Welcome to Bali’s high season. And what a season we have in stall for you. Over the next two weeks we will be building up to the biggest weekend of the year, which of course is the Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) holiday on Aug 17 closely followed by the end of Ramadhan and the beginning of Lebaran (the national holidays to celebrate Idul Fitri). That means a whole week of national public holidays and people from all over the planet descending upon us like never before. Welcome, welcome. If you thought it was crowded now, just watch out, ‘cause you ain’t seen nothing yet. So besides having a zillion people here, all running amok and weaving mayhem around the streets of this wonderful town, we also happen to have a host of classy events and shows coming our way. There’s something for everyone; a bit of rock, a bit dance, bit of show pony and all sure to be a load of glorious fun. You name it, we’ve got it. There’s some stormsome acts on the way and I get the feeling the shows will be going on for a few weeks yet. With all these great shows to choose from it may be hard to fathom your next move but that’s why we have this here magazine to accompany you every step of the way. Just check inside for all the details of all the party action and the more healthy side of the entertainment world too that exists around this place too. If you look hard enough you can find it, rest assured. Always drink in moderation and once we get over this next two week period we’ll be back just in time for the biggest weekend of the year, and this year a particularly large one at that, Friday August 17.

JosÊ Ramos-Horta confirms UWRF One of the founders of the independent Timor-Leste, JosÊ RamosHorta, has signed up to be a guest speaker at this year’s Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. Ramos was a founder and former member of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) and served as the spokesman for East Timorese resistance during Indonesian occupation. He nearly died after being shot in the gut during an assassination attempt in 2008. Seems like someone that might have something interesting to say during the festival (which is October 3-7) if you ask us.

New general manager at Anantara Seminyak Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort & Spa welcomed its new general manager, Christiane Doris Wasfy recently. Ms. Wasfy is a 30-year veteran in the hospitality industry with numerous awards and accolades. She started her career in her home country Austria before further honing her managerial skill at postings throughout the world in places that include Myanmar, Dubai, the Phillipines, Vietnam, and China.

Bali WISE to help the less fortunate in the island

According to ROLE foundation, over two hundred thousand women in Bali are illiterate, and close to 500,000 women lack the necessary vocational training required to thrive in the current job market. Sadly traditional jobs in agriculture and fisheries have disappeared in recent years. To address this discrepancy the ROLE foundation launched Bali WISE on July 24 at its education and development center in Nusa Dua. Tow hundred women have enrolled in the program that will provide education and training on hospitality, administration and sales skills as well as assistance on job placement. Bali WISE is expected to empower the targeted women, increase their skills, and eventually reduce overall poverty within the community.

Hard Rock Café Bali reached a new milestone last June when it was presented with the annual Top of the Rock award by Hard Rock International, given to six franchises and six company-owned cafes for financial performance, unique sales accomplishments and community contribution. On winning its third such award this year Hard Rock Café Bali beat 139 Hard Rock Cafes worldwide to receive a unique Fender guitar patterned after the artistic and a colorful Balinese dancer costume. Hard Rock Café Bali’s achievement will also be recognized in the Performance Hall of Fame for all the Top of the Rock recipients at Hard Rock Cafe’s corporate offices in Orlando.

Ramayana Resort Extreme Bartending

1o1 Legian shines in its first year

The 101 Legian Bali celebrated its first anniversary on July 8 by honoring the employees who made its first year in the business such a success. The celebration was a warm, homely event which adopted a Shine as a Star theme where staff took part in a number of competitions like a traditional Balinese couple BagusJegeg pageant and cooking competition. The management also joined in for a trip to an orphanage in Tabanan to share the joy. Besides a series of joyous celebrations the first anniversary was a solemn appreciation for support given to the hotel in its firstyear foray to bring the concept of new urban Legian into reality.

