Bali, and all of Indonesia for that matter, is a special place. There is hardly anywhere on the planet where people say to themselves simple things like, “I just love this place” or “I wouldn’t know where I’d go if I had to leave here.” I’ve found myself saying such things in the weirdest moments over the years; stuck in traffic with cars and motorcycles whizzing past me at break neck speed almost smashing into each other but not, or in the back room of some place that you could never imagine existing let alone in the world’s most populous Muslim country, or discovering some unknown weird truth that gutters you to the soul, but a lesson well served that builds you stronger. Appreciation of where you live is not an abundant resource on this planet and for whatever reason that holds us here, we, the people living on this island or country, should always be thankful for the opportunity we have been given. I remember a very short story in the beat magazine many years ago about what we then called ‘the never knowing what is going to happen next phenomenon and the highs and lows associated’, or maybe it was a more concise title. This phenomenon is everywhere and should be held close to our hearts. It’s not for everyone of course, but for those who are up for it; bring it on, let it rock and there’s a lot for us to learn along the way. Just be thankful for that. So Bali never ceases to amaze and this year’s high season never seems to come to an end. I was just looking at the events coming our way in the next two weeks and you would have to say thank you very much to those responsible and also the ones responsible for the last couple of months of entertainment on this island. We love you all for making this island a better place. Check the What’s On and the HereNow sections inside for more information.

Head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office, Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu said that it was the beach attractions that are luring Chinese tourists to Bali. Today Chinese tourists ranked second largest after Australians. Since most Chinese tourists came from the mountains they are very happy to experience the beaches of Bali. Year on year, the trend in tourists visiting China is increasing about 15-24%. In the near future, he added, there will be 39 Heads of Tourism from several provinces of China visiting Bali. Subhiksu denied that the flood of Chinese tourists to Bali was because China is synonymous with poor travellers and Bali being sold too cheap.

Alan Bates THE CANGGU CLUB | WEDs 19 & THURS 20 sept Roots

Alan Bates has had a very colorfully checkered past. He originally was a DJ/producer in Britain before living a life at sea aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean as a casino manager. It was their where he found his true calling in the world of stage shows. Onboard a cruise ship, he made friends with an illusionist who used hypnotism in his acts. From that point on, entertaining had entered Bates’ life and there was no looking back. Upon returning to England, he took upon himself to learn the dark arts of psychology and created his own unique act.

Sound

Hypnotic comedy.

Where you might have heard of him

Bates is a master comedian and has performed in Cyprus, Malta, Switzerland, East Africa, Europe, Egypt, Singapore, the Middle East, and the United States. He has even performed for the royal family of Brunei and if there’s one thing those guys know how to do, it’s partying and being entertained. He has toured with Derek Acorah, a psychic medium in their TV show, The Paranormal Experience.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

This is just about as novel as it gets and sounds like it might be a uniquely fun night that you may be talking about for weeks. He actually hypnotizes people on stage and makes them believe they are getting chased by ghosts or have won the lottery. We’ve been told that he doesn’t force people out of the crowd to do it so don’t panic. From our research, the laughs seem endless and hypnotizing people in order to prank them on stage is just about the most genius thing we’ve heard of in a long time.

TOMOKI TAMURA WOO BAR | SATURDAY 22 & SUNDAY 23 sept

Roots:

Tomoki Tamura started his DJ career in his hometown of Osaka, Japan. With his signature blend of deep, tech, electro, minimal with rich soulful tinge it didn’t take too long for Tamura to claim top spot in the Japanese underground dance scene. In 2004, after conquering his native country, Tomoki Tamura moved to London to spread his music at famous clubs like Ministry of Sound and Fabric.

Sounds:

House, techno, electronic

Where you might have heard him

Tomoki Tamura held a residency at the much revered club The End in London in 2007. Around the same time he started his own party, Holic which provided him with wider popularity and since then has been featured regularly at clubs in London and Japan. His first EP under the Tomoki & Nono moniker, Voices 3 Years which came out in 2008 and succeeded to reach number one in the Beatport charts. Tamura became the first Japanese DJ to appear on House of Ministry radio and House FM.

www.beatmag.com

Why see him

Tomoki Tamura is one of the elite few Japanese DJs who made it in the global dance scene. After breaking out of the Japanese underground dance circuit years ago as the most promising young act, Tamura has been setting parties alight in Berlin, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Belarus, Greece and Turkey.

