Going by international press articles recently you would think it must be time for Bali to lift its game. Traffic, pollution, and whatever else has been cited in a barrage of negatives, some accurate and some a tad hysterical, may well have an effect on tourism in the coming years. As some people say, the possible slowdown of sorts caused by this bad press could be a benefit in some ways, but it isn’t really an effective way to handle the island’s problems – ie. grinding the traffic to a gridlock to stop the multitude of people wanting to come here. As we’ve always said, a little bit of town planning would go a long way, but that’s beginning to sound like a broken record. I’m hearing more expats in Jakarta nowadays saying they now prefer to fly direct to Lombok for holidays than the usual Ngurah Rai port of call, and with the new airport opening last week and new roads being built on our neighbouring island, Bali will have to watch out. The good times may be a thing of the past if we’re not careful. However, as we all know, it’s not all that bad and it’s never really been all that good, and in particular, all that safe. So, like always we have to keep our wits and be aware of what’s going on around us. Possibly with all the publicity of the Aussie 14 year old being picked up on drug charges recently in Kuta, visitors will be a little more cautious holidaying on this island in the future, too. Meanwhile, the party goes on and this week there are a load of shows around town. This Friday the new Sakala venue opens in Tanjung Benoa with a mass of international and national DJs and continues each night all through the weekend. Boshe is celebrating their 1st anniversary and featuring Indonesian Pop Diva, Agnes Monica on Friday night too. Halloween will be filling most of the other bars and clubs with ghoulish themes and prizes for the best dressed all weekend. Next weekend we have Timmy Vegas at Woo and Layo & Bushwacka! at Mint on Friday, and Saturday at Hu’u one of the masters, Dennis Ferrer will be bringing his Objektivity sound to town. They are all top shelf acts and not to be missed. All the other spots will be pumping it up too with their regular nights and we’d like to remind you to drink safely and grab a cab if you feel you’ve had a few too many.

