There’s no denying it, Jakarta can be a tough place. I’ve had the recurring scene lately of jumping into cabs and getting caught up in conversations with the driver and then them asking me if I can give them a job, any job. They end up explaining in nitty gritty details of how difficult it is to make a living nowadays. Really tough stuff. Wish I could help. A few times they’ve started up about their American friend or something that only calls them and gives them 50k no matter where they go. Nice to have good friends. Then there’s the good looking lady late in some bar where you’ve already had a skin full and couldn’t imagine anyone being interested, and them offering themselves - at a tidy sum. Can’t they find a full time bloke to take care of them anymore? It’s surely a tough place at times and you’ve got to keep your wits about you. I saw the article last week in the Jak Post about the ever growing numbers of foreigners coming to live and work in Jakarta. As a friend said to me recently, it’s almost at pre-monetary crisis levels. Sometimes you are in a bar and you would swear you were in Singapore or even Hong Kong, there are so many bules around this place at the moment. Well, that can’t be a bad thing, can it? That’s what we are here for, to guide them and you thru this the main and back streets of this fine city, so let’s get it on! In this edition we have a chat with John Digweed, who was here a couple of weeks ago, and in passing a quick hello to Gareth Emery who was over at the newly re-named Voyeur Club at Illigals in Kota. There’s plenty more inside, including all the gigs over the past two weeks, the gigs that are coming in the next two weeks and all the info you need to get around this big, and sometimes ugly town with all its glory and problems that we call home, and don’t you just love it? For fans of Korean Pop music and top boy bands, prepare yourself to see the very popular, B2st or better known as Beast. This boy band from South Korea was formed in 2009 and consists of six boys, Yoon Doo-joon, Jang Hyun-seung, Yong Jun-hyung, Yang Yo-seob, Lee Gikwang and Son Dong-woon. Solid proof of their recent success was receiving an award from the Seoul Music Awards and winning a Melon Music Award in 2011 for Artist of the Year. The band will perform a concert called B2st Beautiful Show, as part of their world tour series at Jitec, Mangga Dua Square on Saturday March 17 at 8pm.
Chaseiro Chaseiro is one of Indonesia’s music legends which was formed in the late 70s. The group that has jazz, bossanova and pop influences, got its Latino name from the members names: Chandra, Helmi, Aswin, Edwin, Irwan, Rizali and Omen. They released their first album called Pemuda in 1979. Since then, they have continued to make music through their albums Bila, Vol.3, Ceria, Persembahan, and the most recent, Retro, which was released in 2011. On March 16, Chaseiro will perform in the event called ‘Chaseiro, Music & Friends’ at The Hall, Senayan City. The concert will be hosted by MC Bens Leo and Ida Arimurti, and there will also be entertainment by New Spirit Band, Andien, Lala Suwages, Iwa K, Riza Arshad and other musicians.

Earth, Wind & Fire Do you still remember hits like “After The Love Has Gone”, “September”, and “Boogie Wonderland?” The American group called Earth, Wind & Fire was born in 1971. They’re from Chicago and were founded by Maurice White. The legendary band plays soul, R&B, funk, jazz fusion, and rock music. The group’s success can be seen from their six Grammys and four American Music Awards under their belt. They were even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. For their 40th anniversary, this group will be back with part of their original formation; Maurice White, Verdine White and Philip Bailey and will do their world tour. One of the places on their tour list is Jakarta. They will perform at Stadion Tennis Indoor Senayan on March 28. Are you ready for some massive funk? After the success of last year’s Global Battle of the Bands that sent Gugun Blues Shelter to the world stage of Hyde Park London as the Indonesian representative, it’s now time to get your boogie on as the 2012 series is now upon us. The competition started with the first qualification round, held at Hard Rock Café Jakarta on February 27 with performances from Poetic Island, Snickers & The Chicken Fighter, Horny Fever, and Scream Monster of Blood, and the second qualification round was held on March 5 with FOS, Rockeveler, Buronan Mertua and The Cadenzza. On the third and last qualification round, there will be 11.12 Band, Dave McOpus, Lord Symphony and The Painkillers. Not all can win, but they all can certainly rock.

Hard Rock Rising Global Battle Of The Bands 2012
REDMA 2011 REDMA or Ravelex Electronic Dance Music Awards is a special award for Indonesian Electronic Dance Music acts. The event which was started in 2006, is back with a new format. In the sixth edition, the DJ Of The Year concept has now been replaced with an Indonesian Top 50, where the rank will be counted by quality, activity and the DJs continuity which will be selected by voters. Besides that, there will be awards for VJs, MCs, producers and also clubs. The awards ceremony night will be held on March 11 at Otel Lobby, Epicentrum, Kuningan. There will be performances by local and international DJs, VJs, and live PAs within the festivities.
Formed in Nantes, France, Smooth are David Darricarrère, Nicolas Berrivin and Christophe Declercq. With three albums already released, this trio plays pop, electro and soul. They have performed in many festivals in Nice, Montréal, Italy, Hungary, Belgium and many more places including 16 countries in Europe, South America, Latin America and North America. Their music has been used several times for the soundtrack of French movies, including a movie produced by famous French director, Luc Besson. Their closest project is the Asian tour to promote their third album “The Parade”. They will perform at Rooftop Salihara on April 3 at 8.30pm.

