Welcome, welcome, we’re back and in action again. After relaxing and getting so introspective and humble for the past month or so it must be high time to get down and boogie. We spent a fair bit of time down in Bali during the fasting month doing what we do, playing what we play. I suppose a lot of you guys did too. Not so bad having the slow time in Jakarta too except those break fasting macets – ahh, you can never manage to escape those blighters. But now we’re back and it’s time to get down to it for another year. With the new year we are starting to get serious with our web presence and will soon be rolling out a new web platform, application and smartphone optimised website to keep you totally informed about everything that’s going on around this big city of ours. No matter if you are new to town or been here forever it will be the one stop shop for information. More about that later. This weekend we take over Epicentrum Mall in Rasuna, Kuningan with first, a party on Saturday night at Otel Lobby which includes drinks from Ciroc mixed into delicious cocktails by Ben and his team, a fashion show from Tutus Kurniati displaying her latest collection inspired by Italian summers and sounds from DJs Jermeny Jay and Mikey Moran. It should be a blast and you are all welcome. Next afternoon on the Sunday, TBJ presents the 8th Sunset BBQ Party at Liquid Exchange with aid from the chefs grilling on the terrace and Bogdan working the floor. We hope to see you all down in Rasuna having a laugh and having a ball this weekend. More info about that and just about everything else going on around town in the What’s On and HereNow sections inside.

DJ Morgz Soundslike Rnb, Soul, NuJazz, House, Electro, Ragga Hails From Jakarta, Indonesia Otel Lobby | Friday 7 September | 11pm Has Been

Morgan began his career at the impressionable age of 17 after watching a group of DJs performing in St. Tropez when he was working as an ice cream boy in France. A friend who was a resident DJ at the VIP Room talked him into buying a turntable set. Since then his world has never been the same. His passion in DJing grew along with an addiction Hip Hop, R n’ B, soul, funk, nu jazz, house, electro, reggae, and raga. Things really got serious when he had his first gig in 2007 in London, in a club called Babble. The next year he was already a resident at Underthewestway. In 2009 Morgan returned to France to become a DJ at Stefano club. He spent the next few years going back and forth drifting between England and France. In 2012, he got an opportunity to visit Jakarta, and after experiencing the city, decided it was just what he needed.

Be there! Morgan DJs on regular basis while writing music and developing elements he uses in his production. One of DJ Morgan’s future engagements is a performance at Otel Lobby where he will throw his various musical characters into one heck of a set. Be there!

Beat DOWN

DJ Mikey Moran

Otel Lobby | Saturday 8 September | 11pm

Here’s the goods on the DJs spinning the beats at the Beat Down next Saturday at Otel Lobby.

DJ Jeremy Jay As a little kid Jeremy walked around all day with his walkman tucked in his pocket playing Michael Jackson tapes. He was brought up with R&B and hiphop music at home. At the age of 12 he discovered urban music and couldn’t live a day without it. At the age of 21 he started to express himself through the use of turntables. He’s been inspired by DJ’s of the calibre of Jazzy Jeff, Miguel Migs and Dennis Ferrer just to name a few. Now a few years later Jeremy is rocking crowds every weekend around Jak City, all around Indonesia, Malaysia and the Netherlands. This Eclectic DJ packs away a funky fresh mix of hiphop/rnb/latin/soul/house music. Besides playing Hiphop or Urban Eclectic, Jeremy also is known to rock the house with a mix of deep/ funky/latin/dirty house music.

www.beatmag.com

Dj Mikey Moran DJ Mikey Moran found his passion for dance music after watching the movie Groove and after a visit to Ibiza watching big names spin in 2002. While growing up his passion for music manifested itself in learning the piano, sax, drums and guitar. His DJ career started after he got hold of some basic turntables from a college friend while attending Mix Academy in Boston in 2003 and his first gig was held at Manna House in Jakarta in 2004. He was soon appearing in many clubs around town and joined with Trigger Productions in 2005. In 2008, he moved to San Francisco to study at an art academy and moved back to Indonesia in 2010. Since then he’s appeared as the opening act for NE-YO, Far East Movement in Jakarta and James Zabiela, Michael Franti, Kelis and Gorillaz in Bali. Mikey Moran plays many styles of music - deep, funky, soulful, tech, minimal, eclectic, electro, hip hop, funk, old skool. Come and enjoy the music from these two likely lads next Saturday night at the Beat Down party.

