Love is a beautiful thing, at least in the first moments when one person fills your heart and thoughts with deep pleasure. Just thinking about them gives you pleasure. A simple gesture, a phone call, a three syllable message can brighten your day to an unforeseen joy in those first moments of a new relationship. Anything is possible; worlds and mountains can be moved and conquered with the ease of saying a simple “hello”. At some point though reality kicks in and suddenly what didn’t bother you a couple of months before is now manifesting itself as a make or break situation. Everything is going worse and nothing you do appears to fix it. It is a shame it comes to this point every time but at the same time you have to accept that the moment of reality arriving at the front door of your relationship is a positive thing; it either makes it or breaks it. You work through it or you don’t, and if you don’t you have to move on. And that’s never such an easy thing. Valentine’s Day comes along every year at this time and we all get the chance to think about love and our position within it. On the whole, most people wouldn’t think much about Valentine’s Day and think it’s nothing more than a commercialization of another of our collective sentiments to take more cash off us. But there may be something to it. If you are in a relationship that may be becoming a little stale or lackluster it could be the moment to give your partner a simple compliment or give her or him a nice surprise. Just telling them how lovely they are could always do you some good. And who knows, maybe it will come back your way too and the feelings will grow to make a better relationship for both of you. Give it a try. It may well make a better relationship for you and your partner. And then take her/him out for dinner. There are plenty of options inside to choose from. Good luck and happy loving…

Body Music by Khalid Freeman and Sanggar Cudamani A collaborative project by the world performer Khalid “Greens” Freeman and Sanggar Cudamani will finally grace Bali at Betel Nut Restaurant, Ubud. Ricardo del Horno or simply del Horno initially made his breakthrough into the dance realm by getting a job as a funky DJ in the 80s, more specifically in 1988. As time went by, he inserted more house chops into his sets, turning his earliest portfolio into a valuable gift to the already vibrant music scene in Barcelona. He soon got a wider recognition after moving into larger venues, where he held residencies like, the famous Chasis where he performed before some 10k punters each weekend, and at Deloca from 2002 until 2006 where he shared the decks with the crème de la crème DJs in the country.

Where you might have heard him Del Horno has been collaborating with many other outstanding musicians ever since he started his gig at Chasis and one of his outfits called The Messiahs even won the title of Progressive Group of the Year and the Best techno-dance DJ by the magazine DJ1 in 2000. While also being the head of label Tune of Vale Music, three CDs under Chasis name went gold and two more reached platinum. Horno has also been featured on Maxima FM – a famous dance radio in Barcelona and Madrid. He was a resident DJ at topmost music scenes such as at Zona Club in Moscow, at Space Ibiza (for Cafe Ole party), at Louie Vega club (Spain), at the famous club La Terrraza in Barcelona, as well as at Prestige Production and After Sun (Mac-Arena) Beach 2012. Just April last year, he dropped his best original so far entitled “Desire” on Younan Music and has since been remixed by Saaed Younan.

In her teens, Ngelik began partaking in ‘Voz Liceista’ or high school voice in English (a competition organized by the Instituto Educacional Juan XXIII for students to showcase their vocal skills), taking up a modeling class, studying fashion design, doing modeling jobs, and even getting casted to be in a music video by internationally acclaimed band Los Amigos Invisibles.

Only in 2004, her specific penchant for EDM dawned upon her mind and soul in full force, and thereafter, decided to take mixing classes from her friend, DJ Ennio Vizconti as well as the support from DJ Irak before she debuted as a DJ at a venue called Belle Epoque in 2005. A year later, DJ Ngelik had already gone international, with her first show abroad in Panama, and her first contract with Germany-based music agency Evolution Music, where she met DJ Meg – her other half in their outfit called Manga Dolls, widelyacclaimed as Venezuela’s EDM representative to the world. DJ Ngelik, for once, was in a rock band as the singer and lead voice and got to perform on various occasions, but it was a short-lived one for her, as she wanted to dedicate her whole time only for spinning tracks. To her career’s strength and success, she won #1 Top DJs Venezuela in 2007, second best female DJ in the Top 100 category, #1 female DJ in Caracas city, #1 DJ in the Tech-house category in 2008 edition and most recently, second in the prestigious annual poll of the World Sexiest Model DJ 2013. He started his career as a manager of Sound Quest Entertainment Group based in Toronto in 1997, where he later found his love for the turntables. He started to learn spinning with the help of his friend until he finally became a Sound Quest DJ. Since then, he started his profession as a DJ as well as an emcee in some hip-hop/R&B parties. His love for music has opened the door to explore his many talents; he returned to Indonesia and joined the popular R&B band Brown Sugar as one of their lead vocalists. He is now working with the Soul Menace family, utilizing his experience as an MC and a rapper to bring a new level of excitement to the forefront.