ampoerna A, who are always supporting Indonesian music, continue their WANTED program this year, a program that is held to discover new, talented bands and to create the new ‘stars’. Entering its fifth year, the program is held in 30 areas around Indonesia.
WANTED
has been going for four years since 2007, and has helped to launch well known musicians in this country. For example D’Masiv and Geisha became big hits after competing in this competition. WANTED will be held from March 1 – May 1, 2012 for the CD Submission process, and there will be 30 areas all over Indonesia. Sampoerna A invites new talented bands in Indonesia to send their best works in accordance with the Go Ahead spirit. WANTED this year has series of training and skills activities that new talented bands can use to be ready to get into Indonesia music industry.
The series of WANTED activities are: WANTED Sharing Session – An event to share information and experience about the music industry. WANTED Submission – The submission of live CD demo of the talented bands to the Drop Box Zone in 30 areas and PO Box 10.000.
CD Selection – Thousands of CDs will be selected into the 10 best bands from 10 regions by the panel of judges in Jakarta. Regional Selection - 100 semi-finalists will compete in each region. There will be a Coaching Clinic, and the 10 band finalists will join the WANTED Camp in Jakarta. WANTED Camp – An intensive 5 day program to prepare 10 band finalists so they will be ready to jump into the music industry. WANTED Final Selection – The finalists will get a chance to perform in the series of Road To Soundrenaline event. The winner of WANTED 2012 will be announced three days before Soundrenaline. WANTED Roadshow – The winner will join the road show to selected cities. With a tagline of ‘We Spot Your Talent’ at the forefront of the WANTED event, Sampoerna A is always wanting to participate actively in finding and developing new talent in the music industry through the search of talented unsigned bands in all regions of Indonesia.

Big Brother pernah tampil di Barcode, Shy Rooftop, Buddha Bar, acara Kick andy di salah satu stasiun TV nasional, Brew House, The Shelter, Marley’s, Rolling Stone Café dan mereka juga sempat beberapa kali berkolaborasi dengan musisi seperti Bagus Netral dan Ras Muhammad. Jenis musik yang mereka mainkan adalah Alternative, Rock n Roll, Pop, dan membawakan hits milik band ternama seperti The Beatles, The Police, Cold Play, Radio Head hingga Bob Marley. Big Brother is a combination of two bands, Pasukan Lima Jari and Unicorn. They’re still keeping busy performing all over Jakarta and now they’re even getting busier because they’ve become Aperitivo’s home band. They will perform every Wednesday and on March 7, Ferdinand, Martin, Agiel and Damar will play acoustic in the launching of Aperitivo’s weekly events.

Tritonal adalah duo yang terdiri dari Chad Cisneros dan Dave Reed dan keduanya bertemu secara online saat Chad sedang mengerjakan beberapa remix untuk perusahaan rekaman ternama seperti AVA Recordings, Armada, Lost Language dan Alter Ego. Karena persamaan ide, membuat mereka bergabung dan tahun 2007, duo Chad dan Dave yang bernama Tritonal ini, sudah masuk ke pentas musik dunia. Hits pertama mereka yang berjudul Piercing Quiet, merupakan track yang terbanyak dipilih dari ribuan pendengar acara radio A State Of Trance kepunyaan Armin Van Buuren. Innerlight adalah nama panggung dari seorang musisi bernama Eddie Triana yang kini mengarungi dunia dance music. Lulusan universitas Gajah Mada yang mengawali karirnya di kota Jogja ini, masuk ke industri musik sebagai gitaris dan membentuk Tiga Band pada tahun 1997 dan sempat meluncurkan album. Tahun 2001, Eddie terlibat sebagai penulis lagu, gitaris, programmer dan juga composer dalam pembuatan album penyanyi Syahrini. Lanjut ke tahun 2003, Eddie menghadirkan proyek baru yang bernama Recycle Bin dengan music yang lebih electronica. Mulai masuk ke genre dance music, Eddie membuat sejarah pada tahun 2005 dengan meluncurkan CD Monster Series 001 di London, kompilasi CD dengan music Trance dan setelah itu juga terbit album berjudul “Take Me To The Blue Blue Sky”. Tahun 2006, Eddie mencetak prestasi dengan menjuarai Heineken Thirst Studio dan berhak mendampingi produser dunia yaitu BT dalam menciptakan track dan tampil bersama. Innerlight is the stage name of musician Eddie Triana for his dance music gigs. He graduated from Gajah Mada University and started his career in Jogja, entering the music scene as a guitar player and formed Tiga Band in 1997 with which he released an album. In 2001, Eddie got involved in the making of singer Syahrini’s album as a songwriter, guitarist, programmer and composer. In 2003, Eddie presented a new project called Recycle Bin which was focussed on electronic music. He began to make dance music in 2005 with the release of Monster Series 001, a trance music CD compilation, in London and after that he released an album called “Take Me To The Blue Blue Sky”. In 2006, Eddie won a Heineken Thirst Studio award and got to work with an international producer, BT, in creating tracks and performing together.

Most clubs were keen to have him as their resident DJ. Jockey, who has been nicknamed Dr. Beat, won first place in the Indonesian DJ Festival in 1986 and Asean DJ Festival in 1987. His compilation mix collection was recorded in the era of cassette tape until the era of laptops.

Max lahir di London namun sempat berpindah tinggal di Spanyol, Amerika dan akhirnya bermukim di Ottawa. Pada saat usianya 15 tahun, Max mulai belajar sebagai DJ hip hop dan scratch DJ sebelum terjun ke dance music pada tahun 1992. Satu track karyanya yang berjudul ‘Airtight’, dinominasikan untuk Juno award tahun 2001 dan berlanjut ke kompilasi mix ‘Tranceport #4’ yang juga meraih kesuksesan. Namanya pun masuk dalam peringkat 23 DJ Mag, dan musiknya yang mencampur antara progressive, techno, disco dan trance, dibumbui oleh elemen bass, rhythm dan melodi yang sangat enerjik di setiap setnya. Satu remix yang semakin membuat namanya meroket adalah ‘Owner of A lonely Heart’ di tahun 2005 dan kompilasi album mix terkini adalah Cycles3 yang rilis tahun 2011 lalu. Dari berbagai klab yang disinggahinya, Max pernah tampil di Jakarta beberapa tahun silam. Born in London but raised in Canada, Max Graham is well known in the Canadian and International dance scenes. He was brought up in England, Spain and the US mixing it up with graffiti artists, skateboarders and eventually turntablists. His progressive trance classic “Airtight” (2001) was a huge worldwide hit which was nominated for a “Juno” award in Canada. His monster 80’s remix hit “Owner of a Lonely Heart” (2005) and his diverse artist album Radio (2010) along with other tracks like “Crank” and “I Know You’re Gone” got him a lot of rotation in the clubs.
Kesibukan Max yang terbaru adalah baru menyelesaikan track yang masuk dalam kompilasi ASOT 2012 dan mengurus perusahaan rekaman miliknya yang bernama ShineMusic dan Re*brand. Max juga sibuk dengan tur dunianya yang dimulai sejak bulan Februari hingga Juni, dan salah satu Negara yang akan disinggahinya adalah Indonesia. Max Graham akan tampil di Illigals club pada tanggal 16 Maret. This disc spinner/producer has never stuck to a single style of easily marketable music but prefers to follow his own path of discovering and creating great tracks from so many different genres. At one of his sets you’ll hear house, trance, progressive and even techno but if you let go and trust this master DJ you’ll have the night of your life. Max will perform at Illigals club on March 16.