The bartender flair show down returns at Ramayana Resort on September 2. The Bali Stars War Flair Bartending Championship 2 is going to be the final battle between participants who received gold tickets from the qualification round for a grand prize of USD 3200. Star world champion bartender Marek Pozlusny from Poland will also make an appearance to give a little demonstration of his trickery.

stafford brothers eikon | friday 3 august Roots: Chris and Matt Stafford call the Gold Coast their hometown and have been known since the first time they laid their hands on a set of turntables as a pair of fun loving, party throwing DJs. The brothers have been no strangers to music as both had been playing the guitar and piano since a young age while absorbing electronic music at the same time. The boys also have university degrees in business and were pretty active in sports. Since attending a rave party at a warehouse, their life was changed as both agreed they want nothing else but to be the guys up behind the decks.

Sounds: House

Where You Might Have Heard them

www.beatmag.com

Most Australians know who the Stafford Brothers are as they are currently number one DJs in Australia according to 2011 ITM Dance awards. But they will definitely go further with more productions on the way and regular performances from Ibiza to Las Vegas. As a matter of fact Matt and Chris have just moved to Los Angeles while taking up DJ residencies for Tao Group worldwide. Meanwhile since 2011 they have their own reality TV show on Australia’s Fox8 which captures their DJing lifestyle and shows it to the masses.

Why See them To say that the brothers are a successful DJ team from Australia doesn’t do justice to what they can do. More than anything the boys know how to put on a show that often involves stage diving by either one of them. Matt and Chris Stafford are known to always infuse excitement into their crowd through their brand of funky house music. If there’s one show you want to see where you can let it all go, this is it.

andy murphy sky dome @sky garden | saturday 4 august Roots: To say the very least, Andy Murphy is a man of many talents. With vast success all over his homeland of Australia, his reach has also begun to spread abroad as well. From fashion and modeling, to being a sought after producer and DJ, Andy is making Melbourne proud. He is signed with and has been touring with Australia’s infamous OneLove label, as well as making appearances all across dance music charts with his productions.

Sounds: Electronica, house, electro.

Where You Might Have Heard Him For many Australians around the dance music scene, Andy probably needs no introduction. He’s earned multiple top 3 spots for In The Mix Awards, while playing massive venues and festivals like Future Music Festival, Betterdays, Stereosonic, Falls Festival, and Summadayze. Aside from his success on stage, Murph Dogg has discovered much of the same with his work in the studio as well. From his first track in 2009 “Music Master” which broke the top 10 charts, to “Everybody Get Up” which held #1 for four weeks!

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him Recently touring with the hugely popular Steve Aoki, Andy Murphy’s stock is only rising and he appears to be on track for truly great things. Outside of his dominance all over the land down under, he’s found himself in demand for places like South Korea, Dubai, New Zealand, and all across Asia. Much more than just your average DJ, Andy Murphy will be in town for one night only and you guessed it, at the massive Sky Dome.

delicious mint | friday 10 august Roots: Delicious from Copenhagen, Denmark are childhood friends Karina Jensen and Denise Jenses who currently reside in the UK. The girls grew up with a shared passion for electronic music. The bond between them continued when they started DJing together in 2001.

Sounds: House

Where You Might Have Heard tHem Delicious DJed all over Denmark during their formative years. In 2005 they went to Ibiza to take residency at BayBar before spreading their wings to more clubs in Europe. During this period in their career Delicious got the chance to play in some of the biggest venues in the world and worked with the big names in the business like Tiesto, Carl Cox, Gui Boratto, John Dahlback, and Dirty South, among others. In 2008 a track which was deliciously produced by the girls called ‘Bounce’ made Pete Tong’s Upfront Tune of The Week on his Fast Trax TV show. Since then they have put out a slew of acclaimed productions like ‘R.E.S.P.E.C.T’, ‘La Flauta’, ‘Trippin’, ‘Suenos’, and ‘Hot Boy’.

www.beatmag.com

Why See them With quite a number of accomplished tracks and live performances under their belt it comes as no surprise that Delicious was featured in IDJ Magazine in their Ones to Watch list. This summer the duo are going to prove their worth here in Bali with a funky upbeat style of house music that has made them a household name in Europe.

