Well, February is upon us and for anybody with a slight crush, blissful soul mate, unhappy significant other, or a somewhat casual relationship that might become something more, it’s time to start thinking about doing something that ultimately shows that you care. For you men out there, this is usually a time of great stress followed by even more stress as time waits for no man and February 14 fast approaches. For women, well, there’s not much for you do but wait and judge. I wish everyone the best of luck and continued happiness throughout this obligatory show of affection. It seems like the only silver lining to this whole month of love thing is for you single folks out there. Bali is probably the best place in the world to be single and that is more than backed up by the evidence presented in this fine publication. It’s time to get out there and have some fun, let loose, and maybe you will just find someone to have a good laugh about the whole nonsense of it all. February also signals the gradual passing of the rainy season. It’s a time when we can look back and say the worst of all this miserable weather is over… right before another downpour hits us without warning. So keep those umbrellas in the car and make sure that raincoat is in your bike. But the biggest thing to happen to Bali this Feb is inarguably our very own Deep Beat Party happening on Saturday, February 16 at Pyramid. We don’t like to toot our own horn too much, but they’ll be all sorts of fun and games, surprise live, dance and DJ performances and drinks going down like crazy from our sponsors (Bintang, Undurraga, Jack Daniels, Finlandia Vodka, Pepe Lopez Tequila) – just the way we like it! – if are lucky enough to be given an invitation. The action starts at 10pm, goes way late, and the later it gets the deeper it goes. So come join us for some of the best entertainment in one of the biggest, and fast becoming a member of the select group of premier venues in town, Pyramid. Send an email to party@beatmag.com to find out how you can get an invitation.

koko harsoe jazz cafe | saturday feb 2
Roots
Koko first got acquainted with jazz music when he was 13 years old, through his brother’s jazz cassettes which he later played on his classic guitar. Having felt that playing through cassettes was not quite enough, Koko found a better by way of one of his schoolmates who was the daughter of a bebop guitarist, Edy Karamoy. Karamoy didn’t want anything to do with this child, so Koko had to convince his daughter to steal and copy his jazz chord syllabus and book. This gave him the musical edge he needed and went a long way towards his career as a musician.
Sounds Jazz
Where you might have heard them
As a guitarist, Koko was once honored to be able to share the stage with some international musicians, notably the maestro Herbie Hancock in 1997 at Intercontinental Bali playing some of Hancock’s best-known solo works such as “Maiden Voyage” and “Cantaloupe Island” amongst others. In 2002, Koko played at Jazz Café Ubud with yet another big name (having clinched 18 Grammy Awards so far) from the world of jazz, Armando Anthony “Chick” Corea.
www.beatmag.com
Why see them
His love for jazz is like a painter’s love for canvas. Koko’s jazz is heavily influenced by international jazz performers such as Edy Karamoy, Yose Haryo Soeyoto (modern composer), Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Joe Lovano, Bill Evans, John Mc Laughlin, Pat Martino etc. So be sure to catch his sure to be sweet performance at Jazz Café Ubud on February 2.

Dennis Ferrer & Andre Hommen woo bar | Thursday 07 feb Roots
Dennis Ferrer’s passion for music began during childhood. He played a toy piano at the age of four, then as an eight-year-old he bought rap records while hip hop was just beginning to rock his New York neighborhood. Ferrer was schooled by house and electronic music’s leading acid techno pioneer Damon Wild (behind Synewave Records) and Kerri Chandler who set up a studio for Ferrer in his front room. Teaming up with Ferrer is André Hommen who was introduced to the music he loves through seminal radio shows such as “1Live Partyservice” and “1LiveTribehouse”, which was way more thrilling and intriguing to him than the music scene that his hometown Nettetal in West Germany. His decision was to have warm groovy house music as his musical hallmark and was soon mixing; at first in his bedroom but soon at underground parties such as Radio DJ Mike Litt’s “Sonntagserlebniss” events.
Sounds
Ferrer: Afro-centric house, techno and soul, dance music, deep house. Hommen: house music.
Where you might have heard them
www.beatmag.com
Dennis Ferrer’s New York City based Objektivity imprint and has had the opportunity to develop projects by artists including Ferrer, Argy and The Martinez Brothers. Ferrer bursted back into dance music consciousness with the release of “Sandcastles,” (Ibadan) his collaboration with Jerome Sydenham in 2003. He started out 2009 with quick acclaim from the top music site Beatport which awarded him Best Deep House Artist of 2009. His single “Hey, Hey” for Objektivity shot immediately to number one on Beatport where it held for over four weeks. It’s also been number one at Juno and number one at Black Market in Soho, London. André has played at clubs throughout Europe including Ibiza and Berlin’s premier club, Watergate and his tour schedule has brought him to London, Vienna, Amsterdam, Zurich and all over Germany. He is part of the administrative and creative team behind
Why see them
Both Hommen and Ferrer have a penchant for a wide range of musical influences and genres and incorporate them into their music. Their brand, Objektivity, is a cutting-edge label in touch with its time, putting a uniquely American spin on the deep house revival that is currently making waves in Europe. Its bumping tunes will surely engage, even the mainstream audiences. Make sure to catch their live performance at Woo Bar on Feb 7.

