This month will see a change with the French community having a night out on the town with a production from the Paris Jakarta Express, which is a Francophile music collective that works with local Indonesian bands trying to promote them overseas, mainly France. It should be an interesting night. That is on February 26 at Fez Dungeon. So, as the rain comes down and you are getting a little fed up with being in the house or apartment, just flick through the beat for some inspiration and get out to one of the big

Best Of The Best For adoring K-pop fans, the ‘Best of Best Concert’ set to be held in Jakarta is exactly what it implies. How can it not be when the line up includes top of the line K-pop acts such as, SHINee, Bangtan Boys (BTS), Winner, and world wide phenomenon Girls Generation. When it was first announced November last year, the concert was initially scheduled to be held in January. Dream Ultra Lounge Sitting on what was once Moovina lounge in Plaza Indonesia, Dream Ultra Lounge will be officially launched this month on the 13th. The lounge is set to be one of the city’s best pre-club destinations and on the 13th will see performances by DJ Dipha Barus and Tiara Eve. On Valentine’s Day DJ Stefan Lan from Zurich will present the crowd with Swiss sound, and several local DJs that confirmed to play there are DJ Winky, Yasmin, Princess Joana and Epic Crew Project. From Monday to Friday guests will be entertained by an acoustic band, and not to mention residents DJ Dee and Adhel will bring in the latest dance tunes.

SCOOP New Resident DJ at Park Lane Hotel The Park Lane Hotel announced Aiu Kandi as the new resident DJ at Riva Bar & Lounge. She started DJing back in 2007 with a great passion for dance music. Aiu was a contestant in Miss Indonesia in 2007 repesenting Jogjakarta and part of Fun Fearless Female Cosmopolitan. If you want to listen DJ Aiu Kandi play house and electro, just drop by to Riva every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9pm onwards. The other news, The Park Lane Hotel is confirmating American R&B singersongwriter and producer, Ketih Martin will be performing at Riva Bar & Lounge for Valentine’s Day. Free cocktails for the ladies at Karumba Karumba Rooftop Rum Bar atop Mercure Jakarta Simatupang now hosts a ladies night every Thursday, of which the ladies shall receive two free cocktails (between 9pm till midnight). The 5th Music Gallery Initiated by the Semi-Autonomous Body (BSO) Band, a student musical activity unit of Faculty of Economy Universitas Indonesia, the Music Gallery is an annual musical festival that has developed throughout the years, from bands and acts within the university, to national and international stars. In its fifth year, the Music Gallery will be held in Skeeno Hall, Gandaria City on Saturday, March 14. Confirmed local bands that will perform include Bara Suara, Sore, The Wild and The Trees, and Naif. DJ Botnek
Botnek is a DJ/production duo from Montreal, Canada, and their unique style and productions take influence from electro house, rave and techno. They gained attention of the electronic music scene after winning a remix competition for Dim Mak Records, for Felix Cartal’s single “Skeleton”. Aside from releasing their EP entitled Plonk in 2011, the duo have completed remixes for big names including Mat Zo & Porter Robinson, and Steve Aoki. In 2012 they released their second EP “Sriracha and Beer” and their single “Through the Night” was released in 2013. They will be entertaining the crowd in X2 Club on February 6.

Dzeko & Torres
Julian Dzeko and Luis Torres of Canada make up Dzeko & Torres. They only officially came together in 2010, but have already played at Ultra, Tomorrowland, and tour around the world. If you don’t know her by name, you’ve certainly heard her voice. Heather Bright is responsible for some of EDM’s biggest records including “Language” with Porter Robinson, “Stars Come Out” with Zedd, and “Don’t Blame The Party” with Bingo Players, just to name a few. This Grammy-nominated songstress has collaborated with everyone from Usher to Britney Spears to Justin Bieber. From his early roots in his studio in West Midland, UK, to pioneering releases through reputed major labels, Funkagenda’s stamp on dance music can be felt all across the world. Adam Walder, AKA Funkagenda, was hailed as DJ Mag’s best breakthrough artist in 2009. Funkagenda’s sound attracts musical partnerships a spectrum of genres, remixing artists including Basement Jaxx, Moby, Fat Boy Slim and Dirty Vegas. His production contributions to the Black Eyed Peas album ‘The E.N.D.’ were further recognised by an ‘Album of the Year’ nomination and a ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ award at the 52nd Annual Grammy’s. Described by MTV as “One of the most promising artists for 2011″, Max Vangelli is a Moldovan born, San Fransisco based DJ. The 29-year-old launched his debut album People of the Night in 2012, of which was made in collaboration with AN21 (brother of Steve Angello of the defunct Swedish House Mafia). He will lead the crowd in Colosseum on Friday, February 20.

