Here we go for another massive high season in Bali – it’s now August. This past July has been a mixed bag for sure as the weather hasn’t been ideal with a lot of grey skies, and with Ramadhan all around and effecting local Indonesian and especially Jakarta arrivals, July has been far from high in many parts. But it has had its highlights. The recent Stafford Brothers show down at Sky and the SPF Party at W were more than successful, the restaurants down Jl. Laksman have been jumping and bars and clubs have been ramma jamma. You can read all about the happening events over the past two weeks in the ThereThen section inside. This weekend starts solidly with Misshapes at hu’u bar and Riri Mestika at Boshe. Splash is back at Cocoon on Sunday. KU DE TA is also back in the fray soon with their illustrious Bikini Day Party on Aug 10 and then later The White Party with a massive line-up of star DJs. It will be awesome to be back partying with that Function One sound system again. Sky has another very good DJ coming next Saturday, Ummet Ozcan from Holland and Cocoon sees the return of Joey Negro on Aug 16. Two jazz festivals are also on the way, first in Ubud and then in Tanjung Benoa. Check the Mainstage for details. There are plenty of shows and sure to be plenty of people packing every venue during the month of August and especially after Idul Fitri brings Ramadhan to a close and a sizable chunk of local Indonesians will be back with their cars and families filling the roads, once more bringing with them the famed Idul Fitri traffic congestion. Speaking of which, the new toll road connecting the airport with Nusa Dua and Benoa is slated to open on August 14, the same day as the province of Bali’s anniversary, which will be a momentous occasion for the island. In the last editorial we asked what people thought EDM, or edm, was all about. We had a flood of replies from readers and answers from DJs around town and have compiled the results inside. In the end and according to respondents it’s a bit of both. It could be Electronic Dance Music or the commercial banging mashing dance music young dudes seem to get into down Kuta way. But for me it’s definitely a genre of its own and the kids appear to love it – personally I’d prefer to forget it. Give me a bit of vocal house or trance any day.

The Misshapes

Friday aug 2

Roots

If you follow the fashion industry, you might have stumbled upon ‘The Misshapes’. The Misshapes are the epitome of New York’s bustling music and fashion scenes. This notorious phenomenon started in 2004 by way of throwing a party for some 300 young hedonists in New York which later became a regular thing. The trio consists of DJ/model Leigh Lezark along with Geordon Nicol and Greg Krelenstein.

Sounds

Electronic, indie, electro, new rave

Where you might have heard them

At the zenith of their popularity the zeitgeisty trio released a self-titled stylebook, edited by Geordon Nicol which contains hundreds of pages of fashion portraits and thousands of other images of NYC’s city scenes taken by Julian Gilbert, Karl Lagerfeld, Ryan McGinley, and Patrick McMullan. Since their formation up till 2008, their weekly gig in downtown New York had attracted a string of DJs and live performers including the likes of Steve Aoki, Madonna, Yoko Ono and Kelly Osbourne. Since then, The Misshapes have shifted their focus on one-off events in locations around the world. They can be seen playing at international fashion shows, rubbing shoulders with some of the global leaders in the fashion industry. The Misshapes have always been strong supporters, along with other celebrities, a number of causes mainly of the Human Rights Campaign and of ONE, an organization fighting against AIDS and extreme poverty. They’ve also been featured in Vogue.

Why see them

The Misshapes are a Cinderella story of sorts and now all they have to do is be cool, hang out with celebrities and select music at fashion shows and parties. The Misshapes will play without Greg Krelenstein in Bali but fear not, you’ll be in good hands. Leigh and Geordon play at Hu’u Bar on August 2.

Keith Colaço

sunday aug 4

Roots

The Singapore music scene is not to be disregarded despite the size of the city-state. The country’s homegrown DJ slash music director Keith Colaço will tell you why. He spent his childhood listening to everything from Harry Belafonte, to Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye and even Kiss. The 40-year-old DJ who goes by DJ KFC at night (just for the record, no pun intended, they are his initials) embarked on spinning records when he was 30. He is now responsible for designing the music played in many bars and restaurants such as The White Rabbit at Dempsey Hill.

