Another exciting couple of weeks coming up in Bali with more amazing shows than you can point a veritable stick at. With the dry season appearing to go on and on this year it would seem the big shows are doing the same! Watch out this weekend with Café del Mar kicking off their party agenda with Stanton Warriors on Friday and Nick Warren on Sunday. There is a heap more on over this weekend too including Richie Stephens and Masia One belting out some great reggae at Hard Rock Café on Friday night, then on Saturday at various times Afro Bros are bringing some Latin and afro house and hip hop beats to Mirror in Petitenget, POOLCLVB returns to Mrs Sippy for some frolicking tunes in the Seminyak sun, Omnia has a surely rockin’ gig with Kryder down on the cliff and Woobar finishes off the weekend with Lost Dessert. But if you are looking for something a little more sedate you could mosey over to the ladies’ BIWA Anniversary Market at Lotte near Benoa on Sunday to snap up some bargains and good times, while helping the charity at the same time. Yep, that is always a good option. Next Tuesday Nov 5 is an interesting one too. Not only is it the Melbourne Cup during the day, but also Ku De Ta is having one of their bigger shows of the year with Glitterbox coming in from Ibiza to blow your socks off! Check that one for sure. Check inside for all the details of the events coming our way over the next two weeks. Check our website thebeatbali.com for the daily and coming events and probably the most update of anywhere, our IG account, @ thebeat.bali updated daily. On behalf of everyone at The Beat, I would like to offer our condolences to the family and many friends of Syaffri Soewardi who was the very well respected chief graphics at the beat for many years and a very handy fella to have around when reptiles appeared unexpectedly. He lost his fight with cancer on October 27. May you rest in peace, Syaffri.

SCOOP Brace yourself for the much anticipated Omnia Moon and Sun event with Steve Aoki!

If you’re looking for the ultimate madhouse experience, and are dedicated to party like you’ve never partied before, it’d be best to mark your calendar on November 15th. Steve Aoki needs no introduction, with his Grammy nominations, endless world tours and playing the industry’s most respected festivals and venues, his bangers such as the “Pursuit of Happiness” remix, “Warp 1.9”, “In the House” and “ILYSM” have made him an electronic artist power player. We’re talking notoriously hype and energy driven sets with over the top on-stage antics to no end. The Dim Mak Records founder boasts the release of over 250 records, including collaborations with Kid Cudi, Tiesto, Afrojack and Iggy Azalea. So cue the champagne showers, cake tossing and party floats… this is one night that you’ll want to live forever. Be sure to “Beat down” (pun intended) to the stunning cliff edges of Omnia.

Mid-November madness at the W Two big cats are scheduled to hit the W bunker in the span of five days in mid-November! Stay tuned for the technical mixing skills of James Zabiela on the 16th and Stil Vor Talent’s record label boss Oliver Koletzki on the 21st. Part of what makes Zabiela so popular is the close attention and ability of finding melodies that fit with each other like pieces of a puzzle, his musical background makes him one of techno’s most colourful, varied and vibrant selectors, with an audience that spans across genres and audiences. As for Koletzki, his tracks and general presence in the house and techno scene has strong sentimental value, with his label Stil Vor Talent releasing some of the defining records in house and progressive techno for over a decade, plus Andre Homen is in support on the night. Catch either, or both, of these two gigs at the W bunker for some awesome electronic beats!

Bronson Meidi and Ketut Tia

Win the Rip Curl GromSearch 2019

Hundreds of ripping young surfers from Bali, Java, Malaysia, Australia, America and other countries descended on Medewi Beach, Bali, last weekend, 19-20 October, to compete in the 16th annual Rip Curl GromSearch. Some of the best young surfers in Indonesia put their skills to the test against red hot travelling competitors in all divisions including Under 16’s, 14’s and Under 12’s with the addition of the Super Groms division (under 10 years old). Bronson Meidi and Ketut Tia took the victory at the end of a huge weekend at the rocky beach

of Medewi, where three-to-four foot waves stretched along the famous point break making for the perfect canvas for all the competitors. Bronson Meidi from the under 16 division scored a total 15,40 points in the final with a solid 8,00 and a 7,40 to take the title against his rivals Varun Tandjung (13,90), Pajar Aria (12,77) and Raphael Castro (10,00). In the Under 16 girl’s division, Ketut Tia’s outstanding performance saw her cruising her way to 1st place with a score of 13,67, followed by Serena Boccato (8,80), Lin Li, (8,77) and Georgia May (7,43).