Christina gained recognition after she got a one-in-a-lifetime chance to sing a song in the Fox TV show, So You Think You Can Dance. That single, “Jar of Hearts”, went to sell over 3 million copies in the US and became an international hit. She penned another song in 2012 called “A Thousand Years” and was a soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. owered by a top notch audio system matched with state-of-the-art light show, Colosseum Club has defined the DJ culture scene within the country, and set itself as one of the best clubs in Southeast Asia. However, the fancy sound and light system mean nothing without excellent resident DJs leading the crowd. To please the club’s demanding electronic music following, the management of Colosseum Club forged Trilions, a trio DJ act comprising of three notable Indonesian DJs: Six Pramata, Osvaldo Nugroho, and Rongkie. Six Pramata started his DJ career in Retro (Crowne Plaza Hotel) in 2006 and got to be one of the local acts to take part in the Swedish House Mafia ‘One Last Tour’ in Jakarta on 2012. Osvaldo Nugroho started in Shooter (Kemang) in 2003 and was a DJ in the pioneering rave party, Jakarta Movement, in 2004. MC Rongkie got his start in Amare, Bandung in 2006 and soon made his way to Jakarta. To get to know more about Trilions, below is The Beat Jakarta’s recent interview with the trio. What is Trilions? Lions have been symbolised as the mighty protectors of a castle, and that is in line with our calling as the ‘three lions’ of Colosseum. Not only to serve the crowd in Colosseum, Trilions was launched to be one of the best DJ brands in all the country. Outside of Colosseum, we have taken part in the recent Djakarta Warehouse Project (Indonesia’s annual largest electronic music festival). How did you guys become Trilions? The management of Colosseum created Trilions through a very selective process-almost everyone (DJs) wanted to be a resident at Colosseum! Amongst the features they considered were a DJ’s musical background, ability to entertain a crowd and recognition within the industry.
How would you guys explain Colosseum to someone who has never been there? The crowd in Colosseum is what the industry would recognise as a level ‘A’ crowd. This implies a deep understanding and appreciation towards electronic music. In the beginning people assumed Colosseum would just be another ‘Kota’-style club. However in just a short period of time Colosseum proved itself to be the ‘it’ club for true fans of the DJ culture. Colosseum was even recently crowned as Indonesia’s Club of the Year. The best world-class DJs take to the DJ booth of Colosseum on a monthly basis. What are some tricks and skills that you guys have learned from them? Colosseum has given us a rare opportunity to be up close and personal with invited international DJs. We have learned a lot so far, from understanding and reading the musical flow, choosing the right tempo and tracks, time management, sound check and many of their professional traits. Most importantly, we learned that attitude is most important. As residents, you guys ‘define’ the sound of Colosseum. Can you describe in words what that is? Simply put, the sound of Colosseum is the best of 120-138 BPM. Who are the top DJs that you look up to (local and international)? Local DJs are Denny Clubhoppers, Blanco, and DMZ. International DJs are Above and Beyond, (now defunct) Swedish House Mafia, and Daft Punk. www.beatmag.com