Danny Howells Mint | thursday 27 sept Roots:

The beginning of what is described by many as deepsexyfuturistictechfunkouse, the Danny Howells trademark sound, began early in Howells childhood in Hastings, England. Howells grew up absorbing classical to pop and funk music blaring from different rooms in the Howells household. The experience led him to become an ardent records collector before eventually finding his calling behind the turntables. His first gig then took place in the late 80s at a party to celebrate Prince’s birthday. He spent the next couple of years at local clubs until being introduced to his mentor, John Digweed.

Sounds:

Progressive electronica

Where you might have heard him

www.beatmag.com

Howells is as good a producer as he is a DJ. In fact his early productions with another British lad, Tim Cross, under the moniker Squelch were what landed him his first recording contract from Jackpot, which subsequently elevated him to the international stage. He quickly amassed a loyal fan base worldwide and with more original tracks, mix and remix projects for artists like Robbie Williams, Slide, and Astrax coming his way Howells eventually gained his much deserved global superstar status. Going into the new millennium, Howells was a worldwide household name. His DJing artistry provided him with a top ten spot in the DJ Mag’s 2000 reader’s poll. A seminal release followed in 2005 for the Global Underground series which showcased day and night sets from Howells performance in Club Space, Miami. You may have even caught his show at 66 Club back in 2000.

Why see him

The high flyin, globe trottin’ Howell is one of the gifted few, both in producing and DJing. Howells is widely applauded for his ability to control the pace of his show and weave his tunes seamlessly, a skill and musical sense that he developed over a long period of playing gigs and producing in studio. In other words, after doing what he’s doing for so long, Danny Howells knows all the bits and pieces there is to know to move people on the dance floor.

AKASAKA | fRIDAY 28 sept Roots:

Kevin Aprilio (piano/keyboard, Raka Cyril Damar (guitar), and Satryanda Wijanarko (drums) were sophomore students who met through the social network site Friendster before adding Widy Soediro Nichlany, a senior high school student as their vocalist. They describe their music as Disney-inspired that caters to teenagers and young adults alike. They got further support from, Noey and Capung, a couple of veteran producers who have worked with top Indonesian acts, which resulted in the band’s two highly acclaimed pop albums.

Sound:

Pop rock

Where you might have heard them:

2009 proved to be a good year for Vierra. The band immediately gained recognition with their first single, “Dengarkan Curhatku” from the first album, claimed a respectable top five position in the nation’s prominent music charts like Dahsyat, Inbox and MTV Ampuh. Vierra were also nominated for the best new comer in the 2009 SCTV award. Their first outing continued to do well by raking up 9 million Ring Back Tones and being certified multi-platinum. Their second attempt in the following year saw the youngsters embrace a more mature approach to their music which cemented their status as the frontrunner of the new generation of Indonesian pop stars.

Why see them:

Before the local music scene was bombarded with teeny bopper pop acts in the last couple of years, there was Vierra who are musically superior to the later batch of performers. The members of Vierra have become pop icons, thanks to a myriad of TV shows and an army of pubescent teenage fans.

delizious devina boshe | SATURDAY 29 sept Roots

Devina used to be one part of a successful DJ duo called Electric Barbarellas, along with Milinka. After the group’s break up, Delizious Devina pursued her solo career and has been getting famous in Indonesia’s dance scene.

Sound

www.beatmag.com

Where you might have heard of her

She has received awards like REDMA, Paranoia and The Beat Magazine Awards. Devina, who has joined 1945MF, is also producing tracks for the album The State Of Spiritual and Hearts Of Gold and Higher To See From Above EP. She has played her tunes in many clubs in Indonesia and abroad and also made a breakthrough by collaborating with local musicians such as Duo DJ, Erwin Gutawa, Armada, Slank, Kikan Cokelat, Rebecca, Acha Septriasa, Rahma Azhari, Leeya and Mala & The Bandit as vocalist, John Paul Ivan, VJ Daniel, Maharasyi, Bondan & Fade 2 Black, Sashi Drew as guitarist, Andra & The Backbone, Iwa K, Melly Goeslaw as remixer, and DD.