Beni spent his most formative years watching his father perform with the trans genre Avalanches which inspired him to pick up the turntables and become a DJ. At first, his curiosity did not help him even a bit, especially when he tried to combine rap, disco and funk without realizing the fundamental problem that a 94 BPM track is not going to blend with a 125 one. The crate digger kept at it, though, tightening his sets until they became fluid blends of his decade-spanning dance music career.
Sounds

Where you might have heard him
His first release was the single “My Love Sees You in 2008 and was featured on the Kitsune Maison Compilation 6 and his other tracks went on two feature in two of the follow up albums. Beni’s notable tracks on his studio album House of Beni are “O.P.U.L.E.N.C.E.”, “Last Night”, and “Yeah” to which he pointed out that “the outro of that song reminds [him] of the Boyz n the Hood soundtrack—the part where Doughboy is pouring his beer on the street.” Truly he is a renaissance man of our times. Like the rest his other records, it’s a perfect example of what happens when music is a genuine meeting of the minds, rather than an excuse to drop names and appeal to as many crossover audiences as possible. You may also know him from his collaboration with Joel Dickson called Riot in Belgium which have had a couple notable remixes, one of which made it on the Need for Speed: ProStreet soundtrack.

Why see him
Beni has been a curious entertainer all his life. His curiosity has matured over the years, and now almost all of his music bounds over different genres. This is what makes him able to appeal to crossover audiences and immerse them in the world of curious Beni. Curious? Head down to Hu’u Bar on February 8 to find out more.

His charisma and musical style is often mentioned as full of charm for the women.

Later on, his first album, GLENN (1998) was received relatively well; selling 50 thousand copies, despite RnB being not so popular in Indonesia at the time. The most notable performances that he might of had were in 2009, Fredly was one of the main performers in a tribute concert to deceased Indonesian singer Chrisye during the Java Jazz Festival. That same year, he performed tribute concerts to Michael Jackson in five cities throughout Indonesia, covering Jackson’s hit songs.

Last Child akasaka music club | Thursday 14 feb
Roots
Formed in 2006 in East Jakarta, Last Child, a pop punk four-piece band and is exploding in the Indonesian music scene. You might be wondering why they’re called Last Child. It is due to the fact that the band members are the last children in their own respective families. Last Child was formed by a trio who were schoolmates; they are Virgoun, Dimas and Ary Ceper (ex-member). The three had their own hardcore bands until they decided to collaborate in order to join an audition for a music festival in another senior high school. Since then, they continued to play music together. Currently, Last Child comprises of Virgoun (vocal, guitar), Dimas (vocal, bass), Rahmat (guitar) and Rizki (drum).
Sounds