Formed in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, by a bunch of 13-year-olds, the Friendly Fires were initially called First Day Back. They primarily played cover songs by Green Day and other rock bands. After university the band started calling themselves the Friendly Fires and they consider their greatest influences to be German techno label Kompakt, Carl Craig and Prince.

In 2007, they made a television appearance on a Channel 4 show called Transmission. Their single “Paris” made it to the Guardian’s Single of the Week. In 2008, the song “On Board” played in the North American television commercial for the Nintendo Wii Fit. Subsequent tracks appeared in numerous video games, television episodes and opening scores. Their eponymous LP was certified double gold in the UK.

The entertainment for that night started with performance by Bubugiri, a duo that consist of Bubu on vocals and Giri on guitar that played some love songs accoustically. Program yang khusus mengedepankan musik Raw Jackin Chicago House ini, mencoba menghadirkan music Jazz & Swing tahun 1920 yang dicampur dengan house music. DJ yang bergiliran tampil adalah DJ Oki Koro, Dirga Ara, Agiel Mahisa, Reza Ecilo dan resident DJ Leno Rei. Animo pendengar musik ini cukup tinggi, dan itu terlihat dari jumlah pengunjung yang lumayan meramaikan Capocaccia malam itu. Another ‘Don’t Panic!’ party was held at Capocaccia with a special edition of G-Swing. Although there weren’t too many towels at the party, this Raw Jackin Chicago House music program presented 20s jazz and swing that was blended with house music. The DJs that performed that night were DJ Oki Koro, Dirga Ara, Agiel Mahisa, Reza Ecilo and resident DJ Leno Rei. People reacted well to the event which was mirrored by the full capacity crowd.

Malam itu, sederetan DJ lokal ikut meramaikan acara, yaitu dimulai dari DJ Heru dan Dade yang tampil sebagai pembuka, sambil ditemani oleh MC D dan LJ Ovie. Selepas tengah malam, duo Gold Puma yang terdiri dari DJ Micko dan Dmust Akira, mengisi dek dan menggulirkan electronic music yang mereka mainkan dalam satu set. Micko yang punya pengalaman bermain di klab dan Dmust yang sempat beberapa kali dinominasikan sebagai produser terbaik, terlihat sangat padu memainkan musiknya. Keren!

Tepat tengah malam, langsung saja Harry Choo Choo Romero mengisi dek dan menggulirkan track electronica dan house dalam set yang dikemasnya. DJ, produser sekaligus pemilik perusahaan rekaman bernama Bambossa yang pernah menyabet penghargaan sebagai Remixer of The Year versi Muzik Magazine ini, langsung disambut oleh pengunjung yang meramaikan Immigrant. Great party!
The “Housemate� programs at Immigrant always presents high quality DJs, either from here or abroad. On February 17, it was time for New Yorker Harry Choo Choo Romero to be that high quality DJ. Resident DJ Ical warmed up the show with a blend of house and at midnight, Harry Choo Choo Romero took over and hit play on electronic and house tracks. The Remixer of The Year from Muzik Magazine definitely got the crowd going at a very packed Immigrant. Great party!

For dance music lovers all over the world, and especially in Indonesia, John Digweed could be referred to as a household name. The legend who has visited Jakarta a few times already was back to perform at Stadium for the first time. Fans have been waiting quite a while to see Digweed play in a super club like Stadium. Digweed started his set slowly and the Stadium underground atmosphere, along with some cool visuals and laser lights supporting the show, made it spectacular. When morning came, the place was getting more packed. Digweed’s three hour set really impressed his fans and most kept the party going till late or early... depending on your perspective.

entas musik Indonesia kembali kedatangan musisi internasional. You Me At Six, band beraliran Brit rock, pop punk asal Inggris tampil dalam rangka tur Indonesia di Lapangan Parkir Selatan Senayan. Hari Sabtu malam, fans yang terdiri dari kaum muda, mulai berkumpul di bagian depan panggung menunggu sang idola tampil. Sekitar pukul 9 malam, Josh, Max, Chris, Matt dan Joe langsung muncul ke atas panggung dan membuka konser dengan lagu ‘The Consequence’ yang diambil dari album pertamanya yang berjudul Hold Me Down. Setelah itu mereka menggulirkan ‘Loverboy’, ‘Playing The Blame Game’, ‘Trophy Eyes’, ‘Take Off Your Colours’, ‘The Dillema’, dari ketiga album mereka yang disambut koor bersama dengan para fansnya. Konser pun ditutup oleh lagu ‘Stay With Me’, ‘Bite My Tongue’ dan ‘Underdog’.

You Me At Six, a Brit rock, pop punk band that hails from England performed in a concert at Lapangan Parkir Selatan Senayan as a part of their tour of Indonesia. On Saturday night, fans that were mostly teenagers were gathered in the front part of the stage, waiting for the boys to begin the show. At 9 pm, Josh, Max, Chris, Matt and Joe got on the stage and started their performance with the song ‘The Consequence’ that is taken from their first album called Hold Me Down. After that they also played ‘Loverboy’, ‘Playing The Blame Game’, ‘Trophy Eyes’, ‘Take Off Your Colours’, ‘The Dilemma’, from their three albums and a bunch of others. The concert was finished with the songs ‘Stay With Me’, ‘Bite My Tongue’ and ‘Underdog’.

