Betty’s Corner

It seems that my Mother and Father were engaged to be married in 1954 when they became pregnant with me. Because they came from a conservative Lutheran family and because of the social morals of the 1950’s they were convinced that giving me up for adoption was their only option so that is what they did. My birth mother was quite smart. She went through Catholic Children’s services instead of its Lutheran counterpart I assume in order to protect my identity as my birth family is quite large. My new found siblings tell me that my parents did not want to give me up for adoption but were convinced that it was their only option. I was told that my siblings found out about me when they were in their teens and twenties and wanted to search for me then, but my Mother was unable to work through the emotions surrounding my adoption and asked that they wait until she passed to look for me. I am sharing this for many reasons, first I am elated that my birth siblings took the effort to search and find me. Second it speaks well of their character that they were willing to follow their Mothers wishes and wait. Third to those reading this who are adopted, there is always a chance to find your biological family, and an equal chance that they may just find you! Hope springs eternal. Lastly, if you have made the courageous decision to give a child up for adoption I would ask that you do the very best you can to resist the negative emotions that could block you from being able to be in contact with that child in the future. Guilt, regret, and shame are useless emotions that do nothing more than paralyze your ability to make positive decisions. I can only speak for myself but I think the majority of adoptees would agree with me. Now that I am an adult, I absolutely understand the decision my birth parents made and hold nothing against them for it. My birth Mothers sacrifice enabled my Mom and Dad to have and raise a family. A family that they would be unable to have any other way. What a wonderful and selfless gift that is! This Memorial Day I am traveling to Oregon with my new oldest sister to visit my birth Mothers grave and pay my respects. I am going to thank her for gifting me life, I am going to reassure her that I was placed in a loving home and that I am ok. I am going to thank her for doing such a good job raising my Brother and Sisters, and I am going to imagine myself in her embrace until we meet again.

On Wednesday May 18th I was contacted by David. We first connected on Facebook and then he texted me with an odd message. He said there was about a 90% chance that I was his older brother. My first thought was “this has got to be some sort of scam” you know like the Nigerian Prince who needs your help to get his inheritance and once you send him $5000 dollars he will send you twice that? So I asked a few more questions. As it turns out, my birth siblings had been searching for me since Mother died in September 26th 2015. They hired Carole, a confidential intermediary. She was able to open my adoption file and began to search old addresses of mine in an attempt to get permission to release information to my birth family. Apparently David became a bit impatient with the slowness of the process so he took to the internet and began his own search. (sound familiar?) He shared Carole’s e-mail address with me and I sent her a message stating that I had heard she was looking for me and I gave her my current address. I received a package in the mail that included letters and photos of my four sisters and David as well as pictures of my birth parents. These last few weeks have been a bit surreal as I have been slowly connecting with my new found Brother and Sisters.

Happy pride Month! Normally I would write about the history of Pride, and the Stonewall Riots of 1969. I would launch a vigorous defense of continuing Pride celebrations. I would passionately explain that in the beginning Pride Parades were protest marches and the evolution of them into commercially sponsored “entertainment” though unfortunate, mirrors what has happened to many commemorative celebrations of all sorts. Not this Month. Instead I would like to share about a personal event in my life that is rather earth shaking, could be inspiring to many others, and because of that fact I feel must be shared. In order to fully understand the significance of this event you will need some background information. I was born November 18th 1954 at Everett General Hospital and given up for adoption through Catholic Children’s Services. I was adopted by a wonderful couple who due to medical issues couldn’t have children of their own. Unlike adoptions today that can be open and fluid, in the 1950’s it was unheard of to allow information to flow back and forth between the birth parents and adoptive parents. Secrecy was the name of the game. It took an act of Congress to open an adoption file in the 1950’s, it’s good that it’s no longer that way because today’s Congress can’t decide what to order for lunch let alone pass anything of significance. Anyone who has ever met my folks will testify that they are and have been in love with each other since Goddess made dirt. I was fortunate to be raised in a very loving home. Like every family we had our challenges, but overall I really could not have asked for a more supportive caring family. Mom and Dad set the bar very high when it came to a loving relationship. Mom refers to Dad as “Saint Eddy” and Dad knows better than to outwardly disagree. Many times growing up I had considered attempting to locate my birth family, more for medical reasons than any other but I must admit I was curious as to the genetic and biological history of my clan. I never followed through with the search partially out of fear, and partially because I did not want to drag up what could be painful memories if my birth Mother and Father were still alive. At the ripe old age of 61 I figured that the time had passed for finding information about my birth family. As it turns out I could not have been more wrong!

