ditorial T

his year’s High Season was a mixed bag of tricks. KuDeTa had their most successful season of August parties to date with people from all over the world and from around the corner attending in droves. The higher entrance price may have thinned the crowd but only for the better giving a little more space to enjoy the show. Cocoon made a rather large splash and after opening for a week was pulling large, after midnight crowds even on Monday and Tuesday nights. Most other bars and clubs were busy through the month but not breaking any particular records. It just goes to show how the party scene here depends on the local crowds to keep the late night places going. After the White Party we cruised down town Seminyak for la ultima (last drink) and it was dead as a door nail. I can’t recall a late Saturday night being so quiet. What’s it all mean? It could be one of two things. The fasting month of Ramadhan or people are becoming more sensible and health conscious. Maybe it’s a bit of both. It’s been a strange one but it did start very early too this year with the world cup supplying a lot of night time activity through June and July and it’s about to start again next week. Idul Fitri is coming, which will bring holidaymakers from all over the Muslim world to eat, shop, and party their way through town for over a week starting next weekend. Watch out for the traffic and the crowds. Check the what’s on and herenow sections inside for your full measure of entertainment on this island. BaliSpirit Festival Outreach Program 2010 The BaliSpirit Festival supports an abundance of outreach programs, and in the past two years, it has raised and donated a total of US $34,000 to different charities. BaliSpirit and its founders are committed to giving back to the local community through fundraising events for local NGOs, artistic collaboration between Indonesian and international performers and annual educational initiatives in local villages. This year, an additional outreach initiative has come into play, working with the local government and regional not-for-profits to launch a sustainable program called: ‘Ayo! Kita Bicara HIV/AIDS!’. Sounds Like Electronica, House, Techno Hails From UK

has Been Dazzled as a child by the African inspired rhythms of Adam and the Ants, then becoming hooked on a musical diet of the Smiths, Parliament, David Sylvian and Roxy Music, Ashley Casselle was inspired to experiment with his first synthesizer and drum machine combo at an early age. From there the love grew and as an adult Ashley has continued pushing his sound forward whilst avoiding the genre restrictions that many electronic producers and DJs get caught in. In the early to mid nineties, still under the alias Daydreemer, Ashley became absorbed by the emerging house and techno scenes, playing live sets at outdoor raves and developing his own blend of Detroit techno and UK house. His status as top jock and producer has been set in stone by repeated placement in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs list. is Now Recently Ashley has graced the decks in the world’s best discotheques, large and small, from San Francisco’s Ruby Skye, NYC’s ‘Sullivan Room’ to Singapore’s Zouk, through to a triumphant tour of Brazil’s finest clubs. He is now set to hit the stage at Double Six for its regular UK Club Night, which has a habit of bringing out the best that Britain has to offer.

Many consider local jazz legend Rio Sidik to be the Asian answer to a young Miles Davis and he’s been a regular face on the music scene in Bali and across Indonesia for some time now. The time was due for some overseas jams though, so he recently hit the UK and Europe with his trumpet in hand. We caught up with him on the road… So what was the motivation to head overseas? Is it all about the music or more of a chance for some personal adventures and self-discovery? The reason is all about music, bro. I love travelling and playing music and people love me because of what I do man... It feels nice! And also because of my divorce recently, I feel I need to travel, so that’s why I took the offer... What was the offer exactly? The offer came from my good friend Martin Lindsey Clark for the UK area, Marco Lorenzi for the Portugal area and Violet Van Der Straaten for the

070 | beatmag.com

Holland area. So, I have been sponsored by these people. They just believed in me and my music too, so they planned everything a few months back, though there’s been some spontaneous gigs as well. They trust that I can do it and so far I think I’ve done some great stuff! Ha ha! I hope I have. I am very lucky indeed! So which parts of the world map have you ticked off on this trip so far? So far I have been in the UK and Portugal. Tomorrow I’m going to Holland and Germany and then I go back to the UK for more gigs.

beatmag.com | 071

feature And overall, where have you travelled worldwide so far? Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, though I’ve never been to America. Next year I will go there. If you could bring back something to Bali to add to the scene here, what would it be? It would be the girls bro... ha ha ha! Well, to be honest with you Bali has everything I need over there. I am very happy to live there, man. Who have been some of the most inspiring people you have met so far? Anyone taught you anything unexpected? Yeah, definitely... There are some wise people I’ve met during my travels but they’re not all musicians. Mostly they’ve taught me about life and being humble and easy going and about trying to make life simple and nice. Gotten into any close scrapes or misadventures? Lost passport? Been mugged? Yeah!I was mugged by some Irish people while I was in the UK... I really thought that they were nice people and needed money and they tried to sell their laptop to me but it was a trick and they took my money. Haha! I felt soooo stupid man. Where have you been that you’ve felt the most at home? Portugal by far... Wildest experience so far? Ha… playing in a summer party on the beach in Portugal. The girls were sooooooo crazy and they went up to me (to the stage) about 10-15 of them, and then they flashed me their boobs man! What would you miss about Bali after being

