongoing war on COVID-19, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has issued the latest directives on booster shots, officially endorsing the Centers for Disease Control’s recommendation for a third vaccination for eligible individuals. As of September 24, those who received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine are now eligible for free booster shots, as long as six months have passed since they completed their initial vaccine series. The state’s vaccine website says that individuals over 65, those between the ages of 50 and 64 with underlying medical conditions, and those living in long-term care settings should get booster shots. Individuals ages 18 to 49 with underlying medical conditions, and first responders, teachers, health care workers and grocery store workers who are between 18 and 64, are among those who are also eligible for the Pfizer COVID-19 booster. To date, boosters are only available to those who initially received the Pfizer vaccine series. NBC News reported that the CDC has yet to consider boosters for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines and whether mixing and matching vaccinations is recommended. Meanwhile, with coronavirus rates exploding in younger children, Pfizer has submitted trial data for vaccinating fiveto eleven-year-olds and is expected to request an emergency authorization as soon as late October. Reuters reported that the Food and Drug Administration has already said that it would fast-track a review of the vaccine for the new age group, potentially completing it within weeks, instead of months. It took approximately one month for the Pfizer vaccine to be approved for twelve- to fifteen-year-olds, and the vaccine is already being tested on two other age groups — two- to five-year-olds and babies ages six months to two years. While children typically do not contract severe cases of COVID-19, they can spread the virus to

other more vulnerable individuals. Infection rates in children climbed to their highest rates ever in early September, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, and with schools now open nationwide, vaccinating more children could prevent another spike in positive cases.

With Cuomo Gone, LaGuardia AirTrain Project Up in Air Taking aim squarely at one of his former rival’s pet projects, Mayor Bill de Blasio added his voice to the growing chorus of elected officials questioning the wisdom of Andrew Cuomo’s $2.1 billion LaGuardia AirTrain project. Speaking at a Thursday press conference, de Blasio minced no words as he announced his plans for a complete assessment of the proposed monorail connecting the Queens airport with the Willets Point train station, providing air travelers with a direct route into Manhattan. “We were dealing with an aberrant situation — a governor who would not work with anyone, who created fear, who rushed projects through whether good or bad,” said de Blasio. “Now we get a chance to look at this thing in the clear light of day, where, actually, there is a more mature, humane environment, where we can look at this and decide on the merits — does it make sense?” With Cuomo no longer in Albany, de Blasio said that New York had an opportunity to take an objective look at the plans

and decide if the project should go ahead, be modified or tabled. According to the New York Post, Cuomo had ignored opposition to the project from transit advocates and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials and continued pushing the plan. Local lawmakers have been expressing their reservations about the project since a disgraced Cuomo left Albany this summer. Governor Kathy Hochul has said she is consulting with the Port Authority and local elected officials about the AirTrain plans. “My personal view on the AirTrain is that this is something that can be examined in terms of our priorities right now,” said Hochul. “I need to make sure we have the resources.”

Service With a Smile as NYPD Launches Community Greeter Program Hoping to improve relations with those they serve, the NYPD is placing community guides in its precincts to welcome visitors and create a friendlier environment for the public. Pix 11 reported that the program was announced last Thursday and will have the guides stepping in to interface with the public, giving desk sergeants the ability to focus on other matters. The NYPD is hiring community guides who live locally, with a minimum of 180 guides to be stationed within precincts to greet visitors and provide timely assistance. Mayor Bill de Blasio noted that building bonds between police and the communities they serve is an essential part of keeping crime rates low. NYPD Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said that the program was launched in response to complaints from people who found visiting their local precincts a daunting experience, with some saying that they were not treated courteously or greeted in a timely fashion, reported AM New York Metro. “This position is proof of the NYPD striving for excellence in the area of customer service,” said Holmes. Bronx resident Rebecca Smith is a community guide who has worked previously at her local precinct. She sent the application for the community guide position to her mother and sister, both of whom have begun training at the police academy. Understanding that people can be intimidated by uniformed officers, Smith said she appreciates the need to have a friendly face welcoming people to the precinct. Community guides will be working weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to greeting visitors, they will also assist them with obtaining accident reports, completing documentation, and escorting them to other areas of the station house.

Item Limits Back at Costco Costco shoppers may find their carts a little less full on their next warehouse run now that the mega-merchandiser is introducing purchase limits on certain high-demand items. CNBC reported that shipping delays and driver shortages have made it difficult for the retailer to keep essential items, including bottled water, cleaning supplies, paper towels and toilet paper, in stock. Chief financial officer Richard Galanti said that while there is no actual shortage of merchandise, two- to three-week delivery delays, port delays, container shortages, COVID-19 cases, raw materials costs and other factors have sparked the need for the limits. As of last Thursday, Costco had yet to specify exactly how many of each item customers would be allowed to purchase. Hoping to ensure a steady supply of affected items, Costco has been placing its orders ahead of its usual schedule and has chartered three ships, each of which can carry 800 to 1,000 containers, to transport goods between the Far East and the United States and Canada. Shortages of some private label Costco items had been reported as far back as August. Despite the delays, Galanti said that the store is seeing strong sales in jewelry, pharmacy, furniture and sporting goods, with several rings in the $100,000 price range sold during the store’s latest fiscal quarter. While the product limits are unrelated to shortages, a CNN report warned that the policy could have customers racing to stores to stock up. “Over the past two years, people have become conditioned to respond with panic buying whenever they learn of some impending lockdown or shortage,” said Steven Taylor, a professor at University of British Columbia’s psychiatric department. “And so far, efforts by community leaders have been ineffective in controlling episodes of panic buying. Our leaders typically say something like, ‘Don’t panic! There is enough toilet paper!’ This message backfires because it pairs, in the minds of shoppers, toilet paper and panic.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX RECAP: Ariella

has a long conversation with Mrs. Reiness, the speech therapist, about her family situation, her hoarseness and her ADHD. Osher studies the old photo and realizes that it’s of Reb Elazar as a bachur.

