Here we are moving quickly into 2020. It was a shame to see one of Seminyak’s old icons, Bintang supermarket burn down last week, but fortunately the rain came along, bucketing down just in time (at around 4am) dampening the flames before it got any worse. The neighbours must have been worried for a while but everyone was safe and no causalities were sustained. They say it will be back again, bigger and better than before. We look forward to that. Speaking of supermarkets, it must be time someone built a big one up around Canggu. Food for thought, I’m sure. There are a few big shows coming up over the next couple of weeks we should point you towards. This weekend at Omnia is kind of special with the return of Lee Burridge to Bali, this time at Omnia. He plays two shows, the first on Sunday, All Day I Dream and then on Monday on the Omnia Cube (only the cube) for one of the famed spectacular location Cercle videos in the making. Before you jump on the phone to book, that one is already sold out. The last time Burridge was in town was another moment in Bali nightlife history, Castaway, the first rave at GWK before all kinds problems happened at the venue later. Ahh, we love a bit of history in the making. The Martinez Brothers, who are famed sons of Ibiza’s DC10 will be playing a special Friday day party at the spectacular Morabito Art Villa on Berawa beach and then after party at Red Ruby. That should be a true journey through time and space. It all happens on Friday January 31. Get ready for that, sign up now. It should be huge. Happening for the fourth consecutive year is Bali’s Biggest Clean up, hosted on the 15th of February by the Bye Bye Plastic Bags initiative, a prominent force behind the Bali plastic ban. The event is an island wide mission that raises awareness towards plastic pollution, with this year providing two options for participants! The first is getting involved as a coordinator, with leadership roles for your local area, and the second being a clean-up volunteer. Get involved and show your support for an eco–conscious Bali. Make A Change World Officially Installs TrashBlock Gary Bencheghib and the Make A Change World team officially launched their new TrashBlock system in the Subak Pernacak in mid-January. After a month in the water, the system has been fully tested and is confirmed that the stainless-steel blockage is hard as a rock and prevents all plastics floating downstream — roughly catching around 26Kgs per day, with the majority of the waste being plastic bags and sachets that are not recyclable. Each day, the waste that is caught is collected and taken to a mobile sorting station where it’s washed and weighed before being sent off to recycle. Make A Change have also partnered with German company Plastic Fischer to create innovative floating trash booms for rivers. The Indonesian government has committed to the UN and the world that Indonesia has to reduce at least 70% of the marine litter to the sea by 2025… and Gary has made it his mission to achieve this target.

SCOOP R.O.L.E Kick of 2020 with a Bang! The R.O.L.E foundation have been hard at it since the start to 2020 with their Eco Surf Rescue program holding a beach clean up with over 100 eager participants on January 11. Despite the downpour that happened in the morning, there were lots of smiles involved in collecting 182kgs of non-organic waste. R.O.L.E have also further opened their grounds to the public, offering a tour of their workshops and offering a heap of environmental education. Alongside the educational Saturday morning data, R.O.L.E have realized that there is a need to focus on educating the local communities, as most of the participants of the clean up were local school children and locals who were unaware of the importance of a beach clean-up and the impact plastic has on our environment. One of the most popular collectives on the island, known for their infectious energy on the decks, versatile musical repertoire and the notorious back2backs between all members of the crew. PNNY started out as a group of Bali kids wanting to congregate in the local scene for the love of partying and bringing people together, which quickly grew into an international crew and became a staple name at all of the biggest venues and special events to come through the island of the gods. PNNY consists of members Todays Renaissance, Trigan Young, Alex V, Theo R, Equal, Dubwill, Kiran and Andy Chunes. All bringing a special flavour to the decks, the boys have stayed true to their sound and always keep audiences on their toes with a kaleidoscope of music endlessly flowing throughout their sets. Everything from hip hop to disco to techno, PNNY sets are always genre defying. Their residencies span from Metto Mondays at Luigis Pizza (proper bangin!), the Backroom at Mason, Thursdays at Da Maria, Wednesdays and Saturdays at Vault and not to mention their notorious residency at La Brisa in conjunction with Basment Love of which they have supported acts such as Dennis Sulta, Octo Octa & Eris Drew, Ata, HAAI, Massimiliano Pagliara and their Boiler Room debut with Gerd Janson. 2019 was a massive year for the crew and it seems like they’ve put the pedal to the metal and 2020 looks even bigger! Their upcoming gigs at La Brisa will include massive names such as Nyra & Sirs, Peak & Swift and DJ Boring, as well as two bosses from the Keinemusik crew; Rampa and &ME. You can catch these fellas all around the island at several other venues but one thing is for sure – once you party with PNNY you stay with PNNY.

Tell us your background in music Grew up listening mainly to hiphop .. My neighbourhood was really big on it .. I had a friend DJ on my 11th Birthday (DJ Ruben) .. Dude was tattooed from head to toe .. Since then I always wanted to become a DJ .. I love all types of music, house, trance, rock, metal .. Basically anything under the sun, although my passion is and always will be, where I am from .. Urban hip-hop.