Sounds

House, new wave, synth pop, techno

Where you might have heard him

Pigeonholing Keith is no easy task. He has touched the multitudes of genres with true skill and appreciation. He is going places, from Shanghai, to Hong Kong, and to Bali. His eclectic taste of bespoke music headlined many exclusive events such as the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Sessions (2008-2010), the 10th Anniversary Zoukout Music Festival, World Of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) and F1 Rocks and at up and coming venues like Kee Club Hong Kong and Alfred Dunhill’s flagship store in Shanghai. On a side note, Keith was one of the founders of one of Singapore’s indie bands, Electrico, in 1996 which wrote and sang the theme song of Singapore National Day Parade in 2009, however he left the band a year after it being founded. That aside, DJ KFC currently holds weekly residencies at Loof and Over Easy as well as monthly gigs at Tanjong Beach Club, Singapore.

The young 23 year old born in Jakarta, has kept her singing ability, which is her favorite pastime, a gem from much media exposure until her graduation from senior high school. Where you might have heard hER

These three songs successfully stayed on Top 3 chart positions (#1 for the last two singles) for weeks since its release. On top of that, the album itself was the fifth most sold album of the year in 2012. Her name and quality also received lots of applauds in her appearances in the Java Jazz Festival 2012 and 2013. From then on, Raisa’s career just gets better and better. She did a duet with the maestro, David Foster in his concert entitled Hitman David Foster & Friends Asia Tour 2012 which also featured Grammy Award-winning musicians like Babyface and Chaka Khan. Early this year, she lent her single “Firasat” (2013) to be one of the five soundtracks of Indonesia’s highly-acclaimed novelist, Dewi ‘Dee’ Lestari’s movie – Rectoverso. Most recently, Raisa has just released a single entitled “Bye-bye” with lyrics entirely in English as a teaser to her upcoming RnB album due for release in either September of October this year.

Why see hER

In only about two years, Raisa has enjoyed so much commercial success in the competitive Indonesian music scene. You’ve been into art since you were young but I remember you were in a band once. I never thought you’d end up as a photographer. When did you decide that? How come?

that, later on, I found out that being a musician, performing in cafes, wasn’t really something that I could survive from. The money was never enough. It was quite a frustrating situation...

Being in a band, being a musician, was my ultimate childhood dream. I started learning electone when I was really really young—mind you, in the early 80s, that geeky, nerdy instrument was considered cool. When I got older I moved to keyboard and when I was in high school, joined a band. I played mostly jazz, as this was the music that I was totally hooked on at the time. In the beginning, I really enjoyed that life and I really believed that music would be my future! But as time went by, I found things got harder, musically speaking. As a self-taught musician, I was practising five to six hours a day almost everyday, yet I felt stuck. I became frustrated because no matter how much effort I put in, I didn’t progress much with my skill level. The kicker really was

The crucial turning point for me happened when my uncle came back from a trip to Japan. He brought a massive fancy camera back with him. The first I’d ever seen of this calibre! It was the best model Canon SLR with all the lenses and a big hammer flash. I was so stoked. That day I dumped music and moved my heart to photography.

98

www.beatmag.com

So you enrolled in a photography course? Did you land a job in photography job right away? If I remember correctly, it wasn’t that easy for you… I didn’t really go straight into learning photography, not properly. I learned mostly from books. At the time I’d just started taking classes in economy at Trisakti University in Jakarta. But

due to my new hobby, I couldn’t really put my mind on to it. I was too focused on analysing my camera and its functions, taking pictures of my buddies (that includes you, Dethu), taking pictures of gorgeous models (and dating them), taking pictures of everything. My life became about photography which took me far away from my uni studies. My dad was very upset but he couldn’t really stop me. He witnessed me building quite a reputation amongst high society, getting invited to celebrity weddings and taking photos for them. I made my own money from photography. He decided that I might need a break from uni and so he allowed me to have a photography course in Singapore, for a year, on the condition that I finish my uni degree after that. That was definitely a wrong move! That course made me fall even deeper in love with photography. I didn’t want to continue my uni, I wanted to continue my photography study at a more serious school in the US. My dad couldn’t really