he next afternoon, Ariella needed to get out again; she felt the walls of the small room closing in on her, and she needed to get out. She wondered if she should approach the Reiness home again. Mrs. Reiness had made an excellent impression on her. But what kind of chinuch was Osher getting in her home? What was the learning level of her husband’s yeshivah? Ariella needed to observe the place from a closer vantage point and check out the other students. But how many hours could she spend wandering around the area without Osher being any the wiser? She walked out of her room and locked the door, unsure where she was headed. She nearly bumped into Miriam, who was holding a large garbage bag. “Are you going out?” Miriam asked as she opened the door to her house. “Yes.” “Where to?” “I’m not sure yet.” Ariella smiled. “Do you want to come with me to the shuk?” “The Arab market? In the Old City?” “Yes,” Miriam said. “I buy my vegetables there, and we ma’aser them at home. There’s no problem this year, you know, since it’s not shemittah.” “Aren’t you afraid?” “No. There’s no animosity there. At least not any that you can see.” “And your kids? Are you taking them with you?” “My neighbor Orit will be watching them. We trade off; I watch her children when she goes to

the shuk. So, do you want to come?” “Yes, why not? I’m sure it’ll be nice. Thanks.” They set out, and Ariella was surprised to find that she was already familiar with the streets. It wasn’t the area of Sarah Reiness’s clinic, but they did walk toward the sea, and she knew she was getting closer to Osher. Then Miriam turned left, in the opposite direction of the Reinesses’ home, and Ariella felt a mix of relief and disappointment rising in her throat. They would not be passing Osher’s yeshivah. Good. Too bad. “So it’s you again,” a voice declared, and Ariella found herself facing the woman who had been nice to her the day before, when she’d been scouting around. “Still looking for something?” Miriam, who had walked a few steps ahead, stopped and waited, without looking back. “Excuse me, I’m in a hurry,” Ariella said, motioning ahead. “My friend is waiting for me.” “She’s not your friend,” the woman said in a quiet tone. “And you don’t enjoy being with her. You’re different from her.” Ariella was too stunned to utter a word; she just continued walking. When she reached Miriam, she could not help but turn around to look back. The woman was still standing near the gate of her well-tended home, smiling at her somewhat sorrowfully. “Go and figure people out,” Ariella blurted. Miriam either didn’t hear her or preferred to ignore the remark, and she made no mention of Ariella’s encounter with the woman. Indeed, she and Miriam were very different. “If we make another left here, we’ll get to the Acco Prison,” Miriam said. “Do you want to stop to take a look?” “Not now.” “Good, because I thought you were expecting me to take you on a walking tour of the area, and I really don’t have time for that now. So let’s take the shorter route to the shuk.” “No problem,” Ariella said. Then she added, “But Miriam, if you don’t have time for something, don’t suggest it. What would you have done if I’d have said that I did want to go?” Miriam smiled but didn’t answer. “We’ll be getting to the shuk in a minute,” she said a few moments later. “You see that ancient lighthouse there, behind those houses? If we have time afterward, we can come back through the port and get a closer view. It’s beautiful.” She stopped. “Wait, you saw it yesterday, didn’t you?” “No, I didn’t.” “But you were in this area yesterday.” “I didn’t get all the way here,” Ariella said tersely. “I was was there, on the right.” “In the new area? What were you looking for there? You asked so much about where the new wall finishes and where the old wall starts, that I was sure you were going to the old port area…” “I didn’t get there in the end. I was mostly in the middle area, where the ancient wall begins.” Miriam looked at her, puzzled, and then said, “Well, if that’s the case, we have to get our shopping done quickly

so we can go to the ancient port. You’ve been in Acco for nearly four days now, and you weren’t there yet?” “But if you don’t have time, Miriam, we don’t have to. It’s okay; I can see the port and the lighthouse a different day.” “You know what — let’s go to the shuk, and then we’ll see what you prefer: a colorful, long walk through the shuk, or a quick visit and then a guided tour of the ancient Acco port area.” Soon they reached the market. Unidentifiable smells, a babble of voices in Arabic, running water on the cracked streets, and cats darting everywhere were Ariella’s first impression. Then she noticed the colorful stalls, the swaying umbrellas offered for sale, as well as the pocketbooks and toys that were clearly made in China. She smiled to herself when a young Arab woman called to her from a jewelry stall, “Hey, lady, this jewelry is excellent: It’s gold-plated, doesn’t get black, and can go into water, too!” Ariella also noticed other Jewish women who had come to shop, and then realized that Miriam was busy filling bags with all kinds of vegetables. “The produce here is really k’dai,” she was saying. “It’s great quality, fresh and cheap.” But Ariella was too distracted to start filling her bag with peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. Instead, she bought some souvenirs: a colorful wooden flute for her mother; an odd-shaped alarm clock for her father; and some cute porcelain dolls for her sisters. For herself, she chose a small stone lighthouse, with black and white stripes. “Our lighthouse,” Miriam said with a smile when she saw Ariella’s choice. “I hope that the miniature one makes you want to see the original even more.” Finally done with their shopping, they set out for the old port, which was

bustling with people and heavy with the odor of fish and salt. Soon they reached the lighthouse. “It really is beautiful,” Ariella remarked, tipping her head back to gaze upward. “It was once active,” Miriam said, her voice uncharacteristically dreamy. “It used to light up shipping routes for all the ships that came to Eretz Yisroel. Acco was once a busy city. But things have changed, and we try to live with it the way it is now.” “To illuminate even without a lighthouse,” Ariella said with a chuckle. They walked together along the wall, heading for home. “Nice place, isn’t it?” Miriam asked. “The shuk? Very.” Ariella smiled. “Thanks for taking me.”