The day I wrote this article, the United States House of Representatives voted down a bill that would have protected LGBTQ rights. The bill, which was actually expected to pass, would’ve made it illegal for federal contractors to fire employees based on orientation. It missed by one vote, failing 212 to 213. This article almost didn’t get written. I almost emailed Betty and said “I have nothing for you this month.” Because I was almost beaten. The hate that is being spewed – not only without fear of repercussion but with authority and legitimacy – very nearly got to me this month. I texted my sister because I had nothing. It’s not that I didn’t have an idea. Writer’s block sucks but it’s part of being a professional writer. You learn to just start putting words on the page and next thing you know, you’ve got an article, or an essay, or a chapter, or whatever. The day I wrote this, my nothing was more than that. I couldn’t bring myself to write an events article. Not with all the government sanctioned hate happening to us right now. But I couldn’t bring myself to write another article about the hate. Not this month. I had … nothing. And then my sister texted me back. My niece, her daughter, is in the 5th grade. Goes to public school. In the interest of full disclosure, she goes to public school in one of the most liberal, tipped all the way over to the left, artsy, earthy crunchy towns in the entire country. She still goes to public school. Here in the United States. Two of her friends, her schoolmates, are transgender girls. Openly, happily, supported by parents and community alike. In 4th and 5th grade. My friends, Darin and David, have become foster parents in order to begin the process of adoption. They’re in Oregon. My friends, Christine and Teresa, just up and got married at the spur of the moment last month. They’re in Connecticut. And another friend (who shall also remain unidentified, because he’s a minor) has come out to his friends, his school, and his mom as definitely gay, possibly transgender, and certainly bigender. He’s in Maryland (and still requests male pronouns, just to be clear). Five instances of love don’t even count as a drop given the tsunami of hatred that’s rushing toward us right now – and yet they MUST matter. They DO matter. Because it is different. And I have to believe that we will push back against the hate. Now is not an easy time. I’m deeply afraid it will get worse before it gets better. And – it is different. So I hold onto that. Because that’s something. Until next month, Poppets, take care of you – and each other.

Olivia asks: “ I am feeling like it is time to end my 20 year marriage. What do you see as the outcome?” Dear Olivia: Major life changes like the one you are contemplating are never easy and should cause us to look deeper into the situation to prevent repeating the same mistakes later on. Before ever drawing cards for you I have the feeling that the fact you have asked this question indicates that there is still work to be done. I drew 3 cards for you and they are: The 7 Of Wands, The Fool, and Death. The Death card jumps out and says that it is time for a total remodel of the relationship. This cards does not eliminate the possibility that you will choose to end the marriage but it rather indicates that there is considerable work to be done if it is to survive. The message of the Death card is to clear out the old to make room for the new. This means old attitudes, old expectations, and outdated beliefs have to go to make room for new ways of cooperating. The second card to focus on is The Fool. The message of The Fool is to stay in the moment, not focused on past disappointments or future doubts, but what is happening BP in this moment. The Fool also counsels us to remain unattached to an outcome and by staying in the moment we can learn to take ourselves less seriously. Clear communication is also absolutely necessary so that each party in the relationship has a clear understanding of the boundaries and privileges of the marriage. The last card, and in this case, the most significant card is the 7 Of Wands. Wands are the fire element in the deck. They are the indicators of your greatest passions and motivations and the 7 indicates a need to creatively visualize your best outcome. The message for you in this situation is to be laser focused on what you want and be very clear about your expectations. How can your partner ever hope to cooperate if you aren’t clear as to what you want from this relationship? This card turns the focus back to you and asks you to carefully examine your needs and desires when it comes to your relationship. Once you have a very clear image of your perfect marriage then it is time for you both to weigh your options. In summary, it is definitely time to clear out the old in this relationship. Letting go of old hurts and disappointments is your first step to living in the moment which is key to eliminating your doubts and worries about the future. Just as you would toss out moldy food from your refrigerator, you need to throw out the old feelings of distrust in order to move forward. Most importantly though you must identify your own needs and desires in order to gain the respect you deserve. To do this important work you will need to spend some time in meditation and seriously getting to know yourself and what will make you happy and fulfilled. I MISS KOOVAGAM (1) : A Bibliography of Queer Cinema By Lyle Pearson