Stuart McLellen BLACK BOX | FRIday 10 august Roots: Heralding from the UK, Stuart has seen more action behind the decks than GI Joe has had against Cobra. With a profound history of production, events and festivals around the globe, Stuart has spent more than 20 years working with some of the world’s finest artists in the most dazzling locations. A rare breed in this new and trendy world of DJing, Stuart has truly applied himself to every facet of the industry from start to finish.

Sounds: Full spectrum house, techno, and electronica.

Where You Might Have Heard Him By no means a stranger to Bali, Stuart has been playing the scene here for several years and recently opened for none other than Fatboy Slim. His accolades however stem far further afield, with a constant presence in London and Paris for over 10 years, working with the likes of Laurent Garnier, Gilles Peterson and Pete Herbert. Add to that a festival and resident program throughout Europe, playing every major event on the calendar, we think it’s safe to say the man delivers.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him As an all round music aficionado, Stuart McLellen brings a range of skills and experience seldom seen in Bali. His knowledge and understanding of what music is and does, will give any listener a solid dose of well earned party magic – and that’s just what the doctor ordered. Catch him headlining the highly anticipated second installment of the Black Box Party, on August 10th, @ 88 Jalan Kerobokan.

Mike Richters hu’u bar | FRIday 10 august

Roots: Coming to rattle the dance floors of Indonesia, by way of The Netherlands; Mike Richters brings with him a wealth of experience and talent. One quarter of, and founding member of the house music collective Risk Sound System, Mike is a DJ/producer, as well as a former promoter and artist manager of Club Risk, and the Risk Agency. He has worked alongside remarkable acts like Kerry Chandler, Masters at Work, Ron Carroll, and plenty others.

Sounds: House, Techno.

Where You Might Have Heard Him Aside from his own success with Club Risk, Mike shares the spotlight with his fellow RiskSoundSystem members and their solid music productions. “The Sound Is Yours” got some big attention around the world and was a hit online as well. “The Shower” is another track that followed with some serious groove and true house music soul. Richters has found himself playing some rather sought after events/venues like Nikki Beach, Cielo, Djoon, Vanguard, and Ibiza’s Supperclub & El Divino.

www.beatmag.com

Why See Him If Mike’s dutch radio mix posted online on Mixcloud is any indication of what his sets behold, you would be in for a well deserved treat. No newcomer to what house music is meant to encompass, he takes listeners and party-goers right where they want to be.

Junior Jack and Kid Crème ku de ta | sunday 12 august Roots: Junior Jack and Kid Crème is a DJ tag team of Vito Lucente, AKA Junior Jack, and Nicolas Scaravilli, AKA Kid Crème, who despite having only been together for a few short years have commanded a lot of respect around the house music circuit, partly because of their respective achievements before becoming a pair. The young Lucente has been influenced by house from the beginning, while Scaravilli was moved by the London breakbeat scene. The former dabbled in acid house and Eurodance projects during his early years, the latter learned to spin hip-hop and played classic piano before being introduced to house.

Sounds: House

Where You Might Have seen them

www.beatmag.com

Junior Jack is but the latest and most successful incarnation of Vito Lucente. His first release as Junior Jack in 2000 “My Feeling” made national charts in Europe, the US, and Australia. The 2002 “Thrill Me” was his second and became an instant dance floor anthem in clubs around the world. Meanwhile Scaravilli’s first release as Kid Crème was “Austin’s Groove” in 2000, which also didn’t disappoint one little bit. Two years later his remix of “Shakedown at Night” became Seven magazine’s Single of the Week. As a pair they hold residency at the Ministry of Sound, tour super clubs and festivals around the world like the Smirnoff Nightlife Experience in Melbourne, Serbia’s EXIT festival, Ushuaia, Ibiza, Ministry of Sound London and Sunburn Festival, Goa. They have also produced the In The House mix album on Defected.