DJ Zoka &Mahesa Utara Soundslike House, Progressive, Electro

Hail From Jakarta, Indonesia

LUV’s Bar & Dine | Friday 14 September | 11pm Have Been

DJ Zoka was a student of Rumus DJ School and started to learn the ways of the DJ in 2006. Zoka prefers house and progressive, and showed what he was really made of when he got the third place at Pioneer Digital DJ Battle Indonesia 2010. DJ Jerome Isma-Ae, Albin Myers, and Gui Boratto were inspirations for Zoka, so his music is a mix of house, progressive, and also breaks. Next DJ is Mahesa Utara who started his DJ career in 2008 and once was awarded the Best Remix of the Year at REDMA, Rookie of the Year at Paranoia, and Best Remix at IndieRemix. His music is a mix of progressive, minimal, house, with a ‘hard electro bassline’ element.

Tanah Lot, Bali will be the scene of a jazz show you won’t want to miss. Along with the premium jazz acts, you’ll be in perhaps one of the most beautiful places on the island.

J

azz has always been about dialogue, a way to reach into one’s self and others. Perhaps for that reason Nirwana Bali Jazz Series (NBJS), which will be held on September 14 & 15, 2012, at Nirwana Bali Resort, Tanah Lot, Tabanan, will incorporate the country’s top jazz performers, social message, and natural beauty which will make for a one of a kind event.

www.beatmag.com

NBJS is organized by Bakrieland Hotels and Resorts together with Prime Time Jazz as the first installment of a series that will consistently feature big names of the industry. Most importantly NBJS will carry a special significance that resonates beyond the event. First and foremost it’s a token of appreciation towards Indonesian jazz musicians and their enormous contribution to the development of the music in the country. Indonesian jazz musicians of today are always on the look for a medium to express themselves. With the change in musical landscape and the emergence of new technology the needs have become more critical than ever. That’s why NBJS is bringing senior artist Idang Rasjidi and his band, the Idang Rasjidi syndicate, one of the brightest stars like Andien, and local jazz celebrity, such as Rio Sidik quartet on the same stage. There aren’t that many stones left unturned by Idang Rasjidi during his long career as jazz pianist. During his early years Rasjidi had the fortune of working closely with Indonesian masters such as Bubi Chen, the Maulana brothers, Ireng and Kiboud, and Abadi Soesman. Over the years Rasjidi grew into a musician and an entertainer who offered more than his delicate piano playing. He also developed a distinct trait

of mimicking the sound of different musical instruments with his voice that never fails to astonish his audience. On the other end of the spectrum there is Andieni Aisyah Haryadi, or Andien to her growing number of fans. Since the third grade, Andien has been a regular participant in singing competitions. When girls her age were busy rehearsing numbers from Whitney Houston’s catalogue, Andien chose to belt out “The Girl from Ipanema” over and over again. She made her first album at the tender age of 15. Two years later recognition of her talent came when she had the opportunity to work with some of the uppermost musicians like Indra Lesmana and Aksan Syuman. NBJS also serves as a platform for Bali’s own jazz veterans like Rio Sidik Quartet and Koko Harsoe Trio, both mainstays of the dynamic local music scene, to bring their art to wider audience. All of the performers will perform their original numbers and jam with one another. To see them together would certainly be a wonderful sight as jazz musicians are known to feed off each other in a constructive musical dialog. Others who will also benefit from the event are Yayasan Desa Beraban (the Beraban Village Foundation) who will receive a donation from Bakrieland Hotels and Resort to support the education of underprivileged children in the area. On top of that the setting of the beautiful Tanah Lot where the affair will take place will create a unique ambiance for the audience and one which can only be found on the island of the gods.

Jakarta, Quiet City Yes

www.beatmag.com

you read the title correctly. You may think of Jakarta as the city that never sleeps that has horrific, seemingly never-ending traffic congestion and is so frenetic that most of its residents cannot avoid getting stressed out, one way or another. While that may be true most of the time, there are occasions when the city seems to go into a trance-like state, revealing a side of itself that can be quite surprising. This usually happens on tanggal merah (national holidays), when everyone takes a breather – if only for a day. When that holiday is Idul Fitri there are two days off in a row. Coupled with the fact that a significant proportion of the population

Jim Read

the

has already left the city for about 10 days to engage in mudik (trekking to one’s hometown to pay homage to parents or grandparents and touch base), the capital really becomes deserted, allowing journeys that are normally unthinkable or visits to places that are all too easily forgotten. Avoid shopping malls or the big three outdoor attractions that usually become overrun at holiday time: Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in the southeast and Ancol on the north coast. Even though the city may seem empty, many Jakartans are still around and tend to visit these places with their extended families.