FEATURES understand what happened with me. Why would I want to be a photographer in first place? Mind you, back then in the minds of the older Balinese people, a career in photography was akin to buying a polaroid, going to Tanah Lot, and offering to take tourists pictures with the Tanah Lot panorama in the background. I guess you could say it took me a while to convince him but he finally agreed. From that point onward, he put all of his effort into financing me, because in the end he decided it was important to think about what his son wanted for his own life, his own future. My dad always believed that school is an investment, he’d support it the best he could. So there I went, to Brooks Institute of Photography, in Santa Barbara, California. I was so lucky, I had the best dad. I came back to Bali in 1997. Photography wise, Bali wasn’t the best option, local photographers weren’t respected, so I went to Jakarta. I got in touch with my old friends, tried to get experience, tried to get into the real industry, learnt all the tricks, built my confidence. I did quite OK at the time. I even went for an assignment to Europe for a couple of months. But I guess, in my heart, I’m just a boy from a little tropical island and I couldn’t really stand the fast pace, big city dog-eat-dog, you-snooze-you-lose life of the metropolis. I went back to Bali. Things had changed a little bit, local photographers were already starting to make a little bit of money. I did the best I could to survive. I did small, infrequent, photography jobs here and there but, basically, for over a year I was really struggling. Then, one day, the owner of a massive spa company called looking for a low budget photographer for his wife’s restaurant campaign. He was so impressed by what I did that he ended up becoming my informal public relations guy, promoting me

to his colleagues. Word-of-mouth proved to be very effective. All of a sudden I became a very busy commercial photographer! And I got sucked seriously into commercial photography from that point on. Mostly tourism related and sometimes fashion as well. In fact, I remember taking propaganda pictures for your clothing line! How things have evolved for us! First, you were my “forced” experimental photography photo model, back in early 90s, and then, I became the photographer for your maximum rock-n-roll couture in late 2000! I remember watching you in the dark room, back in the 90s, when photography was still quite traditional. You were checking the photos using slides, and all of a sudden, boom, welcome to digital era! I consider myself lucky to have experienced both eras: celluloid and digital. From the celluloid era, I learned a lot about working carefully with location, making sure everything is in place and well set up. I even made sure to iron the bed sheets properly! Back then photography was a luxury thing. It was very expensive. For instance, sometimes, you had to send the film slides to Singapore to be processed. Because of this we had to be very careful, anticipate, be strategic, always ready with ‘Plan B’ so we didn’t waste too much money. The predigital era basically taught me to work efficiently and effectively. In the beginning, I didn’t really believe in digital photography. I’d bet my perspective on this is pretty much the same with most of the old school photographers. The instant factor makes quality questionable. But then I was introduced to this Fuji digital camera which blew my mind and made me transform my skepticism.

Today’s photography scene in Bali and the digital era is like the boom era of local photography. The digital technology has made it possible for everyone to be a photographer. Which is a good thing. Every person has the same chance to compete, to be the best. Because of this, today in Bali, when people need a photographer, they have many choices. The only bad thing I’ve seen the young photographers do, which is a different approach to mine, is that they choose to work more on Photoshop, manipulating things behind their computer, rather than, say, chasing the early morning sunrise. You can’t make a good photo if you don’t have a good source, that’s a very basic rule. Photoshop isn’t God. What’s your latest project? Any big plans? For the past 15 year I have pretty much done the same thing! I can’t really differentiate between which work is big or small anymore. Any work is big for me and I always put my heart on the line - put in maximum effort. But if you are asking about my dreams, well, I’ve always dreamt about doing an art photography exhibition about the history of Bali. In black and white. Traveling back in time. Whilst I’m sure my commercial photography background can be a bonus for this exhibition, I want it to be completely different with my commercial photography. This is a long term plan, but it’s in the making. Keep your fingers crossed. Any last nagging words? Learning photography is like learning a piano, you don’t get to play a whole song when you first start learning but when you practice, when your fingers become familiar with the keys, when you mastering the techniques, you’ll be able to play any song. www.beatmag.com

EDM?

Martin East (DJ): EDM is a marketing term to help all those Orange County dimwits who came to my gigs for years telling me I was playing queer music to have an access point to the music I have always loved. At the commercial end, it’s pop/hip hop guys jumping on a bandwagon and whipping those horses for every ounce of their lives to stay relevant.

On the deeper end, it’s spawned a beautiful spacious music of substance that has reached an audience it’s always deserved. Although this is just house and good midtempo to me. In other words.... EDM is a load of marketing hogwash that allows those marketing brands to co-opt a music they ignored for 25 years to seem new and fresh (at least to them). For me it’s like that new loud kid who comes to the bus stop and shouts “oooh the bus is coming! The bus is coming!” Well you know what, some of us been at the bus stop for a long time. And now the bus has come and that loud dude is on the top deck with his shirt and a whistle... Not sure I want to get on.

its someone that’s been around long enough to know who the Chemical Brothers are, then Chris is probably going to be right. But you know... the term of EDM is getting so big that even us old schoolers consider it a genre of its own these days. For me the meaning has changed... and become this more precise genre of mainly horrible sounding music and this other horrible type of music will Oded Peled (DJ): If its a 18 - 22 year old party girl be topping the charts. or boy then Stuart is right. If I could go on and on with this...