Why See them Both artists/producers have enjoyed big successes respectively. But together as Junior Jack and Kid Crème they are formidable. Individually they are much sought after producers with clients like Moby, Bob Sinclar, Kylie Minogue and ATFC. With a profile like theirs these guys are one summer act you don’t want to miss at Ku De Ta’s Rio Carnival themed, Summer of Love Annual Bikini Day Party - this year from 2pm to 11pm.

My seventeen year old son grabbed hold of the book Bali Raw in the back of my car coming back from Candi Dasa last weekend and couldn’t put it down. He was brought up between Bali and Australia and knows both places pretty well. He also likes an action book. He read six chapters straight, enthralled by every word, before we arrived home to Seminyak. My case was a little different. I read the first chapter of Bali Raw and thought,

is this guy kidding? Text: David Trauts

www.beatmag.com

M

alcolm Scott, the author and main character of Bali Raw, a new book based on his experiences of the rough side of Bali streets, or better said, the streets of Kuta, which dwells on the seedier, drunken and less salubrious side of our cherished tourist hub. The main protagonist and his three brothers who run a real estate business find themselves in one problematic situation after another caught up in street violence, mad people, desperate sorts at every turn and above all prostitutes. There are some humorous episodes but generally the undertone is built on raw machismo in a Les Norton way more than raw fact, which is perfect for a young lad like my son ready to lap up the heroics of a cool minded and a little arrogant central figure, but lacking on details of the real underbelly of this town. It’s a fun book though and easy to read from cover to cover. It’s a “Boys

Own” kind of action novel with many insights to the Kuta backstreet world of bars, expats and the ladies and men of the night. It’s full of hard hitting characters that call Kuta home both foreign and local, sometimes a touch racist, and as the author says, Bali Raw is possibly set to make as many friends as it makes enemies, as he doesn’t pull many punches on his rounds of the place and not everybody is going to see it the way he does. All round though, it’s a well written and presented book for a certain group of people coming to Bali and in particular Kuta. Personally I’d say the title “Kuta Raw” would have been more appropriate, but that’s another story. The Beat had the chance to ask Malcolm a few questions and the first had to be this...

MS: Bali Raw is all true. When you write a book, it is a little difficult to deal with time frame, without actually putting dates before every chapter. I can imagine that it may seem that I had some kind of wild ride while I lived in Bali. That wasn’t the case at all. The events that I write about in Bali Raw took place over eight years. I had plenty of times that were normal and boring. I doubt anyone would want to read about them though. Tell us something about your past. How did you come to be a writer? And how did you come to be in Kuta? MS: Bali Raw is my first book and I have had no real schooling other than always enjoying reading books and writing the odd article or short story for my work. I believe I was very lucky to get Bali Raw published as it is well known that the book industry is one of the most difficult businesses to break into. I was simply offered a job working in Bali that I thought would last two years. It turned into eight. I spent most of my time living in Kuta because it was cheap and I enjoyed its grittiness. I did however live in other places around the island. Is Kuta really as tough as you portray it in Bali Raw? MS: I believe Kuta has its rough element and I also believe it is getting worse. Saying that, the events depicted in Bali Raw took place over a long period of time. There are plenty of dull boring days when you live in Kuta. I noticed in the book that you didn’t name places. Was there a reason for that? MS: I didn’t name places and I changed names in Bali Raw because I didn’t want to bring unwanted attention to people or their businesses. I have no wish to embarrass or hurt anyone that still lives in Bali.