Her other notable albums include Can’t Turn Around (2003), My Auntie (2005) and Cassy 1 (2006). She has started her own label ‘Cassy’, and regularly spins at some of the world’s coolest clubs such as Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Frankfurt’s Cocoon. Her bright talent behind the decks then pushed Rolling Stone to name her as one of the ‘25 DJs who Rule the Earth’ in 2012.

Noir is one of today’s best music acts coming from Denmark. Born in the Danish city of Aalborg as René Kristensen, he grew up listening to Kraftwerk’s music from the 80s. In 2003, he even abandoned his daytime job to focus on pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a full-time DJ. That dream was realized in 2003 and Noir spent most of 2004 crafting his sounds before storming the scene in 2005.

Where you might have heard him From day one, 2005 brought a whole lot of opportunities for Noir, including his international breakthrough release “All About House Music” on Wyze Recordings and afterwards his debut EP entitled “F--k Me” also got dropped but on Deeplay Music. A year later, his next original track entitled “My MTV” hit #1 on digital music charts and outlets like Beatport, DJ Download, and Traxsource, earning him support from the big fish in the industry such as Dubfire, Carl Cox, Luciano, Pete Tong, Mark Knight, Nic Fanciulli and Roger Sanchez. He expanded his wings a year later by founding his own labels called Noir Music and NM2 on which he regularly reached the top chart spot. Noir clinched the awards as Upfront Deejay of the Year at the DDJA 2009, Producer of the Year in 2010 and 2011, DJ of the Year in 2011 and also Upfront Track of the Year for his 2010-released single “Africanism” on Neurotraxx Deluxe which also peaked at Beatport’s deephouse chart and then stayed at Top 10 for more than four months. Since 2010, his legion of fans can also access his tunes (Noir Recommends series) at their own leisure from his Noir Music Podcasts (via iTunes). 2013 marked him joining the ranks of Defected and releasing Noir in the House compilations which raised people’s expectations of him.

ali Adventure Tours present a large range of options for an adventurous day out for visitors to Bali. One of which is rafting which my school friend Bonny and I participated in recently. The rafting experience is a thrilling and beautiful activity which I would recommend to anyone. The adventure began when we were picked up from our house by the Bali Adventure Tours vehicle. It was a wild day with wind and rain but we were in safe hands on the way to our destination which was about an hour away from Seminyak. After arriving we quickly registered, jumped back in the car and drove further up to where our rafting would begin. Once we got dressed with our PFD’s (life vests) and helmets we walked down the stairs in the midst of hundreds of trees. The river where the white water rafting took place was the most beautiful thing we had ever seen surrounded by enormous trees and the sounds of wildlife. Bonny and I were put into a boat with another couple and after a few minutes of being told some safety regulations we headed off on our twohour journey through the Ayung River. The whole

experience was a combination of exhilaration and peacefulness; we passed many amazing waterfalls and beautiful animals. The scenery took our breath away; huge walls made up of trees, flowers and grass surrounded us from start to finish, definitely something you wouldn’t want to miss! After the rafting had finished, we were both quite exhausted however we were quickly greeted by an all-you-can-eat buffet back at the building where we began, which is included for all rafters. After eating the most delicious meal we were given a tour around the new Bali Adventures facility. There are two bedrooms for rent with incredible views and a large pool looking over the jungle, a spa that offers massages, foot reflexology, a steam room, nail salon and more. There are also three event areas, one on the roof top and two on the floor below; one of which can be used for special occasions such as weddings. There’s also a bakery, a sushi bar, and a gift shop; all managed by great and caring staff. y grandfather had an expression, “How’m I ever gonna raise you?” he used to ask. I am kind of asking myself the same about Bali right now. We’re used to it raining garbage each time we have a storm but this year it seems so much worse. The trash piled up on the beach each day almost defies belief, how did this happen? While right on the beachfront glossier and glossier projects are opening, you have to ask: Do these people not look out the window? Feeling powerless to help, clean up, change it, is not an uncommon reaction, especially in the face of literally mountains of garbage, tons of it. There is a lot of dialogue on social media and the mainstream press as well and if you set aside the ranters and the blamers, some real problems exist and viable solutions. One Facebooker responded to a photo posted by surf photographer, Jason Childs, by pointing out the existing problems with garbage collection and disposal. “We pay them to take it away but we don’t pay them enough to dispose of it properly. So much of it ends up on empty land which then washes into the rivers in the rain and straight into the sea.” Good point. The sanitation department of Bali is often quoted as saying that they are underfunded and don’t have enough trucks. The designated garbage drop offs are filled most times and no infrastructure exists for disposing of it properly, it simply builds up. Without a multi-faceted approach, which includes education, but also an integrated disposal system that actually works, that same garbage keeps reappearing. So, in the end, picking up the rubbish is only a band-aid. This is obviously just one area; Bali still lacks basic infrastructure for sewage in many areas, and there is an out of sight out of mind mentality that exists and

