Welcome to another brand new year. 2013 had its highs and lows, but thankfully mainly highs. 2014 looks set to continue in the same fashion as Bali continues its upward trajectory to better things, and as we went to print on New Year’s Eve, all the photo action from the big night [NYE] will be in the next edition of The Beat unfortunately. But it’s all good; it will be something to look forward to. We hope you all had a wonderful holiday period and especially New Year’s Eve. So what can we expect in 2014? With a lot of luck [perhaps] the new airport will be finished. There are a number of people now complaining about the time it has taken so far to get where it is today. And others complaining about the shoddy workmanship etc, but as they say, you can never judge a job until it is finished so we will all just have to wait and see what the conclusion is there. Traffic. The traffic is always a concern in these parts and as we saw during the recent festive season between Christmas and New Year the traffic once again [or still] is a major problem to be concerned about and addressed. As more visitors arrive to our shores every year [3.5 million are targeted in 2014], the bigger the problem we are facing. The new road being built from the Nakula intersection to Denpasar and on to Gilimanuk could help to pull traffic from the Kerobokan congestion but a lot more needs to be done – and quickly. Next year is also an election year which raises many prospects as Indonesia looks to the future as a young democracy. We touched off on the rise of the middle class in this issue’s feature and Indonesia’s ever changing socio-economic demographics will be sure to play a big part in this year’s elections. In the more immediate future, Bali will wind down from this year’s high season and after the first week of January, we’ll probably be enjoying clearer roads. And that’s always nice. So on behalf of the entire team here at The Beat, we’d like to wish you all a happy New Year!

ENDANGERED BALI STARLINGS WERE SET FREE on THE BIRDS SANCTUARY ISLAND A pair of Bali starlings were set free at the Friends of the National Parks Foundation’s (FNPF) bird sanctuary on Nusa Penida Island on December 30. The starlings, originally from West Bali National Park were hoped to bring a new blood line to more than 100 starlings that are already living in the sanctuary. Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry, Zulkifli Hasan also marked his attendance in a special ceremony near FNPF’s conservation center to release the scarce birds. FNPF is a non-profit organization that helps protecting the wildlife and its habitat, as well as supporting the local communities.

BIWA Bali ‘Walk the Talk’ with a Christmas Charity Bazaar On December 1, Bali International Women’s Association (BIWA) organized a special Christmas Charity Bazaar with the theme of ‘Walk the Talk’ at Lotte Mart Wholesale, Kuta. The cordial event which ran from 9am until 6pm was teeming with over 200 stalls with great products, delectable food and beverages, as well as children’s corner and other entertainment. Prize coupon holders swarmed the venue with great enthusiasm to win the raffles and door prize with the coupon they had bought for 100k beforehand at selected venues all around Bali. Supported by many sponsors including the beat magazine, the event went off successfully and all proceeds will go to BIWA Social Welfare projects aimed at goals essential to the wellbeing of the community, especially women and children.

HARD ROCK HOTEL BALI “ THERE’S NO HUNGER CAMPAIGN” The new year is coming and Hard Rock Hotel celebrated it with taking part in a global campaign againts children hunger and poverty. They collected more than 600 cans of food from the guests and staff in the last two weeks. They later gave them to more than 120 children and caretakers from two orphanages in Denpasar. Working hard to bring into reality the “Imagine There’s No Hunger” campaign together with the Yoko Ono Lennon Foundation, Hard Rock hopes this event can encourage people to donate their money for poor children’s school fees as well as daily pocket money.