Also the only time you referred to Seminyak was saying that it was the more expensive part of town. Was there a reason for that and what do you think of Kuta’s northern neighbor? MS: I lived in Seminyak for a year during my stay in Bali and I have nothing against the area. I lived in dingy little broken down house not a villa. I didn’t go out much in Seminyak purely for expense issues. I was on a very tight budget while I lived in Bali. You seem to dwell on the working girls down in Kuta quite a lot. What are the chances of finding true love down there? MS: I think anyone that lives in Kuta long enough eventually comes to dwell on the working girl scene. Kuta is such a tight knit community that working girls become friends and associates a lot of the time. You also get to see and hear what goes on behind the scenes, once you become trusted by these women. I believe true love can be found with an ex working girl as long as cultural differences and life experiences are handled with delicacy and understanding. I believe the fault isn’t always with the ex-working girl when these relationships fall over. What would you say to someone who is thinking of moving to Kuta to live? What’s the most important thing to remember? MS: I was taught when I moved to Kuta that it is always wise to fly under the radar. I would say the same thing to anyone thinking of living in Kuta. Do not bring too much attention to yourself. You never know who is watching and most of the time the people that congregate around Kuta are watching. And do you see Kuta changing now? MS: I don’t know if Kuta will ever change, I guess it serves some sort of purpose being like it is. However, I do worry about the growing criminal element in the area. And I have concern for the safety of the younger more naive tourists that flock to Kuta.

Getting around in Bali isn’t easy no matter which mode of transport you employ: car, motorbike, on foot or TRANSPORT!

by Sarah Dee The night out in Kuta at The Beat Awards brought out all my worst character traits as I emerged from Sky Garden to find a gridlock of traffic, mostly taxis as far as the eye could see in any direction.

I have some gorgeous drivers who I often use, I also have a group of ojek drivers who congregate at the top of my street who I also regularly employ. They aren’t heavy, the price is reasonable and I am happy to give it to them.

I’m faced with a few options, get in one of the many vacant taxis and sit there interminably, grab an ojek (motorcycle transport, licensed or not) or walk.

The touts are another story. Holding people hostage is bad enough and cannot be good for the image of Bali. Forcing out taxi drivers who have to pay for their licenses, pay taxes and are required to maintain certain standards (like holding a legitimate drivers license) when there is clearly an overabundance of them doesn’t seem right to me.

www.beatmag.com

There were plenty of offers of transport, cries from every corner of the street. Despite my best bargaining skills and polite use of Indonesian (mostly), the price they all wanted was Rp100,000 to go from Kuta to Seminyak. Which is... well, a rip off. There is nothing new about this, but thankfully it doesn’t happen as often as it used to. Once upon a time whole areas were held ransom by the transport guys, taxis dare not pick up in protected zones. There are still a few of these areas that remain. Echo Beach, Kudeta, Double Six Beach, the airport and many others, are areas where taxis fear to tread.

So when I hear the cry, “transport!”, I don’t smile, I get mad. It really does make me mad. Unauthorised, unlicensed, often unclean and very often rude, I just really don’t know where they get off. I’m sure this will invite lots of comments from those who have had both good and bad transport experiences, and I look forward to hearing them. [Go online beatmag.com to make a comment]

At Waterbom Park there are many other types of water slides; different slides for different people, ranging from relaxing to the most thrilling. Other slides in the park are, Superbowl, Boomerang, Smashdown, Macaroni, Jungle Ride, Boogie Ride, River Raft, Race Track and lazy River.

A Day on the Slide

After a little while organizing tickets, changing, and getting a locker, our team quickly rushed to the closest ride, and the next, and the next, and the next, until we thought it may be time for an ice-cream break. We then excitedly jumped up the hundreds of stairs to the next slide, which happened to be the Race Track. Two of us shuffled to the top of the steep slide, as I looked down a rush came through me, I slowly sat down on to the soaked slide, the lifeguard called the last number and we quickly pushed off from the starting point. I lied down and looked but I barely saw anything; in a matter of seconds we were already at the bottom of the slide. We sprinted through the crowd and jumped into a tube then slid into the lazy river. The water swiftly carried us along; it was the perfect place to be after the rush of the steep slide. As I lay there, time slipped away I soon heard a loud voice awaking me. We walked to the grand food court full of great foods. After a couple more slides and some swimming, it was time to get dressed and call it a day. Waterbom is a great place to be for a family outing, full of thrills and relaxation. Tickets range from US$30- US$50 for adults and US$19 - US$31 for children and include access to tube rides and pools. [Paloma]