is a duo, DJ and MC act made up of two Dutch party heads (Ron Simpson & Rob Black) that guarantee to tear a club or festival up in any city around the world. Delivering high-energy feel good sounds and an undefeated stage presence and show to any venue, these two performers have an unparalleled bond that elevates every crowd to the next level and leaves them begging for more. You can see them for yourself on Friday February 20 at X2 but first, we were lucky enough to have a quick chat with Ron about why Girls Love DJs.
How did Girls Love DJs come about, how did you meet and start playing music? Girls Love DJs started out as a party concept in Amsterdam more than 10 years ago. A bunch of friends who could DJ would play their own sounds at a club and all the girls would show up to dance. Bringing all of that talent together and combining it with the love for your favorite songs simply works. You could feel the fun running in your veins. It escalated really quickly into unbelievable parties all over the Netherlands and after that all over the world.
After crossing the borders and doing big festival stages we decided to take it to the next step. We captured the magic of the events, that energy, that indescribable feeling and made it ours in a DJ set. We started to produce music to support our set with surprises and before we knew it, it all made sense. The Amsterdam party scene is small and if you’re any good, it’s inevitable that you meet each other. We met each other and immediately hit it off as if we were brothers. This was 2012 and the rest is history.

FEATURE You guys look like a fun bunch of dudes, you sure play fun music. The new modern, banging electro stuff with a few nuances here and there. Is that what you have always played or is that something new? Ha! That’s because we are. Even if we’re not performing, we are always playing around. Life should be celebrated at any moment in big and small things. We do it all for the kicks and fun and our music needs to express the way we feel. We are known to mix it up a little, we aren’t afraid to play different genres, but the sound will always be the same. High energy, much fun, the girls love it and there will always be enough impact to get the guys jumping too. We have always had this sound, but the genres may change along with the times. How about producing? You’ve done a few remixes of Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, John Newman, what other music have you producing lately? In the beginning we used our productions to elevate our own sets. You know the usual edits, remixes and bootlegs. Eventually we were making official remixes for Beyonce, working with Alvaro, Dirtcaps, The Partysquad and many others. That was the focus for last year, but for 2015 we have a lot of originals lined up for you. You can expect anything from us really, it could be future house or something a bit more EDMish, but it will always sound like us. What are some of the greatest music influences? We get inspired by all sorts of sounds. We love the big pop songs that a superstar like Calvin Harris makes, just as much as the beats by Tchami or Oliver Heldens. Sometimes we dive into some deephouse or can’t stand still to those massive UK bass lines. We get influenced and inspired all over the place. What were some of the highlights of 2014 and what are they gonna be in 2015? We did a big Totally Summer Tour last year with 20+ shows all over Europe, we played

in China too and in Suriname. Tour life is fantastic. Especially when you can combine it with the biggest festivals in your home country. Amsterdam Open Air, Valhalla, Kingsday, Mysteryland and many more made this summer unforgettable. In 2015 we are doing it all again, just a little harder, better, faster, stronger. Starting out with our shows in Indonesia, we can’t wait! Girls Love DJs are famous for livening up any party. Do you think it’s getting wilder all the time or do you see yourselves slowing down soon? Well, to be honest we have seen a lot of craziness out there lately. We think it’s about releasing energy, having fun, dancing, smiling and creating an experience, the time of your life and something worth remembering. It doesn’t always have to be sitdowns, party tricks and stagedives to be legendary. Sometimes when the connection with the crowd is right, you can really let the music do all the talking. We love doing both. And where would you say are the best parties around the world? Where do you have the best time normally? That is an impossible question to answer. Playing in Europe is amazing, but it takes an amazing set to live up to those expectations. They are very familiar with your sounds and everyone around you, but if you push their buttons they will definitely go nuts! Playing in Asia is totally different. It’s a beautiful challenge, all about connecting and learning with and from the crowd. We love discovering what makes you go crazy! Last question. Ever been to Indonesia before? It’s the first time for one of us (Rob) but he will love it for sure… “How I know?” I’ve been there like 10 times already. Thanks Ron, see you on the dance floor.

The electronic music festival took everyone by surprise and was one of the greatest hits in the history of dance music in Bali and Indonesia. Dreamfields has actually been in existence since a few years ago in Holland and is now a mainstay of the raving calendar in that country. They will be launching a new concept under the name of Become One on March 14, next month in Jakarta and TBJ caught up with Henry to find out what that show is all about.