072 | beatmag.com

away for a while? Hmmm....I miss my Sampoerna cigarettes, man! Have you been traveling solo the whole time? This time yes... but in the UK and Holland there’s been a band to accompany me, Germany will be the same. In Portugal I play mostly with DJs and I did some nice recordings too... Who have you been staying with? My promoter mostly. I’ve stayed in some nice hotels and apartments. Have your gigs been rehearsed or improvised? It depends, man. When I play with DJs, with some of them I just improvise, but with a band I rehearse first. So what have you noticed about the music styles and genres as you’ve moved from place to place? By far I really enjoyed the music quality in the UK. They really can play you know. And they are also passionate with their music. Portugal is also cool man, I have been hanging around famous people in Portugal like actresses, actors and music producers and they are very nice people dude. But the UK rules bro... So how much longer are you away? What are the plans for the rest of the trip? I will be back in Bali at the end of September. On September 25th there’s a charity night that I’ll be performing at in the UK. Many mega-stars like Simon Cowell from X Factor and American Idol will be there, along with many other Hollywood celebs. It will be in the London museum I think. What’s the first thing you’ll do when you get back? I will play again and party again man! Haha!

Giving up a rock star lifestyle to be more in touch with humanity? I was intrigued. It wasn’t long before I invited Travis over to my house for a decent chat. Back in 1996, Travis joined a band that at the time was receiving some national attention in Australia. After a year of solid touring as the drummer for The Living End, things began to skyrocket after the release of double A-side ‘Second Solution / Prisoner of Society’ had the boys breaking records as it became the highest selling single of the 90’s, scoring them an ARIA Award and a whole lot more attention both nationally and across the waves. After a full length album release became the second highest selling debut rock album in Australian history (currently third), The Living End had entered a world of rock stardom that saw them touring constantly and earning coin that most aspiring muso’s only dreamt about in garage jam sessions. For the guy that sat in my lounge room preferring to drink a coke over a beer though, living behind a celebrity status and a rock star image didn’t ever quite fit his ideals and despite the satisfaction

of earning money doing what he loved, Travis’ level of success had come with a certain level of discontentment. As the responsibilities of success kept the band drilled to a heavy timetable, Travis felt after many years on the road that the band’s direction was creating a deeper gap between not only himself and his sense of home, but also between the band and their fans, as well as between the band’s message and their own actions. “I think the other guys in The Living End were socially aware because they were writing about it in their songs, but I don’t think that they were particularly living it.” In a band heavily committed to touring and recording, personal time can be hard to come by, let alone the chance to truly be in touch with those outside of press meetings and hotel rooms. At the same time there are plenty of requests for your attention. “When you’re in a band like Living End you have people like football players and gangsters who all want to meet you, but at the same time you have charity organizations who ask that you donate your time to visiting sick children.” This caused Travis to start thinking about where the importance lay in his position and soon enough, after being approached by the Starlight Foundation, he began taking time out to visit kids in hospitals with life threatening illnesses, developing a kinship with one young AIDS patient in particular. “I remember one Christmas I was in LA feeling sorry for myself, the band had been touring constantly and we didn’t have much to talk about besides the gigs, so I decided to call Adam, a 13 year old cancer patient who I had visited a number of times. As it turned out I chatted with his dad for a while before he told me that Adam had passed on a few days earlier. He then proceeded to thank me for

feature spending time with his son and told me that it had meant the world to him.” This was a turning point for Travis and before too long he realized that he wished to pursue a life that kept him more in contact with people on an everyday level. Leaving The Living End come 2002, Travis spent some time searching for his calling whilst studying and working as an interior designer. Eventually he got in contact with White Lion, an organization that reaches out to young people involved in the Australian Youth Justice system, asking them how he could become involved. Thanks to his enthusiasm, Travis was given the opportunity to teach drums to kids in a youth prison and three years later he had moved from a one hour a week workshop to managing life performance and coaching programs in Victoria and Tasmania with around 42 staff on board. Still with a drive to achieve more, Travis then resigned to build his own program called Primal Beats and took it Australia wide. Using his childhood background and his experience as a successful musician, he combined them to create programs that encourage kids in less than fortunate circumstances. From there, Travis has decided to take his philosophies worldwide. Having personally experienced the gap between the music industry and its audience in the western world, he is now working on a documentary series that will encourage kids to follow their dreams and pursue their passion for music, no matter what limits society places on them. To reflect this he will focus on countries where music is used as a daily means of expression. “Music should be available to everyone. You look at shows like Idol where kids get up and they’re told that they’re too fat or that they should choose better clothing. I would dispute that, if you can sing well you should be encouraged. I don’t exactly think that Aretha Franklin was an amazing looking woman but man, can she sing. Look at Susan Boyle, what an amazing story. They all laughed at her because of the way she looked, but her talent shone through.” The idea behind Travis’ documentary is to show that throughout the world there are many places where music is encouraged, practiced and jammed out for daily satisfaction, despite lack of equipment or opportunity for fame and fortune. “I want to break down that distance between music and people and show that there are countries outside the west where people live and breathe music every day. Kids in places like Dili don’t have MTV at home, so they amuse themselves. How do