“She’s not your friend,” the woman said in a quiet tone. “And you don’t enjoy being with her. You’re different from her.” Miriam’s smile widened. “And what do you say about Acco in general?” “It’s really a charming city,” Ariella replied honestly. “There’s a special quality of life here that doesn’t exist in the center of the country. Quiet, tranquility…” “Yes, I like the quiet.” “And with little kids, baruch Hashem, you probably don’t get much of that.” “Sometimes, when they are sleeping, I do,” Miriam answered. “Not much, because besides the kitchen — you didn’t really see my whole apartment, right? — we only have a large hallway, where we eat our Shabbos meals, and another bedroom, divided into two, which we share with the kids.”

“Wow, that’s very crowded.” “Right. So even when the kids are sleeping, I’m right next to them. They get up every time I make a cup of coffee or speak on the phone…” Ariella was quiet for a long moment, and then she looked at Miriam out of the corner of her eye. “And until I came, you had the second room, huh?” “Yes. We bought the apartment like this, and we thought it would be a good source of income. But how many people come to stay in Acco? It was more profitable when I was able to work there in the evenings. It was a great setup, because I could hear the children crying from the window when they would wake up.” “So it was probably very convenient for you,” Ariella said. Yes, she knew just how clearly voices could carry from window to window. “It really was. And it was definitely more worth it than renting out the room.” She surely didn’t mean to be offensive. She was just saying the truth. Candidly. And with candid people, you can respond the same way. “So, we made up five days, and I’m supposed to leave tomorrow evening, b’ezras Hashem.” And surely Miriam would say, “No, it’s not so urgent — you can stay a few more days…” “Right. Are you going back to Bnei Brak? Did you finish what you wanted to do in Acco?” “I didn’t finish, but I’ll be okay, b’ezras Hashem.” Miriam didn’t ask how. “You do look like the type who just manages things well.” Ariella smiled thinly. “Thanks… So, tomorrow evening you can start working in the room again. After I leave.” It’s not nice to be cynical, she chided herself. Stop it! “Right. Someone asked me to do a

I didn’t get a chance to look at the picture again, because right after Aharon left, the door opened and Reb Elazar came in. “Hi, Osher. How’s it going?” I didn’t want to ask him about the picture that was under my pillow, because I didn’t think it was polite for me to have taken it to my room. Was it considered stealing? I hadn’t thought of that. When he would go back downstairs, I’d return the picture. “Have you spoken to your parents, Osher? Did you let them know that you’re home from the hospital?” “No. I have no patience to call.” “So, do you want me to do it for you?” I looked at him. The idea wasn’t a bad one, except that I was afraid it might lead to a steady connection between him and my parents, which I did not want. I didn’t want them to start calling him and asking how I was behaving, and what was doing, and whether or not I was improving, and that he should tell me to come back home. “What do you want to tell them?” I sat down on my bed. I didn’t want him near the pillow, so I lifted the blanket and made room for him on the other side. “You can sit, Rebbi.” He smiled at me. “Thanks, Osher,” he said as he sat down. “I want to tell them that you were released, and that the fox was caught and is in quarantine as they wait for the results of its test for rabies. Is it okay with you if I tell them that?” I saw from his smile that he wasn’t really serious about asking for my permission, and that if I wasn’t going to call my parents, then he would. “And that’s it?” I asked. “Just that. Okay, look, if your father asks me, ‘How is he doing in general?’ you don’t expect me to remain silent, do you?” “So what will you say?” He smiled and patted me on the shoulder. “Do you not trust me, Osher?” “I don’t trust anyone,” I said, and immediately realized that this was chutzpah. “Well, I do trust you, but…” I scratched the edge of my blanket with a fingernail. “But I don’t want you to talk to them too much.” “I’ll speak to them about whatever is necessary, but nothing more than that, okay?” “Okay. Can you speak to them here, next to me?” “Deal.” He patted me on the shoulder again, took out his phone, and asked me for the number. I gave him my father’s cell number, not the house phone. I was afraid that Shoshi or Lakey would pick up at home, and I certainly didn’t want that. Rabbi Reiness dialed, paused and then spoke. “Hello, Rabbi Erenbaum? This is Elazar Reiness, from Acco.” To be continued…

hough there is barely time for costume change in the performance that is everyday life, the Yiddishe mother stars in so many roles. She is the main character and chief builder in the construction of her bayis ne’eman, the building of her home and hearth. Now the spotlight is on her! The curtain has been pulled open, and her swinging back to routine after a magnificent show of yom tov splendor has once again revealed the power of the Yiddishe mamme! Behind the Scenes In a Yiddishe home, the stage is always set and the show must always go on. Nighttime and daytime, summertime and wintertime. No matter if there are appointments dotting her calendar or if she is in the thick of a hectic simcha season. There are schedules and siyumim and snacks and uniforms and appointments to prepare and orchestrate. Nothing occurs by happenstance, and yes, mother dear, you deserve cheers and resounding applause because many, many hours of sweat, tears and toil are invested in your beautiful and lifegiving mission. Mothers were tasked with an indescribable responsibility: raising the future generation and keeping the embers — the spirit of Torah and mesorah — alive. We must not underestimate the magnitude of our achrayus! Now that a new year has arrived, it is incumbent upon us to take care of our well-being so that we can be healthy mothers to our precious kinderlech. Here’s how!