I started from Kota and worked my way southward. Only a fiveminute walk away from Kota Station is Kota Tua, an area that is stuffed full of colonialera buildings in whichever direction you look. Taman Fatahillah, the old city hall piazza, lies in its centre and has come alive with bicycles of every decription to hire, along with colonial-style safari helmets. After dark, the square is enlivened by a night market. Only a short walk in a northerly direction is the old port of Sunda Kelapa where Buginese sailing boats still bring in cargo from Kalimantan or eastern Indonesia and are unloaded manually. Running between Sunda Kelapa and Taman Fatahillah is the Kali Besar river, crammed with historic buildings along both of its banks. The area was deserted when I visited yet there was so much of interest to provide a vivid impression of what Batavia (the former Jakarta) must have been like. Hop back on the bus as far as Hotel Indonesia roundabout, which always seems to be busy – even at Idul Fitri. A 10-minute walk along Jl.

f e a t u r e

On the first day of the recent holiday, I opted to visit some of the spots served by busway route 1, which runs from Blok M to Kota. As this was Idul Fitri it was fascinating to see everyone on the bus dressed in their “Sunday best”, as tradition seems to demand. They were travelling about town visiting relatives, friends or generally showing off their new apparel to the world.

031

Imam Bonjol will take you to Taman Suropati, a truly green oasis in the middle of Menteng. On Sunday mornings it is filled with music students practising; whenever you go, sit on one of the benches where you will find the abundant shade from the many mature trees provides a welcome escape from the sun. There are many other attractions worth a visit close to busway route 1: the textile market and museum at Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, or the beautiful Al-Azhar mosque alongside Jl. Sisingamangaraja near Blok M, for example. By the time you read this the myriad “delights” of the megacity will be up and running. The next tanggal merah is not until late October so you will have a while to plan your trip to make the most of Jakarta, when it becomes the quiet city again.

www.beatmag.com

On national holidays there’s much worth seeing in the capital

Opt instead for spots that usually take too long to get to or are simply bypassed in the daily hustle and bustle. The Transjakarta busway will still be running but if you prefer to drive you can enjoy traffic-free roads.

Beauty Tricks from Kai Vinson

www.beatmag.com

1. How to use Concealer

I was lucky enough that the election day for the governor coincided with Kai Vinson’s recent visit to Jakarta. The day off gave me the chance to learn new makeup tips and tricks from a well-known international makeup artist! Kai Vinson is also Bobbi Brown’s Asia Pacific Director for Art and his current visit to Jakarta isn’t his first. Here are some of the tricks and truths that I learned from Kai Vinson’s beauty workshop with Bobbi Brown.

For concealing your black under eye, conceal it until your inner corner of the eyes. Don’t cover your eyelids in concealer, even if you have dark upper lids, because it will only make your eyeshadow crease. He also suggested to set your concealer with the Pale Yellow Pressed Powder that comes with the Bobby Brown Creamy Concealer Kit. According to Kai, our eye areas have active muscles which will move around the placement of cream product. Therefore, it is crucial to actually set it, to make sure that it stays in place. Tap the powder under your eye areas with a fluffy small round brush, Kai suggests a blender brush, and then roll it from the outer corner of the eyes into the inner corner. Remember, roll the brush, don’t tap it or swirl it. Place it flat on your under eye area and once again, roll it.

2. How to choose Blush

According to Kai, when you choose your blush, decide first whether you’re a pink or a coral girl. And then find the tone that you’ll love. If you want to look natural, find a shade like when your cheeks blush when you just pinch it or when you’re just out in the sun. When you want to have a bit of a pop and look much fresher and younger, choose something that is more pigmented

.3. Covering acne scars and breakouts Use Bobbi Brown Face Touch Up Stick, because you will need a dryer concealer with matte and full coverage that will stay in place and actually gives coverage to the spots. On top of that, with this kind of concealer, you can actually put it in your makeup case for a touch up when you’re out and about.

s t y l e

033

4. Drawing eyeliner for uneven eyelid

Draw a smudged eyeliner rather than a crisp one. Because it’s hard to make a balanced eyeliner between the right and left lids when you’re drawing crisp eyeliners. With a smudged one, you can always go back, correct and smudge it to make the two balanced. Start by drawing the difficult side first than continue with the easy one. Don’t close the eye and draw the liner in small strokes. Put your chin up and look down to the mirror to draw the eyeliner.

5. Which mascara to use for a more voluminous look?

Kai said that instead of using primer, he suggested to use two different types of mascara and layer them. Usually, mascara primers are white in colour, thus when you apply your mascara, your mascara will appear greyish. Kai suggested to use two coats of Bobbi Brown No Smudge Mascara because this

mascara will hold your curl like no other. Leave it to dry for about 30 seconds and then curl it with your eyelash curler. Afterwards, apply Bobbi Brown Extreme Mascara for more volume on your lashes. How to apply cream blush: Applying cream blush is best with your fingers, as they warm up the cream, resulting in ease of application. Use your middle finger because it gives most pressure. Dab the cream blush to your cheeks starting from the apple of your cheeks. Don’t rub because it will only transfer back the blush to your finger and not your cheek.