It all started when I saw Viju Varma’s Malayalam ODUM RAJA AADU RANI (RANDY KING DANCING QUEEN) at the Bangalore Queer Film Festival, the funniest queer Indian feature film I’d seen in 2016. Venkidi (Tini Tom), a burly, itinerant women’s lingerie salesman must settle down because the cuckolded husbands of many of his customers are after him. He shares quarters with a meek, effeminate gay Karagattaara (ritual) dancer, Thamburu (Ankattan Pattambi, who also wrote the script) -- this is THE ODD COUPLE, but the Felix Unger character really is gay. Thamburu tries to get close to Venkidi, to keep him from ogling women, dresses in drag, cleans the house and cooks excellent meals. But after the Interval the exasperated Venkidi hires a woman to straighten out Thamburu and becomes jealous when their friendship blossoms. Later, Thamburu disappears and joins a family of hijras at the annual Chittirai (Tamil month, April/May) Aravane hijra festival in Koovagam, in Tamil Nadu. Venkidi and the woman, realizing they have wronged Thamburu, follow him, but then decide, rather conservatively, that after being ridiculed, he may be happier with his own kind. Not only is ODUM RAJA AADU RANI very funny, it is instructional in its documentary footage of the Koovagam festival. The film is so interesting, in fact that I planned to visit the same festival with Varma this year. Thereby hangs another tale. I emailed Varma and he answered that we would meet at the police station on the first day of Chittirai (April 15) -- the Superintendent of Police was a friend of his. So after training from Nileshwaram in Kerala to Salem and busing to a few kilometers from Koovagam I autorickshawed the rest of the way. Not only is there no regular bus to Koovagam, it turns out there is no police station: there would be a strong police force during the festival, I was told by a Hindi-speaker (I speak no Tamil), but the festival wouldn’t start for two days. Thus, the rickshaw driver telephoned Varma and I was instructed to go a “nearby” police station and check into a particular hotel. But I didn’t know what was meant by “nearby.” So we went to the nearest police station.

I returned to Police Headquarters Monday morning and was told that the Superintendent was “out of station.” So I phoned Varma a third time. “Go back to the hotel. Ashok is in room 112. Knock on his door.” So I did. He was there and would guide me in about a half an hour. We autorickshawed to the local hijra family home, where I met the head of the hijra family, gave her 1000 rupees on Ashok’s advice, pulled out my GoPro and videoed us all having a veg meal. One of the hijras was from Mumbai and we carried on in Hindi. I GoProed so much that my battery went down, so as we left and I discovered a sign designating the name and serial number of the ‘family,’ I couldn’t GoPro it. “Not a problem,” said Ashok in broken English, “We’ll be back tomorrow.” That night was the Miss Koovagam Beauty Contest. About twenty hijras, some from as far away as Malaysia and Singapore, were in competition. The auditorium was packed and the non-competing hijras got the best seats. There was always a space between their seats and the ones for the straight men behind and that aisle kept moving forward as more and more hijras packed together and some left in the three-and-a-half contest. The only ‘straight’ woman was Elaine Craddock, a Professor of Religion from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, working on a transgender project, dressed like the hijras in a sari with jasmine in her hair.