TB: How long has your group been involved in holding electronic music parties in Holland and how many people are involved in putting those shows on normally? Well, you can say that IDM-Events is an extension of MBFH in The Netherlands and we already have more than 15 years of experience in this field. We knew all the top DJs since when they were still starting out, so we have a personal bond with them. We have a full time team of around 20 people here and in Holland, and work together on Dreamfields with Matrixx and each person has their specific role. To produce these mega shows, we need hundreds of people working together in synergy so that a smooth, extraordinary and successful event can be achieved. TB: What can we expect from this first event in Jakarta? Hahaha. I am glad you asked this. All I can say is for the guests to be ready to experience a mind blowing EDM party that Indonesia has never seen before. The concept of Become One
is to have one big show, where the audience, DJs and show elements merge. For instance we have one stage, and the light show will be all around the audience. And the show will also interact with everyone in the audience in an innovative way. TB: Where is it to be held and any particular reason why there? Become One is going to be held in the brand new ICE Center BSD. The venue is not only the biggest convention center in Southeast Asia, it has been built with quality, safety and convenience in mind so it’s perfect for our guests. Top companies are involved in its’ production like Sinarmas Land, KOMPAS group and the Deutsche Messe, so this gives us the confidence that we can truly deliver a great event here. TB: I see you have a few big DJ acts on the way. Who are they and why are they so good? We will mix new emerging DJs with big names and also great local talents. There will be Avicii who has many massive radio hits and is one of the most popular DJs now. Dash Berlin who is a strong EDM DJ with a trance background, Sander van Doorn who is not only a great DJ but also producer, Firebeatz which is a must watch new talent, and we are also excited to bring a new concept of Indyana and Yasmin, before they start their worldwide Volcano tour as a duo. Plus we gonna release a mind-blowing Anthem by a new talent just before the event TB: Dreamfields was a huge success in Bali last year. Did that take you by surprise? Well yeah... although before we organized it, we did extensive research and knew that the Indonesian market was ready and would be excited about it; so we knew it was going to be successful. But it did surprise us how massive it was (There were more Dreamfields guests than what we expected) and people are still talking about it even until now. So it is really a great start for IDM-events as an organizer. And it is also a benefit for EDM lovers in Indonesia that we are here to make sure they experience a new level of EDM parties.

TB: There were many Balinese elements in the presentation of that Bali show. Can we expect similar influences at the Jakarta party? No. Dreamfields and Become One are very different concepts. Become One will be more interactive, with massive lights, effects and gimmicks because we do it in a metropolitan city so we are going to set the mood as it is. TB: Dreamfields is the name of the show in Holland and Bali, why has it changed to Become One for Jakarta? Dreamfields fits the Bali athmosphere, and Dreamfields will stay in Bali. For Metropolitan Asian cities we were looking to launch a new concept, which can exist next to Dreamfields. Become One sets itself apart through a different kind of show, with more activations and interactions between artists, entertainers and the public and it’s way of technology and decoration. TB: How many people are you expecting to turn up at this year’s Become One? We are aiming for 15,000 people at this event, but based on our experience with Dreamfields, we won’t be surprised it is reached 20.000 people. In which case we can use a bigger part of the ICE Center without compromising comfort or experience levels, which makes it a perfect venue. TB: There have been many rave parties in Jakarta over the years, what is going to stand out and make this party different to them? We are bringing a new concept for an EDM party, with more interaction. Become One is the first EDM party to be held in BSD city which is the home to many young souls. And next to the party we focus a lot on comfort, safety, easy of access and will make it an enjoyable and safe experience. We will try to raise the bar for EDM parties. All I can say is that people need to come, experience a blend of solid concept, high energy music and get ready to be entertained. www.beatmag.com

eet Funkagenda. Hailing from the UK, Funkagenda has been leading in the electronic music scene for a long time now and has flown into the Big Durian a couple times in his career. It is always a treat to hear his funky rolling techie house grooves and we’re more than happy to present you a Q & A with the funk meister. Hey man, how are you doing and what brings you into town this time? Well I have a number of shows here (Jakarta, Bali and Manilla). Honestly though whenever I get the opportunity to come to Asia, I jump at the chance. I love all the different cultures and