100

www.beatmag.com

Sylvie Beatrix (Organiser): It’s actually electronic dance music. Trance is not included in it because its not considered in the new EDM term. EDM is an acronym, abbreviation or slang word Oh, well actually even trance, house, electro is a part of it and all the others but it’s considered more as the new electronic dance music. It stands for all kind of electronic dance music! Again it’s mostly considered as that new music.

FEATURES Jack Ker (MC/Rapper): EDM stands for electronic dance music and is used mainly when describing dubstep, house, mash up, etc. but really all music that is club music produced by an artist is EDM. By the way I hate the usage of EDM. Why people have to put them all in the same category bothers me!

Leontien Kok (DJ): It definitely stands for all kinds of electronic music. The good and the bad stuff.

Stan Kreelekamp (DJ): EDM stands for electronic dance music, they say its a new genre. But its not, all dance music like house, trance, electro, techno, etc, is all EDM, its electronic music. Kids nowadays think it’s a new thing.

James Kaye (DJ): While most house purist scoff at the mere idea of EDM, I’m actually a big fan. Musically I find it devoid of anything creative or original but it’s existence has huge benefits for house DJs like myself. House has been floundering on the peripheries of commerciality for the past few years really lacking in any real direction, there have been one or two breakthrough tracks that have wound up on

Tony Montana (DJ): EDM is event driven marketing. Yeah, “electronic dance music” it’s the dumb American name for the new pop trance crap.

the iPods of hairdresser and secretaries but the reality is house is too musical, too ground breaking and altogether too cool to hit the mainstream. The advent of EDM has forced house back underground where it belongs, into nooks and crannies of most major cities once again allowing to grow and develop in smoky dark rooms as it did back in the very beginning. At Eatoss (a cool low capacity venue in Petitinget) we have a very strict policy, we only play house and hire international guest DJs who play house. If EDM hadn’t arrived with the popularity and drive that it has we wouldn’t be able to successfully do what we do. Is EDM a bad thing? Naaaah it’s just what the doctor ordered, all hail Avicii (Is that how you spell his name?)

James Labaueff (DJ): It’s all just bleeps and blurps to me...

A Retired secret Agents, Four grown men and a little tai chi... by: pande

This second half of July, we have two sequels and Keanu Reeves’ debut attempt at director. Hollywood seems to be obsessed with sequels, but we’d like to see them take a few more risks. You might want to visit a local DVD or check them out at the cinema (especially at the Beachwalk Premier theater), just check www.21cineplex.com!

RED 2 Action, Comedy, Crime. Director: Dean Parisot. Writer: Jon Hoeber (screenplay), Erich Hoeber (screenplay), Warren Ellis (characters), Cully Hamner (characters). Cast: Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anthony Hopkins, Lee Byunghun, Helen Mirren.

The whole crew from the original are back in this action comedy. With Frank (Bruce Willis) trying to live a normal life with Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), things get predictably action packed when someone tries to kill them. Bring on all the old spies. With an ensemble cast that includes John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anthony Hopkins, and Helen Mirren, expect well crafted characters, incredulous back stories and light action. This film will more than likely have something for everyone.

Grown Ups 2 Comedy. Director: Dennis Dugan. Writer: Fred Wolf, Adam Sandler, Tim Herlihy. Cast: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello.

The movie begins with Lenny (Adam Sandler) and his friends going back to their hometown with their wives and children. The first morning there, Lenny and Roxanne (Salma Hayek) are awakened and shocked to see a deer inexplicably inside their bedroom. Apparently, it doesn’t get any better from there. Expect your usual PG humour in this film which was almost universally panned by critics (like the origianl film). We’re not excited by this one at all, but if you want to, go check it out.

Man of Tai Chi Action. Director: Keanu Reeves. Writer: Michael G. Cooney. Cast: Keanu Reeves, Tiger Chen, Karen Mok, Iko Uwais.