Where you might have heard them
In 2009, they made a content label contract with a company when promoting the ring tone of “Diary Depresiku” (My Depression Diary), about a kid with emotional turmoil after parental divorce. The song with its bitter lyrics and slow melody reaped 300,000 downloads, making the ringtone company offer the band a contract for their music. In January last year, they released their second album Our Biggest Thing Ever, with most of the songs in it were written by Virgoun. One of the songs, “Seluruh Nafas Ini” (This Whole Breath) features Giselle, who was a finalist in the 2008 series of Indonesian Idol. In 2012 too, Last Child snatched the Dahsyat Award in the newcomer category, outshining two other strong candidates; male singer Budi Do Re Mi and female singer Citra Skolastika.
www.beatmag.com
Why see them
Influenced by the American pop punk band Blink-182 and local band Sheila on 7, who were huge during the bands school years, listening to Last Child’s music will almost certainly evoke some kind of reminiscence amongst the two bands’ fans. Moreover, Last Child’s power lays in the band’s strong lyrics, which reflect real life, not merely something out of imagination. The band also longs to be the voice of the victims of broken homes and youngsters in the country. Therefore, for Last Friends (affectionate name of Last Child’s fans) out there or pop punk lovers looking for a Valentine’s night out, check out Last Child’s live performance at Akasaka Music Club on February 14.

Hailing from Munich, Jerome Isma-Ae is one of the highest-selling, most successful progressive house DJ/producers of late. He has been a musician since he was in elementary school, after having been taught to play several music instruments. At the age of 12, he played the bass in a metal band, when he turned 15 he started to program his first beats with a drum machine and three years later he released his first record on a German techno label called Delirium Records. Jerome is reinventing and designing the sounds since the early years of electronic dance music. The first few years of Jerome’s career were all about exploring the different sides of music. A year after his first release, he teamed up with Marcel Krieg and gave birth to the Future Funk project, bringing a successful combination of house, disco, soul and funk.

His remix of “Push The Feeling On” made it #1 in the U.S. Billboard Dance Charts in 2002, it was #1 in the German Dance Charts in 2004. Jerome’s dirty, hot remix of ‘Guru Josh Project- Infinity 2008’, one of that year’s biggest Dance anthems, made it #1 in the UK Club Chart. The single achieved gold status in Australia and Germany; it peaked at #1 on the Dutch and French Singles Chart, and #3 on the UK Singles Chart. His inspirational, up front releases such as “Rokit” and “Phantom” have graced the catalogues of every prominent label from Armada Music and Hope Records to Ministry Of Sound. His “Underwater Love” was voted Best Chill Out Track for the Beatport Music Awards 2009. He’s one of the few DJ/producers with true crossover appeal, with his tracks being just as popular with Armin van Buuren and Markus Schulz as they are with Pete Tong and Hernan Cattaneo. Jerome has produced countless remixes for international artists; latest jobs include Paul van Dyk and Way Out West.
Why see him
To Jerome, it’s that well balanced blend of styles that makes the ride worthwhile. Nowadays, though most of his work is labeled “progressive house”, his productions are still influenced by house, disco, soul and funk. Furthermore, his signature remixes also attracted many big names such as Audi and Marlboro, to use Jerome’s service of remix production in their commercials. Cranes, Planes and Automobiles O www.beatmag.com
nce upon a time, the humble bicycle was widely used to transport people, household goods, and even livestock. Overloaded bicycles were a common sight on the streets of Bali, not so often these days. Gone are the brilliantly festooned hawkers of blow-up products, hawking hens in woven baskets tied by the hundreds to the back wheels of two wheelers. Today, SUVs rule, and the streets are busy with bigger and bigger cars and the manual two-wheeler gives way to the motorized version.
f e a t u r e
087
W. O. J. Nieuwenkamp is a Dutch artist who is credited with bringing the first bicycle to Bali and is immortalized in a metre high stone relief of a man riding a bicycle on the wall of Meduwe Karang Temple in North Bali. As one of the first artists to visit Bali, he could be considered partly responsible for mobilizing the population of Bali, and thus, starting it all. Before this, presumably, everyone walked. Along with the increase of motorized transport on the roads, we are also seeing an explosion of cranes on the skyline. It wasn’t long ago that buildings were restricted in their height and this is partly due to the nature of building. Man-made scaffolding was scaled by barefoot workers, nimble and quick, they got the job done equipped with the simplest of tools. Not the kind of stuff to build the vast resorts, hotels and apartment buildings of today. Crowded streets give way to crowded skylines and overhead, more and more planes bring increasing numbers of guests to Bali. Not just jets but propeller planes, private planes and helicopters hover above. What would the early Balinese inhabitants think?
Hopefully this is a period of re-adjustment, as the island copes with the challenges of more arrivals, more traffic and more construction. The end result is anyone’s guess but progress has brought with it new and exciting things as well as the congestion that seems to be the way of the future for Bali. [Sara Dee]
www.beatmag.com
Who knows, perplexed as they would have been, today’s Balinese are probably just as taken aback as plans of roads that travel over rice fields are touted, this was once considered taboo as any crossing could inhibit the swift travel of the gods who might be called upon to perform tasks throughout the island.