076 | beatmag.com

they do that? They do it with their own music. Many indigenous communities are the same.” So where does Bali fit into all this? “Initially I came to Bali with my girlfriend for some chill out time, but within days I had met Jerinx from Superman is Dead and loads of musicians. Seeing how dedicated these guys are to their music, even when they’re taping up their drumsticks with sticky tape and holding together their guitars with improvised scraps, it got me thinking that perhaps I should use Bali as a launching pad for the documentary whilst also focusing it on the rest of Indonesia, along with East Timor and many islands off the coast of Australia. I want to show how happy people can be when music is used as a daily form of expression” Beyond the documentary project, there is also a desire to expose bands from Bali to an Australian audience. “The music here is fantastic, the reggae, punk and scar bands in particular are on par with some of the best I’ve heard in the world. Places like Darwin, Cannes and Broome are only three hours from here and have great tourist markets and large Indonesian communities that would be perfect for these bands to play in. These bands could earn good money and gain great exposure.” To aid in this, Travis plans on recording compilation albums of some of Bali’s best acts, to then sell and spread the word back in Australia. Any money made would then be donated back to existing programs in Bali that are helping local communities. For his first trip to Bali, some big life plans have certainly spawned for Travis and despite only being here a short time; he seems convicted to set them in motion. Despite downplaying his previous position in a successful rock band, he has no doubt gained plenty of attention here because of it; especially amongst the dedicated punk lovers who grew up with The Living End on their speakers. Such notoriety is bound to make anyone feel familiar and accepted within a foreign place, though if addressed correctly, such a position will also allow him to give back to the musicians he has befriended; helping them to achieve greater things thanks to his own experience and connections. If you haven’t spotted Travis on a drum kit around town or hanging out down at Twice Bar in Kuta this time around, keep a look out for his return in April next year when he plans to get his projects moving. Make sure you stop him to say hello; he’s certainly not shy when it comes to having a chat… Cracker

The Rumours are true

Rumours Jl. Laksamana, Oberoi Tel. 738720

After 7 years in business, Rumours continues to exist as one of the leading restaurants on Oberoi’s ‘Eat Street’. Tosca takes a jalanjalan down there to check things out since the new make-over.

O

n occasion, an evening meal in Bali can become more ‘endurance’ than ‘enjoyment’. Someone with thin hair and thinner blood may disagree, but for the average unacclimatized visitor to the Island of Gods, the heat and humidity combined with a decent portion of hot food can cause all manner of sweat-related issues. For example, any lady with long hair out there will tell you, that in this heat it’s often a no-win situation: sit and develop a shiny face and a rivulet of sweat down your cleavage; or cool down under a fan while it whips your hair into your mouth, thus hindering food consumption, or at best, sticking it to your lip gloss. You’re often left wondering why you even bothered trying to look nice. So when approaching Rumours, my heart soared. At last, an evening meal to be enjoyed behind highly polished, floor-to-ceiling glass 90 | | beatmag.com 090

windows, while the cooling, calming temperatures of the brand new air conditioning allow you to eat comfortably, and look ok while doing it. These features are all part of a recent Rumours overhaul, which has resulted in an even more trendy, contemporary and minimalistic design. The floor-to-ceiling windows, along with a high roof and huge skylights near the front of the restaurant make the place feel light, open and airy, and allow customers to eat, drink and be merry under a twinkling night sky with A/C benefits. The color scheme is predominantly black and silver, with plenty of light-colored wooden tables, which are in keeping with the crisp and modern vibe. The walls are strikingly bare, with the exception of some funky, colorful, retro paintings of women from various decades over the 20th Century, such as Marilyn-esque 50s sex sirens. Fashion TV is