Glam Rockafellas #2 etelah sukses menggelar acara Glam Rockafellas sebelumnya, LUV’s Bar & Dine kembali menghadirkan edisi keduanya pada tanggal 22 Februari lalu. Semua pengisi acaranya spesial, dari mulai DJ Rienov dari Hard Spinn, lalu ada kolaborasi antara DJ Arien Cathrine dengan Vicky Nitinegoro yang memainkan gitar. Pengunjung yang meramaikan LUV, juga dihibur oleh fashion parade dari LV C&C models yang mengambil tema Glam Rock kreasi dari desainer Audhitz. Puncak acaranya, DJ Winky yang mengambil kendali dengan menggulirkan musik progressive, breakbeat yang disambut dengan keriuhan para tamu dan barteder pun tidak mau ketinggalan meramaikan acara, dengan menampilkan Bar Flair. Sampai berjumpa di Glam Rockafellas seri ketiga.
After finding success with the previous Glam Rockafellas event, LUV’s Bar & Dine came back with a sequel. All of the performers were pretty darn talented which included DJ Rienov from Hard Spinn and a collaboration between DJ Arien Cathrine with Vicky Nitinegoro who played guitar. The crowd also got to enjoy a fashion parade which featured Glam Rock by Audhitz and was modeled by LV C&C models. The climax of the show was when DJ Winky took the helm and played progressive, breakbeat music which resulted in tremendous crowd satisfaction. There was also a bar flair show by the bartender. n the vast land of Jakarta nightlife, it appears there might just be a new powerhouse in town, going by the name of The Voyeur at Illigals. They’re now steadily bringing in some serious international talent and giving Jakarta a true taste of great dance music. With Gareth Emery gracing the decks in February, followed by the American trance duo Tritonal, as well as big time Canadian Dj Max Graham in March, they’re packing quite a punch and booking talent from all ends of the globe. The club itself has an interesting layout, complimented by solid lights and powerful sound. The vibe is that of a true club, with music being the main focal point. A bit different than some of the now seemingly typical places in Jakarta, which are first about bottles, tables, and boasting a posh image.

Just minutes before, in a press conference upstairs, he told The Beat how much he enjoyed playing in Indonesia and that since his first time coming here in 2010, it has been a warm welcome every time. He commented Jakarta as being one of the top places to play in all of Asia and stated that although he only gets to perform here once a year or so, it’s something he always looks forward to. When asked about what he envisions in the coming year, he proudly told us of his new artist album being released in 2012, of which the first single “Concrete Angel” was just unleashed on Feb. 13th. It’s already received quite a lot of praise from around the trance

We were able to be a part of the fantastic vibe that night, and as Gareth took the stage and began his set, the place erupted with screams and chants. He then got on the mic himself, dropping a nice “what’s up Jakarta!”, and inquiring how we had all been.

Gareth didn’t waste any time at all dropping his new smash hit on all of us there at The Voyeur, mixing it in about four or five tracks deep. With it being such a new song, it was awesome seeing many of the partygoers singing along. He was very active and lively behind the decks, engaging the crowd and embracing their friendly, inviting nature. He also informed The Beat that his new album will consist of a lot of his own solo work done in the studio, as well as some collaborations with artists not typically associated with dance music. Christina Novelli for instance, who performs the vocals in Concrete Angel, actually has a background in Rock. If Gareth’s musical passion and talent is any indication of what’s to come in the new album, it’s surely something to look out for this year. And, if The Voyeur’s recent efforts at bringing great dance music to Jakarta and decorating its nightlife with some international flavor are any indication of what they have planned for 2012, it will be a place you won’t want to miss out on.

Yes, the crowd had gathered, dancing shoes, suspenders, shirts, fedoras and wavin the Red, Green and Yellow flag, the buzz and excitement was unbelievable. Sabtu Dansa was finally in session and over six thousand people showed up to brighten and lighten, dance and prance the night away. The showmanship and skill of these musicians were brilliantly complemented by the singing and dancing of the crowd, who religiously sang their hearts out to tunes of old and new.