so many of us are guilty of this. Just because the garbage gets removed from the front of your house, doesn’t mean you should ask questions about where they take it, what they do with it. Recycling exists here on a very grass roots level and there are some companies funding local schemes as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programmes (CSR) but it is a drop in the ocean, literally. We all have to work together to find schemes, fund them, follow through as relying on the government to do it is just another way of turning your back on it. We have to ask questions, and that includes asking those poor souls we pay to take our household waste away; where are they taking it to? Of course, there are a lot more Balinese living here and it isn’t simply a matter of do-gooder expatriates trying to change the system but many of them are busy enough trying to exist on low wages, garbage is the last things on their minds.They also don’t have the budgets to buy larger items so subsist on those singleuse packets of shampoo and rinso which are all over the beach. There is no single solution to this problem, and it isn’t enough for one group or another to take on the issue of garbage disposal and cutting down on plastic use. Another Facebooker points out that it isn’t only packaging, plastic is in our clothes that leaks out into the washing which then goes into the water system. There are so many things wrong, it’s hard to know where to start but what is clear is that each one of us living in Bali, no matter where we’re from, is part of the problem. It is to the point where it threatens people’s existence, their health, their livelihood and the cash cow; tourism. It’s time to put some serious thought into solving this problem before it eats us all alive, the garbage is taking over folks! [Sarah Dee]

To end his warmongering husband’s reign, Queen Alcmene conceives a son from Zeus called Hercules (Kellan Lutz) or Alcides in the first part of the movie. Hercules, whose love interest is Hebe (Gaia Weiss) is sent to exile by his stepfather aka the King for Hebe. From there, the film starts to take us through Hercules’ action-packed odyssey back to fulfill his destiny, bring peace to his people and reunite with Hebe. It might resemble 300 or Gladiator to some of you and that’s what the filmmakers probably wanted, but this film has almost universally been panned by audience and critics alike. If I were you, I’d skip this one.

This is a tale of a zero becoming a hero in the land of Lego. The main character here is Emmet (Chris Pratt) who is the savior of the Lego universe from the evil tyrant Lord Business (Will Ferrell). Batman and Superman also lend their powers to Emmet and his team’s epic quest, other DC heroes like Green Lantern and Wonder Woman will also make their appearances. From the filmmakers of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (1 and 2), this animated comedy actually looks amazing. So don’t cringe when you have to bring a child to watch this one, it seems like a lot more than a crappy product placement film.

With it’s soft folky tones and press release portraits straight out of a Kinfolk photo spread, James Vincent McMorrow’s 2010 debut Early in the Morning looked set to pick up the ‘troubled troubadour’ baton from the likes of fellow Irish songwriter Damien Rice. Quite a surprise then, to find that on album number two the beardy Dubliner has decided to trade in his guitars for samplers, stripping things back even more to a distinctly un-folky kind of indie sub-genre that has elements of electronic, hip-hop, and particularly R&B. Don’t let the pink flamingo tropical cover art fool you, Post Tropicalis, as it’s name suggests, like the impending ice age after global warming - an album of wintry soundscapes populated by taciturn pianos and muted drum machines, with only McMorrow’s delicate vocalsproviding a little warmth for the soul. And what vocals they are, swinging from a hushed whisper to woodsman’s falsetto and back with effortless grace. Lead single “Cavalier” and the heartbreaking “Red Dust” stand out as the album’s two strongest tracks, and beautifully highlight his range – “Sometimes my hands they don’t feel like my own/I need someone to love I need someone to hold” he repeats in the closing bars of the latter, with a fragility that is both tragic and uplifting; bloody hell someone give this man a hug now. The Bon Iver comparisons are inevitable, but unlike Justin Vernon, McMorrow paints more of a widescreen panorama, cinematic in its scope and depth. Yes, the sparse finger picked guitars in the opening to “Repeating” do offer parallels to 2007’s For Emma, Forever Ago, but elsewhere the uplifting climaxes of “Gold” and “Look Out” flesh out a more theatrical picture. There is a marked lack of structure to most of the tracks, which often drift along in the wasteland without any clear sense of direction or narrative, like a modern day T. S. Eliot poem. That said, taken as a whole, the experience is worthwhile – the album is a classic example of a ‘grower’ that encourages quiet introspection from repeated listens. If you need cheering up then avoid at all costs, but for everyone else it’s the perfect accompaniment for the January blues. Dan Ashcroft