Scoop Tournament of Champions For the third and last year Commonwealth Bank will be sponsoring the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali. Rock ‘n Run Returns This year Hard Rock Hotel Bali continues its annual charity fun run event. The annual 5km Rock ’n Run event this year will aptly be called ‘The 11th Chapter’ and will be held on the 27th of November, starting at 6.30am. For those wanting to participate, the registration counter will open from the 26th of October until the 26th of November from 11am - 6pm in front of the giant surf board at the Hard Rock Hotel Bali. The registration fee for runners is 100K/person which includes a Rock ‘n Run t-shirt and refreshments during the event. All proceeds of this year’s charity event will be donated to the Smile Foundation through the Rotary Club of Bali - Seminyak. The funds will then be designated to help those in need of cleft lip and palate operations, to bring a smile to unfortunate children afflicted with this facial disfigurement for a happier life. Q.HEART Fashion Show at JP’s Sexy and cute are just about the nicest adjectives one can say about a woman, and if you want those words used to describe you, then November 1st and 2nd are two days you’ll want to mark in your calendar. Q.HEART is putting on a fashion show to display their funky carefree clothes at JP’s, with accessories being supplied by Qalania Collection. On both days, the event kicks off at 8pm and the fashion show starts at 8:30. Scoop International Bali Meditators Festival Following the success of the two previous International Bali Meditators festivals in Ubud which began in 2009, the third edition to this celebration of inner peace will once again commence on the 10th of November for four days. The three venues used for the event will be Museum Puri Lukisan, Puri Saraswati and the parking area of Puri Lukisan, which will feature workshops presented by a specially selected number of gurus including key speaker Anand Krishna. The previous festivals brought in around 800 visitors each, and this year the festival of love and spiritual awareness is targeted to break the 1000 mark. 3rd Annual Capoeira Bali International Festival Prepare yourselves for a three day Brazilian cultural festival that will be filled with performances, workshops, and a whole lot of partying. Escola Cultural Zungu Capoeira Bali will be hosting leading practitioners of the Brazilian dance-fight of Capoeira for a three day festival in Bali. Participants will get an in-depth look at Capoeira and other Brazilian dances such as Samba and traditional Nordeste Brazilian dance. Workshops will be held at the Canggu Club from the 18th until the 20th of November, featuring demonstrations, workshops and open roda (free for all Capoeira dance). Have Been Layo & Bushwacka! are an electronic music duo comprising of Matthew ‘Bushwacka’ B - a percussionist from the London School Symphony Orchestra who was converted into a member of the infamous Rat Pack after a warehouse party in ’88, and Layo Paskin - a North Londoner immersed in the acid house scene. The two got together via a mutual friend, and by the mid 90s they had started writing music together. Over a decade later, the partnership has yielded three studio albums, three mix albums, internationally renowned club residencies and a superb record label. Their sound brings together Electro, House and Break Beat fused with Blues, Dub and Downtempo, all underpinned and informed by their collective experience of underground culture. This inclusive and open minded approach to sound became the blueprint for their future work. The expansive musical tastes demonstrated from their club residencies, known as ‘All Night Long’ came together perfectly with the release of their third artist album, ‘Feels Closer’, in 2006 - released on their label, Olmeto Records. Has Been Not one to talk himself up, Timmy Vegas is a hard working DJ/producer and compulsive online poker player from the Midlands. His stage name is actually his Internet poker name, but he is also known as Movementz, and was the other half of Soul Central with ginger haired DJ Andy Ward. Together they released the UK top 10 hit ‘Strings of life (Stronger on my own)’ featuring vocals by diva Kathy Brown. The track gained much attention at the annual Miami winter music conference, and went on to become an Ibiza anthem before storming into the UK singles chart in early 2005 following its release on the premier UK imprint ‘Defected’. Has Been Luckily for Dennis Ferrer (and his subsequent career) he was most definitely in the right place at the right time, most of the time. Just as the dance music world was heading towards the world of Afro-centric House, Ferrer was there. And then, when it began to embrace a mix of tech and soul, Ferrer was there again, leading the way with his impeccable productions. Wherever Ferrer goes, it seems, electronic music follows. Ferrer burst into the consciousness of dance music heads in 2003 with the release of ‘Sandcastles’, a collaboration effort with Jerome Sydenham. This wasn’t his first step into the world of dance music, as he had been around for far longer than that. He was crafting techno records in the mid-’90s under the moniker Morph, and then had success in the Afro and Gospel House scenes with releases via his Sfere label, an imprint he began alongside Kerri Chandler. Ferrer’s Techno experience has given him an edge that can be heard in his recent work such as ‘Son of Raw’, Church Lady’ and many others that have all been huge dance floor anthems that each show a different side of his personality. Ferrer released “Hey Hey” for Objektivity in 2010 which immediately caught on with DJs all over the world. UK radio DJ Pete Tong said at the time that the record ‘gives me goose bumps, it’s quality from start to finish; it’s a return to the finest virtues of house music, this is brilliant.’ The single is also notable for having received one of the most rapid reactions in recent dance music history - shooting immediately to 1 on Beatport. “Hey Hey” is vocal driven and so it was appropriate that Dennis was nominated for a Grammy in 2010 for another vocal driven tune - his “Dennis Ferrer Objektivity Mix” of Dido’s “Don’t Believe In Love”. Is Now Ferrer’s latest endeavor sees him joining elite artists to construct and mix a Defected ‘In the House’ compilation. His selections show that he‘s an artist who refuses to have his music pigeon-holed into one sub-category of House music and continues coming up trumps. On his first trip to Bali, Dennis Ferrer will be taking to the decks at Hu’u on the 5th of November and is joined by Yousef (Circus) and Andre Hommen also from Objektivity. Not to be missed.

ast Sunday afternoon Phil Mimbimi fired up the first edition of The Beat Sunday BBQ at hu’u in Petitenget cooking up a storm of gourmet BBQ favourites for the folks that turned up to the sunset event. Great food was the name of the game for the punters on hand, who also brought with them a stash of goodies for the kids at the Wisma Harapan orphanage. The barbie, which featured highlights of wagyu sirloin, merguez sausage and banana wrapped fish, was also complemented with a free flow of Heineken beer for the eaters and sunset tunes from DJ Anastasia and live music later from the duo. All that for 120k? It went from 3pm to 9pm with a consistent flow of punters feeding up on the treats all thru the evening. The Sunday Sunset BBQ will be back soon.

