From the Deck of the Vice Commodore
This is my first communication to you as ViceCommodore via this column so it is a pleasure to share information on what has gone on at the club over the past month and upcoming events, most of which are covered in the following pages.
Christopher Parravicino Vice Commodore The Barbados Yacht Club
As midsummer occurs in the Northern Hemisphere on 21st June this year, marking the official start of summer, we can already see and feel the change in weather. As with other cultures, ours will celebrate this period with festivities, with the start of the Season of Crop Over. Come out 15th July to join in the celebrations with a great line-up of artistes who will be performing for Soca Sunset. Member and Early Bird discounted tickets are on sale now. This event is open to all that pay the admission fee.
Our yachting and boating members will be enjoying some lovely sea days and the tennis and other sporting members will be acclimatizing to the warmer temperatures. Our social members will be enjoying a less crowded beach and facilities now that the members who winter here and temporary guests have returned to their respective countries.
All that being said, this is also the official start of the Hurricane Season in the Tropical Atlantic, so all are reminded to be prepared, especially the boat owners.
The Mother’s Day lunch was very well attended and positive comments were received from the attendees. Attendance at the Last Friday Night Party with MooTown performing was moderate to low and the band was well received. More and more corporate events are being held in the Club House and these are an additional source of revenue. All feedback received on the facilities, food, beverage and service have been very good.
The Last Friday Night Party will be held on 30th June with JJ & Chadd performing. This is open to members and their guests only and there is no cover charge. The first Members vs Staff pool competition will take place on 25th June so those that wish to take part and need to fit in some practice, now is the time to start!
Members are encouraged to attend the events that have been lined up. Please come out to meet old and new friends as well as support the club and its activities.
Finally, a reminder to any members that are planning a trip overseas, that the Barbados Yacht Club has reciprocal arrangements with several other clubs around the world. Some are in major cities and offer accommodation at very reasonable rates. Alternatively, you can just visit to enjoy the ‘club atmosphere’ for a drink or meal. All that you need is a letter of introduction. Please contact the office for more details.
Wishing all fathers a peaceful and relaxing Father’s Day and everyone an enjoyable and safe summer.

SPECIAL FEATURE
During his term he organized the construction of the new Boat Lockers and Staff Facility/Gym buildings, and the paving of the boatyard. He also provided engineering services for the Beach Bar, Restaurant and Change Rooms and the Club’s water storage tanks and distribution system.
Andrew P. Hutchinson
This month, we shine our spotlight on Andrew Hutchinson, our final feature in our four-part series highlighting the Club's Trustees.
Andrew joined the Yacht Club in 1986 when he acquired CIRRUS II, a 36ft sloop he effectively used to explore the East Caribbean over a period of 25 years. In his earlier years he graduated from Sunfish to Mirror Dinghies to GP14’s and the 22ft Golif Sloop “Plumette”. Andrew’s passion was cruising with limited success racing in the Cruising Class. He is the Honorary Foreign Port Representative for the Royal Cruising Club (UK), since 1991.
He served on Commodore Howard Palmer’s Committee (1996-99) and later with Commodore Francis Godson (2009-2011) before becoming Commodore (2012-2015).
Andrew has a BSc. in Civil Engineering (UWI 1971) and a post graduate diploma in Sanitary Engineering from the International Institute for Hydraulic & Environmental Engineering (Delft, Netherlands 1974). Over the past 50 years he provided consulting engineering services for several significant projects in Barbados and the East Caribbean. He received an award from the UWI’s Faculty of Engineering (1987) for his contribution to the Development of Barbados and the region; he also received a Gold Award (2000) from the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association for his contribution to the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Sectors. He was a director of Republic Bank (Barbados) Ltd from 2012 to 2022.
The Club is very special to Andrew as the facilities are superior to most other yacht clubs in the East Caribbean. As we celebrate the Club’s Centenary in 2024, he urges members to continue supporting the Club’s traditions and its financial stability, we cannot be complacent. Recently retired from his substantive engineering practice he is always happy to contribute to the Club’s continued planning and development.

Audrey Rosalind Thomas passed away peacefully at her home Glendale, Golf Club Road on Saturday May 27th, one week before celebrating her 101st birthday.
Audrey was a long-standing member of The Barbados Yacht Club, and, along with her younger siblings Esther and Eleanor, she spent many of her childhood days in Carlisle Bay with their father Arthur Skeete, a keen boat builder and sailor, who was an original member of the BYC in the early 1900’s.
Audrey developed a talent for flower arranging, with a love and skill for horticulture in general, and was often involved in the floral decor that set the stage for many special events.
Apart from family duties as wife to Colin, and mother of 4, she devoted much of her time and energy to horticulture in Barbados. She served as President of the BHS for a number of years, accompanying the local team to the annual Chelsea Flower Show, where they achieved numerous gold medals with outstanding displays at this prestigious exhibition. She was also awarded a Barbados Centennial Honor (BCH) in the year 2000 for her service in the field of horticulture.
Despite her physical weakening in recent years, and the immense grief she suffered at the sudden death of her beloved daughter Sue in 2018, Audrey remained feisty until her death, and was simply a force to be reconned with!
The Committee, Members, Management and Staff extend sincerest condolences to her sons Stephen, Robert and Charles, and their respective families.