Mommy Time Brandish your broom, beat me up with your beaters, and dust my words with a rag if you will, but I will share my wish to abolish the culture of “me time,” which smacks of a “me-first” mentality, and present instead “mommy time,” which is on a totally different and more exalted level. It is not the end-goal, but rather the means to attain our goal. It is not to run away from our responsibilities, but rather to gather strength to fulfill our responsibilities to the utmost. And we have to remember to always defer to the authority of our

Father in Heaven and His emissaries, because that, in essence, is our main role in the show. That’s why it’s not “me time”; it’s “mommy time.” Time to recharge so that we can be the best mommy in the world.

1, 2, 3 — Routine! Oh! The charm of blessed routine. Once we establish them, our entire family will only stand to gain. Read about the various routines that we can fix into our daily schedule, and it might end up being just the energy booster you need. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Would you ever even dare to harbor such evil thoughts as to send a kid off to school or cheder without breakfast? Never, ever, ever! Mommy, please tell: How can you skip this prime meal of the day that will give you proper nourishment and strength to tackle your heavy workload? Take a minute or two to toss together a salad. Blend yourself a delightful smoothie. A car drives with gasoline, a machine operates by battery or recharge, and a Yiddishe mother needs healthful food to function and thrive. TEHILLIM TREASURES: Can anything compare to the reassuring Presence of our dear Father in our daily lives? As Yiddishe mothers, we understand that everything is dependent on His will. Carve out for yourself some Tehillim or davening time. Perhaps say the Tehillim shel yom or set a specific time when you will talk to your Father, and He will surely answer your heartfelt prayers!

Two Mommies Share Faigy’s Story: It was just a bottle of paint. But was it more? Twenty or so women assemble around the table. Paint splashes, brushes swish against the canvas. The soothing lilt of music provides a backdrop of tranquility, and all is awash in the world of color and hue. They call it a paint party. Take a canvas, dabble with some colors, add a brushstroke here and there to balance symmetry and shading, and a masterful painting will emerge. Well, not quite the art of Rembrandt or Van Gogh, perhaps, but a piece of art that’s a testament to each participant’s very own unique style and creativity. There is Sury. Her first swirl is still tentative, in hues of gray and brown. Is it meant to convey her stress and anxiety? Does it tell the story of her worries of financial struggles and a special-needs child that consume her every waking moment? But then her taut facial expression relaxes, and after a

There is nothing like physical movement to rev you up. Move right, move left, and feel the powerful jolt in all of your muscles. It lifts the mood, releases endorphins, and does wonders for overall health and wellbeing. It is wise to have a fixed time for walking/exercising (right after the school buses leave and you wave your last goodbye, or an hour after suppertime to give you the boost you need to attack those dishes in the sink, etc.), and a good walking partner may serve a dual purpose as you get your walking done while talking and spending time with a friend.

A MOVE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION:

POWER NAP: Shut your eyes, inhale and exhale, and poof! You’re off on that elusive cloud called dreamland. There’s nothing, but nothing, as effective as a power nap. Somehow, some way, those few blissful moments of R&R restore your energy and put you in a rejuvenated state of mind. This will help you greet your kids with a smile and renewed spirits. TREAT YOURSELF: Care for a coffee? Perhaps drink it together with a chocolate bar or the newest issue of your favorite magazine. It’s okay to indulge yourself with things that perk up your mood. That will give you the adrenaline to tend to that load of laundry or prepare a mouthwatering and healthy supper for your family.

Hobby Hour So, what exhilarates your spirit and puts a bounce to your step? Research indicates that there are biological changes in our body when we are happy and content: Our airways expand, and we inhale lungfuls of fresh oxy-

while, her picture explodes with vibrant color and optimism. There is Etty, a brand-new young bubby who is juggling a lively brood of her own while hosting and pampering a glowing (and sometimes weepy) first-time mother. It appears as if she will fall asleep before her painting even begins to take shape, but the camaraderie and magic of this evening perk her up. She schmoozes as she outlines a beautiful flower and cannot stop saying, “Wow. This is the best thing I’ve done for myself in a long while!” Then there is Chava, who is taking care of her frail, elderly mother. There’s Malka, who’s always on the periphery of every park-bench conversation but seems to possess an artistic flair and is beaming from all the compliments coming her way. There is Esty and Hudis and Aviva, and so many others, each with her own individual struggles and triumphs. Each is relaxing and rejuvenating and gathering strength from this activity. And then there is me. With each dip of color, I marvel at the nuanced colors in the paint palette. There are various shades of each element of color. There is the delicate and the stark. The bright and the majestic. We are all different, yet all the same in our quest to fulfill our exalted duties. And such a unique evening grants us the headspace to contemplate, relax and reflect, so that we can forge on in our sacred roles in which we are all true maestros!