The Deep Sea Explorers (also known as DSE) are a relatively young band of ruffians making waves in the local music scene. They play a cacophony of rock & roll and authentic blues rock and we had a chat with their soulful front man Arya Wawo-Runtu.
www.beatmag.com
Ok Arya, tell us a little bit about yourself and Deep Sea Explorers. My name is Arya. I’m 24 years old. I grew up here in Sanur, Bali. I grew up surrounded by a very artistic family and people, about five years ago I started playing music in the capital thinking that it would be a good place to start a music career. I’ve learned what I could’ve learned there and decided to take it back home and contribute here in Bali because the music scene in Jakarta was too business oriented and politically inclined, so in August 2012 I had a meeting with my bassist Hendro and spoke about forming a new project, and having found two other members Mula and Palel, we then formed Deep Sea Explorers. We spent a lot of time trying to concentrate on finding our own musical identity and in four short months, with the help of the people who supported us, we managed to catch up to what I’ve done in the
previous 4 years, and since then we have just been setting stages on fire and recording our materials. Tell us about your musical influences. I try not to limit myself towards a certain extent in musical influences, so I have a lot of influences from many genres, but, if I have to say what has influenced me the most, it would probably be the blues and rock and roll pioneers from back in 1930s to present time. A lot of musicians who managed to maintain their credibility both musically and artistically. How are you evolving? We are all evolving in this generation, a decade ago our musical resources were limited to a certain extent, now with the internet we have so much more access to things that could help
f e a t u r e
089
You’re relatively new to the game, where do you want to see the band in three years? Or in 10 years? In ten years, I wish to see the band evolve musically, travel a lot more and play great music around the world, cultivate the culture and the nature around us and hopefully inspire people to express themselves. What top five tracks (original or covers) do you most like to play? We love playing two of our newly written songs from our next upcoming EP/Mini Album. They’re called “Gypsy Blue” and “Wildflowers” and our favorite covers are “What I’d Say” by Ray Charles, “Roadrunner” by Bo Diddley and “I’m a King Bee” by Slim Harpo What bugs you about being new to the scene? Nothing worth mentioning about, I love the diversity of music and how people have good energy towards creativity.
Challenges? The challenge is to keep ourselves musically evolving, and not put boundaries to our imagination. Where have you been playing and what kind of feedback have you received? I’ve been playing in many places including Single Fin, Deus Ex Machina, Brewers Beergarden, Art Cafe, Ryoshi, Sandpit Beachshack and lot of other venues and events and the feedback has been very good. I think its because a lot of people here appreciate process more to instant generic culture, but sometimes there are challenges. This is the section where you get to promote your upcoming shows… Our upcoming shows are at Art Cafe on February 1, 8pm onward. We’re also playing at Ryoshi on the 8th, at Single Fin on the 12th, and the Black Valentine party at Kopi Kultur and Art Cafe on February 15 and then, The Beat Deep Party at Pyramid from 11pm sharp on the 16th.