Why see her

Devina just received an award as a DJ of the Year in the Paranoia Awards 2011. Catch her set at Boshe where she’ll probably rock the house.

junior sanchez hu’u bar | saturDAY 29 sept

Roots:

Originally from suburban Belleville, New Jersey, Junior Sanchez had his DJ beginnings with a jerry rigged DJ set made up of his parent’s two stereo systems when he was 11. Fortunes took a turn for the better when he was 15 and was spinning music heavily influenced by the early local house in some of the more popular subterranean clubs around NYC. His passion combined with work ethic soon saw him elevated to a position of an in-demand remixer, producer and DJ.

Sounds:

Not a pop punk or electro DJ. Generally house.

Where you might have heard him

www.beatmag.com

Along with Armand Van Helden, Sanchez formed a house music supergroup called the Mongoloids which featured a bunch of talentless no names such as Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Stuart Price, DJ Sneak, Roger Sanchez, and Ian Pooley. He is a proficient remixer with artists like Madonna, Shakira, Katy Perry, Good Charlotte, Placebo, The Bravery, Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Blaqk Audio, Hot Hot Heat, Roisin Murphy, Felix Da Housecat, The Faint, New Order, Emiliana Torrini, Jamiroquai, Giorgio Moroder, Moving Units, Les Rhythmes Digitales all under his belt. Two of his tracks, “Where You Are” and “I Believe In.” made it to the number one spot on Beatport and like any other huge DJ, he’s played at pretty much every club that matters in every country with enough dough to pay him.

Why see him

Sanchez is currently working on a full length album and punters at Hu’u will most likely get a sample of some future hit way before everyone else in the world does. His dynamic sound and flair for evolving will make for a great night at Hu’u.

Foster

the People POTATO HEAD BEACH CLUB | saturDAY 29 sept Roots

The story of Foster the People starts with one man on a journey through the wilderness of Hollywood. It is a tale of one’s adventures and the quest to make it in the entertainment industry where many are destined to fail and only a fraction succeeds. Our story begins with a boy, Mark Foster, who had moved to LA to become rich and famous after high school. He described his early experiences to be akin to a young Hunter S. Thompson, not because he wrote, but because of the other endeavors Mr Thompson is notoriously known for. Foster unsuccessfully tried to form a band, but those early attempts just refused to bear fruit. He landed a job producing jingles and discovered his inner eclectic style. After teaming up with drummer Mark Pontius and eventually Cubbie Fink, Foster & the People was born but people kept on calling the band Foster the People and that name soon stuck.

Sound

Indie pop

Where you might have heard of them

www.beatmag.com

Everyone should know their breakout hit “Pumped Up Kicks” by now. The song was originally available in 2010 for free download on Mark Foster’s website and was used by Nylon magazine for its online advertising. From there it went viral and everyone wanted a piece of Foster the People and they went on to signed a multi-record contract with Columbia. They had made it. They became superstars. After generating huge buzz at South by Southwest and Coachella, they released an eponymous EP followed by their full length album, Torches. The album immediately was a giant success with half of the ever accessible and catchy tracks being licensed off to a number of TV shows including Gossip Girl, Entourage, and The Vampire Diaries as well as video games and commercials. Together with the massive success of “Pumped Up Kicks” on the airwaves and appearances on late night talk shows, the band was now a crossover success and made it on the top 40 charts. They followed this success with a tour that managed to sell out on many of their stops. They were nominated for two Grammy nominations and closed 2011 with the sixth-best-selling digital song of the year with 3.84 million copies paid for and downloaded.

Why see them

Foster the People are one of those Cinderella success stories that just about everyone loves to hear. Their sudden rise to fame can be attributed to one thing, the sheer likability to just about every single one of Torches’ tracks. Seriously, it’s one of those albums where every song is immaculately crafted. Their live shows reportedly live up to their buzz and it seems like Potato Head just might have done the impossible by actually outdoing themselves and their already stellar record.

he Elements party in Boshe was built around a collaborative performance from two of the hottest local DJs from Jakarta, Anza March and Dizzi. The night was opened around 10pm by DJ Dee who performed his set in front of an already excited crowd. The top billings then came on right after that to supply the beats for the famous Boshe sexy models show. Anza March and Dizzi kept the tempo high with their back to back performances that only got the party crazier through the night. People started to climb on to the stage to dance until closing time in the early morning hours.

otato Head has done it again. They’ve staged another epic Summer Syndrome party that was pretty much the talk of the island. Pretty much everyone showed up in costume and some of the outfits were absolutely fabulous. Kid Cudi had a great show and the amount of dancing in the crowd proved to be a good indicator of how his music resonated. We salute Potato Head in bringing diverse acts into town and having some quality hip hop from one of the hottest alternative rappers today was an awesome treat indeed.