6. Choosing the right eyeshadow for medium to to make it look natural. Apply it below your cheek deep tone skin bones and remember to blend it well.

7. Which Bobbi Brown product to use for contouring

Bobbi Brown Bronzer that is matte in finish and not shimmery is the best one to use for contouring. Choose something that is closer to your skin tone

8. Tools to apply foundation

According to Kai different tools serve different purposes • Fingers: best to apply a sheer to light application and naturally warm up the foundation. • Brush: Gives medium to full coverage but less product is needed, and I personally say that it gives a more flawless finish. • Sponge: Has a more full coverage finish but it needs a lot more product than any other tools. It gives back the product soaked into the sponge to your face much slower, but it is slowly depositing the product back as you pat it to the face. It’s also recommended to be used by acne-prone skin, as you can always throw the sponge away after a single use.

www.beatmag.com

Kai suggested to stay away from greyish-hued eyeshadow as it will look dull and ashy on this skin tone. For instance, for brown eyeshadow, choose something that has a brown red hue rather than a brown greyish hue. Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in Mahogany or Espresso would be the perfect choice. For a party or night time look, choose plumy colour such as Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow in Eggplant. A red flag should be raised against any eyeshadows that are on the grey tone or bluish grey, because it will look too ashy.

MYTH OR FACT?

3. Stress can lead to hair lost – True! Traumatic stress that leads to hair fall is called telogen effluvium. The problem is, every single day, as women, we’re pressed with many different problems, and thus leading to stress. The solution? Just be happy for just about anything… errr… that’s kind of hard to do, isn’t it?

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS IN HAIR loss PROBLEMs

W

hen it comes to hair care, do you know which is myth or which is fact? Here’s an example, vigorously drying your hair with a towel will only lead to hair breakage? Myth. That’s why it’s important to separate the myth from the fact. Especially when it comes to hair loss problems. Did you know that seven out of 10 women out there experience hair loss? It’s no joke, really! And 80% of hair loss problems start from the roots and only the remaining number is caused by hair breakage. Most shampoos available on the market are targeted for hair loss caused by hair breakage. Therefore, many balding women don’t find the right solution for their hair loss problem. And hair loss is experienced by 70% of women in Indonesia. The most scary fact is that, hair loss can happen to anyone! Including you! Regardless of your age, it’s a problem. It’s very important that we straighten out all the misconceptions. Because it’s very likely, that you’re part of the 70% that is slowly turning bald. We don’t want to believe in misleading myths that have no proof of its efficacy, or even worst, only aggravates hair loss. Test yourself! Read the statements below and check whether you can tell whether they are myths or facts...

www.beatmag.com

to be addressed separately and treated differently. But that’s not saying that people who experience hair loss can’t have dandruff at the same time, but it’s not actually a cause and effect relationship.

1. 100 hair strands of hair loss a day is normal – Fact! The average person loses 80 – 120 hair strands a day. So if you don’t lose that much on average, don’t worry, you don’t have a problem, yet. In fact, if it’s only an isolated incident, say, when you brush your hair or you pony tail your hair and there are hair strands left on the hair band, then that’s not a problem. But when the hair loss is recurring – on your pillow when you wake up in the morning, when you brush your hair, on the floor, or even when you brush your hair with your hand, etc – then, you may be having a problem. 2. Dandruff can cause hair loss – I actually want to say this is a fact but the truth is, it’s a myth, because dandruff and hair loss are two different problems. Each needs

4. Taking vitamin that stimulate hair growth actually works! Or Not! Too bad, this is actually only a myth. Hair is actually a non-viable tissue. Taking vitamins, in the form of drink or other, including rubbing them to our hair or scalp will have no effect on hair growth. 5. Massaging your hair and brushing it will stimulate hair growth – Ok, this might be the reason why in hair salons, the shampoo boy or your stylist massages the hair with tonic ever so powerfully. The truth? It’s actually a myth. You only need your treatment products to touch your scalp and massage it lightly to even it out and it should be able to penetrate deeper into your scalp to treat the problem within. Follicles under the skin of our scalp are not receptive to physical stimulation. In fact, friction caused by massaging it vigorously will only damage the hair and eventually cause hair breakage. 6. Wigs, hats or even hijabs can prohibit hair growth – Myth! Wearing wigs, hats or hijabs, doesn’t inhibit your hair growth, it can however cause hair breakage and hair fall that is caused by traction alopecia. 7. Shampooing your hair every day can affect hair growth - Also a myth. There’s not enough evidence shown that shampooing your hair everyday leads to a breakage in your scalp and hair. Instead, over-production of sebum on your scalp can lead to dandruff and unwanted odor. 8. You need to change your shampoo from time to time – This is actually a myth. There’s no such thing as being immune to a shampoo after using it for long period of time. This concept which is called tachyphylaxis doesn’t actually apply to shampoos. It is, however, wise to choose a shampoo that targets your specific concern. It goes without saying that, as your hair and scalp concerns change, you must also reconsider to change your hair care products to tackle these concerns. 9. Cutting your hair can make your hair grow longer, faster - By now, you should know that this is a myth. People have an average of 1 cm of hair growth a month, and cutting your hair will not make any difference. 10. Sun rays make your hair grows faster – It’s a myth. In the contrary, radiation from the sun rays can damage your hair thus prohibit the growth. So, how many points did you get girls?