S.B. Tell the story Rick. R.M. My name is Ricky Moss, fifty years old and I come from Port Elizabeth S. Africa. Nelson Mandela was born there as well. S.B. Background? R.M. Financial Peninsula Teckmon Costing, business management, University in Cape Town. Education since childhood at the Institute of Music, which was a convent. My education was an all about guitars, bass, drums piano and vocal. Also composition, production, and so came the development of music education. My passion is for disadvantaged youth. In essence, on the streets back in the day our surroundings were very tough, because the volatile situation was there. There was only one outlet for us kids, the mentors were the drug lords and gangsters where I grew up, referred to as the Hood, like the Bronx in New York. So as a product of our legacy, our role now since Apartheid is to replicate the material aspect of addressing youth rights in an educational sense. S.B. So the medium is the message and music is the way to get to the youth? R.M. Yes, exactly. S.B. So we’re here in Bali on a mission from God so to speak, why, who, what and where? R.M. For me, it was like a calling. I’d never heard of Bali before in my life. I came to Bali in 2003 and found some very spiritual centres in Bali, like in the mountains, Lake Batur etc. At that time I already had it mind to educate somehow in music, and I’ve been to India, Asia and the like, thinking; “how can I contribute?” Seven years surveying and I had come to the conclusion as to how much I wanted to contribute. I discovered there was an abundance of musical talent in Indonesia, Surabaya, Jakarta and Bali, and so for the past years I have been dealing with the Indonesian Government, the Department of Education and Art and Culture groups, expanding my concern as to why there is such a lack of reasonability towards the arts, putting the facts on the table. I was offered a position from the Government as a joint partner to start to coordinate the development of music in Indonesia by the National Coordinate for Music Development. What attracted me was, there were no personal motives other than solutions. Everyone is very passionate about the development of youth, with special emphasis on the spiritual aspect. This does not happen anywhere else in the world, evolution is the design of what we’re going to establish.

S.B. When does this project actually start? R.M. October 2011, and the first step is to begin an awareness campaign in all schools - two hundred and eighty three to be exact. That’s my immediate responsibility, and through that to include the talent that exists in areas of dance, comedy, theatre productions and live sound productions. S.B. So basically anybody who has an interest - it doesn’t matter where you come from, whatever it is, if you have an interest, you’re more than welcome? R.M. Yes, exactly, the full spectrum of entertainment through the arts. S.B. What is the curriculum design offer? R.M. The faculty provides formal training, recruits talented participants, schools (public and private), resources such as hardware, equipment, production facilities, recording facilities, video, sound productions, outlets for performances, theater productions, speech and drama, legal principals of practitioners and management courses, personal and artists. The whole gamut of the music industry. S.B. Is there a philosophy behind this endeavor? R.M. Yes - never give up. There will always be obstacles in life, but if you surround yourself with a positive domain, you will learn to arm yourself by virtue of just walking in the light. rmed only with a text message giving no more than the vaguest instruction as to where the new Pavone restaurant is (“somewhere in Padma, mate”), I’m expecting a lengthy mission around the back streets before actually finding the place. I needn’t have worried though - the striking white premises complete with buzzing neon pink sign that looks like something straight out of Miami Vice is not easy to miss amongst the throng of sports bars and DVD shops along Padma’s main strip. Helpfully, a large parking area out back negates the ordeal of having to wedge the bike somewhere along the main road, and it’s not long before I’m sipping on a cool iced tea and perusing the rather swanky looking silver bound menu. It doesn’t just look pretty either, with a fully stacked lineup of breakfast options, lunch specials, appetisers, mains, tapas and desserts there’s something for everyone - from Mediterranean delights to Asian fare.