The Never So Humble Pig

Nyoman’s superb pork features on the Seasonal Tasting Menu and as a part of several culinary journeys organized by Chef Eelke. Creating artisan products and every day menu items from local ingredients is at the heart of the slow food movement. Slow Food is an international movement that eschews the lack of values in the modern food industry. It is the antidote to fast food, the antithesis of processed, one-size-fits-all convenience food. Slow Food doesn’t have to take a long time, it simply has to be local, fresh, organic and cooked with care. For the twenty or so enthusiasts who took part in a culinary exhibit of great note at Alila Ubud recently, a true feast was prepared in front of our eyes, the results of which were enjoyed in quite a spectacular fashion. Alila’s Executive chef Eelke, his assistant Ray and the team of cooks at Alila showed what can be done with one of Nyoman’s pigs with a little skill and imagination. The day began with butchering the pig that had been killed with kindness. From there a little magic was employed as the animal was transformed into sausages, salamis, salted to produce prosciutto, minced into pates, seasoned and marinated and prepared for roasts and succulent hams. A multi-course lunch was then served which featured the locally raised pork in all its guises. The point of all this is to prove that great produce and skillful cooking starts locally.

For more on Slow Food movement in Bali: www.slowfoodubud.com/About_Slow_Food.html

The slow food movement started in Italy but Bali has embraced it and the work of the local chapter is to bring together farmers, chefs, producers and individuals who love food at its most natural. Among those who attended the event were Ben and Blair Ripple, whose company Big Tree has been working with local farmers to promote local, organic products. Their latest venture is a chocolate factory that uses raw, organic cacao beans to produce world-class chocolate products. Marjan van Ravenzwaaj who owns the Organic Farm and Stay also attended with a group of local farmers and chefs who shared the experience. Cat Wheeler and Mary Jane Edleston of Slow Food were there to applaud the efforts of one of the island’s best chefs. “Slow Food is all about keeping it good, clean and fair,” said Mary in her thank you speech. The diners were grateful enough, having enjoyed a lunch that began simply enough with fresh bread served with pork fat and crispy lardons, followed by trays of cold cuts made in-house, pate and head cheese, fried pigs ears and brains followed with the home-made sausages, roast pork belly and pork loin with incredible crackling and finally a slow-cooked ham that had been brined and marinated. Slow food is not only about eating but sharing skills and inspiring local producers to do it better and more naturally. A number of chefs attend each other’s events and even share the secrets and recipes they have developed in search of local alternatives to imported ingredients. None of it would be worthwhile unless the results were good enough to convince us that local can be every bit as good as the imported versions, more economical and inspiring on a creative level. In the hands of one of Bali’s most talented chefs, it was at the end, a totally brilliant lunch.

When a stranger “needs a local guy who understands about international-standard sound recording and is also able to organize sophisticated music concerts,” there’s no need to panic, just say this name: Anom Darsana.

Homegrown & Well Known:

ANOM DARSANA Interview by Rudolf Dethu

www.beatmag.com

guess it's the result of your never-saydie consistency in the local art and music scene that has made you a household name in the industry. Kudos for that. Have you always been into sound engineering? Music is my life. Since I was a kid I've always been surrounded by family who love music. I was introduced to Pink Floyd, ELP, Supertramp, Bob Dylan, Queen, and lots of other brilliant musicians, when I was still in elementary school. My best friend in high school, Marlowe Bandem, influenced me a lot in shaping my musical tastes as well. Right after I finished high school I went to Lausanne, Switzerland, to study French. My taste in music became even broader. I started listening to more European-oriented groove

and experiencing "real" and "serious" music concerts. After I fiished studying French, it turned out it was difficult to apply my knowledge in Switzerland. I should've thought about it before hehe… Why would they need a foreigner to teach them French, anyway? At the time, I wasn't really interested in going back to Bali. I was in a rock band with friends in Lausanne. I'd built my connections there. So then I studied sound engineering while also working casually in a rental sound system company, in television production, and a recording studio, getting involved with bands who were doing tours, etc. I finally realized that music, especially sound engineering, was my destiny rather than teaching French.