Toby’s Story: There were no airs or pretenses, but it was definitely a morning to remember. It was not Chanukah or any special marked date on the calendar. It was, as my classmate coined it, a “just because.” It was a balmy morning, and we all met at a waterfront park. And, oh, the oohs and aahs and laughter! We reminisced and played some good old-fashioned games. (So what if we’re turning… sh! Don’t tell! We’re all still young at heart.) So, we all gathered for the Just Because Event. And because it was a Just Because Event, there were no airs or pretenses. Some came with bulging bags of delectable pastries, some lugged bowls of tuna and egg salad, one classmate brought bagels and rolls, and some brought just themselves. I had offered to bring refreshments and spent the night before making homemade sherbet and whipping up some insanely delicious desserts. (I’m still not sure why.) So what was the end result? A rickety wooden table with an array of good, heimish food and even better heimish banter. It was a very special morning, and we promise we’ll do it again next year! But next time, I think I’ll just bring chocolate milk. Or maybe some plastic cups.

gen that gives us clarity of mind and spirit. Do you like the feeling of a paintbrush in your hand? Is an exercise CD playing in the background? Is photography up your alley? Does beading some whimsical or delicate necklaces get you excited? A hobby can be a healthy sort of escape. Dishes done, diamond art out. Bedtime was super-stressful, but ah! The thrill of a brushstroke on canvas. A project or hobby also generates a buzz of family excitement: “My mother takes the best pictures in the world,” or “This beautiful masterpiece was hand-made by my mother and will grace our sukkah walls!” Who doesn’t remember their own bubby knitting a blanket or their mother whipping up the most delectable multi-stepped dessert? Mommy, the house is quiet, and now is your time. Take out a project, relax and enjoy. * * * * *

There is no show as full of surprises as a day at the helm of a home. But when the curtains close and day turns into night, even Mother must agree that this was one show worth attending!

OVID -19 changed us, for better or for worse. That choking feeling that hit us all as the walls of our homes slowly closed in on us, leaving us with barely any standing room, is a once-in-a-century feeling. But as we acclimated, we realized (hopefully) that, hey, things we thought were so important could go, and nothing would happen. Skipping a bath, allowing finger paints in the house, blowing bubbles in the kitchen — they’re not fatal. Usually. We’ve learned to cut corners along the way and leave them snipped. In the meantime, we’ve discovered pockets of time to focus on our kids, our spouses, our own interests or — at the very least — the marathon to the finish line that suddenly seemed at least a bit more doable. Of course, there will always be those who say, “I wish I could cut corners, but I just can’t.” No problem, continue ironing underwear until there’s no Niagara spray starch left and your nozzle sprays air. Or, “I can’t have a cleaning lady; she’ll never use a Q-tip on my moldings.” Okay, then. Continue using Q-tips until Unilever runs out of them. But for the rest of us, here are some corners that others have cut to add quality to their days and make their stressful lives a bit more balanced. (And no, not ironing shirts didn’t

make it to the list because who hasn’t cut that corner yet?) Spoiler alert: Many of these cut corners are laundry-centric. Until someone invents the No-Hamper dress or Self-Launder pants, an empty hamper will remain an elusive goal that will continue to frustrate generations of housewives. I’ll be brave and start with my own. Here goes: I use aluminum pans instead of pots… very often (like, always). Most supper nights cost me a garbage bag and four or five pans.

Let’s talk cabbage pasta. The pasta gets cooked in a deep 6x9-inch foil pan. I then punch holes in the pan and let water run over the ready pasta until it’s all strained and drained. Next I sauté the cabbage and spices in the oven in a 5x7, and voila, a gourmet side dish is ready to be served! I’ll accept all “spoiled 2021 mom” slurs with dignity. Yes, I know the older generation had no such conveniences, and their garbage bags were taken out only once a week, and they never owned a 30-gallon drawstring bag (drawstrings were a luxury). But it’s a small price to pay for easy kitchen cleanup. (And I also know aluminum has some hazards. Washing multiple pots has greater hazards for me.)

No worries, I use my iron plenty... for Perler beads. Ruchy I’m out of the house at 8:00 every morning along with a large family, ka”h. I used to feel guilty about it, and so I overworked to scramble eggs each morning. Well, then I’d come home many hours later to an egg-crusted frying pan, a dirty table and full plates. Because, really, who can swallow eggs while I spray Dippity-Do onto their hair? I learned to trust the school’s breakfast. It’s called “breakfast cereal” for a reason. It’s worth it for the clean kitchen, kids who have the extra five minutes to snooze, and a mother who manages to make herself (somewhat) presentable before flying out.

Sury

908.583.6109 Call for Private Appointments!

It used to be, “Kids, clean up the playroom and come eat supper!” Then the haggling would begin: “I didn’t unpack anything,” “I can’t clean up,” “I don’t wanna,” and “I did more than her.” Well, the playroom has a door for a reason. Toys are clutter, not dirt. Once a week is enough for a major cleanup, and so on Thursdays, when the cleaning lady shows up, we make the playroom sparkle. Now the kids get supper without cleanup. On the bright side, it makes them more compliant to the “one-game” rule, where you can’t unpack more than one toy at a time. After all, it’s no fun playing in a terribly messy playroom. The knowledge that I have a cluttered room in the house used to bother me, but by now, I know that the playroom has nothing to do with me.

Chaya I’m a bit of a stickler for cleanliness, and I need my linen washed often and my bedrooms looking neat every morning. But I realized that it takes time and energy I’d rather save for my large family, ka”h.

I wash, I dry, I place it on the laundry counter, and I then invite all members of the family to help themselves. It’s not the look I always dreamed of, but I happily exchanged one dream for the other. My entire family sleeps with fuzzy quilts as opposed to real duvets. Easy wash and dry, and easy mornings. Everything gets folded in half, and my children can all do it on their own. If a kid is cold, well, we’ve got a bunch of extras, and they’re welcome to pile them on.

Leah Leah is passionate about the corner she cut. In fact, she says her life completely transformed because of it. “I used to wash my toys every week and count my Legos each evening to make sure I have them all. Now I only wash them every two weeks, and I don’t count my toys.” (I know, I know, some people truly know how to transform their life. Sigh.)