Well, it has been the Brother’s third consecutive year being the Number 1 DJs in Australia in inthemix DJ Awards. The Hollywood Hills has also treated them well, by being the first international act to sign to Cash Money Records, and in return, Matt and Chris took up DJ residencies for Tao Group worldwide. February 2011 marked their first World Tour with 35 shows scheduled within a period of 90 days, covering almost all four corners of the world. Back at home, the Stafford Brothers had also started running their own reality TV show since January that year entitled The Stafford Brothers on Australia’s Fox8, broadcasting their DJing lifestyle to the masses. Riri Mestica was born and raised in Jakarta and started his musical journey as a guitarist. At the age of 17, he moved to Europe, where he continued his exploration of music in a small bar in Montreux, Switzerland, “Mayfair Café”. After a few years shaping his DJ techniques, in the year 2000, he arrived back in Jakarta to explore the Indonesian music scene that he hadn’t really experienced till then. It took only three months until Riri got involved in a brand new club called Retro. Together with his fellow DJ buddy, Romy, they made Retro the busiest club in town for many years.

Mestica’s latest single, “Last Call” has set itself to be the local anthem and has had tons of requests at clubs. ‘Rusty Guitar’, is a full throttle electro house track, which he produced in two days from a raw concept with DJ Kono showing off his high production skills. Riri has DJ’d alongside the likes of Cressida, Marco V, Ferry Corsten, Dash Berlin, Kaskade, Tocadisco, Felix da Housecat. But his achievements don’t end there. In 2007 he was crowned No.1 DJ in Indonesia’s at the Paranoia Awards and won the AMI Award for the best Dance Track for ‘Fadeaway’. Accompanying another award for Best Live PA of the year 2007.

It takes a certain set of skills to become a Ministry of Sound resident DJ and in each of these departments Igor Project catches the eye. Winning the Mixmag competition was surely the best thing that happened to Igor since it had been his turning point and got the recognition needed to gig at clubs throughout the world. During that sweet finals party Igor kept the room full with people for the solid three hours from 4pm until 7pm. This charismatic and highly skilled DJ has been recognized globally for his technical abilities and selection prowess, winning, most notably, the 2011 Mixmag and Ministry of Sound DJ competition. Igor was even recruited as a professor at DJ Academy in London where he used to be one of the students. This guy is definitely no stranger to the rigors of life as a well known and highly sought after DJ. Propelled by an ever expanding and impressive catalogue of tracks he has produced such as “Jazz in the Jungle”, “Lisboa”, and “Maderia”, Igor’s musical aptitude and innate DJ senses provide him with the perfect tools to create incredible room shaking house music.

The two were already DJing back then in high school. After many encounters, they found what they had in common – the love for New York-style house, and Soul Clap was born. Together, they started messing with stuff around the city of Boston and organized the highly praised Dancing on the Charles, and every Wednesday, they also hosted the town’s longest running techno night, Midweek Techno.

Through training under high-profile DJs and producers that often dropped by a vinyl collection where they lived, the duo quickly mastered the skills needed for festival tours and clubs. They also took up a teaching position for dance music at Tufts University, close to Boston. It was like a utopia for them. Influenced by New York-style house and disco tunes, Soul Clap joined the Wolf + Lamb family back in 2007, and since then have been releasing remixes for works of R Kelly and Chris Isaak amongst others which became the slowburning anthems of its era and genre. Eventually in 2009, they dropped their first EP “The Definition” on Airdrop Records and in 2012, they released their debut album entitled EFUNK, which stands for ‘Everybody’s Freaky Under Nature’s Kingdom’.

Geisha in Japanese means female entertainer. Momo (vocalist), Aan (drum), Amek (keyboard), Roby (guitar), and Bernard (bass) formed this band together in late 2003. They chose this name because geisha is a high class entertainer. This pop rock band got people’s attention when Geisha made it to the final of A Mild Live Wanted 2007 music competition. They sang “Untuk Selamanya” with D’Masiv and the song made it on the A Mild Live Wanted 2007 compilation album.

Geisha describes their music as a fusion of several different elements. It is a unique mixture of rock and fast beats. Geisha gained popularity and dropped their next singles including the very famous “Kamu yang Pertama”, “Takkan Pernah Ada”, “Cinta dan Benci”, and many more. This Pekanbaru band had success with their fourth album Seleksi Hits which contained three newly recorded songs and nine hit songs from their previous albums which was released in 2012. They received AMI Awards for The Best Duo/Group and the Best Album category in the same year. They have their own fan group “My Geisha” and if you really enjoy their music you could sign up to that.

