As you will all have noticed, we are having a very busy winter season. Now that we have come to accept COVID as a way of life, more and more people are willing to travel and come out to the beach. This is good news for the Club but does present some challenges We have purchased more sun loungers but these tend to be in full use all day long. Our rules about members’ guests are noted on the back page of this Bellbuoy. Please take a moment to read this page.
The annual sailing week was held in January and a summary of the events is featured in this edition of the Bellbuoy In the “Round The Island” race, the first to finish was the Australian-crewed trimaran, “Ocean Tribute”, which was also awarded the Line Honours prize. Other winners in the various classes are highlighted on pages 6 and 7. The water sports events were particularly well supported and Kevin Talma did a great job organizing these events Congratulations to all the winners and participants.
We had some new entertainment offerings in January and into February and we hope to be able to do more and different things in the future. We are organizing some focus groups to discuss ideas and opinions on entertainment events and food and beverage offerings. We will have a better idea of what members would like once these have been completed.
We have a number of events planned for February which we hope will appeal to as many members as possible. The next event will be a High Tea on Saturday, 18th February and the Last Friday party entertainment will be the Bay St Jazz Ensemble.
We have welcomed a number of members from overseas sailing Clubs in January and into February. On presentation of their membership card, members from sailing clubs with which we have reciprocal arrangements are entitled to a two-week free visitor pass to our Club. A list of Clubs we have reciprocal arrangements with is on our web site under the tab “Reciprocal Membership”. If you plan to visit one of these Clubs, please make sure you have your BYC membership card with you. It might also be a good idea to notify them in advance of your proposed visit
Sailors who arrive at the Club having sailed here, but who are not part of a reciprocal arrangement, are offered a one-week visitor pass subject to proof they have cleared
In closing, I regret to announce the passing of two members in January, Andy Voss and Jonathon Gittens. We send condolences to their family and friends.
Dr. Isobella Parkinson Commodore - The Barbados Yacht ClubMeet Jonathan Still, newly elected member to serve on the Management Committee and Chair of the Boating Committee.
Jonathan has been a member of the Barbados Yacht Club for what feels like a lifetime. He developed a strong love and passion for sailing from a "young lad" when he had his first of many experiences sailing small vessels such as Mirror Dinghies and Fireballs before moving up to sailing on Yachts
Jonathan was fortunate be a part of many Regattas held by The Barbados Yacht Club and though not as active as he was during the last twenty-five years, sailing will always be his passion.
We take this opportunity to welcome Jonathan to the Committee.
Encourage your friends to join the Club by offering them a One Month Visitor Pass.

Member Greg Albrecht took our dinghy “Lascia Dire” out for a sail in the Bay last month.
The boat was built in 1962 to an early 20th century design by British designer, Ian Cockshot It is a 12-foot gaff rig dinghy made largely of mahogany
A few minor repairs have recently been necessary but it is now sea-worthy again for sailors wishing to take her out.
Barbados Sailing Week 2023, held in mid-January, saw several exciting days of offshore, dinghy and radio controlled boat racing, together with kiteboarding and wing foiling competitions, taking place in the waters around the island.
The Week kicked off with the Youth Dinghy Series on Saturday, 14th and Sunday, 15th January in Carlisle Bay. This year nineteen of our most talented junior sailors competed in a total of ten races over the two day period. Over the same weekend some of our more experienced sailors were doing battle in the Radio Controlled Dragon Flite 95 Series at Golden Grove Pond in St Philip.
These events were followed by the Coastal Racing Series which sailed over three days along the South and West Coasts of the island Winds varying between 15 and 25 knots and relatively flat seas made for excellent sailing conditions and, with all boats sailing in the CSA Racing Class, competition proved to be exciting
A-Salt Weapon, skippered by Jason Tindale, emerged overall winner, with Maison Satec
from Martinique placing second and Spirit of Juno from the UK coming third.
Once again this year, Errol Barrow Day on Saturday, 21st January, saw a good mix of local and visiting yachts crossing the starting line to compete in the Mount Gay Rum Round Barbados Race and try to beat the record in their respective classes
The CSA Monohull Class was won by Whistler, skippered by Peter Lewis, whilst Maison Satec placed second and Spirit of Juno took third spot Rapajam, skippered by David Staples, placed first in the Non-CSA Class, with The Blue Peter from the USA coming in second and Hultaj from Poland in third.

No records were broken again this year; however, Whistler missed out on beating her own record, set in 2018 in the CSA Monohull Class, by a mere 1 minute, 4 seconds on corrected time. The curtain came down on this year’s Sailing Week with the Presentation of Prizes for all the events at the Yacht Club on the evening of Sunday, 22nd January

Our Friday lunchtime talk on the 27th January was given by Martin and Debbie Pope, two British sailors who have twice sailed across the Atlantic to Barbados Their talk “A Story of Shipwreck and Rescue” provided an account of their first crossing when they were de-masted 200 miles out of Barbados and had to be rescued at night, in high seas, by a Chinese freighter. Their talk of this terrifying experience, accompanied by some photographs, enthralled the lunchtime audience.