playing on the plasma, and the corner of the room is home to a pool table. The pool table is a surprise in a restaurant like this actually, but combine it with the low-lit island style bar surrounded by bar stools, and the funky mix of house beats and quirky pop tracks, and you’ve pretty much got the perfect place to line your stomach with some fantastic food before a night out on the town. Rumours really does get you in the mood. Turning my attention to the menu, I order the Seafood Salad for 29K to start. The salad is light and flavorsome, purely for the taste experience and not intended to fill a really hungry belly. It includes prawns, mussels, squid, capsicum and all the usual greenery, dressed in a zingy lemon vinaigrette, which complements the seafood nicely. Spotting a promotion section, aptly named ‘Sweet Dreams are Made of These’, I select the Grilled Salmon with Asian greens, wedges and a Pesto sauce for a more than reasonable 52K. The salmon is succulent and well-seasoned, and melts in the mouth as all good fish should. The highlight of this dish is the combination of the salmon with the pesto sauce, which really makes this dish by drawing all the elements together. Rumours is fantastic if you want a great meal on a bit of a budget, including a good steak. Though there are plenty of other types of dishes available, the owner is a beef wholesaler, so fantastic quality, imported Harvey A steak from the Land Down Under can be served up for a special price, such as 49K for the Sterling Striploin Special Meat, and 66K for a Sirloin or Tenderloin. If you want to splash out on an even higher standard of beef, you can find a 400g Wagyu Rump steak for 110K, or Rib Eye for 96K.The Rib Eye at Rumours is thickly

cut and served with fried potatoes and crunchy red and green peppers in a cranberry-based sauce, however, the range of sauces available are yours to choose from, making the steak/sauce combo Rumours’ most popular dish. Other sauces include black pepper, mushroom, béarnaise or rich gravy. The juicy medium-rare sample that Chef Eka cooked up for us is one of the best we’ve ever tried in Bali, and it was hard to resist a decent bottle of red wine to wash it down with. Rumours includes a wine promotion on its drinks list, and although we wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s ‘reasonable’ – not when you think about the price you can get the exact same wine for back home – but by Bali standards, it’s pretty good; 275K for a nice bottle of Aussie Jacob’s Creek, or 250K for a Spanish Caminilos Tinto. A range of tempting sugar rushes are available to put the full stop, or even the exclamation mark, on the end of your meal. We indulged in the Ricotta Cheesecake with Caramel Sauce, also from the promo list, and were treated to a light and creamy filling on a chocolate crumb base, perfectly balanced with a rich and luxurious sticky caramel sauce, all for 15K. With a statement as bold as “Everything you hear… it’s all true” on their place settings, Rumours has set its own standards pretty high… and appears to be living up to them rather well. New Color Windows W

hen speaking of abstraction in art, what comes to mind most often is the idea of visual language reduced to its core aesthetic elements, but the lack of a narrative does not necessarily mean the absence of a message, be it a message of theology or that of the universe, the message is mainly left for the spectator to interpret. Peter Ditmar’s works root from a spiritual inspiration of a Hindu-Buddha cosmology and eastern philosophies. In this exhibition, the image of a window is utilized – respectively embodying motion and stillness and further adding the notion of void by setting his “color windows” in three-dimensional “void” squares. rtful inspiration can come from anywhere. One example is the extraordinary droplet photographs by Stephan Max Reinhold, inspired simply by observing rain drops in a swimming pool. Never before has a natural phenomena as simple as a drop of water been depicted in such a magnificent display. Max describes his form of art as “Liquid Art” photography and can be considered as a fusion of art and science, comprising elements of beauty and education and creating a thoughtprovoking and gentle reminder of the importance of water to our very existence. The World is My Stage

Jakarta, 17 December 1975 dadipujiadireza@yahoo.com, 081999028932.

Conceptual Basics

It is every hopeful actor’s dream to one day make it big, either on stage or on screen. To become successful within both mediums, not only in front of the audience but also behind the scenes as a screen writer and director is Dadi’s proof of his passion within these fields. His eagerness for entertaining began from a very young age, performing with a children’s theatre group on television back in the days when the only station available was TVRI. With age, Dadi’s devotion to performance never faltered and led him to screenplay writing and directing, giving him the chance to work with the famous Indonesian director Slamet Rahardjo. Dadi’s screen plays always pertain a social message, intended to open the eyes of the audience in awareness of the many social difficulties faced by people today.

104 | beatmag.com

Storming the Stage

Performing in various theatres from a young age helped to kickstart Dadi’s theatrical directing/ writing career, which began back in ‘99 when he wrote and directed a performance for the AGA theatre titled “Cerita Di Balik Layar”. A few years later, Dadi attempted to take his talents to the big screen and in ’02 he began his on screen directorial/writing debut for the independent movie titled “Terasing”. In ’03 Dadi’s script titled “GOL” was one of the best in the National Monolog Script Writing Competitions being adapted into a book titled “Sphink Triple X”. Two years later, his script “Pengagum Bintang” became the 1st runner up in the Teenage Drama Script Writing Competition held by Surabaya’s Art Council. Dadi is currently busy collaborating with the Look At Heart (LAH) Theatre.