FEATURE the architecture throughout the different cities and countries. When did you start DJing and what or who were your early passions and influences? I started DJing in my 20s but I started producing when I was about 13/14. The first dance artists I was influenced by were Guy Called Gerald, Orbital, Carl Craig, Deep Dish, Aphex Twin, Autechre... To be honest, the list is pretty long and I can’t remember them all right now! What was the club scene like when you were coming through and what effect did it have on you and your musical taste? It was very techno-centric. I would see people like Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills, Surgeon on a weekly basis. It made my tastes lean heavily towards technology based music. I think that is where my love of gear and my interest in the roots of production came from. Recently you’ve produced everything from techno to progressive, what genre is your favorite to produce? I don’t have a favorite. I produce whatever takes my fancy on any given day to be honest. Sometimes I start with chords and it will be a melodic dance/EDM track. Sometimes I start with a patch and it ends up more techno based. Do you enjoy playing for a festival audience or a club audience more? They both have their own challenges and attractions. You can’t really beat a really switched on club crowd though. The vibe you get from knowing that you hold that room in the palm of your hand is indescribable.
There is so little good music out there. Don’t get me wrong, there are stunning producers. But so few artists know how to cover ground in their tracks. I like a track with a good solid groove and a good uplifting break. Most tracks these days have one or the other. What’s your stance on downloading music from file sharing websites like Zippyshare and Mediafire? I still think it’s theft. Always have. People will happily go into Starbucks and pay $4.50 for a cup of mass ground, budget coffee but they won’t pay 99 cents for a piece of music that was lovingly crafted by somebody with dreams and a vision. A song that may or may not become the soundtrack to a part of that person’s life... You tell me, how is that fair? People refuse to pay for anything they don’t have to nowadays, but they don’t realize that their lack of support for the industry is one of the main reasons why there is so much shite music around these days. What’s one food you can’t live without on the road? Hotel spaghetti bolognese. It’s one of the few dishes that you can pretty much always guarantee will be good anywhere in the world. I feel like hotels have a secret recipe.... What’s your favorite place to play in and why is it so memorable? I love playing in Japan. Everything about the place fascinates me and I always take away fantastic memories... Thanks for your time mate, with what song would you close this interview with? Band of Horses - “The Funeral”.

Putting Beethoven, Rachmaninov and Ananda Sukarlan On Stage! By Erza S.T.
T
he New Year’s celebration was just a month ago, yet the Jakarta classical music scene is ready to pull out the big sounds. Three big names representing three important periods of music were chosen to be on this month’s highlights. Beethoven from his classical era with his most renowned Symphony No. 5, Rachmaninoff from the 20th century classical music with his most elaborate Piano Concerto No. 3, and Ananda Sukarlan representing 21st century classical music with his ever popular Rapsodia Nusantara series are going to be on Jakarta’s classical music stage this month. Aula Simfonia Jakarta has finally given us a surprise with their upcoming February concert program by featuring the most famous work of Rachmaninoff: Piano Concert no. 3 in D Minor. Composed in 1909, this piece has the reputation of being one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical repertoire. My first introduction to this piece was through an Oscar-winning film Shine about an Australian concert pianist name David Helfgott who was obsessed with this piece of music. For this concert, right on Valentine’s Day, a relatively young and talented pianist Kevin Suherman from Bandung was chosen to perform this enigmatic piece together with the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra under the lead of Dr. Stephen Tong. Suherman began to perform in public since he was nine years old, and studies at Melbourne Grammar School in Australia since 2008 with a full music and school scholarship.