EIGHT TREASURES Amid the h u s tle a n d b u s tle of d o w n t o w n , a n e w restauran t i s s e tti n g th e d i n i n g sce n e a b uz z .

ocated near Sarinah Thamrin, since opening in mid July, Eight Treasures has been creating quite a stir in the local restaurant scene with its Chinese Western fusion menu. The interior features a contemporary palette of wood and stone. This doesn’t look like your parents’ typical Chinese eatery. But should you opt for a slightly more ethnic atmosphere, the two private rooms here are ready for you. The menu is fairly extensive, so we asked the friendly staff what the specialties of the house were. They did not disappoint. First came the Beggar’s Chicken (168k). The dish has a romantic tale behind it. It begins with a starving beggar in rural China who stole a chicken. He then built a fire and prepared the chicken for cooking. Suddenly, the emperor’s guards came along with the Emperor, and in a panic to hide the chicken the beggar covered it with mud and threw it into the fire. Attracted by the aroma of the baked chicken, the Emperor stops and dines with the beggar, demanding to know how this delicious meal was created. “Beggar’s Chicken”

is subsequently added to the list of dishes served at the Imperial court. The dish is actually made from chicken soaked in herbs, wrapped with lotus leaves, covered in clay, and baked. While the chicken is packed with a delicious stuffing, it is the leaf and mud wrapping that makes this dish so intriguing, tender and flavorful. To add a dramatic touch, the clay cover is shaped like a chicken, and you have to crack it open with a hammer. A must try! Next up is the Grilled Lamb Chop with Black Pepper Sauce (88k). If you think you know about black pepper sauce, think again! The addition of herbs and spices really takes it up a notch. The sauce compliments the lamb perfectly. Now here’s something on the menu that we were most intrigued about; the Grilled Baby Crocodile Steak (98k)! We’ve never had crocodile meat before, so we were excited to try it. Low in fat and cholesterol, but high in

protein, it has a lot of health benefits. It also contains collagen, which is good for your skin. It increases stamina and strength, and also one of the natural medical treatments for allergy and asthma. We were sold! The meat is actually succulent. And the special Eight Treasure sauce, which is full of delicious herbs and spices, was wonderful. There are a couple more crocodile dishes available here; maybe we’ll just have to try them next time!

We ended our unique dining experience with some delightful Luwak Coffee (130k), nicely served in a siphon coffee filter.

We can see savvy diners flock to this restaurant, both for a glass of their favorite wine (It has quite an extensive collection), or to experience Eight Treasure’s tantalizing cuisine. Well recommended. (Budi Iskandar)

As for dessert, we ordered the Sago Timor Pudding (18k). The sago is a specialty from the Eastern parts of Indonesia. The smooth, gelatinous sago is smothered with coconut milk sauce. And pieces of jack fruit were put on top, adding a certain zing to this dessert. The Eight Treasures Golden Pears (18k) is also a good pick. It’s not actually made of pears, but it’s a delicious new twist on traditional banana fritters (pisang goreng).

black house

A new classy joint with some cheeky twists is ready to welcome you!

www.beatmag.com

Tucked away on a leafy street in the South of Jakarta, Black House was opened back in July. It is situated on Jalan Cililin, near the intersection of Jalan Wolter Monginsidi and Jalan Gunawarman, at the back of STM Penerbangan school. While it may not look like a location for a trendy eatery (yet), we always fancy finding a new, slightly hidden gem in Jakarta’s culinary scene such as this one. Black House looks like a petite place, but once you walk inside, the options flood your senses. The restaurant has seven different areas on four floor levels. Each area offers you a different and unique experience. For example, there’s a Books Area on the first floor which resembles a cozy reading room in some book lover’s house. On the second floor, the pinkish Candy Area is pretty cute, and the Music Area on the third floor can be a cool lounge room to hang out. But the one area that you should experience is on the top floor. Named the “Heaven Area”, it is an open top area with quite a view of Jakarta’s

skyline. Now, to get the optimum effect of this rooftop area, you should go up there for a nice sunset or on a clear night. We recently visited Black House one early evening and judging from the sizeable crowd, this little eatery has been getting some good word of mouth lately. The dramatic lighting adds a certain cool ambiance and encourages a fairly festive lounge atmosphere. Now on to the food. The helpful staff suggested some chef’s recommendations for us. A hearty Chicken Gumbo (26k) started us on the right note. This one was a good twist from the original seafood version. Another delicious dish here is the Chicken Quesadillas (55k). Served on a small wooden cutting board, the combo of tortilla bread with cheese, peppers, onions, and generous chunks of chicken was a worthy winner!

