SCOOP Erick Morillo is Back! Café del Mar Bali will be hosting legendary DJ and producer Erick Morillo for what will surely be an amazing night with an epic soundscape. Erick took a break from the scene back in 2013 after a wild, long spanned career of touring and partying but he’s back and seems to be fresh as ever! The platinum-selling artist’s recent 2019 stints in Ibiza have made waves and spread rumours of his return, so we can’t wait to hear what’s in store for his show on Friday, January 24th. Popularly known for hits like ‘Reach’, ‘Do What You Want’ and ‘I Feel Love’ – Morillo has already proved himself as a total beast, only now he’s got a new upgraded repertoire and its sounds bangin! Catch him on around sunset for an extended 3-hour set.

Los Gringos on the move Los Gringos is closing in its present position on Jalan Aya Kayu and moving 50 meters down the street to a new, larger and better location. According to management, the new Los Gringos will be built in two phases: Phase 1 ‘Poco Hefe’ is slated to open April 1 and will be similar to the existing Gringos, but a little bigger. Phase 2 ‘El Hefe’, which should be open on Aug 1, will be a completely new & massive venue, and will be headlining some of the best RnB / Hip Hop / Latino artists in the world! The last night of the present Los Gringos will be January 18.

Bali Street Kids Project x Lost City DJ Dodger alongside 1st Hustle’s Ambassador Berlin Bintang and Lost City Canggu are fundraising for the Bali Street Kids Project with a party on January 17! The party will feature DJs Dodjer, Dennie, Septa, Flex and Niken – and will be supported by 4P (Pink Print Plastic Project). Berlin Bintang in collaboration with 1st Hustle is also doing her part with a portion of every sale of the new Insta360 One X camera going to the BSKP. The Bali Street Kids Project provides for two orphanages, one in the city and one much larger one in a nearby village – helping provide education, food and housing. PLUR Global has also joined the cause, meaning there will be DJ’s, dancers, crazy products and an awesome retailer. Join the party on Jan 17 for a good cause and help Bali Street Kids grow! #WeAreTheChange.

BALI ELECTRONIC MUSIC COLLECTIVES

THU RS DAY

The Beat checks out the undeground electronic collectives on the island/ Series 1

One of the most long-standing house music collectives on the island with a reputation of funky, organic sounding — eclectic sounds. Tantra consist of a solid crew of Indonesians from all over the archipelago featuring artists, DJs and visual artists with a vision beyond music and a yearning for creative expression. With their 3rd year anniversary just passing on Sunday, January 5th at Potato Head of which they are residents, Tantra are coming off a mega year celebrating highlights like their recent Boiler Room showcase at La Brisa supporting Gerd Janson as well as the ongoing Night Moves events at the same venue where they have supported the likes of Leon Vynehall, Moxie, Kink, Pete Herbert, Kamma and Masalo to name a few of the recent shows. The collective is made up of Kai, Doctor Yez, Danny, Archie and Ones as well as visual artists,

RA and JG and videographer/photographer Aged. As much as they are a house music collective, Tantra go beyond events – expressing ideas through workshops and exhibitions, striving to connect the dots between artists and enthusiasts encouraging collaborations to advance the culture in general, and in Indonesia particularly. Stay tuned to their Paddy Grooves Radio show broadcasted from the Tantra Bali Creative Space & Studio which includes a recording studio ran by Jonathan Paradede. Also keep your eyes and ears peeled for their record label “Tambo” that will be releasing music as of 2020 and if you’re around for 25th of January catch them at their Diskotik Tantra party at 40 Thieves! A FEW DAYS IN

David Trauts

Phnom Penh Cambodia has come a long way in the past few years. After being brought to its knees and sent back to the equivalent of the dark ages by the Khmer Rouge (tyrannical communists that took over the country from 1975 to 1979), it has taken many years for Cambodia and its capital Phnom Penh (PP) to get back on its feet, but they have. Today PP is a bustling and thriving populous. Skyscrapers are going up fast and optimism is in the air. Last year Cambodia had the highest economic growth rate in all of Southeast Asia, but the city still has a quaint, big country town feel for the moment, which for me, is its special charm. Let alone the price of a beer! Toot Toot! Tuk-tuks should be mandatory in every urban area around the world. The

42

motorbike driven bemo tucks and weaves through the traffic quick, getting you to your destination in no time. What a fun way to get around town and nowadays Grab has also gotten into the act and put tuk-tuks on their app. For 1 or 2 dollars you can get just about anywhere in the central district. It may be a different story in winter, but during the dry season, which had just started before we arrived, it was a wonderful way to get around and see the sights. Another option is walking. The grid-like town planning of the mostly tree-lined streets is ideal for a stroll. The tropical heat may wear down the frail, but a walk along the riverside promenade, past the palace, and meandering your way north to Central Market for example is not to be missed.

