The following students have advanced to the state competitionaftertheregionalUILmeetonSaturday,April23,atTylerJuniorCollege. Seniors Drew Simms, Jacob McCray, Keely Goelden and junior Talan Crain make up both the science and calculator teams, and they have qualified for the state competition in both. Junior Kaylee Kelly is headed to Austin as an individual competitor in the computer applications contest.

Some of these students already have plans on how to prepareforthemeetandareusingresourcesprovidedbytheircoaches.Thescience team is coached by Mrs. Allison Commander, and the calculator team is coachedbyMrs.LexiCommander Computerapplicationsiscoached byMrs.AliceLangley

“Preparingwise,IwillcontinuetoworkonthepacketsthatMrs.Langleygivesme,” Kellysaid.

Althoughthesestudentshavemadeittothestatelevelfortheirevents,therearestillsomeareasinwhichtheywouldliketoimprove.

“I need to work on my conceptual understanding of electrochemical cells,” McCray said, “specifically involving the standard hydrogen electrode(SHE)andhowtheinteractionofthecathodeandtheanodeaffectthepHofthecell.”

Thesestudentshaveworkedhardallyear,andtheirworkisfinallypayingoff.

BandPerformsSpringConcert

The school’s spring band concert was performed on April 27 at 6 pm Aselectionof songs was performed by each separate band Students were rewarded for their hard work overtheyearattheendoftheperformance

The bands have been preparing for this performanceforseveralweeks

“The band dresses up in business attire to look professional,” junior Talan Crain said “We set up on stage and run through all the music we have spent weeks working on, typicallythreepieces”

The bands played separately at the show Band director Mrs Tiffany Tanuyan statedthat the students played a few songs that were chosen and then rewards were given out to the memberswhothrivedthisyearinband

“Each band is slowly getting betterdayby day,” Tanuyan said “It has certainly been a school year withitschallenges,butthestudents have overcome a lot, and we [were] excited to presentthisconcert!”

Students in the band were excited for the concert and ready to perform their pieces for the school Some students believe that concert season is the best time to be in band because each collection of songs can be thrilling to the members

“The most exciting part of any concert is when my section, the French horn section, has a feature in the piece or has a soli feature with another section,” Crain said “It's exciting that the parts that can easily get covered up get a chancetoreallyshinethrough”

Students have mentioned that they really enjoyed playing the pieces that were performed onconcertnight Duringclass,ithas been said that the band members are often humming the sounds to the songs they practicedearlierinthemorningorafternoon

“My favorite piece [of music played] is Mission Impossible,” sophomoreTaylorMoore said “When we go to the auditorium to start rehearsing for the concert, I feel like there is [an element] that circles around the concert, and it draws in more people to watch the performance”