Chumy I used to dread summer laundry with the endless piles of cottons waiting to be pretreated, soaked and ironed. In fact, I’d warn my kids not to get dirty or play with sand. I think it’s an age thing, but now, when shopping for clothes, I look for practicality and non-iron first, with beauty coming in second. No pretreating white shirt dresses. I’m fine with chambrays, plaids, florals... as long as the dresses

are dark or busy and non-iron. Wash, hang, wear — that’s my motto. But no worries, I use my iron plenty… for Perler beads.

Esther During COVID-19, I bought a… laundry basket. Guess what: In all ten years of marriage I didn’t own one, for fear of temptation. I had a very strict rule of folding laundry as soon as it came out of the dryer to avoid a pile-up. Well, I bought that basket, and it hasn’t been empty since, baruch Hashem. My stomach used to churn when I noticed even a sock inside. Now I’ve progressed to leaving laundry in there overnight, and nothing ever happens.

Yachy Some of us serve buffet-style dinners; I do buffet-style laundry. I wash, I dry, I place it on the laundry counter, and I then invite all members of the family to help themselves; it’s theirs for the taking. I have this adorable quote hanging in my laundry room. It reads: Wash – 50 minutes, Dry – 40 minutes, Fold – 7–10 business days. It works like a charm. The good part is that the laundry is soon replaced with new laundry, so our buffet is usually fully loaded, and we stick to the 7 to 10 business days.

Esty Similar to the laundry buffet, we have a laundry bar. We have three baskets — colored, darks and whites. You know what you need, you know the approximate color, so go ahead, and dig into the baskets until you’re dressed for another day. As a side note: My closets are definitely neater since we implemented this system.

Rivky Remember those garlic press gadgets on our kallah housewares list? We all got married with one. Well, I’ll pass mine on to the next generation — in brand-new condition. Thank you, kosher food

Yitty I found that it’s liberating to delegate. As soon as I know a chore has nothing to do with me, I completely tune it out. For example, my cleaning lady’s job is to make the beds in my house. If she doesn’t come, well, then it just doesn’t happen. I have the same attitude as my kids do: Why make the bed if we’ll be using it again at night?

Toby I just cut! At a certain point in all the busyness that is my life, my husband and I decided, ENOUGH. We’ll cut on the stress. No use sweating the small stuff, definitely not a sparkling home and perfect clothes. Trust me, it’s a wonderful corner to cut. * * * * *

And who am I to argue? May we all be zoche to continue cutting corners for only happy occasions.

It takes

a three-dollar bottle of ketchup to see my son’s eyes light up. When I lay out ketchup, pickles, pareve hot dogs and white buns on the table, Nachman’s eyes nearly bulge. He hasn’t seen such a royal feast in his house. Ever. That day, he polished off two adult portions of dinner, the equivalent of what he usually eats for dinner over the course of a week. It’s a night of soul-searching for me. Why is my son happy with the things I don’t usually provide, and not impressed with my everyday expressions of love? Then I remember the night my nephews ate dinner with us, and I watched their eyes widen as I placed a warm loaf of homemade whole-wheat bread on the table. They ate all of it, and then asked for more. My kids’ take on my whole-wheat bread? Let’s just say they get very excited when we buy pitas. At least I like my bread. The regards came from my sister, fast and furious. The boys loved all of our homemade food. They want their mommy to make homemade whole-wheat bread “with flour on the crust,” today. But they have plenty of ketchup in the refrigerator — all the time. Now, who will win the “best Mommy” contest? That’s the fate of mothers: to do yours and then hear that the other mommy does better. So I’m plagued with indecision at night while deciding on the morrow’s menu. I believe homemade food is more nourishing, delicious and homey. But if my kids sometimes feel deprived of all the stores’ attractive delicacies? Then what? I try to strike middle ground, and we occasionally have margarine-based biscuits for snack, pizza for lunch and store-bought ice cream for Shabbos dessert. Oh, the irony that making my life easier equals happier kids. But while my most fervent wish is that my children be happy and wellprovided for, I cannot negate all of my values in favor of their whims and appetites. I resign myself to working hard on our meals, occasionally meeting disgruntled kids and being okay with it. If I had a no-fail recipe for happy kids ever after, I’d probably follow it. But I’m not absolutely sure that filling my house with junk food is that recipe, so I don’t buckle to the temptation. My children have taught me that not everything I do will be appreciated. It’s a lesson I thank them for. As I bake our weekly batch of cookies with silan, honey and oats, I pray for my children’s health in every sense. Let them be healthy in body and in spirit. Let them not ingest too much sugar, nor too much negativity or materialism. I can only do my best, and that best is where my inclinations and beliefs take me, with some consideration for where my children’s beliefs take them. This knowledge helps me shrug off the monster of all parents’ fears: Will my child rebel one day? Will he feel that he was deprived in childhood? I cannot be sure of anything, only that being forever afraid and unsure of myself does not serve any purpose. I know that I am doing my best with what I have, and that I am trying to meet my children’s needs. Okay, I’ll admit to listening at times to that cynical voice telling me that whatever I do won’t be any good. Especially when my little girl trades her whole-wheat chocolate chip cookies for your daughter’s white biscuits. But it’s okay; at least we have each other’s comfort. You’re agonizing that you don’t bake enough, and I’m wondering if I should cave to the clamor for commercial cookies. We’re in good company, you and I.

To Health! They say he drank 40 to 50 cups a day of a coffee-chocolate mixture and paid enormous amounts to have his coffee imported from overseas. His name was Voltaire, and he was a famous French writer and philosopher. While the doctor warned him that drinking so much coffee would kill him, Voltaire lived to be 83. So drink to your health!

The Very First Cup of Coffee Kaldi was a goatherd. One evening, he noticed that his goats weren’t settling down for the night, which was very unusual. After this happened several more times, he realized that this occurred whenever the goats ate the berries from a certain tree. He told others about it, and they produced a drink from the berries, finding that it kept them awake as well. And so, the cup of coffee was born. At any rate, that’s the legend told in Ethiopia, the first country to boast coffee forests.