he newest attraction at the Bali fun park is The Climax, possibly the most thrilling ride in the whole park. After a three second wait in a chamber 19 meters above the ground, the floor quickly slides out causing riders to fall down the 70km/hour ride. The Climax is a sevensecond ride and receives a 5/5 for all three categories – speed, drench and thrill. The Beat magazine sent their own team to test this new ride, and it gained great comments including; “Not only is it one of the fastest rides at Waterbom, but it’s also the most exhilarating!”

ooking for a cool, contemporary eatery that has you covered for brekky, lunch and dinner? Look no further than Black Pepper – Seminyak’s only “food circus”. With only a few scattered restaurants up and down its length, Jalan Sunset Road has never really been known for its dining options, but the new Black Pepper Café located up the Seminyak end may well signify a change to all that. Bold, fresh and inviting, Black Pepper is more than a humble restaurant. An extensive wine cellar, high-end groceries and takeaway treats mean that the term ‘food circus’ is pleasingly apt. Despite only using the best quality fresh ingredients, the prices at Black Pepper are more than competitive, giving your average restaurant around town a real run for their money. Whether enjoying the open air terrace out front or chilling out in the comfy air conditioned interior, Mexican chef Ignacio Virgen (Nacho to his mates), will make sure that whatever you choose from the all-encompassing breakfast lunch and dinner menu will be a delight for the tastebuds, from salads to steaks, sandwiches to soups, pastas to pizzas and beyond. Having worked at such luminary establishments as the famed El Bulli in Spain and Alain Ducasse at the Plaza Atheneé in Paris, Ignacio brings an inventive, classy twist to the kitchen, dishing up well known recipes that just have that little something extra.

Take the Mexican Ceviche Mazatlan (55k++) starter for example. Instead of the usual “savoury ice cream cone” presentation, it’s a bundle of zesty lemon marinated tender prawns on top of one large crispy tortilla with tangy salsa and coriander. “It’s how they serve it locally in Mexico” he shrugs, leaving me wondering if I’ll be able to slide in a Mexico trip before the year is out. As a refresher, I get stuck into the B.P. blend juice (35k++) before my buddy arrives and we order up a plate of the sizzling Beef Fajitas (85k++) and the original Kungpao Chicken Pizza (65k++). Both are pretty hard to top, the fajitas being the ‘build your own’ variety, while the pizza is actually grilled to get an extra crispy crust on the base. Properly good. Dessert time and we split a Choco Fondant (35k++) over a couple of detoxifying juices (35k++), which also serves to refresh the palate after our lunchtime gluttony. The beauty of Black Pepper is that all of this affordable gourmet deliciousness is available to take away, along with a range of crepes and waffles, sorbets and gelatos, imported cheeses and homemade charcuterie items. The all-day breakfast is also worth a pop, with just about any combination of eggs’n’stuff available, with a daily cache of international newspapers and magazines to flick through at your leisure. Keep an eye out for ‘sunset on Sunset at Black Pepper’ between 5.30-8pm every day of the week, with discounts on booze and complimentary tapas.