A couple of refreshing mocktail creations are just perfect for your meal; the Two to Mango (33k), a mix of mango juice, mango pudding, mango ice cream, and tonic water, and the Blue Demon (33k); lychee juice, apple juice, fresh lemon, blue curaçao, and soda water.

Cupcake (19.5k) - a blend of chocolate and cream cheese. And you just have to try the interestingly named, but very delectable, Ugly Nutella (36k)! Yummy… The Choco Berry (33k); hot chocolate, strawberry milk, cinnamon, with a sweet surprise of strawberry candy on the bottom is a specialty created by black house’s experienced barrista and a perfect ending for our visit.

The Cheesy Chicken Steak (70k) was the next to make it to our table. Tasty cheese blanketed the chicken steak which gave a certain oomph, accompanied by some side salad and French fries. Simply scrumptious.

For a sophisticated but relaxed dining experience, black house is one hidden gem And if you’re craving for something sweet, go waiting to be discovered. With a lively and fun for the delicious desserts such as the Cookies ambiance, it’s the type of place you want to dine Blast (33k) - cookies, vanilla, white chocolate, and lounge with a date or a group of friends. with a dash of espresso, or the Black House (Budi Iskandar)

The Beauty of

Art Songs

By Erza S.T.

So what is art song exactly? Based on the historical traces that we know, an art song can be defined as a poem set to music, usually for a trained voice and piano accompaniment with a duration of about three minutes. Popular around European countries, art song has many names such as lieder (Germany), chansons (French), canciones (Spanish), and canzoni (Italy). Not like other forms of classical music, art song is not part of a staged work and it is intended for performance as part of a recital or other relatively formal social occasion. Art song probably reached a climax in expression, appreciation and perfection during the early 19th century. Composer Schubert is often said as the father of the art songs movement as he is known to compose many of them. Through him, we learned how to exploit the device of varying a strophic

As one of Indonesia’s young and talented mezzo-sopranos, Yosefin Emilia has been performing in some great opera production including in Saint-Saens’ Samson et Dalila as Dalila and Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel as Hansel. She is currently studying at Hochschule fur Musik Freiburg in Germany on vocals. Like Yosefin, Adhi Jacinth is a talented young pianist who has graduated from the music pedagogy department of Hochschule fur Musik Freiburgas well. This award-winning pianist has also performed all around Europe.

A duo of young talents featuring mezzosoprano Yosefin Emilia and pianist Adhi Jacinth are planning to present Jakarta with their interpretation of some famous art songs in a recital called “Lachen und Weinen” (Tawa dan Tangis). Choosing Erasmus Huis to give that intimate setting, the duo has selected some of the most beautiful art song compositions from Schubert, Brahms, Schoenberg and Mahler. On this two sessioned recital, Yosefiin Emilia and Adhi Jacinth will also perform some famous arias from operas such as Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice , Ponchielli’s La Giaconda and Rossini’s Tancredi .

The human voice is a natural instrument that has unique capabilities. Speech and music have been combined since the earliest times, so that “song” is probably one of the oldest musical forms. Simple definitions for song might be “a piece of music performed by voice, with or without instrumental accompaniment”, or “a poem set to music.” However the trend of having textual interpretation into music was not started until the mid-16th century.

Art song might not be as popular or big as opera or symphony pieces, but it is surely romantic and beautiful to enjoy. Lachen und Weinen 8 August 2012 starting from 19.30 onwards Erasmus Huis For more information: Gita +62857 14 556 557

s one of the music genres, classical music is perhaps known as the one that possesses one of the widest varieties. So far in TBJ, we have been fortunate enough to experience quite a lot of variations of classical music from operas to even early music compositions. This time around, we are going to discuss another branch of classical music known as art song.

The Escape, The Political campaign, and The Heist! What is the common bridge among the three nouns in the title of this article? Humans usually try to do everything to win, we can be right or sometimes we even justify the wrongs. A recently trained agent trying to escape the government’s dirty work, two congressional candidates campaigning at each other’s throat, and a group of professional thieves, each with a hidden agenda, trying to score a heist. Who does right or wrong? Judge yourself and check out www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

The Bourne Legacy Action, Adventure, Mystery. Director: Tony Gilroy. Writers: Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy. Cast: Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen, Stacy Keach, Oscar Isaac.