He’s done some horrific time in a filthy Kerobokan prison cell, receives death threats more regularly than an granny has afternoon tea with her friends and yes, this activist turned lawyer admits that he often gets scared. And although he might slow down when he does, he never gives up. One foot in front of the next, this man against the machine is intellectually armed and dangerous, The Beat man Rudoph Dethu catches up with Bali’s numero uno activist and hero of the people.
Back in the early days, you were protesting mostly about social injustice and political offence, but today you seem to have shifted your focus to environmental problems. What made you migrate from bigger to smaller issues? Ha! No, no, there’s no such thing as migrating issues in what I’ve been doing. It’s interesting you ask that though because, in the past, the public may have noticed me more for my work in the areas of social injustice, political crimes, and human rights but, for me, all these things are interconnected. Beginning with my days as a student activist, when the passion I have for such issues first ignited, the environment began to play heavily on my mind, and today it remains as significant an issue as ever. Remember me campaigning against the Serangan Island and Padanggalak Beach land reclaim issues, Pemaron’s coal fired power station and so forth? You see, when you dig deeper, you’ll find that underneath the environmental disputes there are always so many more complex issues; it’s inevitably so much bigger! Don’t get me wrong, in many cases it’s still about environmental justice because a big part of human rights is that the people should share a basic right to live in a clean and well-respected environment. How bad a disaster is Bali’s environment? Who do you think should be responsible for all this ecological degradation? Based on environmental research data, the
natural environment here in Bali is already on the brink, you might say ravished to ruin. We need to take urgent positive action if we are to have a chance at turning this destruction around because each day Bali’s wounds gets deeper and becomes more obvious. If my words don’t have an impact, the following statistics might shock some of you into action: For starters, the Minister for the Environment has predicted that Bali will soon be in the midst of a severe water crisis, requiring as much as 27.6 billion cubic meters per year by 2015. Based on this need, the Environmental Agency of Bali Province recently released a statement explaining that by 2015 Bali will be water deficit. You might also like to keep in mind that, here in Bali, we have 162 rivers, and 34 of them are in a critical condition. Destruction has, and continues to be predominantly caused by the development of tourism facilities like hotels and restaurants along river edges, as well as thanks to the regular removal of river rocks, which are popular material for stone carvings. With regard to forested areas, the Environmental Research Centre at Udayana University suggests that only 27.3 percent of Bali’s forested land remains, approximately 127 hectares of coverage, and at least 18.4 percent of this is in super bad condition. By October 2007, forest fires had burnt
And then we come to Bali’s infamous beaches. I bet you don’t realise that it has been officially acknowledged that there’s at least 140 spots of erosion on the coastal lines of Bali and the the Bali Provincial Environmental Agency has confirmed that there are 13 significant water pollution sites. On top of this, Bali is also threatened by seawater intrusion. In Southern parts of Bali, like Pemogan and Sesetan, this seawater intrusion has reached 100 meters below sea level. This intrusion problem is spreading quickly; in Denpasar intrusion has a depth of around 25 meters but, you watch, it’s not going to take long to reach a more critical point. And it’s the same story for North Bali too.
091
f e a t u r e
through 264.3 hectares, and at least ten cases of illegal logging and other forms of forest mutilation has destroyed 12,720.856 hectares.
Does this make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? It shouldn’t, it’s awful and I have oh so much more data that I could share but it would take up all the pages of this magazine to list them all so, long story short, Bali is racing in the fast lane, racing down the highway to hell. You asked me who should be responsible for this catastrophe? I’d have to say that it’s nobody but the government. The nation, the state, the government! I think it’s their responsibility to promote, to protect, and to fulfill the people’s basic rights to a decent quality, healthy environment. People pay taxes and, in a perfect world, the government is supposed to make sure that the taxpayers, we the people, are looked after.
You don’t seem to be much of a tourism fan! That’s a premature conclusion! Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m definitely aware that the economy of Bali is most prominently energised by the tourism sector but, on the other hand,
www.beatmag.com
So water, soil and forest are the three biggest problems that Bali needs to sort out? And fast?! Yes, those three things are closely related to Balinese culture because we are an agricultural society, and agrarian culture depends on two main sources; water and soil. When these two elements are in crisis it means that Balinese culture is in a state of degradation too and, as Bali is fundamentally dependent on what people call “cultural tourism,” when Balinese culture is rotten, we are screwed. I mean, what else will Bali be able offer to tourists?
f e a t u r e
092
as I said, if Bali is primarily sold as a cultural tourism destination, then Bali, as a destination, should be serious about maintaining its agrarian culture. It’s important to understand that if we remain careless with our culture and allow the savage exploitation of our water and soil to continue, the consequence to both culture and tourism will be absolute deterioration. We will have nothing left. In saying that, I support Bali tourism—but only quality tourism—tourism that is not exploitative to its natural resources and doesn’t disgrace the culture here. We don’t want what I like to call mining industry tourism. Balinese are taught Tri Hita Karana, and because of this, in our day-today activities we are instructed to take care of the environment, in whatever we do. When the beach is polluted, the groundwater brackish, the forest without trees, and the rice fields have become industrial zones, Bali will end up being Bali minus agrarian culture, and what is Bali then? What else can we offer? So, there you go, the answer is that quality tourism needs to exist parallel with Tri Hita Karana philosophy. How’s the government responding to all your protests? I keep shouting, screaming, and writing complaints but, even though I’m doing this, the government hasn’t accommodated the protests. To me this means that they are clueless. In truth, the government has no adaptive policies for environmental troubleshooting.
www.beatmag.com
More often than not, our protests have been regarded as destructive moves rather than constructive solutions and, as our protests are not considered serious, they have been responded to with unproductive statements, responses which can only be described as a significant disrespect upon our right to express our perspectives—rights which are supposedly guaranteed by Indonesian law. In a few of these cases, such statements from the government have forced us, Walhi, to sue the Governor through the Denpasar Civil Service Arbitration Tribunal. In one such case, permission was given to PT Tirta Rahmat Bahari to manage the mangrove park of Ngurah Rai. There have also been many cases where the governor has let developments go ahead even though they are in complete breech of environmental law. But the same thing has happened with the parliament, especially Commission III, which focuses on environment. It’s a complete joke. There are times when they act as if they appreciate our activities, and support us by, say,
releasing harsh statements to environmental criminals, but then they retract. All of a sudden they just change; they’ll swing from angry to a bit calmer, from calm to taking sides, and then wham, they make us their enemy! It was a bit of a sad joke when the Secretary of Commission III asked us to send a letter of admonition to the Badung Regent regarding the development of Hotel Mulia in Nusa Dua. Oh, and also when the general public requested to know how come Commission III weren’t progressing with the mangrove park problem, they said that they are waiting for Walhi to send a formal letter to the court. Isn’t it a little weird how legislative action is dependent on us initiating a move? I mean, isn’t that their job? Some people say that the institution that you are the head of, Wahli, is secretly driven by overseas interests and by new cultural imperialists… I’m not at all interested in answering this kind of shallow rumour. I am, we are, openly driven by our conscience, by our idealism. Next question, please. How can we keep Bali beautiful? Can you enlighten me, and the rest of the people out there, in three easy steps? 1. Start living an environmentally friendly kind of life. Don’t just talk about slogans and teachings such as Tri Kita Karana, apply them in your actual life. 2. Watch over policies regarding environment, and then promote the information. You can start by searching for, sharing and discussing issues using social media. 3. Get out of the house and participate. Rally, protest, be a part of positive change. To participate, you don’t need no money, just a whole lot of spirit! Well, no, sorry, I don’t want you to think it’s going to be easy. You know how they say that it’s not easy being green? It’s true, but if we work hard, if we all go green together, it’ll be way easier. Last nagging words? “The world is big enough to satisfy everyone needs, but will always be too small to satisfy everyone’s greed.” Those are Ghandi’s words.

