BELLBUOY

ON THE COVER

The Centennial Committee is busy finalizing a book to commemorate our 100th anniversary. If anyone has historic images of the Club, including our members and staff, we will be keenly interested to see them. Please submit images to www.office@barbadosyachtclub.com as soon as possible together with information about the image, for example, who is in the photo, the occasion and when it was taken.
August is traditionally one of the quietest months at the Club and so it has been this year. However, September has seen members coming out in greater numbers, many taking advantage of the good (if very hot) weather and the perfect sea conditions for sea bathing and taking their boats out for a day on the water.
We had no sailing events in the month although a few members went out in their boats to compete in a 4-leg, night-time sea fishing tournament. The first two legs were won comfortably by a team on “Tabio” owned by Michael Atwell. When the tournament is over, we will report on final results.
The schedule for Barbados Sailing Week and the Mount Gay Round Island Race has now been finalized. Details can be found on www.roundbarbados.com.
We are in the process of updating the content of our website. We would like also to improve the look and feel of the site. To assist us in this we would like members to submit photos and/or videos taken at the Club which can be included and also used for promotional purposes. Images could be of sailing, kayaking or water sports, members dancing, eating and drinking at the bar or simply socializing on the beach. In fact, anything that shows members enjoying the facilities of the Club, its various activities and entertainments.
Next month, I will be sharing information about the dates of our Christmas events and also some of the events and activities planned for our Centennial celebrations.
Our Last Friday of the Month Party with Alan Sheppard (delayed to the 1st September because of poor weather) was very well attended and a great success. There will be no Last Friday party in September although it will be Art Taylor’s 85th birthday celebration to which all members are invited.
We are hosting the Fiesta Latina on Saturday, 30th September. Tickets are still available from the office and other outlets. The cost is $40 for members, $50 for non-members. Members can charge the tickets to their account but please note these are non-refundable.
I am saddened to report the passing of two members recently; Maureen Mackenzie and Barbara Lewis. Both had been members for many years. We send our sincere condolences to the families and friends of these members.
This is the last week to have your say on the quality and types of entertainment we have at the Club through the ENTERTAINMENT SURVEY. If you haven’t filled out the online Entertainment Survey which was emailed on August 29th please do so.
I hope I can encourage even more of you to do the survey so it is truly representative of all of the club’s members, especially those who do not use the club very often so we can learn what more we can do to encourage you to visit the club. Everyone’s feedback is important to us and will help us in the direction and planning of future events. It will take you just about 15 minutes to complete and the deadline for submission is Friday 22nd September. You can expect my feedback from the survey when I return from holiday at the end of October.
Several members indicated in the survey that they would be willing to VOLUNTEER AT THE CLUB to lead or help with social activities.
This is fantastic and all are welcome. Let us know what activities interest you and your general skills and we will try to get you on board immediately. Just drop me an e-mail at kml@caribsurf.com or via WhatsApp 256-2216. We are planning a Bingo night in November and I am looking for a capable and fun MC and board checkers.
Next weekend FIESTA LATINA is celebrating their 27th year with a dance on Saturday 30th in the Club House. If you are a lover of Latin music you won’t want to miss this so come out and show us that those hips don’t lie.
If you never tried Latin dancing, don’t be shy, there will be instructors on hand to give you a little encouragement to get you quickly moving on the dance floor. Tickets are available from the office and members enjoy special pricing for this event.
In mid-October Stephen Walcott will be presenting a NEIL DIAMOND VIDEO TRIBUTE on Friday 13th on the beach.
If you were fortunate to attend the ABBA video tribute he presented last year, you will know that it promises to be a great evening of music and dancing. We are grateful to Stephen for this effort which is a free gift to the members of the club.
Finally, the sea temperature is at its warmest in September/October, so do make a point to come down to the club for a dip a couple times in the upcoming weeks.
If you wish to contact me directly with any suggestions, you can do so at kml@caribsurf.com
Happy and Safe September!

June 1st marked the beginning of the 2023 hurricane season and we wish to remind boat owners that boat your boat trailers should be in good working condition during this time.
Particular attention should be paid to Phase 3 of the Hurricane Contingency Plan which reads as follows:
Hauling out of boats will take place during this phase.
Owners must present themselves prior to or during this period and not during the WARNING PHASE
No staff or equipment will be available for hauling up of boats after this.
It is imperative that you check your vessel after rainfall to ensure it is free of stagnant water
The Ministry of Health has reminded us that the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is still present and since the Barbados Yacht Club, is located “down wind”, we are considered a very high risk area. We have asked the boatmen to be more vigilant in their checks but request your assistance in controlling this problem.