Of course, everything you hear is true… With another expansion and brand new concept taking off recently, Rumours, the famed casual dining restaurant on Eats Street, Seminyak, and the brand itself, just can’t be held back. The first ever beach club concept from Rumours is now open on Sentosa Island, Singapore and it’s all about SAND, SUN, SEA and REPEAT. That’s the mantra of the new Rumours Beach Club, which officially opened in December 2019, and it has the sand, sun, sea in spades and so much more. I was there to check the new club last weekend. It was also the first time I had visited Sentosa Island. The entire island is made for tourism and is basically Pleasure Island for Singaporeans, with resorts, attractions like Universal Studios, a sea aquarium, an adventure park, etc and is perfect for escaping the nearby city. I was surprised to see so much forest and verdant foliage throughout the island, but I imagined that was what Singapore city itself would have looked like before mankind arrived. Rumours Beach Club is sited on one of the most popular beaches on the island, Siloso Beach, in what could be called a private enclave, made for
pedestrian traffic only. It’s a back-to-nature experience right from the outset, and with a short walk or ride in the free shuttle bus from the Sentosa Express’s Beach Station, you immediately begin to relax and enjoy the fresh air and natural surroundings. I stayed the night right across the road at the Siloso Beach Resort (Suitably comfortable and around Rp 2 million per night). The beach club has all the trappings of a luxury lifestyle and also has clear access to the white sand beach and blue sea in front. There are two small islands just off-shore and looking cute, too. Besides being able to jump straight into the sea, there are three swimming pools offering VIP, adults only and family swimming spaces. There is plenty of room for everyone and every requirement. Rumours Beach Club is really made for a fun day, or evening on the beach but with plenty of style, class and excellent food and beverage. Think bespoke cocktails from the bar, or succulent seafood ala Jimbaran Beach in Bali from the barbeque station, and you’ll be homing in on the Rumours food concept. I www.thebeatbali.com

So, splash into the glittering, crystal clean pool water surrounded by open cabanas and day beds, or grab a towel and head for the beach to soak up the rays. Now, that’s the way to step out of the city in a sunny, casual way. The beachfront area has a day bed and bean bag capacity of 120 pax. And how about that dining? From starters to the desserts, the Bali-trained executive chef at Rumours Beach Club has curated some exquisite dishes for day and evening diners. The menu has you covered from bar snacks such as Nacho Chips and Calamari to Western favourites like Rumours Signature Burger, Quattro Formaggi Pizza, grilled succulent steaks, an enormous seafood platter for sharing and many pasta dishes to choose from. Being born and bred on the island of Bali, Indonesian dishes feature too with delicacies including a range of satays, oxtail soup and nasi campur Bali. You can also watch the expert chefs grill and serve the previously mentioned, sizzling hot Jimbaran-style seafood
and perfectly cooked import steaks at the live BBQ hut next to the main swimming pool. Rumours Bali is also known as a night spot for a drink, party and DJs spinning some fun music every night of the week. So what party action do they have to offer at the beach club? For starters they have a UK resident DJ and music director, Matty Wainwright. Some of you may know of him from here in Bali. As I was

leaving, I asked him the same question and Matty began by telling me RBC will not be the same as the other beach clubs already on the island. Please elaborate, sir. “Music wise the concept is to stand out from the other venues in Siloso who play EDM and very commercial pop music. Musically, we will be a sanctuary in Singapore for guests that want to experience that proper beach club vibe, like we are used to in (lots of) venues in Bali,” Matty begins. “This means a very broad and non-commercial music direction. Day time toe tappers around the pool, across all genres of laid back music, very ‘Balearic’ for want of a better word, proper sunsets and then flowing into more uptempo eclectic rhythms as the night comes in. We are blessed to have the best sound-system on the beach with our Funktion-One set up, which can cater from day to day vibes right up to our regular international DJ parties.” Well, that sounds cool. They have kept the resident DJ team to a small and experienced group of both international and
Singaporean DJs who have enough hours under their belt to be able to seamlessly weave between different genres and ages of tracks to create that perfect beachside vibe. There will also be a string of unsung heroes from the local scenes in South East Asia - the resident DJs, when they are passing through Singapore, from places like Bali, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Saigon and Bangkok. “On the subject of International DJ performances,” continues Matty, “we are having our Grand Opening party on Saturday 15th February with none other than The Cuban Brothers! This will also be kicking off our 1st Sunday of every month weekend parties ‘R.U.S.S.H’ (Rumours Sunset Hour), which will feature local and international DJ acts.” Keep your eye on their social media events calendars for all the details of those shows. OK, hands up. We’re cheating here. Usually we review an album. A new one ideally, buuuut this week is a little different. Sue us. (Actually don’t, we need the beer money). First of all, there are no new albums here per se. And it’s not just one album either. It’s all of them. Allllll the Radiohead ones to be precise. Yep, for the first time ever, the luminary Oxford trailblazers have compiled everything they’ve ever recorded into one gigantic online library. FOR FREE. From early bootlegs of when they were known as ‘On A Friday’ and the grungy Radiohead debut “Pablo Honey”, all the way through to their newest boundary-pushing brilliance, there’s enough here to keep the most die-hard of fans happy for weeks. And the B-sides! My word what B-sides. Most bands would kill to have offcuts and oddities as good as these.
Having wasted an solid few days already down the rabbit hole, some particularly juicy standouts have gotten stuck in the browser. Check out their live only version of Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does it Better” (this is the SEXIEST song ever written drools Thom Yorke). Sticking to the Bond themes – their actual Bond theme “Spectre” is so good it beggars belief that it was binned off in favour of prissy warbler Sam Smith’s god-awful dirge.