Together, the two talented chefs have worked hard to expand the menu, filling it with an incredible mix of flavours and ingredients. Dining with a good mate who’s also something of a wannabe foodie, we’re extremely privileged to be some of the first people to try out Nick and Luis’ creations.A trilogy of appetizers kicks the evening off in style, first of all with the Korean Inspired Tacos (60k++) from the street food section, which consist of braised beef cheeks, ‘napa’ cabbage slaw and avocado condiment. Next, from the grazing section, the Foie Gras Burger (95k++) blows us both away – the ultimate in gourmet burger-ishness, it’s a lavish stack of melt-in-the-mouth foie gras, pear and apple jam, frisse and duck bacon (incredible, in case you were wondering) with thick hand cut chips on
the side. Finally, from the tapas section we tuck into the Pulpo a la Gallega (45k++), a tasty trio of confit octopus and potato in black garlic sauce. A glass of the Califonian Barefoot Merlot (an extremely reasonable 85k++) handles the interlude, before we dive into the Tartare Of Atlantic Salmon, Swimmer Crab And Yellow Fin Tuna (100k++) from the entrée section. Accompanied by senbie crackers, wasabi bubbles and yuzu gel, I’d wager that Luis can take most of the credit for this one. From the mains we devour a helping of the beyond tender Angus Eye Fillet (300k++) with beef cheek cigarillo, sweet potato and mushroom ragout before ending up on the Bubur Injin (70k++) for dessert, complete with smoked fruits, tangerine sorbet and coconut emulsion. It all sounds like a lot and we are suitably stuffed, but this is just a small selection from what is clearly a bold, innovative and fresh new Cocoon menu. With food that delights, surroundings that entice and music that excites, Cocoon Beach Club provides a five-star sleek and stylish experience from the word go. Dan Ashcroft