For the main, I’m torn between the Australian tenderloin with herb butter (150k++) and the seafood pasta (70k++), eventually deciding to go with the surf option, which is a delicious medley of creamy pasta with fat calamari chunks and tender prawns scattered throughout. I panic momentarily as a plate of incredibly tender looking red meat whizzes past my nose en route to another table, but the spotlessly empty plate in front of me reassures that I made the right choice. To keep the old sweet tooth happy I opt for a creme caramel (25k++) for dessert - a huge portion it turns out, that is easily enough to share. As much as I’d love to stick around for the live piano performance (every night from 7pm onwards) it’s time to get a move on and I bid the friendly staff farewell, vowing to return again soon.

The Watchowski brothers show their sadist side with this blood gore of a flick, starring K-pop singing sensation Rain who plays a rogue ninja out to kill his former master and avenge the death of a loved one. Plenty of blood splatters in this one, despite the main man looking more like a boy band member than a ninja.

Goemon

This is a romanticized version of legendary ninja Goemon, who was known for his attempt to assassinate ruthless shogun Nobunaga. In this version, Goemon actually sides with Nobunaga as he has vowed to protect his niece from rivals. An epic story filled with first class visual effects.

Azumi

Based on a Japanese Manga comic of the same name, Azumi tells the story of a young girl trained to be the ultimate ninja. After being forced to kill her fellow trainees as part of her ninja training regime, the beautiful Aya Ueto as Azumi sets off to stop a nefarious plot to assassinate Tokugawa Leyasu. The movie stays true to its source material and very brutal.

You got to love these white guy turned ninja stories and the simply titled ‘Ninja’, is another take on what American Ninja did in the 80’s. A western trained ninjutsu in Japan is asked by his sensei to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja. You’ll find a lot of ninja-on-ninja action in this flick - maybe they should have called it ‘Ninjas’ instead.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Okay, so the film isn’t about ninjas, but it has a great ninja battle scene in it between the mute GI Joe gun slinging ninja Snake Eyes against his adopted brother Storm Shadow. Actually there are two ninja fight scenes, one near the climax of the movie and another earlier on when the two rivals are still kids.

ever one to be pidgeonholed, Bjork has gained quite a reputation as an innovator in music, and this ‘app album’ certainly sticks to that. Said to be partly recorded on an iPad, she combines music, apps, Internet, installations, and live shows into the album. Biophilia doesn’t come as a rush like 2007’s ‘Volta’, but it’s still a provoking experimental piece of electronica with minimal sounds and less loops. ‘Moon’ is a very quiet harmony, merging harps, harmonic singing, and a haunting almost subliminal choir - a beautiful anomalous song. The rest of the album is a similarly electronic adventure that is sure to both challenge and reward in equal measures.

n antidote to the often sterile sunset beats from DJs in Bali, Ron Kingston’s pop tunes come from ‘Down Under’ with plenty of soul and Aussie optimism. It’s like listening to a white Babyface, and the tunes roll out the speakers effortlessly. ‘All You Need To Know’ on the whole is a simple and catchy affair, nicely exemplified by the upbeat ‘Make it Up To You’. A duet with Indonesian singer Mia called ‘My Friend’ reminds me of the old animation movie soundtracks of the 90’s. Perfectly polished soulful pop that will go down a treat on an easy Sunday morning.

As the day dawned, competitors and surf fans were greeted by a slight increase in swell size as predicted by official event forecaster Surfline, with clean 3 - 5 foot surf consistently rolling into Canggu. Stop number one of three on the ASP World Junior Tour, the Oakley World Pro Junior plays a vital role in determining the ASP World Junior Champion. With critical ratings points on the line the remaining competitors held nothing back for an exciting final day of competition. The final heat had the crowd on the black sand beach of Canggu on their feet as the two surfers battled it out in a flurry of sets, carving and slashing the long rippable right-handers. It was Cathels who stood up and snatched the win, gouging a couple of monster turns and launching into a massive lien air to score a near perfect 9.63 (out of a possible 10) to shut the door on Doheny’s Oakley World Pro Junior title hopes. Davey Cathels takes the event win, US$25,000 and the lead in the ASP World Junior Title Race with 10,000 rating points.