FEATURE

Meidi and Tia will both represent Indonesia at the Rip Curl International Research, where the top performing under-16 surfers from around the globe will face off at a top-secret location to be announced early next year. A quick congratulations is also duly noted for the best air of the day by Abi Mu Amar (Medewi), the best manover by Rahman Hidayat (Medewi) and for the winners Febri Angriwagan from the Under 14s, French surfer Enoha Le Pieres from

the Under 12s and the adorable Lidia Kato and Leo Matchett from the Under 10s division. During the competition, Rip Curl also organized beach games for the kids, beach clean ups, planting baby coconut trees and lessons about recycling conducted by Dua Kala Recycle. It’s so inspiring to see the youngsters feeling so passionate about surfing and mother earth, here’s to another year of great surfing in Bali!

Jatiluwih Rice Fields

the UNESCO listed emerald green gem of Bali Yes, South Bali has it all, including insufferable traffic jams and crowds. If you want to escape the chaos of the southern overdeveloped enclaves, there is probably no better place to visit than Jatiluwih. It’s a a relatively short 1.5 hour long trip and you will be compensated for the bumpy car ride with a lots of wow factor. Jatiluwih means “truly marvelous” and the valley overdelivers on that term: you will be rewarded with spectacular views of centuries old rice terraces that will challenge your ability to describe the many shades of green. Jatiluwih received the UNESCO World Heritage Status for its ancient rice growing culture and you

44

www.thebeatbali.com

will absolutely get why by viewing the panorama from the narrow, serpentine 18km long road. It will make you feel like traveling on a different planet, but to really take it all in you have to get out of the car and go for a rice field trek. The best vistas open up when you’re away from the “main drag”, follow the water as it runs through the bamboo pipes and it will be just you and nature. You will be surprised to see how very few people will be there, except for a few tourists from the nearby hotels, you will have the stunning beauty just to yourself. The terraces are located in the central Bali near the Batukaru mountain and if you’re adventurous

enough a day trip from the South is even doable on a scooter. The area is remote and requires a bit of an effort to explore, but it also weeds out the hordes of the new breed Instagram tourists ruining the scenery and the vibe elsewhere in Bali that is just as scenic, but way more accessible. We recommend you do not join the guided tour, as they’re short and not very informative and just park the car at one of the many pull outs and follow the narrow grassy paths connecting the terraces and wander around on your own.

There are a lots of charming small villages nearby, where you can experience the everyday authentic life in Bali, absolutely tout-free. This trip is fantastic for introverts, people who hate Instagram tourism and anyone who appreciates unspoiled nature. [Words & Photos by Vero]

A Beautiful Mess, indeed

Balian band releases a new video, Beautiful Mess that has projected them into instant social media success.

Balian has been around the traps for some time. They could have been referred to as part-timers at moments over the ten years of their existence, but there has always been a strong connection with, in particular, Eddy Strange, the vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of the band and the Bali rock music scene, namely being stand-in guitarist for local rockers, Navicula, and another local notable, us, the beat magazine. I recall Strange almost dying on a Beat Party stage a few years ago, but that’s another story, but strangely enough, a time very close to this story. Here TB speaks with the Balian vocalist, Eddy Strange about their new hit video, Beautiful Mess and what the song’s all about―mental illness.

46

www.thebeatbali.com

So, you just released a new video last week which has now achieved over 130k views. Has that sudden popularity caught you by surprise? Eddy Strange: I certainly didn’t expect such a fast response. Beautiful Mess is directed by Erick Est and features two well-known artists - JRX and Nora, who recently married. I think these factors have had an impact on the number of hits and engagement. Yes it seems having those two involved at the front and Est behind the camera hasn’t hurt at all. What’s the song about and who came up with the video concepts? The song is about a relationship that spirals out of control and ends up becoming abusive. Part of the goal is to raise awareness of mental health

FEATURE that they are not alone, nor forgotten. If it gives just one person the strength to get through a hard moment... then it’s been worthwhile.