Why did you decide to move back to Bali? Isn't living in a first world country easier?

f e a t u r e

096

During my 13 years living in Switzerland I regularly came to Bali for holidays. Even though I had already built a certain reputation in music recording and live concerts in Switzerland, but the more I visited Bali, the more I wanted to go back home. I felt an urge to contribute something to my own island with the knowledge I had. To build a proper recording studio, to initiate a kind of music centre, to share, and eventually I moved back to Bali. My wife came with me, too.

www.beatmag.com

It seems like moving back to Bali was the right decision. Antida recording studio did well— considered one of the best on the island, while Serambi Arts Antida became Denpasar's music mecca, a local artists hangout place. Too bad that Serambi Arts Antida had to close down. Too young to die. Back when I was still in Switzerland I already had my own recording studio with the same name: Antida. I mostly worked with hip hop artists, including my own compilation project, Tout un Monde (a collaboration with a wellknown Geneve-based rapper, Pouney). So when I opened my first little studio in the front of my house in Kesiman, it didn't take me long to expand. People showed great appreciation. I kind of already expected this to happen. You can say that I know what I'm doing. I then built a much bigger studio with international-standard equipment. Other than making me almost broke, it took me eight exhausting months to create a room with excellent acoustic quality. But it was worth it. Antida was famous only a few months after opening the door. Local and international musicians started coming to record their material. As time went by, I started producing talented local artists like Dialog Dini Hari and Nosstress. Serambi Arts Antida, the live concert venue and cafe, followed a bit later after one of my clients invited me to join him building a public music centre. One year on, Serambi Arts Antida had become the centre of (mostly) Denpasar's artistic scene, as a hangout spot. At least once a month we organized a show which attracted art enthusiasts from all over the place: Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud, and especially Denpasar. We also had an advantage that in Denpasar there was no other proper small-to-medium sized concert venue. Serambi Arts Antida was the only place to go. But all those beautiful stories had to end right when Serambi Arts Antida reach its peak. My partner and I, we could not work together any longer. Our vision regarding what to do with the venue went completely different

ways. We both tried our best to keep the joint venture running but were unsuccessful. Serambi Arts Antida had to be closed. I was, and am, totally broken hearted. But separation was the only option left. So there you go. Whew, R.I.P. Serambi Arts Antida. Will there be a new Serambi Arts Antida? There will be, oh yes. But not too sure when it can be realized. I'm still working on finding partners or sponsors. But in spirit, Serambi Arts Antida never dies. I still organize shows. Rock oriented, jazz oriented, folk oriented gigs. Everything represents talent and quality. The most recent one was Ubud Jazz Village Festival. The concept, the vision and mission for new Serambi Arts Antida is already very clear in my mind. Just need to find partners with mutual understanding. So it's just a matter of time. Stick around, people! Denpasar does not really have a proper youth and/or community centre. Serambi Arts Antida could have been the perfect alternative. Did the government ever show support, or did you ever contact them at all? Well, we did try once to get in touch with them when we did an Earth Day concert back then but there was zero response from them. I guess they have too many enquiries to accommodate. No problem. You know, I am more interested in working together with people who are enthusiastic about our programs. Our supporters have always been our good friends, young entrepreneurs, small enterprises with the same or similar visions. Let's get personal, name three of your all-time favourite albums and why.

The Wall by Pink Floyd. Interesting, imaginative, theatrical, and historical. MOFFOU by Salif Keita. Founder of Afro-pop genre. 2001 by Dr. Dre. I'm very inspired by this album. The album that I released in Switzerland was pretty much interpreting Dre's signature dancey beats in 2001. Any last nagging words? Widen your horizon, dig deeper into music, any kind of music. And then create your own music. No need to be proud performing other people's creations, does not matter how perfect or how precise it is. You, your own music, your own identity, that's what it's all about.