CLASSICAL Not only that he has been performing around the world, but Kevin is also an artist in Schimmel Piano that has produced solo piano recordings of Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven and Spanish music. He is currently continuing piano studies under the supervision of Professor Max Cooke. It is interesting to see Aula Simfonia Jakarta pairing this Rachmaninoff piece with Beethoven’s renowned Symphony No. 5 as it is almost like putting two titans in one room. If there is any classical music tune that is popular in the world, it is definitely this symphony! When we hear Symphony No. 5 by Beethoven, our mind will automatically played the first 8 notes in our head: ta-ta-ta-taaaa… Since it’s first premiered at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien in 1808, this symphony immediately achieved its prodigious reputation and was soon recognized as one of the most important works of the time.
Rapsodia Nusantara series to other short works, both by him and other composers. As usual, the concert will be performed in a relaxing manner where he will share stories behind each piece. Just pray super hard that he will perform the Rapsodia Nusantara no. 10 featuring folk songs from Bali. This piece is known to be the most difficult one of all others in the existing Rapsodia series.
These two magmatic pieces would definitely be entertaining to watch if you were thinking to plan a different romantic Valentine’s Day. But before you go to watch this concert, there is another upcoming concert that will be performed earlier and it’s free! Our beloved maestro Ananda Sukarlan who we lately have seen more in front of an orchestra than a piano has suddenly decided to do this free concert featuring himself behind the piano. After the dramatic work of Opera Clara and following with the recent Jakarta New Year Concert 2015, I was actually surprised that Ananda still has energy to do this concert, and for free too! On this rare occasion, the maestro will perform highlights of his compositions including the

Ben Howard
Like all the best albums written by those sensitive singer-songwriter types, Ben Howard’s 2011 debut Every Kingdom was a slow-burning affair that ended up selling over a million copies, thanks largely to a couple of wellplaced singles and Howard’s wholesome surfie cool factor. For a follow up, the smart money would have been on more of the same, but the quiet release of four-track Burgh Island EP in late 2012 suggested a vastly different musical direction might be on the horizon for the Kernow local in the lead up to I Forget Where We Were. Gone is the lap-cradled acoustic/ percussive guitar sound, and in its place dreamy electric soundscapes that recall early Verve – all spooky ambience and reverb echoing around in a hollow chamber. The

result is darker, richer and stranger experience that lacks the definition of his debut, evoking instead something much more atmospheric and indistinct – particularly during the opening few tracks like “Small Things” and “Rivers in Your Mouth”, but most of all on the muted, rhythmic “Time is Dancing”, which sounds like it’s being played at the bottom of the ocean.
off for “In Dreams”, there is still the same ominous edge, mainly down to the increased intensity of Howard’s voice, which continues to sound older and more wizened than his young years.
There’s no doubt that the sombre mood and lengthy tracks (the majority of which clock in in excess of six minutes) of I Forget Where We Were will at best exasperate, and at worst put off, a fair chunk of Howard’s current fan base – particularly those who enjoyed clapping along at the boutique summer festivals to songs like “Only Love” and “Wolves”. Even when the amps are momentarily switched

Not everyone is going to like this – these are not the sort of songs that will get radio play and I imagine sing-alongs at live gigs will only happen when he breaks out the old material, but that said, the move away from crowd-friendly surfpop to melancholy electronic instrumentation is a bold one, and for that Howard should be applauded as it would have been all-too-easy to churn out another Every Kingdom. They put together elements of cultural exoticism and energy into a new musical experience and they believe the projects are a gateway to a new level of interpretation and appreciation of both French and Indonesian cultures. They have created shows since 2009 with acts like TOMPI, KYN, Piyu, CKLM, Poetri, and French guitarist Louis Bertignac, who will also be back again this year, to name a few. This edition of Paris Jakarta Express presented by The Beat Room will feature another one of

With a combination of electronic, pop, rock-n-roll, dance and funk sounds PopOut, who are also releasing an album before summer and a single in February, should be rocking out the mixed French, Indonesian and ‘rest of world’ crowd expected at Fez Dungeon for this special event. Mikes, who have been the leading exponents of 90s indie cover music in Jakarta and single handedly created the genre in this city, will be supporting PopOut. utstanding, delectable dishes at any time of the day! Welcome to what probably is the hottest restaurant in the Kelapa Gading area! Portable started catering to the hungry foodies in September 2014. And the decision to open a 24hour eatery was certainly embraced with glee. The reasonably priced fare are also making Portable a popular place for nearby residents and beyond. The restaurant is very spacious, yet very welcoming. There are several dining areas with different atmospheres to choose from, plus you can also dine in one of the private rooms. And the sizeable bar and open kitchen provide a lively ambiance. Leading in the kitchen is Chef Chandra Yudasswara. We’ve covered some of his outlets in the past and never once we were