Saint Etienne

Words and Music

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

When I was ten, I wanted to explore the world. There were these older kids at school who’d gone all the way to Somerset, just to see Peter Gabriel’s house,” begins Sarah Cracknell on “Over the Border”, perfectly summing up the depth and scope of the Croydon trio’s first offering since 2005’s Tales From Turnpike House. The eighth studio album from Saint Etienne, Words and Music is, at its core, a record for people who remember the link between cassette tapes and pencils, and used to video the Sunday morning Chart Show while listening to John Peel. “Will Marc Bolan still be relevant when I have kids?” she (quite reasonably) wonders. Cracknell’s musical fixation and stream of consciousness might be the first hint about just how obsessed these guys are about the power of music, but it certainly isn’t the last – the whole album is literally peppered with music-as-an-affirmationof-life themes and dizzying, euphoric moments of joyous sound. “DJ” is a hymn to surprisingly, DJs, that Kylie would have killed for, while “I’ve Got Your Music” and “Tonight” are examples of the kind of flawless disco pop that Madonna pays people thousands to write for her. Elsewhere, in between the aforementioned floor-fillers, standout tracks like “Twenty Five Years” and “When I Was Seventeen” shimmer with synthesized beauty. This is real Pop music as it should be, without the songs for sale and no airbrushed dancing monkeys (I’m talking to you Robbie Williams and Cheryl Cole) required to sing it. Maybe not mainstream popular but that’s not the point - it’s throwaway music so perfectly done that you might just end up keeping it forever. Dan Ashcroft

Bethany Hamilton gets wildcard into 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang

H

awaiian charger Bethany Hamilton has been awarded a wildcard spot in the 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational. Hamilton, 22, from Kauai, Hawaii, will be the first-ever woman surfer to compete in the Rip Curl Cup (July 15 – August 26). The fearless goofy footer, known for her exploits in powerful waves, is relishing the historic opportunity to surf against the best barrel riders on the planet at Bali’s most revered wave.

most famous surfer when, at the age of 13, she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off Kauai’s North Shore. The attack left Hamilton with a severed left arm. Miraculously, just one month after the attack, she returned to the water to continue pursuing her goal of becoming a professional surfer. In 2004 Hamilton published a best-selling autobiography entitled Soul Surfer, which was later made into a major motion picture.

“The Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang is the longest running surf event in Indonesia so I am really stoked to get one of the wildcards.” said Hamilton.

Hamilton has competed in many ASP Women’s World Tour events since turning pro in 2007, but the 2012 Rip Curl Cup will be her first time competing against male surfers in a professional surf contest. In her opening round heat at Padang Padang, Hamilton will surf against Laurie Towner (Australia) and local surfers Mustofa Jeksen (Kuta) and Made Lana (Uluwatu).

www.beatmag.com

“It should be super sick to just go and surf Padang Padang with three other guys. Even though that is a little intimidating, I am just really excited for one day of epic barrel riding.” Hamilton earned her invitation to the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest based on her solid credentials in big, hollow surf, and her several impressive freesurfing performances out at Padang Padang in recent years. Hamilton has also charged the treacherous barrels at Teahupoo in Tahiti, and is a regular at many of the lesser-known heavy reefbreaks near her home on Kauai. “I only surfed Padang Padang for two solid swells but I immediately fell in love with the wave,” Hamilton said, “It’s challenging but then once you get a barrel you are just so exhilarated.” In 2003 Hamilton became arguably the world’s

Contest Director Pete Matthews also commented: “We’re stoked to be in a position to award Bethany a wildcard spot into the main event, we’ve been discussing it for a few years now after seeing her charge the waves at Padang on each visit to Bali. With the opportunity of surfing with only three others in the water, I’m sure Bethany is keen to dominate the uncrowded line-up and with her incredible barrel-riding skills, she will be one to watch.” As we go to press the wait for the right swell to start the 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational continues.

Total Recall Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi. Director: Len Wiseman. Writers: Kurt Wimmer, Mark Bomback. Cast: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy, Ethan Hawke, John Cho. Like the original 1990 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, a factory worker visits Rekall – a facility center that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a different life or role they’d like to lead. He discovers that he is a super spy on the run when the procedure goes wrong. From the writer of the “Underworld” series, this film has some pretty giant shoes to fill as it may seem entirely too soon to feature a remake of the 1990 classic of the same name. Expect great sci-fi action and a very trippy story line.