A delivery man in Beijing named Tiger Chen who is a Tai Chi practitioner cannot resist the temptation to work for a multinational security services operator, Donaka Mak (Keanu Reeves) only to find the job actually being illegal fights with big bucks for the survivors of the ‘game of death’. Being in such a conundrum, Tiger accepts the deal in order to rebuild his Tai Chi guru’s temple in a far-flung region of China. This is Reeves’ directorial debut, and despite the lack of plot at some points; the film ambitiously portrays the psychological conflict the protagonist faces in today’s modern China, that every martial arts aficionado will have a big interest in.

CD REVIEW

editors

the weight of your love Channeling the spirit of Joy Division and the visuals of Kraftwerk, Editors took their rightful place among the cream of the late 2000s new wave revivalists (you know, the ones that are so cool they don’t even need a ‘The’) with their first two albums The Back Room (2005) and An End Has a Start (2007). Peppered with darkly anthemic yet often exhilarating northern hymns, both albums received critical acclaim and turned the Brummy quartet into a stadium favourite. Worthless

www.beatmag.com

While 2009’s In This Light and on This Evening did throw up a couple of gems (“Papillion”, “Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool”) on the whole it was too far removed from their SOP, with skewed synths replacing guitars and any semblance of melody all too often left out in the clamour to try something more experimental and raw. So have they come back to their senses on album number four? In short, not really. The amicable departure of guitarist Chris Urbanowicz has certainly left a dent, and the upshot is a tangent of more simplistic, straight up guitar driven new wave rock ballads. Thematically it’s pretty much doom and gloom business as usual, although as the title would suggest the angst here comes not from mortality but the equally destructive and dark qualities of modern love; “I promised myself/I wouldn’t talk about death” sings Tom Smith in that distinctive baritone, asking instead, in a less distinctive falsetto, “What is this thing called love?/we’re out of it”. The line “Every move you make, breaks me, breaks me” is similarly telling of the caustic side of l’amore. The album’s critics (and there seem to be a lot out there) who presumably grew up with Simple Minds and Echo and the Bunnymen on their walkmans will tut-tut at the extensive pillaging of mid 80s new wave rock contained therein, and let’s be honest, Smith & co. are not breaking new ground here – all that’s missing from lead single “A Ton of Love” is 1987 Bono in a cowboy hat. However, while it’s not up there with the first two LPs, it is a much more structured and accessible effort than In This Light… The genuinely stirring strings of “Nothing” and funky fuzz bass line of “Sugar” remind us of Editors of old, and I doubt anyone has ever sung the word “Formaldehyde” with such heart-wrenching eloquence. A step sideways admittedly, The Weight of Your Love doesn’t push Editors into any new territory, but ultimately its all the more accessible for that very reason. Dan Ashcroft is out of lunch.

GIZMOS LUXI

KONSTRUKTOR DIY SLR CAMERA

Leave the light meter or the hundreds of dollars you were going to spend on one at home. There’s a cheaper way for DSLR photographers, and it’s called Luxi. Luxi is a light diffusion dome that you’ll slip over the front-facing camera of an iPhone. When you fire up a light meter app that works with the device, you’ll get information on how much light is striking the subject being focused on. That will tell photographers how much they need to spin those wheels and twist those knobs to get their shutter, aperture, ISO, and other settings just right, so they don’t end up with an over-exposed wash or an underexposed grey blob. www.esdevices.com $24.95

Slighter USB Rechargeable Electric Lighter There are so many books and movies out there now discussing a world ending apocalypse of some sort or another. Maybe it will be a zombie uprising, the Northern Hemisphere will freeze over with glaciers, a 21st century plague will wipe out most of civilization, or all of the electricity will turn off! When that happens you want to be able to start a few fires? Rubbing sticks together may work for some people, but who wouldn’t rather have a lighter? This lighter has enough power for 100+ lights, but uses no gas or butane. With its weather proof design, you can start a fire on that glacier we were talking about. It recharges via USB though, so if electricity goes out, get yourself a solar rechargeable battery first! www.thinkgeek.com $19.99

It seems as though everyone is a photographer these days, but not everyone has built their own camera. It’s time for you to change that with the Konstruktor DIY SLR Camera by Lomography. Much more fulfilling than mindlessly thumbing a retro filter on the latest camera app and no need to add a zillion hashtags to every photo (you know who you are). The kit contains everything you need to create and personalise your own 35mm film SLR camera, a bit like a model aeroplane kit, including sticky backed leather patches and a vinyl sticker sheet to truly make the Konstruktor your own. The instructions are miles clearer than a Scandinavian furniture manual and within one to two hours you will have built something worth building without any swearing, wonky shelves or nails stuck in your arm. www.firebox.com £34.99

