MESSAGE FROM YOUR COMMODORE

Fellow members,

In this month’s column, I am dealing primarily with issues raised by you, our members. The solutions to some of these issues rests with us, the members. The other solutions are being dealt with by the management of the Club.

There is a practice by some members to gather several chairs and tables for their own comfort This reduces the availability of chairs and tables for other members In some cases, other members may only want to have access to these items for a short duration during the course of their stay at the Club

We do acknowledge that more chairs and tables are required and we are presently in the latter stages of the procurement process We expect to have them at the Club within the coming weeks, so that they are available to all during our busy “winter” season.

That being said, it will only be successful if we all share the facilities available and be mindful of each other’s needs.

We are also aware that there appears to be a shortage of cocktail glasses.

We are also in the final stages of the procurement process for these and other items but, again, we need your assistance. These glasses go missing regularly.

I know that we may inadvertently get that “last drink” and either travel with it, or leave the glasses on the property somewhere out of the sight of the staff This does not help our cause We spend quite a larger-than-expected sum on procurement of utensils. That affects all of us.

So please, if you have any glasses that were inadvertently taken from the Club, or, left in yachts or boats after having an enjoyable day, please return them so that we can have these utensils returned to our stock This would assist in improving the level of stock of these items.

Your Committee is very aware of the aged look of the beach facility Your House and Grounds Subcommittee is presently organising a facelift for this facility but we may need to do more in the form of capital works to bring the facility “back to life” We are budgeting for this work but again, if we have expenses in areas not expected, for example, those areas previously mentioned, that reduces the available capital for major works.

I would also like to remind you, our members, that you are not allowed to bring drinks into the Club. We expect that you would be mindful of this and patronise the bar should you require beverage during your stay at the Club.

I am therefore imploring you to work with us, your Committee on these matters Remember that it is our Club and we need your support to ensure the comfort, safety and enjoyment of all members and our guests.

I will also take this opportunity to remind you that nominations for persons to fill the positions of Flag Officers and Committee members close on December 20th 2025 You can get the necessary information from the Office if you do not know the procedure.

Finally, I want to update you on the security upgrades that I have been discussing over the last few months.

We are awaiting the arrival of the security arms for the entrance and exit. We have also had discussions with software providers to procure the necessary software to allow for:

1. The management of Member data.

2. The consolidation of the point of sale transactions, and

3 Improved security controls and data management.

The software programs reviewed thus far have various elements of our requirements that are strong but other areas that are weak. We have not finalised the software package that we would like to procure as yet. We will continue to discuss with the service providers and seek to make a decision in the coming weeks. It is better to take some time to find the best system than to rush and settle for a package that cannot meet our needs

I look forward to your cooperation and support as we navigate our way through the upcoming busy winter season

All that is left for me to say is “Anchor Up!”

Team Report: BYC vs Tranquillity Lawn Tennis Club

October 16–20, 2025

Contributed by: Natalie Small

From October 16th to 20th, a team of 14 BYC members travelled to Port-of-Spain to continue the longstanding and friendly rivalry between our two clubs. Over the course of Friday and Saturday, matches were contested in men’s doubles, ladies’ doubles, and mixed doubles events. The competition was both spirited and good-natured, with the hosts emerging victorious in competitive match play by a score of 7–6.

Saturday also featured several mix-in games, which provided additional opportunities for friendly competition and camaraderie among members of both clubs.

Tranquillity once again proved to be a gracious host, offering exceptional hospitality throughout the weekend. Members enjoyed delicious Chinese and Indian meals at the Club, followed by a memorable Sunday lime and lunch in Blanchisseuse, after a stop in Maracas Bay for shark and bake, to conclude a wonderful visit.

We extend our sincere thanks to Tranquillity for their warm welcome and outstanding organization. The weekend embodied the true spirit of friendly competition and sportsmanship that continues to strengthen the bond between our two clubs. We look forward to returning the hospitality when we host the next leg of this cherished fixture.

The BYC team was Jason Small, Brian Cadogan, Jimmy Tasker, Nigel Worme, Kevin Lewis, Peter Symmonds, Stephen Walcott, Matthew Walcott, John Beale, Noah Haynes, Marie Jeanne Symmonds, Sue Rogers, Helen Roper and Natalie Small.