The awards bestowed annually by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – that’s the Oscars to you and me – have been presented, with few surprises this time around. The Artist, a paean to the earliest days of Hollywood silent movies, tied at five each with Hugo, a 3D adventure drama, for the greatest trawl of awards. Tellingly though, The Artist, filmed in black-and-white, and almost completely silent, won in the artistic categories including Best Picture, Director and Male Actor while Hugo was awarded mainly in technical categories. The Artist is a delightful, engaging film that is, paradoxically, daringly innovative in the way it adapts the techniques of early filmmaking to create a modern-day homage to a bygone age. It also breaks one of the unwritten rules of showbusiness (“never work with children or animals,” for they will steal the show) by featuring Uggie, a Jack Russell terrier, as one of the main characters. Uggie is indeed adorable, but ultimately he complements rather than hijacks the action. Above all, the recognition bestowed on The Artist demonstrates very clearly that Academy members focus mainly on filmmaking craft rather than mere popularity as measured by box-office takings. One of the most commercially successful films during the last 12 months (and the most profitable film franchise ever) has been the final episode in the Harry Potter series. Yet Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2) was nominated in only three categories – all of them technical – and did not win in any.
In the Best Actress category, the majority of pundits seemed to think that Viola Davis would win for her highly engaging role as a maid in American civil rights-themed movie The Help. In the end the award went to Meryl Streep’s outstanding portrayal of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in biopic The Iron Lady. With Michelle Williams also nominated for her acclaimed portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, Best Actress was always going to be a tough call. Many film enthusiasts would agree, though, that it was probably high time Streep won: She has been nominated 17 times for an Oscar and won three but it has been 30 years since her last success. Similarly, the award of Best Supporting Actor to Christopher Plummer for his role in Beginners – his first Oscar, at the age of 82 – shows just how tough the competition can be, particularly in the acting categories. In the 84 years of the annual awards many highly regarded actors never won the coveted statuette – Richard Burton, Orson Welles and Greta Garbo, to name just a few. As this year’s Best Picture award was being received, it fell to Uggie to capture the essence of on-screen performance. While producer Thomas Langmann and director Michel Hazanavicius were making their acceptance speeches, Uggie, complete with black bow tie, was doing doggie tricks like standing on his hind legs, completely oblivious that he was stealing the limelight from his human colleagues. Keke Tumbuan (KT): No interesting story behind my very late first whole-album-by-one-band purchase, which was Suede’s Suede. I just finally found The One sexy enough to be my first. Before that, compilation tapes from friends saved my early teenage years.
Indra Ameng (IA): I’m not so sure about this, but I remember one time my uncle brought me to a music shop when I was eight. I bought two cassettes. The first one was folklore story for children Cinde Laras by Sanggar Cerita, with the voice of the famous Hanna Pertiwi and Maria Oentoe, and the other one was a comedy recording by a famous comedian group, Jayakarta Group. What are your all-time favorite albums? Why? KT: Crazy difficult question. The ones I can think of right now are... Sci-Fi Lullabies by Suede. Actually love all first three albums of Suede but this one just sweeps me off my feet. Revolver by The Beatles. Love the cover. Love the tracks. Love George Harrison’s “Taxman” and Lennon’s “Tomorrow Never Knows”. The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground (and Nico). Infatuation at first hear. Combat Rock by The Clash. Why? IA: Senja di Jakarta by Mochtar Lubis, score: 10. When you want to spend your hard-earned cash, purchase this book. It was first published in English titled Twilight in Jakarta in 1963, this book shows many kinds of characters that lived in Jakarta, from the lowest class to the upper class. The story is still relevant to the reality of Jakarta today. It has made me understand why this city and our nation is still a mess today. Mochtar Lubis is definitely one of the best Indonesian authors, especially if compared with the authors we have today. What new movie should people see? Why? KT: People will always see new films. What they should see is an oldie by Peter Jackson called Bad Taste.

Another movie is Somewhere directed by Sofia Coppola. In Somewhere, Sofia’s directing style can transform the feeling of everyday life’s boredom into beautiful pictures. Fantastic!

John Digweed is nothing less than a legend in dance music terms. He played his tracks at Mint a couple of weeks ago and david trauts decided to throw some questions his way and this is what came back.
You and Sasha were famous for introducing the progressive house genre to dance music in the late 90s. What exactly made it progressive? Was it the beats per minute or something else? Are you still playing Progressive now? It came about as music that was always progressing, moving forward, bands like Leftfield and labels like Guerilla were at the fore front of the scene, the progressive sound that’s around now is utter shite. So, no. I am not playing it. During the early 2000s you were one of the biggest names in the dance music scene. You were popularly voted the best DJ in the world in DJ Mag in 2001. How was that period? Did you see it coming or did it catch you by surprise? It was loads of hard work, you don’t get to number 1 in any field without putting lots of hard work into it. I was touring loads, the Bedrock club night was massive and there were great productions out there. Where do you get your influences for producing your music? Are they different influences now than 10 or 20 years ago? Of course times change and music changes. I would not be where I am now if I was still playing the same music from 10 years ago. You’ve had the Bedrock label with Nick Muir for over 12 years. What do you mostly get out of that? The recording of other people’s music and their success or recording your own stuff? Both really. Making something in the studio and seeing the reaction on the dance floor. You can’t beat it, likewise getting sent a demo and hearing it for the first time and knowing it’s a monster club track and signing it is always a great feeling also. What were some of the high points of your career so far? Each year seems to get better and better I am enjoying playing out more now than ever before, the music that is around at the moment is fantastic.
Is the process in making a set to play at a gig or a radio show different? The radio show I am filling time and with a live show I need to fill the dance floor.

You started DJing at the age of 15. How did you first get interested in electronic music? I always loved music from a very early age so DJing was just a way that I could share my love of music with other people.
Many people say a good DJ is one that can read the crowd and can play what they need to make it a big night. Do you still do that, read the crowd, or just do your own thing? A bit of both, there is no point playing music you like but no one else in the room does. I am known for up front music but I always try to find the future big club tracks before anyone else has heard them.
How many hours of music do you listen to in a week? Pretty much from the moment I get up to late at night. I love it, it’s my passion, so it’s fun. By the looks of your Wikipedia page and website bios I’ve checked recently there was a phase from about 2006 till now where you’ve been laying pretty low. Is that true? I don’t check Wikipedia, all my info is on my website and one thing for sure I don’t think I have ever laid low. You’ve come back recently with a Hollywood movie soundtrack, a Spiderman series soundtrack, toured with David Bowie and packed in 250,000 people on Brighton beach with Fatboy Slim. They say your Transitions radio show is listened to by approximately 14 million people worldwide. So what’s next? What gets you up in the morning nowadays? I am living the dream. Getting to bed is the hard bit as there is not enough hours in the day to get everything done. What did you think of the Mint Bali show? It’s a great little club with a nice vibe and a important place for good quality electronic music for people In Bali. I hope to come back soon. And how did the Stadium Jakarta gig go? Did they like what they heard? Yep, great club and I loved the crowd.

If you think bartending isn’t a big deal, think again. Each year, the Diageo Reserve World Class bartender challenge is held in an attempt to hunt down the world’s best bartenders and to uphold the cocktail culture.
In
its second year held in Indonesia, this time around Indonesian bartenders will not face-off against Singapore and Malaysia bartenders in a regional final. However, it will be a duel against the best of Jakarta versus Bali. From here, Indonesia’s finest will go up against the best-of-the-best bartenders from all over the world in the finals which is set to be held in Brazil this July.
There are three rounds to this world class competition spanning over four months, each having a specific theme and objective the finalists must achieve. And to help and motivate the Jakarta and Bali finalists for the second round of the competition, is Marian Beke, a man who flew in from London to share his knowhow of the business.