The Automatic Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker This ice cream maker produces 1 1/2 quarts of soft serve ice cream, yogurt, sorbet, or sherbet in 35 minutes without the need for chemicals, salt, or ice, and allows you to mix your own toppings from three separate hoppers that automatically dispense nuts, cookie crumbles, and sprinkles through a funnel directly into a tube of frozen confection as it falls into a waiting bowl at the push of a button. The unit operates from a single switch, and its double-insulated freezer bowl holds its temperature (requires 12 hours of freezing prior) while mixing all the ingredients needed to make any of the products; a single lever dispenses soft-serve (harder ice cream must be removed from the freezer bowl). All parts remove easily for cleaning, and the device holds a stack of flat or sugar cones. www.hammacher.com

Its 35-lumen LED produces 6” to 60” diagonal images from 8” to 78” away with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The projector’s 640 x 480 pixel resolution ensures a sharp view, a manual focus wheel fine-tunes image clarity, and the iPad’s speakers control the sound. With a free app, users can magnify or rotate images and project everything from YouTube videos to live Internet surfing sessions. The internal lithium-polymer battery provides two hours of projection and recharges via USB with the included cable. Also functions as a backup battery for an iPhone. LED is rated for 20,000 hours. The camcorder shoots high-speed video at up to 600 frames-per-second, a 900% higher frame rate than typical camcorders, and plays back super slow motion video that’s ideal for dissecting the nuances of a baseball pitcher’s mechanics or a golfer’s swing. The touch of a button allows users to quickly switch from a wide shooting angle that captures the full field of play to a close up that shows a goal being scored. The camcorder has a back-illuminated 1/2.3” 12.8 megapixel CMOS image sensor and a wide angle F1.2 lens, 10X optical zoom, optical image stabilization, and it records 1920 x 1080p high-definition video at 60 fps. www.hammacher.com $1,200

Choose from one of four natural massage oils from the Natursea brand, including cempaka, sandalwood, ylang-ylang and lavender. Elsewhere, you will find a mix of all natural ingredients such as coffee, tamarind, green tea and raw chocolate incorporated into many of the treatments and scrubs. Natural aloe vera oil, also from Natursea, is used to invigorate tired eyes and dull skin during H’Spa’s super refreshing facials.

Magic:

With a no-nonsense and unpretentious approach to wellbeing, H’Spa offers nine menu treatments and four signature packages, meaning a highly accessible experience for the casual spa user. For those carrying deep rooted aches and tight muscles, check out the deep tissue massage (200k++/275k++ 60/90 mins). Beginning with a cleansing sea salt footbath, the all-over treatment aims to iron out all the knots and leave you feeling on top of the world. Finish off with a spell in H’Spa sauna to sweat out those toxins and get your skin tingling.

RIP CURL CUP 2013

On High Alert For Big Monday Swell The 2013 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang has gone on “High Alert” for the first time in the waiting period. A large Indian Ocean swell was forecast to hit Bali on Sunday, July 28 had competitors and contest directors flirting with the idea of running of the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest. While the weekend’s impending swell is the largest swell so far to flare up during the event’s six-week waiting period (July 1 – August 15), contest officials stress that it is still highly unlikely it will be consistent enough to run the ten-year anniversary of the Rip Curl Cup. “This storm is unusual,” said Magic Seaweed Head Forecaster Ben Freeston. “It’s small and relatively weak, but so close by comparison to a typical winter season Indo swell that it’ll arrive at a size that’s right on the edge of the standard set by previous competition. It’s proximity made an early call tricky, but it also means this swell will arrive and leave far more quickly than a normal southern ocean winter blast, offering some great surf but over a very limited window either side of an overnight peak.”