No wonder honeymooning couples, gangs of college kids, and families come to the island for unforgettable experiences.

Last year the number of domestic tourist who came to Bali was more than six million. In the beginning of 2013 there was a 30 percent growth in arriving passengers at Ngurah Rai International Airport compared to the same period the previous year. Many were domestic tourists. This is actually a very good sign of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic development. In 2012 the Gross National Product (GNP) growth of Indonesia reached of 6.23 percent which is one of the highest in Asia after China (7.8 percent). According to Aviliani, general secretary of the National Economic Committee, the Indonesian peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s considerable consumption is the main cause of this increasing GNP growth. This means that the average Indonesians are becoming wealthier since they can consume more than just their basic needs. Since there is an increasing demand from the emerging middle class, the market naturally supplies it. Nowadays we can easily find restaurants, hotels, amusement parks, and budget airplane ticket promos that cater almost exclusively to domestic tourists. According to some reports, there are approximately 50 million Indonesians who have the economic ability to spend Rp 20 million on expenses. This number is almost twice the population of Malaysia and ten times the population of Singapore, a very large

market indeed. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no wonder food, entertainment, and hospitality industries are marketing to this demographic. Businesses that target domestic tourists incorporate a strategy that utilizes cooperation with banks to attract consumers with credit card discounts. It works because there are a lot of Indonesians who have several credit cards. Each bank gives different offers so these people have to carry wallets full of cards to get those discounts. Consumption by the middle class not only fulfills their desire to own a particular product or have a particular experience, but also as a way of enhancing their prestige and a Bali vacation fulfills those desires. The beaches around the island are also magnificent with a plethora of photos flooding social media platforms which advertises the island to people in similar demographics further. In many ways, the increase in domestic tourism is also a generational phenomenon. Young people are getting better educations than previous generations and thus are more economically mobile. All in all, domestic tourism strongly correlates with the economic condition of Indonesiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s middle class. If their money is not all used up for basic needs like food, clothes, or household items, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll spend cash on vacation. FEATURE Tell us a little about yourself Ochy and make sure you mention the beat. I come from Bandung, West Java and have 100% pure Sundanesse blood. But I’ve spent my teenage years in Malang, East Java. I always moved from one place to another, and from 2010 till now, I’ve been right here in Bali. I have a major in economics and marketing and I joined The Beat Magazine in 2011 as a sales and marketing person. While I was busy doing marketing for The Beat Magazine during the day, I would spend about three hours in the night singing with my band in some venues.

How did you become a singer? My mom put me in a music school when I was six years old. It was a classic piano class, but I always cheated and went to vocal class instead of my classic piano class (then my mom realized that I had talent as a singer). When I was 13, my first “gig” as a singer was in a high school singing competition and I joined a band. I had more performances with some other bands in college since my university had an annual “Jazz Goes to Campus” event. These days I have my own band called Ochy and the Band which includes Diki (drum/cajon), Nano (guitar), and Arif (bass) and we play at a number of venues around Bali.

Any big plans for your band in 2014? We want to release our own song (some indie record company offered me a deal) and perform in The Beat Party 2014 (what do you think?)

What are your influences? Jazz and groove.

What song is stuck in your head right now? “Tears Dry On Their Own” by Amy Winehouse.

If you could have one band open for you, who would that be? It would have to be Earth Wind & Fire.