Vol au Vent
B
ahiana is mostly known for its Cuban-ness and one might safely assume that it is mostly a place to get some drinks and have a wild night out. This of course is true, but you should also consider eating there as they do have a lovely menu filled with some very palatable dishes, one of which is their Vol au Vent. It’s a puff pastry filled with chicken, mushrooms, in a creamy blend of white wine and cheese that hits that savory spot perfectly. It comes with a small salad and a miniature pallet of stacked French fries. You can enjoy this savory masterpiece for a mere 55k.

It’s tangy, refreshing and possesses a mild sweetness that doesn’t overwhelm the taste buds. The cocktail seems very appropriate for a nice cool down after walking the streets of Kuta under a tropical sun. You can enjoy the Unstoppable for a mere 65k.

The Civil Wars
Barton Hollow
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
I
t’s amazing how in some cases less equals so much more, and it would be hard to get any less than the sparse arrangements of Californian Joy Williams and Tennessee dandy John Paul White AKA The Civil Wars. It’s a suitably apt name for a band where both members actually look like they have just time traveled forward from 1860s Kentucky, but according to their blog, the group’s name also refers to “the good, the bad, and the ugly of relationships”. Released over a year ago but only recently finding its way into my music collection, the double Grammy-winning “Barton Hollow” is, for the most part, simply a case of two fantastically talented people modestly jamming to create an album that feels so much more than the sum of its parts. Their voices weave around each other in the kind of ‘are they/aren’t they together’ tension that worked so well for the White Stripes. (They’re not by the way, Williams is married to the band’s manager, but with exchanges like; “she’s the sea I’m sinkin’ in/he’s the ink under my skin” on “Birds of a Feather”, I’d imagine her hubby is watching them like a hawk. With only the occasional plucked double bass and mournful fiddle for company to add subtle depth and texture, there’s otherwise no frills or over the top production tweaks - just two voices and a guitar that go together like whiskey in a tumbler – wistful introspective little ditties like “20 Years” and “Poison & Wine” are the prime examples. Only once do we see the pair bare their teeth with the foot stomping title track “Barton Hollow” providing a bit of racy grit to break up the proceedings. “I’m a dead man walkin’,” howls White, obviously relishing the chance to dust off his steel guitar and give it some welly. Meanwhile, bonus track and album closer (and, if I may say so, Jacko’s best song EVER) “Billie Jean” is an inventive spin on the king of pop’s 1982 classic that shows just how effective it can be when a song is covered in a totally different style to the original. A stunning debut, I have a sneaky suspicion we’re going to hear a lot more great things from this pair in the very near future. Dan Ashcroft