Pumping

Plastic

www.beatmag.com

Komang Arnawa is a two-time world champion body builder and is fighting an enormous problem on this island and it’s not just garbage. It’s something you can’t really see, it’s insidious and it’s underground. I’m not even sure it has a name but I imagine apathy comes pretty close. Or maybe it’s a lack of education. Most people on this island appear to have the attitude that rubbish is something that disappears by its own means. Just floats off down the nearest river or gully to be cleansed by an unknown force of nature. That may have been the case when garbage was biodegradable, but as we all should know, that’s not the case anymore. Typically, plastic bags are burned polluting the atmosphere and land with toxicity. This attitude has to change before we are all engulfed in our own mess. So what’s Komang doing about it? For one thing, he is promoting the use of reusable shopping bags. Let’s find out more. What’s the story behind the bags? For many years now, I have tried to focus my lifestyle around health and education. It is something that definitely takes practice but with a certain amount of self discipline, it is achievable, even becoming a habit.

In my village, the majority of plastic is either burned or thrown into the river. Burning plastic is highly toxic and can cause cancer. Unfortunately, most Balinese are not aware of this, so we need to provide information about this to create awareness.

Every day I watch the young children of Bali buy one small item, receive a plastic bag and throw the bag onto the street, eventually into the gutter, the river and finally the sea. Every time I purchase one item, the warung automatically puts it into a bag before first considering whether this is really necessary. The problem of excess use of plastic is not going away, it’s getting worse and unless we act now, it’s going to get out of control.

What makes this campaign any different to other re-useable shopping bags that have come before? All campaigns for the environment are great and for a good cause, however people in my village were not getting informed about the problems associated with plastic. Our poster is not flowery, it’s a strong almost gloomy image that catches the eye. Our Campaign is aimed at the ground

level warungs and markets. The average Balinese family consumes 5-10 (kresek) plastic bags per day, approximately 3,500 bags per year. By simply putting 10 reusable bags under your bike seat, you can effectively kill 3500 plastic bags. I noticed the facebook campaign you’ve been promoting recently is written in Indonesian and English. Who’s your target audience here? Our target audience is everyone in Bali, but in particular the traditional Balinese families. Nowadays, even offerings are sold in plastic bags. Why don’t we bring our own re-usable bag to put the offerings in? As I mentioned, anything that is practiced again and again will eventually become habit... we just need to display a little self discipline. We are promoting the campaign in the small family run warungs. Typically, even the smallest warung will give out a hundred plus plastic bags per day. This costs the warung owner Rp 300,000 per month. We will distribute posters to the warungs with information about the environmental and health problems associated with the use of plastic bags. Most village warungs personally know their customers, so it’s not difficult to give a friendly reminder to bring a re-usable bag. And saving Rp 300,000 per month is also great for the warung owners.

www.beatmag.com

How do people get their hands on one of your shopping bags? A need to dip into limited personal finances is usually the reason why people are hesitant to react to this type of thing. We are making nonwoven bags and distributing them at factory prices. The bags are affordable but not cheap enough to end up in the river. Our campaign is not about selling bags but educating people to bring a re-usable bag. We have printed TAS PASAR on our bags to encourage and remind the local community to bring their bag to the market. We will be meeting with local market owners to introduce the TAS PASAR idea. Our plan is to provide them and individual warung owners with TAS PASAR bags directly from the factory. The cost price will be printed clearly on each bag in order to encourage an equal selling price and

maximize a willingness of community members to integrate this new habit into their lifestyle. We estimate that each re-usable bag will cost no more than Rp 3000 to the buyer. Why exactly are you doing this? It’s very easy to sit back and say that the government should be responsible for this and expect them to do something. By initiating the TAS PASAR program perhaps we, as a community, can make the job a lot easier for the government to manage. I highly recommend everyone to watch this u-tube video about plastic trash. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td8RkPDOPuc I guarantee it will encourage you to reach for a re-usable TAS PASAR and use it diligently. If you wish to help spread the word, would like some TAS PASAR posters, or can help to really make a positive impact by sponsoring the cost of TAS PASAR bags for a warung, business or family, please contact me at: taspasar@komangarnawa.com Together as an international community, with a little self-discipline, we can make a big difference to the future of Bali.

Cat Power Sun

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

I

think I might actually be in love with Chan Marshall. She followed me back on Twitter the other day and my head almost exploded. But I digress, more importantly Miss Marshall, AKA Cat Power has a new album out and it’s really rather splendid.