Oakley’s team surfer Conner Coffin (USA) was eliminated in the next Semifinal by fellow American Andrew Doheny. The heat started slow, but finished on a high note with both surfers putting it all on the line with two big exchanges during the final minutes of the heat. Nostalgia

n an island famed as a tourist destination and billed as ‘Paradise on Earth’ for over a century, the subject of nostalgia is something of a loaded question after so many devoted generations have fallen in love with their versions of Bali. In a series of paintings drawn from traditional subjects – the cockfight, the marketplace and the rice fields – the DutchAustralian artist George Wagner presents memories of the past, clad in new clothing. Although this is his first exhibition in Bali, Wagner is no stranger to the island or Indonesia, being born and spending most of his youth during the Dutch colonial era in what is now Jakarta. George’s style is distinctive and inimitable. Using pure colour, he boldly applies the paint directly onto surfaces that vibrate with energy. Lisna happily celebrates her artistic side through the world of theatre. By choosing theatrical art as her outlet to express her artistic side, she believes that theatre is not only a form of entertainment, but can develop one’s mentality and characteristics. Her performances tend to focus on ‘change’, always bringing a fresh angle to classic stage performances that is different from the original while still maintaining the main elements so as to not alienate the audience. She not only uses the stage to perform, Lisna also uses her movements to speak out about critical issues regarding social matters.

She took her first footsteps into the world of theatre in 2003 when she was a part of Teater Topeng SMAN 2. Not only a face on stage, she has also gone behind the scenes to try her hand at being a director. In 2010 she was awarded the Best Actress award at Gelar Teater La Jose 2010. With her group 108, she presented Monolog Masmirah at the SAWMA Awards 2011, and went on to perform another monologue at T Art Space in Ubud. Lisna also performed in one of Bali Experimental Theatre’s versions of Nanoq Da Kansas’s ‘Rezim’ at Parade Teater Arti Se Bali in 2011.

Have Been The Script is an Irish band formed by members Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power. The founders of the group were Danny and Mark who both met at a club not far from a Guinness factory. Their self titled debut album was released in 2008 and several of the songs were used in big hit TV series like 90210, Ghost Whisperer, The Hills and many others. The success of their debut album, lead them to win the award for ‘Best Selling Irish Act’ at the 2008 World Music Awards. The following year saw them win awards for Best Irish Band, Best Album, and Best Live Performance in the 2009 Meteor Ireland Music Awards. Just last year The Script released their Sophmore album titled ‘Science & Faith’ and following the success of the second album got them nominated as ‘Choice Music Group’ at this years Teen Choice Awards. are Now Maybe because they met in a club near a Guinness factory was the reason The Script was chosen to be one of the bands that will be featured at this year’s Guinness Arthur’s Day which will be held on the 12th of November at Pullman Ballroom. alam rangka perayaan ulang tahun ke-22, Eastern Promise menggelar serangkaian acara yang dimulai sejak awal malam. Sebanyak 20 Barrel bir disajikan secara gratis untuk para tamu sejak pukul 6 sore. Dalam kesempatan ini pula diperkenalkan kepada publik Sports Bar-nya yang baru. Yang tampil sebagai pengisi acara adalah Nu Color Band ditambah dua DJ impor yaitu DJ Wow dari Singapore dan DJ Stefano dari Bangkok. Kemeriahan acara semakin ditambah dengan hadirnya sesi kontes bernyanyi ‘EP Idol’ yang diikuti oleh para tamu. To celebrate its 22nd anniversary, Eastern Promise cracked open 20 barrels of beer for guests starting from 6pm. The celebrations also included the official opening of the new sports bar. Entertaining the crowd was Nu Colour band and DJs Wow from Singapore and DJ Stefano from Bangkok. To add to the festivities was an ‘EP Idol’ singing competition, which had guests singing on stage for prizes.