disappointed. The hard working chef is truly on top of his game. At Portable, he offers Asian and Western dishes in the extensive menu with equal ease. The Dim Sum selections (25k-40k) are favorites here, as are the noodles (75k-80k). But we just had to tell you about a couple of seafood dishes that we really enjoyed. The SautĂŠed Prawn with Salted Egg Yolk (85k) was a delight; the salted egg covering the prawns took them to another level. And do try the flavorful Seared XO Sea Scallops (105k). The succulent scallops were put on a bed of asparagus and leeks, and covered with a flavorsome special sauce made with mushroom and garlic, among others. Yummy!

The Western side of the menu is just as mouthwatering. The Portable Grill selections are perfect for your carnivorous cravings, from seafood dishes like 300g King Prawns (145k), and 180g Tasmanian Salmon (155k), to steaks like 250g Black Angus Rib Eye (220k), 300g Lamb Chop (255k), all the way to the ultimate 200g Wagyu Beef Tenderloin, Grade 9 (530k)! The pizzas and pastas are also winners. Our pick for the night, though, were the Nicoise Salad With Warm Tuna, Black Olives, Dieng Potatoes, and Anchovies (75k); a perfect starter for your meal, and the Veal Osso Bucco with Mascarpone Potatoes, Sautéed Asparagus, Zucchini, And Tomato Confit (235k), which we finished in no time. The mascarpone cheese-infused mashed potato was super smooth and luscious, but the veal was just juicy. So scrumptious! The desserts here are also exceptional. Specially created by dessert master Chef Eric Gouteyron, they are really hard to resist. There are quite a number of Cheese Cakes (35k-55k) to choose from, but for some sweet endings, treat yourself with the Nutella Chocolat Parfait (45k), Vanilla Cheese Cake (55k), or Chocolate Trinitario (60k). Oh go on, indulge! Diet starts tomorrow.
Don’t forget the signature mocktails and cocktails as well. Or enjoy a glass or two from Portable’s extensive wine collection. For a great eatery that’s available around-theclock, Portable is a crowd pleaser of the highest order. Congrats to Chef Chandra and his team for yet another fine addition to Jakarta’s dining options! hang Palace is the place to savor a supreme Cantonese culinary experience in town. Expect nothing but the best from this much-loved establishment. The premium and sometimes unconventional ingredients used to create the first-rate dishes here are one of the things that make dining at the restaurant exceptional. A couple of lion statues greeted us as we entered the restaurant. Pretty soon, we were astounded by the dramatic and majestic décor. Naturally, the auspicious colors of red and gold dominated the swanky interior. The main dining area is already spacious, but there are also some private dining rooms ready to host your gatherings, from a business meeting to a cheerful celebration and everything in between. The hearty soups are some of the highlights here, and there’s something for just about everyone. The Sichuan Hot and Sour Soup with Crab Meat is a firm favorite, along with the Fish Maw soups. But we opted for the more exotic ones, like Double-Boiled Black Mushroom Soup With Turtle Meat, and Double-Boiled Ginseng Soup With Abalone and Black Chicken! We absolutely loved, the Minced Beef Soup with Spinach also.
With the Lunar New Year just around the corner (Feb 19), Shang Palace will have a range of traditional New Year feasts, such as Poon Choi, Nian Gao, and certainly, Yu Sheng. And on the eve of Chinese New Year, you can savor special set menus which include Monk Jumps Over the Wall, Braised Bird’s Nest with Sea Cucumber, and Crispy Fried Nian Gao with Taro and Pumpkin. As the Cantonese would say; “Kung Hei Fat Choy!”. There’s the new Friday Express Buffet Lunch worth checking out also. It’s a great deal for 150k! For a chic yet relaxed Chinese dining indulgence, look no further than Shang Palace. With excellent Cantonese cuisine and attentive, well-trained staff, you’ll be royally pleased! Highly recommended. Another must-try dish is the Shang Palace Peking Duck; a two-in-one way to enjoy the perfectly roasted duck. First, take the crispy skin and put it in a paper-thin Chinese pancake and dip it in the hoisin sauce. Then you can enjoy the meat in a few ways; whether wrapped in lettuce, wok-fried with ginger and onion (our pick), with black pepper sauce, with bitter gourd and black bean, or with preserved vegetables and bean curd soup. You can substitute the duck for the Crispy Roasted Suckling Pig, if you feel like it. A couple more appealing dishes made it to our table, like the Prawn Mayonnaise with Corn Flakes, where the juxtaposition of textures dance in your mouth; the sweet, soft, succulent prawns and the crispy corn flakes blended tastefully. There’s also Lohan Vegetable in Money Bag; the ‘money bag’ is actually made from tofu and filled with veggies. Simple, yet complex at the same time. The Chilled Lemon Grass Jelly with Lime Sorbet, and the Chilled Mango Sago Cream desserts provided a perfect coda to our unforgettable dining experience. www.beatmag.com