The SOS (Source to the Sea) Proyek was the second half of the Put Up Or Shut Up Freesurfing Championship that took place in late 2012 at Grajagan in Java. The event was won by Tai Graham with Coca-Cola Surf Team Dede Suryana, Tipi Jabrik, and Mustofa Jeksen participating, along with Uluwatu’s Made Lana, Billabong’s Rahtu Suargita, and American Chris Ward. Each invitee to the Put Up Free Surfing Championship signed a manifesto on the night of the Awards ceremony sealing a promise to honor all Indonesian waterways and seas.
www.beatmag.com
On the afternoon of the January 19, 2013,the SOS project got underway led by Coca Cola Surf Ambassador Mustofa Jeksen, Billabong’s Rahtu Suargita, Rip Curl’s Diah Rahayu Dewi and Oakley’s Dewa Ardika. They traveled up to the sacred Volcano of Mt. Batur overlooking Lake Batur. Lake Batur is the source of all the water of South Bali and the surfers were going there to honor it. At dawn on the 20th, the pro surfer procession climbed Mount Batur to its Summit of 1,717m where all involved took part in a ceremony that honored all the waterways of Indonesia and gave thanks for the surf spots they provide. After the descent, the procession continued on, following the great Bali waterways and rivers down to Echo Beach in Canggu where over 100 people, including top Government officials, rolled up their sleeves and combed the beach for litter. By day’s end the surrounding beaches of Canggu were spotless. Mustofa, Diah, Rahtu and Ardika then took to the sea in a quiet ceremony where they gave personal thanks for the honor of being able to travel from the Source to the Sea all in one day.
“This was a real achievement for me,” said Rahtu Suargita, “To be able to stand on top of a mountain a realize that the lake below provides all the water for the rivers that give us sandbars to surf over. And that the rivers also shape the reef passes that give us our barrels. It was a spiritual journey that I will never forget.” During the climb, three other great simultaneous beach cleanups were taking place involving locals, surfers, government and banjar leaders, took place at Barawa Beach, Padang Padang Beach and Uluwatu. After the beach clean ups, the entire procession marched to the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm where a fundraising party kicked off in style featuring Bali’s own Rollfast band and headliner Made J. It was a memorable evening of music and celebration of our great environment as the fundraiser got underway to raise money for ROLE Foundation and Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu. The fun went late as all celebrated our great environment and all the joy it provides for us. “It was an unforgettable journey of environmentalism and surfing celebration that we will never forget,” said Curtis Lowe from ESRU. Big thanks to Coca Cola Amatil and the ROLE Foundation for all the support. Get ready for next year, this is going to be an annual event.

Yayaa Art Space is hosting a special painting exhibition by Chinese artist Ye Lu for the Chinese New Year. Tackling the theme “Qi Pao in Red”, the exhibition reminds us of the long history of Qi Pao, a traditional dress for Chinese women with a history dating back for nearly 600 years. The style of Qi Pao has also evolved according to the changing tastes of society. Inexorably, the form and history of the Qi Pao can draw parallels to the complexity of the culture from which it was born. The artist, Ye Lu, personally thinks that wearing a Qi Pao and even painting it is a meaningful way to celebrate this year’s Chinese New Year. Discover this Chinese hallmark within the exhibition which will be going on until February 22.

or Putu Wirantawan, art is like exploring various possibilities to find out about oneself. He tried diverse media to explore his artistic soul, before he finally settled with drawing. Born in Jembrana in 1972, Wirantawan finished his studies at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta) in 2005 and earnestly started exploring drawing techniques in depth. From then onwards, he often had solo and collaborative exhibitions notably in Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Germany, USA and Singapore. His works are also included in the collections of many museums around the world. Presently, Wirantawan’s solo exhibition titled “Mata Kosmis Wirantawan” (Wirantawan’s Cosmic Eye) is being held at Bentara Budaya Bali. The exhibition showcases his explorative works all the way from 2008 up to 2012. Through his drawing techniques combined with the use of pencil and paper, Wirantawan reflects

Look:
Tucked away on the rooftop of Anantara Seminyak, their intimate spa offers a wealth of health-based treatments in beautifully decorated rooms rich with opulent fabrics in shades of purple and crisp white. Anantara’s spa is inspired by a finely tuned repertoire of health and beauty concepts that deliver with intoxicating authenticity.
Feel:
The signature massage at Anantara spa is itself a perfect mix of purpose-designed movements that is quite unique. Taking the best of Thai massages and blending it with Balinese long strokes, the massage is designed to focus on areas of tension while restoring the flow of energy. The masseuse took me completely by surprise by finding every area of tension and working it out-the man could feel my pain. Wonderful.
Ingredients:
With the signature massage comes a signature oil, a spicy blend of ginger and lavender with clove and floral overtones, it is warm and lovely. Turmeric also plays a role in the beauty treatments, designed to be gentle yet effective and combined with other active ingredients goes to work naturally and beautifully to correct any skin problems. Both men, women and children are catered for and the chocolate massage for kids is bound to be a huge hit.

Trained therapists who are also intuitive are not as common as it should be in spas, great attention is paid here to the therapeutic benefits of the treatments and the difference is marked, as I said, the man could feel my pain. It’s a little more expensive with the one hour signature massage starting at 650k, but the effects make it truly worthwhile.