Innovative British home appliance manufacturer Dyson recently unveiled several new vacuum cleaners, including the DC59. The handheld cordless stick vacuum is the latest in Dyson’s Digital Slim line and gives up to 26 minutes of use on a single charge with a suction power that’s three times more powerful than those currently on the market. Other features include the bagless dust trap, which opens and empties at the touch of a button, and a Boost mode that gives six minutes of increased power for more difficult tasks. While many found Sony’s QX line of cameras to be entirely unorthodox, it seems as though the engineers at Sony weren’t the only ones thinking out of the box. Kodak recently unveiled its own take on the emerging “lens camera” market with its PixPro Smart Lens SL10 and SL25 offerings. Meant to pair with your mobile phone via iOS or Android, it is controlled via a free app. In regards to specs, a microSD card stores images captured by either a 10x zoom at 28-280mm (SL10) or a 25x zoom at 24-600mm (SL25). The slated prices are below that of the Sony, set to ring in at $199 and $299 USD respectively for the SL10 and SL25.

Jawbone ERA Ergonomic Bluetooth Headset Jawbone recently introduced the ERA, its smallest, lightest and most ergonomic Bluetooth headset yet. The product of three years of development and user testing, the ERA boasts a new shape that uses the natural contour of the ear, allowing it to be comfortably worn throughout the day as the user listens to music, makes calls and communicates with virtual assistant applications. It is 42% more compact than its predecessors and features a long-lasting battery that gives it almost 10 hours of talk time and comes with a sturdy aluminum charging case. Sony 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector

At this year’s CES, Sony unveiled its brand new 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector. Designed to take up less space than traditional projector systems, the Ultra Short Throw Projector can beam 66″ to 147″ 4K resolution images from just 20 inches away. The home entertainment system also houses two separate speakers to create an immersive viewing and listening experience. If 3D is more your thing, the projector can do that too, throwing up 1080p 3D images as well as displaying output from a computer at up to 1920 x 1200 resolution. All this tech doesn’t come cheap though, as Sony has this thing priced at $40,000 USD. Expect it to go on sale sometime this summer.

Bang & Olufsen Essence Music Streaming System Bang & Olufsen has jumped into the streaming music market with the unveiling of its Essence streaming system. The Essence consists of a round aluminum controller and a white streaming unit. The controller features touch-sensitive controls and motion sensors, which allow the controller to play music when it detects someone walking into the room and to fade away when the person exits the room. The streaming unit is designed to stream music wirelessly and supports Apply AirPlay, DLNA streaming, Spotify Connect, QPlay and internet radio stations. ntonius Kho is an Indonesian painter who has received recognition in the international art scene with his contemporary work. His art is rooted from his search of identity, and he turns this experience into a cosmic fusion of art on his canvas.

Kho first learned art under the guidance of a wellknown artist by the name of Barli in Bandung. He continued to explore art and found the rudiments of his style at the Academy of Fine Arts Bandung. His art was then honed in Germany, where he continued his exploration of art at Academy of Fine Arts FH-Cologne.

Kho’s art is a fusion of East and West, inspired by cubist and abstract style. It mostly consists of figures or faces and is structured in the manner of mosaics. It is split in geometric elements yet readable in their iconographic entirety. His works used to express the tension of isolation around himself and the communication with others. However, it is now conveying better messages about love and the defeat of pessimism. Kho came back to Indonesia in 1998 and decided to settle in Bali. In 2004, he opened his own space, Wina Gallery on a peaceful hill of Ubud. From his idyllic studio, he now creates seductive and contemporary visualizations of Indonesian culture and mythology. Kho is not only regularly exhibiting Indonesia, but also internationally. He is a pioneer of intercultural art exchange programs in the Southeast Asian region and now is working on his latest project of Indonesia and Thailand cultural exchange titled “Neo Barbarian”. Through this joint exhibition, Kho and other artists involved want to share the art and culture of Indonesia and Thailand in the actual area by giving an opportunity to learn the aspect of attitude, way of life, history and belief through the context of contemporary art.