Delete the Caffeine How do you decaffeinate coffee? The oldest way to do it involves soaking the coffee beans while they’re still green (ever knew they don’t start out brown?) and chemically extracting the caffeine. Today there are more methods for decaffeination, but there is no real way to know which one was used to create your coffee.

The Myth: Does Coffee Stunt Your Growth? Did anyone ever try to stop you from drinking coffee when you were a kid, with the warning that it would make you stop growing? Well, that myth has been disproven. Drinking coffee won’t make a child grow up to be a shorter adult. Nevertheless, too much caffeine is unhealthy for young children in other ways, so caution is still warranted.

Your Local Coffee Faves BROUGHT TO YOU BY CITY CA FÉ

The best-going coffee or coffee-based drink: ICE MOCHA Most popular coffee flavor: VANILLA Most popular coffee size: A MEDIUM CUP, WHICH IS 12 OZ.

HOT COFFEE sells more in the winter, and COLD COFFEE in the summer. In the morning hours, however, people drink mostly hot coffees, even in the summer. About 60% of our customers prefer SUGAR-FREE COFFEE . On an average day, we sell about 450 CUPS OF COFFEE ! Number of shots of espresso in most drinks: The traditional American espressobased drinks like cappuccino or latte are made from ONE TO SEVERAL SHOTS OF ESPRESSO. Typically, a small coffee has one shot, a medium coffee has one and a half shots, and a large coffee or coffee-based drink has two shots. How espresso compares to instant coffee: According to the USDA, there are

28.3 MILLIGRAMS OF CAFFEINE in every teaspoon of instant coffee, and 64 MILLIGRAM OF CAFFEINE in a shot of espresso. No matter which kind of coffee you choose, it has MANY GREAT BENEFITS ! It stimulates muscles, fights toxins and speeds the metabolism.

Quick Coffee Snippets Americans spend the most on coffee, at an average of $1,100 a year per person. Finland natives drink the most coffee anywhere. Beethoven drank only coffee made with 60 beans per cup. Science says that 70 cups of coffee can kill a person. Too much of a good thing...

Boro Park Center Celebrates Nonstop Simchas Yom Tov: From Rosh Hashana to Simchas Torah By Yehudit Garmaise

“Yom Tov is always a super special time at the Boro Park Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing (BPC), but this year, everything throughout Tishrei was even nicer: truly in the spirit of Simchas Yom Tov,” said Mrs. Raizy Pavlov, BPC’s director of recreation. "It was hard to believe we were in a rehab center because there was so much going on: nonstop entertainment, action, and fun, meaningful Yiddishe activities b’ruchnius and simcha: round the clock," said one happy resident. After what another resident described as “magnificent davening” over Rosh Hashana and beautiful Yom Tov meals: complete with delicious dishes and simanim platters, just days later, BPC staff members brought the residents everything they needed for Tashlich. For the second year in row, BPC staff brought in-house: fish swimming in bowls, decorated with seashells, netting, and other colorful, cheerful decorations that created an “under-the-sea” theme. In addition to the visual delights, musician Don Stern played heartfelt songs with lyrics from the Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur davening, and Rabbi Aron Waijsfeld said Tashlich with the residents. During Tashlich, Rabbi Waijsfeld explained that Yidden should remember that Yom Kippur is the day on which the Akeidah, “the biggest z’chus of K’lal Yisroel” took place. “Just as Avorham had to go through an ocean that the Satan had created to try to stop Avrohom from getting to the Akeidah, Jews have to go through ‘oceans’ of nisyonos and challenges on the way to the purity of teshuva,” Rabbi Waijsfeld said. “We have to remember that the difficulties we face are not put in our way to stop us, but for us to overcome: and that should be our attitude all year long when we are faced with challenges.” Rabbi Waijsfeld then shlugged kapporos with a live chicken and spoke to BPC’s residents about the power of teshuva. While some residents also did their own kapporos, many other residents just wanted to pet the chickens, said Mrs. Pavlov, who added with a laugh that the chickens were just a precursor to the Eric the Animal Guy, who, over Chol HaMoed, made an animal show for the residents, who got to see, touch, and learn about snakes, lizards, bunnies, turtles, and other animals. "We enjoyed the animals very much,” one resident said. "They were so cute!" Also during the aseres y’may teshuva, Rabbi Moshe

Meir Weiss also came to speak to the residents, and on Shabbos Shuva, the Chavraya Choir further inspired the BPC chevra, by singing even more songs from the Ya’mim Noarim. Motzei Yom Tov, after the first days, BPC made its own Simchas Bais Hashoevia with Chaim Blumenfeld singing, Yossi Eidlisz playing music, and the Tantzers dancing. “It was really freilach and beautiful,” said a resident, who added that the staff also brought in Chol HaMoed fun when Yossi’s Balloons went around to all the residents, especially those who were bed-bound, to make for them shapes, animals, and smiley faces out of balloons. On Hoshana Raba, Shia Fried brought his guitar for a kumzitz and davening, and Rabbi Waijsfeld connected David Hamelech, the last of the Ushbezin, with the need to make the effort to stay positive and b’simcha every day. “We know that David Hamelech never had a wonderful day in his life,” Rabbi Waijsfeld said. “Yet, he teaches us the idea of simchas Yom Tov, the simcha of the Torah, and simchas shel mitzvah. “David teaches us feel, to happy, to dance, and to feel light: just because we are part of K’lal Yisroel. We all have challenges in life, Rabbi Waijsfeld pointed out, but we have to rise above difficulties with simcha and happiness: which sometimes means dancing, but sometimes ‘rising above’ can just mean smiling and trying to stay as happy as possible in every situation. “All of Tehillim is all about davening and begging Hashem for help, but also thanking Him for what we have and staying happy with what we have been given. “The challenges are just there to help us to grow even higher.” On Shemini Atzeres as well, the resident heard many beautiful lectures and drashos. “The next day, Simchas Torah was absolutely beautiful: complete with plenty of dancing,” said Mrs. Pavlov, who described joyful staff members who wheeled residents around to dance with those in wheelchairs. "It can be hard for us to get around, so it was so nice to have everything for Yom Tov in one place," a resident said. After Mincha and Maariv on Simchas Torah at BPC, Rabbi Waijsfeld led the residents in closing out Yom Tov on a high note: with singing, dancing, and brachos. "Everything was in the true Yom Tov spirit,” said a BPC resident, “from start to finish.”

