Fellow members,

First, let me take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Rachelle Holder to the Barbados Yacht Club. Rachelle joined us earlier this month as our Administrative Assistant, replacing our beloved former Administrative Assistant Ms. Lana Blackman who resigned in August.

As we approach the Winter Season, we expect to have our usual Temporary Members and returning members, our snowbirds, with us yet again. We will put the systems in place to be able to manage the additional throughput so that the level of service to all members and their guests is nothing less than stellar.

As you might have already seen, we have started the process for the recruitment of a General Manager. The ads have been circulated on our Notice Boards and across various media platforms and, hopefully by the time this Bellbuoy is published, the process of shortlisting should have commenced. Your HR & Member Services Sub-committee and the Committee have both done a tremendous job of setting standards, performance objectives and the expectations of the role. We hope to have a General Manager appointed as early as possible in the winter season.

Following on from the recruitment of the General Manager will be a Food & Beverage Manager. This recruitment process is expected to closely follow what was done for the General Manager’s position. Stay tuned for additional information as this progresses.

Finally, I would like to speak about respect. Respect between members, staff to members and members to staff.

We are all human beings, regardless of our background, social standing, achievements or aspirations. If we always treat each other with respect, we will have an enjoyable experience as we journey through this thing we call life.

Let us all be respectful of each other, regardless of our opinions and biases, so that the moments spent together at our Club can be that much more enjoyable.

BYC Tennis Members and Friends recently celebrated 100 years of tennis as part of the Clubs’ Centenary Celebrations. On Friday 27th September, there were several funfilled activities on courts 3 & 4 including tennis coaching from one of Barbados’ Davis Cup Players, Xavier Lawrence. Young and old, seasoned pros and beginners’ also all tried their hand against the tireless ball machine which was a great hit! There was also a trip down memory lane as members were treated to a photo display of players, past and present.

One of the highlights of the celebrations was an Exhibition match featuring BYC’s top players Noah Haynes and Joshua Worme who took on former and current Davis Cup players Russell Moseley and Xavier Lawrence in what was a highly entertaining match-up. Russell and Xavier emerged victorious 6-3, 6-1 following an exciting match with several lengthy deuce-games which were played to a large crowd of supporters in a festive and enjoyable atmosphere.

The celebrations continued following the Exhibition Match with our long-standing tennis members Hazel Lashley and Margot Thomson partnering with the younger generation Zach Lashley and Callan McGougan respectively to finish off the tennis playing for the evening, although the camaraderie continued for several more hours with food and drink and great conversation shared among all.

I would like to thank the sub-committee , BYC staff and all members who assisted in making this a memorable event.

Here’s to the next 100 Years of Tennis at the BYC!!

The pickleball court recently got a fantastic facelift thanks to Kenrick and Orville who have done a wonderful job of preparing and painting the ‘new look’ court under the canopy.

Thanks also go to David Tindale for his generous donation of the paint and for his guidance in the court’s painting. A new net has been ordered, so we are entering a new era for the sport of pickleball at the Club.

Members and guests of members where out in their numbers, both having a grand time.

The Be Their Voice fundraising Quiz Night was hosted on September 7th this event was a great mix and mingle with an excellent attendance, hosted by our quizmaster Terry Bent. This event was another well-accomplished event, supporting Barbados Dogs & Cats, Community Aid & Education and Spay & Neuter.