The next day the actual festival was to start in Koovagam, I was assured, and Ashok would knock at my door at 2:00 PM. But at 2:00 I was asleep in the heat and Ashok apparently only buzzed my buzzer, not knocking and assumed I wasn’t there. I woke at 2:20 and knocked on his door. He wasn’t there. Descended to the ground floor in the Residency lift, I met again two of Ashok’s friends. Ashok and his photographer had left for Koovagam. I was, of course, angry. “Why did they do that?” “Well, Ashok buzzed your buzzer.” I’d come all the way, not from Malaysia but from the U.S. -- well, at least for this event from Nileshwaram in Kerala. “ “So how do I get to Koovagam now?” One of the pair, the adopted son on the head of the hijra household, had indicated that he was also headed for Koovagam, but suddenly, he wasn’t – he was headed for his “native place.” “You have to take a car.” “There are no buses?” “No.” This sounded suspicious for I had already bused from Salem to near Koovagam once and autorickshawed the rest of the way. “How much is a car?” I asked. “800,” said the driver, sitting conveniently nearby, near the lobby TV set. “1000,” echoed the adopted son of the hijra. I raised my voice, “He said 800.” Having nothing smaller than a 500-rupee bill, I handed the driver, now even more conveniently standing at the hotel door, 1000 rupees, expecting 200 rupees in return. The son of the hijra, however, handed me another 500-rupee bill saying, “We’ll go with you.” It had been a ruse to get me to pay for at least half of a car and to avoid the arduous bus trip. The friends disappeared up the lift and then descended with backpacks. I immediately knew that, all along, they had been planning to spend the night in Koovagam. But I had nothing, packed, not my battery charger, not even a towel. “Are you happy now?” asked the other of the pair. “NO!” I felt tricked, as indeed I had been. But the three of us piled into a car and did head for Koovagam. When we stopped to pee by the side of the road, the one asked again, “Are you happy now?” I gestured with my right thumb and forefinger, “Just a little.”

w w w. i s s u u . c o m / t h e b e t t y p a g e s

No, that wasn’t it. We should go Vellupuram, thirty-five kilometers away. Oh, “And I may be late, if I can come at all,” added Varma, “I’m behind in shooting a new documentary.” By now my autorickshaw fee was mounting (it totaled 1100 rupees, about $16.00) and we didn’t get to Vellupuram until 7:30 PM, long after the Superintendent of Police would have left his office. So we went directly to the Ravindra Residency on Trichy Trunk Road and I was told that my AC-room would be nine hundred rupees a night, with a three thousand advance. But this was a Saturday and the next morning, after going to the wrong police station again (a traffic one this time), I found that the Police Headquarters was virtually empty: it was Sunday. Phoning Varma, again. I learned that a Mr. Ashok would knock on my door during the evening and he would be my guide. After a non-veg meal I returned to the Ravindra to sleep off my trip, turning the AC on and off, as the room was alternately too hot or too cold. Ashok did not knock at my door.

Not being aware of the protocol, having lost Ashok and his friends in the crowd and anxious to GroPro as much as I could, I sat with and kept moving forward with the hijras. At the end of the show, after dance, song, long speeches, a walk and pose by each contestant, each answere the question, posed in Tamil, “What will you do for the community?” I was standing by then up front with the phalanx of TV and news photogs and got a pretty good shot of the winner, Miss Gayatri of Salem, in a traditional, glittery red and gold sari. I also got a good look at the runner-up, Miss Bhavani of Kuala Lampur, in a nontraditional black gown with even more glitter, slit up to her left thigh over net stockings. She was very angry, having come all the way from Malaysia, at not being crowned Miss Koovagam 2016.

(Neat month: I reach the hijra festival in Koovagam.)