Mari semua berharap! Have we got enough of Jason Bourne, the invincible can-do-anything American version of James Bond? Maybe yes, maybe no. Well, to be honest we may need a new hero, so writer-director Tony Gilroy made a bold move to replace Matt Damon from previous three films and created a new super agent with Jeremy Renner. The action will probably be bolder and faster as we all have hoped for and with exotic Manila as a setting, we expect a few surprises too. So if you’re into action packed spy thrillers (who isn‘t?), this might be the film to watch this week.

The Campaign Comedy. Director: Jay Roach. Writers: Chris Henchy, Shawn Harwell. Cast: Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Katherine La Nasa.

Firstly, can you imagine a congressman like Will Ferrell? Hold the thought, now try to imagine Zach Galifianakis as a tough cutthroat rival politician. You can tell how their campaigns against each other will make you burst into laughter already, right? That’s exactly what director Jay Roach (Meet The Parents) is serving you in what looks like the political comedy of a lifetime.

The Thieves Korean, Action. Director: Dong-hun Choi. Writers: Dong-hun Choi, Lee Gi-Cheol. Cast: Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Kim Soo-hyun, Gianna Jun, Lee Jung-jae, Simon Yam, Angelica Lee. Well crafted heist movies are always fun to watch, and with all the con men, grifters, hackers, and safe-crackers plotting a cool scheme and working together to steal, say $20 million in diamonds from a high-tech-security casino, sometimes you wish you were in a theft ring. That’s exactly the premise from this Korean box office smash from director Dong-hun Choi. It’s not just merely the Asian version of Ocean’s Eleven with skilled and sexy women, it’s a heist film mixed with intriguing drama among the characters risking the success of the job. Being the fourth highest grossing Korean film, we’re betting this will be a good one.

New Sculpture Art Exhibition Aug 11 2012

N

ew sculpture art has undeniably been influenced by media and the vast amount and speed of information. But it was also born out of continuous explorations and the results of this creativity are on the sculptors themselves.

www.beatmag.com

This exhibition was a kind of study or critique on the trend of new sculpture art. The curator selected 14 artists whose works demonstrate this trend and those who have been exploring in this realm for a while. Artist such as Abdi Setiawan, Aditya Novali, Anusapati, Didi Kasi, Erwin Utoyo put out their finest work on display, much to the audience at Salihara gallery’s pleasure. New sculpture art is a trend which emerged as an expansion of the conventions of modern sculpture that began trending in the 90’s and has continued to develop till today. Such art pieces are born out of continuous exploration combined with the artists creative knack to turn imagination to something real and tangible.

Flygrip

FlyGrip is an accessory that enables you to use your smartphone one-handed. I came up with the idea for FlyGrip after noticing how frustrating it was to rely on both hands when texting, surfing the web, or composing an email. With FlyGrip, you don’t have to worry about misclicking, fumbling, dropping your phone, and compromised reception due to the “death grip” issue. When not in use, FlyGrip snaps into place so your device can still fit in your pocket or purse. FlyGrip was engineered in response to the inherent difficulties with holding and navigating touchscreens with one hand and to repel members of the opposite sex at the same time. www.flygrip.com $29.95

If you have a large record collection, you might want to enjoy some of that old music on your iPad or iphone. Well now you can transfer those songs directly from your record to your Apple device with the iLP Turntable. Just put your iDevice in the slot, play the record and transfer those old classics straight into your iPad’s music app. It will even separate tracks automatically, which is a nice bonus. You can also plug this turntable into the nearest USB port on your computer and start converting your collection. www.firebox.com £99.99

The Google Galaxy Nexus runs a dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor with an accompanying dual-core graphics chip, 1024MB of RAM, a 1750 mAh battery, a 1.3 MP front camera and 5 MP rear camera capable of 1080p video and zero shutter lag, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC. Epson is back with its latest gadget in the form of the Epson E200. This wristwatch-type pulse monitor adopts the company’s advanced sensing technology and an Epson-made sensor to measure your pulse rate by contact with your wrist. The Epson E200 has an LCD screen that displays the amount of exercise required to achieve a fat-burning heart rate. The E200 takes advantage of the light-absorbing property of the hemoglobin in blood to measure the wearer’s heart rate. The monitor directs a harmless LED into the skin, and then uses lightabsorbing elements to measure the amount of light that is not absorbed by the hemoglobin and which is reflected back from inside the body. www.epson.com