swell. Flights have been booked, cars are packed and ready to go on a swell hunt, and plenty of insane freesurfing will still go down at Padang Padang even if conditions aren’t consistent enough to run the tenyear anniversary of the ultimate tuberiding contest. Stay tuned to live.ripcurl.com for the latest contest call, including a live global webcast if the contest is given the green light, and complete coverage of the freesurfing and swell hunting in Indo by all the invited surfers if the contest remains on standby. Heat 1: Christian Fletcher (USA), Dylan Longbottom (Australia), Pepen Hendrik (Bali), Lee Wilson (Bali). Heat 2: Usman Trioko (Lombok), Alik Rudiarta (Bali), Luke Hynd (Australia), Kevin Bourez (Tahiti). Heat 3: Mega Semadhi (Bali), Betet Merta (Bali), Kekoa Bacalso (Hawaii), *Mystery Wildcard. Heat 4: Wayan Gobleg (Bali), Mustofa Jeksen (Bali), Anthony Walsh (Australia), Bruno Santos (Brazil). Heat 5: Made Lana (Bali), Dede Suryana (Java), Jamie O’Brien (Hawaii), Ry Craike (Australia). Heat 6: Rizal Tandjung (Bali), Bol Adi Putra (Bali), Chris Ward (USA), Jack Robinson (Australia). Heat 7: Raditya Rondi (Bali), Rahtu Suargita (Bali), Laurie Towner (Australia), Mark Occhilupo (Australia). Heat 8: Garut Widiarta (Bali), Marlon Gerber (Bali), Jacob Willcox (Australia), Sean Peggs (NZ). Watch It LIVE! ED. The swell didn’t produce much and the organisers are still waiting for the appropriate sized swell to run the competition. They have until August 15.

Many of the 32 invited surfers – 16 of Indonesia’s best and 16 of the world’s top tube riders – are already in Bali waiting to catch this swell. The rest, including defending champion Chris Ward (USA), Kekoa Bacalso (Hawaii), Jacob Willcox (Australia) and more will be descending on Bali this week to take advantage of this promising swell. Many of the surfers in the contest have made alternate plans in the event the contest doesn’t run on this www.beatmag.com

Two separate peaks now in Jakarta’s shopping calendar

A

nyone who has been in Indonesia for a number of years will have realised that the difference in year length between the Gregorian (Western) and Muslim calendars means that the holy month of Ramadan plus the Idul Fitri holiday immediately afterwards occur about 10 days ‘earlier’ each year when measured by the Gregorian calendar. Ramadan once fell around the end of the year; it runs from early July to early August this year, while next year it will run from late June to late July. This means that the year’s two major shopping seasons, Ramadan and Christmas/New Year, which once overlapped, are now clearly separated by almost six months, creating two distinct peaks in the shopping calendar. The Jakarta Great Sale Festival, held to celebrate the anniversary of the capital city’s founding on June 22 (but also timed to coincide with the school holidays) ended in mid-July and was reckoned by its organizers a commercial success. Indeed, they are talking about the possibility of a Java-wide event next year. Whatever happens, the Great Sale and intense shopping during Ramadan that always occurs in the run-up to Idul Fitri will almost coincide, so the mid-year shopping peak could be a record-breaking event in 2014. Back in the present and on the ground, two new retail kids on the block illustrate the vibrancy and range of the capital’s contemporary shopping scene. Upmarket, Paris-based emporium Galeries Lafayette, with its stock a veritable roll call of topnotch brand names from the apparel and fragrance worlds, had its grand opening on June 13 after a

soft opening a month earlier, and now occupies pride of place at Pacific Place mall. Barely more than a stone’s throw away, Korean-based Lotte Shopping Avenue had its grand opening just over a week later in phase 1 of the Ciputra World complex on Jl. Dr Satrio, Kuningan, a superblock that will contain a hotel, apartments, offices, a concert hall and a museum, as well as a major new shopping mall. Unfortunately, the new Casablanca-Tanah Abang overpass, designed to relieve traffic in this area, has still not opened, so traffic congestion in the immediate vicinity is as bad as ever for the time being. As Lotte is a key partner in running the mall, Jakarta shoppers will find it has a distinctly Korean ambience, with images and other reminders of K-pop idols on display, plus brand names from the nation that might not yet be familiar. Japanese casual apparel retailer Uniqlo is also a prominent tenant here, having opened its first store in Indonesia. Don’t worry though: The old (and ubiquitous) favourites like Ranch Market, Periplus bookstore, Starbucks cafe and Cinema XXI are also present, too. A novel feature at the mall is Lotte’s downtown duty-free store, where shoppers due to travel overseas simply show their passport and e-ticket to qualify them for duty-free purchases of a range of designer-label products without having to keep an eye on the clock. The goods are then collected just before departure at Lotte’s Soekarno-Hatta store in the international terminal. The goods now on offer at new and existing shops around the city are, of course, presented as temptingly as ever. Many will now be able to enjoy the thrill of the chase twice over as they seek genuine bargains at this year’s peak shopping periods. (Jim Read)