Take a tasty trip to Turkey!

urkuaz is an authentic Turkish restaurant and is the brainchild of Proprietor/Head Chef Sezai Zorlu. You can say that he introduced Turkish cuisine to us Jakartans even before opening this eatery in July 2011. Here you can expect home cooking, where everything is made fresh, according to time-honored original recipes. The chef first learned to cook from helping his mother and grandmother as a young boy back home in Turkey, and you can really feel the passion and love expressed in the magnificent dishes at Turkuaz. Turkuaz (meaning ‘turquoise’) was named after the oceanic blue of the Mediterranean. The color is dominant inside the restaurant. But there are more than just that; every nook and cranny boasts different striking touches and embellishments unique to Turkey. We visited the restaurant for the first time recently, and were greeted by Yanti, the chef’s gregarious wife and co-proprietor of Turkuaz. Over some invigorating Naneli Cay or mint tea, she suggested that we begin with the mouth-watering Mezze Platter. It’s a shareable starter consisting of Zeytinyagli Humus (pureed chickpeas and tahini with extra virgin olive oil), Babaganuc (char-grilled aubergines, tomatoes, chili peppers, garlic), Gavurdagi Salatasi (tomatoes, cucumber, walnuts, with pomegranate sauce, and extra virgin olive oil), and Ispanakli Peynirli Borek (wood oven-baked spinach and Turkish white cheese in homemade filo), and accompanied with scrumptious, freshly-baked breads called Lavas Ekmegi
(puffy bread) and Ozel Kunzulu Ekmek (sesame bread). What a perfect intro to our culinary journey! Next up, the Bademli Balik; a tasty pan-grilled filet of marinated dover sole fish, covered with a colorful paprika trio, plus roasted sliced almond. But the pièce de résistance here has gotta be the Signature Lamb Shank! The meat is delightfully enriched with herbs and spices, and baked overnight in a wood oven until tender enough to cut with a tug of the fork. There are several ways to enjoy the dish, but Yanti suggested the tasty and slightly spicy Ezme Soslu Kuzu Incik or sautéed vegetables in homemade chili paste and spices. And was she right on the money! It’s a must-try! The Sehriyeli Pilav, slowcooked rice with sautéed vermicelli, is an ideal accompaniment to the dishes. Just recently, Turkuaz expanded it wings by opening a Baklava House on the premises and brought in the youngest Baklava Master, Tufan Goztepe, as the enthusiastic creator of the sweet delicacies. All Baklavas here are made from scratch using the finest ingredients where the filo pastry as main the ingredient are handmade as thin as 1.5 mm (50% thinner than machine made!), creating more crunchiness. With quite a number of alluring Baklava selections to choose from they are more than enough to satisfy your sweet cravings! Round off your meal than with a cup of the celestial Turkish Coffee, or complete your experience with a sweet-smelling smoke of Shisha. For a taste of Turkish indulgence, Turkuaz is simply sublime.