This is the organized pillbox that provides audible and visual alerts to help ensure the proper medications are taken at the prescribed dosage and time. When it’s time to take a medication, the pillbox beeps every two seconds, a green LED on the front of the box illuminates, and the compartment that holds the correct medication lights up. The pillbox connects to a computer for an initial setup and the included software allows you to input prescription drug information and instructions. The pillbox’s internal memory stores the name of each medication, the dosage, how often it’s taken, and drug indications. The software also allows you to print a medication reference sheet that attaches underneath the lid and aligns with 16 compartments that hold samples of your prescriptions, enabling easy identification. The pillbox has compartments labeled morning, noon, evening, and bedtime for each day of the week and pills are stored in removable baskets inside each compartment. Includes USB cable. Operates for up to six weeks after a four-hour charge via AC. Just wait until the party version comes out... www.hammacher.com $249.95

The Home smoother

Cellulite

This is the home device that safely and painlessly smoothes and tightens dimpled skin caused by cellulite. Developed in France after 20 years of engineering research, the unit’s motorized rollers use gentle suction and massaging pulsations to stimulate fat metabolism. This activates lipolysis--the natural breakdown of fat cells-and boosts the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that contribute to elasticity. After six minutes of use four times a week, skin appears firmer and smoother, without the expense and hassle of repeat visits to an aesthetician. Ideal for use on the thighs and buttocks, the device includes five detachable heads of different widths for smoothing and tightening skin elsewhere on the body, including the delicate areas around the eyelid, lip, and neck. Plugs into AC. Includes five treatment heads, cleaning wipes, and 20 replacement filters. Or you could just excercise that fat ass away...www.hammacher.com $1,500

eachside signature restaurant Starfish Bloo epitomizes the W ethos of pure luxury and absolute service, coupled with a unique aquamarine concept and of course, mouth-watering food courtesy of new head chef Kevin Chung. Mauritian born, Australian bred Kevin joins the team at W having proved his mettle in the kitchens of such luminary Aussie restaurants as Longrain and Rockpool, and is hungry to inject his own brand of PanAsian cuisine into the menu at Starfish Bloo.

The restaurant itself is like some kind of undersea lair, with bubbling fishtanks dotted around between huge wicker cages that surround each table to resemble lobster pots. Splashes of turquoise further enhance the sub marine feel, boosted by the proximity of the crashing waves on Seminyak beach within close earshot. As you’d expect from W, the industrious wait staff make sure that your every whim is

catered to, with efficient service and a genuine enthusiasm for friendly conversation that goes far beyond the ubiquitous cheerful Bali smile.

From the “Raw, Rare, Naked” menu we went for the Swordfish Ceviche with yuzu soy, thin jalapeno slices and coriander (145k++), making sure to leave space for the two seafood mains of Fried Whole Guramie (120k++) with soy mirin dipping, holly basil, crispy garlic and green papaya salad, and the Pan Roasted Barramundi (220k++) with crispy sour dough, cauliflower puree and Japanese mushroom.

through the menu shows that we’ve only just scratched the surface of what’s on offer at Starfish Bloo. With separate lunch and dinner menus, and a delectable Sunday brunch, all crammed full of treats such as oysters, sushi, sashimi, curries and prime cuts and more, there is something for everyone at this Seminyak Despite our lunchtime gluttony, a glance back modern classic. My Starfish Bloo experience began with a breezy chat over an iced tea with Kevin about some of the new creations he’s added to the menu, before he sent out a selection of his favourites for myself and a friend to check out. First up from the starters were the Hand Harvested Diver Scallops with daikon puree, baby herbs, tobico and miso foam (100k++) – all hungrily scooped up and devoured individually on one spoon to let all of the subtleties of the puree and miso foam infuse with the tender white scallop meat. Next to set my tastebuds alight from the starters list was the Crispy Duck Salad (110k++), with masterstock caramel, Thai basil, coriander, mint and kaffir lime – all ready to be rolled up into soft savoury pancakes, kind of like an Asian burrito.

New Club Opens

huge crowd turned up to try the flavours and tastes of the newest club in town, Pyramid last Friday night. The usual issues of a soft opening; heat and smoke extraction, were apparent, with the large crowd of just about everybody in town basically overwhelming the new staff to boot. All said and done though, it was a pretty damn good opening party with DJs including, James Sullivan, Triple Jem, Denis, and more, twisting out a bunch of cool tracks from the brand new decks. It has a nice sized dance floor and is sure to be a great venue when the dust settles.

Bersama Kita Bintang Reunited

T

he Bintang reunion show that featured the nation’s top musicians went down in Kuta beach with a bang. After getting their free can of beer at the entrance, the fans went straight toward the stage to rock with Gigi, Naif, Ari Lasso, and DJ Riri. The show was opened by a very entertaining performance by Naif who featured Ari Lasso on some of their best numbers. Next up was a reunion performance by all past and present members of Gigi who headlined the night. The boys put out a collaborative performance worthy of their superstar status. It was without a doubt one of the classiest and most electrifying rock concerts that ever came to Kuta.