Marian himself was first exposed to alcohol in the early age of 13, he would work during the weekends in his father’s wine cellar. The idea of working as a bartender struck a chord with him and when he was 17 he moved to the capital city of Slovakia to work in a bar. In a matter of no time, Marian, the bar hand, became a bartender. He soon realized that if he wanted to move up, he must be able to speak English. He then set his eyes on London. Due to the fact that the bar scene was currently happening in London, it was a relatively easy choice for Marian to make a decision to move there. Fast forward 10 years later, Marian is now a bona fide bar manager that travels the globe as a consultant and trainer for the bartenders and the businesses.
Your definition of a truely good drink? “A true good drink is about the guest and not about the bartender. Think of the guest and of what they’d like to drink.” Your favorite cocktail served in Asia? “I don’t quite remember the name, but I do remember I had it in a Japanese bar, made by a Korean in Singapore. It had a good name, connected with the culture, had a story behind it, and most importantly tasted great and matched the food.”

Marian is the bar manager of East London’s current happening establishment, the Nightjar. This 28-year-old Slovakian has been an important benefactor to the success of this New Orleans themed, speakeasy jazz bar for the past year and a half. His key to success? “It’s all about delivering the product as a whole package,” said Marian. “All of the aspects come to play; the food, the beverages, the service and entertainment. A guest’s experience of the whole package is what determines whether he’ll be coming back again with his friends or talking trash about a particular place.”
When The Beat caught up with Marian it was his second day in Jakarta and he shall continue to Bali and Singapore for the next week. “I try to remind the bartenders the basics, how to serve, the latest trends that are happening, and most importantly how to best interact with the guests,” said Marian. Although not one of the judges of the competition, Marian’s role is important so that the finalists have an idea of what it takes to be a truly world class bartender. Marian uses the time he has during his travels to try the local drinks and to understand the culture. “In Korea, the bartenders are more communicative, in Japan they hold a high degree of attention to detail, which I like. Singapore is relatively one of the greatest metropolitan cities to be a bartender. I’ve only been in Indonesia for a day so I can’t say much about your country. But what I do notice is the long bars that they have in some of the places here in Jakarta.”

Seamless it is as well, as each track slips almost unnoticed into the next, subtly fading each genre in and out. In reality, these two composers have never met. Bach, who lived much earlier then Mozart, was the greatest musical representative of the Baroque era. He came from a long line of musicians who had found employment in German churches, towns and courts for three centuries. A devout Lutheran, he was mostly employed by the Church, so its natural that most of his works have a liturgical theme. In his compositions, Bach strove for music that both represented and celebrated a divinely ordered universe, one whose aesthetic beauty encompasses and surpasses the painful vicissitudes of human existence. As for Mozart, who was born after Bach died, was a child prodigy and lived in the new age of individualism. Salzburg, his birthplace, was a cosmopolitan town that had a throbbing lifestyle and rapidly evolving arts. Within Mozart’s life, new compositional methods heralded the classical music period to the age of the enlightenment. The sonata form invented at this time and perfected by Mozart was its ideal expression. The emphasis was on drama and contrast within each movement through the introduction of multiple themes and rhythms. The term used to describe this new music: ‘Classical’, actually referred to ancient Greece’s idealization of balanced beauty and pure forms.
Unfortunately we live in a century long after their time. Until a real time travel machine is invented, this dream will just have to wait. Luckily, their music legacy transcends time and still remains relevant. Aula Simfonia Jakarta is bringing this legacy back in their upcoming concert: Bach & Mozart – The Italian Spirit in German Hands. Reformed Oratorio Society from Singapore and Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra under the leadership of Dr. Billy Kristanto are trying to revive the great sound of Baroque and Classical through three famous compositions featuring Bach’s Italian Concerto with Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and the immortal “Requiem” piece. It is quite an ambitious program and full of great, powerful melodies. Like a great banquet, your concert will be started with Dr. Billy Kristanto playing Bach’s popular and passionate Italian Concerto for twomanual harpsichord solos before continuing with Mozart’s Symphony No. 40. The first movement of this symphony begins darkly but has a very renowned theme. Mozart’s immortal Requiem piece is set for the second half of the program. As the last and unfinished composition, Requiem is without a doubt one of the most enigmatic pieces of classical music ever composed. I have to say that Aula Simfonia Jakarta has really put on an exciting program this time. Perhaps you don’t need to wait for that time travel machine. Instead, just go to this concert. We began our exotic culinary journey with a pair of appetizers called the Martabak Bourekas (43k); bite-sized flaky pastries filled with spinach, mushrooms, and cheese, and the Crispy Kibbeh Zahir (43k); deep fried minced lamb and pine nuts, served with raita, a yogurt based dip. Both dishes are wonderfully tasty, with herbs and spices that are prominent but never overpowering. The Pasar Sate Samarra is a magnificent smorgasbord of grilled favorites from all over Indonesia. The price is 348k for large platter (enough for three to four people), but we ordered the smaller portion for two to three people at 174k. Favorite satays from Bali, East and Central Java, Yogyakarta, and other areas of the country are presented in one impressive serving. There are lamb, chicken, beef, seafood, and even tempe satays, each with very distinct look and taste that’ll please everyone. Now, the Kambing Panggang Suku Bedouin or Bedouin Grilled Lamb (188k) is absolutely something not to be missed. This is a unique desert specialty, traditionally feasted by the Bedouins. The young and succulent lamb is well marinated and cooked between two giant hot burning stone plates, and put inside a dug hole in the sand, covered by date palm leaves and left for a few hours. The result is a delectable dish like no other!

elcome to Eclectic. Located at Citos in the South Jakarta, this new dining place is situated at one end of the popular mall.We stopped by one Sunday afternoon, just looking for a nice place to hang out and it is nice to see that Eclectic is one of the very rare locations at Citos that is not too affected by the noisy setting. This cozy restaurant is neat and the design is indeed eclectic; you can see that each corner of the place is quite different in style and appearance. The dining area is very tidy and functional, with checkered black and white tiles to give a slightly retro appearance, complete with paintings of The Beatles and Marilyn Monroe.