aroeng Party adalah acara perhelatan para komunitas pecinta fashion yang diadakan pada waktu tertentu. Awal Oktober merupakan waktunya berkumpul kembali dan acara ini digelar di Apperitivo yang berlokasi di Kuningan. Ada yang spesial dalam acara yang bertema saroeng tersebut, yaitu kembalinya Proyek bernama Turntable Orchestra yang digagas oleh DJ Indra RIM. Setelah vakum sekian lama, kini proyek tersebut dihidupkan kembali oleh Indra dan kali ini mengajak DJ Nino untuk turut serta. Dengan balutan musik Classic Disco, Indra dan Nino berhasil mengangkat antusias pengunjung untuk larut bernostalgia di atas dance floor. Saroeng party is an event put on by the fashion community, and is held almost every month. The first week of October was chosen for the return of the event, and featured the turntable skills of DJ Indra RIM collaborating with DJ Nino. The two played classic disco tunes while the crowd danced in nostalgic bliss to all the oldie beats.

abu malam adalah waktunya ber-Salsa di Hacienda. Acara dimulai pada pukul 9 malam dan dibuka dengan penampilan para instruktur, Damaris dan Iono yang kemudian mengajak para tamu yang hadir untuk ikut Salsa bersama. Para tamu yang berdansa, baik yang pemula maupun yang sudah mahir, mengisi lantai dansa dan tampil bergantian dengan Iono dan Damaris, sementara yang tidak ikut, tampak antusias menyimak dari kursi mereka. Kesempatan terbuka bagi Salsa mania setiap hari Rabu di Hacienda. Wednesday night’s at Hacienda is Salsa night and time for newbie’s and well trained dancers take to the dance floor and get a few pointers from instructors Damaris and Iono. For the small few reluctant to bust their moves on the dance floor enjoyed the performance from the sidelines. If you happen to be a Salsa maniac, make your way to Hacienda every Wednesday.

Di tengah keseruan acara, terselip perayaan ulang tahun dari tamu Red Square yang mendapat kejutan dan didaulat untuk meniup lilin. Red Square’s serial ‘House of Fantasy’ event is known for presenting different themes every week and this time saw DJs Iwel, Ruffie and Ricky Chattaway playing Sexy House tracks for the crowd. Adding to the night’s festivities one of the guests celebrated their birthday and was called on stage to do the traditional blowing of the candles.

ebelum merayakan ulang tahun yang ketiga, LUV’S Bar & Dine menggelar sebuah acara pemanasan terlebih dahulu. Resident DJ Nathalie, Wachitarica, Ferra Allony dan Vinny Liv bergantian menggulirkan dance track sebagai pembuka acara dan perlahan namun pasti, pengunjung pun berdatangan. Tengah malam, fashion show digelar dengan menampilkan kreasi rancangan fashion designer Audhitz bertema ‘Napoleon’, sesuai dengan tema Courvoisier yang menjadi sponsor acara. Setelah para model yang tergabung dalam LV C&C Models, giliran DnD Dancers yang tampil di atas catwalk dan acara yang dipandu oleh MC Twailla ini pun semakin ramai. Puncak malam diramaikan dengan permainan DJ Adrian yang mengisi DJ Booth dibantu dengan VJ Hip Traffic dengan tampilan visual di big screen. Jadi tidak sabar menunggu acara resminya! To build anticipation for LUV’s Bar & Dine’s upcoming anniversary celebration, it held a pre-party, giving clubbers a little peep of what they had in store. Lighting up the night first was LUV’s lineup of radiant resident DJs followed by a fashion show showcasing a baroque style designs by Auditz before the DnD dancers took their place in the spotlight. As the night lingered on the crowd only intensified in numbers, just in time for the main attraction DJ Adrian who was aided by the visual expertise of VJ Hip Traffic. Can’t wait for the real anniversary party!