What do you think of the potential civil war in South Sudan? When you have oil, you will have no peace.

ome to a string of establishments that are known chiefly for their throbbing nightlife, the infamous Jalan Legian is often overlooked for dining options. However, Vi Ai Pi club located right in the midst of all the action, is looking to change all that, with a top notch menu of lip-smacking local and Western style fare, super friendly service and live music, all housed in a breezy upstairs venue. A short hop up the entrance steps reveals an open sided dining room with the large central bar in the centre and main stage directly above the staircase. Due for completion early next year an upstairs mezzanine club lounge complete with bar and karaoke rooms is currently underway, upping the ante to two floors of Vi Ai Pi fun. A newly tweaked menu courtesy of Italian kitchen maestro Federico Comparin features a selection of mouth watering home made pizzas, pastas, bread and desserts to cover everything from lunch to dinner and beyond. Fresh salads and bar snack style nibbles sit alongside a host of Italian mains and Asian favourites, not to mention tasty pizzas and a super sweet dessert section. Fat prawns sit in a creamy leek and potato broth that blurs the lines between a mash and a soup. A few drizzles of pesto mixed with crunchy nuts complete this hearty starter that is perfect for the drizzly days.

Both Irving and Sydney put their best foot forward to beguile Richie in their own respective ways. If you know what the FBI‘s controversial anti-corruption operation called Abscam was all about, this movie is for you.

The story is based on a failed mission by US Navy Seals in 2005 codenamed Operation Red Wings. Marcus Luttrell, the only survivor of the operation, is portrayed by Mark Wahlberg. The operators are assigned a special mission to monitor a village in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province for activities of a Taliban leader. The operation goes bad which results in the death of 19 American servicemen. Peter Berg is pretty good at action movies and this will probably be a good one for those itching for a war movie.

Based on the autobiography of Jordan Belfort, DiCaprio takes on the lead role, the wolf of Wall Street, whose predatory manipulating instincts and reckless adventures with vices at first allow him to be on top of the world and making 50 million dollars a year at the age of 26 by selling penny stocks. Soon his vices get the better of him. Mind you again that this is Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s fifth collaboration, so expect great things.

Even for such a game-changing MC as Eminem it takes some serious chops to release a track and name it “Rap God”, but by the time we get around to it (track nine on Mather’s second selftitled long player) there can be few who wouldn’t be nodding along in agreement. Yep, at 41 this guy remains the real deal – a white boy done good in the world of gangsta rap who knows how to work a hook, and can still spit out nearly 100 words in a supersonic flow that lasts just 15 seconds. That’s six-and-a-half words per second. Yes. Per second. Rap God? No doubt. A staggering thirteen years since the first Marshall Mathers LP, and after a number of misadventures as his various alter-egos, it’s clear that MM is the truest representation of this multifaceted Detroit rapper – the actual real Slim Shady if you like. Much like MM1, MM2 is an intensely personal and highly impassioned walkthrough of Mathers’ psyche – the musical stand-in for a psychologist’s chez longue. From the seven bitter minutes of opener “Bad Guy”, where we find Stan’s little brother out for revenge against his doomed bigger brother’s hero/tormentor, and on through the uncomfortable “Survivor” and “So Much Better” (if you were dead) there is no let up, no apologies, and precious little humour or lightheartedness to be found. Stylistically it’s an album that harks back to the golden age of mid to late 90’s gritty gangsta rap that’s full of mini skits, reworked samples, and delicate, almost unnoticeable flourishes, like drizzling rain and thunder claps set to tinkling piano riffs and shotgun sound effects. Lead single “Bezerk” goes even further back, with a Beastie Boys homage that mixes “Fight for your Right” kicks with classic rock samples and suitably nostalgic vocals “This s*&t’s about to kick off/this party looks whack/ let’s take it back to straight hip hop/and start it from scratch”. Produced by Rick Rubin, on paper at least it looks like a banker, yet for some reason it fails to gain traction. At other the points MM2 is a little too schizophrenic for its own good-so far… It plays out like six different songs roughly cut together by a cop out record scratch, and the brilliantly upbeat duet with Kendrick Lamarr “Love Game” is completely misplaced and would have been far better as a Slim Shady cut. Of course none of this really matters, as Eminem is always going to be fascinating in a way that not many other rappers are, let’s just hope we don’t have to wait another thirteen years for MM3. Dan Ashcroft is a closet hood rat.