At one end of this area, a mid sized stage is ready to host the band and have DJ performances. And at the other, three cozy seating areas that are perfect for a group gathering. A couple of them look like beach cabanas. Casually chic. A lively bar a little off center to the room encourages a festive atmosphere. There’s also a comfy area right by the bar equipped with large sofas that look like a popular place for patrons of Eclectic. At the time of our visit, they are full of late afternoon loungers, leisurely sipping their favorite drinks.

momentous step in the fashion industry has been made by Nailah Lymus, a New York-based fashion designer. She is the founder of Underwraps, a modelling agency for Muslim models. The launch of this world’s first Muslim model agency was held on Saturday, in New York’s fashionable Tribeca district, during the New York Fashion Week a few blocks uptown.
“[Muslim models] come from a background where they dress Islamically appropriate, but to be in this industry and to be a model you kind of have to forfeit that,” the 27-year-old said. “That’s why I wanted to start this agency, so you don’t have to do that. You don’t have to lose who you are to be in this business.” There are some issues in the reality of a Muslim modeling agency. Of course they will work together with any designer with certain limitation in the collections to be displayed. Collections showing some serious bare skin will be off-limits. In fact, autumn/winter season collections would be perfectly at home on a Muslim model, with hats, high necks and long sleeves all crucial trends.
Another issue is the backstage treatment for models. As Nailah said, “Our contracts are really detailed, to make sure everything is understood,” she says. “I’m even in the process of designing a portable fitting room for the individual model, because we can’t have men dressing us, and I don’t want it to be a burden or inconvenience to designers who might want to use our models.” Well, they have done it in New York, the fashion industry’s finest, where it’s almost impossible to find a specialized Muslim fashion designer. Here in Indonesia, while modest clothing takes a significant role, and Muslim fashion is increasing dramatically, Muslim modelling agencies are inevitable. Back in 2011, a modelling agency was established by some Muslim models in Jakarta. We’ll keep you posted with its future here, soon!

The aim is to promote Muslim models to take the professional role in the fashion industry, while still maintaining their beliefs. The agency will assist Muslim women working with mainstream designers, but still observe religious requirements (that clothes be loose enough not to reveal their shape, and that only face, hands, and feet can be exposed). It may sound like a challenge, but Lymus is hopeful. In an interview with Fashionista, Nailah Lymus explained that she also wished to bridge the gap between modesty and fashion.

No Excess Baggage with Celine The year 2011 has been a fantastic year for Céline! Remember the all-crazy luggage fever, with all of its variations: the mini, nano, phantom, and shoulder? After Hollywood celebrities were snapped carrying a rainbow of luggage, some of us ran to be placed on a wait-list at local Céline boutiques and with our favorite re-sellers. I know our editors were coveting these bags, and one of them was lucky enough to snatch the dark, grainy Mini Luggage. Well, ladies, Céline is not stopping. When Phoebe Philo took reign as the head designer for Celine, the brand retains its clean, sleek look, with a slight edge of fun. The super simple lambskin tote is practical for everyday use, and comes in a plain one-color. And then came the luggage, with choices of sizes, leathers and combinations of colors. Back in 2008, a Céline bag resonated with the phrase “my mother’s working bag”. Well, in 2011, would you dare say the same thing? After the luggage, here comes the Trapeze! The Return of the Iconic Small Triangle I remember when Prada, for what seemed an eternity, carried a line of bags with a humongous Prada print on the front. I cherished Prada from its earlier days, with its iconic small triangle, innocently placed in the front. Prada from those olden days oozed elegance, simplicity and practicality. I was more than psyched when Prada went back to its roots, and launching a whole truck load of simple, rectangular bags, with the oh-so-missed triangular plate in the front, either in the brand’s signature nylon fabric and criss-cross embossed-leather. If you didn’t get your hands on one of these Prada signature pieces, worry not, we still have 2012. According to recent espionage reports, Prada keeps releasing these models. These bags are the ones you can carry forever and ever. One of my first branded bags was a black Prada nylon bag, a hand-me-down from my older sister when I was 16. I still can totally see me, some 10+ years later, carrying the same bag going to the movies in a casual weekend.

A Parody of Identities
The members of the Parallab are young Bandung artists that have developed their own artistic style. Based on that, they chose “Role Play” as the main theme for their group exhibition in Artsphere Gallery, Dharmawangsa Square, Jakarta Selatan. Each Parallab member is swapping identities with each other, therefore, their aestethic style. It’s interesting to see how these artists have to repress their own ego and pretend to work as their peer. To the public, their unique method is not quite appealing, since most of the audience didn’t know who’s doing who because all the artworks in this exhibition are anonymous. The results vary from paintings to installations and a video. But which artwork belongs to which artist remains a secret that only the artists and the universe will ever know. The moment the audience enters the gallery, they are greeted by a painting that displays
the word “Resin” on a baseball jersey typeface which looks like the old Coca-Cola font. In the back, there’s a painting titled “Sugih Attack” which shows a group of superheroes that are drawn in crossover style between Javanesse and Japanesse culture. No wonder, the word “sugih” means “rich” in Javanesse. In the middle of the gallery lies an artwork that one cannot miss or even step on, “My Perfect Twin” shows a shattered statue head. Each side of the head is, no pun intended, faced perfectly identically to another side of the head. Apart from audience perception on the switched artistic identities, the exhibition is to make us wonder whether the artistic ownership in this modern world is between the artist or the market. s a new artist collective, Parallab is relatively unknown to the public. Their new establishment was initiated by some Bandung artists including Albert Yonathan, Budi Adi Nugroho, Dita Gambiro, Faisal Habibi, Radi Arwinda, Tisa Granicia, Wiyoga Muhardanto, Yuki Agriardi and Yusuf Ismail. They felt the need to organize themselves due to lack of support for emerging artists in their hometown.

hite Shoes and the Couples Company designed a program which brought photography exhibitions and musical performances to various cities in Indonesia. This art project started from the idea of Sari, the vocalist of WSATCC, when she found some old photographs that captured a family while on vacation. She was then inspired to collect holiday photos from various sources to be collected in an exhibition. The idea is in line with the WSATCC album concept and their retro musical styles. Previously they released an art project they called Proyek Album Foto Vakansi in April/May last year. For one month, they invited anyone to submit photos of their holidays. Proyek Album Vakansi is a photographic exhibition of collective memories through vacations. Their goal is to share experiences and memories of a vacation through photographs, and also to show holiday venues scattered throughout the archipelago and around the world.