Musically, Sun sounds so much more accomplished and complete than previous works, with a wealth of different instruments thrown into the mix instead of the usual sparse guitar and voice combo or covers record. Rich synths and booming drums propel the songs forward, adding extra layers of intrigue and consistency that beautifully compliment Marshall’s husky voice that could probably sing the phone book and make it sound enthralling. Take “Manhattan” for instance. It sounds like Marshall has simply hit the demo mode button on her Casio at first, but with a few subtle touches and her soulful, smoky vocals it becomes so much more. “Cherokee” is a great opener that sucks the listener straight in, before the title track kicks off with a groovy bass line that is sure to get heads a-nodding. Fellow oddball Iggy Pop backs her up with his best Johnny Cash impression on “Nothin But Time” (which admittedly goes on for far too long), and the singalong “3, 6, 9” highlights the perils of guzzling another bottle of wine to make last night’s hangover go away. The best thing about the Atlanta, Georgia native and erstwhile face of Chanel is the way she refuses to tread the easy path. She could so comfortably have been sucked in and absorbed by the commercial radio-friendly pop brigade, but instead she displays an endearing modesty manifested in apparently crippling stage fright, dabbles with alcoholism and just generally doing weird stuff like locking herself in an abandoned cabin in the woods to write the spooky Moon Pix back in ’98 and drawing up a contract with her record company on a Post It note. An adventurous and brave effort, Sun heralds a rebirth of confidence for Cat Power and a welcome return to her accomplished best. Dan Ashcroft

rajagan-East Java: At the 2nd annual Put Up or Shut Up/Source to the Sea One-Day Surf Tournament presented by Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships and SurfTime magazine last week, in massive 8-12 foot waves, Australia’s Tai Graham put on a committed and exemplary performance to receive the honor of being declared the best surfer of the day. In a unique four-hour free surfing tournament, the only one of its kind in the world, Graham was truly the personification of a great free surfer, embracing the tournaments format of showing utter commitment to finding the best waves, riding each wave with utter commitment until the very end, and always taking his turn in the lineup. He was also the very last surfer to exit the water, leading to the end of the tournament. Graham hails from the Gold Coast of Australia but resides in Bali, and is well known in the surfing world for his stylish and solid surfing ability in both large and small waves.

www.beatmag.com

At the awards ceremony in Bobby’s Surf Camp that evening, Graham was both surprised and elated at being named the best surfer of the day. In addition to the receiving the honor of being named the best surfer of the day, Graham was presented with an authentic Balinese wayang puppet trophy, 10 million Rupiah, and a commemorative surfboard from Bobby’s Surf Camp. Narrowly edged out was Chris Ward from America, who recently won the Rip Curl Cup at PadangPadang in Bali, and is known as one of the best backside barrel riders in the world. Ward was fresh

off a multi-island surfing marathon, where lack of sleep and an infected tooth might have slowed him down a fraction, but regardless he was the second to the last surfer to exit the water today behind Graham. He was given the Iron Man Award for his dedication and commitment to both his craft and to this tournament. Also receiving awards were Dave Thomas from Hawaii for the best barrel ride, which is considered the ultimate prize in surfing, and Mustofa Jeksen for having the best wipeout, the result of his constant compulsion to take off on the biggest waves and pull into the biggest and deepest barrels regardless of the consequence. The 2nd annual Put Up or Shut Up/Source to the Sea One-Day Surf Tournament presented by CocaCola Indonesian Surfing Championship and SurfTime magazine took place in East Java at Grajagan Bay at a surf break known as G-Land, miles away from any form of civilization, which has a coral reef headland that gives birth to one of the very best and most consistent left hand waves in the world. It is a two plus hour boat ride from Bali or an 8-hour drive that includes a ferry crossing over the Java Strait to the island of Java. In this unique surfing tournament there was only one rule: Surfers must perform at their absolute. It is a winner-take-all event tournament format where the surfers put their own money up and bet on themselves to be the best surfer on the day…that’s it…no points, no wave limits, no time limits and no structure. They just go out and surf to see how well they can perform in the conditions at hand…and the conditions today were in a word, epic!

Born in Bandjar Dlodtangkluk, Sukawati, Gianyar in 1958, Nyoman Erawan was absorbed into art since he was young lad and made it part of his daily life. After finishing his education at the School of Fine Arts in Denpasar, he then decided to continue his art studies at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy in Yogyakarta, where he was also active in performing theatre and joined with Sanggar Dewata Indonesia artists group. Since 2009 and up until now, Nyoman Erawan made a surprising decision by featuring facial and body images of his own in abstract works. Probably this is his way of exploring his artistic

a r t development and to express the attitudes, judgments, and his personal muses on many events occurring in his world. He also represents the meaning of the human body in unusual behavior to the great universe. All those perspectives are embodied in his latest exhibition called “Salvation of the Soul where he also launches a book of the same title.