issues in romantic relationships and highlight the often overlooked male victims of emotional and physical abuse. Regarding the video concept, some of the ideas came from stories that I had heard from friends and their experiences. They were kind of serious and disturbing situations, but I thought that they could be powerfully portrayed through music and video. I gave a list of these short dramatic sequences to Erick and from there he created the overall story, as well as adding his own ideas and a few little twists. I think he was able to create something quite special, it is impressive that he was able to fit in such a complex plot within the duration of the song. There’s some kind of twist in the plot of the video, right? There is indeed. When Erick first suggested the idea I wasn’t so into it, but the twist turned out great. Wouldn’t want to give away too much for either videos, but some people mentioned a likeness to a scene in “Joker”. Huge coincidence as they were both released at about the same time, we certainly had no idea of their plot when we filmed the video back in May. Well I guess people have to watch both to be able to enjoy that point. Do you think mental health issues are on the increase? Besides sharing our love of music, part of our intentions was to raise awareness of domestic abuse and mental health. Doing it through music and film is hopefully one of the more engaging ways in bring up the topic. Watching the acting take place was very confronting at times, we didn’t want to become dark and morbid but you could still see the stress it placed on the actors in certain scenes. Sometimes I feel society, at least in certain parts of the world hesitates to openly discuss the issue. Hopefully our song can reassure people in traumatic situations to know

What has the success of the video brought to the band so far? Any strange, wonderful things happening? I think it has given us the opportunity to extend our music to a wider audience. It’s strange in the sense that ‘Beautiful Mess’ was recorded in 2014 and had been sitting, rotting away on my computer hard drive. Lucky I didn’t lose the data or there would be no video here in 2019, that’s for sure. It’s possibly going to give us more opportunities to share more songs, we have enough for an album and if it feels right we will put something out before the New Year. Regarding strange and wonderful... a few things spring to mind, my friend Dave hearing BM blaring out of the sound system in front of Ace Hardware, or Aaron receiving messages from a bikers gang requesting to use the song

for an anniversary documentary. Random stuff that wouldn’t happen if it was just sitting there on the hard drive, feels good to be finally doing something. I think it’s the responsibility of someone that creates art, to take care of it and put it out there. Give the art a chance to be heard or seen. Where can people catch Balian live around Bali? We occasionally play at Gimme Shelter and Twice Bar. If people follow the instagram (@ balianband) then they’ll see us post before a gig. Check the video of Balian’s Beautiful Mess on Youtube and take the tune for a spin on Spotify.

DJ Story #14 Bali Resident DJs DJ Ari Bali

Hi Ari, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? 2010. At that time my job was assistant manager at Echo Beach House in Canggu. I compiled a playlist of songs for the venue when I was asked to replace the DJ who wasn’t present. That’s where my gig started and at that moment I decided to take professional DJ school along with offers of events .. It worked! Tell us your background in music. I grew up in the era of Guns N Roses & Nirvana, classic pop, funk and disco 80-90s. I call it the generation that absored the most lines of time. 70s to millennials I enjoyed it. I used to play drums in a band because my friends saw me knocking on tables and they said I had a good beat. So this is all about music taste and having a good beat hahaha.

Favourite styles to spin? I like all types of music and all genres, I love it. But because I come from a beach restaurant that from morning till closing played chilled out, electric pop, buddha bar, pop 80s, funk & soul, this became my typical style. I also love nu-disco, deep-house and chill out/lounge. Current Bali residencies Echo Beach Club, Scallywags (Gili Air & Trawangan), Azul, Tiigo. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” I love Bali and my hobby is my job. Thankyou Ari, see you around the island. Where can we follow you? Lamb Medallion Chef: I Wayan Widiarta

If you’ve jollied down Eat Street, you may have noticed a charming contemporary building with stadium style seating to people watch, and the geometric brass exterior that resembles honey combs. In this edition of Chef’s Recommendation, we checked out the buzz around one of Oberoi’s famed and favourite, Char Char Bar and Grill. Having been escorted to their stunning al fresco dining area, which features a convertible style roof (how cool is that!) and given a delectably extensive menu that leaves you spoilt for choice. Head Chef Mr. I Wayan Widiarta highly recommends his current best-selling dish, the Lamb Medallion, which is priced at IDR 155,000 ++. At first impression, we’ve got to say that the presentation was stunning; featuring grilled Australian Lamb medallion cuts, cherry tomatoes, asparagus and accompanied by black olive tapenade, potato puree, a parmesan crisp and red wine sauce. All the flavours truly complimented one another, from the tenderness and juiciness of the lamb to the play with olive tapenade, red wine sauce and fresh elements of the asparagus and cherry tomatoes. All in all, we had an incredible dinner and evening. We left thoroughly impressed with their food and beverage quality, value and genuine attentive service.