In the end, Proyek Album Vakansi collected about 400 photos sent in by 92 exhibitors from various cities in Indonesia. The chosen photos are displayed at their site and various alternative spaces in Indonesia. Jakarta became the third stop after this program was held in May 2011 in Room Mes 56, Yogyakarta, and in July 2011 in Aiola Store, Surabaya. (@ribosa)

Balinese Receptionist Wins Award A proud Made Ayu Trisnadewi, or simply Trisna to her friends and colleagues, recently arrived back from Prague with the award for 2nd Runner Up in the International Receptionist Of The Year 2012 competition under her wing. She said at a press gathering at The Legian Hotel, last week, that she felt proud not just for herself but for her country Indonesia and the whole continent of Asia as Asians took out the top three positions in this worldwide competition for hotel front-liners. The finals of the competition in Prague brought together 14 contestants from around the world that had fought their way to the top of their respective countries and zones to compete in a role playing exercise in a mock-up hotel setting in a Prague hotel for the four days of competition. Each contestant was tested with varying role playing situations and a series of interviews which were overseen and reviewed by the judges. “This shows once again that the service industry in Asia is the best and particularly here in Bali,” said General Manager of The Legian Hotel Carla Petzold-Beck, the hotel where Trisna is employed on the front line. The “International Receptionist of The Year” competition is conducted every year having the objective to be a training tool for the younger generation, the future of the hospitality industry, with the emphasis on “Amicale” (friendliness).
Australian indie pop band Architecture in Helsinki is coming to Indonesia, the big durian in particular. The band is pretty well known in hipster circles and true to their indieness, they’ve never really ever made it high on any charts with the exception of their latest album Moment Bends which peaked at the 12 spot on the ARIA chart. As is usually the case though, things in Bali don’t stay static for long, and now the golden sands between Seminyak and Brawa are awash with a new wave of beach clubs, both glitzy, cosy and everything else in between. Newest on the beach block is the eye-catching Karma Beach, just paces from the ocean and tastefully decked out in what fashion mags would probably call bamboo boho style, with lots of wood, comfy oversize beach cushions and private bales to while away a lazy afternoon.
a truly dribble-inducing selection of salami, proscuitto, mozzarella and saganaki with warm marinated olives, hummus, grilled eggplant and capsicum, fresh fennel and Spanish onions with a selection of fresh lightly toasted breads to mop it all up with. Still reeling from the nibbly goodness of the sharing plate we crack on to another couple of cocktails (Karma smack, 100k++) before diving into the mains. With seafood featuring highly across the board on the well-crafted menu, we order up a prawn linguine (210k++) and the salt encrusted snapper (180k++). The fish is literally encased in a shell of rock salt, which requires cracking open before delving in (hint, don’t eat the salt) to the super tender, fall-apart white meat.

ali newbies would be well forgiven for pulling a U-turn somewhere around Petitenget and heading back to Oberoi, thinking that they had reached the end of the Seminyak party and dining scene. Not that long ago, they would have been right to as well, as once sleepy Batu Belig beach had little to offer aside from a few trinket stalls and the odd enterprising ice cream vendor who’d wandered a little further north than usual.
For seafood lovers there is actually a full selection of fruits de mer from the seafood bar, which boasts oysters, calamari, prawns on ice and lobster as well as a host of other offerings, both chilled and grilled.
The overall ambience is pure casual, but with a Med inspired bill of fare from master Aussie chef Brad Harrison and a cocktail list to die for, it’s clear that there are no rough edges around this little gem.
Rounding things off we go for the gluttonous Eton mess with fresh fruit and vanilla ice cream (65k++) and a Bailey’s parfait with espresso Anglaise (60k++) – neither of which touch the sides.
For the enviable task of road testing a few indulgences from the aforementioned food and beverage lists, I bring along my go-to chum, who is always up for a bit of nosh in the name of research, and we quickly get settled with a signature Bloody Mary and a Karma Mule (both 100k++) to get the ball rolling.

lex Kenji showed his energetic performance, if not his grand stature, behind the decks of Sky Garden. The pint-sized Italian electronic music operator was bouncing around so much it must obviously be hard for him to sit still. Kenji is a unique DJ performer and played some banging and very slick tracks and you can tell that everyone on the fourth floor dance floor just loved it. Sexy dancers were showing their moves sliding around the railings and stages. Another incredible night down at Bali’s very own super club. Besides Kenji, Stone Bridge and DJ Romy were pumping it up in the Sky Dome.

His sounds were pretty funked up and something different for the punters to take in. The tracks were going down well as the party crowd took over the dance floor and bar area.

aterbom was the scene of a very pleasent Sunday evening that focused on great music and benefiting CNN Hero Robin Lim’s Bumi Sehat organization. DJ David J, Soldiers of Sounds, human beatbox Tutwelve, Stephanie Bovill, and an Indonesian traditional/modern dance troupe opened up for Cut Chemist. The audio/visual master turntablist and former member of Jurassic 5 had an epic set with live video of his decks intertwined with awesome video clips. Great speeches all around by Robin Lim and Sayan ensured that the event was one of all round love and positivity with most in attendance mellowly dancing the night away.