Located on Sunset Road, Reborn seems a little off the beaten track, however the experience on offer here is quite unique. Very reasonably priced, Reborn is quintessentially Asian and offers a range of therapies that focus on health and wellbeing. An Asian Destination

A range of treatments is on offer at Reborn and reflexology is a popular choice. Choose from an hour to two hours, the reflexology treatments are often combined with a soothing neck and shoulder massage. The therapists here have a good understanding of anatomy and healing and the signature massage is called Tui Na, a massage that combines Balinese massage techniques with acupressure and the traditions of Chinese massage. Scraping, cupping, ear candling and other traditional Asian treatments are on the menu, all at great prices.

www.beatmag.com

Allergy-free, natural and organic, the ingredients employed in these health treatments are steeped in tradition. As part of a network of over 20 centres throughout Malaysia, Reborn is a franchise that offers something truly Asian and quite unique. Combining a Balinese sense with traditional healing techniques.

This is a spa that really reflects the Asian touch. Reborn is busy, professionally run. Pan Pacific

Nirwana Bali Resort There are beautiful luxurious 5-star leisure escapes on every corner of Bali, yet none brings the concept of heaven on earth to life like this gem of a resort. Location

Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort sits atop a luscious green slope overlooking Beraban beach in Tanah Lot, Tabanan regency. It’s higher up to the north of the increasingly dense South Bali region and takes about an hour to reach the premises from the airport, but the trip is worth every minute of it. Being in such remote area the resort may be short on worldly entertainment but it more than makes it up with stunning natural beauty, peaceful surroundings, and the rich cultural heritage of the local community.

Look

www.beatmag.com

The high end resort combines the best of modern comforts and exotic cultural idioms in its design. But the charming structures aren’t the most important feature as the buildings occupy a mere 20% of the 103-hectare plot of land. The rest of it is a wide-open breathtaking landscape that houses an 18-hole golf course, acres of rice fields, well-manicured gardens and nine fully functioning community temples on one side, and a long stretch of Beraban Tanah Lot beach on the other.

Atmosphere

Time turns at a much slower pace in the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort. With one of the three most sacred temples in Bali, the Tanah Lot temple stands next door. Even guests who come for a peaceful retreat in paradise will find Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali exceeds their expectation.

Features

Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort offers 278 guest rooms and villas, the ocean-view TLC bar, Merica restaurant, and The Nirwana Spa. The resort’s award-winning golf course, the best in Indonesia, has been the main draw for years since its opening. However, there are scores of other attractions for Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort guests like the eco-tourism programs where participants can experience hands-on agricultural cultivation activities at the resort’s own rice fields. Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort is also popular for its MICE facilities that boast a 240 banquet-style seat Grand Ballroom and 4 smaller meeting rooms with high tech AV and IT system. Families with young children can take advantage of the Kokokan Kids Club that provides outdoor playground and a children’s pool among others.

Prices

The price ranges from US$ 240++ for Golf View Room to US$ 800++ for Presidential Suite.

beat down

T

www.beatmag.com

he focus of the Beat Down party presented by The Beat Jakarta at Otel Lobby last weekend was on the fashion show presented by the birthday girl, Tutus Kurniati and her celebrity Jakarta friends sashaying elegantly down the red catwalk in a collection of Italian summer inspired kebayas. With drinks from the sponsors Ciroc Vodka (somewhere), a few snacks and tunes from Mikey Moran and later Jeremy Jay, Otel Lobby proved to be quite the spot for fun, games and pre-clubbing drinks. And where’s the next Beat Down or Beat Up Party you may ask? Good question, we’ll let you know soon.

The Beat Lex BBQ Groove out

T

www.beatmag.com

he Beat was back at Liquid Exchange last Sunday afternoon with The 8th edition of The Sunset BBQ Party at Lex in Epicentrum Walk, Kuningan. Beats were supplied by Venus in Transit guest DJ, Lee Getts with an eclectic mix of deep dance goodies which had the mutli-aged and faceted participants grooving in the aisles with their dishes of BBQ goodness. The New Year energy is looking good.