FEATURE

During the day, visitors have a handful of sightseeing options. The genocide museums; the Killing Fields and Prison S21 are must-visit locations to get an up-close and sobering look at what man can do to fellow man under very wrong conditions. The top two markets, Central Market, which features classic, art deco, French design and then in the south, the Russian Market are both great spots to find a bargain. Shopping is generally pretty good in the malls and markets, and with a lot of clothing being made in Cambodia for export around the world, there is some good stuff to be had at very reasonable prices. The National Museum and the Palace are also worth a look for a touch of Cambodian and Khmer history.

There are restaurants of all styles and cuisines everywhere you look in Phnom Penh. However, it would appear breakfast is not so important for Cambodians as most breakfasts we had, both in the hotels and on the street were rather ordinary, except one place, a French fine-dining bistro called Khmer Pasteur. There you can get one of the best brunches ever for $11.90++ per person. The local Khmer cuisine was excellent, too. Highlights being the Amok, which is a popular local fish curry, traditionally presented in a bamboo leaf boat with a custard-

like curry mix - very tasty when you manage to find an authentic one. The meat and seafood steamboats are also very tasty and sour soup and other Khmer curries are also winners. Nightlife, and the booze in particular, are also the big winners in PP. Try Bassac Lane in BKK1 for the fashionable, pint-sized cocktail bars, all about the size of a shoe box and offering certain drinks and décor styles in each. It’s a very cool spot. Standout bars: White Rabbit, Harry’s and Hub Street. The old school, Wild Weststyle Phnom Penh night scene is still alive and

FEATURE

well too. Get a few cheap beers and cocktails while watching the world go by is a must on Street 136 in the Riverside area. Try some of the hostess bars for a giggle too. The whole area of Riverside is full of bars, restaurants and rooftops. One in particular, Juniper Gin Bar on top of Point Hotel, has great views and equally impressive cocktails. I don’t think I have had so many cocktails in my life as that trip to Phnom Penh. Probably because the alcohol is so inexpensive compared to Indonesia. $US5.00 will get you an

excellently crafted cocktail in the fanciest bar in town – now that’s value. No wonder there are so many middle ages dudes hanging around bars in PP. Could be one of the reasons, anyway. The drinking in Cambodia is top level and top shelf all the way. As I’ve said to friends since returning, Phnom Penh would be a great place to wind up a drunk. Citilink flies direct to Phnom Penh from Jakarta three days per week. The cost for return from Bali is around Rp 2.5 million. www.thebeatbali.com

Each unique object represents an occurrence or memory, a central theme to Adam’s art; “Often a memory is sparked by an image, a feeling of something familiar, a person you knew, a place you’ve been. “I collect images, I take photos of everything, the memories, not necessarily a moment, not necessarily a photograph,” he says. CD REVIEW

7/10

Balearic bliss

Psychemagik

I Feel How This Night Should Look Renowned for their expansive, eclectic sets, the UK production team of Danny McLewin and Tom Coveney – better known as Psychemagik – have had a proper rummage around in their record crate, finally stepping back from the Soundcloud mixes to lay down their first LP in proper album format. It’s been a long time coming too, with the pair spending years on the project, utilising Kate Bush’s old workspace, East London analogue hub Toe Rag Studios, and George Martin’s Air Studios Lyndhurst Hall, where the duo recorded a seventeen piece string section. Opening track and lead single “We Can Be One” is tinged with a Balearic vibe and features a divine vocal turn from the multitalented New York musician Bing Ji Ling

aka Quinn Lamont Luke. It’s the gorgeous “Valley of Paradise” that really lifts off though, with it’s twinkly Riders-On-The-Storm keyboards and rolling acoustic guitars. The beautifully undulating electronica continues throughout – most notably on “Cosmic Forest”, while the wonky hip-hop of “Chimera” and retro fuzz-bass “Ghost Particle” is a nice shakeup. Rounding out proceedings is the seductive noir ballad “Something to Believe” featuring country chanteuse Holly Golightly on seductive vocals. It’s primo sunset fodder, so expect to hear some of these beats drifting out of your nearest Bali beach bar speakers any time soon. Dan Ashcroft