Elected Officials From Across the State Celebrate Sukkos in Borough Park With Community Leaders, Hosted by District Leader David Schwartz* Borough Park – A humble Borough Park Sukkah celebration, on Sunday, the 6th day of Sukkos, drew a rarely seen crowd of elected officials of all levels from across New York State. A crowd of askunim of the leading Kehilas and Mosdos had the opportunity meet up-close, in a very humble setting, New York’s Senator and the Majority Leader of the United States Senate Chuck Schumer, and a large group that included Congressmembers, incoming Borough Presidents, City Council members and Brooklyn District Leaders etc. Among the attendees at the event hosted by Borough Park’s young but dynamic District Leader David Schwartz - were Congressman Ritchie Torres, who was one of a number of Bronx of-

ficials braving the heavy traffic that day to attend the event, together with his colleague Rep. Yvette Clarke and former Rep. Max Rose. And Bronx wasn’t the furthest. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, who is arguably holding the third highest executive position in the state (Suffolk is the largest non-NYC county, and NYC doesn’t have county executives), made his way from Riverhead to join the sukkah event. The democratic nominees – and allbut-certain winners come November – for the Manhattan and Bronx Borough President, Current councilmembers Mark Levine and Venessa Gibson, also crossed their County border to the join the crowd at the 53rd Street Sukkah. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez

generously offered to approve the visas for outer-county officials, granting them entry to Brooklyn. The highlight of the event came early, with Senator Schumer’s remarks and kibbitzing. He reveled what propelled him to his majority leader post: his first bill in the NYS Assembly, at the age of 23 – being one of the youngest elected officials in Brooklyn, until David Schwartz bested him when he was elected to the district leader post at the age of 22 - was to revoke Alternate Side Parking on Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah. The Senator than listed his securing funding for yeshivas and shteeblech in the Covid bill, and seeing to it that all children should be eligible for the expanded child care tax credits. Originally,

the 250-300 monthly payments were only supposed to go to up to three children in a family. “Our Rabunim called me up from the Bobov, from the Satmar asking what about our families,” he said. The senator then made sure that all children will get the credits, to cover the high cost of living for large families. The senator spent the bulk of this address on the Alta Fixler case, that Rabbi Moshe Dovid Niederman, Presidents of the UJO of Williamsburg, got him heavily involved in trying to save this twoyear-old child’s life. The senator already secured a visa for the child, but the British hospital refused to allow for the child to be airlifted to the US where facilities are eager to provide her quality care. Instead, they insist to discontinue Alta’s life support. “Rabbi Niederman, he called me one day. Here is a new theory you should try,” the Senator said. Since the decision to discontinue Alta’s life support is a hospital decision, and the British have a national health care system, Prime Minister Johnson should be able to override this decision. During a meeting with Johnson last week, when he was in

the US for the UN general assembly, “I brought this up him. He was familiar (with the case). I told him, Jewish values or saving a life highest Talmudic value. You Mr. Prime Minister can save a life,” Schumer said. Senator Schumer was introduced by Rabbi Joel Rosenfeld, Director of Government Affairs for Bobov Community who is known for this political acumen. Rosenfeld thanked the Senator for not forgetting of his constituents and tending to the community’s needs, at the same time while minding the country’s most important business. Congressman Torres – who came fresh from being one of the key orchestrators of congress’ resounding vote to approve funding for the Iron Dome after a handful of members forced to remove if from a larger spending bill – was lauded for being a steadfast fighter against antisemitism, and his support for the community even when it’s unpopular. Torres vowed to continue stand up for what’s right. He pointed out that the Iron Dome provided mean more defends, which reduces offense and reduces bloodsheds on all sides and of all people, and he couldn’t

fathom the opposition to it. Borough Park’s Councilman Kalman Yeger profusely thanked his former colleague Congressman Torres for standing up for the Jewish community, and being a shield against antisemitism. The list of the Shukkah goers also included Councilman Justin Brannan who is among the front runners for the NYC Council Speakership, Assemblyman Bobby Carrol, Sol Rieger representing Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, Democratic nominees to the Council Ari Kagan, Lincoln Restler, Darlene Mealy, Mercedes Narcisse, Althea Stevens, Linda Lee, Marjorie Velazquez and Sam Weinberger representing City Council candidate Rita Joseph. Governor Kathy Hochul was represented by her senior advisor, Brooklyn’s Shirley Paul, and the her Jewish liaison, Jake Adler. Democratic Nominee to the Surrogate Court Judge Rosemarie Montalbano, who was strongly supported by the community that helped her secure the nomination, was also in attendance, as were Democratic District Leaders Kristina Naplatarski, Emile Bazile and Doug Schneider among others.