Samsung 105’’ Curved UHD TV Samsung recently unveiled the world’s largest and most curved UHD TV. Measuring 105 inches, the display features a 11 million pixel or 5120 x 2160 resolution with a 21:9 aspect ratio. It promises images that are two times as vivid when viewed from the side and optimal viewing from any angle thanks to its ‘Quadramatic Picture Engine’ which processes and outputs all content at UHD-level quality regardless of the source. The TV will be officially revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January of next year, so stay tuned for details on pricing and availability after that.

Samsung Unveils Redesigned Smartphone GamePad Though its first mockup drew obvious inspiration from the Xbox controller, Samsung unveils its totally revamped Smartphone Game Pad. Moving from a white paint job with familiar button coloring, the newly designed black gradient game pad plays hosts to a few cosmetic as well as technical enhancements. On the outside, Samsung swaps its raised analog sticks for a concaved one, and replaces the A, X, Y and B buttons with dots pointing to the four ordinal directions rather than your typical cardinal points. Under its hood so to speak, the Bluetooth compatible gaming accessory works with smart phones running Android 4.1 or higher with screen sizes ranging from 4 to 6.3 inches. Samsung is also said to introduce its Mobile Console app with up to 35 titles available at launch. Rumor has it that the updated game pad is currently available in select European markets, but the brand declined to provide specifics on where and for how much.

GIZMOS Monster 24K Headphones Preview

Monster will soon release its latest pair of limitededition headphones, the 24K. They feature Monster’s 24K sound, DJ-style swiveling padded ear cups with plush cushions, and in-line audio controls. As the name would imply, they appear in an all-gold color configuration, and were realized in partnership with hip-hop artist Meek Mill. Look for them when they release on December 15 at a cost of $280 USD through select sellers including Monster’s web store.

LG Chromebase All-In-One Computer

LG recently previewed its Chromebase computer ahead of its official debut at the Consumer Electronics Show taking place next month. The all-in-one computer runs on Google‘s Chrome OS, which allows users to have all of their cloudsynced content at the ready when they log in, making it convenient for public places. It packs 2GB of RAM, a 16GB of solid state storage drive, and a thus-far unnamed Intel Celeron processor into a 1080p IPS display while connectivity includes the standard USB, audio jacks, network and HDMI input that lets the computer double as a second monitor. The computer comes with a keyboard, mouse, speakers and webcam. LG hasn’t given a price or firm release date just yet, but expect more details after CES.

Gellish is one of the new breed of dedicated nail salons. A sweet, tidy space on Jalan Legian, it is painted a vibrant pink and features just three nail stations, two recliners and a nail bar. The proprietor herself is a stylish Singaporean lady who rules her salon with a sharp eye out for all the failings of many a spa and salon; well presented, polite staff who are trained to do their job perfectly and an eye on the hygiene standards which includes sterilizing the instruments and keeping the place smelling lovely and looking shiny and new. Gelish, the polish that inspired the name of the nail bar, is a shellac process which has taken the world by storm. Now available in the entire colour spectrum, the application involves a special polish that literally shines like shellac and stays in place for a good two weeks, possibly more. Gellish offers this service, which appeals to those who are fed up with chipped nails that lose their lustre in mere days and also the more clumsy among us who invariably smudge the polish before the top coat is applied. The shellac or Gelish manicure is applied in stages and dried with an infra red light which dries the layers immediately, eliminating the smudge factor. The finish is shiny, clean and stays in place for a good

two weeks. Taking it off is a bit of a process but everything comes with a price. Gellish also offers a very polished standard manicure and pedicure as well as gel nails which last a lot longer and actually lengthen the nail and strengthen it while the gel coat is on. Although this is long lasting and looks great, the maintenance puts some off, while others become completely addicted. Gellish is part of the new wave of nail bars, dedicated to hands and feet. A wonderful reflexology is also offered for those who want to take a package and really want the full treatment. You can be guaranteed to walk out of their with your polish firmly in place, shaped, beautified hands and feet, happy to put either foot forward. Best of all, the prices are incredible and while this stylish little nail salon is still in its infancy, the deals on offer means you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pay much more than the price of a beach manicure or a local salon treatment.