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

Financially you will stay in comfortable zone, it’s the professional hurdles that will not leave you alone. Working under others will be a challenge. Those who’ve been pursuing certain avenues, not out of personal choice but perhaps through external pressures or the need to please others, may have an opportunity to pursue a calling or direction more in keeping with their true, authentic self. This can also be a period in which you’ve to deal with people in positions of power and authority, which is only likely to prove problematic. Favorable Dates : 3, 6, 10 Favorable Colors : Red & Green

This period will be a good omen for financial questions. It would be more like fiscal generosity that comes to you because you have worked your way into deserving it. More money is very likely to be coming your way. Things seem to be going well for the person that you have your heart set on. If you think the relationship is fabulous, be sure and find out “where your partner is” with the state of affairs. If you are not in a committed relationship, you need to be open to other possibilities, however. Favorable Dates : 2, 4, 11 Favorable Colors : Red & Green

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Even though something was lost, something still remains. Look at what can be salvaged. There are new alternatives to be explored within the loss. Favorable Dates : 4, 8, 13 FavorableColors : Red & Yellow

There’s a very good chance that you are working far too hard for far too little recognition and money. You may need to look outside your own network for helpful information in how the work you do is done elsewhere - this could lead to some very interesting realizations.Your financial situation is likely to take a turn for the better. If you’re in the market for some big ticket items, don’t scrimp on your homework. Follow your “instincts” about what is best for your health, work and love. Seek out mentors with more information than you have. Favorable Dates : 1, 8, 10 Favorable Colors : Red & White

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Your efforts on the final touches will bring you material gain, approval and recognition by others. You will experience a great sense of achievement and it is well deserved. Gallery Opening : Original Gyotaku works by Desmond Thain

2 November Drifter Uluwatu

Drifter Uluwatu presents their gallery opening of Original Gyotaku works by Desmond Thain on November 2nd. Born in Honolulu Hawaii, Desmond moved to Japan to enable a true understanding of his deep cultural roots through art. His inspiration for each art work is not through simple and passive observations, but rather an intimate relationship with nature, with focuses on anatomical correctness that is not often seen in marine art. The Japanese fish printing style known as “Gyotaku is not only an art form, but was once an important method for fishermen to record their catch during a pre-camera era. Today, we see it as a fascinating, nature oriented technique that both honours and documents fish. For more information check out @driftersurfshop on Facebook.

CD REVIEW

8/10

New York state of mind

Skyzoo & Pete Rock Retropolitan Breathing new life into a long-past era of music can be a tricky sell, but this new collaboration between legendary producer Pete Rock and young blood MC Skyzoo is a skillfully crafted homage to mid 90s NYC-based hip-hop. The album wastes no time setting out its stall, with Skyzoo proclaiming: “Welcome to the rebirth of the city/it’s a love letter and a wakeup call/all at the same time” on opening gambit “Glorious”. Its jazzy beats and smooth lyrical flows further confirm where this album is going – namely a rose-tinted stroll down the mean streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan circa 1993, before gentrification and the homogenization of hip-hop culture brought the era to an end.

Arguably it’s the dreamily vintage “It’s All Good” and “Eastern Conference All Stars” that ring truest: Sampled piano hooks and languid ‘boom-bap’ beats swirl round Sky’s effortless delivery, all the while concealing the dark laments of police brutality and racial profiling – something that is as relevant today as it was back when the albums that inspired Retropolitan were released. Think Nas’ 1994 classic Illmatic or Pete Rock’s own Mecca & The Soul Brother and you’ll get the picture. Old school hip-hop heads will lap this up, hopefully so will newbies looking for an alternative to the current wave of bling rap out there. Dan Ashcroft