Three Stooges Comedy. Writers & Directors: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly. Cast: Sean Hayes, Will Sasso, Chris Diamantopoulus, Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Hudson. See the cast? Yep, all veteran TV sitcom actors and actresses like Sean Hayes as Jack in Will & Grace, Jance Lynch as Sue Sylvester from Glee are put together by writer-director duo Bobby and Peter Farrely, better known as the Farrely Brothers, to serve you a simple story-driven comedy. The story itself is quite original with three nun-raised men trying to save their childhood orphanage only to stumble into a murder plot and somehow wind up in a reality TV show. Sure to be another wacky Farrely Brothers plot lined with ridiculous gags.

Silent House Horror, Mystery, Thriller. Directors: Chris Kentis, Laura Lau. Writer: Laura Lau. Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross, From the same couple who brought you the hit indie film Open Water back in 2003 are now remaking a Paraguayan horror-mystery. Set at a secluded lake house, one uninterrupted long shot which appears to be in real time. The inventive camera work depicts a woman terrorized as she cleans up a property with her father and uncle. Sumatran artist, Erizal AS juxtaposes a sense of sight and sound in creating an art work, especially in his paintings. He has chosen not to explore the differences between these two senses because while sight is usually considered the single most important sense, hearing has always come a close second.

Erizal AS

Erizal, a graduate and lecturer at Yogyakarta’s prestigious Academy of the Arts (ISI) has perfected a technique of layering color on his canvasses with bold quick stokes that create movement and depth. Although his current works are ostensibly abstract, they are clearly inspired by the exuberant beauty of flowers bursting with color, twisting and turning gracefully like dancers. This time, Ganesha Gallery proudly presents his flowery works in an exhibition titled “Visual Symphonies” which will showcase his latest series of stunning creation. The exhibition opens on August 2 and runs through October 1. Ganesha Gallery, Four Season Jimbaran, Bali. T: 70-1010

Ashoka Spa

A Centre of Wellness.

Bali Dynasty Resort has upgraded its spa to create a centre of wellness.

Look:

Created in wood, bamboo and glass, Ashoka Spa at Bali Dynasty Resort has a calm and organic feeling to it. The natural materials employed in the spa interiors are offset by brilliant blue ceilings in the treatment rooms which brings to mind the seaside. The lobby of the new spa facility offers deep, relaxing armchairs for manicures and pedicures while ten rooms have been created for specialty treatments.

www.beatmag.com

Feel:

The original Balinese massage which was adapted from leading spa trainer Jari Menari has been extended in an original signature massage, which includes long strokes and a pressure point massage. The relaxing treatment aims at releasing stress and promoting healing, while stimulating the respiratory and central nervous system. The refresher facial offered as part of the Ashoka Rejuvenation, uses natural local products to brighten and firm the skin.

Ingredients:

Each treatment begins with a footbath to cleanse the feet and rub away dead skin with the aid of natural salts. Lusciously scented aromatherapy oils are employed in the massage offering a variety of therapeutic benefits. Treatments include Ayurvedic Shirodara massage with hot oil, Hot Stone massages and Royal Thai Massage.

Magic:

Ashoka is designed as a sensual experience from the look to the feel, the smells and the sounds reverberating throughout this tranquil spa. The team of therapists is confident and professional, meeting the needs of a demanding clientele, many of whom are regular guests.

Semara Luxury Villa Resort rests atop a range of limestone cliffs in the southernmost tip of the island, some 15 kilometers south of the Ngurah Rai airport. The resort is hidden in an area commonly known as the Bukit that used to be the backwoods region of south Bali. Yet the stunning scenery of the Indian Ocean, beautiful beaches, and perfect waves made the Bukit a worldclass destination like no other in Bali.

Look

The 7.5 acre resort combines modern and tropical architectural styles that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The ridged contours along the cliff edge provides a natural uneven platform on which the resort is constructed. Each of the seven villas boasts different layout with individual emphasis on modern, traditional Balinese, East Asian, and colonial styles respectively.

Semara Luxury Villa Resort Semara Luxury Villa Resort brings back the once pristine tropical paradise vibe that Bali was known for with all the modern comfort that makes for an exclusive escape from the rest of the world.
